Huge Local Housing Development Plan Unveiled

The news that plans are afoot to develop 3,000 new homes on a vast plot of land between Dublin Airport and the M50 motorway, is set to have an impact on house prices locally.

This audacious plan, which also includes a science park, as well as manufacturing space, is the brainchild of developers, the Comer Brothers from Galway. They are expected to spend €1.5 billion on the massive project. Luke Comer, co-founder of the company, described the 210-acre site as “the most strategic piece of real estate in Europe.” “It is close to the M50, the airport, Dublin Port and the city centre. It is an absolutely ideal place to develop both homes and commercial space,” he said. The development is

expected to help to address Dublin’s acute housing shortage. It is estimated that Dublin will need 9,000 new homes built every year

between now and 2018 to meet capacity. Planning permission has not yet been secured, but they

intend to start building immediately after it is granted. Many believe that because the site is adjacent to the airport, it is expected to have a real impact on the price of houses in the North County area, and particularly in Swords. The upside to the development is the number of construction jobs that will be created during the construction phase. The County Leader asked estate agent, David Quirke, Sales Negotiator with Flynn & Associates in Swords, about the effects that the proposed new houses

Pensioners Hung Out To Dry

Paddy McGann

The ongoing pension controversy at Dublin Airport, which is impacting thousands of workers, both present and retired, is set to rumble on. The problem arose initially because of a hole in the pension fund of around €700 million. As a result, the Irish Aviation Superannuation Scheme (IASS) has been severely underfunded, with the sponsoring companies, Aer Lingus, DAA reportedly contributing very little to the funding. Cuts to pensioners of between 10 and 20 per cent, will come into effect

By Patrick Finnegan on 1st January 2015, which are on top of the Government pension levy, which is already being taken from pensioners. The County Leader spoke with Paddy McGann, Vice Chairman of RASA (Retired Aviation Staff Association) and he spoke about the impact this will have on retirees. He said, “Take someone who has retired after say 40 years service in 2007, he will have gotten no raise since. He’s paying 2.53 per cent pension levy, so if he retired on €30,000, he now has €30,000, less 2.53 per cent. “On 1st January, he’ll have a further 10 per cent cut. This is on top of the failure

to pay him the 8 or 9 per cent consumer price index that has accumulated. He’s now told that this is for life, but the only problem he has, is the return they are getting on the money, is not good enough to sustain that, and he’s being told that if that happens, then its your hard luck.” “The situation, as we see it, is that the employer has to put money in on behalf of the pensioners. Pensioners have contributed a total of €175 million over the years, but Aer Lingus has done nothing for pensioners, except to say pensions should be reduced by one eighth.” “One lady, who is a member of our Continued on page 12

on the property market will have on prices in the local area. However, he was uncertain that these new houses would have a direct impact on prices in the area. He said, “There is an urgent need to bring new homes to the market, so I welcome

any new homes to help relieve the housing shortage in the North County Dublin area.” “This development will help somewhat to relieve the serious demand for housing in North Dublin, which has seen house prices increase in value Continued on page 12

Your Award Winning Passenger Storyboard For Dublin Airport Newspaper Fingal Dublin Chamber Business Excellence Award

Balbriggan and District Chamber of Commerce Business Award recipient

We think you’ll find that our newspaper ‘stack’ is CONSIDERABLY bigger than theirs! That’s why more advertisers are choosing us to achieve maximum results for their business

Earlier this year saw Dublin Airport create a monthly Passenger Storyboard, giving airport staff a clear view of passenger satisfaction levels from the preceding month. The Storyboard is filled with easy-to-read figures on how passengers rate their experience at Dublin Airport. It gives a breakdown of passengers by gender, age group, reasons for travelling and where in Ireland or the world they originate. It also provides a full list of satisfaction indicators set by the Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) and gives a simple pass or fail under each of these headings. The Storyboard also includes a snapshot of passengers’ Twitter comments, market research findings and a selection of general “did you know” facts about the airport. For the first time, it brings together information from all the different sources of passenger research and feedback, fully illustrated with images and graphics. The Storyboard is updated monthly and published on the Dublin Airport website in addition to the airport’s Twitter and Facebook social media channels.

Mulville Seeks Cause Of Flooding In Donabate

Skerries RNLI Assists Group Stranded By Rising Tide

Local Councillor, Paul Mulville (NP), is anxious to find the cause of flooding under the railway bridge at Ballisk, Donabate. The bridge often floods when it rains, leaving it completely impassable for commuters and children walking to school, according to Mulville. At a recent Council meeting, Mulville asked the Chief Cllr. Mulville Executive, Paul Reid, whether a cause of this flooding had been identified. In their reply, the Council noted this issue was previously raised at the Balbriggan Swords Area Committee meeting in November 2013 and initial investigations had not identified the cause of the problem. “Further investigations in conjunction with the Water Services Department will be carried out to establish the cause of the problem and to assess what remedial action is required,” the Council confirmed.

Skerries RNLI assisted three periwinkle pickers, who were in danger of being completely cut off by the rising tide on their return from Shenick island off Skerries recently. Skerries RNLI volunteer crew launched their Atlantic 85 Inshore lifeboat “Louis Simson” at 6.30pm, following reports to Dublin Coastguard from members of the public that several

Areas Of Local Population Growth Should Be Prioritised - Farrell Local TD and member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, Alan Farrell, (FG) has called for an increased focus on Justice in rapidly growing areas around the North County, as more resources become available. “Since coming into office, this Government has made great strides in reforming the Department of Justice, however I feel that we should be planning ahead for further measures that would benefit the people of the North County and similarly expanding communities, especially in regard to Garda personnel,” he explained. “With the lowest age demographic in the country, and an average age of 32, the North County will benefit from many of the justice reforms implemented by this Government. For instance, increased investment

from the Department of Justice has allowed for an increase in Garda Vetting Personnel from 93 to 176, an 83 per cent rise. With many local schools, clubs and childcare facilities in the North County, this investment will benefit such facilities and it is positive news for all growth areas,” he said. Farrell continued: “It is essential that we continue to implement the reforms necessary, to provide residents around the North County with the justice system they need and deserve. I intend to continue to engage with the Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald TD and with my party colleagues, to ensure the necessity and benefit of identifying local growth areas, and resourcing them accordingly, is taken into account when Garda resources are being allocated.”

New Text Alert Scheme For Ballyboughal Ballyboughal has become the latest area to launch their own Text Alert Scheme here in the North County. Launched earlier this month, the project was taken on by the Ballyboughal Community Council who started planning it’s set up last year. The scheme was set up to protect local communities from unwanted intruders and burglaries, and it will be monitored by the Ballyboughal Community Council. The launch took place in Ballyboughal National School and was attended by local residents,

By Patrick Finnegan members of the Balbriggan Garda, Ballyboughal Community Council and the Crime Prevention Officer of North Dublin. There was a large turnout for the launch of the Community Text Alert Scheme, where over 120 turned up and almost 300 residents have signed up for the scheme. However, this scheme is one with a difference, as not only will locals receive text alerts about crime in the area, they will also receive alerts about all the events

and goings on around the community. Chairperson of Ballyboughal Community Council, David Walton, told the County Leader a little more about the scheme: “Of course we want to alert our local community against crime, but we also don’t want the text alert scheme to solely be negative, so that’s why residents will also be alerted to positive events and goings on in the community as well,” he explained. “We assembled a fantastic core group of around 12 volunteers to explain and get support from our residents here, and we were delighted with the positive response.” “The local gardai form an essential part of this scheme, and Balbriggan Garda Station has also been fully supportive of this, along with the County Council,” he continued.

Students Are ‘All Biz’ At Coláiste Choilm Another academic year is off to a busy start for the students of Coláiste Choilm in Swords. Fifth year students celebrated excellent results in their Junior Certificate Examination, whilst first year students settled into their new school. First year students travelled to the Draíocht Centre, Blanchardstown to participate in a workshop in the Student Enterprise Awards, as part of Fingal Enterprise Week. The students learned about brainstorming techniques and how to set up their own business. Coláiste Choilm was the largest entrant in the Student Enterprise Awards in Ireland, with over 200 students participating in the scheme during first and second year as part of their Business Studies course. Meanwhile, Fifth year Business Studies students are responsible for running the school branch of Bank of Ireland. There was intense competition among fifth year students for the various positions, with Brian Howley from Bank of Ireland conducting interviews recently. Uplifting Fundraiser At Malahide Rugby Club A very well attended karaoke fundraiser was held at Malahide Rugby Club recently, all in aid of the Ross Nugent Foundation and the St Francis Hospice charities. Event organiser, Susan Manley told the County Leader about her involvement in the charity night. “Both charities do fabulous work. In the case of the Ross Nugent Foundation, people know of it’s existence, but may not be fully aware of the wonderful work they do. I had breast cancer two years ago, and when I was in the Oncology department at Beaumont Hospital, the chair I was sitting on was donated by the Ross Nugent Foundation. A man in the area told me that the conditions in the department a few years previously, were appalling,” she said. Don Nugent, Ross’s father said, “We are very focused on making life a little more comfortable for patients and visitors alike in the Oncology units at Beaumont Hospital. When we were there with Ross, we had to sleep on the floor. Our focus is no longer about

research, but with providing 150 pieces of equipment, starting with a blood pressure monitor. A rest room has been provided for patients, where they can forget they are patients. It is a place where they can switch off.” “We run a number of events, and when Susan contacted us and said she benefited from the equipment provided by the Foundation, she said she wanted to organise a fundraising night, and we are delighted with her efforts,” said Don. Susan said that when she got well, she wanted to give something back. “I asked if I could hold a disco/karaoke evening for the Ross Nugent Foundation, as well as St Francis Hospice. I was thrilled with the great turnout. An extraordinary €3,200 was collected - €1,600 for both charities, which is wonderful. Don Nugent, who has a lovely singing voice sang on the night. I want to thank everyone for their contribution, particularly Darren Costello, who was MC for the night, and he was fantastic,” said Susan.

also sent a number of emails to the developer saying “We are waiting on a document from the council - it seems that they are not able to take ownership of the land you signed over to them until the entire estate is given to them, so it does seem that you are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds - which includes the mowing.” “There also have been calls to the HSE recently about rats being seen running from the estate into the long grass, so your attention to this would be much appreciated.” Quinn maintains that this is typical of the interaction between himself and the residents, with the developer, but nothing definite has come of it. In an effort to shed light on the reason for the delay in servicing the estate, the County Leader tried unsuccessfully to make contact with the developer on two occasions.

It’s Just Gas By Cathal Boland Barroso and his College of Commissioners are now part of history. Juncker and team took over the shop on Saturday last and set about work. Juncker has commenced the process of change in how the Commission does its work and how it communicates with each citizen in every country. No small task, but one worth getting right. The UK, whose payment into the EU is now twice what they paid in 2009, appear to want to rewrite the rules. They argue against making an additional payment of €2bn, of which €1bn would go to fund a rebate to France. There is a real need for Juncker to spend time and effort in assisting the UK to find a comfortable slot in which to operate within the EU. The Russian gas supply issue to Europe is resolved for the moment, as Ukraine and Russia reach an agreement, which sees Russia get back payments and an agreed price for their supply over the winter. Balbriggan Teacher To Volunteer In Rwanda Balbriggan teacher, Ciaran Burke will set off on a new adventure this month, when he heads off to Rwanda with international development organisation, VSO Ireland. Ciaran will spend the next 12 months living and working as a volunteer in the east African, landlocked country of Rwanda. A primary school teacher in Bracken Educate Together in Balbriggan, he will spend the next year volunteering as a Literacy and Numeracy Advisor in Kirambo District. Rwanda is a country that has made great strides since the horrific genocide in 1994, that took the lives of over a million men,

women and children, but challenges still remain. An entire generation of teachers lost their lives in the genocide, leaving most schools without qualified teachers. Ciaran will work with teachers and student Ciaran Burke teachers to improve their styles of, and methods of, teaching leading to higher levels of activity and learning in the classroom. teachers to ensure that children get the best possible education and start in life. “Teachers continue to use ‘Chalk and Talk’ tactics rather than putting the children at the heart of classroom activities. Many teachers have not received the same level of training as would be standard in Ireland and need support to improve their teaching styles,”said Ciaran. ‘I am absolutely thrilled and excited to be volunteering with VSO. This is an opportunity to contribute at a higher level in the fight against poverty by sharing my skills and experiences and I would urge other teachers to consider volunteering with VSO,” he concluded.

Major Investment Planned For Local Heritage Sites Three local heritage sites around the North County are due to get major investments over the next three years. According to a report from the County Council, Malahide Castle, Newbridge Demesne, and Swords Castle and the surrounding ‘Culture Quarter’ are set to receive a total of €5 million worth of investments over the next three years. The sites are considered three of the county’s most iconic heritage sites and will see major renovations through this investment from the County Council. Malahide Castle, which has already

had a €10 million renovation, will receive €500,000 to spend on further renovations next year, and Newbridge Demesne in Donabate will finally receive the funds it needs to improve its visitor facilities with a €1.5 million investment. The final €3 million is scheduled to be spent on Swords Castle and the recently named ‘Swords Cultural Quarter’ – the area surrounding the castle – as part of the County Council’s plans to develop the historic area of Swords. “Approximately €1 million will be spent annually, over the next three years, in a bid to create a new social and cultural destination centred around Swords Castle and linking back to the retail heart of the town,” the Council said.

Local Pocket Guide Launched In Malahide County Mayor, Cllr Mags Murray launched “Exploring Fingal”, a new pocket-sized guide to the North County’s archaeological heritage at the recent heritage tourism seminar held at Malahide Castle. Developed by archaeologist and field monument advisor, Christine Baker, the leaflet explores thirty-six of the county’s main heritage sites, providing a map, directions, photographs and site descriptions along a route around the county, along the coast and through the heart of the rural North County. Most sites featured in the guide are accessible to the public, but for the more adventurous explorer, some sites, though still prominent in the landscape, are a little off the beaten track, over stiles, through fields or by a beach. Speaking at the one day seminar ‘Fingal’s Heritage: Supporting Communities, Supporting Tourism’, which was hosted in partnership with The Heritage Council, Murray said, “this seminar builds on the Council’s long record owning and managing heritage sites like Malahide Castle, by looking at new and exciting initiatives

Rush Project Lights Up Following on from last week’s story in the County Leader detailing Rush’s new campaign to ensure the town has their Christmas lights this year, the County Council have confirmed that they will be funding €2,850 towards the ‘Let’s Light Up Rush Together’ project. In a letter to the Chairperson of the Rush Tidy Towns group, Deirdre McMenamin, Paul Smyth, Senior Executive Officer Balbriggan Swords Operations Division of the County Council confirmed that the local authority is in a position to be able to fund a “once off cost” towards the town’s

By Jennifer McShane Christmas lights campaign. “It is also a further acknowledgement of the close and collaborative working relationship that has built up over the last number of years with the Tidy Towns Group in Rush and the Council,” he said. The Rush Christmas Lights Committee explained that Rush lost many of its wonderful trees when Eirgrid dug up the main street of the town, and as a result, this year the town is without anywhere to hang their lights and no funding. Instead, they plan to place on top of their

poles, cones (or crowns) which will all be lit, down Rush’s main street. However, they need to get 50 of them, which will cost a substantial amount (around €5,000), hence the launch of their campaign. Thanks to the generosity of the Council, they have some of the funds needed, and they are hoping locals will be just as supportive so they will raise the remaining funds needed. Local Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly TD, has also publicly spoken of his support for the Christmas lights campaign, saying he is determined that Rush will have a spectacular display of Christmas lights this year.

Progress Being Made On ‘Broadmeadow Way’ Project Progress is being made on the proposed walkway and cycle way between Donabate and Malahide known as the ‘Broadmeadow Way,’ according to the County Council. This was what the Council told Councillor Brian Dennehy (FF), who called for a feasibility study and costing for extending the Broadmeadow Way northwards to the Rogerstown and Balleally area in order to “service and allow access to both the towns of Rush and Lusk to an invaluable community facility.” In response, the Council said it “continues to make progress on the Broadmeadow Way project” which is a proposed trail for pedestrian and

cyclists which will cross the Malahide Estuary, adjacent to the railway line. The project covers the 6km between Newbridge Demesne and Malahide Demesne which the council sees as a “critical link in the overall Fingal Coastal Way” - a plan to link all the coastal towns of the North County with a cycleway and pathway. “The provision of this trail may enhance our ability to implement other similar planned projects,” said the local authority. However, the Council made it clear the Broadmeadow Way would have to be completed before any extension of the route is considered. “The Council may be in a position to assign resources assessing the feasibility of proposals in the Rogerstown area following completion of the Broadmeadow scheme,” they said.

Job Losses Shock For Swords Shocked staff at a services firm in Swords learned that their jobs were gone, just two weeks after a company director told them there were “exciting developments” to report. All 87 employees at Acuman Services Management, which is based at Swords Business Campus, lost their jobs after the company went into liquidation. Huge Local Housing Development Plan Unveiled Continued from page 1 beyond normal trading. The proposed 3,000 homes have yet to be granted approval, and may take time to come to the market. With sales and rental values rising at alarming rates, these houses are badly needed.” He continued, “In January 2015, proposed mortgage criteria which affects loan to value

and loan to income ratios, may see a greater impact on the market in my opinion. If the proposed ratios are implemented, it could see a cooling off period in the market, as people save the additional funds. This, in turn, will pressure the rental market and could prove counter productive in tenants moving to new homes,” he said.

Pensioners Hung Out To Dry Continued from page 1 association came to me and said, “My pension is €14,000 per year and I am going to lose €350, which is the seven or eight cylinders of gas, which I get in winter to keep me alive. This means I can no longer save up for these,” she said. McGann was furious with the contribution of the Labour Party in all of this. “I have always contributed through my union dues, part of which went to the Labour Party. I’m so furious with them that I would shoot them if I got the chance. President Michael D Higgins even signed the Bill making this law on Christmas Day last year. It has become known as the ‘Massacre of Pensioners Day’. Local senator, Darragh O’Brien concurred with much of which McGann had to say. He told the County Leader, “The total membership of the scheme is 15,000 members, made up of 5,000 people who are working and paying into their pension, 5,000 retired members, who are drawing a pension, and 5,000 deferred pensioners, who paid in for years and no longer work for any of those companies, but have yet to draw down their pensions.

“Over two years ago, I raised this with Minister Joan Burton. What they are proposing to do on the airport pension scheme, has never been done before. No Government has ever legislated to reduce people’s entitlements and pension benefits. It means that the 5,000, who are retired and drawing a pension, will be cut by up to 20-30 per cent on their pensions. This is not a state pension scheme. “These people paid into a compulsory pension and were promised this pension when they left. If this is allowed to happen here, I guarantee that it will happen in other commercial semi-state companies and other companies all across the country,” he said. “Everyone is aware that this scheme is in trouble. There’s a big hole in it of €700 million. Aer Lingus has hundreds of millions of cash reserves, as well as DAA. Both companies are proposing to put in minimal amounts of money. We’re looking for an element of fairness in all of this. I’m tabling some significant amendments to the Social Welfare Bill in the Seanad and I hope to build up support from across the parties on this.” He continued, “The deferred members have been particu-

larly badly treated. They haven’t even engaged with the deferred members, who don’t have a seat at the table, because they are no longer employees and no longer union members.” O’Brien claims that the unions have let their members down. “SIPTU have been disgraceful in this, and they have been complicit with the Government on getting these changes. They are now starting to refuse union dues from deferred members, and are sending them back.” “David Begg is due to retire in March on a very big pension, and he’s supposed to be representing these people, who have paid his salary through their union dues, and they have been left high and dry. SIPTU has not represented its members in any effective way at all. I wonder what David Begg, or Joan Burton, or Paschal Donohoe would think if someone did that to their pensions.” “There’s a real life story here, and it concerns people who have worked all their lives and paid into this scheme, being totally hung out to dry by the government, which is being aided and abetted in this, by the largest union in the country,” concluded O’Brien.

Call For Local Schools To Participate In ‘Fishy’ Competition

St Finian’s GAA Club’s Under 7’s recently hosted Sylvester’s from Malahide in River Valley for six hurling matches in great conditions. The boys really showcased the skills they have been working on over the past couple of months, winning a number of the matches. They have played matches against Sylvester’s, Binn Eadair, Trinity Gaels and O’Dwyers over the past few weeks in both football and hurling. Training takes place in the hall on Thursdays at 6pm. All boys born in 2007 welcome. The lotto jackpot was €8,100 and the numbers drawn were 1, 3, 8, 15. There was no winner. The €50 winners were Eimear Wright and Jennifer and Niall Bone. This week’s jackpot will be €8,200.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is calling on schools around the North County to participate in the 2014/2015 ‘Something Fishy’ educational programme, and primary schools from all over the locality are encouraged to take part. Flybe Starts New Flights From Dublin Airport Airline Flybe has recently launched its new routes from Dublin, Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Exeter and Inverness to London City Airport in a major expansion, providing direct links for customers throughout the UK and Ireland to the heart of London’s financial district. Six purple Flybe planes were christened in the “Spirit of the Regions” theme and a naming ceremony took place at Dublin Airport led by Philip De Klerk, Chief Financial Officer of Flybe. Together they unveiled “Spirit of Dublin” aircraft, ahead of the inaugural flight’s take off.

Commenting on the launch, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe said: “I’m delighted to welcome Flybe’s first flight from Dublin Airport to London City Airport in the heart of the UK capital today. Connectivity is key in developing our economy and facilitating the strong trade links that exist between Ireland and the UK and this new route will no doubt be welcomed by many Irish and UK businesses. “ “Today’s announcement will provide further choice and connectivity for local passengers around the North County, which is welcome. I wish Flybe well in launching and developing this new route in the future,” he said. Flybe expects that 100,000 passengers annually will fly on the new route. The airline will offer up to four flights a day between Dublin and London.

through piles of clutter. It’s important to be ready for Christmas too, especially if you have children. Inevitably, toys and games will be gained over the holidays, so clearing out or donating unwanted or unused toys in the build up to Christmas, will give you extra room once it hits.

If you’re thinking of moving, but don’t want the hassle of moving your children from school and leaving your friends behind, you could save money and revamp your home with just a couple of improvements. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut this time of year, but working on home improvements is a great way to stay active, whilst improving your living space, and ultimately adds value to your home.

nity to add some life to a time-worn room. Choose a rich texture or bold pattern if you’re feeling brave, or a smaller pattern generally works in every room, but both will instantly lift the mood. When choosing a curtain, long curtains that reach the floor always look better than the shorter versions. If there is a radiator and you wish to fit longer curtains, install a roller blind in the window as well - this can be pulled down for privacy, and when the room is heated the curtains can be drawn, leaving the room nice and warm. Curtains are also a great opportunity to save money on your heating costs - try a curtain with a thermal lining, or get your existing curtains relined and you’ll notice a huge difference. The lining is almost invisible, so your curtains won’t actually look any different, but you’ll notice the difference in the cost of your bills!

Bathrooms are probably one of the easiest rooms to make a big improvement on, without great cost. Newly painted walls will dramatically lift the mood of the room, but re-grouting and replacing taps and plugs also makes a big difference and are generally pretty easy to do. Larger projects, such as replacing floors, tile and showers will need professional help and will be more costly, but there are plenty of specialist in the North County, who provide reasonably priced services to help you make the most of your bathroom this winter.

Neutral coloured walls can be brightened with a simple coat of paint. Repainting in the winter is a great time to liven things up, and a new coat of paint can drastically improve the mood of an entire room.

‘Mad Mary’ Production Films In Swords The film crew behind new Irish film ‘A Date for Mad Mary,’ set for release next year, were spotted filming in Swords last week. One of the films producers,

though reluctant to give many details away, told the County Leader that the crew had been filming around Swords for the past week, and had also

filmed in a house in Ridgewood. Filming will take place for just over five weeks, and though a few days were spent filming in Swords, most of

the filming took place in Drogheda. ‘A Date for Mad Mary’ sees ‘Mad’ Mary McArdle return to Drogheda after a short spell in prison - for something she’d rather forget. Back home, everything and everyone has

changed. Her best friend, Charlene, is about to get married and Mary is the Maid of Honour. When Charlene refuses Mary a ‘plus one’ for the wedding, on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary is determined to prove her wrong. She throws herself into the local dating scene, in the hope of finding a nice guy who’ll look good in a tux. But finding a date in a town where everyone knows your name, and your reputation, is not going to be easy. The film stars an ensemble of young Irish actors including Seana Kerslake, Charleigh Bailey and Tara Lee as well as established talent including Denise McCormack and Norma Sheehan. Director Darren Thornton said: “Everyone involved is just feeling thrilled that it’s finally happening. It’s a largely female cast on ‘Mad Mary’, so that aspect of it is really exciting, because you don’t get a lot of Irish films where the cast is predominantly female, so it feels good to be doing something new.” The film will be released in 2015.

YOURVIEW With reporters Jemma Came and Athina Anastasiou

This week we asked “Has Love/Hate become too violent? Jemma Came

Athina Anastasiou

Maureen Roche, Donabate Yes, I think it’s very crude. Normally I like Dublin films, but I can’t watch Love Hate. My daughter loves it, I know people love it, but I hate it and I wouldn’t let children watch it.

Amy Mongey, Swords No I don’t think it is too violent for TV, but I don’t think younger kids should be allowed to watch it. I think it’s ok if the parents think its ok, but it depends on what they watch and their own views

Imelda Keenan, Clontarf Yes, I just hate violence full stop. Maybe it’s just to do with my age, but I just don’t like the idea of violence being brought into my sitting room. I know it’s there, but it’s very uncomfortable to watch, and I would not let children watch it.

Gwen Geoghegan, Swords Yes, because look at what happened in the jail – one of the lads jumped over the jail when they were talking to a man, they did it because they saw it in Love Hate and they thought it was OK. I wouldn’t let children watch it.

Sophie Hand, Lusk No, because it happens in everyday life – I think its realistic, but I wouldn’t let children watch it until they were about 16.

Caoimhe McLoughlin, Swords No, I just think there are lots more violent programmes on TV than Love Hate and I think everybody is used to that and seeing that on their screens. Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, The Vikings, and Sons of Anarchy are all of a similar ilk.

Barbara Walshe Keane, Malahide It isn’t as violent as the Sopranos, which is kind of ‘old hat’ at this point, so not really. Probably for Irish television productions, maybe it’s more violent, but I don’t find it offensively violent. I wouldn’t let children watch it.

William Brady, Swords Yes, Irish people are always preaching about society and this, that, and the other, but I think it’s just encouraging kids to go out and live that life – it looks glamorous, doesn’t it? The women, the drugs, the money, the shootings. Children shouldn’t watch it.

Sandra King, Swords I don’t watch it, from what I’ve heard it is too violent, and that’s why I don’t watch it – there’s no way I’d let children watch it.

Paddy Mulvany, Swords It’s absolutely dire. I think that’s what is causing the problems on the streets. There’s too much violence on TV in general – this is what’s putting them on to taking out guns and shooting people and everything.

Patrick Griffin, Swords I think it’s too violent; I wouldn’t even look at it. I don’t watch it; I wouldn’t watch it on principle – too violent and giving all of the wrong signals. It’s inciting violence I think and giving people ideas.

Gary Ivie, Swords No, because it’s shown after the 9 o’clock watershed. I think it’s realistic, based on what you see in the newspapers and stuff, and I think if children are allowed to play video games such as Grand Theft Auto, they should be allowed to watch it.

The survey however found that in general, Irish drivers are quietly confident in their driving abilities, with 86 per cent of those surveyed stating to be ‘very good’ or ‘good’ at parking. When asked about their preferred parking location, almost half of those surveyed said they would prefer to take an on-street parking space with multi-storey car parks following closely behind at 41 per cent, with 90 per cent of those stating convenience and fear of running out of change for meters as the reasons for their pref-

A low 15 per cent preferred on-street ground level car parks while only four per cent choose underground car parks. “As our survey reveals, something as simple as parking, an activity that we all do every day, can be problematic for a high number of drivers,” says Ciara O’Brien, Head of Operations, easytrip. “Our mission is to make life easier for motorists and we would advise, where possible to use a car park premises where you and your vehicle are guaranteed to be safe and secure. Positive Progress For Balbriggan Community Council Balbriggan Community Council recently organised a meeting, to introduce the newly elected councillors for the Balbriggan Ward to the council members, and to highlight issues that they felt needed to be worked on for the betterment of the town. The Balbriggan Town Council is a steering committee, set up by citizens in the town and surrounding district, after a series of public meetings. The aim of the steering

committee is to provide a forum for the representation of the views and concerns of the people of Balbriggan and District. All eight councillors representing the Balbriggan Ward were invited, with three of them, JP Browne (FG), Barry Martin (PBP) and Brian Dennehy (FF) in attendance on the night. New Samaritans App Can Aid Local Residents Last week, Samaritans, the leading suicide prevention charity, launched a ground breaking new Twitter app to help identify, from across the North County, vulnerable people online. Samaritans have recognised that over 500 million tweets are posted per day globally, and an increasing number of these have become an outlet for feelings. The app has been named Samaritans Radar and designed to identify users around the North County who may be struggling to cope from their tweets. The free programme works as an online safety net to reduce the chances of a call for help being missed by e-mailing the subscriber an alert when key words or phrases

are used within a tweet. The thought behind the app came from a 2013 study that indicated a correlation between rates of tweets per users determined to be at risk for suicide, and actual suicide rates. Samaritans, therefore deemed Twitter an important surveillance tool for detecting suicidal patterns. Joe Ferns, Executive Director of Policy, Research & Development at Samaritans, said: “We know that people struggling to cope, often go online looking for support, however, there is still so much we need to learn about why this happens and how we can make the online environment safer for vulnerable people. We need to use tools such as Samaritans Radar to encourage people to look out for one another online, helping them to reach out and offer support.” Samaritans Radar is easy and free to download from www.samaritansradar.org.
