Hennessy Launches Attack On Elected Reps A candidate in the upcoming local elections, has launched a blistering attack on existing county councillors, over their lack of action in having Swords Main Street and the Castle regenerated. Fianna Fail candidate for Swords, John Hennessy was furious at the fact that the present council has had five years to do something, yet nothing has been achieved to date. Speaking to the County Leader, a fuming Hennessy said, “I have knocked on over 6,000 homes in Swords alone and one of the main items that resonates with them, is the embarrassment they feel about Swords town centre and the way it is. In August 2009, Ryan’s pub was pulled down, and in the intervening time, there has been absolutely no action, drive or ambition to make Swords a decent place to live in,” he said. “It just sickens me, when I hear existing councillors, who have been there for five years and more, talking about the town centre of Swords and about regenerating it, just as an election is looming. What have they been doing for the last number of years? Nothing’s been done and

Rush Man’s Extraordinary Gift Rush man, Rhys Byrne has been blessed with a most unusual gift, he is an exorcist. Whilst this may appear to be a glamorous enough gift to have, Rhys explained to the County Leader, how he came to have this gift, and some the more practical sides of exorcism.

Special Awards For Swords Scouts By Rachel Wallace Last Wednesday saw the gathering of this 171st Swords River Valley Scouts group to the County Hall in Swords for a very special ceremony. There were six very special beavers who received Chief Scout awards from County Mayor, Cllr Kieran Dennison. Also there on the night to award the children was Stephen Peppard, head of Corporate Services at the County Council, Bernie Reddy who is the Scouts County Commissioner and Dave Clarke, the group’s Scout Leader. Speaking at the event, Stephen Peppard and Kieran Dennison mentioned their

intent to see through long standing plans to expand Swords Scouts and other scout groups within the North County. They both agreed that Scouts is a hugely important organisation for young people in local communities, and they said they had it as one of their top priorities to have a Regional Scouts Building established in the North County in the near future. Peppard mentioned a site off the M1 which has been selected for this purpose built Regional Scouts Den, which will hopefully come to fruition over the coming months. The young scouts in attendance where very enthusiastic about these upcoming plans, and the Mayor chimed in and said: “the North County is one of the best places to be a scout in, as we have land, sea and sand.” He never had the opportunity to become a scout himself, but he became an honorary scout for the evening, when he was presented with his very own scouts neck tie!

Rhys (19), says he has been given a special gift that helps him overcome devils and ghosts that possess people and haunt houses. Since I was very young, I always knew that I had different senses to anybody else. I had the ability to see and speak with spirits since I was a child. He explained, “People can become possessed by a demon without even realising it. As I got older, I spent more time working on it, because I used to see spirits, who came to me and frightened me. Whatever form they passed away in, was the way they appeared to me,” he said. When he was 15, Rhys fell into a coma, and it was this that had a defining effect on him. “When I awoke from the coma, I was more aware and I knew things that I didn’t know previously. It was then that I started working with demonics, which people regards as devils. Tyrone to face their fears in a bid to raise funds for North Dublin Chernobyl Children International (CCI). They signed up to the Chernobyl “Head for Heights Challenge” which took place at an activity centre in Ballygawley. The event was organised by North Dublin CCI, an outreach group for Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children International, officially founded in 1991, five years after the Chernobyl disaster. Every year, North Dublin CCI fundraise to help children affected by the disaster. The money raised

Youth Facility Officially Launched In Rush Last Thursday, May 1st was a big day for the youth of Rush, with the official launch of Rush Multipurpose Youth Facility (Martins Shop) by County Mayor, Cllr Kieran Dennison. The event was a vibrant one, with lots of attractions and young people displaying their talents on the day. The Mayor told the County Leader: “For over a hundred years, Martin’s served the people of Rush and I am delighted that this building will retain its place at the heart of the community serving the needs of the youth of the area.”

This project was born in response to the identified needs concerning the youth of the area. The primary vision for this building was to act as a youth facility and with this vision in mind, a committee was formed to raise funds to renovate it. In 2010, a funding application was made, which was successful, and this funding was used to renovate the downstairs portion of the building. The community office of the Council supports the newly formed facility committee and is assisting in developing a wide range of appropriate programmes identified by the local community with priority given to youth centred groups, such as: the local brass band, after school club, breakfast club, supervised study, art classes, youth council and Satellite Counselling Services.

Preparations Underway For Balbriggan Summerfest Preparations are well underway for this year’s Balbriggan Summerfest which promises to be just as good and exciting this year. The dates for this year are Sunday 25th May to Sunday 1st June with plenty of fun filled activities for all the family. The first event on is the annual ‘Balbriggan’s Got Talent.’ Open auditions will take place on Saturday 10th May from 11am to 4pm in the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan, and the organisers are looking for all kinds of acts, from, singing, dancing, comedy, magic, bands and more. Organ Donation Awareness Day At Swords School On Thursday last, 1st May, students and teachers from St Finian’s Community School in Swords held three separate events, for the purpose of raising money and awareness of organ donation and for the Alan Feeley Trust, in conjunction with the Irish Kidney Association. The Alan Feeley Trust was set up this year, after the sudden death of the young Mayo PE teacher. Alan was an organ donor and his organs saved the lives of five people, and was a friend of one of the teachers at the school. One of the events involved a 25 kilometre sponsored cycle, in which 12 pupils, two teachers and two members of the local Gardai participated in the fun cycle. A great sense of occasion was evident at the school, as the cyclists headed off on their way. The other events included a cinema outing and a stationary cycle. Colin White from the Irish Kidney Association was also in attendance at the school, where he delivered a talk about organ donation to the students. In all, the staggering amount of €1,180 was raised on the day, as a result of the wonderful commitment of the students.

By Cathal Boland The European election campaign has only just kicked off here in Ireland, but the battle for power across Europe has been in full play for some time. The projections show both the EPP and the PES very close in the number of MEPs which they will return after the election. Their lead candidates, Schulz and Junker are fighting hard to become the President of the Commission. This job is expected to go to the candidate of the party with the highest number of MEPs returned. The Parliament must vote on the appointment and the smaller groupings may join forces with either the EPP or PES, to decide the issue or cause both Junker and Schulz to do a deal. Both candidates are campaigning across Europe and appearing in televised debates setting out their vision for Europe. Parliament has taken the unusual step of passing a vote of censure on Martin Schulz, the Parliament’s President, for using his office to push through the appointment of close aides to civil service positions and of using his office improperly in his campaign. Junker is moving to a position of embracing reform and says he will find a way to keep the UK within the union and deal with their concerns. This bigger picture does not appear to be a feature of the election here at home. There seems little or no interest among the voters in respect of the management of Europe. So it seems the election will be fought just on home issues. One way or the other, MEPs will be elected on the 23rd and your vote can help decide who they are.

McGuire Hits Out At Derelict Buildings In Portrane Local councillor, Gerry McGuire (Lab) has hit out at the HSE over eight houses, in their possession, that are left boarded up in Portrane. The houses in question are located on Portrane Avenue on the main thoroughfare up to St Ita’s Hospital. McGuire told the County Leader, “It’s a disgrace to see eight houses boarded up, particularly as we are in a housing crisis in the Swords electoral ward. A number of these properties have been idle for almost 20 years, and that is an absolute scandal in this day and age, with people on long housing lists. I am now asking the HSE to evaluate these properties and to repair them and let them out again for rental purposes. Either that, or dispose of them to the local authority, where they can be brought into use for much needed accommodation in the community,” he said. These houses are listed and have been the scene of anti

More Concern Expressed Over Sale Of Portmarnock Land Local councillor, Judy Dunne (Lab), has called on the County Manager to register Legal Caution, to protect public lands at the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links. Portmarnock Community Association have also expressed their concern over the purposed sale of the lands, fearing that they will become privatised, if suitable action is not taken by the County Council. Newman Calls For New Pathway In Swords Estate Parents of school going children in Castleview estate in Swords, have expressed their concerns about the lack of a footpath, leading from the estate to the nearby primary schools, to ensure safe passage for the children. Resident, Joe Billings contacted local election candidate for Swords, Joe Newman (NP), in the hope that this situation can be resolved as soon as possible. He told the County Leader about how this problem is impacting on the safety of children in the area. “We moved in here when the estate was built in 2001. However, the planners, in their wisdom, never put paths through the green. Aesthetically it looks very nice, with trees and a break between houses. However, when you have kids

trying to get across from one side to the other with no pathway, they have to walk over a green area, which can be wet and mucky at times,” he said. “People pushing a buggy are forced to walk on the road with heavy traffic, particularly at rush hour in the morning. People accessing the walkway leading to the two local schools, from the estate, have to cross a busy section of road, with obvious dangers. Otherwise, they have to walk across wet, mucky ground, where the children’s feet get wet, and buggy wheels get stuck. All they have to do is to connect two pathways, to solve this problem - a distance of no more that 20 yards,” he said. Election candidate, Joe Newman agreed, “I think this is an important

safety issue and is another example of bad planning and I’m calling on the Council to make contact with the Residents Association to resolve this issue, before the next school term. The Seamus Ennis Arts Centre will undertake a very special project, as part of Voluntary Arts Week this month. The aim of Voluntary Arts Week is to get people involved in arts and crafts in their local community, and The Seamus Ennis Centre has been requesting that local people get knitting, and decorate the wonderful Red Chestnut tree with their colourful knitted squares and showcase their talents. Knitters can knit at home, or take part in the Centre’s Cottage Café on Mondays from 10am to 11.30am, where knitters are welcome, and can avail of a special tea and scone offer. Decoration of the tree will take place on 9th May and the decorations will remain on the tree throughout voluntary Arts Week until 18th May. Donabate Scouts Raise Funds For Local Group The Donabate and Portrane Sea Scouts Group recently took park in a 5K sponsored walk to raise funds for the local Senior Citizens and the scout group. All involved assembled at the Parish Hall in Donabate and walked to Newbridge House and back. The children raised €595, of which €500 was for the Senior Citizens and €95 went to the Scouts Group. A spokesperson from the Donabate and Portrane Scout Group told the County Leader that they would like to say thanks to all the children and leaders who took part and a big thank you to all who sponsored them. The group also want to say a very big thanks to the Senior Citizens Committee, who provided goody bags to the children and had lovely refreshments for the leaders, when the walk was completed.

McGuire Welcomes Progress On Portrane Erosion Swords councillor, Gerry McGuire (Lab), recently attended a meeting in the County Hall on the issue of the coastal erosion issue in Portrane. Among those attending were representatives of the coastal protection group and Burrow residents, who were meeting with RPS Consultants and County Council officials. The purpose of the meeting was to afford the stakeholders the opportunity to have an input into addressing the issue of coastal erosion at

Portrane beach. “I have been issued with detailed design drawings that show the work being proposed by the County Council and have passed these on to the residents,” McGuire told the County Leader. “The plans include extensive replenishment and protection works to be carried out on the dunes by the Council. Viking Wedding In Swords A wedding with a difference took place at Swords Town Park on Thursday last, when Barry Gaynor and Alison O’Rourke tied the knot. What made this wedding different is that Barry and Alison, both from Swords, got special permission to have their civil ceremony wedding held in the Chapel in Swords Castle. Both are part of the Fingal Living History Society, who have organised the Fire Parade in Swords and transformed Swords Town Park into a Viking village, much to the amazement of locals, who enjoyed their hard work last weekend. The reception was held in a large Viking tent in the park, which was attended by family, friends and crew, working on the Viking project.
