Hennessy Launches Attack On Elected Reps A candidate in the upcoming local elections, has launched a blistering attack on existing county councillors, over their lack of action in having Swords Main Street and the Castle regenerated. Fianna Fail candidate for Swords, John Hennessy was furious at the fact that the present council has had five years to do something, yet nothing has been achieved to date. Speaking to the County Leader, a fuming Hennessy said, “I have knocked on over 6,000 homes in Swords alone and one of the main items that resonates with them, is the embarrassment they feel about Swords town centre and the way it is. In August 2009, Ryan’s pub was pulled down, and in the intervening time, there has been absolutely no action, drive or ambition to make Swords a decent place to live in,” he said. “It just sickens me, when I hear existing councillors, who have been there for five years and more, talking about the town centre of Swords and about regenerating it, just as an election is looming. What have they been doing for the last number of years? Nothing’s been done and

By Patrick Finnegan all we are left with is the condition of the town centre That’s an embarrassment to the county and it’s a disgrace, and has been for years. The net effect is that businesses have closed down and people haven’t got the town centre to enjoy, that they should have.” He then said, “I’m walking around estates, where people are cutting their grass and keeping their areas nice and neat, and the one area they have not got control over is the town centre and the Castle, and the Council have manifestly failed in this regard and it’s an absolute disgrace, and should not be allowed to happen again. I challenge any of these councillors, who have been there for the past five or ten years, and are now talking about the regeneration of the town centre, or the opening of the Castle. I can’t understand it and It just beggars belief.” Hennessy continued by saying, “One million American tourists visited the island of Ireland last year, and I would guess that between 70 and 80 per cent of them came in through Dublin

airport. I would say that we got less than a handful of these visitors to come to Swords. Let’s call a spade a spade here. The reason for this is that Swords town centre is in atrocious condition, and is an embarrassment to the entire region and that’s the responsibility of the Council, and that’s what I intend changing.” When asked what he expected the local authority to do, he said. The Castle needs to be opened up and the two or three remaining buildings should be CPO’d and immediately knocked down and the area opened up, and have somewhere pleasant like Avoca. This, in turn, would create businesses around it, because it would bring a footfall to the place. I was delighted to see families enjoying the

Collins told the County Leader, “This narrow strip of pathway is located outside the home of the late Mrs Philomena Boylan, and mothers with prams and buggies have to move out on to the roadway, to pass this section of pathway, which is too narrow for them to negotiate. This applies to all pedestrians, as this section of pathway contracts to zero at this point,” he said. Rush Man’s Extraordinary Gift Rush man, Rhys Byrne has been blessed with a most unusual gift, he is an exorcist. Whilst this may appear to be a glamorous enough gift to have, Rhys explained to the County Leader, how he came to have this gift, and some the more practical sides of exorcism.

By Patrick Finnegan Pictured here is River Valley Scout Leader, Dave Clarke, with fellow scout group members: Jean Higgens, Sahron Chapman, Bernie Reddy, Louis Bebbington, Katelym Delaney, Darragh Ball, Rhys Mahony, Suzanne Kavanagh, Ronan Shivenan, Melissa Care and County Mayor, Cllr Kieran Dennison at the awards presentation night in Swords last week.

Special Awards For Swords Scouts By Rachel Wallace Last Wednesday saw the gathering of this 171st Swords River Valley Scouts group to the County Hall in Swords for a very special ceremony. There were six very special beavers who received Chief Scout awards from County Mayor, Cllr Kieran Dennison. Also there on the night to award the children was Stephen Peppard, head of Corporate Services at the County Council, Bernie Reddy who is the Scouts County Commissioner and Dave Clarke, the group’s Scout Leader. Speaking at the event, Stephen Peppard and Kieran Dennison mentioned their

intent to see through long standing plans to expand Swords Scouts and other scout groups within the North County. They both agreed that Scouts is a hugely important organisation for young people in local communities, and they said they had it as one of their top priorities to have a Regional Scouts Building established in the North County in the near future. Peppard mentioned a site off the M1 which has been selected for this purpose built Regional Scouts Den, which will hopefully come to fruition over the coming months. The young scouts in attendance where very enthusiastic about these upcoming plans, and the Mayor chimed in and said: “the North County is one of the best places to be a scout in, as we have land, sea and sand.” He never had the opportunity to become a scout himself, but he became an honorary scout for the evening, when he was presented with his very own scouts neck tie!

Rhys (19), says he has been given a special gift that helps him overcome devils and ghosts that possess people and haunt houses. Since I was very young, I always knew that I had different senses to anybody else. I had the ability to see and speak with spirits since I was a child. He explained, “People can become possessed by a demon without even realising it. As I got older, I spent more time working on it, because I used to see spirits, who came to me and frightened me. Whatever form they passed away in, was the way they appeared to me,” he said. When he was 15, Rhys fell into a coma, and it was this that had a defining effect on him. “When I awoke from the coma, I was more aware and I knew things that I didn’t know previously. It was then that I started working with demonics, which people regards as devils. Rhys, who is a Buddhist, trained to be a monk in India and his exorcisms are totally different to those of anyone else. “I don’t us the bible or crucifix, I use one to one approach, face on

Designed as a community space to meet the educational, cultural, and leisure needs of the public, Ann Marie Farrelly, Director of Services, told the County Leader: “This new project is unique as it is the first co-location of a public library with a community and leisure centre in Ireland, thereby maximising the efficient use of existing space. This allows us to deliver a sustainable community library to the residents on the in Donabate and Portrane.” “I am very proud that the County Council has one of the highest library memberships in the country. We also have one of the most innovative and proactive library services,” said the County Mayor. Already a great success, the new library opened its doors on Monday April 14th last and within the first fortnight had 2124 visitors and recorded 3,640 transactions, “This library, housed within the Donabate Portrane Community & Leisure Centre and located in the centre of the schools campus in Donabate, is set to become the heart of the community, accessible to all,”Yvonne O’Brien, Senior Executive Librarian with Fingal concluded.

without the use of books, or such. What I do is completely unique,” he said. He is inundated with requests from people looking for help, and as he explained, he does not look for financial rewards. “I do this to help people and the payment I get, is to see the satisfaction on their faces, after the demons have left. This is in accordance with the Buddhist teachings,” said Rhys, who assesses each situation to find the reason for any possessions, in case they have been induced by medication, or substance abuse, or may just be in the person’s head. “A lot of people will be too afraid to come out openly and say they are possessed, as they fear most people won’t believe them. I can help these people by doing a reading on them, finding out what’s troubling them and then drawing the demon out. There has never been a situation, where I was unable to help a person,” said Rhys, who sometimes regards his gift as a burden, such is the amount of work he has to do.

County Mayor, Cllr. Kieran Dennison is pictured opening the Multipurpose Youth facility in Rush with County Manager, Paul Reid Fintan Price, Vice Chairperson Rush Community Council, local councillor, Tom O'Leary (FG), Rush teens and Local Community representatives.

Youth Facility Officially Launched In Rush Last Thursday, May 1st was a big day for the youth of Rush, with the official launch of Rush Multipurpose Youth Facility (Martins Shop) by County Mayor, Cllr Kieran Dennison. The event was a vibrant one, with lots of attractions and young people displaying their talents on the day. The Mayor told the County Leader: “For over a hundred years, Martin’s served the people of Rush and I am delighted that this building will retain its place at the heart of the community serving the needs of the youth of the area.”

This project was born in response to the identified needs concerning the youth of the area. The primary vision for this building was to act as a youth facility and with this vision in mind, a committee was formed to raise funds to renovate it. In 2010, a funding application was made, which was successful, and this funding was used to renovate the downstairs portion of the building. The community office of the Council supports the newly formed facility committee and is assisting in developing a wide range of appropriate programmes identified by the local community with priority given to youth centred groups, such as: the local brass band, after school club, breakfast club, supervised study, art classes, youth council and Satellite Counselling Services.

Organ Donation Awareness Day At Swords School On Thursday last, 1st May, students and teachers from St Finian’s Community School in Swords held three separate events, for the purpose of raising money and awareness of organ donation and for the Alan Feeley Trust, in conjunction with the Irish Kidney Association. The Alan Feeley Trust was set up this year, after the sudden death of the young Mayo PE teacher. Alan was an organ donor and his organs saved the lives of five people, and was a friend of one of the teachers at the school. One of the events involved a 25 kilometre sponsored cycle, in which 12 pupils, two teachers and two members of the local Gardai participated in the fun cycle. A great sense of occasion was evident at the school, as the cyclists headed off on their way. The other events included a cinema outing and a stationary cycle. Colin White from the Irish Kidney Association was also in attendance at the school, where he delivered a talk about organ donation to the students. In all, the staggering amount of €1,180 was raised on the day, as a result of the wonderful commitment of the students.

The Rush Daffodil Day Committee want to say Thank you to their volunteers and to everyone who supported their events for Daffodil Day recently. To date, with their various fundraisers in Rush, they have raised the fantastic amount of €25,096.77.

By Cathal Boland The European election campaign has only just kicked off here in Ireland, but the battle for power across Europe has been in full play for some time. The projections show both the EPP and the PES very close in the number of MEPs which they will return after the election. Their lead candidates, Schulz and Junker are fighting hard to become the President of the Commission. This job is expected to go to the candidate of the party with the highest number of MEPs returned. The Parliament must vote on the appointment and the smaller groupings may join forces with either the EPP or PES, to decide the issue or cause both Junker and Schulz to do a deal. Both candidates are campaigning across Europe and appearing in televised debates setting out their vision for Europe. Parliament has taken the unusual step of passing a vote of censure on Martin Schulz, the Parliament’s President, for using his office to push through the appointment of close aides to civil service positions and of using his office improperly in his campaign. Junker is moving to a position of embracing reform and says he will find a way to keep the UK within the union and deal with their concerns. This bigger picture does not appear to be a feature of the election here at home. There seems little or no interest among the voters in respect of the management of Europe. So it seems the election will be fought just on home issues. One way or the other, MEPs will be elected on the 23rd and your vote can help decide who they are.

Mulville Determined To Provide Strong Voice Paul Mulville has announced his intention to run as an Independent candidate in the Swords electoral area, and has vowed to provide a fresh new approach to politics in the ward. Mulville, who is a Portrane native, has an intimate knowledge of the needs and concerns of residents on the peninsula, and is clearly very devoted to making sure that these concerns are fully addressed at Council level. Speaking to the County Leader, Mulville outlined the difference he will make to residents here, and in other areas of the ward, if elected. “I have been involved for many years in local community

McGuire Hits Out At Derelict Buildings In Portrane Local councillor, Gerry McGuire (Lab) has hit out at the HSE over eight houses, in their possession, that are left boarded up in Portrane. The houses in question are located on Portrane Avenue on the main thoroughfare up to St Ita’s Hospital. McGuire told the County Leader, “It’s a disgrace to see eight houses boarded up, particularly as we are in a housing crisis in the Swords electoral ward. A number of these properties have been idle for almost 20 years, and that is an absolute scandal in this day and age, with people on long housing lists. I am now asking the HSE to evaluate these properties and to repair them and let them out again for rental purposes. Either that, or dispose of them to the local authority, where they can be brought into use for much needed accommodation in the community,” he said. These houses are listed and have been the scene of anti

social behaviour, where an attempt was made to burn one of them down. Tiles have been removed from some of the roofs, along with other damage. McGuire insists, “It’s urgent that we get these houses back to an occupiable state. I believe the HSE should hand them over to the Council, if they decide not to renovate them. Councillor Gerry McGuire (Lab) is pictured outside the row of derelict buildSome of the resi- ings on Portrane Avenue. dents on this estate have been tenants of the HSE for up to 40 years, and they should be afforded the opportunity to purchase their homes, because they have effected improvements, like central heating and weatherproof windows, as well as the maintanance of the houses.” “These boarded up houses are a real eyesore for people using this road, and it is unfair to residents here to have to put up with it. It’s another ghost estate. within what was once a very vibrant living area,” he concluded angrily. Balbriggan, Ballyboughal,

More Concern Expressed Over Sale Of Portmarnock Land Local councillor, Judy Dunne (Lab), has called on the County Manager to register Legal Caution, to protect public lands at the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links. Portmarnock Community Association have also expressed their concern over the purposed sale of the lands, fearing that they will become privatised, if suitable action is not taken by the County Council. Seamus Horan, PRO Portmarnock Community Association told the County Leader: “Portmarnock Community Association are deeply concerned over the inclusion of public lands in the sale by NAMA of the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links,” he said. “The lands have been in public use for many years, but the Judy Dunne arrangements for the takeover of the land by Fingal County Council have never been completed and now they are shown as part of the hotel property in the sales brochure produced by the estate agents, selling the property on behalf of NAMA, which we’re concerned about,” he continued. “These lands include a section of Golf Links Road which is the public access road to Portmarnock Golf Club, and to a very popular car park serving the Velvet Strand, and also contains a section of land that is included in the Baldoyle Bay Special Protection Area.” “The Portmarnock Community Association are calling on all parties involved to speedily conclude arrangements for the takeover of the land by the County Council, and to ensure that these public lands do not become privatised by default,” he concluded.

Newman Calls For New Pathway In Swords Estate Parents of school going children in Castleview estate in Swords, have expressed their concerns about the lack of a footpath, leading from the estate to the nearby primary schools, to ensure safe passage for the children. Resident, Joe Billings contacted local election candidate for Swords, Joe Newman (NP), in the hope that this situation can be resolved as soon as possible. He told the County Leader about how this problem is impacting on the safety of children in the area. “We moved in here when the estate was built in 2001. However, the planners, in their wisdom, never put paths through the green. Aesthetically it looks very nice, with trees and a break between houses. However, when you have kids

trying to get across from one side to the other with no pathway, they have to walk over a green area, which can be wet and mucky at times,” he said. “People pushing a buggy are forced to walk on the road with heavy traffic, particularly at rush hour in the morning. People accessing the walkway leading to the two local schools, from the estate, have to cross a busy section of road, with obvious dangers. Otherwise, they have to walk across wet, mucky ground, where the children’s feet get wet, and buggy wheels get stuck. All they have to do is to connect two pathways, to solve this problem - a distance of no more that 20 yards,” he said. Election candidate, Joe Newman agreed, “I think this is an important

safety issue and is another example of bad planning and I’m calling on the Council to make contact with the Residents Association to resolve this issue, before the next school term. It won’t cost too much money to resolve this problem, and I would like them to come an evaluate the situation, before a tragic accident occurs,” said Newman.

Boland Calls For Historic Summer School

Students from Colaiste Choilm, Swords added their voices and ideas to a Student Council Conference, hosted by the Edmund Rice Schools Trust in the Red Cow Hotel on Wednesday, 30th April. Amongst the topics discussed on the day were: the role of student councils in 97 Edmund Rice schools nationwide, best practice and “how leaders are ordinary people doing extraordinary things”, fundraising fatigue in schools, and how to “keep the buzz going”, celebrating diversity, the importance of student to student anti bullying campaigns, listening with eyes and heart, as well as both ears, and giving students a real voice especially those with a smaller voice. Continued from page 1 he joined the British Army and was killed in action in September 1916.” “Thomas Ashe, a Kerry native was the most militarily successful Easter 1916 Commandant. He was a national school principal at Corduff, Lusk. He founded the Black Raven Pipe Band and established a branch of the Volunteers, whom he lead in the Battle of Ashbourne. He went on to be the President of the IRB, the defacto President of the Irish Republic. After the general release in 1917, he went on hunger strike, during which he died as a result of force feeding.” “Both men were nationalist, one a poet the other a musician. These were men of conscience who made a real contribution. Both died for their beliefs. They just died on different battle fields. These are two great men of vision, of culture, of action, men who wanted the same thing. Both died seeking it in different ways.” Boland concluded by saying, “Should I be fortunate to be elected on May 23rd, I intend formally calling on the incoming council to establish, and host an annual Kettle Ashe Summer School. This would be a fitting tribute to these great men, while providing a perfect platform for men and women of all traditions to join together in celebration of the role that Fingal played in both struggles. Such an occasion embraces all traditions and allows all to recognise the contribution made a hundred years ago.”

Investing money in to the property you already have can help not only increase the value of your home, but can also help reignite the love you once had for your abode. So put the boxes away and ‘don’t move, improve,’ and you’ll soon wonder why you ever thought about moving at all.

Living Room During Springtime and early summer, your living room should have a lot of space. Therefore, get those old books and magazines out. The carpet may be dark and dirty after the winter, so its best to get a new one in the colour you would prefer. It is, however, advisable to leave it very bright and warm coloured. This would create a strong sense of Spring / Summer and would surely make you feel happier. If there is old furniture that takes up lots of space, replace it with something smaller and brighter. Don’t forget, a living room is a place for resting, keep it as open as possible.

Bedroom We all have those times, even during This time of year, when we don’t feel like going anywhere and just want to spend a lazy day in our room. Replace the old heavy curtains with light blinds, which would make your room seem bigger. You don’t have to get rid of the winter blinds, just store

them. Also, throw some colourful pillows on your bed. After the long cold winter, your walls might need to be re-painted, so you can pick the colour and go

ahead with it. Include all of the family members, and apart from the work being done much quicker, you will also have a load of fun. You can also get rid of those old clothes that you haven’t worn for few seasons now, and leave all that space for new dresses and shirts.

Kids Stuff The little people in our lives can’t always help as much as we would like them to. However

there are ways that you can help them, to help you. Provide your children with storage boxes and shelves to store toys, games and other things they should put

away once play time is over. Make this a part of the bedtime routine. Just before it’s time to brush their teeth or them a bed time story. It’s easy to give children’s bedrooms make overs. Changing curtains, light shades and duvets covers which include your children’s favourite charters can be very easy and also expensive. If you decide you’re going to change things in your children’s room’s and can’t do it all at once try adding a new feature each week and telling

your little darlings this is a reward for them helping to keep all their toys and belongings stored. Another great idea is for you to decorate your children’s

room with their art work and family photos.

Garden Clean Up After a long harsh winter, people are now suffering from cabin fever in their attempts to get into the garden and do some much needed tidying up. Winter time can be very harsh on gardens, but now, with the weather finally picking up, now is your opportunity to extend some tender loving care and get your garden looking great again.

Nothing says spring / summer is here like your garden. It’s time to dig out those spades and shovels and really make your garden shine with some new plants and flowers. For those who like DIY, but without as much hassle, it’s best to go and buy your potted plants in your favourite spring colours and plant them as they are. A visit to your local garden centre will ensure that you can avail of the necessary flowers, shrubs and trees to give your garden that wow factor. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours and garden design. Your local garden centre will be only too pleased to provide you with the necessary advice, as

well as the plants needed for this purpose. You will find all the supplies, materials, fertilisers and machinery you need to do a great job in your local garden store, so you won’t have to go miles to spruce up the garden. Even just cleaning up all the weeds and old plants will really make a difference. When planning a Garden Clean up, it is important to plan ahead. Make sure you have the proper tools to

Viking Wedding In Swords A wedding with a difference took place at Swords Town Park on Thursday last, when Barry Gaynor and Alison O’Rourke tied the knot. What made this wedding different is that Barry and Alison, both from Swords, got special permission to have their civil ceremony wedding held in the Chapel in Swords Castle. Both are part of the Fingal Living History Society, who have organised the Fire Parade in Swords and transformed Swords Town Park into a Viking village, much to the amazement of locals, who enjoyed their hard work last weekend. The reception was held in a large Viking tent in the park, which was attended by family, friends and crew, working on the Viking project. The happy couple are pictured at the entrance to Swords Castle.

Duffy Is New Swords Tidy Towns Chairperson Local election candidate for the Swords Ward, Ken Duffy (GP), has been announced as the new Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns. He got in touch with the County Leader on behalf of the Swords group, to pay tribute to former Chairperson, the late Des Becton, and to encourage others to get involved in the group if they wish. “As the new Chairperson of Swords Tidy Towns, I would like to convey on behalf of our members, how much Des Becton is sorely missed by us all. Our thoughts are always with his family, and his memory will always hold a special place in our hearts. I have inherited a very large pair of shoes, and filling them will be a mammoth task indeed,” he told the County Leader. “We both served on the Swords Community Council the year Swords was designated a Litter Black Spot. This news jolted us into setting up the Swords Tidy Towns. From the start, Des was the driving force behind its success. His tireless energy inspired and drove us to achieve success after success,

culminating this year in Swords being designated Clean To Above European Norms,” he said. “I would like to take this opportunity to encourage new members, young and old, to come along and join us in our cleaner community work.
