Uncertainty Over Benefit Of DART Extension?
The news that an expansion of the DART service to Balbriggan will take place by 2022 has been given a mixed welcome in the North County. Local government TDs, Dr James Reilly and Alan Farrell from Fine Gael and Brendan Ryan (Lab), all said the expansion of the DART service from Malahide to Balbriggan will greatly benefit residents in the North County. However, the plan has been given a frosty reception by opposition politicians in the area, who claim that the newly extended line as far as Balbriggan will yield no benefits, as there is no certainty that extra capacity will accrue. In a TV interview, Balbriggan Chamber of
Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) has raised concerns that plans to extend the DART to Balbriggan may result in a cut to commuter trains on the northern line with no plans to increase capacity on the northern commuter line
By Patrick Finnegan Commerce President, Luke Moriarty, while welcoming the news, was disappointed in the timeframe. “The date for completion is too far away by a mile. Seven years is too long to wait and we would like to see it delivered in five years,” he said.
He has warned that the DART cannot be seen as a replacement to the current train service that serves communities across North County Dublin. Continued on page 21

There was great excitement on Monday last, with the announcement of the 2015 Tidy Towns winners. The results ceremony was held at the Helix Theatre on Monday, 28th September last and
hopes were high amongst all contestants that the results would bring success for their towns and villages. The great news is that the North County has once again excelled itself, with exceptional perfor-
mances by Skerries, Lusk and Malahide. In fact, Skerries with 321 points, up five from last year, came just two points behind overall winners, Letterkenny. Continued on page 21

Great News As Swords Gets Purple Flag Swords is celebrating after learning it has achieved the prestigious Purple Flag status for its evening and night-time economy. Purple Flag is a town and city centre award - similar to the Blue Flag for beaches - which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 6pm and 5am. Towns awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant mix of entertainment, while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Purple Flag accredited towns have all reported a consistent increase in footfall and a decrease in crime within the evening and night-time economy. County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor welcomed the award by saying, “This is a great achievement for Swords and the benefits that this award can bring to Swords are significant”, he said. The Swords Purple Flag Working Group is delighted with the award and in particular has welcomed the assessment of Swords town as meeting the required standards under each of the headings that are used by the assessors.” Continued on page 21

The departures road at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 will be closed for a three-month period for essential maintenance starting this week. The upgrade work, which is weather dependent, is due to be completed by mid-December, and is part of a range of projects to modernise Terminal 1, which is more than 40 years old. Almost 375 million passengers have used Terminal 1 since it opened for operations in 1972. The significant increase in vehicles using the departures road over that time means that the road is now in urgent need of repair to prolong its life and to address some ongoing drainage issues. “Over the past 43 years the Terminal 1 departures road has been the main thoroughfare through the airport and it has endured much wear and tear during those four decades,” said Siobhán O’Donnell Dublin Airport’s Head of External Communications.
“The T1 departures road now needs a comprehensive upgrade and this can only be carried out safely by closing the road to all traffic,” she added. “The upgrade to the departures road will also enable Dublin Airport to improve the overall arrivals area within Terminal 1,” she continued. Over the next three months, Dublin Airport will provide an alternative set down area for customers departing from Terminal 1 at the rear of the T1 multi-storey car park. A dedicated traffic management system will be in operation with clear signage and traffic marshals in place to assist customers throughout the works. The project to upgrade the departures road will include structural repairs to walls and concrete columns, the upgrading and replacing of existing movement joints and the installation of a new drainage system and outlets. The existing footpaths, road surface and line markings will also be replaced.

Great Achievements For Balbriggan Students On 24th September, Youthreach Balbriggan held their certificate presentation to recognise students’ achievements in the Bracken Court Hotel. There was a great atmosphere at the event as past and present students accompanied by family and friends, fellow students and centre staff came together for the celebration. At the event, the students received certificates for courses they complete during the 2014/ 2015 academic year, including QQI courses, First Aid courses, a Drug Education programme with Foróige Youth Services and Job seeking skills workshops with FastTrack to Information Technology (FIT). Some students were also presented with the President’s Gaisce Bronze Award on the night. Youthreach comes under the auspices of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board who were represented at the ceremony by Education Officer, Fionnuala Anderson and Regional Youthreach Co-ordinator Ken Smartt. In her opening address she congratulated all the students receiving awards on their achievements. She was followed by a past student from Youthreach Balbriggan, Iuliu Rostas who spoke fondly about his own personal experience of attending Youthreach. Representatives from local community organisations - Gary Harding from Foróige Youth Services, Joe Troy, Chair of Balbriggan Tidy Towns and Kate Daly Ni Bhrionn, Balbriggan Community Gardaí - also spoke on the night about the various projects that they have been involved in with the students from the Centre. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of Balbriggan Youthreach’s first ever ‘Student of the Year Award’ which went to Eric O’Shea, a very popular and deserving former student. Some of the students receiving certificates on the night will continue to attend Youthreach Balbriggan for a second year.

Members of the Beaumont Hospital Staff Choir recently took part in the final of the Workplace Choir of the Year competition, which took place at the National Concert Hall. Now in its third year, the aim of the contest is to build positive relationships and to foster a sense of identity and pride within the working environment. Reaching the final is a huge achievement for the 32 singers, who work across a range of departments in Beaumont Hospital. The group is conducted by Stroke Care CoOrdinator, Emma Hickey and is accompanied by pianist Juanito Paraguya who is a senior staff nurse. Leonie Weekes, who works in Stroke Care at Beaumont Hospital, founded the Beaumont Choir in 2013 as part of fundraising efforts. Commenting on

A spokesperson for the club said, “As the club has grown, the pressure on these facilities has also grown. The need for an all-weather training facility has become apparent as teams are forced to rent locations outside the catchment area over the winter months, to train under lights and on reliable and safe ground.”

adapted for Tony, when the time comes for him to return home and the family needs a room built on for him. “It’s been a very tough time for our family and my father as well, as he was a very active man,” said Gillian. The family are calling on local representatives to ask the County Council for funding to carry out the necessary alterations to the family’s council home in Loughshinny, which would mean that Tony
can return to his home. Without the house being made wheelchair accessible and other necessary alterations, he cannot return to his home. “Nobody has come to look at the house yet and all we have been told is that our dad is on the waiting list. We need him home, so that we can look after him,” said Gillian. “The money raised from this fundraiser will go towards buying a specially adapted car,
which can be used to get him home for an hour or so, but he’s not at that stage yet,” she said. Tony (66) is very wellknown in the locality, where he was involved in the fishing industry, as well as building. “This is the first fundraiser for Tony and people around the village here in Loughshinny are getting involved in their own fundraisers, for which we are very grateful,” said Gillian.

End Of An Era The news that prominent football club, Swords Rovers FC no longer exists, will be greeted with sadness in the local area. The club, which was founded in 1993, has played a major part in the development of under age players in that time. Most of the players have been playing at the club since they were seven. They competed successfully in the
North Dublin Schoolboys League (NDSL) where the under 12s won their league. Club treasurer, Orla Burrowes spoke to the County Leader and expressed her sadness at the turn of events. “This year we were left with just two teams, the under 13s and under 18s. Our under 18s saw the year out, but our situation was hopeless. Charges of
€600 for pitches was too much for us, having risen from €130, just because we had a senior team,” she said. “The committee would like to the extend their best wishes and gratitude to under 19 boys, as many of them have been with the club from a young age. We travelled to Anfield with the team last weekend and a great time was had by all. The committee took over the club just over two years ago at a
minus figure, and through great work, managed to bring the club back, allowing us to bring the boys away. The club’s containers and equipment were donated to the local community and to a club in the area,” she said. “I would like to pay tribute to everyone who has helped us over the years, especially Alan Comerford and Derek Meates, who managed teams over the years,” said a dejected Orla.

Balbriggan’s Tony Waldron is the delighted rugby fan who will be at the pre-match coin-flip at Ireland v Italy on Sunday at Rugby World Cup 2015. Waldron was the big winner live on TV3’s ‘The Sin Bin’ recently, beating off numerous other competition winners to land the top prize. Speaking about his big win, Waldron, who plans to bring wife Joanna with him to London’s Olympic Stadium, remarked, “I’m hugely excited, my phone was hopping last night after I won! I had been thinking about heading to the Canada game but was sick at the time, so couldn’t go.” Waldron, originally from Canada but living in Balbriggan for the past 15 years, was picked for ‘The Sin Bin’ after purchasing Heineken in Tesco, Balbriggan, recently. The competition is part of the ‘It’s Your Call’ campaign, which gives Irish rugby fans the chance to be at the pre-match coin toss at an Ireland Rugby World Cup 2015 game.
Kelleher To Contest Dail Seat Anti-Austerity Alliance (AAA) have selected Balbriggan man, Terry Kelleher to contest the upcoming General Election, in an attempt to win a seat in Dublin Fingal. Kelleher, a former Balbriggan Town councillor is standing on a record of 25 years as a trade union representative, a community activist fighting developers, estate management fees, bin charges and water charges in the 1990s. The AAA has been synonymous with the boycott of the water charges nationally through its TDs Paul Murphy, Ruth Coppinger and Joe Higgins, and this will be a major part of Kelleher’s campaign. Kelleher said “The movement of people power around the water charges has changed the political landscape of this
country. We have said from day one that the boycott is our best weapon to defeat the charges. The water charges will be the major issue in this election,” he said. Meanwhile new party, Renua could not confirm if they were putting a candidate on the ticket in the new five seat Dublin Fingal constituency, which replaces the old Dublin North constituency. Party spokesperson, John Drennan told the County Leader that there were still selection conventions to be held and that “no decision had been made yet.” We tried to contact Independent TD, Shane Ross to ask if the Independents Alliance, of which he is one of the leaders, would be running a candidate in this constituency, but we failed to get a reply.

We need local stakeholders to come together and to decide which projects should be selected to apply for this funding.” “The Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA) report has shown that rural towns have felt the impact of the economic downturn

The types of projects to be funded under this initiative would primarily be a matter for the Local Authority in partnership with their communities to decide,” he added.

The 2016 Centenary Lecture Porgramme is a response to calls for discussion forums emanating from the public during consultation days earlier this year,” explained Yvonne O’Brien, Senior Executive Librarian with the County Council. “It will provide a forum for great discussion, engagement and debate with locals over the coming months.” County Mayor David O’Connor, also speaking at the event said, “Our local libraries are uniquely placed to host events that encourage engagement with the past, critical thinking and debate. Libraries are also valuable resources for researching the revolutionary era and the County Council are dedicated to providing first class local history primary resources through the Local Studies and Archives in Swords,” he said.
Henchy Eager For CCTV In Donabate Local councillor, Adrian Henchy (FF) has asked the Chief Executive, for an update on previous discussions regarding the possible roll out of CCTV for the Donabate Portrane area which, according to Henchy, has seen another Cllr. Adrian Henchy recent spike in crime. While the Council acknowledged the productive role CCTV can play in targeting crime in communities, they argued that the system requires constant monitoring, which isn’t feasible at the moment. “There is an acknowledgement by An Garda Síochána that CCTV can play a useful role in crime prevention and crime detection. Overall the Gardai are supportive of the proper and appropriate installation and use of CCTV,” they explained. “CCTV systems require an extensive financial commitment to install and monitor and in relation to the entire area of Donabate/Portrane, they would be considered a large scale project and should be considered as part of a public realm improvement scheme. A source of funding for a project on this scale has yet to be identified,” they said.

One of the finest eating establishments, not only in Swords, but the entire North County area, has undertaken major upgrade works, in an effort to improve their customers’ dining experience. M a s t e r s o n s Steakhouse and Wine Bar, situated on Main Street, Swords, was established seven years ago and proprietor, Robbie Masterson spoke to the County Leader about the improvements at his restaurant. He said, “Swords has been extremely good to us and we want to bring the restaurant to the next level. We want to give something back to the public and that’s what we have done here,” he said. “It was time for renovations and we feel that the main street in Swords is coming back and we want to do our part to
help that.” Masterson is very happy that Swords is now becoming a go-to place for entertainment. “Top new pubs, restaurants and shops are now opening up in the town, which is very welcome. The town is becoming a destination and is now on the move.” The renovation includes a full fit-out downstairs, with the upstairs having been completed last November. The renovation has resulted in the restaurant reducing its capacity by four, with the loss of two seats. “It makes the restaurant more comfortable for our customers and I have always felt that there’s no point in having a restaurant that is jam packed with customers, but they’re not happy. This is all about our customers enjoying their experience here,” he said. CEO of Fingal Dublin
Chamber, Tony Lambert congratulated Robbie on the upgrade to Mastersons. He said, “Mastersons Restaurant have invested significantly in refurbishing their premises which is very popular with many diners from Swords and throughout the wider region. Robbie Masterson is thanking his customers by improving the ambience of the restaurant and by making it more attractive to enjoy food in a comfortable setting. This is yet another example of how restaurants and bars in Swords are working hard to attract more customers whilst giving a quality service to the existing customers. They are succeeding and must be congratulated and encouraged to continue on this path.”

There were great celebrations among the management and staff of Casey’s SuperValu in Lusk, when they recently won the Shelf Life National Grocery Management Awards 2015 in the category of Best Team Performance. Speaking to General Manager of SuperValu Lusk, Trevor Kearns, it is no surprise that this progressive shop came out on top. Trevor told the County Leader, “Everyone is incredibly proud of the award, especially as we have been finalists for the past two years in the same category. This means a huge amount to the staff here, because we put in a lot of hard work and effort into this and it’s great to get recognition on a national level,” he said. SuperValu Lusk have the local community at the centre of their ethos, and everything they do is community focused. They are not afraid to go the extra mile to ensure that their customers are front and centre in everything they do. This policy is perfectly exemplified by two acts of, what amounts to common decency and kindness that harks back to a time when neighbours looked out for one another. Trevor spoke about the two incidents that set

this store apart from the norm. “We like to do a lot of events in-store, where we can give something back to our customers, demonstrating that we are not just a retail establishment. One of the events was a Halloween colouring competition, with a magician, games etc. There was one particular boy who had special needs and when he and his parents came in, there was a large crowd present in the shop. It amounted to organised chaos, but even in this chaos, fellow team members, Leona Harford and Marie Wade managed to make time for this boy. At the time, we thought nothing of it – we just wanted to make sure that everyone was looked after,” said Trevor. He continued, “Sometimes we don’t think about what affect our actions, as a business, can have on other people and their families as well. A small, insignificant act of kindness can change a person’s day. The upshot of it all is that the boy’s father felt compelled to write us a lovely letter to tell us how his son was made very welcome by us, and every time he comes into the store with his son, the service he gets makes it easier for him to go about his shopping. We put the fridge in the van and brought it around to the customer’s house and set it up for her. She was absolutely thrilled. It’s not all about making money, it’s about giving something back,“ said a proud Trevor. Trevor places great importance to being on the shop floor and meeting people and making sure that they are enjoying their shopping experience. He is also conscious of people who cannot get out to shop for whatever reason and he makes a point of making sure their groceries are delivered to them. The store also made sure that every child who visited Santa at their Christmas Event left with a present at no charge. There is no doubt that SuperValu Lusk have brought customer service and care to new heights and they have succeeded in introducing fun into shopping. As Trevor says, “It’s not necessarily what it will cost, as there’s a cost to everything - it’s about how we can surprise and delight our customers,” he said.
“Our motto is all about being local and being part of the community. There are lots of other supermarkets and large multinationals that are great with their marketing and say things like ‘We’re proud to be Irish and to promote local’, but there’s a big difference between having this on a billboard and actually doing it. We do it and believe in it,” said Trevor.
SuperValu also use local produce, where possible in their store, thus guaranteeing freshness and a longer shelf life. “One of our fruit and veg suppliers is local man, Fergie McGee and we will soon be selling Lusk honey, supplied by Brendan Herlihy, who is the only bee keeper in Lusk who is producing his own honey. Unfortunately there is very little Irish honey on the market and we are looking forward to the arrival of Lusk Honey. We love to give local producers a chance to sell their produce here,” SuperValu holds a Food Academy
where local producers get a chance to exhibit their goods. Cool Beans, run by two Rush ladies were successful here. Of course, Country Crest is a huge local producer of food used here in SuperValu. As well as this, nearly all of our 60 staff, including students come from the local area,” he said. Trevor pays tribute to store owners, Robert and Jackie Casey, “without whom none of us would exist as a team. They are so supportive of both myself and the staff and provide us with the motivation to get on and be an award winning team,” he said. SuperValu Lusk has succeeded in bringing back the neighbourhood shop, where the management and staff know their customers by name, making them feel special and included in the shop’s activities. Many fun events are held on a regular basis, which shoppers love. One such community event took the shoppers by surprise, which Trevor recalls with fondness. “It was during our Italian Food and Wine event, when we had surprise opera singers posing as staff. They pretended to fight and then broke out into Italian opera, which took shoppers completely by surprise. Another surprise for shoppers on the day, was a draw for a trip for two to Lake Garda in Italy, courtesy of Tom Walsh at Tristar Travel in Skerries.

Many Muslim families from across the North County converged on St Colmcille’s GAA club in Swords last Thursday to celebrate Eid alAdha. Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah’s (God’s) command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Muslims around the world observe this event. At Eid al-Adha, many Muslims make a special effort to pray and listen to a sermon at a mosque. They also wear new clothes, visit family members and friends and may symbolically sacrifice an animal in an act known as qurbani. This represents the animal that Ibrahim sacrificed in the place of his son. families may purchase an animal known as udhiya, usually a goat or sheep, to sacrifice, but this is not common or legal in many parts of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States or many other countries. In these countries, groups of people may purchase a whole carcass from a butcher or slaughterhouse and divide it amongst themselves, or just buy generous portions of meat for a communal meal on Eid-al-Adha. People also give money to enable poorer members of their local community and around the world to eat a meat-based meal. In the period around Eid al-Adha, many Muslims travel to Mecca and the surrounding area in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.

Composed with a selection of the world’s most beautiful ingredients, a significant portion of them natural, unforgettable composition L’Eau de Parfum Intense by Lancome was designed by a trio of leading perfumers. La vie est belle takes on a new composition enriched with neverbefore-experienced notes. As ever a refined, gourmand iris, this Intense version of La vie est belle
PERFECT PERFUME adds two major assets to the composition: intriguing tuberose and exquisite hazelnut. Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo, the two perfumers who imagined La vie est belle and every one of its incarnations, reconsidered the composition to bring out certain accents as well as even more body and new-
found density.Intensity goes hand in hand with potency, and this fragrance is even more concentrated than the Eau de Parfum, with both compositions among the most potent on the market.

Review – Oh Come All Ye Tasteful This review is about the book “Oh Come All Ye Tasteful” by Ian Flitcroft from 2015, published by Legend Times Group. It is an interestingly written, amusing cooking guide to “surviving” the Christmas festivities by serving your guests a dinner, adequate for a millionaire. It is a very entertaining and funny book, written in an amusing style and giving the reader new recipes and sugges- By Christine Loska tions for the menu as well as background information of the respective history. The author uses many quotes to support his information, for example from T.S. Eliot, Mark Twain and especially from Charles Dickens. Furthermore, most pages contain some cute and funny illustrations to attract the reader and to keep him curious about the rest of the book. Flitcroft gives a range of possibilities for the menu with some funny but rather unusual and non-standard recipes like square eggs or toast soldiers. Additionally, he supports his suggestions with background information, like the history of champagne. His way of writing is very entertaining and often quite ironic, which gives the book something special. He uses a lot of sarcasm, metaphors and quotes to present his recipes in a unique, picturesque and interesting way, which raises the reader’s interest to continue. Furthermore, he uses sophisticated vocabulary and his writing is very well researched, especially due to his journeys around the world. Although the subtitle “The Foodie’s Guide to a Millionaire’s Christmas Feast” already indicates that the author’s suggestions are rather expensive, the introduction conveys that the book can help the reader to create an impressive Christmas dinner. This might be hard for the less wealthy people, because some of the recommended groceries cost a lot, especially Aperitifs and Wines, and Flitcroft hardly offers cheaper alternatives. But it can really help the more discerning people to serve an extraordinary dinner, not only because the food is of high quality, but the ingredients and the recipes are unique and special, like nibbles made of Reindeer meat. For those who do not want to spend too much money, the book can be quite entertaining as well, because of Flitcroft’s funny and interesting style, so it offers something for everyone.
Property Tax Cut Maintained The County Council has agreed to maintain the 15 per cent cut property tax for local households. As part of a Fianna Fail motion, the cut was agreed by councillors, with the exception of Labour, the Green Party and some independents who were against the move. Local Senator Darragh O’Brien said, “This will provide at least some relief to local families who are struggling to manage the litany of extra bills and taxes imposed over the past two years.” “In April of this year, Fianna Fáil published a detailed review of the Local Property Tax. In that review we spelled out the problems with the Government’s model and spelled out an immediate and radical overhaul. Under our proposals the existing property tax bands should continue to apply until at least 2020,” he added. “It is clear that households in the North County are heavily penalised by this form of tax. The reduction of 15 per cent will bring some relief but the council’s hands are tied beyond this. I am again calling on the Government to support our proposals at a national level to help ease the burden of property tax on local households.” Meanwhile, Labour councillor Duncan Smith explained why his party put forward a Motion to reduce the property tax by just 10 per cent. “ The Labour group on the Council put forward a Motion to reduce the property tax by 10 pe cent which would have reserved an extra €1.87 million specifically for housing, housing maintenance and homeless services. It would have been a relatively modest increase in the housing budget, but one much needed at this difficult time,” Smith explained.

Proud Day For Balbriggan School Friday, 18th of September was a very proud day for SS Peter and Paul JNS in Balbriggan as they welcomed Lieutenant Martin McMahon and Corporate Brian Geraghty from the Defence Forces as part of the Flags for Schools Initiative. They presented pupils Julia, Lorcan and Sam with the Irish flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation. As part of Ireland’s Centenary Programme to commemorate the 1916 Rising next year, every primary school in the North County
and beyond will be presented with the Irish flag. S.S. Peter and Paul’s were lucky to be one of the first schools selected. The whole school was entertained in the yard with a poem and reading from the Proclamation by Julia, readings from Lorcan and Sam, some lively Irish dancing from Iveta and Robert. Ms Ní Mhaonaigh’s 2nd class stood proud and sang Amhrán na bhFiann beautifully. Thanks go to the pupils, staff, parents, members of the Board of Management and Lieutenant McMahon and Corporate Geraghty for helping to celebrate this special day.

Great Day Out For Swords Students Recently, the Transition Year (TY) classes of Fingal Community College in Swords experienced a thrilling two day adventure break in Carlingford, Co Louth. This was the first oppor tunity for the group to get to know each other and to try out new activities. Some of the activities included Canadian canoeing, zip lining
and laser combat. In each activity their communication, listening and team working skills were put to the test as they battled to complete each task. The highlight for many students was Canadian canoeing and jumping on a trampoline in the middle of Carlingford. Students also experienced one of the
biggest zip line courses in Ireland as they tackled the complex array of zip lines, rock climbing towers, suspension bridges, Tarzan swings and tightropes. Later that evening, students took part in a murder mystery tour around the picturesque village. The final day gave the students another chance to develop their team working skills as they took par t in laser combat in a nearby forest. Great tactics were deployed by both teams and a game of “catch the teddy” had to be completed to decide the victorious team. For many students, this adventure break was a chance to make new friends and to step out of their comfort zone and to try new things. If this outing is anything to go by, this is set to be will be a positive and productive year for all involved in the TY programme in the Swords school.

Let’s say it’s the bedroom, in that case there are small improvements that will make your room look like a new boudoir. New curtains and blinds are a start, to make the window a beautiful feature in your bedroom and you can still have that minimal look. Under bed storage boxes and bags are a great way to store some of your things. You should also take advantage of your attic, if you have one. Once all of your belongings are sorted and tidied, try scattering a few cushions on your bed and clearing bedside lockers. Try a nice lamp on your bedside locker that will match your curtains or bed clothes.
Decoration Think about things you’d like to get changed the most in your home and make it happen. Look at the condition of your floors, windows, doors, walls and such. Ask for a specialist (we have plenty of them here in the North County) to help you plan it if the project seems too big to undertake alone.
Garden A neatly kept garden is the first impression a visitor gets of your house. This first impression is lasting and if your garden is not kept up to scratch, it’s unlikely that your home will be any better. Now is the perfect time to start tidying up your garden, which shouldn’t be in too bad a shape, as we had a reasonable summer. Local Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) recently met with the President of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Eddie Downey to highlight the need to protect local fruit and vegetable producers. Speaking at the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party think-in in Howth recently, O’Brien outlined the threat to local growers of below cost-selling by big multiples. “A fair price for produce is the foundation of the agriculture sector. Local fruit and vegetable growers must be supported in maintaining a fair price for their goods.
It is unacceptable that primary producers are left at the mercy of large grocery stores engaged in below cost selling,” said O’Brien.

North County Some Uncertainty Over Benefit Of DART Extension Excels Again Continued from page 1 “These plans are nothing short of pathetic. While on the surface extending the DART seems like a positive announcement for North County Dublin, the reality is that this alone will not improve capacity on the line. In fact, there are real fears that the move will result in a scaling back of the highly valuable commuter train services serving Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush&Lusk, Donabate and the north county,” he said. He took a swipe at Paschal Donohoe when he said, “If the Transport Minister thinks that the DART is a viable replacement for commuter trains, he is sorely mistaken. Both modes of transport offer an important service to North County communities, and both are packed well beyond capacity at rush hour on a daily basis. What the Minister should be doing is looking at increasing the reach and capacity of both services. We need a firm commitment from him now that the commuter trains, which offer quick transport into town, will be maintained in full,” he concluded. His namesake and Green Party General Election candidate, Joe O’Brien also has hit out at Minister Pascal Donohoe’s plans for the rail system in North County Dublin. He said, “I don’t think the northern line
commuters I share the train with during the week will be very excited about a seven year wait for improvements to the service provided for Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk, Donabate, Malahide and Portmarnock.” “That is, of course if they have a seat, which is increasingly hard to come by on these overloaded trains in the morning and evening. Given this government’s disinterest in public transport I think this can at best be seen as a weak election promise,” he said. Barry Kenny of Iarnród Eireann told the County Leader that capacity is certain to be increased. “The DART extension to Balbriggan will definitely lead to more capacity, because any new project of this size is aimed at providing for growth. As Balbriggan will be a terminus, we will be constructing additional sidings there to facilitate trains to return to the city. There will be a lot of work on foundations, substations and signalling, but from an engineering stand, there will be no issue. Kenny envisages that the project should take no longer that four years to complete, two years for design and statutory approval and a further two years for construction. It’s all about meeting demand and is part of the overall plan to bring DART to Drogheda,” he said.

As is usual, the standard reached was incredibly high. While it was a great day for those who were recognised for their achievements, much credit and praise must go to all of the towns and villages who gave of their all to impress the judges. Every evening, tireless volunteers could be seen tidying their districts. These volunteers are the cornerstone of our society and reflect volunteerism at its very best. Without these unsung heroes, our areas would be all the poorer, and credit must be given to them, for without them, none of this would be possible. Their work and commitment was no less intense than that of the winners, so they can look forward to next year and draw inspiration from the wonderful achievements of Skerries, Lusk and Malahide. Well done to all our wonderful Tidy Towns volunteers.
on carbon monoxide, the lethal gas which claims the lives of six people across the country each year. Carbon monoxide (also known as CO) can be released by any fuel that burns, including coal, turf, oil, gas and wood, however there are two simple steps which people can take to safeguard against it: Get fuel-burning appliances serviced and chimneys swept
every year and install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your home. Speaking on behalf of Age Action at the launch of the single, Justin Moran, Head of Advocacy and Communications said, “We’re delighted to be involved in this important campaign to help educate people across the locality on the dangers associated with carbon monoxide. Recent research carried out prior to the campaign shows that 100,000 people over the age of 65 and living alone are at risk of CO because they don’t have a carbon monoxide alarm. We want to do all that we can to raise awareness to ensure older people are safe from carbon monoxide in their homes.”

Let’s Attract Our Young People Home Fine Gael MEP, Brian Hayes has highlighted the disparity between Irish tax rates and those of our close competitors who compete not only for our trade but also for our educated young.

night. Under the category of Place, Swords demonstrated that it is a stimulating destination and a vital place. The assessors also reported that Swords’ greatest asset is clearly its location and increasing population and that the development of the ‘cultural quarter’ is welcome and an exciting prospect for the town. The Wright Venue, Ireland’s largest entertainment venue clearly impressed the assessors who reported that it is an example of ‘best in class’. The assessors said that from the very visible customer care, health and safety policies, comprehensive standard operating procedures and immediate updating of information via a bespoke mobile app, the senior staff and team leaders in this venue were most impressive. “Let’s paint the town purple,” said
resulted in this fantastic award. I particularly want to thank Noeleen McHugh and Toni Hogan in Fingal County Council for the trojan work they put into this.” He continued, “The collaboration between the Council, local businesses, gardai and many other stakeholders , shows the way forward . More collaboration between everyone will make Swords an even better place. The Chamber looks forward to participating in and providing leadership as part of this collaboration,” he said. Toni Hogan, Purple Flag CoOrdinator from Fingal County Council said “Collaboration is the keystone of the Purple Flag process and all the partners in this initiative worked extremely hard to achieve Purple Flag status.” Paul Reid, Chief Executive of
nesses for playing their part in providing an enjoyable experience for visitors,” he said. Philip Kolvin QC, Chairman of the Purple Flag Board said: “The sustained growth of the Purple Flag initiative is highlighting the important challenge of creating a balanced, safe and vibrant night-time offering. Each area achieving this award has displayed how local organisations working together in partnership with the public can create positive and innovative outcomes. It is inspiring to witness the ongoing diversity of efforts from all accredited towns; old and new alike.” Swords will officially receive the Purple Flag accreditation along with five towns who have had their status renewed at an awards ceremony on the 3rd November in Guildford, Surrey.
By Cathal Boland Hayes, speaking in Dublin said: “Ireland is an extreme outsider as regards tax rates on single people when compared to our four main English speaking competitors.” Commenting on moves for increased tax transparency, he said that this must not be done out of sync with other countries. He went on: “We should also remember that this is not about moving towards a harmonised EU tax system. Tax competition between Member States is good for business. The EU has no competency on corporate tax rates – this is a matter solely for Member States. When tax matters are decided at EU level, there should be respect given to the unanimity principle, which means that tax proposals must be agreed unanimously by Member States before being adopted.” On the central stage the question of quantitative easing is back on the agenda. Mario Draghi
the head of the European Central Bank has said that economic conditions had become more challenging over the summer. He would not be drawn on what the bank’s intentions are. But it is clear that with the weaker than expected recovery of the EU economy and the ongoing low inflation rate serious consideration must be given to further boosting the QE programme. While Tsipras won the greater proportion of the votes in the recent Greek election he was again forced to find partners to form a government. One appointment from the Nationalist Independent Party managed to stay in office for just twelve hours. He resigned as deputy transport Minister following a series of social media posts which had homophobic, racist and antisemitic content. In Germany Chancellor Merkel is facing difficulties which were aired when she meet with the PMs of the individual states. Merkel has moved to address the PMs’concerns over her approach to the immigrant crisis. The Chancellor has responded by committing additional funding to support the individual states with the cost associated with the settlement programme. She has also committed to amending the asylum laws. Merkel said “We want to protect those who need it,” while continuing yet on the other hand, we want to clarify, that those who don’t have the right be here have to leave.” This highlights the need for all EU states to pursue a common policy evenly and fairly implemented.
