Jack McGuirk from Swords, is pictured at Croke Park last Sunday, with Bernie Agnew, assistant camp director, and Dee Ahern, CEO of Barretstown, at the Leinster Senior Football Final, where Jack acted as mascot for the victorious Dublin team.
Last Sunday was a very special day in the life of young Swords boy, Jack McGuirk. The brave nine year old, who suffers from leukaemia, was chosen to be the mascot for the Dublin football team in their Leinster final clash with Meath. Jack, who lives in Carlton Court, is a pupil at St Colmcille’s Boys National School in Swords, was chosen by Barrettstown Castle to be Dublin’s mascot on the big day. Jack, who is seriously ill, is a regular attender at Crumlin Children’s Hospital, since he was diagnosed with the disease, three and a half years ago. His parents, Declan and Catherine are rightly very proud of Jack and his get up and go philosophy is a lesson for us all. Catherine told the County Leader, “Jack had a bone marrow operation three weeks ago and the news of the operation is encouraging, which gives us great hope. We have to monitor his bloods and look out for infection at all times. A local doctor, Tony Margiotta from Boroimhe Medical Centre has been absolutely marvellous to Jack. He is involved with the Make A Wish Foundation and organised for us to visit Clearwater in USA for six days, and then on to Kissimmee in Florida, to partake in the ‘Give the Kids the World’ project for a further eight days. We were only the second family from Dublin to be invited there and it did Jack a power of good. He was much improved upon his return and I’m sure that this is down to the kindness of Dr Margiotta,” said Catherine. She went on to

explain how Jack was chosen to be the mascot. “When Jack first attended Crumlin Hospital and was diagnosed, he was sent to Barrettstown. His doctor and consultant are involved with the Hole In The Wall project at Barrettstown, which is a magical place for healing. They then rang me last week to know if Jack would be the mascot for the Dublin team. Of course, he jumped at the chance and enjoyed every minute of it.” “He has met the Dublin players previously and they have been very good to him, through fundraising and sponsorships. “Dublin are my favourite team and I’ delighted they won. Everyone was really excited,” said a thrilled Jack. “Jack has previously met Ronan O’Gara and Katie Taylor, and they were really nice to him. Katie Taylor is lovely and she let him wear her Olympic Gold Medal, which was amazing and meant so much to Jack,” said Catherine. “Everyone has been really generous towards Jack.” Jack plays for local team River Valley Rangers football team and is the goalie. “I sometimes play in the defence, but I like being goalie. That’s why I love Stephen Cluxton, said the plucky youngster, who also lists Manchester City goalie, Joe Hart as another favourite of his. Jack certainly brought good luck to the Dublin team on Sunday and he described the atmosphere of the occasion. “We were treated really well. The Dublin players were all really nice to me,and I got to meet Stephen Cluxton and I think he’s brilliant,” said a delighted Jack.

The launch of the new Aer Lingus services comes at a time of significant growth in transatlantic traffic at Dublin Airport. Nifti Launches Beaumont Hospital Service By Patrick Finnegan North Fingal Rural Transport Initiative (Nifti) launched it’s new Beaumont Hospital bus service at Skerries Community Centre on Friday, 12th July last. The official launch was performed by Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly and was attended by many people from the local community. Last year, Nifti applied to the Department of Health Lottery Fund for a new
fully accessible bus to replenish their fleet. They were successful in obtaining funds for a new bus, specifically linked to the Beaumont Hospital service. The new service, which has been operational for the past while has been a resounding success. It provides Drogheda, Balbriggan and Swords with a bus connection to Beaumont Hospital. Eric Bentley, Nifti General Manager told the County Leader, “We are very grateful to Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly for the award from the 2012 Department of Health Lottery fund. With continuous funding cuts and increasing demand for our
services, this new bus directly allows us to continue to deliver vital services in the greater North County area. It is our intention to maximise the use of the bus in the rural area and therefore maximise the return on public funds,” he said. Minister Reilly was full of praise for the role that Nifti plays in the rural North County area. He said, “I’m delighted to support this initiative. We cannot work in isolation and I want to commend the fantastic community spirit that underpins this initiative. I will certainly support any funding requests that may arise in the future,” he said.

Sprightly Imelda Celebrates 80th Birthday By Eva Watson
By Jennifer McShane Following the recent announcement by the County Council that they would be slashing the opening hours of Rush and Balbriggan library, local schoolchildren and residents are keeping the pressure on the Council, determined to see that hours don’t get cut. Protesters are becoming a permanent fixture outside the Council offices, this being the third protest over the last number of weeks. A number of

school children in Rush and Balbriggan sent letters and e-mails to their local Councillors explaining how and when they use the library service and what it means to them, in an effort to request the reversal of these cuts to
library hours. Though the majority of Councillors voted against the cuts, and the Council said they were “encouraged” that some reduced hours could be restored in the school term, locals still fear that the cuts (which will
remain in place over the summer months) will continue indefinitely. A group of children and parents met on Monday, 8th July (the date of the final County meeting before the summer break up), and handed in their personal letters to the County Manager.
On Saturday, 6th July last, Imelda Macken celebrated her 80th birthday in the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords. Imelda, originally from Duleek in Co. Meath, along with her husband Paddy, aged 83 from Naul and their children attended the event. Imelda and Paddy have a wonderful family of nine children, 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with the fourth on the way. In the early years of their marriage, Imelda and Paddy lived at Seapoint in Balbriggan, where Paddy worked in his brother’s garage. The family later moved to Santry, as Paddy then worked with Aer Tours as an aircraft mechanic. Paddy and Imelda had an active involvement in their own community, where they organised Sales of Work and helped out in their local church where Paddy played the organ. Imelda and Paddy met at a dance when she was
just 16 years of age and she said she had ‘no interest in the beginning. She wanted to become a nurse and travel to India to tend to the sick, poverty stricken children of the slums. However those plans quickly changed, as she decided to marry Paddy and the couple are now married for 57 years. When asked how life has changed since her day, she responded, “It’s unrecognisable, It hasn’t changed for the worse nor the better. Advances in technology are terrific but the art of conversation is lost, people don’t communicate anymore, or write letters to each other.” Imelda has a high appreciation for the artistic things in life and mentioned her passion for painting and writing. Throughout her life, Imelda kept diaries detailing various experiences and memorable moments. When asked the secrets of a long and healthy life, Imelda replied, “Plenty of work, wholesome food and music.”

Local Children Aid Malahide Strictly Experience Public Realm Initiative Comes To Donabate Hundreds of schoolchildren have taken part in unique consultation process which allowed them the chance to create and shape their town. As part of the Malahide Public Realm initiative, which will provide an overall vision for the future development of the town, pupils from local schools were given the chance to get involved in the consultation process. Some 600 children aged between eight and 15 years of age took part, giving all children, irrespective of age or academic ability an equal voice, and is a multi-disciplinary and fully participatory public consultation process allowing the students to shape their town. As part of the celebrations, over 40 primary schoolchildren from Malahide National Schools were presented with certificates recently at the County Hall in Swords as a recognition of the extraordinary work submitted as part of this consultation and civic participation process. Six projects were presented directly by the children, highlighting some of the most well thought-out and creative ideas and representative of the ideas of the broader student population. Project architect Celine O’Rourke told the County Leader: “This is the first time that children have been given a real voice and input into the planning and development of their area – as we ensured that we gave them the skills, time, forum and format to input.” “For the kids this is the first time that they feel that they have been really listened to by adults (other than parents and teachers) and we have awoken the designer, innovator, engineer, planner and architect in our kids, and the process has also allowed us to see children’s contributions in a positive and beneficial light,” she concluded.
The “Strictly Come Dancing Experience” is on its way to the community of Donabate, where Donabate/Portrane Community Centre have teamed up with Portrane Hockey Club in what promises to be a night to remember. Fifteen couples are currently undergoing an intensive six weeks training programme and their style of dance was announced at the launch night in Keeling’s Pub in
Donabate recently. This event, which has been enjoyed by many people throughout the North County in recent times, is regarded as an excellent fundraiser, which captivated the local community. It is hoped that it will generate much needed funds for both the Community Centre and the Hockey club. The main event will take place on 26th July at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry and a large crowd from Donabate and Portrane are expected to attend. Tickets are priced at €20 and can be bought at the community centre.
Swords Group The hard working Swords Needs Playgrounds group, are as busy as ever, continuing to fundraise in the coming weeks in order to get the funds for two much needed playgrounds in the area. The cost per person is €10, and bar and refreshments available on the night. To date they have raised €10,000 which is fantastic. Group member
Marica Killi told the County Leader: “The amazing amount we’ve raised really shows what a community can do when they put their mind to it for a great project. We have also put in our application to Leader for the main part of the funding and hope to hear about this in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we have a few more fundraisers in the pipeline including: a night out with bands and a BBQ on August 24th with a raffle, and also hoping to hold a fun Aqua swim for families on another date.” “If any local business can help my making a donation or offering spot prizes we would love to hear from them, so please contact 087 689 2902,” she concluded.
Community Festival In Malahide The Malahide Chamber of Commerce and other local groups have been hard at work preparing for the 2013 Malahide Community Festival, which will take place from the 26th to the 28th July. The festival will feature family oriented activities on The Green and various entertainment on New Street, and throughout the Village. Malahide has had a string of successful summer festivals over the years, and this one is sure to be no different with a host of exciting, fun-filled activities on throughout the two days. The Alan Leetch Memorial Fund was formed by a group of Alan’s close friends and family in the wake of his death in 2012, with the aim of raising much needed funds for local and national charities which work to prevent suicide and create awareness of this growing problem in Ireland. Coinciding with National Suicide Awareness week, the committee will host a community family fun day followed by a fundraising evening consisting of a raffle, auction and race night.

Balbriggan Eyesore Must Be Maintained The failure to maintain the steep grass bank between the railway line and the beach in Balbriggan, has come in for sharp criticism at a recent monthly town council meeting. Local councillors hit out at the County Council for lack of regular cutting on the bank, stating that it was no longer acceptable that such an attraction was becoming blighted with rodents. All About The Kids Trina Gilchriest is chairperson of the North Dublin Chernobyl Children International group and has been working with the group for for the past four years. In this time, she says her work with the group has become an intricate part of her life that she would find very hard to give up. Trina sat down with the County Leader to talk about her involvement with the group, a little about herself, and why she loves being a part of community life. “I just got involved like anyone else would really,” she said. “I had always been very much aware of Chernobyl and how they were still feeling the effects of the radiation today, and wanted to do my bit to help, so I got involved, and I’m still here four years later. Seeing the difference that all the efforts make is really life changing. It had a profound affect on me once I was involved the very first year, and I just wanted to keep making that little bit of difference to the children’s lives. ” North Dublin Chernobyl Children International are an outreach group, associated with Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children, and it was set up in 2009 as a rest and recuperation group for children affected by the Chernobyl Disaster, which took place on the 26th April 1986. “The very first rest and recuperation group was set up in 1991 and our North Dublin group first came over in 2009, so children come from the three major areas affected by the disaster: Belarus, Russia and Northern Ukraine to stay with host families from all around the North County for a month in either July or August every year,” Trina explains. “We also try and get a few children over at Christmas time as well. So my role in the group means that, as well as hosting children each year, I also work with the other members and local community to fundraise to get as much funds together as possible for when the children arrive over. All the funds go on taking the kids out on day trips, ensuring they get lots of fresh fruit and food and so on, getting them some clothes and taking them to the doctors for check ups and Rollers all that, so we start fundraising right at the start Verticals of the year up to the very end to try and get everything organised.” Venetians Trina, who lives in Oldtown, says that none of this Roman would beBlinds possible without all the incredible support thatSlat the group receives from all the Wood communities around the North County. “Everyone Wood Shutters has given us so much amazing support that it’s overwhelming. VeluxIrish people have the biggest hearts in the world, there’s no doubt about it. Every year, despite the hard times people have gone through, they have just been indescribably generous, it’s difficult to explain how thankful we are.” The first group of 16 children for this year, arrived very recently and are currently staying with their local host families and enjoying plenty of fun and
games, fresh air and beautiful weather. “We brought 16 children over just a couple of weeks ago and they’re having the time of their lives so far,” Trina says, smiling. “Once you see the children’s faces light up, it makes everything worth it. They get such joy out of the simplest things, and we do feel thrilled to be involved in that. It’s also amazing to watch their health improve over the course of the four weeks. They might be quite pale and so on when they arrive, but after a month in the fresh air and taking in fruit, water and healthy food, the difference is incredible and we’ve been told that there is a 30 to 50 per cent reduction in their radiation levels after their time here. It’s fantastic to see what can be achieved by a team effort, because that’s what it is. So much is down to the host families and all the time, care and love they give the children, integrating them into their family and making them feel so comfortable.” Trina says that her work and involvement with the group has become a part of her life that she just couldn’t imagine being without it. “The children that come to me every year are a part of the family now (and their host families here are like second homes to them), and after bringing so much to their lives (and they to ours), I just couldn’t imagine walking away,” she continued. She says going over to the children’s orphanage in Belarus in particular, really gave her a first hand insight into the difference that the entire local community makes to the children so affected by the radiation levels. “A group of us go over every year with Adi to make sure the children are getting as much care as they possibly can, and that really does put things into perspective for all of us. It makes it all the more moving when the children arrive and are so happy in their surroundings. It’s truly wonderful to be a part of.” She encourages anyone who would like to contribute to the cause to get in touch. “No matter what you want to contribute, big or small, we’re always so grateful for the support.” In the little spare time she has, Trina enjoys the simple things in life, and spending time with her family, who she says have been a wonderful support to her. “I enjoy things like spending time with friends and family, and socialising and things like that, but most of the time, I’m happy to be involved with Chernobyl, I just love working with everyone and bringing some joy to the children. My family and friends have been amazing as well, and without them and the support and generosity of the communities around the North County, none of this would be possible, so I just want to say a massive thank you to them,” she concluded. If you want to get involved with the North Dublin Chernobyl Children International group, you can contact Trina on 0879969864.

workers. It consists of 27 tenants in very attractive retail units, with a 24 hour drive through McDonald’s restaurant. The fact that there are 952 free customer car parking spaces is very appealing and is certain to have been a factor in the success of the shopping centre. Parking here is a pleasure. Imagine not having to run out to feed a parking machine in the middle of shopping.
Security Manager, Johnny Treacy
This has been a great success in attracting shoppers here. Millfield now boasts one of the best retail choice venues anywhere in the North County including the largest Tesco in Dublin. Anybody who has been to Millfield Shopping Centre for the first time, will be impressed by the spaciousness and natural light that pours into the centre, which is located on two different floors. One gets the immediate
feeling of being able to shop in comfort, whilst having some of the finest shops, selling a diversity of products at your fingertips. The smell of baking and freshly brewed coffee just adds to the atmosphere of the place. Balbriggan is the fastest growing town in the
country and, up to the opening of Millfield Shopping Centre, there was no such facility for local shoppers to access such variety, choice and great value for money. Many of the shops here have regular promotions, where further great value can be had on a range of products.

Councillor Wants Free WiFi In Malahide Free public WiFi, even on a restricted basis, should be made available in Malahide to assist tourists and visitors to the town, according to a local councillor. Anthony Lavin (FG), said he would be in favour of allowing tourists who arrive at the railway station, being able to access WiFi. He told the County Leader: “We are trying to get tourists in to the town, so the introduction of free public WiFi, even If there has to be restrictions on it, would be very beneficial to the thriving area.”
A Council official responded to Lavin’s question at a recent area committee meeting, and said that the local authority had to take into account the number of local businesses that provide WiFi services to their customers already, but said that they would consider all options so that they might move forward with the motion. The local authority referred to a new initiative in Dublin city where WiFi had been provided, with the public restricted to getting half a megabyte free, and said that they would be “examining the best way to move forward.” Lavin welcomed the fact that the Council were considering it and would enquire about an update in the coming weeks.

He said that he particularly welcomes the grants for safety equipment, locator beacons and Hi Tech radio and auto pilot alars. Skerries based councillor O’Leary, said the scheme would be of
great benefit to Skerries in particular. He told the County Leader: “In Skerries we have had our share of tragedies with a long list of persons lost at sea. This will be marked officially in September this year, when the Reinstatement of the Totem Pole ‘Sea Pole’ at Red Island, and will commemorate many Skerries people lost at sea.” As reported in last week’s edition of the County Leader, over 200 names will be listed on plaques
when this lookout pole is restored at Red Island. “The Skerries community have come out in their thousands to support the local lost at sea project and Council officials will come on aboard now to supply the balance of funding to complete the project and complete the engineering works at Red Island to erect the sea pole,” he continued. “We have had too many friends in Skerries lost at sea (and indeed around Ireland), and I hope that this Government plan will dramatically reduce the risk of such terrible tragedies happening in the future.”

Following on from our recent story that local man, Kevin Curran from Balbriggan has just launched his first novel ‘‘Beatsploitation,’ the County Leader has learned that Kevin’s book has now been selected as the TV3 ‘Ireland AM’ / Bord Gais Energy Book Club book of the month for July. This means they will review/ discuss and interview the author about the book on their Tuesday slot on TV3’s ‘Ireland AM’ for the entire month. ‘Beatsploitation’ is a bitingly relevant and provocative examination of suburban Dublin life, exposing themes such as state-sanctioned racism, economic failure and skewered education systems. Kevin grew up in Balbriggan and currently lives in Skerries with his wife and son. He has a Masters Degree in Anglo-Irish Literature from University College Dublin. ‘Beatsploitation’ is his first novel and it was selected as one of the 20 winners of the Irish Writers’ Centre Novel Fair competition. It was inspired by Kevin’s own involvement as a teacher in the fight against the deportation of one of his students, Bola Adeniran, who was originally from Nigeria. Bola had been living in Balbriggan for six years with his family, and was regarded as a star student. Bola was due to sit his Leaving Certificate just before his family were refused asylum. His father was immediately deported while the rest of the family went on the run.

North County Receives ‘Next Generation’ Broadband Investment Towns in the North County will receive further investment in telecommunications infrastructure between now and 2015, as part of a national roll out of next generation broadband services, according to local TD, Alan Farrell (FG). Farrell has welcomed this timely announcement on foot of the recent launch of Government’s National Digital Strategy, aimed at a country wide adoption of digital engagement and building hardware that will focus on meeting modern day demand. ‘Eircom’s ‘Network for a Nation’ programme is a five year, €1.5 billion investment in telecommunications infrastructure, being invested
to deliver dedicated Next Generation Access fibre powered broadband to 1.2 million businesses and homes, both locally and nationwide by June 2015. “This service is being introduced on a phased basis in the North County,” Farrell explained. “Swords and Donabate were one of the first towns to receive this service in May of this year, followed Balbriggan in July. By June 2015, it will be introduced in Malahide, Portmarnock and at Dublin Airport.” “I commend Eircom for its vision for the future of communication technology and welcome its phased investment in the North County,” he continued. “The combination of investment in broadband infrastructure, as well as Government’s Digital strategy will continue our success in the digital sphere, boosting local and national economic growth and encouraging further e-commerce success and investment.”

Swords Youths Take Part In Activity Camp A group of teenagers from the Swords Youth Service took part in an outdoor activities camp in Wexford recently. The annual event was hosted by the SAFE project in Rosslare, and twelve Garda Youth Diversion Projects were selected to attend. Members from the J.E.T.S project (Justice Education Training Swords) were selected to travel to the sunny south east, where physical activity and lots of fun were on the menu. After getting stuck into outdoor adventure sports, beach races and sea swims, the groups relaxed each evening with a barbecue by a bonfire and on the final night they were treated to a spectacular firework
display. Although the idea behind the camp is for all to have a great time in a safe environment and to build bonds and meet new friends, there was a competitive element too. The coveted prize for the number one group at the gathering was won by Bonnybrook’s Sphere 17 Project, and the J.E.T.S group came in a very credible third place. The groups were marked on teamwork, behaviour, courtesy and their success in tasks over the two days. All who took part considered the event a huge success. Swords youth workers, Shona Whelan and Aisling Farrelly have expressed their sincere appreciation to the hard work and efforts shown by our Community Gardai, Pamela and Tom and the dedication they have shown to building links and relationships with young people in the community.

Recycling Skips So now, the plans
have been drawn, the paint has been bought, the kids are out and you’re armed with hammer and brush ready to go. But what to do with the broken floor tiles, the damaged furniture, odd cuts of wood, bricks and blocks of differing
dimensions and the varying other objects which can’t be conveniently thrown on the fire and the bin men aren’t around until next week, even though your wheelie bin is overflowing already. The solution is the humble skip, being
that skips are the most environmentally friendly and tidiest method of waste disposal for non hazardous materials. Skip hire companies will deliver the empty skip, then remove the full skip to their depot to sort through the various bits and pieces to seek out and separate what can appear as a useable commodity. It’s something to bear in mind if you’re thinking of moving house or having a general clean up. Many companies will give you excellent value, but it’s worthwhile shopping around for the best bargains.

Problems relating to a financial issue or arrangement will surface early in the week, and you would be wise to let the matter simmer for a while longer before deciding what to do. Professional advice might be a good move.

Don’t waste time on complex business plans, when the chances are that they will be overtaken by events shortly. Better to concentrate your energy on something less demanding but more immediately rewarding.
Gemini
May 21 - Jun 20
A business associate or loved one could suggest that you are failing to live up to their own high standards this week. It is more likely to be their unrealistic expectations which are to blame.

Given that certain people are relying on you to provide material, emotional or moral support, and that this is the perfect moment to provide it, do so now and you will feel better about having fun later.

You will be tempted to share a secret with someone you believe you can trust. Whether the confidence is your own or someone else’s is immaterial: the fact is that once it is aired it is likely to become public knowledge.

The European Recycling Programme (ERP) ‘Go Recycle and Win’ primary school battery recycling campaign has collected the equivalent of 176,000 AA batteries overall. The campaign aims to educate and encourage young recyclers to get into the habit of collecting used batteries and bringing them into school for recycling. The top two schools in the North County are Swords Educate Together National School and Oldtown National School, each collecting the highest number of batteries per student. The winning schools won a Sony digital reader. Speaking about the success of the campaign Martin Tobin, CEO, ERP, said, “The campaign, now in its third year, has achieved huge support from all the schools involved and has gone a long way towards educating a younger audience on the importance of recycling used batteries. One of the key objectives of ERP is to drive awareness and promote positive behavioural change and this campaign has shown students that batteries can be recycled and their resources put to better use.”

Notionz online was launched on the 14th June and even though its early days, they have had an amazing and positive response with shoppers from as far away as Australia. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA), is urging all drivers around the North County to be aware of summer driving hazards. During the summer months more tourists, caravans, agricultural vehicles and seasonal traffic bring new hazards to negotiate on the roads. The HSA has published information for local drivers on its website to remind them of key seasonal tips for safer work related journeys over the coming months. Deirdre Sinnott, Senior Inspector with the Health and Safety Authority told the County Leader that anyone who drives for work should be aware of new dangers: “Extra vigilance is needed for those who drive for work, especially during deliveries and collections, on rural roads and near popular tourist and sport destinations,” she said. “Reversing and manoeuvring feature in many reported incidents and members of public have been killed or injured by reversing vans and trucks. We would ask drivers to take note of our summer driving tips to the attention. Injury and fatality statistics show that over the last number of years almost half of deaths and injuries at work have involved vehicles,” she concluded.

Care Needed In Direct Sunshine With the brilliant summer weather here and, hopefully to stay for a while, there are a number of precautions that need to be taken in relation to the burning sun. Temperatures have been in the high 20s for the past two weeks, which can lead to sunburn and sunstroke. Dr Bernadette Carr, Medical Director, Vhi Healthcare told the County Leader, “We are calling on everyone to
keep a cool head when it comes to summer health risks. We have identified the top five summer health issues as being skin cancer, food poisoning, risk of heat stroke, eye problems and increased risk of drowning. We are asking everyone to be aware of these issues and take steps to protect themselves against them. It is important to protect your skin at all times. This means keeping covered up when it is sunny, wearing a hat to protect your face and neck and using sun screen, or a moisturiser or foundation containing a sun screen. As children’s skin is more sensitive to sun damage than adults it is very important to protect them from the harmful effects of the sun. Research does show that
Ryan Raises Debate On Lourdes Redress Scheme Local TD Brendan Ryan (Lab), recently raised a Dáil debate on behalf of the women excluded from the Lourdes Hospital Redress Scheme, based on age grounds. He told the County Leader: “Both myself, and my colleagues
have raised this matter through topical issues, parliamentary questions and on the Order of Business since the beginning of the life of this Government. We have all called for those 35 women excluded from the scheme to be compensated, and
I was delighted that this commitment was included in the Programme for Government to find a mechanism to provide redress for these women.” “Unfortunately progress has been laboriously slow, so I have called on the Minister for Health to deliver on his previous commitment to bring proposals to cabinet before the summer recess on this issue,” he concluded.

getting sunburn in childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.” “Children and adults should wear a hat with a wide brim that covers their face, neck and ears and wear wraparound sun glasses with UV protection. Use a sunscreen with SPF50 and UVA protection. For those who suffer from hayfever, the advice is to avoid freshly cut grass and grass-cutting and use nasal saline rinses, which washes pollen out of the nose. Common and effective treatments for hay fever include antihistamines, which are available as sprays, tablets and liquids and nasal steroid drops or sprays. Eye drops are also used,” she concluded.
Balbriggan To Mark Children’s Grief Awareness Day Every year in November, Children’s Grief Awareness Day is marked around the world. This is a day to recognise the particular challenges faced by children in dealing with loss and the great courage they demonstrate in coming to terms with grief. Children’s Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to let grieving children know that they aren’t forgotten in the midst of the sadness in a family or a community. If you would like to get involved in developing and planning an event in Balbriggan to celebrate this important day, please contact Mary at childrensgriefdaybalbriggan@gmail.com

Lack Of Lifeguards Almost Leads To Tragedy Continued from page 1
The local authority have played a leading role in attracting visitors to the North County for The Gathering, which they have promoted since the beginning of the year. Surely it is the logical thing to make sure that their safety is a priority, before we invite them to our area. Many people that this journalist spoke to were of the view this as a shocking oversight by the local authority. Worried residents of the North County are aghast as to why a busy beach, in the height of the holiday season, does not have a lifeguard on duty.
The North County is also an area, where traditionally, foreign students come to learn English. In times of good weather, they gather at beaches to have fun and play. They are used to beaches where there are blue flags and lifeguards, which they regard as normal practice. How can we put our own people and our visitors in such risk, while money seems to go a begging. On a happier front, Valerie confirmed that Daphne is making satisfactory progress in hospital, having been in intensive care, and it is expected that she will make a full recovery.

Take it dear Jesus and place it in your broken Heart where your father sees it and then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favours will be granted. Never known to fail. Thank you. (LB)
