Concern Over Lusk Development By Patrick Finnegan Planning permission is being sought for a large development in Lusk that is causing great concern to residents in the historic town. The proposed development site is 7.2 hectares and will be located behind Station Road in the town. The applicant is Station Construction Ltd. The application covers 154 new dwellings to include 67 two bed homes, 78 three beds and 8 four “You only get one chance to get this right and bedroom dwellings. There have been a very large number of submissions made to the planning authority in respect to this application, which has raised an extraordinary number of concerns for many local residents. Based on the current application, there is huge opposition to it locally,” he said. Arnold accepts that this site will ultimately be developed, but he warns that any development must be sensitive to the history and heritage of this ancient town and that it is the right development for Lusk and its residents. “There’s a level of density on the overall site that seems very intense. In terms of the type of housing that should be on this site, we would be concerned that it should be comprised of mixed housing. We need to have a profile here that addresses issues right through to accommodation for the elderly and wheelchair accessibility.” Resident of nearby Lusk Village have concerns about access in and out, while residents of Orlynn Park are concerned about access from Station Road. The level of the increase in traffic could cause problems. The petrol station is another source of worry. “We are talking about a site that is pictured at the site of the in very close proximity to the ancient Round Tower and the old church, the historic core of Lusk. There are objectives here about maintaining the line of sight to these iconic buildings, which needs to be done in a very sympathetic way,” he said. Station Road needs to be designed in such

Twitter Takeover By Swords Students Second year students at St Finian’s Community College in Swords were one of five schools in Dublin, and the only one from the North County, to have been invited to take over the UNICEF twitter account for a while last Thursday. Teacher, Nicola McKittrick told the County Leader about how this initiative came about. She said, “UNICEF Ireland allowed us to take over their Twitter account for the morning and for two hours we had full access to their twitter feed. We were able to ask some of the leading politicians questions that we felt were important, particularly in the area of education.” “People from UNICEF came to the school some months ago and did some workshops with us and that’s how we were chosen. The takeover was really to ask politicians, particularly with the looming general election, questions that are important to young people. Local TD and Minister for Children, James Reilly was one of the politicians to take part in the event and the only local one,” she said. The students asked some very probing questions to the participating politicians, especially

with the upcoming election less than three weeks away. They asked Eamon Ryan, leader of the Green Party if Irish should be a subject of choice in schools. He agreed that it should be, much like German, which was greeted with much approval by the students. Micheál Martin, leader of Fianna Fail was also asked about subject choice and if the Junior Cert is still relevant or not and about making the Leaving Cert more accessible to all. Richard Boyd Barrett from People Before Profit was asked about school buildings, as St Finian’s Community College has been promised a new school for the past number of years, as the present one is quite old. “We asked him if he got into power, would he help with the upgrading of school buildings and improve equipment and materials available in schools. We weren’t too happy with his response, as he just gave us a general comment about investment in schools rather than a specific one. We wanted to know how much he would spend and what would he do,” asked the canny students. “It made us more aware about what is going on in the country and we are looking forward to the upcoming election, even though we cannot vote. We hope to run an election here in the school and how to go through the process of casting your vote,” said the students.

Donabate Leisure Centre Scoops Top Award The Community and Council Awards 2016 presented by IPB Insurance took place last week and Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre won the accolade of Local Sports Club of the Year. The centre was designed to create a focal point for all community, sports and leisure users. Originally designed in 1999 and built in 2002, it incorporated a bar and function room, modern Gym and sports hall. In 2005, a decision was made to close the bar area and develop a coffee shop. In 2008 the centre facilitated the new Donabate Community College while its build took place. This meant the centre was restructured and developed to accommodate up to 300 students and staff in the first floor. The coffee shop was relocated as was the Montessori facility. In 2014 another refurbishment took place to facilitate Donabate Library joining the centre, which has only added to the community needs. Over years with significant redevelopment and investment, Donabate Portrane Community & Leisure Centre has achieved it primary objective which is to “meet the ever changing needs of the community it serves.” Evidence shows that the centre is needed

more now than it was in 2001 with the ever changing expanding population. The County Leader spoke to Jacinta Lowndes Manager of the leisure centre who said: “ It is such a great thing for the centre. Obviously we are all delighted. “ She went on to say: “The club is community and leisure based so endeavours to serve the needs of everyone from 0-100+ years. Facilities include, gym which is wheelchair accessible, sports hall, all weather pitch, sauna & steam room, changing facilities, dance studios, Library Montessori & Coffee shop. We have worked with Community Department of Fingal County Council to encourage all ages to use our facilities. Most recently, Active Age for All has promoted a range of activities to over 50’s to participate in Yoga, Tai Chi, exercise classes, and outdoor football to name but a few.” She concluded by saying: “Everyone at Donabate Portrane Community Centre is delighted at winning Local Sports Club of the Year at the LAMA Awards. It’s wonderful recognition for our centre, the staff and volunteers and most of all our community and all the work we do to bring sport and leisure activities to everyone.”

There were huge objections from the public at the time. The planning application is not what the council or developer had presented to the people of Lusk previously. There was no question of a filling station, drive thru restaurant, three storey apartments, three entrances on to Station Road, or five entrances to the village,” he said. An angry Farrell continued, “Taking the track record of this developer in

the way he treated the people on the issue of pyrite, there would be no trust regarding anything he says or does. My greatest fear is that we will see three storey apartments, the housing, the petrol station, the drive thru restaurant, but we will never see the other proposals that would be beneficial to Lusk, like the town centre and shopping facility,” he said. Farrell has already taken the council to task, as he believes that they have given tacit support to this application, as there would have been a pre planning consultation on this application. Farrell concluded by saying, “I am surprised that conservationists that are engineers, our parks section and planners would give support to this project as it stands.”

Fury Over Decision To Close Rush Harbour A decision by the County Council to block access by vehicles on the slipway to Rush harbour, has been met with an angry response from locals who use the harbour for either fishing, leisure of potential life saving pursuits. Access to Rush harbour has been blocked by a bollard which is causing great disruption to locals who are mystified by the council’s decision last week. Local mand and harbour user, Peter Warren told the County Leader that all of the angling clubs in the North County use Rush harbour, also sub aqua clubs in the area, where they launch their boats. “This is a facility that has been here for hundreds of years and all of a sudden this bollard appeared without any notice or prior consultation. It restricts anyone from accessing the harbour by vehicle. Most of the people here at the slipway today, at very short notice, are from various clubs from all over the North County, including representatives from Howth, Balbriggan, Loughshinny and Rush Sea Angling clubs.” “Nobody seems to know why the bollard was put there in the first place. All the other

By Patrick Finnegan access points to the beach are blocked. We can’t get access to our boats – it’s a thorough disgrace,” said Peter. Swords man, Derek Evans who is angling correspondent with the Irish Times was at the slipway and he told the County Leader, “This slipway is used extensively throughout the year and is used by many angling clubs, sailing clubs, sub aqua clubs and the general public. The whole idea of putting the slipway here in the first place was to launch small recreation leisure craft and this has now been taken away from us. I just want to know the reason why,” he said. The County Leader contacted the council about their decision and they said, “Fingal County Council can confirm that due to a number of complaints of obstructive parking on the slipway being received from harbour users, a demountable bollard has been installed on the slipway. Access can be arranged by contacting Sean Mooney, Berthing Master at 087 281 7505,” the statement concluded.

Pictured at the closed-off entrance to Rush Harbour are angry residents of Rush, as well as harbour users from outside the area. Representatives of angling clubs from Balbriggan, Howth, Loughshinny and Rush, as well as sub aqua club members came together on Wednesday last to protest at the council's decision to close of Rush Harbour to vehicular access, without prior notice

Bob Byrne, secretary of Howth Sea Angling Club, which uses the harbour said, “We use this slipway quite a bit and if someone got into trouble out there and you wanted to bring a boat down here to launch it, you couldn’t do it. This is a very serious situation, which could have life saving implications. It’s a crazy set up.” What angers the assembled harbour users the most is that there was absolutely no consultation or notice that the harbour was to be closed off in this way. event, a start Your own business bootcamp, and many more”. The overall winner of the “Fingal Enterprise Award” will be announced at the end of the “Entrepreneur’s Journey” event on 10th March. The winner will go on to represent Fingal at the National Enterprise Awards competition in May 2016. Fingal has an excellent track record at the National Enterprise Awards, winning the overall award twice since 2005 and featuring in the “final 8” nationally on numerous occasions, most recently with Keogh’s Crisps who scooped the “Best Start-Up in Ireland” award in 2013.

Responding to the Council’s concerns regarding parking, Evans said, “I cannot understand where that comes from, because the slipway is used specifically for launching boats. None of the users from clubs have ever experienced this slipway being blocked by traffic and it’s a mystery to us all. Maybe the problem is at night, with people using the nearby pub. The idea of having to contact someone to unlock the bollard is ridiculous, as boat users will use the harbour at different times,” he concluded.

Ryan Upbeat About Labour’s Jobs Plan Labour election candidate, Brendan Ryan TD has said that creating local jobs and reaching full employment by 2018 must remain the number one priority for the North County over the next few years. He was speaking as Labour launched its ‘Standing up for Jobs’ plan, which commits to achieving full employment by 2018. Ryan told the County Leader, “In recent years, North County Brendan Ryan Dublin has borne the brunt of the economic downturn but now that the tide has turned, my priority is to continue to ensure the recovery trickles down to Fingal, so that it is evenly spread. “In recent times there has been much improvement, but we have more to do.” Also last week we have seen that the national unemployment rate has fallen from a peak of 15.2 per cent to 8.6 per cent.” He continued, “Under the Labour Jobs Plan, we are committing to reaching full employment by 2018, in other words, there will be a job for everyone who wants one. We will do this by investing in people, in skills and in the businesses that create jobs. We will invest in people through the creation of 50,000 apprenticeships and traineeships and by further increasing the minimum wage to a living wage of €11.30 per hour.” He concluded by saying, “We will invest in innovation and increase the funding available for research and development to small companies and provide better supports for start-ups. Labour will also help companies access the funding they need to grow. We will increase the scale of the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland’s lending to SMEs and protect the 12.5 per cent corporation tax rate.”

The business has grown hugely in the eight years since John set up the service sector in Kinsealy Business Park. “As soon as the recession hit, we got busier as people realised that it was a whole lot cheaper to repair a TV than to get a new one, which was good news

for our business,” said John, who is the only member of the family still involved in the business. “We are lucky insofar as we are the only business in North County Dublin that specialises in top quality TV and Hi Fi repair. We are also the only authorised service centre for Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer in North County Dublin. This is very important to us,” he said. “We get a lot of refer-

and very early black and white TVs. My father Alan and his brothers Terry and John started the business initially as a service centre in a

workshop, similar to this one. They eventually grew the business to include three retail shops, which were located in Malahide, Swords and Donaghmede, each providing a repair service carried out by the workshop in Malahide. For many people of the North County and further afield, Lawless Brothers had the reputation of being the place to go for televisions. Eventually when the original founders retired they sold the shops. John is amazed at the speed at which technology is changing and is very careful to keep up with technological changes that are much more frequent than ever. “We’re always keeping up, because we are affiliated to some of the larger manufacturers, so we’re brought in for training when something like new televisions come along, they make sure we are fully up to speed with all the changes and new parts. You just need to keep topped up. If you turned your back on this business for six months, you’d be lost - so it’s vital to keep abreast of things,” said John.

He is very aware that customer satisfaction, value for money and a job well done are paramount to the success of his business. There is no doubt that the family

values and hard working ethic that were passed on to him as a young boy, have stood him in good stead, as he prepares for the next 60 years in business.

As reported in the County Leader recently, Rush farmer Matt Foley will feature in the sixth episode of UTV Ireland’s highly successful fly-on-the-wall rural series, ‘Rare Breed: A Farming Year’, on Monday, 15th February at 8pm. In this episode, viewers will see Matt at Kilbush Nurseries in Rush, where the slow start to summer means that his tomatoes are not growing fast enough. He is at risk of losing key contracts if the weather does not improve. Rare Breed provides an in-depth look into the successes and struggles of farming life in Ireland, throughout a calendar year. A total of 18 farming families from across the country are taking part in the series, which gives a unique insight into all aspects of farming life and the people who work our land – from beef, dairy, sheep, pig and poultry farms, to tomato and organic vegetable producers. The series is unique in that it gives viewers an access-all-areas pass to the people behind one of Ireland’s biggest industries – on farms both big and small.

Spread your love in a way your partner doesn’t expect: buy a gorgeous dress for her or a elegant new suit for him, stick a note on it that says “be ready at 6 pm” and bring your loved one out for dinner.

IN THE CANDLE’S LIGHT If traditional candle light dinners are of your taste, but you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen alone, why don’t you just cook and enjoy your meal together? Plan and go to the shop, cook and do the dishes, all together. This may not seem too special but spending time together is the most important part of Valentine’s Day! For the lazy among us, eating out is always a possibility – there are hundreds of good restaurants in the whole North County area. Pick your favourite one or try something new!

HAND-MADE TREASURES A hand-made card, possibly with a personal poem, is one of the sweetest gifts and a good choice, if you are looking for a present that is not too expensive. There are millions of ideas on the web which can also be extended to be more than a card. For example, photo collages of the moments you lived together can be a nice poster or also be put on a little box in which your loved one can store personal belongings or in which you can put another surprise.

As Spring is here at last and the mornings and evenings are getting a tad longer, it is time to start getting out in the garden and getting ready for some useful work, now that the ground is starting to firm up. Similarly, your home needs a lot of TLC after the ravages of winter. In the home, the first thing that comes to

QUALITY, VALUE AND STYLE

mind is unfortunately, Spring cleaning. We all know that it has to be done, even though we try to avoid it! House cleaning, especially Spring cleaning, can be a real chore. It’s an endless cycle of cleaning and re-cleaning that never has an end in sight. As soon as you finish one cleaning project, there are ten more to take its place. While there are so many negatives when it comes to cleaning, there are also numerous positives. The first obvious one being that your house will be clean and fresh afterwards. Another positive is that it’s a great way to do some exercise. An easy way to make an easy job out of Spring cleaning is to have a few guidelines. Here are a few tips on how you can make your house cleaning or spring cleaning more manageable:

Bathroom You might think, well what is there to change about your bathroom? If you really think about it, there are many things that can make even the bathroom ready for spring. Maybe it’s time to change that old, dirty mat that you step on after you’ve taken a shower. Change it into a colourful spungy mat that doesn’t absorb water and is very easy to clean. You can repaint

the walls into bright colours and maybe even add some drawing. Sounds silly? Maybe, but why not? You will see how much more enjoyable and relaxing it is to take a shower around a pallet of colours, rather than in a boring white or vanished blue. It will sure make you feel the sense of the coming summer.

Spring Garden Spring is also the time for replanting all the flowers that died out and froze during the cold winter. So if you’re one of those who loves taking care of their garden, off you go to the closest florist, buy your favourite plants of different colours and all you’re left to do is to plant them. Before you do so, you must make sure the garden is dug and all the unwanted plants are taken out of the garden. You must get all the equipment needed for working with the soil, which needs to be dug and prepared for the plants. When you’re finished with the soil, randomly space out the plants in your preference and don’t forget to water it. Voila! Your spring garden is ready. If your gardening becomes a large project, you can secure the service of some excellent landscaping companies here in the North County, who will guarantee satisfaction at a good and fair price. Your home is the most important place, so you should take care of it as much as you take care of yourself. Make it bright and enjoyable to be in.

Feel the spring, whether you’re inside, or outside your house. Make a list of all the

house cleaning projects you want to tackle and attach a reasonable time frame to accomplish each one. Making a list will help to keep you organised, focused and on task. Be sure to make a separate list of all the cleaning supplies and equipment you may need to complete your projects. Nothing is worse than being in the

middle of scrubbing your windows to find out you have run out of paper towels or glass cleaner. Make it a family affair. Don’t be afraid to delegate some projects to family members so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming. Young children tend to love helping out, so give them small tasks to do.

Up to fairly recently, golf was viewed as the preserve of the rich and privileged that smacked of elitism. It was played by middle- aged men and women in private clubs around the country. Nowadays golf has become the fastest growing sport worldwide and one of the most sought-after leisure activities around. It is played by people of all ages, both male and female and is regarded as one of the most sought after leisure activities for people to enjoy. During the recent boom times, golf courses sprung up all over the place and the game reached a

peak in popularity among most people. Much of this popularity has come about, due to extensive TV coverage, and the emergence of

stars, some of them Irish, on a comparable footing with top film stars and pop stars. During the Celtic Tiger era, membership of golf clubs became very expensive, as demand was very high. That was all about to change dramatically, as the recession caused people to re-evaluate their priorities and golf memberships dipped. But, as they say, some good will always emerge from a recession. Golf has now become more affordable, with clubs vying for new members, resulting in incredible value for new members. With competition for green fees, many clubs now offer very attractive ‘Early Bird’ specials, where you can avail of golf and a meal at very affordable prices. Luckily, the North County is blessed with having some of the most desirable golfing real estate anywhere in Ireland, resulting in some of the marquee

golf courses located here. There is a wonderful mix of top class links courses, which are sand based courses, all dotted along our beautiful coastline, as well as superbly manicured championship standard parkland courses, all well worthwhile sampling. Memberships at these clubs are now at a very competitive level, and they offer many extra benefits, besides golf. Many golf courses in the North County area have hosted major international competitions, where golfers from all over the world, have heaped praise on the quality of these courses. Gone are the days, when bumpy greens and poor fairways were the order of the day. Nowadays, our courses compare more than favourably with the finest to be found anywhere. There is a wonderful mix of top

quality links courses and beautifully manicured parkland courses that have hosted major international competitions. These courses provide a stern test for the best professionals, but are also fair and can be enjoyed by the enthusiastic amateur. However, not all people were drawn to golf. Teenagers seemed to be immune to the attractions of this great game. It was considered as not ‘sexy’ to be seen carrying golf clubs around. Football and other traditional sports were seen as the popular pursuits. This was all about to change in a dramatic way. The tremendous success of Irish golfers, most notably Rory McIlroy brought the game to everyone, including teenagers. It was now the game to play and carrying your golf clubs was now ‘cool’. Padraig Harrington led the way for Irish golf, with three Majors, including back to back British Open titles. He paved the way for the likes of Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, and Rory McIlroy, all Major winners. Their success propelled Ireland to the forefront of world golf. The contribution of Paul McGinley to the success of Europe in the last Ryder Cup , has also enhanced Ireland’s status on the golf stage worldwide. Another star who has caught the eye is Shane Lowry, who is

also destined for major honours. The continuing contribution of our golfers to successful Ryder Cup teams has been immeasurable, and has been a contributing factor to the growth of the game here. Here we must also recognise the late great Christy O’Connor Jnr for his wonderful contribution to Irish golf.

But it was Rory McIlroy who has really caught the eye and the former World Number 1 has given golf the impetus it so badly needed. This affable young man was about to send golf into orbit. Now, young boys and girls regard it as sexy to play golf and to be seen to play. Young girls see him as a pin-up and young boys view

him as a role model to be copied. There is real optimism that we will win an Olympic gold medal for Ireland later this year, with golf now included in the Games. In recent years, Ireland has hosted the Ryder Cup and it’s female equivalent, the Solheim Cup and this has put Ireland to the forefront as a golfing destination.

Remembered Joy Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free! I follow the plan God laid for me. I saw His face, I heard His call, I took His hand and left it all... I could not stay another day, To love, to laugh, to work or play; Tasks left undone must stay that way. And if my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss... Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss. My life’s been full, I’ve savoured much: Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief Don’t shorten yours with undue grief. Be not burdened with tears of sorrow, Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.
