After having endured six years of austerity measures, the news that the economy is now making a strong recovery, will come as a sense of great relief to local shoppers. We always look forward to the New Year Sales, and the good news means that we are in a better position to avail of the many wonderful offers in our excellent shops, right across the county. We have endured the hardship of tough times, and now we deserve a little treat for ourselves. There’s nothing that we like more than a good bargain, and we are prepared to go the extra mile to secure one. In times past, this meant undertaking the arduous journey into the city. The North County has now become one of the most desirable locations, with many of the top retail shops located right here on our doorsteps. The January sales have always been one of the highlights of the retailing calendar year, and such is the array of fine shops in the North County, there’s no excuse to go elsewhere else, in search of that genuine bargain. All of the top retail stores are now located in our area, so why would we endure long traffic queues and expensive parking fees, to go into the city centre? ; it makes no sense at all. The hustle and bustle of crowded city centre streets, is something to strike terror into anybody. The great advantage of shopping local for the January sales, is that you are in a position to build up a relationship with your retailer. This is one of the great advantages of staying local. Often, shop owners and assis-
tants are people who may be known to you, and they can help you choose the best bargains, offer the best advice, and are always available if ever a problem arises. You are in a better position to strike an even better deal in the local shops, than in larger, less friendly city stores. Also, the after sales service and ease of access are compelling reasons to support the January sales in your local area. Another good reason for supporting local shops is that by doing so, you are helping to secure local jobs. Every town in the North County is full of shops offering great value in a range of products. The choice for discerning shoppers has never been better, and now is a great time to avail of these bargains. The pages of this paper are full to the brim with some of the most exciting products on the market, at the most unbelievable value imaginable. As with all great bargains, when they’re gone, they’re gone, so remember, you don’t have to move out of your own area to get that dream deal, but don’t delay too much. Enjoy the experience!

Swords based councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) had good news to report about the 41x bus service. He confirmed that the 41x bus will now use the Port Tunnel when returning to Swords in the evening, just as it does in the morning. Butler asked the Council Chief Executive at a recent Council meeting, “to make contact with Dublin Bus, with regard to the 41x still not using the Port Tunnel when returning to Swords in the evening, despite using it in the morning, and to ask Dublin Bus to make this change as soon as possible, for the benefit of Swords commuters.” The reply from Dublin Bus read, “In relation to route 41x, we propose to begin operating the evening 41x departures from UCD Belfield to Swords, via the Port Tunnel early in 2015.” Butler told the County Leader, “This is brilliant news for Swords residents, including myself. It’s been a long time annoyance that, whilst the 41x uses the Port Tunnel on the way into town each morning, that it does not do so on the way home each evening. I look forward to the evening 41x departures from UCD Belfield using the Port Tunnel, to get back to Swords in a more timely manner early in the New Year,” he said.

Local Citizens Information Service volunteers who have given over 20 years service were honoured at a special ceremony last January. The contribution of 11 volunteers from CISs in Kerry, Offaly, Dublin, Wexford, Kilkenny and Tipperary were recognised and each volunteer received a certificate and a commemorative bowl at the event which was hosted by the Citizens Information Board (CIB) and the National Association of Citizens Information Services (NACIS). January began with our first edition of the County Leader hitting shelves on the 14th of the month. It was to be a year of political upheaval on a local level, as 2014 saw the start of campaigning in the much anticipated local elections taking place in May. The political flurry of activity began right from the get go, as we encouraged residents to get out and prepare to vote in the coming months. Even in those early days, we already saw many wouldbe councillors setting their stalls out for the coming year, and this trend would continue right until May. The first month of the year also saw the much

The works undertaken saw the archway at the entrance to Swords Castle being repaired, a move that was broadly welcomed by local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF). Malahide residents also welcomed the new ‘Toots’ train to the town, a new mode of transport, which delighted children and adults alike. This brought great character to the Pictured here is Siobhan area. Town Hall. To put it mildly, this did not go down well around the locality, with hundreds taking to the streets to oppose the move. Such was the level of opposition, the County Council were forced to do a u-turn and back down on the issue. The library stayed put, and the power of the people emerged triumphant. In other issues, German supermarket giant, Lidl announced plans to locate a new store, beside Pinnock Hill roundabout in Swords, before quickly withdrawing their application. However, in December of this year, they announced plans to resubmit their application. Fingal Dublin Chamber then announced that they had elected a new President, Siobhan Kinsella. Siobhan, who has lived in Swords for the past 17 years, said that she was delighted and looked forward to Acting County Manager, Peter Caulfield at the time of the library taking on this new and exciting challenge. protests in Balbriggan. She took over from Siobhan O’Donnell, who served as President for the past three years, and who, as immediate Past President, continues to serve as a Director of the Chamber. The ambulance service in the North County also received a major boost in January, with the news that a new HSE Ambulance base is to be built at Lissenhall in Swords, with a second full time ambulance. It means that, when built, there will be two 24 hour ambulances, along with the new base in the Local councillor, Darragh Butler is pictured outside Swords Castle on Friday, 10th January area. last, as the stabilisation works at the archway to the Castle got underway.

Manager, with Council engineers in tow, paid a visit to Portrane beach. The proposed new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme, including routes from Swords / Airport to Dublin City, had initially been given a guarded welcome. This new service would effectively cut the bus travel time from Swords to O’Connell Bridge to 35 minutes. However, the project ran into the rocks, even before it got a chance to get started. Residents of Pine Grove, Mooretown, Broadmeadows, Castlegrange and Castlefarm estates in Swords came out in force, in a defiant show of strength against the new bus service, which was proposed to pass through a green area adjacent to their homes. Locals said the entire project smacks of an elaborate sham and is clearly deigned to replace the light railway system, that has been promised by local politicians for the last two Pictured are the JC's Butchers, as they presented a cheque for decades.

In a precursor to the water charge controversy later in the year, February saw water problems, both a lack of it and a surplus of it, became a major concern to the residents of Swords and Donabate, due to regular leaks and outages. This month, the County Council and members of Swords Tidy Towns decided to come together to pay a fitting tribute to the late Des Becton, former Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns. It was decided to plant a commemorative tree in Swords Park, as a tribute to all the fantastic efforts that Des put into the town. After months of fundraising and hard work, the Swords Needs Playgrounds group were delighted to see Swords Manor playground (the first of two new playgrounds in Swords), open to the public. The whole greening of the airport lasted for a total of 10 days, and was admired by all. March began on a cheerful note, as 10-year-old Matthew Walsh from Balbriggan, had a birthday to remember, when he was invited to celebrate his special day at Swords Fire Station. Matthew has a very rare genetic disorder, causing severe developmental delay and epilepsy. His mother, Avril said he had a keen interest in fire trucks, so the visit made his day. “He was delighted to have a ride on the truck, to spray water from the hose and he loved the special attention he got with the cake and wonderful presents,” said Avril. There was some good news for Skerries as work began on the town’s much anticipated Floraville Garden, situated on Strand Street in Skerries. Balbriggan also had much reason to celebrate, as the Public Realm Railway Street group in Balbriggan, as well as the Balbriggan Town Council, were rewarded for all their efforts in revamping the popular Railway Street. They were also given a special project award for all their hard work. The judging panel commended

APRIL A review was carried out by the HSE and Dublin City Council in April, in regard to the ambulance service in the Dublin area, which was feared would have a profound effect on the service in the North County. Dublin Fire Brigade and the HSE provide ambulance service for the North County from their bases in Swords, and the fear was that control of Dublin’s ambulance service was set to move from Dublin Fire Brigade to the HSE. MAY
County Manager, Paul Reid is pictured making a presentation to Cathaoirleach of Balbriggan Town Council, Peadar O'Kelly, on the occasion of the Town Council's last ever meeting.
2014
May was an eventful and exciting month, as anticipation mounted ahead of the local elections. The month however, started with a very poignant moment for the people of Balbriggan, as after serving the community for 153 years, the Balbriggan Town Council met for the very last time. The decision was made to abolish all town councils across the country, which sounded the death knell for Balbriggan’s own town council. It was an emotional day, as the
community gathered to mark the end of a historical era for the town. As we neared the elections, a number of local politicians made the headlines, as they argued over Swords Main Street. Two Swords councillors, Darragh Butler (FF) and Anne Devitt (NP), hit back at Fianna Fail election candidate for Swords, John Hennessy, after he criticised county councillors for their perceived lack of action in having Swords Main Street and the Castle renovated. Long standing councillors, Butler and Devitt, blasted Hennessy’s comments, accusing him of knowing little or nothing about the efforts put into transforming this end of Swords over the last number of years. “It would be preferable if he would use his energy to work with Swords Tidy Towns, and propose solutions, instead of venting and fuming and taking cheap shots,” a furious
29.12.2014 Devitt said. In Donabate, residents were delighted to finally see the official opening of the public library, at the Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre. The library had been on the cards for months, and the residents were thrilled to have their very own facility. The local library now provides the full range of services, from a collection of lending material including books, CDs, DVDs, Prints and gaming, to programmes of events for adults and children, free WiFi and substantial IT resources to the 9000 strong community in the region. The local Donabate Community College were also rewarded for their hard work, as they were announced as this year’s winner of the “Best Project” award in the Giga Spiders category at the Eircom Junior Spider Awards. The school won for their entry, Odyssey Racing F1. Transition Year students from Loreto Balbriggan, were thrilled to be the senior winners of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) search for One Good Idea, with their project Teenage Flicks. competition to win the coveted prize, as almost 1,000 students from 68 schools submitted campaigns to the 2014 One Good Idea competition. The judges commended students Shauna Byrne, Rachel Brennan, Christine Farrally, and Regan Dunne for the imagination and passion they showed throughout the competition. Balbriggan residents were also celebrating, as the turning of the first sod on the site of the new All Weather Pitch in Bremore Park, Balbriggan took place in May. All local clubs, as well as schools were welcomed to avail of the state of the art all weather pitch. At the end of the month, the political event of the year took place as 40 new councillors (an increase of 15), were elected to Fingal County Council. The vote count took place in
Citywest Convention Centre, and the excitement and emotions were high, as one tightly contested vote for the Swords Ward resulted in the count being suspended. After the recount which took place in Swords, Labour councillor Duncan Smith
emerged triumphant, as he took the hotly contested final seat. There were some new faces elected, but also some high profile casualties as stalwarts such as Gerry McGuire, Tom Kelleher and Tom O’Leary, all lost their seats.

The North County year that was...
JUNE The summer season finally hit the North County, and we were blessed with a bout of glorious weather, which lifted everyone’s spirits. The month started out with a young man from Swords being rewarded for his achievements. Thomas McDonagh (22) from Castlegrange in Swords, was the winner of one of the Outstanding Young Person of the Year awards, in the category for ‘Voluntary and Humanity.’ He also won the overall award. Thomas, who has devoted over seven years of his life to voluntary work, supporting disadvantaged young people in his community, through voluntary youth service, said it was a “great honour” to receive the award. June also saw us, and almost everyone else around the North County, take little Molly McNally from Balbriggan into our hearts. Brave little Molly,

absolutely incredible in their generosity,” he said. Funds are continuing to be raised in the hope that, when treatment is finished here, Molly will be able to go to the United States for further treatment. Then we had a major boost in terms of local tourism, as four of our North County beaches regained their blue flag status. Skerries South Beach, Portrane Beach, Balcarrick Beach in Donabate and Portmarnock Beach all regained their flags. In addition, these four beaches also received the Green Cost Award, which was further acknowledgement of their
natural beauty, clean environment and water quality. This good news came just in time, as the good weather arrived, and our beaches were packed to the brim with tourists and visitors alike, all eager to enjoy the sunshine. The topical issue of the water charges came home to roost for North County residents, as protest groups came out in force to protest against them. Such was the level of discontent over the charges, that the Government was eventually forced to row back on their original price structure. Lusk then came out to protest entirely different subject, as a group of determined Lusk residents and local councillors, angrily spoke against the plan to develop an Anaerobic Digester Waste Treatment facility in Regeens, Lusk. Their protesting paid off, as weeks later the plan was abandoned. The month ended on a high note, when we featured a story on brave little Jack McGuinness Daly, who had a heart transplant in London in April 2008. The County Leader covered little Jack’s story on a weekly basis back then, which captured the hearts of people from the North County. The good news is that Jack, or baby Jack, as he was known back then, is now more like Jack the Lad, as he is a fine strapping eight year old. He plays for Rivermeade FC under 9s, where he is their goalkeeper. He also plays gaelic football for St Margaret’s. His footballing skills came as no surprise
to us, as his uncle is current Dublin GAA star, and All-Ireland winner, Darren Daly, from Rolestown. His mother, Stephanie got in touch to

In July, the County Council revealed that they were in the process of commissioning an Architectural Masterplan for lands adjoining Swords Castle in the centre of Swords. According to the plans, the Swords Castle focused Masterplan “should respect the longterm strategic objectives of the Council, as they relate to Swords”, but will also be required to “seek out a new direction for this part of Swords, and to facilitate the delivery of a new social and cultural destination centred around Swords Castle, linking back to the retail heart of the town.”

The restoration of, arguably the most historically important building is Swords, became an urgent priority in August. St Columba’s Church, which dominates the skyline over Swords, had been closed to worshippers for the past year, after a large portion of the ceiling caved in. The site where the church is situated, is on a hill overlooking the town of Swords, and has been a
place of Christian worship for over 14 centuries. The church itself, was built in 1817, and is one of the most recognisable buildings in the area. August also saw the North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force moving it’s office to the Town Centre Mall in Swords. It now provides an essential new service for people and families in the local area, devastated by drug and alcohol abuse. This is a free, walk-in service and referrals can be made through your GP,

September brought the great news that the District Court service was being retained in the North County, with Swords and Balbriggan courthouses remaining open. The decision also means that the District Court Office in Swords will also be retained. Earlier this year, there had been a very real possibility that court cases would have been heard in the city centre, or in Blanchardstown, depending on the case. The good news continued, with the announcement that, after a robust debate at a Council meeting, councillors voted to cut the Local Property Tax (LPT) by 15 per cent next year. The 15
per cent was the maximum reduction allowed. There was widespread sadness in the locality, with the announcement of the death of popular Naul man, Donal Killian, who

passed away in September. Donal, who was proprietor of the well known Killian’s pub in Naul, died at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, after a long illness. Local Fianna Fáil senator, Darragh O’Brien described as “utterly disgraceful” the lack of any early intervention team in North County Dublin, to provide key assessments and supports for children with special needs and

disabilities. He said that “thousands of children are languishing on waiting lists, while many more can’t even get on a list for an assessment of the supports they require for disabilities, or special educational needs. Meanwhile, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly, showed that he is a really good sport, when he accepted the dreaded Ice Bucket challenge in Swords. Dr Reilly challenged two local charities as beneficiaries, namely Snowflakes and Remember Us. Both Robert Brown of Snowflakes and Nora Roban of Remember Us, joined the Minister in getting soaked. The remarkable sequence of success enjoyed by North County towns and villages, continued yet again in the national Tidy Towns competition. All our Tidy Towns groups shone through, as each and every group managed to up the ante from last year and achieved a steady rise in their marks. Rolestown/Oldtown Historical Association buried a time capsule in the village of Rolestown. The association decided some months ago to plant a time capsule in the village, as a fitting way to mark Heritage Week. It was planted in Rolestown village, close to Killossory Old Cemetery. September ended with local girl, Amie Doyle from Lusk being chosen to represent Dublin in the Miss United Nation pageant in Jamaica. The Miss United Nation pageant is not a beauty based event and is for women, who have performed outstanding fundraising acts. For the event, Amie chose two charities, Console and the Molly McNally Miracle Trust.

First off, a huge sigh of relief was breathed by locals in Swords, as news emerged that the controversial Swiftway Rapid Bus route, which was originally planned to go across green open spaces in Swords, was changed. The earlier protests of the residents paid off, following intensive campaigning by locals, who made submissions and objected to the original route from the beginning. Regardless of the Swiftway route being dropped, residents and members of the public were still extremely vocal about the absolute need for a light rail system in the North County. In Balrothery, protests of another kind were taking place, after a fiery public meeting was held, to discuss the implications of plans to construct ten units of social housing on a site in Ringfort in the village. Next in Swords, we reported on a very touching story. Following the tragic passing of local man, David Fitzgerald, originally from Swords, his wife Joanne and their three children — Emma (6), Luke (3), and baby Mia (1), decided to do something to mark what would have been their daddy’s 35th birthday, so they put together Monday 29th December backpacks filled with helpful items to donate to children receiving Mary’s Meals in Africa. However, he did say that he believed that Chief Executive, John Tierney should be allowed to continue in his role. “I know John Tierney from his days as manager of Fingal County Council, where I served as a councillor. November started off with a real sense of hope and confidence, after County Council officials and councillors agreed their first annual budget for the year ahead. This new budget promises to be the start of exciting projects coming on stream by the local authority. The budget, which was the first one to be overseen by chief executive, Paul Reid, as well as many of the newly elected councillors, promised to be citizen focused. The shortage of social housing reached crisis point in the North County in November.

Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid and County Mayor, Mags Murray joined Minister for E n v i r o n m e n t , Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly TD at a half day Housing Seminar in the Carnegie Court Hotel Swords. Hosted by Chair of the County Council’s Housing SPC, Cllr Ken Farrell, under the theme “Meeting Housing Demand in Fingal”, the debate focused on a range of issues affecting the supply of homes for those who need them in the North County, now and in the future. A major row was brewing between residents of a Balbriggan housing estate and the developer. Residents of Castleland Park View claim the developer has left the area in an unsafe condition. They claimed to have been in regular contact with the developer, in an effort to have adequate signage put in place, where people can readily access the estate. The residents claimed that they are at
the end of their tether, trying to get a meaningful response from the developer, whose lack of action is stopping the local authority from taking the estate in charge. Residents secured the support of local Sinn Fein councillor, Malachy Quinn, to help them in their dealings with the developer. Also in November, Rush entrepreneur, Patrick Leddy’s company, Pulsate was selected to represent Ireland at the World Start-up Competition in Korea. The World Start-up competition was organised by Korea’s Dream Bank Foundation for young entrepreneurs, in conjunction with the Start-up Nations Summit. The ongoing pension controversy at Dublin Airport, which is impacting thousands of workers, both present and retired, was reported in November. The problem arose initially because of a hole in the pension fund of around € 700 million. As a result, the Irish Aviation Superannuation Scheme (IASS) has been severely underfunded, with the sponsoring companies, Aer Lingus and DAA reportedly contributing very little to the funding.

The North County year that was...
DECEMBER Christmas came upon us quicker than we’ve ever remembered in previous years, and the North County was hit with a blast of truly cold weather, as towns around the locality embraced the festive season head on. The month started with some very good news for Dublin Airport, as they revealed that they had reached their 20 million passenger milestone. The local authority also had reason for celebration, as they marked their 20th anniversary. Former and serving councillors and retired managers of the County Council joined and looked forward together to another 20 years serving the North County. The County Council then put a plan for Swords Castle back on the agenda, as they held a one-day survey on plans for the development of Swords Castle and its environs, known as Swords Cultural Quarter. A local business in Balbriggan, the Balbriggan Enterprise and Training Centre (BEaT), was then targeted for high praise by the Council, who said that BEaT had exceeded their expectations. “The performance of BEaT in
Balbriggan over the past five years and since its inception fully meets and exceeds the Council’s expectations of an enterprise centre,” the Council said. The Council then launched a major business support initiative, that will provide €100,000 in grant funding for businesses across the county. With an allocation of €20,000 for each

weeks earlier. Senator Darragh O’Brien confirmed he was selected as the sole Fianna Fail candidate, to contest the next General Election in this constituency. O’Brien was chosen at the party’s selection convention, and Fianna Fail leader, Micheál Martin
dropped into our offices and spoke very frankly about issues affecting the North County, and said that he felt Darragh O’Brien was an excellent candidate. “He is a very good legislator and is intelligent and diligent, he will bring a strong Dublin voice to the table. He is destined to make an impact, not only locally, but at a national level,” he said. Martin said the party’s first priority was to “win one seat,” as they “ran too many candidates in 2011, and “paid the price

January 19th 2015. The news that German supermarket giant, Lidl resubmitted their planning application for a store at Pinnock Hill, Swords, was then roundly criticised by one Swords councillor. Joe Newman (Ind) spoke to us about his concerns, about the possibility of a supermarket being located in a built up residential area. “I was contacted by a number of residents of Carlton Court, Swords who have expressed their concerns over this new planning application. I want to emphasise that people need to put submissions in, if they disagree with the development of the supermarket,” he said. Focus On Fashion Love/Hate’s Susan Loughnane officially opened Focus Ireland’s first retail store recently as the charity seeks to raise vital funds through a new boutique fashion and gift shop in Dublin. The charity has opened the new outlet called “Beloved”ù a boutique in Malahide and the outlet specialises in quality fashion for women, childrenwear and gifts. Beloved stocks new and gently worn fashionable clothing which have been donated by designers, retailers and private donors. A native of Malahide, Susan Loughnane kindly donated one of her favourite dresses to the new Beloved store and called on others to do likewise. Pictured here are the Rush students with all the hampers they made up, ready to be given to the St. Vincent De Paul charity.
Rush Students Donate Hampers To Charity Since the new school term started last September, 2nd and 4th Year students in St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush have been very busy bag packing in the local community of Rush and Lusk, in aid of St. Vincent de Paul, an organisation that is a core part of communities throughout the North County. In total, the dedicated group of students aged between 13 and 16, raised the enormous amount of €7,000 for their efforts. With the help of
individual donations and the Lions club in Swords, this sum of €7,000 was turned into food worth over €10,500, which was delivered to St. Maur’s GAA Hall in early December. Decked out in Christmas jumpers and Santa hats, the 2nd and 4th Years transformed into little elves for the day, and turned the delivery of food into more than 250 fabulously packed Christmas Hampers that anyone would be delighted to receive. Accompanying
the hampers was €2,000 worth of meat vouchers. School Principal Patricia Hayden said, “Christmas is a difficult and extremely expensive time for many. Every year, the society of St. Vincent de Paul is faced with more and more pressure as it struggles to cope with the increased demand for their services and as a result of the dedication of this admirable bunch of students, more than 250 families in the local community will be in receipt of a Christmas food hamper. This group of young adults should be exceptionally proud of themselves for that reason.”
New Schools For North County Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), is pleased with confirmation that construction will begin on two new primary schools in Rush and Balbriggan in 2015. He told the County Leader, “I am pleased with the confirmation by the Department of Education and Skills that work will begin on the construction of Gaelscoil Ros Eo in Rush and Scoil Chormaic CNS in Balbriggan. In addi-
tion to this, St. Finian’s Community College in Swords and Lusk National School, are both to be extended in the New Year.” “The Department of Education and Skills has also confirmed that work will continue on the new schools for St. Oliver Plunkett’s in Malahide and St. Catherine’s National School in Rush, while the extension for Ardgillan Community College will also be
completed in 2015. “This level of investment in these schools will be great news for these local communities. With the youngest age demographic in the State, and such a fast-growing population, we must continue to increase capacity levels in schools throughout the constituency.” He continued, “While this is positive news, the capacity issue will almost certainly exacerbate in the
