would work its way back down to River Valley Regional Park, eventually ending up at Swords Castle,” he said. There already is an objective in the County Development Plan to develop the Ward River Valley Regional Park up as far as Rivermeade and Newman believes that this area would tie in perfectly with this plan. “I believe that this would be a huge benefit in boosting tourism and encouraging visitors to the area. This represents an ideal opportunity, not to nestle Swords by creating urban sprawl, and it really needs to be examined carefully. The planners have agreed to do a survey on this land to find out the best possible use for it and I intend, as well as other councillors in the Swords area, to contribute towards developing this area for the benefit for all the people of Swords and improving their natural environment,” he said.

Newman believes that this proposal could be included in the daa’s Community Gain Fund, which is attached to the new runway, where daa will support local projects within the immediate airport communities. Indeed he took the opportunity to broach the subject with Paul O’Kane from daa, when they met in River Valley Community Centre last week at the Public Information Meeting on the proposed new runway, between daa and the local residents.

Great Day For Lusk National School The first bricks were laid on the foundations of two brand new state of the art schools for Lusk National School. There will be a new junior and a senior school, replacing the current combined school, which will be demolished at some time next year. This is a further boost to the educational development of Lusk, with the recently opened Lusk Community College having recently been approved for an extension. Chairperson of the Board of Management, Lorcan O’Toole told the County Leader, “This is a fantastic day for Lusk National School and it’s the start of a major project that will see us develop two new schools and a fantastic hall for the community to use. We will manage the hall ourselves and the school has set up a committee to manage the hall. It will be available for all kinds of purposes. Lusk is a thriving and growing community and the school is now seven or

Lusk National School has always been at the heart of the community and we cater for a wide range of nationalities, ethnicities and cultural groups here at Lusk National School. A number of pupils were included in the brick laying operation, which was attended by Chief Executive of Fingal County

Council Paul Reid and by acting County Mayor and local councillor, Ken Farrell. Principal, Paul Comiskey was full of praise for Cllr Farrell and the role he played in this project being achieved. For his part, Cllr Farrell thanked the County Council for having the foresight in making €1.2 million funding available, so that the schools could be completed.

Paul O'Kane from daa and Cllr Joe Newman have a frank exchange of opinions at the Public Consultation meeting at River Valley Community Centre, Swords about the new runway, and how it will affect local residents on Wednesday last

He told the County Leader, “Just recently there was a motion put forward to rezone lands in the Knocksedan area, backing on to the Ridgewood and Brookdale area. This is an area that is under agricultural use at this point in time. I objected to the rezoning on the basis that all we are doing is continuing an urban sprawl in Swords,” he said. Newman eyed this as a location, which is situated off the Naul Road south of Knocksedan, as a unique area that could help to transform Swords into a town that people would like to visit. “We have the local castle and we have the regional park, with the objective to grow this westwards towards Rivermeade. This area could be turned into an urban forest, which would facilitate forest walks and cycling taking into account Knocksedan House, which has a preservation order attached to it. This

hotel upon completion. Planning permission for the 11-storey hotel has already been granted. Construction is expected to begin next October and the property will open in 2019. A spokesperson for daa said, “The new hotel will have a total floor area of 22,840 square metres comprising 402 bedrooms, as well as extensive bar, restaurant, café and conference facilities and a fitness suite. It will occupy a prime 0.81 acre site between Terminal 2 and the T2 multi-storey car park – and will be located just 95 metres from Terminal 2.”

Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said, “There is significant demand for a new terminal-linked hotel at Dublin Airport and this development will benefit not just the airport, but the city and region as a whole as Dublin needs more hotel beds. It will also provide employment for 250 people, as well as a further 150 construction jobs during the building programme, which is expected to last about 18 months,” he said. “We’re constantly striving to improve the product that we provide to our customers and this new hotel will offer extra choice and convenience to passengers and to the many companies that are based on the Dublin Airport campus,” Mr Harrison said. “It will also provide much needed additional hotel capacity for the entire Dublin region.” Between 2010 and 2015, only four hotels comprising 594 bedrooms were built in Dublin. The Irish Tourist Industry Confederation (ITIC) warned last year that Dublin requires a further 5,000 hotel bedrooms by 2020 to meet demand.

Bríd Walsh, who is the co-ordinator of the North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force and one of the organisers of the event, spoke to the County Leader about the idea to sleep rough. Last year’s event was in Swords and Bríd explained that it was a great success. “We only had about five or six people last year and we decided we would repeat it and we decided on Skerries as the place. Last year we collected over €3000 for homelessness, which was a great achievement, and this year was even better,” said Brid. “The idea of a sleep out came from Louise

Ringing in Your Ears? Get the Buzz on Tinnitus Tinnitus is often described as a ringing in the ears. It also can sound like roaring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing. It may be soft or loud, high pitched or low pitched. You might hear it in either one or both ears. People with severe tinnitus may have trouble hearing, working or even sleeping. Tinnitus is actually heard by most people at some point in their lives, even those with normal hearing. It can be a by product of loud noise exposure, such as after a rock concert or a night out at the symphony. It can also happen spontaneously

without any reason, and then disappear as oddly as it began. Many individuals believe this is just a function of the normal hearing system. It is when tinnitus starts to negatively affect one’s life, or becomes bothersome to a person that further consultation may be necessary. A trained and experienced hearing healthcare professional can discuss what treatment options are available. Because tinnitus can be very unique from person to person, it is important to find a treatment plan that is individualised for your needs

on Doors & Timber Flooring and works best for you. It is strongly recommended that you start with a hearing healthcare professional who is trained and experienced in treating tinnitus patients. Our professionals have in-depth training on different treatment options and will thoroughly discuss your tinnitus problems with you.

A man had a €75,000 claim against Wright’s Cafe Bar Swords dismissed in the circuit court last week, in a case which was successfully handled on behalf of Wright’s Cafe Bar, by Swords based Solicitors, Hennessy and Perrozzi. The man claimed damages for falling off a step onto the floor. He gave evidence in Dublin Circuit Court before the President of the Circuit Court, Judge Raymond Groarke and claimed that he suffered an injury to his ribs as a result of the fall which happened on the 10th December 2011. He claimed that he still experiences sharp pain in his chest five years later. John Hennessy, of Hennessy Perozzi Solicitors told the County Leader, “My client considers themselves to be on the receiving end of the claims culture and they have done their best to improve standards. This is, in my client’s view, an endorsement of the efforts made to improve standards over the past number of years, for the ultimate safety of its patrons. I have to say that it is very difficult to get a result for defendants in such cases and my client is very happy with the result,” he said. Engineering evidence was give to the court and found that the step in question was perfectly safe at the time of the incident. Judge Groarke dismissed the man’s claim noting that he did not look down when stepping off the step . After the full hearing a spokesman for Michael JF Wright Hospitality, who run several restaurant bars across Dublin, said he was pleased with the outcome. “Of course we pride ourselves on the efforts we make to ensure the safety of all our customers but sometimes people can genuinely injure themselves however, as in this case, it wasn’t our fault. This case represents a significant victory for businesses doing their best to provide a social experience in a safe environment without the fear of spurious and fictitious claims,” the spokesman said.

Older People Encouraged To Apply For Fuel Allowance Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) is encouraging older people in the North County to apply for the Fuel Allowance this autumn, as the new fuel allowance season gets underway in advance of the winter. He told the County Leader, “The Fuel Allowance scheme is designed to assist pensioners and other very low income households to meet the cost of their heating needs during the winter

season.” “I encourage older people and people in receipt of social welfare in Dublin Fingal to apply for the allowance. They can fill in the form in their local Post Office, or find it online at http://www.welfare.ie /en/Pages/FuelAllowance.aspx “The Fuel Allowance is means tested and is paid to the customer with their social welfare payment at a rate of € 22.50 per

CARPOOL

WALK!

Made famous in recent times by James Cordon and his host of celebrity friends, the carpool can be a fun way of getting around! Because you’re splitting the cost of petrol and parking, carpooling can be a great money saver and you’re guaranteed some company on your daily commute.

Put one leg in front of the other and repeat. Simple! If you are reasonably close to work, college or school, walking is the cheapest way to get around. It is also a great way to start and end your day and it allows you to clear your head and get some much needed fresh air! Just make sure that you equip yourself with a good quality brolly and some warm clothes! We do live in Ireland after all!

LOOK AFTER YOUR CAR Keeping your car in tip top shape can provide big savings over time. While there may be some initial investments, things like ensuring that your tyre pressure is correct or changing your oil will make sure that you are using your fuel in the most efficient way.

PARK WISELY Having to pay for parking means that you are paying for your commute even when your car isn’t moving. Super annoying right? Do some research into free parking in your area. It might mean that you’ll need to park a bit further away from work or college but the savings could potentially be huge.

HOP ON YOUR BIKE A great workout and a great way to get around-win win! If you don’t already have a bike, check out if your employer offers a ‘Cycle to Work Scheme’ to encourage employees to cycle to and from work.

TAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORT THE SMART WAY Use public transport as much as you can. Not only are you saving a lot of money and reducing your carbon footprint by traveling on mass, It also gives you the opportunity to use your time to catch up on texts or emails, chill out or read a book, which you obviously can’t do if you’re driving! If you plan on using public transport regularly, I can’t stress the importance of having a leap card. Leap card journeys are an average of 20% cheaper than cash single tickets and also offer a variety of other money saving initiatives such as fare capping which puts a cap on your weekly public transport spend after a certain threshold. It really is the smart way to use public transport.

Speaking at the conference, Nora Owen, Chair of the Fingal Age Friendly Alliance said: “I am very proud to be able to say that Fingal was the first Dublin Local Authority to embrace the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities & Counties Initiative. “Indeed, I am delighted to have been personally involved in some of the initiatives that we have undertaken in the county, such as Consultation Sessions with Beaumont Hospital and Walkability Surveys with Dublin Airport.” “We have 31 local authorities signed up to our Age Friendly

‘A Premiere Like No Other’ The premiere of The Wild Goose Lodge movie took place at the Savoy Cinema in Dublin on 20th October. The style, the atmosphere and the excitement was just breathtaking, and the premiere was like no other,” according to the cinema’s manager, Sandra O’Donoghue. The film was the brainchild and dream of William Martin, and this independent Irish movie had been 7 years in the making. Nine-year-old William Martin first heard the true story of the Wild Goose Lodge when he was playing in the fields near his home in Reaghstown, Co. Louth back in 1979. It never left him. The story of the burning of Wild Goose Lodge and the tragic events that surrounded it captured his imagination. He grew up with a burning desire to tell this story to the whole world. Fast forward to 2009, William is now aged 39 and the need to tell the tale of the Wild

Speaking at the launch, Fingal County Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid said: “I welcome the publication of the latest Dublin Economic Monitor which continues to show quarterly improvement among the topline indicators. I am particularly pleased with the feature this quarter on Dublin’s Agri-Food sector where analysis shows that Dublin accounts for one fifth of the total economic contribution of agri-food nationally (including food manufacturing and processing). In terms of primary production, there are over 800 farms and approximately 118,000 hectares of land categorised under agricultural use, ensuring that Dublin continues to be a major contributor to national output.” Guest speakers, Ciara Morley, Economic Consultant at DKM Economic Consultants and Austin Hughes, Chief Economist at KBC Bank Ireland, outlining the latest view on consumer sentiment and spoke about the rocky road to economic recovery, due to many factors including Brexit, which is not being experienced by all sectors of society, but they emphasised that the recovery is very real and growing.

Amazingly only 30 per cent of people living in Ireland have made a will. The same statistics show that people’s single biggest concern about dying is that their family won’t be provided for (27 per cent). Putting affairs in order will give people peace of mind and provide for loved ones. Best Will Week 2016 runs from Monday, 31st October to Sunday, 6th November and MyLegacy.ie in launching Best Will Week, is appealing to the public to make their will and leave a legacy donation to a cause they care about. Best Will Week is an annual awareness week, during which Irish people are reminded of the importance of making their will and asked to consider including a legacy gift to a charity they care about. This Best Will Week visit mylegacy.ie and learn about the importance of making a will from expert solicitors; find a list of solicitors nationwide that you can visit; and see some of the great causes you could choose to include in your will. While Ireland ranks as the 9th most generous country in the world, MyLegacy.ie research revealed that only 12 per cent of Irish people plan to leave money to a charity. Research revealed details that many people regret the things they didn’t do – a

quarter of those surveyed (24 per cent) say that if they died tomorrow, their biggest regret would be worrying

once all other important personal decisions have been made.” “Leaving a legacy to a charity close to your heart will ensure

too much, while 1 in 5 wish they had let themselves be happier. Research also showed that people’s single biggest concern about dying is that their family won’t be provided for (27 per cent), while just half have engaged with any of the practicalities around preparing for their own death, from making a will to discussing their wishes with family. Fergal O’Sullivan, Chairperson of MyLegacy.ie said “MyLegacy.ie was established in 2003 by a small group of Irish charities who knew first-hand the impact a legacy gift can have on the work of a charity. Over the last ten years, My Legacy has grown to an umbrella group of over 70 Irish charities. All of our members work together to promote the importance of making a will and to ask people to consider leaving a legacy to a favourite charity

that the causes you have supported in life will be able to continue their good work after you’ve gone. A large or small gift can make a big difference. This Best Will Week you can simply

Making a will is nothing to be afraid of and it will provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones. A will ensures that your wishes will be clear and carried out after your death, and that the people and causes you cared about in life will be looked after, when you are gone. Everyone should take time to make their will. It’s an important document and Best Will Week is a great time to do it.”

Laminate flooring can be tinted or coloured which is ideal for say, the conservatory, if one should wish to have green or a lighter shade of blue with a textured or crystal finish this would utilise the sunshine to add a sense of nature in a subtle but emanating tone. Laminate flooring can even be mixed and matched; differing tones of a high gloss finish can create a look which is both exciting and busy without looking overly synthetic or out of place.

Carpets

Over the years DIY has entered into the realm near to convenience as one can get; Laminate flooring has proven popular when desiring the wood effect which is both a alternative cheaper to hardwood and easier to assemble. The finished effect can be highly aesthetic but high heels are still a no no. Carpets are another set

of rules altogether, limitless in choice of colour and style, thickness and patterns, carpeting remains the ever traditional flooring option. There’s something quite fulfilling watching the kids play with their toy cars exploiting the pattern of the carpet to imaginative effect. The great aspect that remains about carpeting is that carpets can do so much to reflect a person’s persona. Carpet can accentuate a naturally lightened room or brighten up a children’s bedroom providing bright primary colours or complex patterns for the living room.

Garden Fencing & Decking The glory and versatility of wood to create a superiorly natural looking garden can be found when constructing fencing, decking, lining, panels, etc. All shapes and colours used go to providing the specific mix of timber and wood for that outdoor aspect of house and home. Decking is incredibly effective in wet conditions as their design allows for maximum drainage meaning an end to boggy conditions under foot, meaning cleaner kids and no footprints through the house. Perfect for climbing frames, table and chairs for BBQ evenings as well. Fencing can be cut to ornate designs to set out a decorative perimeter to any garden which can also be stained to any shade of teak, pine, etc. Professional deck layers and fence erectors provide a crucial professional finish to a garden or garden decking area for BBQ’s, children’s swings, tables, chairs and more so.

Ridgewood Close, Swords had appealed the Circuit Court’s dismissal of her compensation case. The judge, Mr Justice Kevin Cross overturned that order and awarded Ms Spyra a total of €16,650 - although he found she was 20 per cent responsible, reducing the award from an original €20,800. Ms Spyra (36), had sued MK Human Resources and Ryanair, as a result of the accident on July 28, 2011. The judge found the defendants liable, and was not of the view that Ms Spyra’s training on lifting baggage was sufficient. A brand new, state of the art school was opened at St Catherine’s National School in Rush on Thursday, 27th October, where a large gathering witnessed the ribbon cutting, which was performed by students, Kevins Lauva and Tommy Lee Gosson. The event was attended by principals of neighbouring schools in the area, as well as the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmaid Martin, who said prayers, prior to blessing the new school. The school choir performed magnificently, much to the delight of parents, teachers and invited guests. The entertainment also included a remarkable performance by the school’s Ukulele orchestra. Paul O’Hare, Chairperson of the Board of Management said, When I first came in contact with St Catherine’s 13 years ago, the first thing that struck me was the friendliness and professionalism of staff members, which sets the school apart to this day. He also had great words of praise for school principal, Ger O’Shea for his creative and innovative projects for children. “We are lucky to have him as our principal,” he said. He also heaped praise on the Parents’ Association, whom he described as tireless volunteers who do vital work like cake sales and bag packs and assisted reading, all of which is vital for the smooth running of the school.
