WE NEED

ACTION, Not Words The recent announcement by Transport Minister, Paschal Donohoe, that six transport options are on the table for North County Dublin, including a light rail system, is certain to exercise the electorate in the North County. It is now time for local residents to stand up and demand a proper transport system, and to say “Enough is Enough’ and that the only acceptable one is light rail. We don’t need more buses clogging up our roads. A light rail system serving Swords and the airport, with the city centre, is the only viable solution to our dire transport problems. It is now time to stop electioneering and

By Patrick Finnegan deliver on this promise at last. About €165 million has already been invested in the original Metro North plan before being shelved. Why is there any need to renegotiate this again? This would be an outrageous waste of money, were this not to proceed. The message from residents is very clear. They don’t need

any more buses, they want light rail. Fianna Fail have been using the promise of a light rail project for North County Dublin for the past three general elections. Under Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, they promised it’s delivery and the party’s election candidates in this constituency, have regularly used this as their principal issue in elections. They have never followed through on it. This, despite the country experiencing good economic times, and Fianna Fail being the main party in successive governments, that served full terms in office. Since then, not one, but two Luas systems have been delivered to the southside of the city. These excellent Luas systems have improved the standard of living and comfort for people there. All the vital services like hospitals and colleges, are now easily accessible along the Luas lines. The fact that we have an international airport in the North County, without light rail transport, beggars belief and must be a source of amazement for visitors to the country. In the last general election, all parties, including Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour, espoused the importance of what was then, Metro North. But once again, the government of the day, failed the electorate. Such a system would benefit the entire North County region, not just Swords. It would be used by commuters from Balbriggan, Continued on page 21

Molly On Special Santa Flight Little Molly McNally, the six year old Balbriggan girl, who suffers from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, had a wonderful surprise last week. She, along with 30 children from Temple Street Children’s Hospital, got to visit Santa’s secret training ground in the skies. They were guests on the City Jet Santa flight, and Molly was given a special invitation by the company. She was joined by her father, Gerry and mother, Emma, as the children enjoyed an hour long flight in the company of Santa, his elves and his little helpers. The fun got underway at Dublin Airport, as the children enjoyed Christmas carols, face painting and party games, before taking to the air. Students from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan.

entertained the children with carols, in the company of television presenter, Brian Ormond. A wonderful day’s activities concluded with a party at City Jet’s headquarters in Swords. Molly’s mam and dad, Emma and Gerry, were delighted that Molly was invited to join the children from Temple Street on the magical journey. “We want to thank everyone at City Jet for providing a special day for Molly, that will live long in the memory. It was a special moment when Santa appeared on the plane, by magic. It was a really wonderful occasion, which meant so much to Molly and all the children. Afterwards, we were treated to a party at City Jet headquarters in Swords, and we want to thank them for including Molly on this special day,” they said.

Christmas Travel Advice From Dublin Airport Dublin Airport is asking passengers not to gift wrap Christmas presents, if they are carrying them in hand luggage at the security screening area this holiday season. “Many passengers take a lot of time to carefully wrap Christmas gifts for family and friends overseas. We would ask them not to wrap these gifts, otherwise they may be disappointed if they are requested to open them at

the passenger security screening area,” a Dublin Airport spokesperson told the County Leader. “We would also like to remind passengers that the EU liquid restriction regulation is still in place, and passengers should pack gifts in bottles or containers measuring more than 100ml into their checked in luggage. These security measures are in place to improve passenger safety at the airport.” Dublin Airport would like to thank all passengers for their co-operation and wish them a Happy Christmas.

Some years ago, a woman in the US was caught by a policeman looking in parked cars at a shopping mall for goods. Atlanta city policeman Gil Fernandez then arrested her the next day, she was taken to be released, but before she left, he gave her $10.000 and told her not to worry about paying it back.

A nurse in Vermont did one simple act of kindness that set off a chain reaction, which changed a whole lot of lives, including hers. Kathleen Connors of Barre, Vermont, is a regular at the L&M Diner and after winning some money playing bingo, she decided to share her good fortune by buying breakfast for a father and son at the diner. When the waitress told the father and son their bill had been paid, they were inspired to do the same. So they anonymously took care of someone else’s tab. This goodwill continued for the next seven hours, with 46 more diners paying for other people’s meals.

An anonymous do-gooder recently struck Michigan City with serial acts of kindness. Donations have been mailed to community groups by a sender who only identifies as ‘Anonymous - 1679.’ So far, envelopes, each filled with $1,000 cash, have been sent to the local library, an animal welfare non-profit, a civic and leadership training group, a credit union and the Redford Goodfellows, a group that helps needy families get holiday meals and gifts for their children.

A teenager’s good deed may have saved Christmas for another teen. Kalen Stimpson from North Texas had more than $300 on a paycheque debit card when her pink wallet wound up lost. Kewpie Steward came across the missing wallet. She not only found the wallet; she spent $6 of her own money to mail it to the address she found inside, and included a lovely note along with it.

The Spirit of HEROES

Six-year-old Addie from Utah has an undiagnosed illness that has halted her growth since she was three. Doctors have said she is terminally ill and so earlier this month, her grandmother came up with an idea to ask people from around the globe to send her Christmas cards to cheer her up. One judge sent a signed and stamped court order for Addie to have a Merry Christmas. One little boy sent a hand-written note telling her he was her boyfriend. The colourful cards arrived from all over the globe, and it was said she received hundreds of cards each day.

A Toronto grandmother went to buy her special needs grandson a gift for Christmas recently, but didn’t expect an act of kindness in return. Pat Montgomerie was looking for a Toronto Raptors hat and toque at a local sports store and asked a 16year-old boy beside her what colour she would get. She didn’t expect what happened next: The teen surprisingly decided to pay for the toque for her because he felt “Christmassy.”

Holly Cooper from Alabama went shopping with her youngest son, Jesse, when an unexpected act of kindness restored her holiday spirit. Jesse struggles with behavioural control at times, so not getting what he wanted at a store meant throwing tantrums. He really wanted a toy this particular time and when his mother said he had to wait until Christmas, the manager and the cashier of the store decided to buy it for him.

At a particularly sensitive time for police forces around the country, one department in Michigan is inspiring people with its own version of goodwill and generosity. Officers from the Lowell, Michigan, police department surprised plenty of drivers last month, when they were pulled over for routine traffic stops. Instead of tickets, the unsuspecting motorists were about to receive gifts from their very own Christmas lists. Officer Scot VanSolkema acted as the department’s Santa, wearing a hidden camera and microphone as he chatted up drivers after he pulled them over. He asked them what they wanted for the holidays, all while fellow officers were listening in and scrambling at a local store to rush items from the drivers’ wish lists to the scene.

While dining out at Paulie’s Pizza in Dublin, a kind stranger arranged to cover the entire cost of a couple’s meal. They only found out at the end of the meal when they asked for the bill, by which time the unknown man had left. And what’s particularly special about his good deed is that he does this every year.

Swords Woman Launches New Poetry Collection

Skerries Rower, Adam Burke

Skerries Man Stars In Record Breaking Documentary A local man from Skerries was the focus on in a new documentary, recently broadcast on RTE2. ‘One Ocean: No Limits,’ was the first ever Irish documentary on the subject of Ocean Rowing featuring Adam Burke from Skerries. This no-budget Irish 52-minute documentary, followed Burke, a novice rower, through the highs and lows of rowing completely unsupported, as part of a crew of six across the vast Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Barbados. This feature was the first Irish documentary

on the subject of the extreme sport of ocean rowing. It subsequently allowed the audience to become part of a recordbreaking crew of six men, on board the ocean rowing boat the Sara G – a crew who only met a few days before setting out on their momentous task. Burke completed this momentous task in 2011, as part of a six man strong team attempting to row the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Barbados in a purpose-built ocean rowing boat called Sara G. They departed Morocco on Wednesday, January

Swords woman, Verona Pentony has just launched a new book of poetry, at a reception at St Audeon’s Church in the city. The launch was attended by many of her family, friends and supporters from Swords and Ballyboughal, and the Ballyboughal choir delighted the gathering with some lovely seasonal songs and carols. The book, called ‘Reflections of Time’ is her second published collection, which is all about world peace, politics, nature and the passing of 5th 2011 and had to arrive in Barbados, not later than 7.30pm on February 9th, in order to get the current world record, which they did. Operating a gruelling two hours on, two hours off schedule over a 24 hour period, the crew of six survived on minimal sleep. The project took over three years of filming and editing before completion. In addition, he is also in the midst of building a new Irish-designed and built ocean rowing boat, in order to captain his own crossing and beat his own world records in 2016.

Reflections Writer,” she said. Verona is a poet with a love of humanity and of nature, and has visited and participated in many literary festivals throughout Ireland, including Listowel Writers’ Week. She was born in Swords, where her grandfather, Paddy Pentony was a very well known businessman, as the owner of the mill, where the Castle Shopping Centre is now located. “My father had a farm machinery business, and through that, we moved to Ballyboughal, where I still live,” she said. Verona comes from a farming background has a very deep love of the countryside, as her mother, Betty Pentony comes from near Cloone in Co Leitrim. Farming life is very important to her, and she speaks passionately about how the land is embedded in the soul of the farmer.

Local woman, Deirdre Kelleghan was recently invited by Lusk National School to carry out a workshop, titled ‘Deadly Moons’ for the pupils. Over the course of two sessions, over 200 children from the local school attended this workshop. Deadly Moons is an award winning workshop, which teaches children about amazing moons in our solar system as well as the moon itself. “My workshop was awarded The Science Prize for Online Resources in Education from the American Association for the Advancement of Science,” she explained to the County Leader. She went on to explain the reason for the workshop’s somewhat

quirky title: “I called it ‘Deadly Moons,’ because hundreds of children who have looked at the moon in my telescope say “ that’s deadly!” she said. “It has been several years since I had a request to run this drawing workshop and it was as much fun as ever.” She said that the children were very proud of their work. “The floor of the school hall was a rainbow of colour in the aftermath, as 220 moons departed the hall for the classrooms,” she continued. I want to say a big thanks to the teachers of Lusk National School for their co-operation in this event which had been postponed from Science Week 2014,” she concluded.

ECB Set For Quantitative Easing At Last The ECB President, Mario Draghi says the board will consider the process of quantitative easing in the coming year. This stimulus process would include the purchase of government bonds could go ahead without unanimity of the board. This, coupled with the phrase in his statement that the bank intends to expand its balance sheet by around €1 trillion seems to signal quite clearly that the message has finally arrived, that the current policies are not succeeding in enlivening the euro economy. This general economic flat lining is felt, not only in individual pockets, but also in the ballot boxes across Europe. Unless a serious

By Cathal Boland restart in growth becomes apparent to the average voter, then we will see the radical change of governments throughout Europe. On the 1st January 2015, Lithuania will adopt the euro as its currency and become the 19th state to use the currency. Their joining the ECB triggers a change in how decisions are taken at the bank. Until now there were 24 votes comprising of the existing 18 members and the 6 executive members. Now there will be a reduction to 21 votes to

Locals Triumph In Art Competition A painting by 14-year old local student Juliette Cunnane, from Malahide Community School, has been chosen to illustrate the 2015 Texaco Children’s Art Calendar. Set to brighten up thousands of homes across the North County during the month of January, her colourful painting, entitled ‘Pepper Still Life’, is one of thirteen chosen to illustrate the publication and was said by a competition adjudicator to be a work that “perfectly highlights the sheer talent and skill that many young people possess in Ireland and

the essential role played by schools, who encourage and inspire their students by providing high standards in art education”. Another local work chosen to illustrate the calendar is ‘Feathered Friends’ by seven-yearold Bailey Jones from The Art Academy, Rush whose painting will feature throughout the month of December. Bailey won second place in the 7-8 years age category of the 2014 competition, while Juliette won a Special Merit Award. Both works have since been on exhibition in various locations throughout the North County. Calendars are currently available through a select number of Texaco service stations countrywide and through Texoil, their homeheating division.

be shared as follows, the executive will retain their 6 votes, Germany, France Italy, Spain and Netherlands will have to share four votes and the remaining 14 members will then have eleven votes between them. While all can participate in the general debate, only those eligible by rotation will be entitled to cast a vote. They say most of the decisions at the ECB are taken by way of consensus so it should not matter who holds the votes. But there must be an angle, particularly when the executive hold a solid six votes before the game commences. Lynn Boylan SF’s Dublin MEP raises concerns that proposed gender equality on boards may be dropped at European level. It is important that there is gender equality, ensuring that both female and males are represented on at board level. It is just as important that those appointed are competent and operate with integrity.

Balbriggan School Is Top Of The Class Recently, The Irish Times’ Feeder Schools report listed Balbriggan Community College, as one of the most improved schools in the country for providing a platform for third level education. Balbriggan Community College was also listed as the top

feeder school in the North County for third level. It was the fifth highest nationally, with 86 per cent of its Leaving Cert students from 2014 progressing to third level education. Ironically, the news broke in the midst of the celebration of College Awareness

Week, an event which is placed firmly in the school’s calendar. This academic school year has seen the local school selected to take part in a global initiative (College for Every Student) in collaboration with Trinity College and Google. This initiative involved

available for their work with young people in their communities. Minister Reilly said: “I am very pleased to be in a position to announce the allocation of these grants to the 50 successful applicants. These youth services do vital work in communities in our society. The provision of the funding underscores the Government’s commitment to enhance the quality of services which add such value to our communities,” he said. The Minister particularly recognises the commitment of the many volunteers involved in assisting and managing youth projects throughout the country. This voluntary effort, combined with the professionalism and dedication of youth service employees, makes a significant contribution to ensuring the lives of young people are enhanced and improved through the services offered by youth projects. The grant scheme remains open for applications in early 2015 for capital projects related to health and safety improvements to premises.

Balbriggan Group Warns Locals Of Bogus Collectors The Balbriggan\North County branch of Irish guide dogs for the Blind have urged residents to be wary of bogus collectors going door-to-door in Balbriggan, claiming they are collecting on behalf of the group. The group told the County Leader that two young men were going door to door collecting money in Fancourt Heights in Balbriggan recently on behalf of the group. They were also told that another young man was going door-todoor in the Tara Cove area of the town with a sponsorship card, where he said he was doing a sponsored “Climb of Croagh Patrick.” “The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind’s national policy is that door-todoor collections are never done anywhere,” the group said. “So please, if these two young men turn up at your door, ask them firstly for I.D. and their permit to do such a collection, and if you get no clear answer, please ring the Gardai,” they said. “Nobody in the Balbriggan branch or head office in Cork is aware of any sponsored climb of Croagh Patrick. No sponsorship cards were issued to anybody from the local branch or from head office. If somebody out there does know of somebody who is doing either of the above and they know the people are genuine, please contact the local branch,” they concluded.

AA Meetings In Balbriggan AA Balbriggan group meets at the Failte Building, Old St George’s School on Hampton Street in the town every Tuesday and Sunday at 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

The Spirit of PETS A festive sweater wearing sheep became an internet sensation after being found wandering around an Omaha neighbourhood one night. The hashtag #ChristmasSheep soon started trending on social media, as a campaign to send him home spread across the world. Thankfully, the news eventually reached his owner Margaret Vazquez. She retrieved her pet named Gage from the Nebraska Humane Society. A young child in the US got the best Christmas present ever when she was reunited with her dog. One Christmas Day, seven-year-old Mia Bendray, happily wrapped her arms around her dog Marley, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, who had been stolen from outside a shop in Manhattan that Christmas Eve. The dog was rescued by Tina Cohen, a Spanish teacher, who came across a man yelling that he had a dog for sale. When he man demanded more cash, Cohen said she bought Marley back for $200 and quickly took the dog to the veterinarian that treats her own dogs. Winnie, a 14 year-old cat from Indiana saved her family’s life one Christmas. The cat had a tradition of snoozing on the windowsill of her family’s bedroom. One winter day, her owner Cathy, borrowed a gas-powered water pump for their basement to suction water out after a flood. She turned off the pump, shut all the windows, bar the one her cat lay beside, to keep out the cold air. However, carbon monoxide from the pump had built up in the basement and began going through the house. As the air in the house became toxic, the clever cat leapt from her perch beside her owner and meowed and scratched her until she woke up. Cathy was dizzy from the gas, but stayed awake long enough to call 911 and was treated (along with her husband and son) for severe carbon monoxide poisoning. A rescuer on the scene told her that if Winnie hadn’t woken her up, their family could’ve died within minutes. Benjy the ‘gay bull’ looks set to have a very merry Christmas as he recently arrived at his new home, having been saved from the slaughterhouse. The bull, from County Mayo, was set to be slaughtered due to his sexual orientation. However, he was saved after his plight attracted global attention thanks to animal rights groups and donations from around the world, including co-creator of The Simpsons, Sam Simon. Benjy was being fattened for the butcher after his farmer owner complained he was not sexually interested in cows. Now he is set for a happier life at the Hillside Animal Sanctuary near the Norfolk village of Frettenham. All animals will go to heaven, apparently. The Pope was recently presented with the two donkeys, named Thea and Noah. At the recent service in St Peter’s Square the Pope also met and blessed rescue dogs, before saying: “Paradise is open to all God’s creatures.” His position is markedly different from that of Pope Benedict XVI, who said that the other animals ‘are not called to the eternal life.’ The donkeys will now go to live at the pope’s farm at the papal summer palace of Castel Gandolfo 30 miles outside Rome.

The unique story of Effie the dog, made headlines all around the world. The dog came to her owner through her work with the Last Day Dog Rescue group in Michigan in the USA. Six of the puppies in her litter were placed but her owner, Lisa Hulber, decided to keep Effie for herself. She credits Effie for detecting a tumour in her breast, that a mammogram failed to pick up. Not only did she sniff out the original tumour, she found the only lymph node it was on after Hulber underwent a biopsy. Hulber has since undergone a double mastectomy and chemotherapy with Effie by her side throughout.

Council Marks 20th Anniversary

GIBNEY’S CHRISTMAS HOMECOMING FESTIVAL 2014

Former and serving Councillors and retired Managers of the County Council, joined Chief Executive Paul Reid and County Mayor, Cllr Mags Murray at an evening of celebration, to mark the end of the 20th Anniversary year of the County Council at County Hall Swords last week. The mood was buoyant as the gathered guests looked forward together to another 20 years for the North County. Addressing the guests, Chief Executive Paul Reid said that “The North County has undergone a major transformation since we were first set up as a council 20 years ago. Throughout the boom and beyond it, right up to today, it is Ireland’s fastest growing county and the County Council has a vital role to play in leading and planning for that growth in a strategic way,” he said. “The positive jobs news evident in 2014, will continue in 2015 and we are beginning to see real signs of our recovery on the ground around the county,” he Chief Executive concluded.

A total of 120 primary school class projects will display at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition from 8th-10th January. The RDS Primary Science Fair encourages primary school teachers to focus on developing students’ core scientific skills, by investigating a question

or problem by ‘working scientifically’ and ‘designing and making’ as per the primary science curriculum. The projects from the five local schools have been carefully thought out. Balscadden N.S. are asking, ‘What methods and myths actually work to prevent ourselves crying while cutting up onions? Bracken Educate Together N.S. want to know, ‘Can body

Meanwhile, Donabate Girls’ School, Donabate are asking, “Does exercise have an effect on lung capacity? and St Mary’s N.S., Garristown want to know, ‘Do different liquids affect plant growth? Finally, St Patrick’s S.N.S Skerries are asking, ‘How do Lego Bionicle joints relate to human joints?

Charity Christmas Day Swim In Portmarnock The annual Christmas Day swim in Portmarnock in aid of St Francis Hospice is looming and the organisers are calling on locals from around the North County to get involved. Over ten years ago, the Jesson family of Onward Walk, Portmarnock, were devastated when their dad, Billy died from a rare brain tumour. They felt compelled to do something in his memory and thought it was important give something back to St Francis’s Hospice in Raheny, for all the care and support they received. The first Billy Jesson Christmas Swim took place the year he died in 2002 and was followed with a Golf Classic a year later. Over the past ten years, over 70,000 euro has been raised for the hospice. Times have changed and it is more difficult to raise money, but the Portmarnock community is a generous one and last Christmas Day, more than 80 locals braved the elements of the Irish Sea for this great cause. The coordinators of the event hope that this year the swim will be bigger and better. Why not join in for a swim, or just come down and soak up the atmosphere; the swim is

at 11.00am on Portmarnock Beach and it’s a great start to Christmas morning. You can set up a ‘mycharity

DON’T BE LEFT IN THE COLD 20KG Bag Keeping The House Warm If you are looking for ways to keep your home warmer this winter, here are some helpful tips you can try out.

Radiators Always remember to close the doors of all

the rooms that are not being used. This will contain the heat created in other parts of your house through radiators, fireplaces etc. A clever way to contain the heat created by radiators is putting tin foil behind them. This method will reflect the heat back into your house rather than letting it escape through the walls. Also,

make sure that your radiators are not being blocked by sofas, beds etc and having shelves above a radiator will keep warmth in as well.

Curtains Try to use thicker curtains if possible, as these are very effective at keeping heat in. Allowing sunlight in

during the daytime is a great way to let natural heat into your home, but remember to close your curtains as soon as you are no longer receiving sunlight. Try to cook as many meals as possible using your oven, as it is a great way of heating up your home. Ultimately the main tip is to focus on keeping yourself warm as well as your home. You can achieve this by wearing heavier clothing around the house like jumpers or robes, always remember to use your blankets as much as possible and lastly by drinking hot drinks or soups.

Home Improvement For much of the time during winter, you may be stuck at home because of the bad weather outside, but don’t let this extra time at home go to waste by working to improve the

space around you. Doing this will no doubt lift your spirits and help you become more organised in the run up to Christmas.

Car Preparations As it gets deeper into winter, the risk of icy roads becomes more and more apparent, so try to follow simple guidelines to make sure icy conditions doesn’t affect you this Christmas.

Charity Cycle In Malahide Malahide Charity Cycle which is in aid of Barnardos and Blossom Ireland, will take place on Saturday, December 20th at the Diamond in Malahide. Done as part of 100minds, the organisers aim to reach €150,000, with all proceeds going towards Blossom Ireland and Barnardos. Many local businesses and residents will be getting involved, and they would greatly appreciate all support on the day. “We are thrilled that 100minds have chosen to support Barnardos this year. This really means so much to us and in particular to the children and families we work with all across Ireland. Every cent raised from 100minds will go directly to support these children. We are extremely grateful and simply could not do the work we do without the generosity and support of you, so thank you,” added Fergus Finlay, Chief Executive of Barnardos.

Martin Outlines Fianna Fail Plans Fianna Fail leader, Micheál Martin dropped into the office of the County Leader on Tuesday last, on his way to the party’s candidate selection conference at the Carnegie Hotel in Swords. He spoke very frankly about issues affecting the North County. When asked why Fianna Fail had decided to run only one candidate in the constituency in the next general election, he said: “The bottom line, and to be straight up about it, is that we have no seats anywhere in Dublin, and therefore, we will be running tight tickets, and each constituency is different. Our fundamental aim is to regain a seat in every single Dublin constituency, and that’s going to be a difficult challenge,” he said. When asked if running a single candidate in this constituency was wise, given that Darragh O’Brien is so strong in the southern part of the constituency, and the possibility of Sinn Fein taking advantage in the northern part of the constituency, he said: “Our first priority is to win one seat and people need to be realistic about this. More than one candidate can split the vote. We ran too many candidates in 2011, and we paid the price for that,” he said. On the issue of the delivery of Metro North, or an equivalent light rail system for the North County, he said it is a vital

piece of infrastructure for the area. When asked to explain why Fianna Fail failed to deliver Metro, despite promises made by party leaders that light rail would be a reality, if elected, particularly when the economy was booming, he had this to say: “An enormous amount of progress was made on preparatory work across the board. With the collapse of the economy, it wasn’t possible to do a lot of the infrastructural work that was needed to be done.”

North County Leader reporter Patrick Finnegan talks to Fianna Fáil party leader, Micheál Martin TD

he said. “We will respond in plenty of time before the general election, but we are moving away from auction politics,” he said Martin was very critical of Irish Water, saying that €200 million was ploughed into the establishment of Irish Water, with 500 people working in call centres, and all for a return of just €20 million in revenue. “I think we should suspend the application of water charges and go back to the drawing board. Nowhere did the government take into consideration, the ability to pay.” He concluded the interview, by saying that he felt Darragh O’Brien was an excellent candidate. He is a very good legislator and is intelligent and diligent, He will bring a strong Dublin voice to the table. He is destined to make an impact, not only locally, but at a national level,” he said.

Perfect Gift For UK Relatives

The Performance Manifesto - A Review ‘The Performance Manifesto,’ written by Daragh Sheridan is a book which aims to help you visualise your dreams and trust in yourself in seven easy steps. This should not only help you in your professional life, but in every other area too. Nowadays, it is harder than ever to put our thoughts in a right order, sometimes we haven’t even enough time to do so; to breathe calmly and approach our dreams as most of us are standing in their own way and the necessary conviction to reach our aims is often missing. According the author, everybody can generate a state of consciousness that enables them to achieve whatever they are after in life, by using simple techniques that are easy to employ in your life each day. Doing this requires breaking the mould, and this not always easy. This book gives fantastic tips and tools, which are

Athina Anastasiou

both inspirational and practical, to challenge your habits and change familiar structures in everyday life. I found Daragh Sheridan’s tips, tools and examples, on how other people achieved their goals, interesting, but must admit that he failed to fully convince me, since at my still quite young age, I have fixed ideas of my own. I find it difficult to let these go, and be open and ready to broaden horizons and to put narrow perspective behind them in order to fully benefit from his soothing and motivating words. Despite my own experience with this book, I am convinced that it is nonetheless worth reading, as it can help you to manage unexpected situations, perform better in all aspects of personal and professional life, and help you to let go of stressful views which prevent us to perform at our best.

O’Brien Angry After Malahide Greenway Funding Refusal Green Party general election candidate for the North County, Joe O’Brien, has hit out at Minister Alan Kelly over reports that he ignored advice on the development of local greenway projects. “The decision not to allocate money to the Broadmeadow section of the North County coastal greenway between Malahide and Donabate, will mean that what could and should have been the jewel in the North County’s tourism crown will now not happen,” he said. “This decision will be a blow to local communities in Donabate and Malahide in particular. This coastal greenway could have run from Balbriggan to Sutton and has huge economic, employment, transport, social and health benefits, that have now all been scuppered by Minister Kelly,” he continued, angrily. “It does not take an expert to see that a cycleway along the coast of the North County would be an extraordinary tourist draw,” he added. “The people of the locality will not appreciate being shafted by this kind of politics” he concluded.

Renew Your Prescriptions In Time For Christmas The HSE North County’s Out of Hours GP service ‘D-Doc’ is urging people from around the North County to renew their prescriptions early in advance of Christmas and to ensure they have enough medication for the holiday season. They also asking patients to tend to routine and non-urgent matters through their own GP surgeries, where possible and to keep D-Doc for urgent out of hours care only. Where possible, patients should contact their own GP who will be running surgeries over the Christmas period. The D Doc service will

operate on Dec 24th, and all day on Dec 25th and 26th and Jan 1st as well as the usual weekend and evening service. Service on all other days is as per normal GP surgery arrangements. Dónal Cassidy, HSE Primary Care Services Manager said; “Patients from around the locality can help D Doc to operate as effectively as possible, by making sure they renew prescriptions with their GP in advance of the Christmas holiday period and ensuring they have enough medication to cover the holiday season. Our primary concern is to provide urgent GP care to patients of participating GPs who become ill outside of regular surgery hours. It is critical that these patients can access the D-Doc service promptly. We wish all our patients a healthy and happy Christmas season,” he concluded.

Continued from page 1 Skerries, Rush, Lusk and Donabate, as well as those in Swords. Commuters using the existing train service to the city centre will testify that there is standing room only from Balbriggan to the city. These travellers have to experience, what can only be described as ‘third world conditions’. They could drive to Swords, instead of adding to the already traffic chaos, on the way to the city. A light rail system will bring commuters to the airport and the city in speed and comfort, and will go a long way to taking cars off our already clogged up roads. People will use a light rail, but not necessarily buses. Informed opinion from all sources suggests that a light rail system, serving Swords and the airport to the city centre, is the only viable option acceptable to hard pressed citizens. Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid has only been at the helm in County Hall for a short few months, but he knows the importance of light rail in the area. He told the County Leader, “I welcome the process of engagement, and the fact that a light rail option is included in the shortlist. It is essential that we have a travel solution to support growth levels in Swords, and one that services

passengers between Swords, the airport, DCU and the city,” he said. Minister Donohoe must see the delivery of either a Luas or equivalent light rail system, not as a cheap political stroke to lure votes, but as the only viable solution to the ever growing transport problem in North County Dublin. Members of the public are invited to review the material and submit their views and opinions, before the consultation closes at 5:00pm on Monday, January 19th 2015.
