‘Star Wars’ Accused Cleared Our Story Of Murder In Swords Prompts Wonderful Gesture The County Leader, your number 1 local newspaper has played a prominent role in a wonderful gesture by a Malahide based pilot last week.
By Patrick Finnegan In our edition of 3rd March, we ran a story about a Malahide man, Michael Leahy, who was recently recognised as Ireland’s best ‘Public Transport Ambassador’ Twenty-eight year old Michael, who attends Prosper Fingal Day Service in Swords, an umbrella group for people with intellectual disabilities, was chosen to be Ireland’s best ‘Public Transport Ambassador’ by the National Transport Authority (NTA). A room in his home has been converted to accommodate his impressive collection of model trains, buses and aeroplanes.
It was then that fellow Malahide man and Aer Lingus pilot, Captain Conor Keeling entered the picture. He had a surprise in store, when he was presented Michael with a 50 year old model aircraft, which had never been opened until now. It had never been put together and was still in its original box. It was presented to him by his father, Bill Keeling, who comes from a well-known Balbriggan family. Conor said, “When I read the article about Michael in the County Leader, I knew then that I had found a new home for my model aeroplane. I was very impressed with the work that Michael has done as National Transport Ambassador, and I knew then that I had found a new home for the aeroplane. My father bought it for me when I was about
six years old and it ‘s now about 50 years old, the same age as me,” said Conor. I wasn’t sure how to go about putting it together, and I thought it would be good to give it to Michael, as he would know all about that and provide it with a good home. It’s a Fokker Friendship model plane and Aer Lingus was the first airline in the world to use these planes.” I decided to ring Kate Madden here in Prosper Fingal on North Street in Swords and she was delighted, as am I that it has now found a good home,” said Conor. Michael was thrilled to receive such a wonderful gift and he invited fellow Malahide man, Conor over to his home to see his collection, an invitation which was gladly accepted.

Local Reps At War Major Fundraiser For Over Aer Lingus Little Molly In Balbriggan The sale of the Government’s 25.1 per cent stake in Aer Lingus, which had been anticipated for many months, has caused deep division among local public representatives in the North County. Government party politicians are lined up in support of the deal, while opposition politicians take the view that the deal is harmful for both the company and the local economy. The deep divisions between the opposing parties came to a head, with all sides throwing accusations in all directions. Opposition representatives accused their Government opponents of selling out and forgetting about retired staff, who they claim have suffered unduly. Fianna Fail senator, Darragh O’Brien said it’s a slap in the face to long-serving members who are being sacrificed for the Government’s immediate interests. They also claim
that the Government sold a perfectly viable business for much less than it is worth claiming that Labour had sold out on he sale, to the detriment of the local economy. Clare Daly TD said that the Government parties should be ashamed of the part they played in selling out the company The Government parties fought back by saying that the deal is an excellent move for the country, which is good for Aer Lingus, good for Dublin and particularly good for the North County, while slamming the role that the last Government played in the demise of Aer Lingus, when they had full control of the company. They also claimed that the decision will see 150 net jobs being created by the end of 2016, with the net number rising to 635 by 2020. See our full story on page 17
A White Collar Boxing event will be held in aid of the Molly McNally Miracle Trust on Friday, 12th June at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan starting at 8pm. The event is a major fundraiser in the search for treatment for little Molly McNally, the six year-old Balbriggan girl, who suffers from Stage Two Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Molly has captured the hearts of people all across the North County and beyond, as she Molly McNally bravely fights her illness. Her parents, Gerry and Emma have done extraordinary work in organising funds for Molly, as well as bringing her to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin for treatment on an almost daily basis. Such is the popularity of little Molly, that this event is expected to be a sell out. Tickets cost €20 and tickets can be bought at the door. Tony Finnegan is main sponsor and if any companies would like to sponsor a boxing vest, complete with their name and contact details, they can do so for as little as €100. They can contact Tony at 087-7017694 if they wish to avail of this sponsorship deal. Molly’s father Gerry has reported that Molly is continuing satisfactorily with her treatment and she will have scans all this week in Crumlin Hospital, and results are expected the following week.

Swords Girl Stars At Digital Learning Conference Swords girl, Hannah Leonard (16), who is a student at Fingal Community College, looks certain to have a very bright future ahead of her, if her expertise at Maths is anything to go by. Hannah, who is in Transition Year at the Swords school played a very prominent role in the success of Fingal Community College in the secondary schools section of Mathletes, where they retained the AllIreland title they won last year. On top of that, she played a very prominent role in
By Patrick Finnegan helping to mentor Holy Family SNS in River Valley to winning the All-Ireland title for primary schools. She also holds Maths sessions there every Friday. Her achievements in this field did not go unnoticed, as Hannah explains. “Earlier this year, I was asked by Kelly Kirkpatrick of Mathletes to write an article about my maths experience and how it has benefited me. I was then approached by my science teacher, Ms Scanlon, who told me that
Ciaran Cannon, former Junior Minister for Education had emailed her to say that, because of how impressed he was with my article, he wanted me to sit on the panel of EXCITED. This is a digital learning festival, an innovative conference created by him, to promote the use of technology in education, which was held in Dublin Castle last week. I immediately agreed,” said Hannah. The panel that Hannah sat on was about the gamification of learning, meaning the use of game-like rules or systems used in learning. The conference MC, Colm O’Regan asked Hannah if she had a clean slate, what subjects would she introduce to the Leaving Cert course. Her answer delighted the audience. “I told him that I was happy with the options I had, that it need not be new subjects in

Autism Action Cheque Presented In Lusk Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly paid a visit to The Cottage Kids Playschool in Lusk, last Thursday, The occasion was the presentation of a cheque for a whopping €303,000 to Irish Autism Action on behalf of 100,000 children nationwide, who took part in the Early Childhood National Pyjama Day last March. The children were all dressed as pirates, as they opened the treasure chest and proudly presented the loot, a whopping cheque to the Minister, in the company of Kevin Whelan, CEO of Irish Autism Action. The money raised will be used by Irish Autism Action to develop ‘Access Autism’, an awareness and training programme, specifically tailored for early childhood educators, which is open to parents.
The €303,000 was donated by parents across the country whose children put on their pyjamas for fun in an effort to help children who need their support. Minister Reilly paid tribute to the generous efforts of all the children, staff and parents involved in the annual fundraiser, with the emphasis on children helping children and having fun doing so. He also congratulated Amanda Corcoran and the team from The Cottage Kids Playschool, who were recent winners of the Early Childhood Ireland National Innovation awards. I asked, If we can learn subjects through Irish, why can we not learn them through technology? Technology is the future of independent learning, and it’s that skill that will teach the students of today to adapt to the jobs of the future, and that’s what is important,” she said. Skerries Fails To Retain Blue Flag Skerries has lost their Blue Flag, due to failure to comply with water quality requirements for the Blue Flag. Having not met the excellent standard required, Skerries also did not regain their Green Coast Award for 2015. “The Green Coast Award recognises beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty,” said Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, TD Alan Kelly. According to An Taisce, Skerries South Beach did not meet the excellent standard required for Blue Flag status, after it only gained a “good” status. It seems that Skerries narrowly missed out on retaining its Blue Flag
status, having been ranked ‘good’ when an ‘excellent’ standard was required. “Skerries lost its Green Coast Award due to failure to comply with water quality requirements,” An Taisce confirmed. However, on a positive note, our North County beaches still did very well, and three will be presented with both the Blue Flag and a Green Coast Award achieving dual award status. These are Portmarnock, Portrane and Donabate. This is very positive news as we hit the summer season, hoping that tourists from far and wide will (good weather permitting) flock to our fabulous beaches.
“The Blue Flag is an award of excellence, the beaches and marinas that have achieved this accolade today have complied with strict criteria relating to water quality, safety, facilities for visitors, beach management, environmental education and the provision of information,” Kelly continued. Our local beaches will be
awarded a total of four Green Coast Awards. Alongside the dual award status for Donabate, Portrane and Portmarnock, The Burrow is also being awarded the Green Coast Award for the first time. Beaches that are dual award winners have retained both their Blue Flag and Green Coast awards.
Fun Run For Charity Last week, forty students from Transition Year in Loreto Balbriggan participated in a 5k fun run in aid of Society of St Vincent De Paul (SVP) in Malahide Castle. following agreement reached at the Labour Relations Commission( LRC) in respect of increased staffing and measures to address overcrowding. However, according to the INMO, management have failed to honour these commitments. “The extra nursing staff promised have not been recruited and the department is constantly left short staffed. In addition, overcrowding levels remain dangerously high due to insufficient bed capacity in the hospital. Delayed discharges are at the same level as they were in December/ January despite the release of additional funding to address this problem. On top of this, in recent weeks, management have taken the decision to close 33 beds thus reducing capacity further in the hospital,” said Lorraine Monaghan, INMO Industrial Relations Officer. “It is a disgrace that both patients and staff are exposed to such appalling conditions in this day and age. Management have had four months to implement measures agreed at the LRC to bring about desperately needed change, however, they have failed to do so and they have compounded the problem further by closing 33 beds. Our members, on behalf of the patients they look after, will no longer tolerate this situation or accept empty promises,” she added.

Yvonne Kenna, Dublin Yes, definitely, if they are bold. We did it in our time. We slapped them and it didn’t do any harm.
Marie Dullaghan, Swords I am very much against legislating such matters. Parents are intelligent and should be able to manage their children sensibly. But some parents might take it too far and that needs to be legislated against in some way. You need to hold parents accountable.

the Chamber, really building on the rebirth of the Chamber which was orchestrated by Al Ryan, the president before her,” said the Chamber. “As we welcome Barry to the job, we hope that you will row in behind him to offer support in any way you can. Local councillor, Justin Sinnott (NP) is calling for the County Council to take action to ensure safety at the Church Road Triangle at the Rathbeale Road in Swords. He told the County Leader: “I have been approached by some residents who have concerns about road safety at the triangle at the bottom of Church Road leading on to Rathbeale Road in Swords,” he said. “The main safety issues are particularly in and around school times. There are a number of blind spots with cars parked. I have requested that the traffic engineer review the area particularly at school times when children are either going to school or going home,” he continued. “I have also asked for consideration to be given to additional signage and re-lining of the road,” Sinnott added.

Anthony McGann, Swords No and I say that from experience. It can affect the whole life of a child and its well-being. Children might think that violence is normal but it isn’t. Never slap your child.
Valerie Carroll, Swords Yes, I do think so. If a child is constantly being bold I think a parent has the right. If they cannot do it another way and the child won’t listen. I think it does no harm.
Ben Connor, Dublin No, a gentle slap might be okay but not a slap done with anger and violence.
Paddy Rigney, Dublin Yes. I am a father and a grandfather and if a young lassie or young fellow steps out of line it should be corrected by slapping the cheek or a clip on the ear. It doesn’t do any harm.
Paul Fox, Dublin Yes, I would say so but not to beat children. Just a slap that’s all. That is okay.
Kay Conroy, Swords I don’t think so. I think there are other ways you can do it. You can put them into a corner. But don’t slap them.

Maeve McLoughlin, Swords It depends, I never did. But I suppose it is up to parents themselves.

Bridget Burke, Swords No. It is the wrong thing to do. If you got a slap you know how hard it is but sometimes parents might hit a baby a little bit harder than they mean to. I think you should try to talk them around.

Farrell Calls On Young Entrepreneurs To Enter Competition Local TD Alan Farrell (FG), has called on young entrepreneurs from the North County to enter the search for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE). A total investment fund of €2 million will be available to young people throughout every county in Ireland.
“I urge all young people, aged between 18 and 30, in the North County, with a start-up or a business idea to apply through their Local Enterprise Office before July 31st. Increasing entrepreneurial activity is a core theme of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs,” Farrell said.
“Up to €50,000 will be awarded to three winners in the North County. The winners at national level can then receive up to an additional €50,000. Over 400 young entrepreneurs will also win places at regional Business Bootcamps with mentoring supports, to

02.06.2015 further develop their business skills,” he explained. The aim of the competition is to support a culture of entrepreneurship among young people in Ireland, to promote entrepreneurship as a career choice, and to encourage Ireland’s young people to set up new businesses which will ultimately create jobs. “The first stage is a county-based competition, where the Best Young Entrepreneur in Fingal will be found. This will be followed by eight regional finals, with one young business-person being crowned Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur later in the year at the national finals in Google’s European HQ in Dublin,” Farrell continued. “Two thirds of all new jobs are created by start-ups, so in order to increase job creation, and replace every job that was lost in the crash by 2018, we must support more entrepreneurs in their efforts to start new businesses,” he said.

Crazy Hair Day At Swords School Teachers and pupils from St Colmcille’s Girls National School held a Crazy Hair Day at the school on Thursday last, all in aid of a charity based in Uganda. Over the years, St Colmcille’s GNS has contributed to a number of different charitable organisations, and pupils are encouraged to help others whenever possible. Lámha Suas is an Irish charity based in rural Uganda. It works very closely with Madudu Girls’ Primary School, who are currently fundraising to develop a school library. St Colmcille’s teachers, Ms Daly, Ms Fox and Mc MacMahon have volunteered to help with their fundraising efforts.
They will be participating in a 50 km hike over the Wicklow mountains from 5th to 7th June. To support this worthy cause, the school hosted a Crazy Hair Day on Thursday last. All teachers and pupils were encouraged to be as creative as possible with their hair styles on the day. They exceeded all expectations, with some of the most imaginative hairstyles, all thanks to the creative parents. Each pupil was asked to contribute €2, or whatever possible to contribute to the new library. Teachers also carried out lessons based on the daily life of the girls in Madadu school, prior to the fundraiser. For their great efforts on the day, homework was waived, much to the delight of all.

Credit Union Sponsors Canine Companion Cycle On Saturday 30th May, 50 cyclists from Clontarf cycling club cycled a whopping 275 km from Artane to Blarney in County Cork in aid of My Canine Companion Autism Services. The cycle was sponsored by Member First Credit Union (MFCU), which as a branch in Swords and Health Services Staffs Credit Union (HSSCU). The sponsored cycle was supported by two of Ireland’s largest credit unions; MFCU and HSSCU who have donated €10,000 to the charity which trains dogs to assist children and young adults with autism. The charity cycle, in aid of Autism, will started in Artane at 6.30am and it travelled at an average speed of 25-28 kph, stopping in towns along the route, before reaching Blarney at 6pm. Autism is often referred to as a ‘hidden disability’ because children with autism rarely show any physical symptoms. The presence of a specially trained dog with its reflective coat lets other people know that a little consideration may be required, making it easier for autistic children to integrate into their communities. It takes 2 years to train one dog, at a cost of €10,000, but the impact a specially trained dog has for an autistic child is priceless. The dogs provide safety, independence and companionship to children who would otherwise live in a very isolated world. These dogs help to transform the lives of children and their families.

Credits Unions are a common sight in most of the towns and villages around the country and for good reason. They make the process of banking simple and affordable. The Credit Union is a community based, family oriented organisation, with many options for borrowing money for family life. The definition of a Credit Union is ‘ a nonprofit-making money cooperative whose members can borrow from pooled deposits at low interest rates.’ This means that the Credit Union aren’t out to make a profit, they are a cooperative, so they are controlled by its members and run for its members. As Credit Unions are family orientated organisations, they help people by providing loans for them ; money to improve their general living standards. Loans from the Credit Union normally go on three key areas. They go to the buying of a new car, booking of a family holiday and for home improvements. They will lend you the money when you need to buy a car, because
if you’re a first time driver, the insurance rates will be sky high. Normally the price of the i n s ur a n c e is more than the car itself. So having a loan to buy your car can be a huge help. Also
It’s now the beginning of June, and summer is here, and a holiday is needed for all. The Irish summer can be unpredictable at the best of times and sometimes the bit of sun in Spain, France
when a family needs to get a bigger car because of a growing family, money can be tight especially if this growing family had just had a new addition. A car is a much needed part of everyday life and we would all be lost without one and parents need them especially being their kids’ own personal taxi service, with school runs. It would be a nightmare without one and with the Credit Union it’s easier to get one.
and Italy can be exactly what is needed for all the family. The Credit Union offers loans for that much needed breakaway and with the kids after a stressful year, especially if they are in exam years. The loans aren’t just for k i d s , romantic weekends in Venice or the lads’ weekend in England, to even honeymoons in the furthest reaches of the globe. The important thing is that you can go on these holidays and relax in the knowledge that when you get back, you won’t be stressed because you feel you’ll be paying the loan back until you retire. When you walk in your front door you want to be greeted by nice floors, relaxing paint on the walls and to sit down on a comfortable couch watching the soaps on a TV you’re actually happy with. That’s where the Credit Union can help. They can’t help you decide on what colour to paint your walls or whether or not to go with the 40 inch or 48 inch TV, but it can lend you the money to redecorate your living room, kitchen or to get that conservatory you’ve always wanted. It can also be used to do up your garden for the summer for those
rare days a barbeque can be used comfortably. The opportunity to do all of these things is the important part and that is what the Credit Union gives you, without the worry of ludicrous fees and ridiculous interest rates. The Credit Union is run by the Community for the community and serves it well. Here you are likely to be served by a neighbour, or friend and this friendly ethos is part of the fabric of our Credit Unions. A new Express Loan Service is an example of the credit union reacting to members’ needs. From engaging with members, it was very clear that they want a simple, straight forward loan service, particularly for smaller loans. To meet this requirement, they have recently launched a new Express Loan service for loan applications up to €2,500. The loan process is very straight forward, and they have kept the documentation requirements to a minimum while still meeting regulatory requirement. This new service has been very well received by members and it has also brought a large number of new members to the credit union in the last few weeks.

A new men’s and boys’ clothes shop, which opened last December on Forster Way in Swords, is having a very beneficial effect on that area of Swords. Protocol Menswear is a very well established brand name, with outlets in Dublin city and other areas, and their new store is attracting new footfall to Forster Way. The County Leader spoke to manager of the new Swords shop, Carey Byrne who told us that the shop is now experiencing success in their brand, which caters for both wedding hire and retail for adults, and Communion outfits for boys. He said, “The first few weeks after opening the shop were a little challenging, but now that we are approaching six months in business here, we have been pleasantly surprised with the great support we are now enjoying from the locals. Our wedding business is attracting new customers, and we are really pleased with how things are going,” he said. “People are very excited to see new shops opening up, and we’re getting a lot of business from word of mouth. We decided to locate our Communion wear to Swords, which is a more appropriate suburban location than in the city.” Wedding wear is probably the most popular part of the business, as packages are available where the entire male wedding party of groom, best man, groomsmen and father of the bride can be dressed at competitive prices. They can keep the suits. Otherwise, outfits can be hired for the big day. “All in all, we’re very happy with the level of business here in Swords,” he said. In congratulating Protocol on their six months in business, Fingal Dublin Chamber President, Siobhan Kinsella said, The Chamber would like to congratulate Carey Byrne and Protocol for Men on choosing Swords as the location for their premier offering of men’s formal wear sale and hire business. It is a sign of returning consumer confidence and increased commercial activity that this high calibre menswear business is experiencing such positive retail success since opening in the town. The quality of the offering in men’s wedding wear to communion and confirmation wear is extensive and is a hugely positive addition to the retail offering of Swords. This is a destination location which bodes well for the continuing development of the retail offering of Swords village.

Now that summer is here our homes and gardens need to reflect that fact and a few changes here and there can make a huge difference to your house and give it a more summery feel. The most important rooms in a house to do this are the bedrooms, toilet, kitchen and even the garden because they are the most used parts of the house. The bedrooms are very important because they are the first and last thing you will see
in any given day. They set the mood for the rest of the day and unless something

drastic happens, the mood of your bedroom can be your mood. It’s important to keep your bed room feeling light and airy with light colour soft furnishings and smooth lighting. A cluttered bedroom leads to a cluttered mind which is never a good thing. Light is a huge factor in a bed rooms attraction it makes you feel invigorated but at night, blinds are needed to calm the room down and create a relaxing, calm space.
Electronics are not a good idea in a bed room because you are more likely to use
them and if the room is used for watching TV or even playing game on a games console , the room becomes a room for gaming not sleeping. Then you can’t actually relax in that room and a deep restful sleep becomes virtually impossible. After the bedroom, the second room you will probably encounter will be the bathroom. The bathroom may be, for some, the place where they first wake up properly after having a shower and
getting ready for the day ahead and it needs to be light and to set you up for a pleasant day. Some nice towels and soaps that are colourful will really brighten up the space. The bathroom also needs the correct amount of storage so you don’t have bottles and brushes all over the place. Clutter will be the thing that holds back your summer because you won’t be in the best mood after coming out of a cluttered house.

World’s First Rowing Challenge Attempt For DAA A crew of 17 men and women from across daa will attempt to become the first team ever to row a 17ft Celtic Longboat from Ireland to France. DAA’s Team Endeavoar is expected to row a total of 70 hours in rotations of five rowers at a time to cross the 500 km of open water starting from Dunmore East in Waterford finishing in Landeda Brittany, Northern France. The first two days will see the crew row 300km continually for 40 hours to reach the Scilly Isles, England. Here support boats will refuel and load provisions before the rowers continue on the final 200km journey to France; estimated to take about 30 hours. Team Endeavoar’s rowing Captain Brian
Dempsey, a member of daa’s Airport Police Fire Service said “The team will cross the busiest shipping lanes in the world, encountering very strong tides in the English Channel and the treacherous Atlantic swell prevalent in Northwest France. These are just some of reasons why this event has never been attempted before. “We have all been training long and hard for this challenge and we’re determined to pull it off. Our determination is fuelled by our passion to raise as much as we can for our three daa charity partners,” Dempsey added. The rowers are taking on this challenge in aid of DAA’s three charity partners Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Parkinson’s Association of Ireland and the Diabetes Unit in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin. Team Endeavoar left on Monday 25th May, two days earlier than planned due to poor weather forecasted. Chairperson of daa’s Charity Committee, Siobhán O’Donnell said: “On behalf of all my colleagues in daa I wish Team Endeavoar every success in their quest to conquer this stretch of open water in a boat.

A car is one of the most significant purchases you will make in your life. For this reason, when you decide to buy a car, it is advisable to research the purchase in advance and to budget carefully. Consumer legislation provides a number of safeguards for those buying a car, though it is important to note that this legislation will not apply where the car is purchased from a private individual.
Before you buy, it is highly advisable to inspect the vehicle first. It is also strongly recommended to consider carrying out a history check on the vehicle. Such checks can turn
up information on any outstanding finance and verify the vehicle history, though it may entail a fee. Consumer legislation only covers transactions between a business and a consumer.

Accordingly, if you buy from a private individual, the purchase will not be covered. It is also advisable to do some research on the seller - for example, check for membership of an accredited industry association. Get any details or representations about the car in writing from the seller. If a dispute subsequently arises, verbal representations will be difficult to prove. When buying your first car, a lot of emotions flow through your body and mind, emotions like joy, happiness and excitement, maybe even a little a bit of fear because you now have a car and it’s what you have worked for, for quite a long time probably. When a person gets something new they will cherish it like a new born child and

After a few years of faithful service you have a choice, do you keep your existing car and care for it, make sure it passes its NCT, keep it clean a not drive it too crazily. After all, if you look after your car, your car will look after you. This car has helped you for a while and it deserves some care and attention. It’s a real shame when you see a car and it has been battered and bruised throughout its years of service. The simple fact of the matter is that your car is a necessity, not a luxury which should be cherished. A time will come though when your beloved car must be traded in for a new one and yes, if you have owned your car for a few years, it is a sad day but think about the future with your new car and all of the memories to come, like early morn-
ings where the heating, you feel, is the only thing keeping you alive. The new car brings many new experiences like all of the fancy new gadgets, gismos, bits and bobs that make the seven year old inside you squeal with delight and make the slightly more mature person you are, now interested in how cool all this can be.
There are many different reasons why getting a brand new car is a good idea, the new cars now have all of the latest safety features as standard. They also boast the amazing feeling that we all feel when we get a brand new toy and that’s the new car feeling. On the practical side of things, the newer cars are safer than the
older ones. Car companies go to extreme lengths to ensure that the cars they produce are as safe as they possibly can be. A huge amount of time, effort and money goes into
testing the cars to their limits to see if they can survive stresses and strains of everyday life. The car is first put through crash simulations to see if, in the unfortunate instance the car
ends up in a high speed crash, the car is best suited to be as safe as it possible can be. Airbags and reinforced chassis are a staple in modern cars. Continuing with that, pedestrian friendly
bonnets are actually safer for a pedestrian if they are struck by the car, because the pedestrian is less likely to go under the car. The level of attention to detail even stretches to extremely
unlikely situations. That seven year old child inside of you will already be delighted with the flashing lights and numerous buttons you have to push to Contd. on page 20

Contd from page 19 simply see what they do and if they are a James Bond ejector seat. The car also puts you in two situations where you feel a million dollars. The first is when your friend gets into the car and marvels at how new and fancy it all is and how smooth and quiet the ride is. The utter joy you feel seeing the jealousy your friends feels if you now have a better car than he or she does. You try and not show the contempt on your face as you sit there watching your misty eyed friend. The second is if you’re cruising down the M50 in your 151 or in about a month a 152, and you see the same make and model as your car, you instantly check if that car is older or younger than yours and if it’s older the feeling of satisfaction fills you. You both have this perfect new car but yours is just that little bit more perfect if that’s possible. The thought of a new car may remind you that you can’t afford a new car right now, but most places offer very affordable loans and options where you can get your new car in a very reasonable agreement with the
company, because they want to sell and you need a new car, so an agreement can always be come to. On

a side note, scrappage deals are a great way to get some money towards your brand new car. As well as that, when you have your new car you are safe in the knowledge that the car won’t need any fixing and you’re sure the car has no hidden secrets, like second hand cars can have. We have all heard about the people who buy a second hand car from an unreliable source and find it falling apart as they drive it home and then you’re left with the option of getting that car fixed at probably great cost, or simply getting a new
cars now come with various warranty terms, so if anything does happen out of the blue, you are covered. As humans, we try to look our best and we like to look at our best when we are going somewhere important. The only problem with trying to rock up to your annual company dinner looking like James Bond, is that he shows up in some of the most beautiful cars on the planet. That’s not saying to go off and spend a million euro on an Italian supercar, which we would all love to, but most likely it’s too expensive and unreal-
1960’s American Muscle cars are incredible machines, but for the school run on a cold December Monday morning, they
are hardly an option. Many new cars reference back to the older cars with big grills and curved lines and they look good. A car that is a few years old can look very dated and tired. A five year old car can look like a ten year old car because of a bit of bad styling, which is real shame. Now a three year old car can look brand new because of good styling and a forward thinking attitude. In the end though, whether or not you decide to upgrade or stay with what you have, make sure you’re happy when driving, because you will spend more time in your car than you care to admit and it’s important to have the right car for you.

By Cathal Boland It seems that all in the great Greek drama “Bailout Number Whatever” are not yet prepared to allow it become a full tragedy. The Greek Government claim negotiations are progressing with their lenders and that a solution is just there, but not quite yet. The opposition parties say they will accept and support any deal while the opinion polls say that the voters want to stay in the Euro. This makes it easier for Alexis Tsipras “adjust his position.” A Government spokesperson warns a Greek exit will have wider political implications for the very essence of the EU. He may be right, and this could explain why the IMF say they will allow Greece to bundle its June monthly due debts into a single €1.6bn payment at the end of the month. Ms. Legarde the IMF Chief, says that a Greek default will “probably not be the end of the Euro.” But,

that it would be no walk in the park. Her use of the word probably has to sound real alarm bells for us all. Following the UK election and the return of Dave to Number Ten, he’s off on a European tour, setting out the reforms he wants. Cameron recently appointed Mats Persson, the former Director of Open Europe a UK Think Tank, as an adviser on EU Reform. Over the last couple of years Open Europe under Persson’s directorship has looked at the UK’s relationship with the EU and what changes might be sought in any renegotiation. Last year they staged “War Games” playing out in mock negotiations the issues of contentions. They had panellists drawn from across the spectrum to argue and rebut the case, amongst which was Ireland’s John Bruton. This week, Open Europe gave the advice that rather than looking narrowly what the UK wants, the focus should shift as the reforms needed to make the EU work better. Let’s hope that their former boss takes this on board and that the debate over the next couple of months will be constructive for all.
