Dublin Airport Welcomes Wow Air Route Expansion Dublin Airport welcomes the announcement by Wow air that it is to increase capacity on its Dublin Reykjavik route by 70 per cent this summer. Iceland’s low cost airline will increase the number of flights it operates from three to five flights weekly commencing May 30. Speaking to the County Leader, Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said he is delighted to see Wow air expanding its service by 70 per cent for summer 2016. “There has been excellent demand for Wow air’s Dublin-Reykjavik flights both in Ireland and Iceland and the decision to add an extra return flight every week is clear evidence of the strong market for the route. Swords Charity Shop Under New Management The newly revamped National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) charity shop, which is located at River Mall in Swords, has a new manager at the helm. The shop was previously known as Mrs Quin’s Charity shop, which was popular with people looking for a bargain, while helping a worthy cause in the process. New manager, Daniel Boyne told the County Leader, “I took over here three

weeks ago as manager and we cleared the place out in an effort to make it more appealing to our customers, and we are looking for donations of children’s and ladies and gents items of clothing, as well as bric a brac, CDs, DVDs and electrical items. At the moment we have a staff of five volunteer workers and we are hoping that the new shop will be successful,” he said.

Continued from page 1 A buoyant O’Reilly spoke to the County Leader after being elected. She said, “We’ve been campaigning since last March and we have been canvassing up to seven times a week, where we have been out talking to people, so it’s no surprise to me. We have a fantastic team and we have been positive all the way throughout this campaign, where we set out our stall. Not only did we talk to as many people as possible, we actually listened to them,” she said. Many political observers believed that O’Reilly would have been disadvantaged in this campaign, not being from the constituency, but she poured cold water on that assumption. “This was never an issue and if you are out working fourteen

hours a day in a constituency, and working hard, it doesn’t matter where you live. People on the doorsteps have said to me, “You’re the only candidate who has knocked on my door, so I don’t care where you live,” she said. Alan Farrell (FG) also survived the push against the Government parties and much of this is down to hard work by the Malahide man. Speaking to the County Leader about his win, Alan Farrell said: “I started my reelection campaign on the Drynam Road in Swords on 4th January 2013. I remember it well, as it was wet and windy. At that time we were not doing too well in the polls. It was a very hard campaign, but I’m absolutely elated to have been reelected by the people of Dublin Fingal.” “The level of support I

Malahide Historical Lecture The Malahide Historical Society will presents a talk by Ann Matthews on Wednesday 9th March at 8pm in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Dublin Road. Ms Matthews is a historian, author

and playwright and currently lectures at NUI Maynooth on Women and War and Republican women and iconography. She has published six books about the roles of women in the period from 1913 to 1922. The overall feeling among many people is that this election campaign was a lacklustre affair, with little or no bite. In the end, the five elected representatives, Darragh O’Brien, Clare Daly, Alan Farrell, Brendan Ryan and Louise O’Reilly now have an onerous responsibility to make sure that the

interests of the country are foremost in their minds, but that vital infrastructural and job creation opportunities are brought to the North County, and to ensure that the recovery, such as it is, becomes visible and felt in a real and meaningful way by all here in North County Dublin.

Excitement As Local Enterprise Week Approaches The eagerly awaited Local Enterprise Week is just around the corner and excitement is growing all over the county, as six companies are vying for the coveted title of Fingal Enterprise Award winner 2016. The event runs from 7th to 13th March and many events have been scheduled, aimed at anyone thinking of starting a new business, new start-ups and growing SME’s. The event kicks off with an event titled Public Procurement for small businesses in the BEaT Centre, Balbriggan and culminates on Saturday 12th with a ‘Start Your Own Business’ boot

This promises to be a great event for both junior and intermediate level entrants and is free of charge. Cycle Event For Down’s Syndrome A first ever cycle event for Down’s Syndrome Ireland will take on Sunday next, 6th March, leaving from St Finian’s GAA club, River Valley, Swords. This charity event is the brainchild of friends, Dave Masterson and Shane Graham, and they explained to the County Leader how the idea was hatched. Dave said, “We came up with the idea to run the event when we were out cycling together one day. One of our friends, who had been heavily involved in raising funds for Down’s Syndrome Ireland, Aidan Lynam was tragically killed last year in a motor cycling event called the Rev-Up and we thought it would be a good idea to carry on the great work that Aidan did before his untimely death,” said Dave, who is manager of Cab 2000 in Swords. There has been great support from local businesses, including Empire Bar, Swords, Cab 2000, Centra River Valley, SuperValu Boroimhe, Donnelly’s Fruit, Richies Bike Store and many more and both Dave and Shane would like to acknowledge this support. The inaugural event will take place this Sunday, 6th March, leaving from St Finian’s GAA club in Swords. There are two events, one leaves at 10am and the second leaves at 10.15am. They include a 45 kilometre cycle to Skerries, with a stop at the harbour and back to St Finian’s. The second event is a little more challenging and includes a 70 kilometre trip taking in Lusk, Rush, Skerries, Balbriggan, Naul and back for a circuit of Dublin airport, before returning to St Finian’s. There will be a BBQ there with lots of

The school celebrates a glittering decade with the Student Enterprise awards programme, being the largest entrant in the programme in Fingal. Jigsaw Opens New Hub In Balbriggan

Rose Of Tralee Returns To Her Old School Elysa Brennan, the current Rose of Tralee paid a visit to her old school, Scoil Phádraic Cailíní in Donabate. Eylsa is a past pupil of the school and completed all of her primary school education there. School principal, Ciara Greene told the County Leader, “We invited Elysa out to the school as we are very proud of her and the achievements of our past pupils. She makes a lovely role model for our girls, as a medical student and the ambassador for the Rose of Tralee she epitomises the example that with hard work and dedication, the future is there for the taking. We always encourage our

girls to work hard and aim high. It was also very timely given that we have been working on Global Citizenship as part of the Green School Initiative,” said Ms Greene. “There was great excitement in the hall as our guest of honour arrived, she was greeted by some of the infant girls donning their own tiaras! The 5th class girls entertained her with some of their songs from their recent performance in the Peace Promsin the RDS. Elysa enthralled the girls with her account of the Rose of Tralee competition, as well as her charity work and travel, as part of her role. She also shared with them some of her fond memories of her school days in Scoil Phádraic Cailíní. The girls presented her with a card and certificate to commemorate the occasion and Elysa dutifully obliged us by planting a rose bush in the school garden.” Elysa was the first winner of the Rose of Tralee to represent Meath. This is because she is resident there, but she assured everyone that she is a Donabate girl through and through.

The new hub for Jigsaw North Fingal was officially launched last Monday 22nd february by Minister James Reilly TD. Jigsaw North Fingal is a vital free and confidential service that supports young people’s mental health and wellbeing. Jigsaw is a resource that every community needs. They know that 75 per cent of mental health difficulties emerge before the age of 24, so if they can get in early and provide brief supports, and can often prevent problems escalating into chronic mental health issues. The new hub is located at the old AIB building on George’s Square in Balbriggan, where Jigsaw North Fingal seeks to strengthen the community’s ability to support young people aged 12-25 with their mental health. It works with young people in designing and planning a service that is youth friendly and accessible. Jigsaw provides a safe and confidential space where young people aged 12-25 can avail of free one-to-one support, as well as accessing clear pathways to other specialist services. Jigsaw also supports concerned adults by providing advice, information and

signposting. It focuses on the development of family education and support programmes. Minister Reilly said at the opening: “The opening of Jigsaw North Fingal’s new hub here on George’s Square in Balbriggan is great news for North Fingal. Jigsaw’s role in

Council Funding Announced For Summer Projects The County Council has confirmed that funding for Summer Project Programme events, was recently launched by County Mayor, Cllr. David O Connor. A total of €70,000 has been allocated for these projects. Last year a total of 37 groups, including five new groups, almost 3,500 children and young people availed of the Council’s Summer Project Funding, and this year they are anxious to increase this number. The grant, for funding of up to €2,000, can be applied for by community and project groups. With all Summer Projects, the emphasis is placed on encouraging community involvement and development. Last Call For Entrants For Irish Aid Awards The North County was well represented at the 2015 Awards, with Balbriggan ETNS; Milverton N.S., Skerries; and Gaelscoil Bhrian Bóroimhe, Swords making it to the regional finals. North County primary school pupils from 3rd to 6th class are encouraged to enter the 2016 Our World Irish Aid Awards and imagine what our world might look like in 2030. Through the Awards, pupils learn about the lives of children in developing countries and the work of Irish Aid, the Government’s programme for overseas development. Pupils then create projects to highlight the challenges facing poor communities in developing countries, and the progress being achieved by Ireland and other countries in the global effort to fight poverty. The theme of the 2016 Awards, ‘One World, One Future’, asks pupils to imagine how their world might look in 2030, and enables them to learn about the new United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development, which seek to address the root causes of poverty worldwide. Over 1,000 primary schools throughout Ireland participated in the Our World Irish Aid Awards in 2015. Registration for the 2016 Awards programme is now open and the deadline for entries is Friday, March 11th 2016. All entries are assessed on their creativity, understanding of the theme, and their impact. 60 schools whose projects illustrate strengths across these three areas will receive an ‘Our World Irish Aid Award’ plaque at regional awards ceremonies in May. From these the 12 top entries will win a place at the final awards ceremony in June, where they will receive trophies, with one outstanding project winning the overall ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ trophy. The inaugural Our World Irish Aid Awards Teacher of the Year Award will also be introduced at the national finals this year, where one teacher will be recognised for their outstanding contribution to the Awards and be invited to act as an ambassador for the Awards for the 20162017 programme.

Skerries Golf Club Captains Drive In Skerries Golf Club held its Captains Drive In on Saturday 20th February last. The day saw the Men’s Captains, Peter Counihan and Lady Captain, Pauline Gaughran, together with the Junior Boys Captain, Jack O’Driscoll and Junior Girls Captain, Kate O’Kelly start off the playing season and their terms of office in the traditional drive off the first tee. They were cheered on by their fellow members together with their respective families who turned up to support them. For Men’s Captain Peter, it was even more special for him and his family as he followed in the footsteps of his father, who was Captain of Skerries Golf Club 50 years ago in 1966. The 1916 dress theme for the day was taken on by the members, with the prize for Best Dressed Lady won by Jo Price and Best Dressed Man won by her husband, Laurence. Runners up were Jim Gaughran and Yvonne Daniels. Speaking afterwards, both Pauline and Peter said that as we entered into a very significant year in Irish history, they would like to wish all members of Skerries Golf Club a very memorable and enjoyable year both on and off the golf course. They both very much appreciated the good wishes and pledges of support from members for the coming year and looked forward to welcoming members and visitors to the club during the year. From the moment the doors were opened to the count centre for the Dublin Fingal constituency at the National Show Centre in Cloghran, there was a buzz of anticipation in the air. Expectations were high on the day that this could well be a day of momentous change in local and national politics. From 8.45am, tally men and women from all the main parties, as well as independents positioned themselves with military like precision at the railing beside the counters as they emptied the first boxes at precisely 9am. Working in pairs, they concentrated on first preference votes for their candidates. Such is their expertise and accuracy, that two tally veterans separately called the outcome of the election as early as 9.30am. Both predicted that O’Brien, Daly, O’Reilly, Farrell and Ryan would be elected, with Minister Reilly already doomed to failure. This proved to be the exact outcome, and this was after only half and hour and only a fraction of the boxes opened. There was a disappointing showing for Tony Murphy (Independent Alliance), who only got a fraction of predicted votes, with barely any mention of Lorraine Clifford Lee or Barry Martin. Local councillors and other familiar local faces milled around, desperately scratching at posts trying to find out how their candidates were faring. As the day progressed, the atmosphere in the count centre at the National Show Centre at Cloghran became quite muted and seemed to lack the excitement and cut and thrust of five years ago. The question on everyone’s lips was would Fianna Fail make a dramatic comeback after the fiasco of 2011, or had the electorate forgiven them for their part in the

economic crash. The answer would unfold in a most dramatic way as the day progressed. Speculation was rife, as tallies showed that Fianna Fail had increased their first preference vote from 7,634 in 2011 to 13,952, up a staggering 82 per cent on last time. Fine Gael were at 11,911, down from 15,488, a drop of 23 per cent on the same time five years ago. Similarly Labour dropped from 13,014 to 5,906, a drop of 55 per cent. The dye was cast and we all knew that a seismic change was about to take pace, not only at the National Show Centre, but all across the country. The results of the first count were imminent and textures and tweeters informed Darragh O’Brien to get himself to the count centre as soon as possible, as he was certain to be elected. At 3pm, O’Brien arrived to massive applause, normally reserved for pop stars. A mix up with ballot papers would cause a delay in the official announcement that O’Brien had secured his seat. But by 6.30pm, it was announced that Darragh O’Brien was the first to be elected in the Dublin Fingal constituency, topping the polls and taking his seat after the first count and the result confirmed the tally figure, that he was elected immediately, with a first preference vote of 10,826, comfortably exceeding the quota of 10,065. This led to scenes of wild celebrations, as TV crews and reporters from all media scrambled to get the first words from the newly elected Dail deputy. One Fine Gael activist said that Fianna Fail may well have ended up as the largest party, had they run more candidates, a theory shared by Government supporters. Next to be elected was Clare Daly with a total of 10, 566 votes, exceeding the quota by 500 odd votes. Now we thought that things would speed up, as it was now well into the evening. It was not to be, and by 1am in the morning, a recount was called by Barry Martin of Independents 4 Change. His vote was a mere 22 short of Fianna Fail’s Lorraine Clifford Lee and it was decided to resume at 10am later that morning. At this stage, everyone was exhausted, particularly the weary counters. The recount showed no material change to the original count and Barry Martin was eliminated. In the meantime, the arrival of Martin McGuinness and Mary-Lou McDonald to the count centre to support

Next up for elimination was Clifford Lee, and in a dramatic few minutes, the remaining three seats were filled through her distributed votes and Louise O’Reilly (SF), Alan Farrell (FG) and Brendan Ryan (Lab) were all elected simultaneously without reaching the quota. It was a remarkable achievement by Ryan and his team, as they bucked the trend against Labour. A long and sometimes tedious day and a half came to a sudden ending and workers immediately began dismantling the partitions and within halfan-hour, there was not a sign that any event had taken place at the venue. As people dispersed and headed home for dinner at about 2.30pm, there was a sense that in such an historic year, that political history had been made. I wonder what would the leaders of 100 years ago have made of it all.

Every year in June, Dublin holds the unique VHI Mini Marathon. This year’s event takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th June and already women from all over the North County are preparing themselves for the big day. You can see them in their high viz fluorescent tops, as they pound the roads across the North County. Over 40,000 woman will take place in the 10K run which is the world’s biggest female only event! The marathon is a great opportunity to both achieve your fitness goals, and help raising money for a good cause. The great thing about the VHI Mini Marathon is that it’s open to everyone. No matter if you want to get fit or are a professional runner, this is an event we all share together. There are different categories: Walking, Jogging, Fast Jogging (all open to participants over 14 years old), Running and Elite Running (for runners older than 18 years). So even if you are not too fit (yet), get involved! This event presents a great opportunity for many charities to look for participants to run for their cause. In almost all cases, women run for a particular worthy cause or charity and they hope is that all participants will support these charities that do such wonderful work for people in need of help. Apart from raising money for a good cause, it gives you a reason to train even harder. Choose a charity based on your interests: Maybe you have recently lost a family member to a certain disease or have recovered yourself from an illness. No matter what you opt for, be sure to check if your charity is registered to avoid disappointment. The best way to stay motivated is to train together. Motivate a friend, work colleague or family member to participate together. It’s a good way to never lose your goal out of sight. In addition, you can share tips and tricks with a person who knows you well or get to know someone better, from a different point of view. Involve your friends and family. Decide if you want them to sponsor you per mile you run, or based on the time you need to reach the end. You can also ask a local business to sponsor

People Movement Is all of Europe starting to fall to bits about us? The events of the past weeks give cause for real concern. The summit of the Home Affairs Ministers on the migrant crisis last week with the Deputy Turkish PM was chaotic. Officials accused Greece of exercising no control while they in turn complained that Austria’s closure of the Balkan Route would lead to log jams. This caused Greece’s Migrant Minister to say “Greece will not accept becoming Europe’s Lebanon”. The EU is in discussions with Turkey to make €3Bn available in an effort to slow the flow of migrants. The EU’s Commissioner has said that there are only a few days in which to reduce the numbers of migrants coming to Europe or face the breakdown of the entire system. This, along with the problems at the French Calais camp, is a sign that time is running out. UK Conservatives are split on the Brexit issue and that debate will not help the stability in the rest of the EU. Some who are campaigning to leave suggest that an exit vote will open the door for a new set of negotiations with the EU and deliver a better deal

The number of students reporting mental health issues has increased, but as a result of hiring restrictions most colleges

Research by USI found that 73.1 per cent of students said the high cost of college causes them anxiety or stress; 71.7 per cent of students regularly feel down - 36 per cent of students feel down every day; and a further 35.7 per cent feel down every week. County Leader, Kevin Donoghue, USI President, said; “An action plan for mental health promotion in third level should be included within the development and implementation of a Health Promoting College Network. Waiting lists for counselling can be up to six weeks which raises serious concerns for students in distress. Crisis response should be urgent and 24/7 – waiting a month and a half is harmful for anyone in need of support.” Donoghue concluded

by saying “We are urging the government to increase funding given specifically for the provision of adequate counselling services to all third level students either through the direct employment of more counsellors or in purchasing external counselling session hours.” Donoghue said, “The next government should deliver more funding to Higher Education Institutions, specifically allocated for counselling staff and mental health services.”

North County Women In The Dark About Menopause Still a ‘taboo’ as 1 in 2 women in the North County say friends are the only ones that understand ‘the change’ Only 1 in 4 women in the local area realised that ‘the change’ had begun when the menopause arrived in their lives, according to a new study by Vichy to support the expansion of the Vichy Neovadiol range, the first skincare collection formulated specifically for menopausal and post-menopausal women. For 3 in 4 women in the region, they didn’t piece the symptoms together and actually realise they were going through ‘the change’. For 44 per cent of women in the North County, it took them a few months before they realised that the symptoms they were experiencing were in fact the menopause, while only 15 per cent found out they were in menopause from their healthcare professional. The Vichy Neovadiol ‘No Pause at Menopause’ study of 500 women in Ireland aged 45 and over provides an interesting comparison between the perceptions of women who have not gone through the menopause and those who are /

have. The starkest comparison that is found is the expected age at which menopause will start. For women in Dublin who haven’t experienced the menopause, only 10 per cent of them think that it can start between the ages of 45 to 49, and a further 62 per cent expect it to start from age 50 to 54. The average age for menopause in Ireland is 53 according to the study, but for one-third of women going through the menopause it started as early as 45. Speaking to the County Leader, Aisling Grimely, founder of My Second Spring which is an online community in Ireland for menopausal women, said: “Despite the huge social progress we’ve seen in Ireland even this year, Menopause remains a taboo topic and the more information that women can access, the better. The Vichy Neovadiol ‘No Pause at Menopause’ study has succeeded in shining a spotlight on an important life stage for the thousands of women going through the menopause in Ireland today and I am delighted to support the campaign.”

Butler Happy With Funding For Swords Projects Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) has expressed his delight at the allocation of funding for road projects in Swords. He told the County Leader, “As part of the Road and Special works Programmes 2016, €42,000 has been allocated for a pedestrian crossing at the junction of the Brackenstown Road and Murrough Road. This will provide a safe place for pedestrians and children to cross going to and from the new playground and Swords

Manor, St. Cronan’s, Valley View and all of the Murrough Road. It will also result in slowing down traffic on this busy stretch of road. The five Swords councillors from the previous council asked for this to be implemented when the playground was being built, so this is great news for this area of the town,” he said. Butler was also pleased to report that €9,500 has been allocated to install a footpath and safety bollards along the

green open space at Jugback Lane, where resident have complained about footballs coming out on the road and also people walking up Jugback Lane, where cars were actually coming up on the green. There is not enough room for two cars to pass and the fact that they are putting bollards and safety path for pedestrians there is very welcome news indeed. Congratulations must go to the Resident’s Committee who lobbied successfully for this and we will continue to follow up on this issue until these proposals are delivered,” concluded Butler.
