Happy Memories Returned
And Old Friendships Renewed
Last week in the County Leader, we told readers of how a mysterious photo had been delivered to our offices here in Swords, and we are delighted to report that, after just a few days, the owner came forward to claim the picture, which is over 30 years old!
By Jennifer McShane The wonderful family photo was originally discovered by a couple in a photo frame (hidden behind another picture), which they had purchased in the St. Vincent de Paul charity shop in Swords. Malahide woman, Toni O’Sullivan (formerly Toni Kirby), who owns the picture (and is in it alongside her parents, two brothers and sister), was delighted
to get the photo back. Toni and her brother, Michael called into the County Leader to retrieve it, and to tell us a little bit more about it. “That picture is a family photograph that was taken in my sister Joan’s house around thirty years ago, during the summer,” she explained. The photo is of the Kirby family and pictured in it alongside Toni and Michael, are their late parents, Doreen and Michael Kirby Sr. sister, Joan and their late brother, Hilary. “It brought back plenty of happy memories, seeing us all together. Myself and Michael are living here, and my sister Joan is in Spain at the moment, but our parents and brother Hilary, sadly aren’t with us anymore, so it’s wonderful to have the picture of us all.” Both Toni and Michael were extremely touched that James and Claire Cooney (who located the picture originally) had the thought to hold on to the picture and drop in it to the County Leader. “It would be so easy for anyone to just throw the picture away without thinking,” Michael said. “So, we’re so thankful to them for going to the effort to ensure that it was given back, we hope this encourages other people who come across anything similar to do the same thing.” They both laughed as they recalled some Pictured are delighted brother and sister, Michael and Terri Kirby, as they display the family photo from over 30 years ago, which they rather unique details about the picture, collected at the offices of North County Leader. such as the Christmas Tree in the background, which was still up (and decorated in pink), of course assume that the picture was taken around all those months later! “We know why many would Christmas time, but it was actually taken around
June or July,” they said, laughing. Toni explained the reason for this: “My sister Joan bought the tree off a man named Michael in Malahide, and loved it so much, that she simply kept it up. Joan loves anything pink, which explains the choice of all the pink decorations. When we told Michael that the tree was still up and standing, he said it wasn’t too good for business to see his trees surviving that long!” Commenting on the disappearance of the picture, she said that she had not actually realised that she had misplaced it in the first place. “I figure that I must have mislaid it, when I was moving house.” She went on to say that an old friend of the family actually spotted the picture ahead of her, and Toni couldn’t believe how the dots had been joined together. “An old friend of ours, Monica Owens, was the one who contacted me about the picture, and believe it or not, it must be at least 40 years since we last saw each other, so I doubt she would have even recognised me, or any of my siblings. ” “We used to see her quite often as teenagers, as she was a very good friend of my parents, but she wouldn’t have seen any of us for years,” she continued. “I couldn’t believe that she managed to locate me after all that time, but when she rang me, she told me she recognised my parents instantly and after that, went about trying to find me. I was amazed she managed to, and that was another lovely thing to come as a result of the picture; Monica and I are now in touch again after all these years.”

that students will travel from Brazil to study with us. Our courses combine the best European theory with real-world practical applications of both journalism and event management. I’m looking forward to welcoming our new students,” said Ellen Gunning, Director of the Irish Academy of Public Relations. “The lead-up to the FIFA World Cup which will take place in Brazil this summer, and the forthcoming Olympic Games in 2016 has resulted in a heightened awareness and recognition of the need for more journalists and event managers throughout the country, so we’re hoping our course and their time in the North County and Ireland will help prepare them for this.” she said. The company also informed the County Leader that a large number of third-level students would be coming over (both male and female) to attend the course in the Malahide school, as well as to learn English, and that the company chose the local school because they had been working with them since 2007.

Government Hiding Truth About Water Charges - Butler Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) has criticised Minister Hogan and the Fine Gael / Labour Government for, what he claims is, ‘deliberately attempting to hide the true extend of proposed water charges, until after the Council and European Elections’. He told the County Leader, “This is a major issue that is coming up when I knock doors as

How are households expect to budget for the future when the true extend of the forthcoming charges are being hidden from them? Irish Water is being deliberately shrouded in secrecy and this is simply not acceptable,” he said. Butler continued, “So far, approximately €800 million of taxpayers’ money has been pumped into the establishment of Irish Water, the removal of assets from local authorities, the water metering process and the framework for charges. Not one cent has been spent on fixing leaks, upgrading older water systems or on improving water quality in the communities that are still suffering chronic water problems,” he concluded.

Rush Dramatic Society Presents Big Maggie To bring their 2013/2014 season to a close Rush Dramatic Society will stage a production of John B. Keane’s opening on Wednesday, the 23rd of April at 8.30pm. The play tells the story of a woman determined to create a better life for herself and her children after the death of her husband. Her vision of the future, however, is not one that sits comfortably with her offspring and on the journey, her actions come with dreadful consequences. This production is directed by the veteran director Seán Corcoran and has an all-star cast featuring some of the finest talents in the Company. The matriarchal role of Maggie is played by Anne Mc Crudden after a long absence from
the Millbank stage. Her family are skilfully portrayed by Stephanie O’Sullivan, Ciara Boyle, Peter Weldon, and Conor Molloy. The role of the smarmy travelling salesman is being performed by Donagh Humphries. Corcoran has veered toward the darker sides of the production reflecting a time when life was hard and love was harder. In what promises to be a performance of Power, Passion and Pride this production, the last in the current Patron’s Scheme also, is not to be missed. Bookings are already heavy and the opening night charity is in aid of The Caring for Caroline Medical Trust. Bookings can be made by contacting the theatre.

Boland Deplores Condition Of Rush Road The condition of the approach roads to St Maur’s GAA club in Rush, is causing concern to one of the local election candidates in the area. Independent candidate for the Balbriggan Electoral area, Cathal Boland spoke to the County Leader, expressing his fears that a tragic accident could well be the upshot of the deplorable condition of the roads, accessing the popular football club. He said, “The condition of the road in all directions

Currently there are no footpaths and the line of vision is extremely poor in places,” he said. Nessa Comes to North County By Cathal Boland Last week the independent candidate for the European election, Nessa Childers, toured the North County meeting voters in the Dublin constituency. Ms Childers, the daughter of the late President and former FF Minister, Erskine, was first elected as a Green Councillor in Wicklow before moving in 2008 on to the Labour Party. She won a seat in the European Parliament for them in the Ireland South constituency. In 2012 she resigned from the Labour Party and currently sits as an Independent. Now with the redrawing of the constituency boundaries, Childers has opted to contest the Dublin Constituency. On calling into the Offices of North County Leader she told us that, because of the amalgamation of her current constituency into the greater South constituency that she had no option but to move. She says she is anti-austerity and pro transparency. When asked how she will vote should she be elected in the contest for Commission president, she said that she was unsure as the election itself will create change, but that she would be voting for a social democrat when the time came. Indeed the position seems quite unclear. The agreed understanding was that the candidate of the party who secured the most votes, would be elected as President of the European Commission. The current forecast suggests that the seats in the parliament will be EPP 214, S+D

Joyous Partnership For Balbriggan School The staff and students of Balbriggan Community College were delighted to finally welcome the friends they have encountered through recent trips abroad, as a result of the Comenius partnership to their school. Three groups of exchange students came over from Germany, Finland and Italy to Balbriggan Community College to commermorate their taking part in this unique partnership with the school. The Balbriggan Community College Comenius experience stemmed from the school’s successful German cultural exchange with St. Wendel. German teacher Martine O’Brien, was loud in her praise of Balbriggan Town Council for their continued support and foresight in promoting Balbriggan in the wider European context. “This has been of great benefit to the students of the school,” she told the County Leader. A joyous opening ceremony to launch the final phase of the two year Comenius friendship was held in the school’s colourfully decorated John Bailey Hall recently. Many hands assisted in creating a happy, celebratory atmosphere. Flags, bunting, thatched cottages,
giant balloons, banners, welcome signs all played their part. In attendance were Balbriggan hosting students, students who had worked on the project in the last few years, including staff, friends of Balbriggan Community College, Cathaoirleach Peadar O’Kelly, Principal Emmet Sheridan and Deputy Principal Christine Dunne to name but a few. In addition to welcoming their guests from Finland, Italy and Germany, musical entertainment was provided by students and teachers. “The Comenius Partnership has been a most enjoyable learning experience,” Martine continued. “Since 2012, Balbriggan Community College has been involved in this EU led Comenius Inter-Schools Project. This allows groups of students and teachers to have direct experience of each other’s education system and culture, through inter-cultural exchanges,” she explained. “The project theme chosen by the schools involved was Humour comparing and contrasting the Humour enjoyed by our neighbours in St. Wendel, Eurajoki and Acquaviva delle Fonti with our own Irish humour.” “Forty two Balbriggan Community College students and teachers were involved in the three visits to our European neighbours in the last two years, and we want to say a special thanks to everyone who made this wonderful two year project a tremendous success,” she concluded.

Collins Calls For Conversion Of Disused Donabate Site Independent candidate for Swords Electoral Area in the upcoming local elections, Michael Collins is calling on the County Council to convert the disused site at the old Donabate Portrane Educate Together school, and make it available for community use. This site is located on the Beaverstown Road and is adjacent to the Donabate Community College and Donabate Portrane Educate Together. It is also beside the Donabate Portrane Leisure Centre and behind the Credit Union. Whilst an excellent children’s playground already exists at Newbridge House, it is somewhat distant from the centre of Donabate village. Collins told the County Leader, “This site, which is conveniently located close to Donabate village would be the perfect location for a stake park, or an area where football could be played on a hard surface. It is located beside the local Community College and behind the Credit Union. There are no houses in the immediate vicinity, meaning there would be no disruption to residents. Not every young person is a member of a club, and at present, the youth of the area have nowhere to play in safety. Instead, they are

Local resident, Antoinette Reilly was in full agreement with Collins, and fully supports his call to the local authority to have this unsightly and derelict site put to community use. “I have two children, and I am worried about the fact that they do not have Independent candidate for Swords somewhere safe to play Electoral Area, Michael Collins, is with their friends. Local Cleaner Communities Davis Calls For Support For More Awards Launched Acting County Mayor, Councillor Tom O’Leary, Garda Funding launched the 2014 Cleaner Communities Awards Local election candidate for the Balbriggan Ward, Richard Davis is calling on all fellow Labour and Fine Gael election candidates to push for extra funding, to aid the Gardai to fight crimes in the smaller towns Richard Davis and rural areas of the North County. “Over the past two months while out delivering my campaign literature, I have met a number of people who are too scared to leave their homes, due to the recent spell of burglaries and lack of Gardaí on duty around the locality,” he told the County Leader. “I have met a number of people who are to scared to leave their homes and have no faith in the current system which is supposed to protect them. The local Gardaí do everything they can to protect us, but with decreasing Garda numbers and an huge increase in population, it is physically impossible them to patrol the whole constituency,” Davis explained. “I’m calling on all Labour candidates and Fine Gael candidates to push the Defence Minister for extra funding to help the police fight the criminal gangs who are running riot in small towns and rural areas where their presence is, in some cases, non existent. Its extremely sad to meet elderly men and women who have worked all their lives and paid all their taxes to be left living in fear and feel like they are sitting ducks for burglars,” Davis concluded.
on Wednesday, 9th April last, at The Square in Lusk. The launch was was attended by members of the local Tidy Towns committee. This is the 39th year of the Awards scheme, which rewards residents, community groups and businesses for their efforts in maintaining a litter-free and wellpresented community or place of business. Lusk Tidy Towns were the 2013 Cleaner Communities Overall Winner, and they are very keen to hold on to their title this year. They have make a great effort on improvements to the town, as can be seen by how well the area is looking. Regular clean ups in estates is a great way to get neighbours to know each other, to foster a community spirit and to get people involved in their local area. As a society, we owe a great deal of gratitude to those people who encourage the rest of us to take pride in our surroundings. Edwina Dunford, Environmental Education Officer

The Wedding Invitations One of the first steps in setting the mood for a spring wedding, is sending out spring themed wedding invitations. Typically, wedding invitations with a spring influence have spring flowers or spring scenery on them. Many newlyweds are opting to send pocket invitations these days. There are a ton of different wedding invitations with beautiful flowers on them and the North County has an array of shops where you can pick the perfect invites. Alternatively, some couples might choose to get the less expensive, more affordable wedding invitations. This way, they can have more money to spend on the spring wedding decorations!
The Wedding Dress Part of the reason why spring weddings are so popular is because of the wonderful weather! Of course, this depends on where you live, but generally speaking, spring weather is very pleasant and fresh. Because the temperatures are typically not too hot and not too cold, there are a lot of options for the wedding dress. It is best to choose a more versatile
dress that can suit you in both warm and cold weather. (Maybe try to find a dress that is light but that can be paired with a wrap.) Spring weddings also allow room for adding an elegant touch of colour to the wedding dress. Today, many brides choose to have a sash or embroidery of a different colour on their dresses. There are certainly quite a few
unique and stylish spring colours to choose from. The North County has many of stunning dresses for you to choose from.

some bright and cheerful colours for your bridesmaid and/or guest outfits. One could come up with a unique colour pattern for both the bridesmaids and the groomsmen. Guests could also come up with creative, tasteful outfits perfect for that spring wedding.
Blooming Flowers You can save a lot of money on your wedding by purchasing in season flowers. In fact, you can save even more money if you can manage to work out a deal to use the church’s flowers (if getting married in a church). Typically churches have lots of flowers for special Sunday services such as Easter Sunday. Many shops here in the North County will give you a special deal on your floral arrangements and have a great and varied selection too.
Menu Ideas The icing on the cake for a spring themed wedding could be your menu. Try serving fresh young vegetables such as sugar snap peas, baby carrots, baby asparagus or potatoes. You could even serve fresh carrot cake, yummy! Fresh fruits would also be quite festive. Consider serving strawberries, mangoes, apricots or pomegranates. Get out there and have a unique, spring wedding using some of these ideas!

Wedding Vows Writing your own wedding vows is the kind of gesture that your lucky lady will really appreciate. The traditional speech is a classic one, but you should try to add some spice and creative vocabulary to personalise and fill it with meaning. This will make it that extra bit special. Try to really make it your own. Getting married is a huge step in the journey of any couple and it’s also a great event for any family to experience. Therefore enjoy the experience and take it all in your stride. Nothing runs smoothly, so allow room for some little mistakes to happen. Thinking everything will run perfectly and smoothly is a bit of a high risk, so when
only the minimal goes wrong it won’t be so bad and the day will
be remembered by all. Remember, you are only limited by your
imagination, so think of creative ways to make your wedding
special and different from the rest! Have a spring wedding!

description. When done well, this option can be very effective and can be of very low maintenance once in place. You don’t have to worry about crop circles from ornaments and a simple hosing and/or scrubbing with a yard brush is all that is needed to keep them clean.
Recycling Skips So now, the plans have been drawn, the paint has been bought, the kids are out and you’re armed with hammer and brush ready to go. But what to do with the broken floor tiles, the damaged furniture, odd cuts of wood, bricks and blocks of differing dimensions and the varying other objects of what not, which can’t be conveniently thrown on the fire and the bin men aren’t around until next week, even though your wheelie bin is overflowing already. The solution is the humble skip, being that skips are the most environmentally friendly and tidiest method of waste disposal for non hazardous materials. You call the hiring company, their truck drops the skip off, you fill it up, they pick the skip up, you wave your rubbish goodbye, it’s that simple. Did you know that over 70 per cent of items we throw
the empty skip, then remove the full skip to their depot to sort through the various bits and pieces to seek out and separate what can be re-born as a useable commodity. It’s something to bear in mind if you’re thinking of moving house or having a general sort through, why fill up your wheelie when you can go for the most productive option of a Recycling Skip.
Kitchen It’s easy to get prepared for the Spring in the kitchen. Most likely you’ll be inspired by longer days; cooking a bit lighter food and perhaps trying out some new recipes, so the fresh smell fulfilling the house will give a hint of new not only to your taste buds, but also to the whole house. Why not also get more into freshness by growing your own herbs? The light is indeed the biggest spring maker, so the best way to cheer up your kitchen for the warmer days to come is to let the light flow in. So, leave the dark, heavy curtains for winter and go for some thin, translucent fabric instead. When changing the curtains and blinds, think about all the spring colours and choose the lightest and brightest options. Browse around the local decoration shops here in the North
County to get some inspiration and don’t be too shy to try out something totally new, or trust the classic spring colours such as green, yellow and white.
Bathroom The same tricks can work wonders as well in the bathroom as in any other room of the house, so start off by trying to refresh with little things. So, get your towels updated and see if it’d be about time to get some new, different coloured ones. Find some matching storage boxes as that’s the one sure way to keep your bathroom clean. Organise the thick and heavy toiletries behind the shelves and replace the products with lighter ones. If there’s a little window in your bathroom, try changing to a new type of glass if you feel this is needed, or even just place some ornaments close to the window ledge.

Duffy Wants To See Swords Tourism Maximised Local candidate in the upcoming elections, Ken Duffy (GP), has said that he wants to see Swords and its tourism potential maximised, and he mentioned the walkway in Rivervalley that connects to Hollow Lane, as one of the areas he wants to see improved as quickly as possible. Swords is home to one of the most diverse river walks in the North County,” he said. “It has all the Ken Duffy ingredients for a wonderful nature walk experience, unfortunately, like Swords Castle, work needed to complete this walkway is likely to take place at a very slow pace.”
“The connect of the Ward Valley River walk to Hollow Lane could have happened sooner rather than later, had the old Royal Irish Constabulary site that is up for sale been purchased by the County Council. The development lands at the rear of the Old Vicarage have lain dormant for some time. As part of their planning permission, land running parallel to the river must be ceded to the Council for use in the upgrading of the river walk connect. The walkway at the back of the Castle Shopping Centre will also be included in a connect to the Town Park,” Duffy explained.
21
Duffy insists that, until all projects such as this are completed and restored in the town, Swords is at a disadvantage as it will continue to deteriorate: “As yet, there are no definites, no positives, no timelines, only the hope that in the not too distant future the walkway will be completed. Swords is like a jigsaw puzzle with some pieces missing, and until all the pieces are put together, the town centre will continue to deteriorate - and Swords deserves better,” he continued. Swords has the potential to create a booming tourist trade if it is packaged properly, and as of yet, I have seen little serious evidence of the Swords tourism mantle being taken up. If elected I would put a lot of my energy into selling Swords to a wider audience. Tourism creates jobs, jobs create peace of mind, so lets start selling Swords,” he concluded.
Donabate School Goes Al Fresco
Pictured at the official opening of the outdoor classroom at Donabate Portrane Educate Together National School are, Principal, Maeve Corish and artist Sonny Wieler, with pupils Aoife Gleeson, Jess Fullam, Ciara O'Sullivan and Diarmuid Burke.
An innovative new outdoor classroom was officially opened at Donabate Portrane Educate Together National School on Friday last, 11th April. The new classroom is an attempt to bring nature into the classroom and it has already attracted very favourable comments from teachers, parents and pupils alike. Kathy Brady, Outdoor Classroom committee member, spoke to the County Leader about how the project was conceived. She said, “Two years ago, Donabate Portrane Educate Together school put together a
tender commission for an outdoor classroom, under the Government’s initiative for Arts scheme, which allocates one per cent of the building cost for any public building, for an art installation. The school community decided to build something that would be enjoyed by the students and the school for many years. The brief was for a relaxed area with seating arrangement with work spaces to accommodate 32 students and to have disabled access.” “The central theme of the new classroom is very student centred and
accurately reflects the core values of the school and it’s mission statement.” she said. This is the coming together of a lot of hard work and there was great praise for artist and stone mason, Sonny Wieler who managed to create a very relaxed area, which is a real throw back to the past and the skills of stone masonry. Principal, Maeve Corish said, “We are absolutely delighted with the design, which brings nature into the classroom. It’s a structure that is permanent and will be here for further generations to enjoy,” she said.
Forest Road Needs Urgent Attention - O’Neill Independent local election candidate for Swords, Joe O’Neill has identified Forest Road in Swords as an area of great concern, in terms of safety for pedestrians. O’Neill is critical of the fact that Swords

roadway by large trucks and buses is a clear danger to pedestrians, particularly for people with prams and small children. The road and footpath are far too narrow, particularly between Oulart and Boru Court estates, and if a bus and truck have to pass each other here, then one of them has to infringe on the pathway, to let the other pass. If pedestrians are using the pathway at this point, then there is serious consequences for pedestrians. This is a road that is used by many local residents with children, walking

between the entrance to River Valley and the entrance to Rathingle, I believe that the bus route should be diverted through River Valley. Added to this, is the problem that occurs when the bus has to make the left hand turn from Forest Road, on to the main Boroimhe Road. It has to encroach out well beyond the white line, due to the sharpness of the turn at this point.
