Last Tuesday, 8th August was a red letter day in the history of Swords Mens Shed, when the sod was turned on their new premises on the site of the new Aldi Supermarket on Seatown Road in the town. Building is expected to commence later this year, with the new premises due to open next February. The new site was presented to the group by Knife Edge Developments which is owned by brothers, Paul and Anthony Dunne. The sod turning ceremony was performed by Deputy County Mayor, Cllr Eithne Loftus and was attended by a large gathering of local representatives, including councillors, Anne Devitt, Joe Newman, Adrian Henchy, Philip Lynam, as well as local TD, Louise O’Reilly and members of Swords Mens

Shed. The deputy mayor spoke about the mental health benefits that accrue from the presence of Mens Sheds in any area and how important they are in countering loneliness and depression in more elderly men. She said that statistics show that the number of suicides have reduced in these areas. Up to now, Swords Mens Sheds have operated at the Riasc Centre at Drynam Road, which has now become too small for their needs. Thanks

By Patrick Finnegan was expressed to the Riasc Centre for their contribution to the success of the group. Chairperson of Swords Mens Shed, Michael Quinn told the County Leader, “This is an historic day and a dream come true. We had been so frustrated after working very hard, raising money and researching to try and find a suitable premises for Swords Mens Shed. What Paul and Anthony Dunne from Knife Edge Developments have done for us is just amazing,” he said. Michael continued, “We hope to be in our new premises by February 2017, which means we will not be restricted to the number of hours we can operate. Prior to this, we were limited to just a few hours per week. Now we can open for six days per week. This is what the members want because the whole thing about the Mens Shed is determined by what the members want. The workshop here will be three times the size of our existing workshop, which is a massive step up for us. The fact that we will be located close to the centre of Swords, means that we don’t need to worry about transportation, where members can walk here,” said a

delighted Michael. Developers, Paul and Anthony Dunne were instrumental in Swords Mens Shed getting to where they are today. Paul Dunne said, “When we were introduced to the site at Seatown Road, we came up with the idea of putting a supermarket there. There was a piece of surplus land there and

we came up with the idea of putting it to community use. We approached Cllr Anne Devitt and Cllr Darragh Butler to find out which group could avail of this land. “Anthony had been approached about four years ago by a group calling themselves Swords Mens Shed and we had never heard of them. We went to a meeting with them and we explained to

them and we gave them our support and the group expanded at a great rate. Initially there had been problems with planning permission, but thanks to John Downey and his team, this problem was overcome,” he said. A fundraising concert will take place in December at the Riasc Centre, which will help to kit out the new building. See picture on page 4

It is the ICA’s social event of the year and the ladies looked glamourous in their fancy outfits. They feasted on a hot and cold buffet in the garden followed later on by strawberries and cream. The outdoor entertainment included line dancing followed by a fashion show. The ladies finished the evening by dancing until late in the Kellogg’s Hall in An Grianan House. Balbriggan Chamber Targets New Industry Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce President’s Lunch will take place on Friday 4th November 2016 at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan at 2:00 pm. The Principal Speaker will be Martin Shanahan, Chief Executive of the Industrial Development Authority (IDA). Chamber CEO, Sean Corrigan confirmed that there are very positive moves for Balbriggan to attract new business and

industry to the area. He told the County Leader, “The Chamber is working to attract new business to the Enterprise Zone of the town, where there is a land bank of over 200 acres. This is the area roughly from Junction 6 on the M1 towards the town. The future of Balbriggan is all about the development of this area. It is proposed that it will be similar to the D15 Enterprise Zone, which was rolled out by

the County Council recently. With this in mind, it’s great to have the CEO of the IDA, Martin Shanahan to address the meeting,” he said. Corrigan was very upbeat about the prospects for Balbriggan in attracting new business to the town and he is working to attract industry from outside the area to come and listen to what’s on offer in Balbriggan. There is also a concerted effort

to upgrade shop fronts in the town. “The Chamber is working very closely with Fingal County Council to attract industry and the shop front renewal scheme, where the Council are providing funding up to 75 per cent for replacement or upgrading of shop fronts. We are also working very closely with Balbriggan Tourism on Bremore Castle,” concluded Corrigan.

Dublin Airport was the fastest growing major airport in Europe in the first six months of this year, according to new data from ACI Europe, the trade association for European airports. Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport increased by 13.4 per cent in the first half of the year, making Dublin the leading performer among top tier European airports, which have more than 25 million passengers per year. The growth at Dublin follows last year’s recordbreaking performance when the airport welcomed 25 million passengers for the first time. In the first six months of this year, traffic at Dublin Airport grew faster than at Barcelona’s El-Prat Airport, Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, Copenhagen Airport and Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The average growth across European airports was 4.9 per cent in the first half of the year, with airports in the European Union reporting stronger average passenger growth of 6.2 per cent, according to ACI Europe. Traffic at non-EU airports within Europe was almost flat in the first half, growing by just 0.5 per cent. Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said, “Dublin Airport had a very strong performance in the first half of this year, welcoming just over 13 million passengers. “The growth in passenger numbers at Dublin Airport is having a significant impact on the Irish economy,” Mr Harrison added, “bringing increased trade and investment and also driving higher visitor numbers, which is in turn boosting the Irish tourist industry,” he said. Dublin Airport is also progressing its plans for the new €320 million North Runway at the airport, which is essential to allow the airport to grow, and will be a key enabler for the Irish economy for decades to come.

This is roughly the equivalent of two and-a-half marathons. Michael ran for St Francis Hospice, Raheny and he spoke to the County Leader about this mammoth achievement. He said, “There were plenty of hills and challenges along the way, in the shape of strong head winds. However, the challenge was exciting and enjoyable, particularly as I was running for such a great cause. I had wonderful support along the way, particularly from my wife, Tracy, who helped me along the way. We had four seasons in the one day, which added to the challenge,” he said. Michael, who is a regular marathon runner completed the course in 11 hours and 49 minutes. with no stops along the way. “I was emotional at the finish line, when I realised I had run further than I ever had before for such a great cause. The occasion was made all the more poignant when of St Francis Hospice. Portmarnock Students Excel In SAGE World Cup Four students from Portmarnock Community School have had a remarkable result in the Student Advancement for Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) World Cup in Manila in the Philippines. They represented Ireland in the competition, which was competed for by 32 countries from across the globe. They came runners-up in the competition behind the eventual winners, Canada. The students, Ravikanth Gollapalli, Colin McAndrew, Emma Ford and Anbu Sundar can be very proud of their achievement and the great preparation they put into their

project. Prior to leaving Dublin Airport on Wednesday, 10th August on their week long odyssey, Colin McAndrew, one of the students told the County Leader, “We’re participating and representing Ireland at the event., with our project that makes maps for developing countries. We qualified by winning the Young Social Innovators of the Year 2016 as global citizens mapping the future.” Teacher Niall Fitzgerald, who was one of three teachers who accompanied the students to Manila, was clearly delighted with the achievements of the

four students. He said, “We’re very proud of these wonderful students who put two and-a-half years of hard work into this project, with the past month being particularly hard. They worked through the holiday period, such is their dedication, where they met at least three times per week,” he said. “A vital key to the success of the students was the school’s participation for the past few years in Lesotho, as part of Action Ireland programme, where they learned about mapping and these vibrant students were able to apply technology in developing apps for emergency call out services. They have certainly taken this to a level way beyond my expectations and they are a great credit to their families and to the school,” said Niall.

The festival had an amazing line up of entertainment, which began on Friday, 29th July and continued until Bank Holiday Monday, 1st August, with lots of exciting surprises in store for everyone. Irish Girl Guides (IGG) members from across the country, including girls from Swords, Portmarnock and Donabate have trekked 40,000 kilometres in the past six months – the same distance as walking the entire way around the globe! Girls, young women and volunteer leaders from 200 IGG units around the country took part in the Global Trek. Some walked around their neighbourhoods and local parks, while others hiked in forests, around lakes, up mountains, along beaches and on overseas Girl Guide trips. The initial goal was to walk 20,000 km – the distance from the North Pole to the South Pole – by 1st May last. This target was reached ahead of schedule, however, and the girls enjoyed the challenge so much that they decided to see if they could clock up enough kilometres to make it back to the North Pole. “This year we introduced a new category, Commemorations and Centenaries, to showcase the enormous effort that was put into projects and events to celebrate and commemorate 1916 across the country. I would like to congratulate the twenty three shortlisted local authorities and acknowledge the excellent work being undertaken by all local authorities in Ireland,” he said. The Excellence in Local Government Awards are held in association with the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government. The winners will be announced at the 13th annual awards ceremony on 24th November at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood, Santry. Awards will be presented for excellence in sixteen different categories and one local authority will be awarded the overall award and named Local Authority of the Year 2016.

h Contour W it CONFIDENCE The power of contouring continues to make waves in the beauty industry, but theface sculpting make-up technique can play havoc with the skin. Contour and highlighting can create flattering and sophisticated looks, but the heavy handed application that contouring requires can cause sensitive or acne prone skin to flare

up. With non-comodogenic properties, the Youngblood Contour Palette (RRP €43)is specifically developed for problem skin. This contouring kit is completely free from talc, perfumes and chemical dyes, which can be harsh on the skin. The unique, lightweight formula also contains skin soothing ingredients such as Aloe Vera

and Honeysuckle, making it feel exceptionally comfortable.Composed of three easy to blend shades for highlighting, paired with three complimentary shades for contouring, the Youngblood Contour Palette shapes and enhances the facial features, creating a beautiful naturally defined look.

Swords man, Joe Hughes is confident that he has managed to grow Ireland’s tallest sunflower at his allotment in Malahide. Joe, who is retired has a site at the allotment since June 2014 told the County Leader how he became involved in growing sunflowers. “I was on the verge of moving to Cavan when I saw the allotment for rent. I just needed to put up a poly tunnel with a little bit of land. The Malahide allotments are run by trustees of the Epilepsy Carers Foundation of Ireland. I have three allotments here now and it’s a great way of getting out of the house and watch the seasons change. “I started off digging by hand and fertilised it naturally. Prior to this I had no experience of horticulture and I learned it all from the internet and checking out some excellent books. I learned all about pest control in an environmentally friendly way,” he said. I became interested in sunflowers when I did an art course at Skerries Mills and I was always fascinated by the Dutch Master, Van Gogh and the principle of sunflowers. I just developed a liking for the whole thing and I decided to try and grow some sunflowers. I am growing three different types, namely the Titan, a 12 footer, the Giraffe, which grows to a maximum of 17 feet and the Tasty Treat, so called because you can eat the leaves, the petals and the seeds. “The fact that the climate is changing in Ireland is forwarded as one of the reasons why sunflowers are becoming more numerous, whereas years ago you had to go to Spain and such places to find them. Because of the proliferation of sunflowers, there is also an increase in the bee population, which is vital for the growth of flowers and plants,” said Joe. Joe has seven very tall sunflowers growing at the allotment and he is considering calling them after the seven signatories of the Proclamation, given the year that’s in it. He uses seaweed tea to achieve the height and is very aware that the seven sunflowers may well be the tallest in

the whole country and he expects to challenge for the record in the next few years. The record height for Britain and Ireland is 20 feet, which belongs to a grower in England, with 30 feet having been achieved in Germany. However, determined Joe has a sharp eye on the record books and hopes to land a record breaking sunflower in the not too distant future.

Love it or hate it, it’s almost time to wave goodbye to the breezy summer holidays and start getting ready for a new school year. Getting the new school year off to a good start can influence your children’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academi-

cally. The transition from August to September can be difficult for both children and parents. Even children who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and pressures associated with school life. The degree of adjust-

ment depends on the child, but parents can help their children manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude. Here are a few suggestions to help ease the transition and get the school year off to a great start:

mind. Be sure to ask your local pharmacist if you have any concerns or queries, and they can advise you what your next step is. This is a particularly good option if your child is stressed or feeling anxious about the weeks ahead.

Some schools do have an “official” uniform store, but they vary both in terms of price, and as to how insistent they are that parents shop there. These shops can be very expensive, and by no means do you have to buy uniforms from these stores. In fact, the North County has many excellent ‘back to

While these local Sinn Féin TD figures are only small, Louise O’ Reilly has the increase is said that the increase in worrying.” the numbers on the Live “What is most worrying Register in Balbriggan about the figures in and Swords is both Balbriggan and “worrying”. She also Cllr. O’Reilly Swords is the trend for highlighted the worrying increase in women on more women to sign on to the the Live register and called on Live Register, while the the Minister for Social numbers of men on the live register in both offices is Protection to take action. O’Reilly told the County Leader, decreasing. In Balbriggan, there “The release of the Live are an extra 59 women on the Register figures show that there live register and in Swords, are 128 extra people on the live there are an extra 126.

O’Reilly continued, “It is becoming clear that so-called labour market activation measures in the past have disadvantaged women. This has been the focus of media attention most recently in the case of Erica Fleming, who, because of changes to lone parent’s payments by Joan Burton, is now no longer eligible for Back to Education Allowance and may miss a place in college. This is something that needs to be reviewed urgently and I am calling on the Minister to take note of these worrying trends and to take action as a matter of priority.” “Any recovery taking place in Ireland must be inclusive and equal and neither women nor lone parents should be left behind. The welfare system must take account of this,” she concluded.

There is a growing mood within the corridors of the EU that the actions of former Commission President, José Manual Barroso are such as to warrant the removal of his EU pension. Staff members of many of the EU institutions have signed a letter demanding “strong exemplary measures” against their former boss. Less than two years since Barroso headed up the Commission, he is set to join the Investment Bank, Goodman Sachs, at its London Headquarters as non-executive chairman of International Operations. It seems that part of his mandate will be to advise how to limit the negative effects of Brexit. The European Ombudsman, our own Emily O’Reilly has now sought the tightening of the rules on Commissioners taking appointments on leaving office. In the past many former Commissioners have taken appointment which raised eyebrows, but this is the first occasion that a former president’s actions have been questioned. All of the posts within the Commission carry large remuneration packages. Part of the justification for which, surely is, that they act with integrity on leaving office and allow an appropriate time before accepting related appointments. Both Hungary and Italy face into referendum campaigns this autumn. The citizens of Hungary will be asked in October should the EU or their national Government decide the country’s migration policy. It is expected that the people’s decision will

be that it is their Government’s function. If this is the case, it will further raise tensions across many central European countries who subscribe to a similar view. How the EU can ensure a cohesive policy is difficult to see. In November, Italy will consider constitutional reforms. The outcome is unclear but Renzi the PM has made the outcome in effect a vote of confidence, thus By Cathal Boland providing the opportunity of a common platform for his opponents to join forces against him. It is suspected that if he is on the losing side he will step down creating a new crisis for the Italian political system. Guy Verhofstadt the leader of the ALDE Group in the EU Parliament has launched a campaign for change within the EU. He maintains that reform is imperative for the EU to survive. This view is common across many member states, but now a Leader of a main block within Parliament has placed it centre stage it must surely become the focus for the remaining period of this Parliament. Verhofstadt has also called for member states to adopt a “defence readiness” position. This is due to the activities of the Russian Federation on the borders of Ukraine. He suggests that a further encroachment on the Ukraine may be imminent. That view is shared by others. Should it happen, then it would seem that Europe would have little option but to support Ukraine or ceded its credibility as a military force. Verhofstadt perhaps is also looking at the prospect of a Trump win in the USA and what that means for NATO and the recent events in Turkey and President Erdoan’s “Peace Meeting” with Putin.

As we hit mid-August with Bricks 4 Kidz’s summer camps still in full swing, Joanne Hartnett reflects on the first few weeks of her new venture. “The camps have been extremely well received with parents full of compliments on how their children have mixed, become more creative and jumped out of bed each day to get to camps”. Their tutors also praised the B4K camps. Jonathon Hanley, a teacher in Sacred Heart of Jesus school in Huntstown and one of the summer tutors, had this to say: “Bricks 4 Kidz is a fantastic and worthwhile experience for all children. As a teacher, I have been very impressed with the problemsolving and fine-motor skills children gain from participating in the camp. These skills are vital for children and have a lasting positive impact on a child’s education. I would recommend the camps to anyone looking for a safe, enjoyable and educational opportunity for their child.” Their goals for the coming months are opening their first Creativity Centre in Santry, organising afternoon sessions across the Fingal area, as well as conducting in-school workshops with emphasis on STEM weeks. Local Milkman Looks To The Future Milkmen have been a part of local communities in Ireland for generations. Many people from the North County have vivid memories of the milkman delivering glass bottles by milk float, or even horse and cart if you go further back. However the role of a milkman is still very much alive and thriving today. One such milkman is John Rafferty, who has been delivering milk to the local communities of Malahide, Swords, Kinsealy and Portmarnock for over twenty years. John is the third generation of his family to work in the milk industry, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfa-

Special Olympics Chosen As Aer Lingus Charity Special Olympics Ireland has been chosen as the official charity of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic 2016 between Boston College and Georgia Tech, which takes place on Saturday, September 3rd at 12.30pm in the Aviva Stadium. In celebration of the partnership, one euro will be donated to Special Olympics Ireland for every ticket bought for the game. Ticket prices range €45 to €110 for premium level. There are a number of family tickets (2 adults + 2 children) available from €120, all subject to booking fees via ticketmaster.ie Supporting the announcement, Special Olympics ambassador, Jon Bon Jovi said he was delighted that Special Olympics Ireland has been selected as the official charity, “I have been a supporter of Special Olympics for many years and I have seen the impact throughout the world in terms of driving its message of inclusion and tolerance. It was a real privilege for me to have been a part of the Opening Ceremony of the 2003 Special Olympics World Games and to see at first hand the superb job Special Olympics Ireland do for their athletes and families. I would encourage everyone to support this

great initiative.” Matt English, CEO, Special Olympics Ireland, also commented; “Special Olympics Ireland is thrilled and immensely proud to be selected as the official charity partner of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic between Boston College and Georgia Tech. As a sports organisation first and foremost, we are delighted to be connected with such a prestigious event. Any money raised will be of great help to support the programme of sports and training we currently offer to 9,100 athletes in 360 clubs around the country. It is also very satisfying to be reengaging with legend and Special Olympics Global Ambassador Jon Bon Jovi and Aer Lingus who continue to be our long term travel partner.” Stephen Kavanagh, Aer Lingus Chief Executive, added; “Aer Lingus and Special Olympics Ireland enjoy a long standing partnership since the staging of the Special Olympics World Games in Ireland in 2003. We are very proud of this partnership and it’s fantastic to have our great friends in Special Olympics Ireland come on board as a partner for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.”

the dairy, John worked in a number of departments including packing, machine operation and stock control. After a number of years, John decided to become a milkman and set-up his own milk round. Milkmen live a nocturnal lifestyle as they begin work in the middle of the night when most people are going to bed and they finish their day as the community wakes up to their breakfast.

Speaking about his passion for the job, John told the County Leader, “I grew up watching my father work as a milkman and decided that this was for me. I love the independence of the job and serving the local community. My father and grandfather gave me a great passion for the trade, and it makes me proud to carry on the family business, especially having my son Sean work with me.”

He has seen a number of developments in the industry over the last twenty years, most recently the need for milkmen to provide a traditional milk service with added convenience. The service has experienced a renewal, with people wanting the convenience of having milk, a daily necessity, delivered straight to their doorstep. Milkmen often bring back the nostalgia of the past,

but today’s modern technology brings it into the future. MyMilkman.ie means that customers can change, edit and pause their orders online. There’s also an app available which is ideal for those last minute changes- when you set off on holidays and didn’t manage to catch the milkman, you can log in and pause your order on the go. Now that’s a real leap into the future.

Chamber Corporate Golf Day At Skerries GC The 17th Fingal Dublin Chamber Corporate Golf Day will take place at Skerries Golf Club on Friday, 23rd September, where the teams taking part will compete for the magnificent Chamber Perpetual Golf Trophy, sponsored by the daa. Boasting one of the most spectacular finishing holes in Ireland, it also provides magnificent panoramic views of the Irish Sea and coastline extending from the Mountains of Mourne to Howth.“This is always a very special day out for Chamber Members and their guests with all participants enjoying a great day of golf with colleagues and friends” said Chamber President, Guy Thompson. requires levelling, and for other big garden projects, you may need some professional , local landscapers. If there are only small areas that need levelling, you may be able to just use sand, and allow the lawn time to grow through. If you need to undertake a larger project, it is advisable to employ the services of a good landscaping company, which will lessen your workload and provide a professional service. The North County has some excellent garden centres where staff members will be more than happy to share their expertise on flower suggestions and care. You may decide you want to plant your flowers this summer, so they are ready to sprout next year. Trees and shrubs are good, all year round plants. They still add life to your garden, and are relatively low maintenance. Dress the trees in decorative, clay pots, these will make a great statement piece in your garden. Whatever you decide to do with your home or garden, make sure that it is a space that reflects you and your family to enjoy this summer.

There was great excitement all last week at Malahide Cricket Club, when children from all over Malahide came to enjoy the club’s excellent Summer Camp. This was not the only Summer Camp held at the club this year and it has proven to be a really popular event for everyone. With the recent surge in the popularity of cricket nationwide, this proved to be a great attraction for the children before they embark on their return to school. Children of all ages were taught the basic skills of cricket by coaches from the club, who organised small sided fun games, where everyone had the opportunity to show off their newly acquired skills. Luckily the weather was reasonably good, with Friday being the pick of the days. As always, there was a great atmosphere at Malahide Cricket Club, where there is always a great welcome for visitors. This progressive club is in the process of preparing for the upcoming international match between Pakistan and Ireland, which is sure to be a major attraction
