What A Weekend! Residents of the North County have just enjoyed one of the most successful and enjoyable weekends for many a long day, with good weather adding to the enjoyment of all. Festivals were held at Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan as well as Swords Summer Festival and the annual ‘Malahide Has It’ festival. All events were enjoyed in excellent weather conditions, which added to the occasions. Millfield Shopping Centre kicked off the fun on Friday afternoon last with many local families enjoying the great programme of family fun events offering of entertainment and food. Nationalities from all over the world displayed their cuisine and talents to entertain and feed adults and children. Among the offerings were African drummers alongside Irish dancers with a multi cultural fashion show drawing great interest from people who combined doing their shopping with a taste of exotic foods and entertainment. Friday evening saw the start of both the Swords Summer Festival and the ‘Malahide Has It’ festival. This was the second year of the Swords festival, organised by the County Council, and the general consensus was that it was an outstanding success. On Saturday Swords main street was closed to traffic as families enjoyed the musical entertainment and sampled food and drink from local hostelries. Then it was off to Swords Town Park, where the entertainment, particularly for children was outstanding and went down very well. Music filled the air in the garden area, with Chandelier Sessions providing the entertainment. Then on Sunday morning, County Mayor Darragh Butler
and Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid were among a record crowd of 3,800 runners who participated in the Fingal 10K run. The event was won by Mick Clohessy from Raheny Shamrocks AC in a time of 30 mins 22 secs. We will get to see him next month in the Olympic Marathon in Rio. This was the final act of Swords Summer festival, which brought a great atmosphere to the town. An enthusiastic County Mayor, Darragh Butler told the County Leader, “From the word go, the Swords Summer festival was a great success, with a wonderful concert fundraiser for Swords Lions Club on Friday night. The Three Tenors and Roy Taylor had us rocking into the night at the Marquee in Swords Town Park.” He continued, “This is the second year we have held this festival and it was a long time dream for many of us, to be able to close off main street for a festival. The best part was seeing the people of Swords embracing the event with such gusto. Thanks must be extended to the County Council and to the local businesses, without whom this would not be possible. With so many people coming out to support the festival, means that we will continue to have this festival year after year. As a Swords councillor, it makes me feel very proud,” he said. Similarly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid was thrilled with the success of the Swords festival, when he told the County Leader, “This was another major success and as the recent population census showed, we have the fastest growing populations in Ireland. Swords has a very diverse population and the festival reached out to all ages and diversities

of population that we represent. We are getting really wonderful feedback from people who have seen the work being carried out in the castle. This is reaching its true potential and the smiles on people’s faces was very satisfying. The festival is one of the major events on our calendar and what’s really great is that businesses and communities are engaging stronger than ever. We’re putting a lot of investment into Swords, which is very important to us,” he said. The hugely successful ‘Malahide Has It’ festival lived up to its name, with lots of families enjoying the great entertainment in very good weather, which added to the occasion. New Street was closed off as festival goers enjoyed having a drink and enjoying the excellent live music from top class musicians. The atmosphere here was electric, as the different acts were much appreciated by all. The pubs in the area did a rip roaring trade, with on-street bars particularly busy. The Green area was a hive of activity, with families and youngsters congregating to enjoy the entertainment. There was much to see and do here and one of the highlights was a display by members of the RNLI who showed people how to keep safe when close to water. There were opportunities to sample the renowned food and drink that Malahide is famous for. The events, including excellent live music continued
Asbestos On daa Owned Farm What could be construed as a potentially serious health hazard has come to light regarding the presence of asbestos on a farm belonging to Dublin Airport Authority (daa).
By Patrick Finnegan
Pictured at the daa owned farm at Portmellick, St Margaret's are Mary Ratcliffe, Mary Ratcliffe (Snr), Eithne Ratcliffe and Cllr Philip Lynam
The farm, which is in everyday use is situated at Portmellick on Dunbro Lane close to St Margaret’s village. The County Leader was contacted by local Sinn Fein councillor, Philip Lynam and the Ratcliffe family, whose brother, Shay lives about 200 metres from where loose asbestos is located on the farm. He is fearful that his health is now at risk. Shay’s sister, Eithne Ratcliffe said, “On
24th June, there was a public meeting at Roganstown Hotel regarding the North Runway. “We got speaking to a daa official who mentioned that there was asbestos at the farm at Portmellick.” “We would have expected to see works being undertaken having found out about the asbestos. When nothing happened, we took it upon ourselves to investigate it further. We had a meeting last week with representatives of daa in relation to an ongoing issue we have with daa regarding water ingress from daa land on to our property. This is an ongoing problem since 2014. At that meeting, we asked them if there was anything else they needed to tell us in relation to Dunbro Lane and they said no.” Continued on page 2
on Sunday, and despite a short bout of rain, the weather was fairly good, and the festival was deemed to be a great success. The three festivals were enjoyed by all, with a wonderful atmosphere and friendly spirit the order of the day. Congratulations must go to the organisers for their efficiency which made sure that everything went like clockwork and that the enjoyment and security of families was their main priority.

When starting out, the family worked the farm with rhubarb as their mainstay crop. A lot has changed over the years. As the farm grew in the 1930s, they began growing fruits and salads, supplying them to the local Dublin markets. Today, Keelings is still run by the same family, which is now operated by the third generation and

showing great success. From planting their very first strawberries in 1937, Keelings have gone on to grow a wide range of berries, fruit and vegetables, supplying their produce to shops and supermarkets nationwide. The new Keelings Farm shop has opened and has already proved a huge hit with customers, giving locals the chance to buy freshly picked fruit and veg straight from the farm they were grown on. David Keeling spoke about the new Farm Shop
and celebrating 90 years of growing: “We are so proud to be celebrating 90 years of growing here on the Keelings family farm with all our guests. We have always been very passionate about our work and we can celebrate our success. The new Farm Shop marks a new chapter in the Keelings story; we are very excited to officially launch the Farm Shop and give everyone the chance to try our range of products, freshly picked from our farm.”

Asbestos On daa Owned Farm Continued from page 1 “We put it to them about the asbestos and they confirmed and acknowledged that there is asbestos there and they are engaging a firm to remove it. They were unable to give us any information about the timeframe for the removal of the asbestos, or about the contractor. We have had updates from them in relation to it, but we feel that this is not good enough.” “We regards this as a major health hazard that needs to be addressed immediately. The fact that there is a broken pipe with asbestos means that when the wind comes from the west, it blows over the house, carrying dust and fibres from the asbestos rubble, “ said Eithne. Local Sinn Fein councillor, Philip Lynam, who was present at the farm, told the County Leader, “We don’t know what type of asbestos we’re dealing with here, whether it is airborne or whether it is in the soil where it could kill livestock. What I would like to know from daa is why this
area has not been closed off, and why have the local residents with livestock not been told. Over across the road from here, we have a church and a school, so if it’s airborne, or there’s a flood, are these children at risk?” We went up to view it and there’s a lot of it, so if they knew about it, they should have informed residents and had the area closed off,” said Lynam. The residents said that if daa had been more forthcoming in their communications with them, it would have put their minds at ease. A spokesperson for the daa told the County Leader, “As is best practice, prior to commencing works to clean-up debris in the lands at Portmellick House, which is a property owned by daa, we asked our safety consultants to carry out a survey of the area. Their report, completed in late June, found that there were some asbestos containing materials (ACMs) present on some cement/tiles. The asbestos at Portmellick has been found by the safety consultants to present a low

risk, as no work activities are taking place and there is no public access to the buildings.” “Materials containing asbestos were used extensively in building works both domestically and industrially up until 2000. Many roofs, shed buildings and domestic properties contain these type of materials and, as a result, the presence of ACMs at Portmellick would not be unexpected, given its previous use as a farm. Asbestos is a hazardous material, however the risk of exposure to asbestos is determined by a number of factors, such as product type, condition and work activities.” The statement concluded, “In accordance with regulations, daa informed the Health and Safety Authority in late June of its intention to remove the ACMs identified on the site. A contractor has been appointed and these works, which will be independently managed and monitored by our safety consultants, are expected to begin shortly.”
airport authority now intends to enter a process to address these two conditions. I would like to make clear that I do not support the daa in their decision to appeal and am therefore calling on the daa to reconsider St. Margaret's resident, John Harris is their application to pictured with a newspaper story from achieve unrestricted 1991 about the ongoing struggle of resi- use of the north dents from the area are continuing to face the same struggle for more than 25 years runway.” “Since 2004, I have consistently supported the development of the airport. The airport is a major employer in North Dublin and the new runway has the capacity to create thousands of additional jobs, which I welcome.” He concluded by saying, “This project will allow the airport to grow for the benefit of the Irish economy by supporting additional trade, tourism and foreign direct investment in Ireland. I therefore fully support the development and expansion of the North Runway at Dublin Airport, however; the very genuine and serious concerns of residents must be taken into account.”
Local , Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has raised his concerns regarding Dublin Airport Authority’s decision to seek an amendment to the conditions from An Bord Pleanála to secure unrestricted use of a second runway at the airport. A public meeting was held on Thursday last at the White House pub where residents of the Ward and St Margaret’s came out in force objecting to the fact that the daa are to challenge to two of the planning conditions associated with the runway. The meeting was attended by Darragh O;Brien TD, and councillors, David O’Connor and Joe Newman. Speaking to the County Leader, O’Brien said, “Recently I was happy to meet with the Dublin Airport Authority together with colleagues from the Oireachtas and members of community groups representing Portmarnock, Malahide and Swords. The feedback from the residents of St Margaret’s and The Ward was also raised. It was an important opportunity to engage with the various stakeholders and interests associated with these plans.” “One of conditions laid down by An Bord Pleanála when the planning permission was granted in 2007, stipulated that the total number of night-time flights at the airport cannot exceed 65 between 11pm and 7am once the new runway is built and that take-off and landing times were to be restricted to between 7am and 11pm.” Pictured at the public meeting at the White House pub, which was called by residents from St Margaret's and the He continued, “I’m Ward, who are protesting at daa's decision to challenge two conditions to the North Runway, are Patricia McGuinness, concerned that the Sue Mitchell, Deirdre Kennedy, Grainne Redmond, Sean Costello, Cllr Philip Lynam, Helen Kenny, Joe Kenny, John Harris, Cllr David O'Connor and Darragh O'Brien TD

St Finian’s Parish Ordains Its First Priest Sunday, 10th July last was a red letter day in the history of St Finian’s Parish in River Valley, Swords. The occasion was the ordination to the priesthood of local man, Fr. Damian Polly, the first man to be ordained from the parish. It comes just a week after another great celebration in the parish, the 25th anniversary of St Finian’s Church. The ordination was a beautiful and solemn occasion and was attended by many proud parishioners, as they waited to congratulate their new priest, many of whom remember him clearly as a young boy growing up in the parish. This was a real community effort, with the Parish Council and the River Valley/Rathingle Community Centre pulling out all the stops to make this a memorable day. After Fr Damian’s first Mass, everyone retired to the Community Centre, where refreshments were served and the proud locals chatted with the new priest in a relaxed and informal manner. It certainly capped a memorable fortnight in the history of St Finian’s Parish.

This event cost €2 per player to be donated into a sealed charity box, which was presented to Diabetes Ireland by the children. He has been running a fun football league for the children of Balbriggan and Stamullen and any money remaining has been donated to local charities. This was donated to Diabetes Ireland recently. The price of an average three bedroom semi detached house in North Dublin has risen by 1 per cent to €252,500 in the last year, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. The REA Average House Price Index concentrates on the sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide. “Prices are stabilising with small increases in certain types, while there is strong demand for three-bed semis in settled estates for under 220k,” said John Cumisky from REA Cumisky in Balbriggan. A nationwide supply shortage has fuelled a rise of over 2 per cent in the price of the average house in the last three months, with the majority of counties in the State recording price increases in Quarter Two this year, the latest Real Estate Alliance Average House Price Survey found. However, it is the lack of supply of suitable properties in a scarce market that has caused these rises, exacerbated by the effect of would-be commuters moving ever further from Dublin to acquire affordable homes. “We are seeing firms who are in business for 50 years who have never experienced such a low level of supply, and this is responsible for causing sharp increases in prices in some areas over the past three months,” said REA Chairman Michael O’Connor.

Extension To Lusk School Badly Needed
Celebrating 10 years of Gourmet Food Parlour in Swords this month, ambassador and Dublin GAA footballer, Paul Flynn, coached 15 competition winners at the Kick About with Paul training session, in Fingallians GAA club, Swords on Wednesday, 13th July. Speaking in the Dáil, local Sinn Féin TD Louise O’Reilly questioned the Minister for Education and Skills on the promised extension to Lusk Community College, given the demography challenges and over subscription to current schools in the North County. O’Reilly said: “It is very clear that this school is expanding and it is not acceptable that students are being accommo-
Catherine Added To Irish Paralympic Team Local para-triathlete, Catherine Walsh from Swords and her pilot, Fran Meehan, have been confirmed as part of the Irish Paralympic team heading to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio this year. The duo will compete in the PT5 event in Para-triathlon, and will be Ireland’s first ever para-triathletes to attend a Paralympic Games as the sport makes its debut in Rio this September. Speaking about the news, Catherine, who is visually impaired will be representing Ireland for the seventh time at a Paralympic Games said, “We are absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity to represent Ireland once more at a Paralympic Games. It is fantastic to see that in the first year of Para Triathlon at the Games, there will be Irish triathletes representing their country at Rio.” “We have been working hard all year to get a qualification slot for Rio, and to be told that our hard work has now paid off and that I will be representing my country again for the seventh time at a Paralympic Games is fantastic. I look forward to becoming part of a great team of 44 other Paralympic athletes – it’s a fantastic feeling.” Welcoming the news was team leader and Technical Director for the Para-Triathlon team, Eamonn Tilley, who said, “Success comes with hard work, dedication, passion and team work. Catherine and Fran have achieved so much in a short space of time. We at Triathlon Ireland are delighted with the news and it was always our aim to get a Para-triathlete to Rio.

dated in prefabs. Indeed, I was driving home only the other day when I passed yet another development in Lusk. That is good news and it is great that people are moving to north County Dublin, but, unfortunately, it will bring with it additional pressures on the school system.” She went on to say,“When will we see the next phases of the school project commence? It is not acceptable that pupils are being accommodated in prefabs. This issue has been raised with me by a number of constituents. They want to know when the school will be built. They are not happy that their children are being accommodated in prefabs.” “Nobody will be surprised when I express disappointment with the Minister’s response as it indicated that the project will be delayed even further while the Department awaits receipt of the stage 2b report. There is a pressing need for the building project at the community school in Lusk to be completed. This is an area of north County Dublin with a growing population
where educational needs will only increase. It is not acceptable that pupils are being accommodated in prefabricated buildings and do not have access to a school gymnasium,” she said.
She concluded by saying; “The Minister’s response does not give me anything of comfort which would allow me to convey to the people of Lusk that the project will proceed any time soon. It is not good enough to

provide a ‘wait and see’ reply. People in the area will see more children educated in prefabs, which are not the answer. If the Department has money to spend on prefabricated accommodation, I respectfully suggest that it has money to fasttrack this process.”

The County Council are delighted to announce that they have been awarded four flags at the An Taisce Green Flags Awards 2016. Ardgillan Demesne and St. Catherine’s Park received two new flags, with Malahide Demesne and Millennium Park retaining their flag status for 2016. The An Taisce Green Flag is awarded in recognition of achieving quality standards for the presentation of parks and recreation facilities. It promotes high horticultural and environmental standards and a benchmark for excellence in park management based on acknowledged international best practice. Launching the ceremony on the 21st July in the Phoenix Park, Sean Canney, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works (OPW), said: “The awards provide an important benchmark for parks to uphold standards of excellence” adding, “Ireland’s wealth of stunning parks is a testament to the hard work and dedication of staff who work there.” Gemma Carr, Senior Executive Parks Superintendent for Fingal County Council said: “Our parklands are a wonderful amenity for visitors and citizens alike, and a highlight of our tourism offering in Fingal. We are delighted to receive these awards, which give recognition to the ongoing work we do to ensure that the county remains a place that people want to visit and enjoy.” The award scheme which is already established in more than 50 countries was trialled in a limited number of Parks in 2015. This is the first year An Taisce has made the award available to public parks, country parks, cemeteries and green spaces across the whole country.

These included the Message in a Bottle initiative launched with the support of Dublin Fire Brigade, Crosscare Befriending Initiative, OPRAH – Older People Remaining At Home. In January 2014, Skerries received an Environmental Award from Age Friendly Ireland recognising their great work in this area. The day started with Mary Conway and Brendan Sherlock making a presentation to the judges in Mourne Resource Centre and outlining the the processes undertaken in the town to make it a great place in which to live, work and grow old. The judges then visited Skerries Old School House to meet Community Project representatives, including Crosscare’s Befriending Project, Citizens Information Service, Skerries Fire Brigade’s Message in a Bottle initia-

An example of the customer service they provide include the blister pack service for people who experience difficulties managing their medications. ‘We are happy to facilitate deliveries and blister packing of monthly medications when required. We recently got a defibrillator in the shop and many of the staff are trained as Cardiac First Responders. Laura explained that the pharmacy carries extensive ranges of Ostomy and Diabetics supplies, as well as an increasing range of IVF prescription
supplies and that the pharmacist is always available for private consultations in the consultation room. These days are really informative for new mums and mums-to-be, as guest speakers include Nurse Advisors, Nutritional Advisors and Breastfeeding Specialists. This is testament to McCartans willingness to go that extra mile for their customers, and why they have maintained a very loyal customer base over the years. They also have an excellent over the counter service, where customers can get nonprescription medication and advice. Such is the success of McCartans Pharmacy that they have extended their range of outlets, which now includes shops in Skerries, Bayside, Fairview, Northside Shopping Centre, Sutton Cross, Maynooth and two shops in Portmarnock. Even though we are still only in July, Laura was keen to let customers know that they are beginning to plan for the Christmas market. “We will be running our Christmas club, where people can put by money and pick out products and pay them off and collect them fully gift wrapped during Christmas week.

Malahide Road Industrial Park is a very prominent retail and manufacturing estate, located in Coolock and is one of the largest estates of its kind north of the Liffey. It is also home to some of the most instantly recognisable brand names in the retail business. Tom Vennard and Diarmuid Everard are part of the estate’s management team and they spoke about what this giant industrial park has to offer for discerning shoppers. Malahide Road Industrial Park is made up of 75 acres of mixed manufacturing and retail outlets, situated between the Malahide Road, close to the Darndale roundabout and Greencastle Road in Coolock, which was the original entrance point. Access to the estate is beside the petrol station on the Malahide Road, beside McDonald’s restaurant close to the Darndale roundabout, as well as another access point at Bargaintown on Greencastle Road, adja-

I don’t think that has changed too much in the intervening 10 years.” It is believed that Greencastle Parade was started in 1967 and then Newtown, which is part of the estate was started in 1969, with the rest of the estate being built in 1970. These are likely to be the last buildings to be constructed in the estate,” said Diarmuid
Everard who is the Managing Director of Printcom in the estate. Tom explained, “The estate was built in three different phases and units were duplicated and triplicated in some cases. The unit numbers are up to around 110 units. There are a number of high profile and well-known businesses in the estate, including Cont. on page 14

Most of the estate is taken up with units that are dedicated to manufacturing products, which would account for about 66 per cent, with the balance made up of retail units. Tom Vennard explained that retail units were originally in zone 7, but it was changed during rezoning as zone 6. This means that you could build anything you liked here, even a hotel, apartments, medical centre and shops if you wished. There is a grand plan for
the redevelopment of Malahide Road Industrial Park, which has been signed off, which includes a park and you can walk through a tree-lined area. The plan also includes a landmark building, where Irish Merchants are located and another one beside Tayto at the other end of the estate. The old Tayto building is very well known and it has been bought by Stafford’s Funeral Home, with a plan to develop a couple of funeral homes, as well as about four or five Chapels of Rest. Tom suggested that there was talk about plans to build a crematorium, but he was unsure if this was still a viable proposition or not.
The plan for the estate is based loosely on Sandyford Industrial Estate and the hope is that it will proceed, although both Tom and Diarmuid are not too confident of it going ahead, due in the main to financial considerations. Many of the old buildings have asbestos roofs, so these cannot be
disturbed. However, the estate has many of the necessary infrastructures in place like water, sewage, electricity, broadband. Vacant units are not really a problem in the estate, and Tom explained, “Any vacant units at the moment are big units that nobody wants and I get enquiries from time to
time from people wanting to lease units of 1,000 or 2,000 square feet in size, but there’s nothing here of that size. There are large units, so if anybody wants to convert them into smaller units, we would
like to hear from them,” he said. The rents are very cheap, because about four years ago, the price of units here went right back to what I paid in 1992 compared to what some of the newer companies paid at the height of the

boom in 2005. While the prices are starting to climb back, the units still represent good value for money,” said Diarmuid. About two or three years ago there were about 25 vacant units in the estate, but this is not the case anymore. “With a workforce of about 1700, there’s a lot going on here and a lot of money and tax being generated. At the moment there’s over

one million square footage of units in the estate,” said Tom. I think the estate will stay as it is as a functioning industrial estate for the foreseeable future, with perhaps a little more retail over time. With Northside Shopping Centre being revamped, that will mean competition on the retail side, but for manufacturing companies like us, you’re talking about a manu-

facturing infrastructure, so if I had to move out of here, I’d need to find another place, rewire it, get it up to speck etc.” Both Diarmuid and Tom are agreed that the coexistence of retail and manufacturing units side by side is a good thing and is to be promoted. The thought was that with the shortage of housing, that the estate would be rezoned for housing, but there are plenty of houses in the immediate vicinity. One of the great advantages for companies operating in Malahide Road Industrial Park is the proximity to the M50, M1, the airport and the Port Tunnel for ease of access to the market place. The Management Company is a limited company, which is limited by guarantee and it is funded by donations from people in the estate. It is a nonprofit organisation and any money made goes into improvements in the estate. At the moment, they are looking for Dublin City Council to provide adequate signage, so
that customers can be directed to the Business Park. “We are also trying to encourage networking between companies in the estate in an effort to encourage business building between themselves. We hope to meet up on a regular basis to discuss how we can generate more business among ourselves,” said Diarmuid.
We could certainly present ourselves as a block for insurance, for maintenance, and other services. There’s huge potential here and the challenge is to get all the companies to engage. We tried to arrange a meeting with the politicians, but that fell through, so it’s hard to get everyone on board,” said Diarmuid.

The annual ‘Malahide Has It’ Festival took place over the weekend. It started on Friday evening and finished up on Sunday evening and is considered to have been an outstanding success. There was a myriad of family fun events for the whole family to enjoy. Many of the events took place at the Green in the town, where families enjoyed all that Malahide has to offer. a happy and relaxed atmosphere in the great weather. While there was a small bout of rain on Sunday, it didn’t amount to much. New Street was the focus of attention for many, as the Stage was located here. The fantastic atmosphere here was enhanced by some excellent live music by bands, some of which were local. Great credit must go to Malahide Chamber of Commerce for the great effort they put in and the work of countless volunteers, who ensured that everything went like clockwork.

Deluxe Envirogroup is a nationwide commercial Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Ductwork installation and maintenance company, offering services of the highest quality. Earlier this year, a new branch was opened at Unit J5 at Swords Enterprise Park, Feltrim Road, Drynam. Managing Director, Mike Coffey, a native of Rush has overseen a very steady growth
and ductwork services. With their unique skills and experience in maintenance
the needs of businesses. Mike Coffey explained, “We took on a partnership with Envirogroup from Warrenpoint Co. Down and in that time we have grown quite a lot, with an initial staff of about five people and some part-time staff. Now we have a

in the company, which offers a one-stop solution providing ventilation, air conditioning
devices, they can provide customers with a wide range of packages tailored to
staff of 12 full-time as well as some part-time workers. We are a niche company, where
we go into hotels and restaurants at night to degrease the ducts. We are all about hygiene, ventilation and grease extraction. The grease extraction part is for hotels, restaurants and pubs which serve food. The hygienic ducting element comes from nursing homes and hospitals, where the air has to be clean at all times. “Our crew go in at night when restaurants are closed and carry out the somewhat unglamorous, but necessary degreasing work. We have managed to land some very important customers, including the Shelbourne Hotel, the Gresham Hotel, the Westbury Hotel, the Clayton range of hotels, Apache Pizza and Milano Coffee shops. Another very important customer is Dublin Fire Brigade, where we keep their premises clean all of the time. Grease Extract Ventilation cleaning is perhaps the most important function carried out by the company. Mike explains, “The biggest fire risk in buildings with catering facilities comes from the accumulation of greaseladen deposits in extract ventilation systems. While there

is no legislation controlling it at the moment, people are becoming much more aware of the dangers associated with grease laden areas.” “Grease extract ductwork can stretch through the entire length of a building reaching to a roof level exhaust, so uncleaned ductwork can put not only the occupants at risk from fire, but the entire premises. A devastating fire can be set off by something as simple as a spark in a grease-laden environment. These premises need to be cleaned about 4 to 5 times per year.” “Although filters in canopies trap some grease particles, it is inevitable that some grease-laden air will pass through, allowing grease deposits accumulate on the internal
surfaces of the ductwork,” he said. Fire and Health Safety requires owners and managers of buildings to ensure the Grease Extract Ventilation System is included in the Fire Risk assessment and action taken to eliminate any potential risk to occupants. The strength of Deluxe Envirogroup is that they pride themselves on their after care service, which is of great importance to customers. Value for money for a job carried out by fully trained professionals working to ISO 9000-2008 quality standard, which meets and exceeds client expectations, is what customers can expect from Deluxe Envirogroup. Getting the correct air conditioning system is of great importance to the health and safety of employees and this is where Deluxe Envirogroup are experts in installing air conditioning systems specifically designed to suit your premises. “We pride ourselves on the quality of our work and our exceptional customer service,” said Mike, who stated that they are not satisfied with just completing a job. “We issue full reports and certification after each job is complete,
and we place great emphasis on this. “We insist on this for the peace of mind of our customers. We also produce before and after photos as well as the full report. Insurance companies will look for these reports, as well hygiene and food safety reports. Deluxe Envirogroup are sole agents for their products in the Republic of Ireland and their location beside the MI and M50 motorways
means that they have ease of access to clients across the country. At present they have two vans on the road and a third van ready to go. Mike insists on developing a family style atmosphere in the company, with a highly motivated workforce. With such a commitment to their customers, there is little doubt that Deluxe Envirogroup will enjoy many more successful years in business.

The second staging of the Swords Summer Festival, which started on Friday evening with the highly successful fundraising concert for Sword and District Lions Club and ended with the Fingal 10k run on Sunday morning, was, by all accounts, a great success. Families turned out in force to enjoy the festivities on Saturday, all of which were free of charge. Swords Main Street was closed to traffic and a large stage at the Castle end of the street was the focal point for some excellent young local bands to strut their stuff. The garden area beside the Castle also hosted the ever popular Chandelier events on Saturday evening. This was a particularly popular event that was enjoyed by all. Swords Park was transformed into a wonderland for children, as they took part in the fantastic array of free events, all held in wonderful weather conditions. Great credit must go to the County Council for their imaginative programme of events that kept everyone entertained and contributed to the success of the festival

As the awaited summer season is here, you may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly just want to make the house more summer friendly. Whatever you’re thinking of, County Leader have gathered some tips to hopefully inspire you to get started. It is possible to change the look of your home, on the outside and inside, on just a small budget. Businesses in the North County have some great summer offers on to give you the best bargain, and achieve your summer home on a small budget. As the summer’s here, there’s no longer a need for drab colours and heavy materials. Here is a season where your surroundings should be light and breezy to reflect the summer. A popular tip is to replace those heavy winter curtains for lighter, thinner ones. Embrace the sun, it’s not everyday we have it. In fact, we most probably spend a third of the year in the dark and cold, a little morning sunshine and late nights can’t harm us. Summer’s all about the light colours, and allowing more light into the house will bring summer indoors too. Not only this, but it will also make your rooms appear larger and more spacious. Appearing to have more space reflects the outdoor air and breeze, preparing you for the summer. For the bathroom, replace the bath mats and towels with lighter colours. A light
fresh coat, making the lawn look a whole lot healthier. Take this time to decide if your lawn requires levelling, and for other big garden projects, you may need some profes-
scented candle always looks calming and relaxing when lit. Try a fresh scented one, similar to vanilla or sea breeze, these light scents always add to the tone. Perhaps now is the time to try some new bathroom products. Now it’s summer, everything comes to life, including scents, embrace this by opting for a different body wash, perhaps a scented one. Get your garden summer friendly. Freshen the look of your garden, just by simply pulling out a few weeds from the paving and flower beds. Unfortunately, in the summer, the lawn can become high maintenance, with it needing a trim every two weeks. However, it is a good excuse to spend some time out in the sun. Sprinkle some grass seeds onto the lawn, this will layer it with a
sional , local landscapers. If there are only small areas that need levelling, you may be able to just use sand, and allow the lawn time to grow through.

In 2016, many families will see their child or children off to college for the first time, others will see their children return. Frans Timmerman First Vice President of the Commission posted on his Facebook page in respect of Brexit “…….We need to express our lasting solidarity with the British people, whatever their position is on the EU, because the fight against xenophobia, bigotry and hatred is as much theirs as it is ours … Whether we like it or not, whether it makes us feel comfortable or not: our destinies are and will remain linked, whatever happens. Let’s try and make the best of it, shall we?” Indeed we must make the best of it. In light of the ongoing terrorist attacks and the upheaval in Turkey it is important that Europe remains united as a common block in upholding and defending our common values. The security of Europe faces great threats both from within and without. The recent pronouncement of the US Presidential Candidate Donald Trump that if elected he may withdraw support from his fellow members of NATO. Such an act has considerable implications for all Europeans irrespective of their positions as NATO members or as in Ireland’s case neutrals. That is why it is important that the ideals of the founding
fathers of the EEC are not only achieved but exceeded. In doing so the EU must provide refuge to those fleeing conflict zones and by wise action and intervention, assist in establishing lasting peace in those countries horn by war. Such action will contribute to the security of the continent. We, the citizens of the EU must be prepared to push our elected members, to not only defend the By Cathal Boland vision of the founding fathers of the EU and that they must be to the forefront in formulating strategy which will deliver these objectives. I note that the UK’s new PM is setting clear battle lines that Brexit means Brexit. Some on the other side of the house are talking about another referendum. Labour Leadership challenger, Owen Smith is reported as saying that after the UK-EU exit deal is negotiated, Labour should push for another referendum to ask the people what they think of the “new deal.” He went on to argue that many voters now believe that they were misled by the Brexit campaign. Should negotiations drag on for years, some suggest four to six years, the Government of the day could well opt to put the new deal to the people. Irrespective of what May says now, for by then she may not be PM.

Ardgillan Castle held a Victorian Style Afternoon last Saturday week in the castle. The event included a costume workshop, where participants learned about the change in fashion from the 1800’s up until the time of the Rising in Ireland. They were also invited to try on period costumes and experience what is was
like to dress like women at the time. Laura Thorp, a professional costumier delivered this fascinating talk, all while dressed in early bustle outfit dating from the 1870s. Laura enthralled the group with tales of how ladies fashion had dramatically changed over time, from the simple regency dress right up to the bustle,

which may well be the inspiration for the large derriere look so often modelled on social media these days. The workshop was followed by afternoon tea in the exquisite drawing room at Ardgillan Castle. This beautiful room harks back to a time when Ardgillan was a social hub, with the Taylor’s entertaining in
the very same room in the Victorian era. To round off an enjoyable day, participants were brought on a guided tour of the castle where they were enthralled with stories of life in a ‘Big House’. This event was one of the many engaging events in Ardgillan’s 2016 event calendar. Coming up over the next few months are a Storytelling Afternoon and Living History Day for Heritage Week.

He was a Papa so very rare, Content in his home and always there, On earth he toiled, In heaven he rests, God Bless you Papa, You were one of the best, Love and Miss you always Your Grandchildren Colm and Darren
Dad
We lost a dad with a heart of gold, How much we miss him can never be told, He shared our lives and helped us along, If we follow in his footsteps we can never go wrong, Put your arms around him Lord, And treasure him with care, For you have in your possession, A dad beyond compare, Your loving Daughter Ann and Son-in-law Fergus
Papa We never fail to think of you, We never cease to care, If only we could still drop in, And find you sitting there, Your cheery ways and smiling face, Are a pleasure to recall Sadly missed by your Grandchildren Pamela and Michelle and great Grandchildren Katelyn, Lilly and Tom.
