Balbriggan Makes A Determined Bid For Investment Thursday 6th June last may well prove to be a red letter day for Balbriggan, in terms of attracting companies to invest there. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce hosted representatives of the IDA in the Bracken Court Hotel, where they made a presentation encompassing the working history of Balbriggan, demographics, infrastructure, available zoned lands and potential ‘property solutions’. Chamber President, Anthony Murphy thanked the Chamber’s Industrial committee of Chris Harmon, Kevin Tolan and Donogh McGowan for all their work in preparing for the meeting and believes that a strong professional working relationship has begun that will hopefully yield positive results for Balbriggan in the near future. A tour of the town followed the presentation and included visits to a selection of properties, which may provide accommodation for companies seeking suitable premises from which to operate. The

The Balbriggan visit followed an initial meeting between Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and the IDA which took place on 26th May last. “The fact that the IDA agreed to visit Balbriggan within two weeks of our first meeting speaks for itself. We were proud to showcase companies who have chosen to locate and continue to successfully operate in Balbriggan such as, Arvato-Sonopress, Bridgestone, Techcrete and of course, Wavin Pipes which has been synonymous with Balbriggan since 1962. The National Passport Office was also a good example of how a Government Department chose Balbriggan as a suitable location,” said Murphy. Balbriggan has experienced the fastest
New Road Train Can Boost Tourism In Malahide An exciting new road train has been launched in Malahide, that is expected to bring a welcome boost to tourism in the seaside town. The new train, called ‘Toots the Malahide Road Train’ is the brainchild of Holywell man, Michael Place. The launch, which took place on Friday last, 14th June attracted many schoolchildren and local onlookers. The excited children were treated to sweets and a free journey to mark the launch. Local councillor, Eoghan O’Brien was very upbeat about the new train service. He told the County Leader, “The train will operate from the village and the beach car park, up to Malahide

The Department of Education have recognised this and ensured that the school chairs will be there for our children. The Department of Health has also recognised this and our new Primary Care Centre was recently granted planning permission. As a Chamber of Commerce, we need to ensure that the jobs are there for our population as they reach employment age so that they do not have to emigrate, or rely on social welfare and that they, like their parents and grandparents, can work in Balbriggan, provide for their family and feel pride in themselves and pride in their town.” “There is good reason why we entitled our presentation, ‘Balbriggan - A Working Town’ concluded Murphy.

Irish Water Safety (IWS) is pleading with the public to wear lifejackets, as accidental drownings have doubled in the past two years. This latest information will have particular relevance in the North County, which has a wonderful coastline that is enjoyed by many of our residents. The recent spell of good weather will hopefully return, so it is vital that water safety is given utmost priority and that local bathing and boating regulations are strictly observed. Last week’s tragic drowning of three brothers, out fishing in Waterford, should act as a stark reminder to local water users that the sea, rivers, lakes and reservoirs must be treated with the
utmost respect. Reservoirs are particularly dangerous, as witnessed recently with a tragic drowning in Co. Down. A statement from IWS said, “What was most alarming is that 33 people drowned accidentally in 2010, whilst last year 66 people drowned accidentally. These figures are alarming and IWS are pleading with the public to ensure that they always wear a lifejacket when they are on or near water. Most accidental drownings are preventable, so long as people wear lifejackets as our Coast Guard can deploy rescue assets such as lifeboats and helicopters to a casualty, very often in minutes from when they are alerted.” “With a long summer ahead and a promise of further good weather, IWS pleads with the public when they are on or near the water to always wear a lifejacket, as lifejackets float - you don’t.”

Brand New Home For Skerries Fire Station By Patrick Finnegan Thursday last, 13th June was a red letter day for the members of Skerries Fire Brigade. It was the day that a new fire station was officially opened. The new, state of the art fire station, is ideally situated on the Dublin Road, near the roundabout. There was a great sense of family and community spirit at the opening. Wives, children and grandchildren of firefighters, as well as former colleagues were present on the day. Children explored the fire engines and tried to mimic their fathers and grandfathers. The new station was officially opened by local councillor, Ciaran Byrne (Lab), who had special praise for the crew of Skerries Fire Station, as well as Station Officer, Damien Dorey, his two sub officers and the firefighters, who continue to provide an excellent and committed service to Skerries, Lusk, Loughshinny and Rush. Throughout the years they have attended numerous incidents, including fires, marine emergencies, road traffic accidents and cliff rescues . The former retained fire station was

located at Quay Street and had been there since the 1940s. A delighted Fire Officer, Joe Scully told the County Leader, “I never thought this day would ever come. This new building gives us easy access to and from the town and our response time has improved, due to the location. We have now gone from being a one star station to a five star one. It’s a great improvement on our previous station and everything is positive about this move,” said Joe.

New Parking Tag Initiative To Be Introduced A new Parking Tag initiative is set to be rolled out by the County Council in all of the major towns in the North County this summer. Residents will be aware of the new signage on parking information displays across the North County, informing them about where they can use the new system. Parking Tag is a cashless parking payment solution, which has been in use in Dublin city since 2009 and is operated by Payzone. The idea is that you can register on line and send a text when you want to top up your parking ticket. There is no need to return
to your car. It is ideal if you are held up at a meeting, or in a long queue in the bank etc. Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) is very upbeat about the new pay tag. He told the County Leader, “I am delighted to see the Parking Tag initiative move into the North County and the other Dublin local authority areas. I have been using it in Dublin City Centre for a number of years now and it makes paying for parking and renewing your parking, without having to go back to your car if you are in a meeting or at an appointment, so this is most welcome. It should also help motorists save money, as you can pay for a shorter period and then renew by text if you are going to be longer, so helps ensure that you don’t have to guess and overpay if using coins,” he said.

An embarrassed couple have quit their jobs after their explicit e-mails about their love life became an internet sensation. Melanie Anderson, a receptionist at an oil industry in Aberdeen, accidentally forwarded the intimate exchange with fiancé Eric Knisz to their entire office. People who have an EHIC already should check it’s still in date and can use the HSE website, www.ehic.ie, where you can renew online or make a new application. You can also apply for your EHIC at the HSE’s Local Health Offices or Health Centres. The EHIC is completely free of charge via the HSE website or from HSE Local Health Offices. While some websites charge Irish residents a fee to renew or apply for their EHIC card, this public service is available, without any charge, from the HSE. The card replaced the previous paper forms such as the E111 in 2004. Anyone living in Ireland or who intends to live here for a year may apply.

Rubbish Problem At Longlands Needs To Be Resolved
Pictured are residents of Chapel Gate Naul Road at the hazardous junction at Harry Reynolds Road. They held a meeting with councillors Tom O'Leary and David O'Connor objecting to yellow lines being proposed for Chapel Gate Naul Road. The decision was later postponed by the Council. Council Postpones Plans For Parking Restrictions In Balbriggan A group of angry residents of Chapel Gate Naul Road in Balbriggan are relieved that the County Council has decided to postpone plans to put in double yellow lines on the Chapel Gate Naul Road, which is regarded as a particularly dangerous road. Resident, Patricia McCann, lives right at the junction of Chapel Gate and Harry Reynolds Road, told the County Leader, “There are no road markings there at present, but the local authority believes the road is too narrow to allow cars to travel freely, if cars are parked there (legally). The Council had proposed to put in double yellow lines, in an effort to solve the problem. However, residents, who met with local councillors, Tom O’Leary and David O’Connor at the location in an effort to find a solution to the problem, don’t want double yellow lines, as they believe it will encourage speeding along the road. It is the main link road from Balbriggan town centre to Millfield Shopping Centre. “There is a crèche and two schools along this road, so the dangers to
By Patrick Finnegan young children of speeding motorists here is obvious. Also, many residents deliberately park their cars legally on the side of the road, in order to slow down traffic. Ideally, residents would like to see a one-way system in place from Chapel Street to the junction at Harry Reynolds Road,” she said. Following representations by Councillors, O’Leary, O’Connor and Ciaran Byrne, it was decided at the Balbriggan Swords Area Committee meeting on Thursday last to suspend the proposed parking restrictions, until council officials meet the residents and local councillors in Balbriggan Town Hall. After that, a decision will be made. Patricia told the County Leader, “Double yellow lines will encourage speeding along the road, when drivers see that there are no cars parked there. “Many residents have two cars, so their would be nowhere to park the second car. Also where would visitors park.”

Manager to clean out the rubbish built up at the Longlands green and to build up a fence at this location to prevent such ongoing dumping. He also asked to replace the existing small bin located between the two bus stops with two larger bins at each of the two bus stops. The reply was that the area is being cleaned on a regular basis. “The litter bins are too small and are not even at the bus stops. The ideal solution is to build the wall higher or else, a new fence, but this all costs money,” he concluded.
Long suffering residents of Longlands estate in Swords have had to put up with a situation, where rubbish is being thrown into their estate for far too long. Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) contacted the County Leader to highlight the problem. He said, “This situation is ongoing and is being caused by people waiting for buses opposite the Pavilions Shopping Centre, who heedlessly throw their rubbish over the low wall that separates Longlands from where the bus stops are. Resident, Marie Doyle said that “this is an persistent problem and that something has to be done about it. The area has become rat infested and, as there are a number of children in the area, there are obvious health concerns,” she said. Butler brought this problem up at a recent local Area Committee meeting and he was not satisfied with the answer when he asked the The rat infested litter black spot at Longlands and inset Cllr Darragh Butler

It’s now coming up to school holidays and it’s high time to think of the holidays. At the end of a long year looking after children or slavishly doing the same thing week after week, the thoughts of a relaxing short break or holiday is music to our ears. We are very fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, where hospitality and great food and wine are taken for granted. We regard ourselves as the land of the thousand welcomes, so why not sample it for ourselves. As Ireland is a small country and the network of roads has improved dramatically over the Celtic Tiger era, nowhere is more that two or three hours from Dublin. While the recession has had a devastating effect on our economy, the old saying, “It’s an ill wind that doesn’t blow some good” is very apt where great value is concerned. Ireland is blessed with some fabulous scenery, golf courses and beaches to make any holiday one to remember. With this in mind, a holiday or short break to one of our fabulous hotels is always well worthwhile in terms of value , entertainment and excellent food. Many of these hotels provide wonderful value, with top class service all designed
with your comfort in mind. There’s no better way to enjoy the scenery and culture that our country has to offer. Many of these hotels will offer activity holidays, where you can avail of golf, fishing, painting, cookery classes and boating to mention just a few. Our excellent road and rail network means that access is now easy and within hours, you are at your destination and ready to be entertained. Ireland’s rich history and
tradition means that you are never far away from a pub playing traditional music or a museum, where you can enjoy artefacts of our past. These can be booked on line, or through your local travel agency in many cases. Hotels will also organise day trips and if it’s located in a fishing area, a ghillie can be arranged. Walking trips are also very popular, and there’s nothing better than joining in with the singing in a traditional
Irish pub. Many fine restaurants will provide the finest local cuisine at great value. So whatever you need for a great breakaway, Ireland has something for everyone. As our weather can be unpredictable, many people long for hours of continuous, guaranteed sunshine. Recently we had exceptional weather here in Ireland, but as we’ve seen last week, it doesn’t last. For sun worshippers, there are many beautiful destina-
tions to discover, at prices to suit all pockets. All you need is your passport at the ready and you can avail of some excellent late offers that your local travel agent will have on a regular basis. Your travel agent will also tailor a holiday to suit your requirements. It may included a stay at a hotel of your choice to suit your budget, on a full or half board basis, with local tours included.

Two Plays At Millbank Theatre Two plays will be presented by the Millbank Theatre, Rush on Wednesday,19th June at 8.30pm. The first one is called ‘Six Marys’ and is written and presented by Jean Farrell. This one woman show is a comical, yet poignant look at life, from childhood in the 1950s, to the present day. It draws very much on the influence of religion as taught by the nuns preparing young Irish Catholic schoolgirls to imitate the virtues of the Virgin Mary. The second play is called ‘Holy Mary’ by Eoin Colfer and is presented by Skerries Theatre Group. It tells the story of Mary Leary from Wexford, as she makes her First Holy Communion. As Mary recounts her story, we see all the people in her life through her eight year old eyes. In turn heart rending and hilarious, her story shows that the concerns of an eight year old child are as real as the concerns of the adults in her life.

The visit to Malahide Credit Union on Friday 7th June, allowed the delegation to engage with the staff and Board of Directors, as well as ILCU President Martin Sisk, to discuss related issues and to see firsthand how a successful credit union operates. The main objective of this visit to Ireland was to gain invaluable insights into the credit union movement, in particular the supervision and regulation aspects, ahead of a new World Bank/Russian Government Microfinance Development Project in Russia. The delegation met with representatives from the Irish League of Credit Unions to learn more about the Irish credit union movement. Vivienne Keavey, Manager of Malahide Credit Union said: “We are delighted to welcome this Russian delegation to Malahide Credit
Safe And Secure Johnny Tracey spends the majority of his days in uniform. A security guard uniform, to be specific. He is surely a familiar sight around Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan, where he has been head of security since the centre opened its doors two years ago. In this week’s County Living column, we chat to the Swords man about himself, his busy day job and what he gets up to in his free time. Johnny who is based in Swords, has been working in security for the past six years, and he says he always knew he wanted to get into that particular field. “It started right from when I was young,” he said. “I originally wanted to be in the Gardai in fact, and then ended up in security a few years back when a friend offered me some part time work, so that’s really how things all started.” He worked in a couple of different areas around the locality (the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords and Omni Park in Santry), before taking up his current post as head of security in the Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan. “I love working in Millfield,” he said enthusiastically. “The centre has a great buzz to it and it’s great working with Peter Carey (the centre manager), and all the staff, to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. I work directly with Peter and we would meet every day to see what has to be done. We have a very good relationship and get on very well, so I’ll be sticking around for a while yet!” he joked. Johnny’s job keeps him extremely active and busy: he works Monday to Friday and is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “I suppose it is time consuming to some extent, but it’s all part of the job description, and the fact that I love what I do means I don’t even think about it, not after six years in the business anyway.” As head of security in the centre, the 25 year old works with a team of eight other security guards who man all the stores and carry out any maintenance necessary. “The security company I work for is Aylesbury Services (based in East Wall), and we’re that bit different to other security companies in that we do security and on site cleaning as well, so anything that needs to be fixed up and so on, we’ll do that.” The nine men who keep Millfield’s stores in check have quite a task on their hands, as they must continuously monitor the centre’s 29 stores. “Very few know that our security is such a large operation, but it is necessary for a centre that is as large as it is. Tesco also have their own in-house security and would have at least three guys on duty each day.”
He explains his duties in more detail: “My job as head of security is basically to monitor the entire centre for any suspicious activity or otherwise and ensure that my team are doing the same,” he explained. “You’ll usually see myself walking around the centre patrolling and just keeping a general eye on things. We also monitor all the cameras and also help out any of the staff in the various stores that need things done. We’re basically there to help keep everyone safe.” He says it’s important that the public who visit the centre, are aware of the presence of the security staff on a daily basis. “That’s where the uniform comes in handy,” he says, smiling. “When people see it, it would be instantly recognisable and that help’s to maintain a presence. We like to operate as subtly as possible, so that while we want people to know we’re here, we don’t want to be pushy either,” he continued. “The main thing I would deal with each day is unfortunately, a lot of theft. It’s something that’s always going to go on in a big shopping centre, but I’m very proud to say that we almost always catch the culprit. We see the same faces all the time and we know every trick in the book at this stage, so very little would get past us.” Johnny has been working in Millfield Shopping Centre since it opened its doors two years ago and he says it’s been fantastic to watch the centre grow and evolve as it has. “We’ve been particularly busy over the past year, which is great to see,” he added. “I remember the Christmas period just gone was insane; at one point all 950 car park spaces were full. It’s brilliant to see the place grow, as a lot of hard work was put into it and the centre has been a great asset to the town of Balbriggan.” In person, Johnny admits that he is quite shy, and despite working in a busy, crowd ridden shopping centre, he says he hates small spaces and crowds. “I know this is sort of a contradictory statement, but I can handle the crowds at the centre, just not a packed crowd at a gig or whatever. I’m definitely into the quieter side of life and would consider myself very much a home bird.” He says his big passion in life is motor sports and cars in particular. “Myself and my friends would go to car shows every day of the week if we could.” Though he loves his security job, he tells me that he did start a plastering apprenticeship a few years back, so he could learn a trade and have something to fall back on. “I always thought it was a good idea to have a trade so I could always go back to this if I wanted, but at the moment, I love my job in Millfield Shopping Centre and can’t see myself going anywhere any time soon,” he concluded.
My job as head of security is basically to monitor the entire centre each day.”

Life Changing Opportunities For North County Health Professionals North County Health professionals are urgently needed to work in Africa and Asia. Every year, 350,000 women die needlessly in childbirth. The vast majority of these deaths take place in low income countries there. That is why
Voluntary Services Overseas Ireland is urgently calling on Irish health professionals here in the North County and elsewhere, to consider sharing their skills. The development charity has a range of placements available in Ethiopia
for paediatricians, midwives and general practitioners as well as other clinical health professionals in late 2013. VSO volunteers have their flights, accommodation and local salary covered. For those looking for a professional and personal
challenge now is the time to apply. Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) is an international development organisation that works through volunteers to build capacity among local people in areas such as health and education. In Ethiopia, VSO is working alongside Irish Aid, the Irish government’s development programme, to reduce the infant
mortality rate. VSO urgently needs Irish people to share their skills with local nurses and doctors in Ethiopia. “Volunteers help us reach our ultimate goal of ending poverty. They share their skills and transform lives and communities across Africa and Asia. More volunteers are desperately required so they need you to

Welcome For Prefab Replacement For Local Schools Three national schools in the North County will receive funding to replace existing prefabs with permanent accommodation, according to local TD, Alan Farrell (FG). Students in St. Oliver Plunkett’s school in Balrothery, St. Patricks Junior School and Holmpatrick National School in Skerries can look forward to being taught in permanent classrooms, instead of prefabricated buildings, as a result of government investment in education facilities in the North County. Farrell told the County Leader, “I recently met with the principal of St. Oliver Plunkett’s National School who had been seeking to provide students with permanent accommodation, and I would like Farrell TD to congratulate all three principals on their dedicated efforts to improve education facilities for their students and our future generations.” “Replacing prefabs offers better accommodation for students and savings for schools and the Exchequer, as well as providing construction jobs. More importantly, however, it will mean a significant improvement to the education and well-being of our future generation,” he concluded.
The Brackenstown School Parents Association are holding their annual Golf Classic event on Friday, 13th September next at Swords Open Golf Club. Tee times are from 1.00pm until 3:00pm. Balbriggan Gets The Hump! Residents of Balbriggan may have thought that they had woken up on holidays in Morocco recently, when they were confronted with a two humped Bactrian camel grazing at the roadside. The answer was not quite as exotic, as The Circus Gerbola was in Balbriggan last week and one of its stars, the camel was pictured enjoying the sweet grass of Balbriggan.
