We Need A Minister!
The election of a new Government last week has been greeted with great relief by the electorate, who have waited for more than two months, since polling day at the end of February.
By Patrick Finnegan A new cabinet was selected. with what many regard as a welcome vibrancy and freshness. However, one glaring omission from a North County viewpoint is the lack of our own Minister. When Dr James Reilly lost his seat at the general election and delicate talks progressing in the aftermath of the election, the thought of such a key constituency being left without a Government Minister was unthinkable. Dublin Fingal is the youngest, fastest growing constituency in the country, and the fact that it is not represented at the

from an industrial, social and tourism strategy point of view. They have submitted their plans to the County Council for input into the Development Plan. The County Leader spoke to Chamber CEO, Sean Corrigan in the Chamber’s newly revamped office on St George’s Square in Balbriggan, where he outlined some of their plans. “The most important thing is that we have been able to pull a significant body of local business people and residential community together in a meeting, which was called by the County Council about two weeks ago.” The local authority issued an invitation in all the local communities
for contributions to the Draft Development Plan. At that meeting, there was limited response from the business community. We formed the opinion that Balbriggan, as a community would not avail of the opportunity afforded by the local authority, which would be a lost opportunity. “It was then that we invited the Council to another meeting and the response was good. We had representatives from various groupings in the town, including sporting and cultural ones. A working group was set up to look at what would help to lift Balbriggan and how it could be included in the next plan (2017-2023). There is a
lot going on, including the new Primary Care Centre, new schools and progress on Bremore Castle. Perhaps the standout project envisaged by the Chamber is the development of Stephenstown Industrial Estate. Corrigan explained, “This is a major opportunity for Balbriggan, as there are not many towns that are sitting right at a junction on a major motorway. When you arrive at junction 6 particularly, there is land available for industry, and the importance of this is that Balbriggan welcomes industry and has the necessary land available. Other towns in the North County don’t have these opportunities, where 200 acres are available on one site alone. About 30 acres of this site are both zoned

He continued, “With this in mind, a group has been formed including members of the County Council, the Chamber and representatives of some larger businesses, who are working on a Marketing Plan, which formed the basis of our own submission. Another inspiration for us was the local authority’s rebranding of the Dublin Enterprise Zone in Blanchardstown. That caused us to look at our own situation, Contd. on page 15

Swords Girl Puts Others First
Leagh McGuirk from Swords is pictured with her hair which was cut for donation to the Rapunzel Foundation
Leagh McGuirk from Swords decided to do something for children who have lost their hair through cancer. She had 12 inches cut off her hair and donated to the Rapunzel Foundation to be turned into wigs for less fortunate girls. She had her hair cut on Thursday, 28th April last at Swords Manor Pub. “I have wanted to do this since I was six years old, but my dad’s best friend’s mum passed away, so I decided to do it now,” said 14 year old Leagh, who lives in Swords Manor estate. “My friends
and school mates are all shocked and they think it’s an unbelievable thing to do. They said I was very brave to do it. It’s strange that I can no longer flick my hair back, but at least my hair will grow back, whereas children with cancer cannot experience that.” So far over €900 has been raised by Leagh for Breast Cancer Research and she hopes that those suffering with cancer, will find some hope through her actions. “I encourage other girls to do the same thing, as it goes a long way to helping others,” said Leagh.

Fhlannagáin’s grandson, TD Eamon Ó’Cuiv, who recalled happy memories of visits to Balbriggan as a young boy. He spoke about his grandmother moving to Edenderry, Co Offaly in 1898, where she was an Irish teacher. This coincided with the centenary of the 1798 Rising and inspired her to join the Gaelic League, where she met her husband-to-be, Eamon de Valera. Eamon Ó’Cuiv spoke about his grandmother as a kind, but steely woman, who like many women at the time kept the home fires burning and whose contribution was just as great as anyone else’s, in the fight fir Irish freedom 100 years ago. “They are like unknown soldiers, who may not have gotten the recognition that more high profile figures got, but it is lovely to see them being recognised in events all over the country, just like today here in Balbriggan,” he said.
Garristown came under attack on Thursday, 28th April last, as the old RIC barracks was raided by a number of suspicious characters on bicycles. Luckily for the crowd assembled, it was just a re-enactment of events on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Ashbourne, the only successful battle of 1916. Hundreds turned out to watch the re-enactment by the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society, where at least 15 “volunteers” in period dress cycled down the Main St on High Nelly bicycles, past the barracks. The barracks was then raided and the constable was interrogated until the “volunteers” were satisfied he was telling them the truth. County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor unveiled two plaques on the buildings that played key roles in the skirmish. He was joined by descendants of those who played a role in 1916. The mayor is a Garristown native and his grandmother, Ita Murray was one of the ladies who administered to the dead and wounded at the Battle of Ashbourne. The “volunteers” marched up the village accompanied by Amy Campbell on the uilleann pipes, and stood to attention in front of the information board which had been erected to remember the events of 1916 in the village. Aoife Tumbleton gave a beautiful rendi-
tion of Grace. Malachy Lawless, a relative of the Lawless family from Saucerstown who were active participants in 1916, read the proclamation. Nicola Ralph, a descendant of Thomas Ashe read his poem “Let me carry your cross for Ireland Lord” and Eileen Neylon who hails from Lispole, the same parish as Thomas Ashe read his only written words of that week. Children from Garristown National School, Daphne Kamau and Thomas White read the new proclamation written by pupils of the school. Eva Cronin and Emma Coughlan played the National Anthem on the violin and the mayor unveiled the information board. The Garristown Historical Society would like to thank all who made the event a success: County Mayor, David O’Connor, Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society, the organising committee of Mary Rice, Carol Cronin, Fiona Nutty, Derek Neylon, Eileen Neylon and Roisín Durham and all other members of the Garristown Historical Society, the “volunteers” on the High Nelly bikes ( including locals Trish Davis, Arlene Moore, Liane Donnelly, Aoife Cronin, Ross Cronin, Richard Durham, Niall Durham, Martin Sheridan, Donal Ennis, and Nicky Byrne), readers and musicians and all who contributed.
On Thursdy, 28th April last, a re-enactment of the taking of the RIC Barracks in Garristown took place, with members of the Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society taking part. The County Mayor, Cllr David O'Connor unveiled a plaque at the old RIC barracks, as well as one at the Post Office and a monument in the centre of the village. Pictured at the event are members of Garristown Historical Society and friends, who dressed up in period costume, Carol Cronin, Derek Neylon, Mary Rice, Ruth Derham, Caoimhe Kennedy and Roisin Durham

Litter Bins May Scupper Swords Tidy Towns Hopes
Maldron Hotel’s Cyclethon For Crumlin Hospital
Swords Tidy Towns have qualified for a new all island competition, including towns from Northern Ireland, as a result of their fine showing in the IBAL report (Irish Businesses Against Litter), where they finished in the top 10.
By Patrick Finnegan This qualified them for a place in the all island competition. The local authority entered them for the competition and Ken Duffy, Secretary of Swords Tidy Towns explained to the County Leader about the preparations currently underway. “As you can see there is a lot of preparation work going on at the moment and we expect the judges to visit the town in the month of May. Hopefully we will do very well, as there is a lot of work with the councillors and even if we get a recommendation, that would be great,” he said. He is also appealing to the various local businesses to come on board and to enter into the Hanging Baskets competition and we would like to see categories introduced, instead of an overall winner. Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) is fully behind the efforts of the Tidy Towns committee, but he has concerns about the siting of unsightly commercial litter bins on Swords Main Street, which he believes will adversely affect the judging. He said, “I want to congratulate Swords Tidy Towns committee, especially Ken Duffy, who has taken up the baton and continues to carry on the great work of the late Des Becton. He has a great team around him, which makes a huge difference,” he said. “However, as I walk through the town, I see more and

more large overflowing bins being left outside business premises and I think this is detrimental to the Tidy Towns efforts in the competition. I am calling on businesses that own these bins to take them out of sight and to play their part in keeping this town tidy and supporting the Tidy Towns. Everyone needs to be aware of their responsibilities and we need people to take these bins in off the street,” he said. “Since I have come on to the Council, I am very conscious of the issues confronting the Tidy Towns group and I have encouraged the Council, like through the flower display last year which was very well received by the public. The Council have done great work in improving Swords. There’s a lot of money being spent on projects like Swords Castle, which will greatly boost tourism for Swords.”

The management and staff of the Maldron Hotel Dublin Airport engaged in a Cyclethon in the Pavilions Shopping Centre all in aid of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. As well as relay cycling, hotel staff provided face painting and balloons for kids. General Manager, Lynn Cawley told the County Leader, “We have been overwhelmed by the support shown to us by the public here at the Pavilions, baby Axel a Crumlin baby was one of the first people to visit our stand this morning. His mother’s story of her baby son’s open heart surgery and the care they both received in Crumlin reaffirmed the team’s commitment to raise funds for the facility,” she said. “Crumlin is our National Children’s Hospital, and while located in Dublin, the hospital treats children from around the entire country. They are currently looking for funds to upgrade their very dated outpatient facilities. It is in this area that the funds we raise will be used and we hope that together we can make a real

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has progressed work on the regulation of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Ireland. This comes after the recent sad and tragic passing of Portuguese fighter, Joao Carvalho at an MMA event in Dublin. The new regulations will have a profound effect on the North County, as plans are afoot to open some MMA outlets here. The Minister proposes the establishment of a National Governing Body for MMA through Sport Ireland, with proposals under discussion. The minister met with representatives of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) and its affiliated body in Ireland. This was with a view to understanding the IMMAF’s perspectives on the issues that Mr. Carvalho’s passing raised. In particular, Minister Ring sought the views of the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) representatives on appropriate measures to safeguard the health of participants in MMA events. The MMA representatives made it clear at the meeting, which was held on Wednesday, 27th April last, that they would welcome a formal process from which a reputable National Governing Body (NGB) for MMA in Ireland would emerge. The NGB would be responsible for setting and overseeing appropriate standards, including standards relating to safety and governance. Subsequent to the meeting, Minster Ring was advised that a meeting of the main MMA stakeholders in Ireland has been scheduled for Tuesday, 17th May, to discuss the establishment of a National Governing Body for MMA in Ireland which would enter into the Sport Ireland NGB recognition process.

Last week saw the Commission recommend that Turkey be given visa-free travel within the EU’s Schengen Area, of which both UK and are Ireland are not members. This concession is in response to President Erdogan’s agreement to revised asylum proposals which will see action by Turkey to prevent onward movement and acceptance of migrants returned to it from the EU. Also the programme provides for redistribution of migrants across the union. The visa-free concession was to be made when Turkey had complied with a menu of reforms set out by the EU. Regrettably not all have been implemented. Activists maintain that by failure to insist on the full reform package, the EU is, in effect abandoning journalists, writers and editors who face harassment and imprisonment should they speak out against the regime. Erdogan is pushing a series of reforms within his country’s own political system, which will see a more Presidential style of administration. As part of that change the more EU friendly Prime Minister has announced that he is to step down from office. The new rules on migration will see a redistribution of asylum applicants from a receiving country when applicants exceed a given number. Any member state which refuses to accept migrants under this process, will be liable to a fine of €250,000 per migrant not accepted. These proposals have yet to be approved by the Parliament. Some on the right are warning that they will insist on full implementation of the reform
package before agreeing to the Visa changes. Further complications may be the concerns of the German By Cathal Boland CDU/CSU who say the change may see the visa-free movement opportunity abused, while the Dutch say that Turkey must complete the whole package of reforms before the concession is made. The Interior Minister in Poland says the migration programme violates the rights of EU States. Fingal Dublin TD, Louise O’Reilly (SF) speaking in the Dáil last week hit out at TTIP (The US/EU Trade deal) citing the dangers she says it represents to the efforts to fight climate change. Ms O’Reilly was speaking after the leaking of sensitive documents relating to the TTIP talks. She said, “Climate change and the quality of our environment will be a central problem demanding a response from policy-makers this century. So why then, when faced with this issue, is the EU engaged in negotiating a deal that will significantly undermine any progress to address climate change?” While the final agreement appears a long way off the debate here in Ireland is sadly lacking in engagement and content. It is to be hoped that over the coming months that open debate platforms will facilitate community engagement in exploring the implications of this important agreement.

from scratch, while some prefer to be tenants and rent. If you are all set to set up your new home, to make this process as smooth as possible, you need to employ the services of professionals, most notably an Estate Agent, Solicitor, Bank or Building Society for your mortgage. In the case of building your own home, you will need to employ the services of a Planner and an Architect. Financially and emotionally, this transaction will have far reaching consequences for you and your family, so it is extra important that you get it right first time. There are so many pitfalls along the way, but employing the services of experts in this field will go a long way to making it a very enjoyable exercise. SOLICITORS So if you’re thinking about buying that dream pad the first thing you need to do is to employ the services of a solicitor. Buying a house is laden with legal pitfalls, which only a solicitor can navi-
gate around. There are many excellent solicitors in the North County, who will help you on your road to that front door you can call your own. It may seem like there is so much involved in buying a home, but once you start the process, it will become clear to you what’s what and you find yourself doing all things that are essential. In buying a new home, you need to visit the Estate Agent in the area you wish to locate to. Many estate agents do a lot more than just sell homes ; they can offer services to you and guide you through the proper financial channels. Set up a meeting with an estate agent and they will talk you through the legalities of owning a home. They will have a wide variety of homes at prices that will suit your budget. Estate agents will search for the house of your dreams, based on the information you provide and they will leave no stone uncovered to ensure that you find that dream home. In choosing a good estate agent, you are getting access to their wide portfolio of houses and they are also in a position to negotiate a good price on your behalf. Employing the services of an estate agent is a must. Estate Agents offer many different packages to suit people and can help you to make the right choices. You will need mortgage
protection on your home and in the North County there are many of these services on offer. You will also need to be up-to-date on how the interest rates work and affect the different types of mortgages. All of this may seem quite daunting, however things unfold once you’re in the process of securing a home. Step by step is the way to do things and when the final day comes for you to collect your key and sign for your home, you will be glad you went through all the channels to own your very own home.
BUDGET You need to carefully budget before considering any property. This involves calculating the funds at your disposal either on deposit or cash, estimating the value of your equity in your existing house. If applicable, getting a quote from a solicitor of the costs involved in purchasing, obtaining approval in principal from a lender-this gives confidence that a
lender will lend a certain amount of money when a property is found. GET MORTGAGE APPROVAL Very few people can buy a home without getting a mortgage. A mortgage is a long-term loan secured against the property you buy. This means if you don’t repay
your mortgage you may lose your home. There are different types of mortgages and different mortgage providers. These typically include banks, building societies and in some cases, credit unions. Luckily there are many excellent financial institutions here in the North County

TENANT'S RIGHTS AND DUTIES The one main difference between buying a home and renting one is that it is compulsory to employ the services of a solicitor when buying a house, but not when renting one. Your local Estate Agent will play a key role for people who want to rent a home. Just like in buying a house, the estate agent in the locality you wish to rent in will have a range of houses to suit your requirements, from budget to location. Once you agree to rent a house or flat, then you have legal rights and duties. These include paying the agreed rent, keeping your place in
order, avoiding damage or nuisance and sticking to any special terms that were decided in your tenant's agreement that could be a written or verbal agreement with your landlord. Your Estate Agent plays a vital role here, where the entire process of renting is handled by them. This includes drawing up a lease, with references and photo ID and your PPS number. Next up is the payment of one month’s rent as well as a deposit, which is the equivalent to one month’s rent. Then the contract is drawn up where the landlord and the tenant both sign it.
Opening Hours: Mon - Friday 9am - 6pm Sat 10am - 5.30pm Sunday: Closed
Further duties performed by the Estate Agent include setting up a Standing Order for payment, or a Rent Book if you decide to pay in cash. You will also be registered with the PRTB (Private Residential Tenancy Board) and the Estate Agent will also transfer the utility bills into the name of the tenant. The landlord will provide a BER Cert which lasts for 10 years and it will show how energy efficient the property is. The Estate Agent or landlord will also deal with whatever issues arise with the tenants, if that is part of the agreement.
The most important things you need to remember are to have respect for your neighbours, to not damage the accommodation and to pay your bills! Remember that if you sign a contract or lease for a certain amount of time, then you're legally committing yourself to paying rent for that time. So don't sign anything unless you‘re comfortable and happy with the conditions! Once you are living in your new home, the landlord is only allowed to enter with your permission. This means that if the landlord wants to do repairs or check the
accommodation, they should arrange a suitable time with you. RENT BOOKS Legally, your landlord must give you a rent book if your rent is paid by cash, or written letting agreement or lease. A lot of landlords don't do this: Make sure you ask for a rent book if you're not being offered one. When you make payments to the landlord, they should be noted in the rent book or by a written statement. The rent book or written agreement should also contain the address of the rented place, the name and address of the land-
lord and agent (if used), the tenant's name (that's you!), the amount of rent due and when/how it should be paid (cheque, cash, etc.), other necessary payments (electricity, gas, phone, TV, etc.), the deposit amount and deposit conditions and info on the basic rights and duties of both you and the landlord. The landlord must also give you a list of all the contents of the flat or house (furniture, electrical stuff, everything!). Make sure that you get this list and that everything on it is in place, this can save you a lot of problems later on. If your landlord refuses to give you a rent book or receipt, keep written records of all payments you make and contact Threshold for advice. A tenant's legal rights and responsibilities are set out in landlord/tenant law as well as from any lease or tenancy agreement between you and your landlord. As a tenant, you are entitled to quiet and exclusive enjoyment of your home, certain minimum standards of accommodation, a new lease for the tenancy and a rent book. It is the obligation of the tenant to provide a certain amount of notice of the termination of your tenancy. In the unfortunate event of disputes, refer these to the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) without being penalised for doing so. If you want to be far from the maddening crowd, you can buy a plot of land and have a house built to your own design and specifications or to a standard design provided by a builder. However building permission is quite difficult to obtain, particularly in certain parts of the country where it’s strictly controlled by the local authorities. In general, building a home in Ireland, or anywhere else for that matter, isn’t recommended for the timid. However, there are many excellent local builders who will build an individually designed house on your plot of land or will sell you a plot and build a house chosen from a range of standard designs. Building your own home allows you not only to design it yourself, but to ensure that the quality of materials and workmanship is first class. Some builders offer ‘package deals’ which include the land and the cost of building a home. However, it isn’t
always wise to buy the building plot from the builder who’s going to build your home, and you should shop around and compare separate land and building costs. If you do decide to buy a package deal from a builder, you should insist
Michael J. Kennedy
on separate contracts for the land and the building, and obtain the title deed for the land before signing a building contract (see below). In most cases, a plot of land is purchased and then a builder is contracted to build a house on it.

Member First Celebrates Credit Union Savers Week Member First Credit Union. which has a branch in Swords, together with Credit Unions across the island, will this week celebrate National Credit Union GR8 Savers Week. The initiative, which runs from 9th – 15th May aims to help young people develop a smart relationship with money and highlights the importance of developing a savings habit. Member First Credit Union runs a school saving scheme in 26 local schools in Coolock, Artane, Swords and the immediate surrounding areas. The scheme aims to encourage young people to start saving regularly from a young age to sow the seeds of good financial management for the future. The credit union offers an annual scholarship fund of €15,000 to all members who are over 16
years of age who are studying or starting college. Most recently Member First Credit Union launched a new innovative loan product called Young & Free aimed at the next generation of Credit Union members. Ambitious Plans For Balbriggan Continued from page 1 and we feel this can be replicated in Stephenstown.” Corrigan feels that, as Balbriggan is situated in the heart of Ireland’s Market Garden, it should be the ideal area for food agri businesses to form a cluster or hub there, with ease of access to the motorway and on to Dublin Airport, Dublin Port and Larne Port for exports. “Visitors to Balbriggan cannot believe how close we are to a major international
airport. It’s just 20 minutes away. We need everyone to come together for this to happen and we have already had discussions with a leading consultant from UCC, who works in the food agri sector, who is of the opinion that if you were to identify a location in Ireland that would be ideal for feeding into the Dublin food market, you couldn’t dream of a better location than Balbriggan. This would attract similar business to locate there,
where there is land, broadband and water – we have it all,” said Corrigan. Other plans of the Chamber includes the town centre, as well as exploiting the tourism potential that Bremore Castle and Ardgillan Castle have to offer. There is also a transport plan to link areas like Stephenstown to the town centre, where workers there can access the town to boost the local economy,” he concluded.
Reilly Happy About Funding For Balbriggan Rugby Club Former Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James is delighted with the allocation of ¤500,000 to Balbriggan Rugby Club for a new clubhouse. Reilly has been very committed to seeking funding for the rugby club for some time. Reilly told the County Leader, “This is great news for Balbriggan Rugby Club and is something I have been advocating for a long time. As a former Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, I am delighted with confirmation that ¤500,000 has been allocated to Balbriggan Rugby Club which will provide for a new clubhouse. It will help children to socialise James Reilly and it’s great to see Balbriggan getting the funding it deserves. During my time as Minister, I have been successful in getting funding for many sports clubs in the area, including GAA, soccer, rugby and the Scout and Guide’s Den in Portmarnock. When asked about the new Primary Care Centre, which he was centrally involved in, as it nears completion, Reilly was very happy. “It is very satisfying to see the best medical care being delivered in such a landmark building. It is a very good counter to the doughnut effect that the town was experiencing, with the drift of business from the town. Balbriggan has long needed a first class medical facility, which will make a huge difference to the local citizens,” he said.

Summer is a wonderful time to get out there and do those niggly jobs that you’ve been putting off all year. The summer hours are longer, and the days are warmer and you may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly just want to make the house more summer friendly. It is possible to change the look of your home on the outside and inside, on just a small budget. Businesses here in the North County have some great summer offers to give you the best bargain, and achieve your summer home on a small budget. So make sure to keep an eye out for some great bargains to make your home and garden into a place that reflects our favourite season.
subtly sweet ones, similar to summer fruits. There’s nothing more relaxing and homely, than a candlelit room and subtle lighting. Colourful candles are in vogue at the moment and they are a great way to add colour, and comfort also. However, be sure to balance out the colour carefully, with the theme of your house. If it is prominently traditional, pastel coloured candles and ornaments will suit better, If however, your living room has a minimalist look, sticking to mainly shaded colours, you may get away with bright, bold colours which add character and dimension to your house this summer.
A LICK OF PAINT LIVING ROOM The living room is the most frequented area in the house, where we chill out and listen to music, watch TV or entertain our friends. It should be the most vibrant, lively room in the house. Decorate it with colourful ornaments adding a summery pop of colour. Candles are key to making houses feel like a home. Buy or replace some candles with some
We all underestimate the power of painting and the transformation it can make to our homes. A lick of paint can give your house a whole new, fresh look. Perhaps you just want to add another coat to the current colour, or go for a new look and change it completely. Now that the summer’s here, it’s all about the light colours. Maybe a nice versatile colour for all seasons would suit.
THE SIDE GATE MAN
GARDEN With summer here at last after a very cold spring, gardens are beginning to recover as growth appears on trees and hedgerows. A well kept garden reflects just how well your house is tended. After all, the garden is the first thing visitors see when they come to your home. A poorly tended garden is normally a sign that your home isn’t much better. Gardens are high maintenance at this time of year, so we need to get our
gardens summer friendly. Freshen it up just by simply pulling out a few weeds from the paving and flower beds. Gardening is a good excuse to spend some time out in the sun. Sprinkle some grass seeds onto the lawn, this will layer it with a fresh coat, making the lawn look a whole lot healthier. Take this time to decide if your lawn requires levelling, and for other big garden projects, you may need some professional , local landscapers. If there are only small areas
that need levelling, you may be able to just use sand, and allow the lawn time to grow through. If you need to undertake a larger project, it is advisable to employ the services of a good landscaping company, which will lessen your workload and provide a professional service. The North County has some excellent garden centres where staff members will be more than happy to share their expertise on flower suggestions and care. You may decide you want to plant your flowers this summer, so they are ready to sprout next year. Trees and shrubs are good, all year round plants. They still add life to your garden, and are relatively low maintenance. Dress the trees in decorative, clay pots, these will make a great statement piece in your garden. Whatever you decide to do with your home or garden, make sure that it is a space that reflects you and your family to enjoy this summer.

Sunday April 24th saw the County Council’s Centenary Commemorations flagship event happening in Swords Castle. The event drew a delighted crowd of locals, visitors and tourists. As with any good outdoor event, the set up has to be meticulous and the clean up the next day a long and arduous task. Monday morning saw a dedicated clean up crew from the Fingal County Council, out from early, deconstructing stages, lighting rigs and sound systems and cleaning up the area. All traces of the celebrations had been cleared away by lunch time on Monday. Speaking to the County Leader about the processes of both the set up and the dismantling of the event, Paul Barnes, Senior Staff Officer for Events with the Fingal County County Council
said; “We directly manage all aspects of the event but we do bring in outside experts for some
By Aoife Read elements of the build. For example, we don’t build the seating structures we bring in a company to do that. So with the help of some external companies, those seating structures and the build for the 1916 centenary event began on Friday. In our mind is, if we start an early build it reduces the impact on park users etc.” “We did the big stuff on Friday, and on Sunday morning the rest of the stuff got built, so the 450 seats, and we did the main street in two blocks. Then there was the towers for the video cameras the temporary televisions and big screens, crowd control barriers, and we have
our own operations crew who came in and literally did a sweep before the event just to make sure the place was fit for purpose,” he said. “It took two days to build the Fireworks display. Obviously with stuff like that safety is our primary concern, so we had about 40 stewards there to assist with road closures and keeping citizens and spectators safe around the time of the display. So that’s really an idea of the amount of work that goes into the set up of an event like that,” he added. He went on to say; “When it comes to deconstruction we have to be just as meticulous. On Sunday evening the fireworks began at 9.40pm, they went on for 15 minutes and everyone was out of the park about 10 minutes after that. We
were able to start deconstructing the park from about 10pm. Out on the Main Street we had traffic back moving by 9pm. Mostly, everything went on Sunday night, and by Monday lunchtime the castle was totally clear. They are dedicated and hard workers.” Barnes concluded by saying; “An interesting thing that we did as well was we had a drone fly overhead and take a video of the event. As I said, safety is paramount so that was all organised properly through the Irish Aviation Association. We had a proper licence and all regulations were met. Given the proximity to Dublin airport even the daa were told that this was happening. The video the drone took can be found on the Fingal County Council website. We are very proud of it.”

Department Of Health ‘Robbing Peter To Pay Paul’ Local Sinn FĂŠin TD, Louise O’Reilly has accused the Department of Health and the HSE of attempting to rob Peter to pay Paul, after it was revealed that money supposedly ring-fenced for mental health was planned to be spent in other areas. Deputy O’Reilly is calling on new on Minister for Health Simon Harris to make a statement on the matter. Speaking to the County Leader Deputy O’Reilly said; “This would appear to be a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul and it highlights the chronic state of our health services and the disregard for mental health services within the department.â€? “We cannot have a situation where the health services are so starved of funding that mental health has to compete with other areas for funding,â€? she said. She went on to say; “Mental health services cannot be the poor relation of our other health services. Funding for this very important area is supposed to be ring-fenced and rightly so. It should not be up for negotiation.â€? “The caretaker Minister for Health should make a statement on this matter making it clear that funding allocated for mental health will be spent on mental health,â€? concluded O’Reilly.
TrĂłcaire Says Thank You TrĂłcaire has thanked the people of the North County for their generosity in helping to raise over â‚Ź1 million for the Nepal earthquake appeal on the first anniversary of the 7.8 earthquake that struck on Saturday, 25th April 2015.A year ago , at least 8,700 people were killed and more than half a million homes were destroyed in the worst earthquake to hit Nepal for 81 years. Major cities, including the capital Kathmandu, were badly damaged, while in rural areas near the epicentre, 90 per cent of people lost their homes and were left without food. Speaking to the County Leader, TrĂłcaire’s Executive Director, Eamonn Meehan said; “The fund-raising efforts of local communities and the kindness of individuals from North County Dublin meant that TrĂłcaire was able to
rapidly provide lifesaving aid after the earthquake.â€? H e went on to say; “People all over Ireland contributed over â‚Ź1m to our emergency appeal. I would like to thank people in Dublin for playing their part. Thanks to their generosity, TrĂłcaire and our UK partner, CAFOD, reached 300,000 people with vital aid such as food, blankets, tarpaulins, cooking utensils, beds, solar lamps and gas stoves. We are continuing to support water and sanitation initiatives and are helping people to rebuild their livelihoods and earn an income.â€? He concluded by saying; “The tremendous efforts of people across Ireland has allowed us to get shelter, water and other aid to people who lost everything when the earthquake struck. This support will be felt in Nepal for years to come.â€?

There’s no doubt about it that your pet is a true member of the family. Your furry or not-so-furry friend makes for a w o n d e r f u l companion, but there’s no doubt about it; each pet, whether it be a cat, dog, rabbit, gerbil or a slightly more exotic creature, needs real care and attention.

HOUSING
EXERCISE The majority of your pets will need a good dose of daily exercise, so it’s essential to make sure that a member of the family or someone you know and trust will be on hand to make sure that they get it. Dogs in particular require a great deal of this, so it is essential for their health that they are walked every day. Some animals require less exercise than others, so it’s important to know the amount your pet will need from the get go. The North County has many dog walkers for example that you can hire if you know you’ll be out working during the day.

nutrition when it comes to the food that they eat. If your pet becomes unwell after eating a certain type of food that may not agree with him, check the packet and take note of the ingredients so you know to steer clear of these in the future. Avoid foods that are heavy in additives and be aware of any allergies your pet might have, and if you’re unsure what type or kind of food your pet should eat, ask your vet. Remember that your pet is an animal and must be provided with the appropriate food, not human food. On the subject of vets, be sure to take your pet dog when it is still a pup
to get its first injections, de-wormed and then a booster shot each year. It’s now compulsory to micro chip and perhaps neuter your pet, especially if you’re not planning to breed them (this also prevents them from developing many diseases). It is also important to never self-diagnose your pet’s illness or attempt to give them any form of tablets (this is toxic). If your pet is unwell, take them to see a qualified professional. Luckily there are many top class professionals in the North County, who can assess your pet and ensure that they are given appropriate food for their species and size.
you’ll want to make sure that this is the right size, kept clean and dry and is maintained regularly so that your pet is as comfortable as possible in its little home. If you’re going out for the afternoon, make sure to leave out food and water for your pet beside its little house. Your pet is a precious member of your family, that can provide hours of enjoyment, so it must be afforded the proper respect, just like any other family member.
ESTUARY KENNELS GROOMING Just as important as their health and exercise is their general grooming. So things like maintaining their coat length, clipping their paw nails and dental and eye care health all need to be taken care of as needed. Some pets need to

It was a very special occasion for new Parish Priest of Lusk, Fr Eoin McCrystal who conducted the ceremonies on both days. It was his first time to officiate at a Confirmation ceremony in the parish. He was full of praise for the teachers and parents alike, who put in great work in preparing the children for this great day in their young lives. The day was one of great excitement for the children and their parents, which was made even better by the good weather on both days. After posing for photographs, both inside and outside the Church, the children and their families and friends all returned to Lusk National School on both days, where there was some very welcome light refreshments for all.

Being next to Malahide train station, the point where so many people arrive in Malahide, makes this site highly accessible. Renovations include new flooring, a replacement ceiling, the removal of desks currently situated in some window areas to allow natural light in and a new look to the front of Terminal 1. When completed, the Arrivals Hall will be brighter, more spacious and modern. All restaurants will be located in one area while services such as the Tourist Information Office, Bus, Travel and the Information Desk will be grouped together making the floor layout more user friendly and intuitive for customers. Dublin Airport’s Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said the Arrivals Hall will look very different. “We are upgrading Terminal 1 on a phased basis and we have already enhanced the Departures Floor. We are now turning our attention to the Arrivals Hall. Our goal is to greatly improve the overall look and feel for our customers,” he said. Floor replacement is underway and hoarding will be in place around different areas of the Arrivals Hall until the
project is complete in the coming months. “The Arrivals Hall is synonymous with happy and emotional scenes at Dublin Airport. We are confident that, when completed, the renovations will significantly enhance the ambience in that area,” Mr Harrison added. Screens currently positioned in front of the Arrivals Hall exit doors will be removed so that customers meeting and
greeting friends and family will have an unobstructed view as they come through from the baggage hall.
