The proposed new Bus Rapid Transit system, Swiftway, which is claimed will reduce bus travel time from Swords to the city centre, has been exposed as nothing more than an elaborate waste of tax payers’ money. The County Leader carried out it’s own research into the travel times from Swords to the city centre, at different times of the day, using different bus services, with startling results. The proposed new service is claimed to reduce travel time from Swords to O'Connell Bridge by half, to just 35 minutes (not including the airport). On the face of it, this seems quite impressive, until we sent one of our journalists on a number of bus journeys, to and from the city centre, from Swords. We discovered that the longest time taken was 45 minutes. This survey was taken on Tuesday last, when our journalist travelled on the 41C bus, which left Swords at 1.35pm and reached it’s destination at Lower Abbey Street at 2.16pm, a total of 41 minuutes. It is worth noting that this bus travelled through River Valley estate, which the new Swiftway won't do. This added significant time to the journey, yet the difference is only six minutes. The journey back to Swords took 35 minutes, leaving the city at 2.55pm and reaching Swords at 3.30pm Our journalist travelled to the city centre on the Swords Express on the same day. This journey took 34 minutes, with the return journey taking a mere 24 minutes. Furthermore, our researcher surveyed the time taken from the airport to the city centre on DUBLIN BUS 41C (Via River Valley) TO CITY CENTRE

By Patrick Finnegan & Emily Nicholas Aircoach, and the time taken was an impressive 18 minutes, with the number 41 bus taking 13 minutes to reach the airport. A survey of passengers was also undertaken, with most people expressing their satisfaction with the service as it stands. The result of this survey can be seen on page 6 of this paper. To copperfasten our research, a further journey was also taken on Thursday last on the number 41. This bus left Swords Main Street at 9.19am and arrived in O'Connell Street at 10.04am, a journey time of 45 minutes. It is important to note that this bus went through the airport. These times make nonsense of the NTA figures. Many locals believe that the agenda here is to preserve Dublin Bus' stake in the Swords route, by introducing Swiftway, instead of a light rail system. Indeed, local senator, Darragh O'Brien pulled no punches, when he asserted that we, the people of Swords, had been 'sold a pup' in terms of this rail project going ahead, and that Swiftway is now a permanent replacement service for the promised rail system. From this, it is quite clear that the Swiftway service, which has already caused an uproar in parts of Swords, is a shameful waste of taxpayers’ money. It is

More Waste Of Your Money now abundantly evident that the cost of approximately €150 million represents very poor value for money. Bus travellers can now, as demonstrated, get from Swords to the city centre, on a variety of bus services, in around six minutes more than the proposed Swiftway service. The existing bus service does not take anything like the time the NTA claims, so why are we spending a whopping €150 million on a project that many regard as utterly unnecessary, and saves about six minutes per journey. The fact that roads are going to be dug up and commuters will be subjected to more demoralising roadworks, on their journey to the city, and all for just six minutes!. The cost benefit analysis of this project should make interesting reading. Locals to whom we have spoken say the entire project smacks of an elaborate sham and is clearly deigned to replace the light railway system, that has

been promised by local politicians for the last two decades. Obstacles have regularly been placed in the way of this vital piece of infrastructure going ahead. Every candidate in general elections over the past 20 years, has promised a light rail system for the North County. Many angry residents, who spoke to this newspaper, are adamant that the North County is regarded as the 'runt of the litter' as far as other areas of the city are concerned. They cite the fact that south Dublin already has a light rail service in the form of the Luas, as well as the DART service. Throw in the fact that an international airport is located in the heart of the North County, and the lack of a light rail system is seen as an absolute disgrace, that leaves a lasting impression on the many visitors, who must be aghast at their first impression of a city without a decent transport service.

The long awaited library was due to be open at the end of last year, but after going back and fourth with various time frames, it seems the spring date is now a definite. The local authority have assured all existing users of the community centre that their activities will continue to be accommodated in the building. Butler said the new library would be “fantastic for the residents of Donabate and Portrane.

the tournament run out over three nights in January. There was huge interest shown in this indoor five-a-side tournament, with teams competing from various youth services across the North County and beyond, including Swords. Both the senior and junior leagues took place on two consecutive Tuesdays in January in Holywell Community Centre. The overall finals were then staged in St. Colmcille’s GAA club in Swords. The youth service are thankful to have had the support of local Garda, John McCarthy who acted as referee for the tour-
nament. Garda Tom Murphy and volunteer, Chris Barker were also thanked for their help throughout the tournament. In total 14 teams competed with close to 85 young people participating over the course of the three nights, however they were no match for the ‘Liberties Lads’ who showed their skill and prowess all over the pitch. This tournament gave the young people an opportunity to get out and be active on the cold dark nights in January. Both youth workers are hoping to make this an annual event due to the positive feedback received from all the young people in attendance.

The Council have been talking for many years, since I was elected first, about opening up the Ward Valley Park, and having a walkway and cycle way, going all the way to Knocksedan. The site would also be an ideal location for an Interpretative Centre, where historical images of the area can be readily accessible to all. It could also house a car park, where people can go on walking tours and visit the town, boosting the local economy. This needs to be a community owned facility, which will leave something positive for future generations Let’s do something imaginative with this now,” he concluded.

Rush Man Awarded For Angling Success
By Jennifer McShane @TheCountyLeader
Rush man, Thomas Lynch had reason to celebrate last weekend, when he was awarded a certificate and silver pin from the Irish Specimen Fish Committee (ISFC) for his capture of no less than 10 specimen fish last year. The award was presented to him at the recent Irish Specimen Awards Day by the Minister of State for Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd and Dr Robert Rosell, chairman of Specimen Fish Committee. Thomas had a great year in angling terms, as catching 10 specimen-sized fish last year alone is an excellent achievement. According to the IFSC, many anglers can take many years to catch 10 specimens and some struggle to catch even one, so the local man has done very well indeed. Speaking to the County Leader, Thomas said he was very happy to have received the sliver pin and certificate: “A lot of work goes into catching Specimen Fish, so I
was delighted. There’s a lot of specifics that goes into that particular type of fish, so I was chuffed to get 10 of them.” “These Specimen Fish are fish above a threshold weight set by the ISFC which represent the bigger fish for that species,” he explained. “Anglers who catch a specimen fish must weigh it and measures its length before submitting it.” This seasoned angler, has been fishing since he was five years old, when his late father introduced him to the hobby. “It’s always been just a hobby of mine, but something that I really enjoy,” he continued. “I found it was something I could do that I was good at, which helped as well!” He explained that he was looking to catch 10 different species this year and was well on his way to hitting his target, as he has seven collected already.

Want To Be An EU Film Star? By Cathal Boland The European @TheCountyLeader Movement have introduced a 32 county initiative to engage with young people and encourage their participation in promoting the value of Europe to their generation. The initiative seeks people under twenty five from across the 32 counties to come together to create a high quality video which they hope will go viral. So do you want to have your say? Or have a story, concern or issue or a desire to influence the upcoming election. Then this might be your opportunity to become a star. The intention is to bring participants together for a day of training and filming at one of four
locations, these are Belfast, Galway, Cork and Dublin. During the day, participants will decide what the video should look like and receive basic training to prepare them for appearing before the camera. When the video is completed and professionally edited, screenings will be held at the four production cities. The invitees will, of course be the “Stars” their families and friends along with the European Election Candidates. After the screening a question and answers session will be held allowing the audience put their points to the candidates. So if you want a chance to be a STAR go to the website of the European Movement http://www.europeanmovement.ie before March 3rd. You can down load an application form and get full details. If you are selected to participate in the project let us know so that we can share your experience with our readers. The gig sounds like it might be fun, even if politics is not the light of your life.

Cheeky Swords Butchers Signage Urgently Needed For Corduff Make Dreams Come True
The hardworking butchers in JC’s in Swords saw the culmination of hard work and a rather daring calendar come to fruition on Friday last, as they presented a cheque to the Make A Wish Foundation for a staggering €20,000. The butchers decided to bare all for a unique charity calendar, in order to raise much needed funds for the charity and were on hand to present the cheque to the group. The calendar, called ‘Butchers in the Buff’ was launched late last year and 14 cheeky participants decided to show more beef than usual, all for a great cause. The Make a Wish Foundation Ireland grants the wishes of children aged between three and 17 years living with life-threatening medical conditions. All the funds raised will be put to good use thanks to the special efforts of the butchers and those who bought the calendar. The
concept was the brainchild of butcher, Brendan Collins, who told the County Leader that his wife Seppi suggested that they do something in the same vein as “Calendar Girls,” and so the idea was born. Managing Director of JC’s, Michael Savage told the County Leader they are delighted to have reached their target. “We just want to say thank you so much to all our generous customers for being so supportive. We were thrilled to reach our target, and so happy that we could help Make a Wish, which is a wonderful cause. Susan O’Dwyer, CEO of Make A Wish, who accepted the cheque said, “This is an incredible amount of money, generated from a very novel idea. It will make an enormous difference to our children, who are looking for a wish to be granted. We cannot thank everyone enough for their wonderful support,” she said.

want to come. It is co-ordinated by two local college students on behalf of Spleodar, an Irish language youth organisation. It runs 12 residential courses in the Connemara Gaeltacht every summer catering for over 1,500 students ranging in age from 10 to 18 years of age. As part of its large range of winter activities, the group organises youth clubs through Irish for past pupils which gives students a chance to practise and keep up their Irish as well as meet friends they have made on the courses. New Youth Facility Opens In Rush An exciting new youth facility has opened it’s doors in Rush. The brand new multipurpose youth facility, was formally Martin’s Shop, which has now been renovated to accommodate the youth in the town. Speaking to the County Leader, ViceChairperson of Rush Community Council Angela Byrne, said the project was a long time coming, and all involved were delighted to see the centre open to the young people. “It took about two years to get everything ready to go,” she said. “The Rush Community Council worked with the County Council on this, and we were handed the keys last week, which we were delighted about. She is keen to emphasise that the centre is open to any group (big or small), or any persons who wish to use it. “We are now open for business, so to speak and ready to go, so we want to encourage all youth groups in the area to come forward and use the facility.” She said the main aim behind this youthtailored facility was to give the young people in the town a base, where all the groups could come together. “I’d love to see other groups such as Jigsaw (a mental health resource for young people), based in Balbriggan, come to Rush even one evening a week, now that they would have a place to set up, as a group such as that
would be so beneficial for the young people,” she continued. The Community Council will also be working with Fingal Leader Partnership, and other local youth groups such as the Swords Youth Service will also be working
with the Community Council to that young people from both areas can come together. “We will be having an official launch day in the coming weeks, but for now, the youth facility is up and running and ready to go,” she concluded.

Just A Glorified QBC - Newman The public consultation process for the proposed new Bus Rapid Transit system, took place on Tuesday last, 17th February, at County Hall in Swords, and attracted much interest from local residents, who voiced their concerns about the new project. Controversy about the route to be taken by the new bus service in Swords, attracted many residents from Broadmeadows, Castlefarm and Pine Grove estates to the information day. Representatives from the National Transport Authority (NTA), were put to the pins of their collars by angry residents, who do not want to see the green spaces where their children play in safety, dug up to facilitate a bus corridor. Local election candidate for Swords, Joe Newman (NP), was present at County Hall, where he met with some angry residents from Broadmeadows, who vented their fury at the proposed route. Newman told the County Leader, ”While we badly need a better transport system, it seems to me to be just a glorified QBC. If this goes ahead, it looks like the end of Metro, if the NTA literature is anything to go by.
This whole project was suddenly sprung on the local community, without any prior consultation with residents,” he said. Broadmeadows resident, Philip Glynn said, “My main concern is about safety, with the amount of children going to school and playing on the green. Elderly people will no longer be able to get across the road, if this goes ahead.” Another resident, Emma Louise Glynn said, “The noise of 30 buses will have a huge impact, as well as joyriders. My daughter, Ruby (4), will no longer be able to play on the green,” she said. Tara Jane Barron said, “They spent millions on researching this, without consulting any residents, We will no longer be able to access the school by car. The Council promised that Pinewood Road would never be opened up, but they’re reneging on this,” she said. Pictured at the public consultation meeting for the new Swiftway Bus Rapid Transit system at County Hall, Swords on Tuesday last, are Philip Glynn, Kenneth Clarke, local election candidate, Joe Newman, Emma Louise Glynn, little Ruby Glynn Clarke and Tara Jane Barron.

With the rush of Valentine’s Day just gone, TV3 decided to mark the occasion and dedicate a special programme to couples with a difference. It seems quite a few students around the North County have a talent for public speaking, as three students from Fingal Community College in Swords were also awarded for their speaking talents at the same competition in Trinity College recently.

Malahide Artist Launches New Collection Local artist Jacinta Hughes Eydan from Malahide launched her first Art Exhibition in Malahide Library in January 2012, and she is back with a new collection of paintings entitled “I See You.” The exhibition will launch with wine and nibbles at 3.00 pm on Saturday, 1st March in the Malahide library and all are welcome to attend. The local artist got in touch with the County Leader to tell us a little more about her new collection of work: “The genre is Cubism, and I use acrylic and oil paint. I
love to experiment adding objects to give texture.” “I loved Art in school and about five years ago I decided to do an Evening Class (an Art Class in Ballyboughal) and in the class we were encouraged to paint however we see the image – it gives you licence to do whatever you want, and was good advice for me going forward into my own art work,” she continued. She has gone on to complete a Fetac Level 4 in Art in Killester College and received a Distinction in both Drawing and Painting, and she also teaches art classes herself. At the end of the day, I love experimenting with anything and everything to get the right picture, I simply love to paint.”

Fall In Love With Your Home After a long day at work, its important that entering your home makes you feel calm and relaxed. You want to feel solace and comfort upon returning home. So many homeowners allow the entrance to their homes to become overgrown and unkempt. You may not see it from inside your home, but it’s the very first thing you see upon arriving back, so always make your front exterior and garden a pleasant sight rather than an eyesore. A beautiful new front door will improve the look of your home’s exterior immediately. Getting rid and replacing your tatty, old front door will make coming home a dream rather than a nightmare. fixing a large mirror up in a smaller room. This will make the space appear larger and bounce around any light coming in. Keep all large furniture light and bright, making the space around it seem spacious. You can always add a splash of colour with cushions and throws if you choose to. A very busy room will seem smaller, so ensuring the tones and colour schemes are neutral can help make the space feel tidy and bigger. Pale walls will also make the walls seem further away. Remember, you can always add texture through accessories but steer clear of heavy curtains as they will create a cramped environment.
Bathrooms While the bathroom can be one of the most expensive rooms to improve, there are several quick changes you can make that will make an amazing difference. Something as simple as removing unnecessary items from your bathroom counter can make the room appear less overcrowded so get rid of the old deodorant can that’s been sitting around for months. Instead replace it with a decorative vase or a pretty soap dispenser. You can pick up any of these items at any of of the local home stores around the North County. Cracked tiles can also make the whole room seem scruffy so replace any that you have in your bathroom. This can be done extremely cheaply and could even be attempted yourself. However, patience is required so take your time and don’t rush the job.

can paint your door yourself, so start by removing it and laying it flat on to an area covered with a protective sheet. Next, lightly sand the entire door with fine grit sandpaper and apply your chosen paint colour using rollers, as they will minimise runs and stroke marks. Use a brush to reach all crevices and you’re done! Flowers are also a great way of improving the way you feel about coming home. Hanging baskets are very easy to maintain and are a perfect way to frame your freshly painted, new front door. It’s a good idea to gather recommendations from one of North County’s local stores on which plants will thrive in your area. Also, try planting flowers around your garden path. This will make walking along it an absolute treat and help you arrive to your front door with a spring in your step.

health. Although typical Orthodontic patients look forward to having a beautiful smile at the end of treatment, braces also have a significant positive impact on long-term good dental health. Malocclusion is the technical term used by dentists to describe crooked, spaced, crowded or protruding teeth that do not fit together properly. Malocclusions can be inherited or can be caused by things such as thumb-sucking, dental disease, early loss of baby teeth or accidents. While orthodontic treatment can improve smiles at any age, there may be an optimal time for individual patients to begin treatment, in order to achieve maximum improvement in the minimum amount of time. Early intervention can make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Dr Griffin continued, “With early treatment, we can often achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing. An early Orthodontic assessment can often ease parental concerns about crooked teeth or facial development ; however in general most treatments start from aged 10,” she said. “Many adults in Ireland were never presented with the opportunity to have straighter teeth, and more and more are starting treatment in their older years. We find that this sometimes causes some slight initial embarrassment, but with new ,more discreet techniques in teeth straightening and adult After braces becoming much more commonplace, patients are feeling less and less anxious about embarking on treatment.” Dr Griffin observes that people who have covered their teeth for many years during social interaction, felt liberated after a short course of Orthodontic treatment. At Balbriggan Braces, treatment can be conducted without compromising your lifestyle - your braces do not have to be visible! Recent innovations for adults include clear removable plastic aligners and ‘toothcoloured’ as well as white braces. When planning the new clinic, Dr Griffin was de te r m in e d to in c or p or a te the be st n e w dental technology into a state of the art practice. “This new technology includes digital xrays, which reduces the patients’ exposure to radiation by as much as 90 per cent and are immediate, so there is no time waiting for xray films to develop. All instruments are sterilised using the latest in vacuum sterilisation.

technology. These advances in technology are not yet a requirement of the dental council, but we have decided to be proactive to ensure our patients’ safety,” she said. Exciting Festivities Planned For Swords Swords is set to become a hive of activity starting next month, with a broad range of events scheduled starting with the annual, eagerly anticipated St. Patrick’s Day festival taking place in March. On April 25th, there will be will be a spectacular ‘Fire Parade’,

terms of an unforgettable golfing experience. These courses, some of which have hosted international tournaments, provide a stern test for the best professionals, but are also fair and can be enjoyed by the enthusiastic amateur. For many years, golf was not always as readily available to people as it is now. It had, for many years been the preserve of the rich and privileged in society. Happily, this is now a distant memory, where golf has assumed the mantle as one of the most sought after pastimes in the world. Golfing visitors to the North County have immediate access to our golf courses. The airport is minutes away from some of our finest courses, as well as the excellent road system that passes through, with the result that the North County is within easy reach of practically everyone along the east coast. Golf clubs in the region are now offering
fantastic value for money, with membership rates at their most competitive for many years. They also have very competitive green fees, with early bird and twilight specials available for non members. It makes sense to take advantage of these great rates, and also avail of the guidance of your local golf professional. Top class
professionals are available at each club to provide lessons and impart their vast knowledge of the game to new members. Well stocked pro shops have the latest clubs and equipment to ensure that you are well togged out to enjoy your game. Clubs can be purchased here, with the professional giving very valuable advice on which
clubs to purchase, many of which can be custom made to suit your height, weight and skill level. Another advantage of being a member of a golf club, is that you will have an official GUI handicap. This entitles you to play in open competitions on other golf courses across the country, by producing your GUI membership card. Other benefits include meeting new friends and being able to invite your family and friends to your club, where they can also avail of superb facilities. It is indeed heartening to see teenagers, in particular, taking up the game of golf. The emergence of one Rory McIlroy has had much to do with this. Ireland’ golfers, including McIlroy, as well as Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington, are all Major winners, and have had a huge impact on the development of golf, particularly among the younger generation. Several more family respite breaks are planned throughout the year, with one being a weeklong family respite break to Youghal, County Cork in June which will lead nicely into the club’s annual six-week summer programme in July and August. To achieve all of this, of course the charity has to raise funds and that’s where the annual Women’s Mini-Marathon comes in. Remember Us is currently searching for willing ladies to run, walk or crawl the June event in aid of the local charity. The mini-marathon takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, June 2nd. Remember Us are organising walking and jogging mornings and evenings to get all of its volunteers fit for the event, which will take place every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm starting Tuesday, February 25th and every Thursday morning at 10.30am starting Thursday, February 27th. The meeting point for participants will be the church car park in Balbriggan for both sessions. Remember Us will also be providing club tshirts and transport on 2nd June to take all who are participating to and from the event. So come on ladies dust off those runners and go along and get fit, have some fun, make new friends while raising much needed funds for this vital group.

is to provide young people in the area with a safe place to socialise, meet their friends and get involved in lots of activities and games. Local Kids Are ‘Appy’ With New Ipads More than 100 kids with Down syndrome around the North County and beyond have received free iPads in the last 12 months thanks to the hugely successful Down Syndrome Ireland Mobile Phone Appeal. The appeal saw charity members, businesses, schools and the public throughout the locality donate used handsets in exchange for brand new iPads for kids with Down Syndrome. Following on from the remarkable success of last year’s recycle scheme, Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) is calling on the public to root out those used mobile phones and iPods gathering dust in their homes and offices and donate them to bring joy to kids with Down Syndrome this year. The Down Syndrome Ireland Mobile Phone Appeal is a fantastic way to help local children get their hands on a brand new tablet which can have immeasurable benefits for kids with disabilities. Students with learning disabilities can enhance and develop their communication skills, learn how to adapt to situations, and develop social skills through these amazing devices and now you can help provide them with

according to HPSC specialist in public health medicine, Dr Joan O’Donnell. “It is still not too late for people around the North County who are at risk of the complications of flu to get vaccinated against the disease if they have not already done so,” she told the County Leader. “The vaccine is available free of charge from GPs for all people in at risk groups, and from pharmacists for everyone aged 65 and over. The symptoms of influenza usually develop over a matter of a few hours and include a high temperature, sore muscles, dry cough, headache and sore throat. This is different from the common cold, which tends to come on more gradually and usually includes a runny nose and a normal temperature.” “Anyone who gets flu should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and use over-the-counter remedies like paracetamol to ease symptoms. Anyone in one of the high-risk categories should contact their GP if they develop influenza symptoms,” she added.
New Community ‘Dog Walkers’ Scheme A new community based scheme has been set up across the North County, as a friendly way to change society’s attitudes about dog fouling. Green Dog Walkers is a non-confrontational scheme, which volunteers in the community can adopt and promote in their area. Volunteers wear a Green Dog Walkers armband, which acts as a friendly reminder to please pick up after your dog. Wearing the armband signifies that the volunteer has “taken the pledge” to always clean up after their dog, carry extra dog waste bags and are happy to offer one to those without. If you would like to be involved with the scheme, all you have to do is contact the County Council’s Environmental Awareness Team.

Tyres It cannot be emphasised enough how crucial it is to ensure your tyres are road safe for those looming wet, rain soaked roads. The first aspect of your tyres you must check is their thread. The thread of a tire refers to the rubber, outer layer that makes contact with the road. As you use your car the tyre thread will gradually wear down and your tyre will need to be replaced, so give yours a once over every week. Pop down to one of North Counties mechanics if you are unsure of the indicators that your thread is below the legal limit. You should also check your tyres air pressure every other day, which you can do at one of North Counties local petrol stations. You could even purchase a pressure gauge, to test your tyres air pressure yourself from home. Again if you are nervous in trying this yourself for the first time, one of North Counties excellent mechanics will be more than willing to show you how.

Motor oil is the fluid keeping your engine lubricated and without it your car will not go very far. It’s vital you check your car’s oil levels regularly and change motor oil every 4000-4500 miles. If your car’s oil levels are not correct, your engine could over-heat and cause major problems to your engine and your bank account. If you are unsure about how to check and change your oil, contact one of North Counties local mechanics and they will demonstrate how to do so.
Windows Your car’s windows, although strong are extremely vulnerable to cracks and chips and any other things that might hit them in this stormy weather. The smallest stone to hit your windscreen could make a significant chip. This chip may then develop in to a full blown crack, which will affect vision whilst driving. You may not have noticed if your windscreen has been chipped, so go over it regularly just to make sure. If you do find a chip, get it assessed and sorted out immediately. One of North Counties local windscreen experts will be able to help you with this issue.
