Santa’s Elves Spotted! Christmas is looming ever closer, and that can mean only one thing: Santa will surely have his special elves out and about, making sure all the boys and girls here in the North County have been good this year, before he sets out on his sleigh on Christmas Eve. Our special contact from Lapland told us that the elves come to the North County to chat with their friends, the robins, who have also been keeping a close eye on the children all year round. After the elves finish chatting with their friends, they then go all around the North County to see just how good the little boys and girls have been, and of course they report all this back to Santa. In fact, here at the County Leader, we received a special phone call from the crew at Dublin Airport, saying that there had been some “mysterious sightings” there. Apparently, these tiny creatures have been jumping out of people’s suitcases! And, as well as that, they had left some “special items” behind them. Well, we were so intrigued by what we heard, that we simply had to send our reporter down to investigate further. Dublin Airport is truly a wonderful place to be at Christmas time; friends and family are reunited, everyone is filled with festive cheer, and there is a true sense of magic in the air. So, it’s really no surprise that the elves would arrive there from the frosty North Pole, before going to check on all the boys and girls. Our reporter, Patrick eagerly arrived at the airport, and he knew that if he had any chance of spotting these mystical, nimble creatures, he would have to head down to customs, where all the suitcases were kept. It was here a crew member swore he had seen a group of them with his very own eyes! According to our reporter, there was a real sense of wonderment in the air, so he could well believe that they had been there. When he asked for a description, he was told that they apparently were tiny and

that they wore green suits and pointy hats. And what was most wondrous, was that beneath their pointy hats, lurked a pair of pointy ears! Patrick was certain that these creatures were some of Santa’s special elves, but he wanted to try and spot them himself. Elves are not a common sight in the North County, so naturally, he was very excited to think some of them might be close by! At this very busy time of year, these elves are usually working hard in Santa’s Workshop, preparing all the beautiful toys for all the boys and girls here in the North County, but we know that, occasionally, Santa sends a group to keep an eye on the children and to check whether they are being naughty or nice. We know that all the boys and girls have been very good this year, and we will definitely be telling our contacts at the North Pole to pass this important message on to Santa. He looked amongst all the luggage, anxiously searching for any signs of these elves, because he knew they wouldn’t be staying around for long. After searching for a while with no luck, he was just about to give up and go home, when out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a tiny elf (who was perched on top of a big red case), disappearing in a magical puff of smoke. He looked on in awe, as the elf vanished from sight; it was truly a wondrous thing to behold. Then, what a surprise he got, when a letter and the smallest shoe he had ever seen, fluttered through the air and landed at his feet! And guess what? The letter contained a special message written especially for the children of the North County from Santa himself! Here’s what it said:

EXCLUSIVE “Ho Ho Ho! I just wanted to write a little message to all the wonderful children in the North County, before I set off on my trip around the world to deliver all the presents. Myself and all my talented elves have been preparing all year for the special night, and are busy putting the final touches to all the toys. My lists have been checked twice and I hope you are all going to continue to be on your best behaviour for your parents. All you have to do is go to bed early, and I would be so happy if something tasty was left out as the reindeers and I love treats! Merry Christmas!! Ho Ho Ho” .... Love Santa. Afterwards, our reporter knew that he had been extremely lucky to catch a glimpse of one of Santa’s special helpers. However, Patrick remained puzzled over the tiny shoe that had been left behind and decided that the little elf must have lost it, as he rushed off to check up on all the girls and boys around the North County, who we’re sure have been very good this year. Here in the County Leader, we were thrilled to be able pass on Santa’s message to all our readers in the North County and wish you all a very Happy Christmas. And remember children, Santa always has his eyes and ears open and will be watching all over Christmas, so be sure to be on your best behaviour, and be in bed nice and early on Christmas Eve!

Age Friendly Recognition For Skerries Skerries received its certificate of recognition, having completed

Fingal County Council, in association with the Ageing Well Network, selected Skerries as the town in which to pilot the Age Friendly Town process in the North County. Skerries was selected to address the aspiration of the Skerries Community D e v e l o p m e n t Association and the Skerries Tidy Towns, to make the town a better place in which to live, work and grow old. An Age Friendly Town is a town where the community understands and responds to the needs of older people.

It is created by consulting, building and implementing a plan with the community to make their town age friendly. It uses the methodologies of the Age Friendly County programme, focusing on the selected town, to significantly improve the quality of life of

older adults living in the area and to engage them in shaping and enhancing their own communities As part of the Age Friendly Town process, a number of actions were undertaken in the town including, walkability surveys, consultation days with older

adults and service providers and an audit of signage in the town. In addition, the Skerries Chamber of Commerce and Prosper Fingal Piercetown undertook to participate in the Business of Ageing programme, which is also being rolled out in the town.

Outrage Over Attack On Lusk Priest Residents of Lusk were shocked and abhorred By Patrick Finnegan @TheCountyLeader to hear about the attack on their popular Parish Priest, Fr Paul Hampson on Sunday night last, 15th December. The lone raider made away with a sum of money, and is being sought by gardai. Fr Hampson told the County Leader, “A knock came to my door at about 9.40pm on Sunday night and I went to answer it. Once I opened the door, I saw the man with a balaclava and he pushed me against the wall and put a screwdriver to my neck. He tied my hands with cable ties and then he asked me for money. I gave him some money and my wallet. He took my phone and locked me in a room at the back of the kitchen and he made off. I wasn’t injured and the only pain inflicted was from the cable ties around my wrists. We don’t keep any of the collection money here, so it was just my own

gift card, has launched a national media campaign, to bust some myths about gift cards this Christmas. The campaign is designed to take the ‘ouch’ out of buying a gift card by clarifying some key facts for consumers in the run up to Christmas. Commenting on the campaign, Michael Dawson, CEO of the Gift Voucher Shop said: “It’s absolutely vital that consumers get accurate information to help them make properly informed decisions on their gift purchases. The facts are that most gift cards are quickly spent and fully enjoyed by consumers. In the case of our own One4all gift card, there is no expiry date, the card is governed by the European Communities (Electronic Money) regulations 2011, and lost cards can be replaced easily by consumers.” One4all is also calling again for clarification from the National Consumer Agency (NCA) regarding recently published research findings. The research publication has been reported as stating that almost half of all gift cards are not spent by consumers. This is factually incorrect and should be clarified by the NCA under its remit to protect consumers and provide them with accurate information on their consumer rights.

Balbriggan Woman Wins Supreme Safety Award Gertie Shields from Balbriggan, founder of Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD), was recognised for decades of road safety campaigning, when she was presented with the Supreme Award at this year’s Road Safety Authority (RSA) ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards. The awards celebrate the outstanding efforts of individuals and groups who help promote road safety in their communities.

Early Morning Airport Bus Service From Millfield There is good news to report for Balbriggan residents, who wish to travel to Dublin Airport before 5.00am, for early morning flights over the festive season. The early morning Bus Eireann route 100X service now departs at 4.15am from Millfield Shopping Centre, with an arrival time at Dublin Airport at approximately 4.40am. This service is perfect for customers, relatives or friends, travelling from Balbriggan to Dublin Airport to catch an early flight over Christmas. The route 100X service is an excellent value for money alternative, so that customers can avoid petrol prices, car parking fees and the hassle of organising other means of transport. This service provides customers with a faster, more convenient way of travelling between Balbriggan and Dublin Airport, with a journey time of 25 minutes. This is in addition to the current comprehensive range of Balbriggan bus services available on the Route 100X and Route 101 services to Dublin Airport. Customers planning on travelling from Millfield Shopping Centre to Dublin Airport should note that fares start from as little as €5.50 for an adult single ticket or €10.50 for an adult return ticket. Customers travelling home from Dublin Airport should note that the 100X service operates 18 times daily, every hour, from 07:20am to 10.20pm, with the last bus at 00.20. Customers in Balbriggan will have better early connections travelling between Millfield Shopping Centre and Dublin Airport, by taking the hassle out of travelling early in the morning or late at night Tickets can be purchased tickets from the local Travel Centre, or from the bus driver on their chosen day of travel, or online.

people in need this Christmas, so they settled on a food drive, where they asked fellow students to bring food to school. They also organised a bag pack for four weekends at local supermarkets, where they raised a whopping €4,600 for their efforts. With the money they collected from the bag pack, they got in touch with Crosscare, which is a food bank, where they decided to buy food from them. They then negotiated a deal to get €10,000 worth of food for the money they raised ; quite a deal by any standards. The food was delivered to St Maur’s GAA Clubhouse on 11th December last, where the students proceeded to make 100 large hampers to stay in the local community, for the St Vincent de Paul. Each hamper will have a value of €120. Teacher, Ciaran Reid was full of praise for the spirit of generosity and the

positive attitude shown by the students. He said, “The students were

absolutely fantastic and are a credit to themselves and their families. They stayed here at St Maur’s GAA club until late in the evening and they will-

ingly gave of their own time to make sure that those less fortunate than themselves would be looked after this Christmas,” he said.

Dennehy said, “One of issues I have been working on locally is the need to have the roof of the local soccer club in Rush, which is owned by Fingal County Council, to be repaired and to have the club open for use. The closure of the Garda station in Rush is a major issue. I am particularly passionate about education and I want to see Rush national school, which has been granted planning permission, proceed to construction. We also need a new school building for St. Joseph’s Secondary School which is operating at maximum capacity.” Darrell Mooney said: “I am particularly interested in youth development and I want to ensure there is increased leisure and recreational facilities for the community in Balbriggan and surrounding areas. In comparison to other areas Balbriggan has been completely overlooked and this is simply not good enough and it must change.”

If the person is in rented accommodation and is interfering with your peaceful occupation of your home, you have the option of furnishing a complaint to the Private Residential Tenancies Board to deal with the dispute, which can be a speedy and cost efficient procedure. If this process is to be pursued, your complaint will actually be against the landlord for failing to enforce their tenant to comply with their obligations. If the offending noise polluter is a local authority tenant, you should furnish your complaint to the local authority, who are empowered to initiate legal proceedings to evict the tenant through legal proceedings if their behaviour is continuously interfering with your peaceful occupation of your home. Finally, if the person causing the noise pollution is a private home owner, you may pursue an action in the District Court. Once the case arrives in court, there will be certain proofs required to convince the court of the noise pollution being suffered by you at the hands of your neighbour and you should consult with your solicitor prior to proceeding with such an action.

The Christmas period is a time that we all let our hair down and probably drink more than we would at any other part of the year. It is at this time that we all need to realise that the Gardai are particularly aware of and on the alert for drink driving and public order offences. Rule number one is, don't drink and drive at all. The level required to be over the limit at this stage is minimal and therefore the best advice is not to drink and drive at all. People should remember that, traditionally, the Gardai must have a reason to stop and test the driver for example, erratic driving. However, the new legislation allows check points to be set up on certification of an inspector rank. This is what catches drink drivers over the Christmas period, as these check points are particularly prevalent. If you have not read this article before the Christmas period or did not heed the advice not to drink and drive, and you do get caught - it is a fact that drink driving matters are still difficult to prosecute, as the Garda has to hurdle a number of statutory procedures. Therefore, once a person is positively tested it is an area of law that you should seek clear legal advice before deciding how to deal with the prosecution. Be very careful of the next day driving! Checkpoints are notoriously set up in the mornings! Always give either a breath, urine or blood sample. By refusing to give a

sample now attracts a four year ban. The other area to be concerned about is public order matters. Especially for young people or immature drinkers. They can be subject to prosecution for "public order" matters. The most regular prosecutions are drunk where you are a danger to yourself or others and failing to follow the direction of the Gardai. Again, if you or a person you know are charged with this - do take legal advice as a conviction can currently stay with an individual for life. Sadly, however it is a fact of life burglaries are more prevalent over the Christmas period. Cynical and habitual burglars are aware that we have a habit of leaving our homes for periods of time and they take advantage. We can protect ourselves from this. If you are leaving the house for a full day or a couple of days, talk to your neighbour. Ask them to keep an eye out. Leave certain lights on so that the place looks active. Be vigilant for strange cars in the area. Often burglars will case an area before they attack. If you see a strange car, call it into the Gardai. The Gardai do react and check the vehicle out. Vigilance is the best way to protect our homes. Apart from all that, I wish everyone a happy, safe and enjoyable Christmas!

Local Charity Christmas Day Swims Hardy swimmers from two locations in the North County, are set to embark on bracing sea swims for charity on Christmas Day. The annual Christmas Day swim in Portmarnock takes place in aid of St Francis Hospice is looming and the organisers are calling on locals from around the North County to get involved. Over ten years ago, the Jesson family of Onward Walk, Portmarnock, were devastated when their dad, Billy died from a rare brain tumour.
