Hero Of The Hour There was a great sense of occasion in Rush last week, with the unveiling of a public work of art in the form of statues, depicting the rich maritime tradition of the town. The artwork is called, Men of the Sea and it is located at Echlin Court in the centre of the town. It depicts five legendary characters associated with Rush. However, it was local boy, Stephen Boyle who was the real hero of the day. Stephen, aged seven, is a pupil of Rush National School, and his interest in the project was aroused, when he discovered that one of the five characters in the artwork is a hero of his. Luke Ryan was a notorious pirate and privateer, who terrorised ships around the coast in the 18th century. He was eventually employed by Benjamin Franklin during the American War of Independence, to wreak havoc on British ships in the Irish Sea. Stephen told the County Leader, “I have a great interest in Luke Ryan, ever since my granddad told

By Patrick Finnegan me about him and, when I heard that Luke Ryan’s statue was to be included in the artwork, I decided to write a letter to the Irish Navy and the American Ambassador, saying that someone important should be present when the new statue of Captain Luke Ryan is being unveiled. I also attached the story of Luke with the letters. The American Embassy wrote back to me, but politely said that they would be too busy with the President Obama visit,” said Stephen. However, all was not lost for this tenacious young boy, as the Irish Navy sent a representative to the unveiling. Lieutenant Elizabeth Barrett, who is a native of nearby Skerries was very impressed with Stephen and said, “It’s lovely to see different generations from the locality with a passion for life at sea and this proud tradition being carried on. One of the principal roles of the Irish Navy is fishing protection, so it’s appropriate that we are represented here,” she said. Stephen was the real hero of the day and his enthusiasm was infectious. He was praised by all present and his enthusiasm is widely regarded as giving the whole project the momentum it needed. His entire family were present at the

unveiling and his father, Eoin was gushing in his praise for his son. He told the County Leader, “We’re really proud of Stephen. He’s a real go getter and is very bright. He has proven that anything is possible, when you put your mind to it. He has a huge interest in local history and when he heard the statues were to be unveiled, he felt the American Navy should be present,” said a proud Eoin. When asked how it feels to be in the spotlight, chirpy Stephen said, “It feels great that I’m getting all the attention. Miss McMonagle, my teacher is delighted with what I’ve done,” said a delighted

Stephen. Other characters depicted in the statues include Jack the Batchelor, the famous smuggler, a French Crusader, who is believed to have built the first church in Rush, a Roman soldier, in reference to Roman coins found nearby, St Maur, patron saint of seafarers and long associated with Rush and of course, Luke Ryan.

Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has put up a sterling argument to Taoiseach, Enda Kenny about the abolition of the Seanad. In welcoming the Taoiseach to the Seanad, O’Brien, who is Fianna Fail leader in the House, made sure to mention that it was only Mr Kenny’s second visit to this House in the two and a half years since he assumed office. He said, “I respect the Taoiseach and his office, but I expect the Taoiseach to respect the Oireachtas, as elected. I put it to him that the fact that he has only once, prior to this day, attended the Chamber in his tenure shows he does not fully respect the Oireachtas, as it is currently constituted and this is concerning.” “I can inform the Taoiseach from talking to people where I live, here in North County

and enquired about the additional funding, which he says will be of great benefit to the town. The County Council informed Farrell that work on the Rush Main Street was originally due be carried out in 2014, but thanks to the additional allocation of funding, work will be completed by the end of this year. Farrell welcomed the news, and said the restoration would give the main street a lift. He told the County Leader. “It’s fantastic to hear that Rush Main Street will be improved. I always welcome any improvements that can be made to the town. The Council have confirmed that a surface restoration project of approximately 500 metres will be completed on the main street by the last quarter of this year.” This will no doubt benefit everyone, but will be particularly welcomed by the local Tidy Towns group, who tirelessly work to ensure the town looks its best, and who would be very much aware of the effect that eye sores around the town can have on their scoring in the competition. The restoration will enhance the already charming main street.

Friday last, 28th June was a bitter sweet day for the residents of Fancourt Heights in Balbriggan. It was the day when Lily Faulkner, the local popular school traffic warden, or lollipop lady as it’s affection-

ately known, decided to call it a day. Lily, who lives in Fancourt Heights, has been an ever-present school warden at the dangerous junction of Fancourt Heights and Skerries Road for the past 32 years. In that time, she has guided schoolchildren safely across the road, and has built up a relationship with many of them over the years. Her popularity was evident by the turnout of neighbours, who turned out in force to bid her farewell, amid emotional scenes. It was a genuine surprise for Lily, as her family and neighbours held a surprise party for her when she turned up for work for

the last time. They brought chocolates, sweets and cakes for the occasion. Lily, whose children and grandchildren were there to bid her farewell told the County Leader, “ I started work on 4th June 1981 and I have mixed feelings about today. I am very lucky to have been blessed with good health and I thank God for that. I have wonderful neighbours and children. Thankfully, there has never been an accident during my time here,” she said. When asked if she had any plans for her retirement, Lily replied that she had no immediate plans.

New Pay And Display Area For Swords

Call For Overgrown Pathway To Be Cut Back

Work has commenced on repairing the potholed roadway at Forster’s Way in Swords. The works, which commenced on Monday, 1st July are due to be completed by 5th July. These works are in preparation for the construction of a privately run Pay and Display car park, to replace the free parking, which was available to motorists. Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has welcomed the fact that the potholes will be repaired, but is Ken Duffy is pictured at the overgrown pathway near the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords, which is used by people accessing the bus stop.

New Alzheimer Centre Opens In Balbriggan Local councillor, Darragh Butler is pictured at the car park on Forsters Way in Swords, which is to be repaired and turned into a private Pay and Display.

concerned that the new Pay and Display area will drive motorists into neighbouring housing estates. He told the County Leader, “It’s about time the potholes were repaired, as it’s chaotic all day long here. The County Council should make their car park at Seatown Road available to the public free of charge, while the construction of the Pay and Display area is underway. My concern is that when the car park is closed, it will drive cars into neighbouring estate to get free parking. Local residents are also concerned about this, so hopefully, it will be completed promptly and on time. I believe that the summer months represent a good time to do this, when it should be quieter, but most likely there will be additional parking problems in Swords, as a result. The benefit however, is that this particular eyesore in Swords will be gone when the work is completed,” he concluded.

Random Drug Testing At IAA All office workers at the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), are to be subjected to random drug and alcohol testing, in spite of union objections. This follows a binding Labour Court ruling that the IAA’s protocol on random testing for alcohol and drugs had been properly agreed between the IAA and its staff panel. The unions had argued that, unlike air traffic controllers, their desk-bound members were not engaged in safety critical roles and so should not be subject to random testing.

Local Green Party hopeful in the upcoming local elections, Ken Duffy has lashed out at the County Council for failing to maintain a pathway that is used by people accessing a busy bus stop in Swords. The overgrown path connects the Pavilions Shopping Centre with the bus stop for people travelling north to Skerries and Balbriggan, and is regarded as a hazard for users. Duffy told the County Leader, “This is a real problem for people getting to the northbound bus stop. People can no longer safely navigate their way along this path.” “The opposite side of the road was simi-

larly overgrown, but after submissions made by me, they restored it to where it is now passable. People using buggies cannot get to the bus stop, simply because the pathway practically disappears into the undergrowth. Another problem is that, in wet weather, path users will be drenched to the skin.” Duffy also emphasised other hazards associated with the area. “Because of it’s overgrown condition, the path is becoming a haven for anti-social behaviour and many locals have contacted me saying they are fearful of being attacked there,” he concluded.

Positive News For Local Libraries 39, DUBLIN STREET, BALBRIGGAN • TEL: 01 6904690 27/06/13 Dear Sue I just wanted to write to tell you how delighted both Ken and I are, with the response from North County Leader. Since opening the business, we have been so pleased with the consistent level of response from your readers which has come from not only Balbriggan but also Rush and Swords. We also noticed, with the offer we ran in our last advert, that the paper came out on Tuesday morning and we started to get enquiries and orders in the afternoon.

Cuts to library hours in Balbriggan and Rush are set to remain for the summer months, but council management say there is encouraging evidence that resources will be available to restore at least some of those opening hours in the autumn. Local Labour councillors Ciaran Byrne, Ken Farrell and Peter Coyle, now retired, instructed county management to look at the issue again, taking the unusual step Cllr. Byrne of passing a ‘Section 140’ motion, calling for the controversial cuts in opening hours to be reviewed. Following meetings between council officials and the elected members, there now seems to be some optimism that the cuts will not be as severe as first announced, although they will remain in place for the summer months. Making a statement on the issue at a recent council meeting, County Manager, David

O’Connor, said that councillors had been briefed in a “detailed and genuinely open manner” on the staffing and resource issues at the heart of the controversial decision to cut back hours in the libraries in Balbriggan and Rush. He said the outcome was “not yet certain,” but signs were encouraging that the Council might prove successful in implementing less severe cuts and be able to prevent further reductions of the service into the future. The results of those efforts would be more clear in September, he said but in the meantime, the opening hours of the affected libraries would go ahead for the summer months. Cllr Byrne told the County Leader that while it was regrettable that hours would be reduced during the summer months, he was positive about news for the autumn: “I accept the Manager’s good will at this time, in anticipation of a substantial restoration of library hours in the Autumn.”

Harford welcomed this news and said she would continue to press this matter with the local authority in the coming weeks.

North County Living by Jennifer McShane

Summer is a great time for relaxation, recreation and renewal. If you’re like most of us, you probably take advantage of the longer days and warm weather to enjoy extra time with family and friends. While enjoying the hot, lazy days of summer, keep in mind that different beauty rules apply. Here at the County

A Life Changing Donation Colin White, based in Balbriggan, is this week’s North County Living candidate. He has had an extremely varied and rewarding career, and currently serves as the National Project Manager for the Irish Kidney Association (IKA), which he says is not a job, but rather a way of life. Colin’s role as National Projects Manager for the Irish Kidney Association means he also captains the Irish Transplant Team, which will be competing in the World Transplant Games in South Africa in a month’s time. He says he cannot speak highly enough of the participants, and also those who donate their organs so that the participants can survive and live fulfilling lives. "It's a profound experience witnessing those that have had a transplant turn their lives around and compete in the transplant games," he said. "To know that they have survived because of the generosity of a total stranger is really an incredible thing to comprehend." Colin came to Balbriggan in 2001, after teaching in Africa for a number of years for very personal reasons. "Myself and my wife had planned to stay in Africa permanently, when she suddenly became very ill. We were told that my wife had to go on Dialysis immediately and had to come back to Ireland to seek treatment." This is how Colin first came into contact with the Irish Kidney Association. "We basically came back with no real idea of what to do, and a friend put us in touch with the association, and within 24 hours, my wife was in Beaumont starting treatment, so we were immensely grateful to them. This meant that I saw very early on the fantastic work they did." Before his involvement in the sports sector with the IKA, he started out his career as a teacher in Botswana and then, Zimbabwe in Africa. "I actually started out with relatively no experience in sport, though I always had an interest in it. I studied over in the UK in economics and politics and after working for a year in Belgium, I went back and did a post grad in teaching and then ended up over in South Africa as a maths teacher." He then went on to become head of business studies and sport development at a particular school, working with students with physical disabilities. "When I started coaching sport in schools, what I was also looking to gain was the motivation to get out there and participate in sports myself, because I knew that if I was going to get out there and teach the kids, I would have to get out there and do it too." Colin, who had never taught sport with children with varied mobility levels before, said it was an interesting challenge to take on. "Everything was just different in comparison to here, for example. Usually there would be all sorts of rules and regulations, but we very much were just left to really get stuck in and create a sports programme that the children could really be proud of." He went to the Irish Wheelchair Association for some pointers

Newsworthiness:

SUMMER HAIR CARE If you spend lots of time outdoors and want to spice up your look naturally, try combing a little

lemon juice through your hair. The sun will lighten those strands faster than your locks sans lemon, giving you an attractive sun-streaked look. It’s also easier on your budget than those expensive highlights. Be sure to deep condition your hair at least once a week, especially if you swim a lot. Hair tends to become

Raheny Dental Centre because he wanted to get everything right, and some unique advice afterwards really helped him to see things differently. "My boss basically said, right take one of the sports wheelchairs and sit in it for the next week, and this gave me an insight into what's involved for each person and where their strengths were going to be." "It was then that I really saw the power of sport as a social tool," he continued. "It really reflected so well in my classroom, there was a stronger bond between us and I knew then that was the aspect I really loved about the whole thing." Some time later, when he was working in Zimbabwe, he was invited to be a co-ordinator in the 10th Paralympic Games. "It was very much back to basics when we were co-ordinating the games, we really had to simplify things and start the whole process over, but it was a fantastic experience, and gave me great grounding when the transplant games came around." He recalls a particular experience at the US Transplant Games five years ago, where he was a volunteer athletics coach: "I realised that a few participants that were going to do the Shot Putt had never actually done it before and were just going to give it a go (which I thought was fantastic), so I offered to give them a lesson. A young lady who was blind came up to me and said she also wanted to do it and I thought it was brilliant. I was being purely challenged as a coach to focus on the individual, not the sport, it gave me a unique insight into coaching." When he came back to Ireland in 2001, he worked with Prosper Fingal for a number of years, which he says was a hugely rewarding job, before going to work full time with the IKA as the National Project Manager. He can't speak highly enough of the IKA, who he says have been a phenomenal support to himself and his wife. "They have made my work so easy and are completely supportive of not only us, but anyone who comes to them. We obviously joined when my wife became ill, and some time later I was asked to come in and beef up the sports programme and that's how I became involved with the transplant games amongst other things." "The sports played at the games are very much like the sports at the Olympic games, only the range of abilities differs," he explained. "The participants are just phenomenal, and see the games as their way of showing their appreciation to their donors for giving them a new lease of life. I think to know the fact that a total stranger has saved their life is almost impossible to comprehend and they want to give something back, and they have this amazing, palpable appreciation for life." Colin says that anyone thinking of becoming a donor can contact the IKA and download an app, which allows them to fill in all their details. "I could never see myself doing anything else, my work is not a job to me, but is my way of life," he concluded.

"The participants are phenomenal. They see the games as their way of showing their appreciation."

dry, dull and brittle if it is soaked and dried too often. Try washing your hair less often; shampooing your hair strips the moisture out of your hair. Avoid hair products with formaldehyde or alcohol in it, which can dry out hair. Instead try to use natural products that are gentler on your hair. If you know you are going to be in the sun for a long time and if you don’t want to wear anything on your head, use a leave in conditioner with sunscreen in it before you go out.

SKINCARE TIPS It may be hip to be tanned, and it does tend to camouflage a multitude of imperfections, but don’t deep-fry your skin for the sake of fashion. Your best bet is a high quality bronzer in a bottle. The Body Shop has a great allnatural formula. Just remember to use a facial scrub prior to application to slough off any dead skin cells. You may also want to use a pair of gloves, lest your palms turn orange! If you spend lots of time outside, be sure to use sunscreen with minimum SPF 15. The cancer-preventing benefits are obvious, but protection is also a must for those of us who don’t want to look old before our time. If you do burn, apply Aloe Vera or lotions containing it. This will cool and soothe your skin and help you to heal faster.

Brave Rush Locals Shave Heads For Charity Jess Coffey from Rush proudly shaved her head in aid of Temple Street Children’s University Hospital On Saturday, 22nd June in St. Maur’s GAA Club. On the night, she was joined by fellow locals, Derek Coffey and James Smith who also braved the bald look for the charity with Derek going the extra mile by getting his chest waxed. At the end of it all, they raised a fantastic €3,100 for the children of Temple Street. Jess told the County Leader about the event: “I’ve had the chance to meet some of the amazingly brave and beautiful children that this wonderful hospital cares for. These little kids don’t have a choice about being sick, having surgery, battling through cancer treatment - I think it is the very least I can do to lose something as inanimate as my hair to help raise vital

funds on their behalf. These children are my inspiration, they get dealt such terrible cards but yet they still have a smile on their little faces. I want to be that strong!” Jess along with her father, two uncles and family friend travelled “Route 66” on motorbikes in aid of Temple Street last year. Route 66 is the Mother Road that crosses from Illinois to California, passing through many beautiful states on its way. It is her goal to travel along the iconic highway again in September 2014. “I loved every second of the trip, we met amazing people and got to see some spectacular places. I can’t wait to go back,” she continued. But while we are away the little children in Temple Street are never far from our thoughts – they are the reason we are there.” Temple Street Children’s Hospital has a special place in the Coffey family’s hearts and they feel very honoured to be able to give back to this wonderful place.

Coastguard Launches Wristband Campaign Imagine the horror of losing a child on a busy beach and not knowing where they are, or if they had strayed off into the water. These are things that can easily happen. Well now, the Irish Coastguard has launched a summer water safety campaign designed to protect children on beaches and near coastlines. The Coastguard is distributing thousands of free waterproof wristbands under the ‘Give us a Hand’ campaign. Parents or guardians can write their phone numbers on the wristband, so that lifeguards, emergency services or members of the public can contact the child’s parents if the child

becomes lost or becomes separated. The wristbands have been made available to Irish Coastguard Volunteer Units for distribution through schools, lifeguard stations and maritime community events around the country The wristbands carry a message reminding the public to call 112 and ask for the Coastguard for beach, water or cliff emergencies. The wristband concept is very simple: it’s made of water resistant Tyvek material which is strong and difficult to tear. The bands were designed and developed free of charge by Coast Guard volunteers and are a practical, simple way to

assist families. This is the latest stage in the Coastguard’s summer safety campaign which began in May this year and is

aimed at holidaymakers, those engaged in water sports, people enjoying cliff walks or engaging in coastal activities throughout Ireland.

At the end of a long year looking after children or getting up at ungodly hours to take our place in traffic gridlock on our way to work, the thoughts of a relaxing short break or holiday is music to our ears. Here in Ireland, we are very fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, where hospitality and great food and wine are taken for granted. We regard ourselves as the land of the thousand welcomes, so why not sample it for ourselves. As Ireland is a small country and the network of roads has increased dramatically over the Celtic Tiger era, nowhere is more that two or three hours from Dublin. Family breaks are becoming more and more popular with families here in the North County. Families, who traditionally had a sun holiday, are now waking up to the fact that we have a wonderful country on our doorstep. There’s no need to queue at an ungodly hour of the morning at the airport and then face the possibility of extra baggage charge, while hoping that the fog outside will soon clear. All you need to do is to get into your car and enjoy our great road network, stopping off along the way for refreshments, while you get to your destination at your ease. While the recession has had a devastating effect on our economy, the old saying, “It’s an ill wind that doesn’t blow some good” is very apt where great value is concerned. Ireland is blessed with some fabulous scenery, golf courses and beaches to make any holiday one to remember. With this in mind, a family break to one of our fabulous hotels is always well worthwhile in terms of value, entertainment and excellent food. Many of these hotels provide wonderful value, with top class service all designed with your comfort in mind. There’s no better way to enjoy the scenery and culture that our country has to offer. Many of these hotels will offer activity holidays, where you can avail of golf, fishing, painting, cookery classes and boating to mention just a few. Our excellent road and rail

network means that access is now easy and within hours, you are at your destination and ready to be entertained.

Ireland’s rich tradition of hospitality means that you are never far away from a pub playing traditional music or perhaps

a museum, where you can enjoy artefacts of our past. Hotels will also organise day trips and if it’s located in a fishing area, a ghillie can be arranged. Walking trips are also very popular, and there’s nothing better than joining in with the singing in a traditional Irish pub. Many fine restaurants will provide the finest local cuisine at great value. So whatever you need for a great breakaway, Ireland has something for everyone.

Choral Combinations In Balbriggan On Monday, 17th June, the community of Balbriggan were treated to a combined performance of the Robert Sharon Chorale all the way from Florida, USA and the local Fingal Chamber Choir. The concert was held in the tranquil surroundings of St George’s Church in Balbriggan and all proceeds were donated to Pieta House, whose volunteers are dedicated to educating on the subject of suicide prevention. The evening started with the visiting choir singing an

enchanting cantata, followed by a rousing rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’. They then proceeded to captivate the audience with traditional choral pieces, including two sung in Hebrew. It was then the turn of the Fingal Chamber Choir, directed by David Maxwell, to take over and they started with an upbeat arrangement of ‘The Bear Necessities’ of The Jungle Book fame and then proceeded into a more traditional repertoire including ‘Ag Criost an Siol’ by the Seán O’Riada. Local resident Samantha Walker commented: “With such beautiful music and voices it was hard not to get lost in the evening.” The congregation and clergy of St George’s are to be thanked for inviting the community into their precious church, which coincidentally celebrates the bicentenary anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone this year.

In the past number of years, it has become fashionable to use our outdoor space, normally our gardens to entertain people. As we are now in what can be called a reasonably good summer, barbecues are the norm, particularly at the weekends. Many of us envy our European neighbours, where al fresco living is the norm. They seldom use the indoors and enjoy nature at it’s best, due to guaranteed sunshine. There is nothing as nice as the smell of a barbecue

wafting through the evening air on a sultry summer evening. The accompanying noise of people laughing and joking and having a good time among family and friends fills the air. Oh the joys of summer. However, we Irish are a resilient lot and, while we cannot guarantee wall to wall sunshine, we certainly know how best to make the most of our sometimes, all too brief summers. To get ready for the outbreak of sunshine, our gardens are decked out with garden furniture, complete with table, chairs, loungers, barbecues (some of which are in-built permanent structures), where we entertain our family and friends. Many of us decide to transform our garden space specially for the summer. The garden has become an outdoor room, where small accidents, like spillages can occur, without causing too much of a fuss, unlike indoors. Garden decking is becoming very popular and patio areas lend themselves to easy al fresco entertaining. Swings, hammocks, specially laid out patio areas are now becoming the norm in gardens across the North County. What could be better than relaxing outside, lighting the barbecue and pouring a cold, iced drink. All of this is even more enjoyable if you can appreciate the those long lazy summer days, with the finest garden furniture, which can be easily stored away for the winter and used the following year. It is a worthwhile investment and one that you will use regularly. Garden parasols are also part of the furniture, and play an important role in ensuring that you are protected from the harmful rays of the sun. To further enhance the atmosphere of al fresco living, garden lighting is a must. As the balmy summer evenings come to an end, garden lighting adds a new dimension to the occasion. We are lucky here in the North County to have many excellent landscaping companies that can transform your outdoor space into a most desirable area that will be used on a regular basis, depending on the weather. Indeed some people clear the weather obstacle by having a marquee area in their gardens, which ensures all summer long entertainment.

Plumbing It is vitally important to make sure that plumbling in your home is up to scratch. This covers the inevitable water leaks that occur from time to time and which can

destroy a home in a whisker. It’s important to know a good plumber and have his phone number convenient. He will also look after your heating needs and now is a good time to ensure that your home is ready for the upcoming winter season. Make sure to have your boiler serviced, as this will save you money down the road.

DAA Hair-A-Thon Raises €2,000

Fingal Probus Club Seeks Members

DAA has hosted a charity hair-a-thon event recently, raising €2,000 for the DAA charities – Make A Wish Ireland, Down Syndrome Ireland and Bee For Battens. The event took place over two days at Terminal 2 and was well supported by airport employees and passengers alike who could receive a barbers cut or ladies treated themselves to a cut and blowdry by expert hairstylists. The Grafton Barber staff, who kindly volunteered their time for the event, said the barbers chair was seldom empty once people got word of the event. “Our first customer was a chap who had a three hour delay to Florida and we welcomed two young men who were heading off on the Lions Tour were happy to get their hair cut for their trip in support of the event.” The hair-a-thon event is one of many events taking place this year to support the DAA charities including 20 ladies who took part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon raising over €2,000. The Dublin Airport Police and Fire Service rowing club are currently undertaking their latest charity challenge this week to navigate the full length of the River Shannon.

The Probus Club is a club specifically designed for retired professional and business people. They are always keen to have new members join and all you have to do is come along to the meetings on the first or third Wednesday of the month to the Harp Lounge in the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords at 11am. The club is very actively involved in charity work for St Francis Hospice in Raheny and other charities. A typical year’s programme involves talks on specialised subjects or matters of current interests and also visits to places of scenic and/or historic interest. The club provides the ideal platform for those who would appreciate and value increased social contacts in their retirement and the opportunity of meeting others in similar circumstances.

Conor explained that the Malahide/ Portmarnock “Road to Rio” in conjunction with Swords Pavilions will take place in Broomfield
