Mayor Opens Castle Mill Road In Balbriggan County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler, officially opened the Castle Mill Road in Balbriggan on Friday last, 30th September. The road, which cost €1.4m to build, was funded from the Council’s development levies and the project was delivered on time and on budget. Although it is only 530m long, the opening of the Castle Mill Road represents an important milestone in the ongoing development of Balbriggan by Fingal County Council. It will be a key link between large areas of residential developments, with a local commercial centre, and the road network surrounding Balbriggan. The road consists of a single lane in each direction, together with a footpath and cycleways on each side. A pedestrian crossing has also been installed adjacent to St George’s School and similar signals were constructed at the Moylaragh junction. Among the benefits the Castle Mill Road will bring to Balbriggan is the removal of Heavy Goods Vehicles from the main residential and recreational areas of north-west Balbriggan, as well as enhanced access from north-west Balbriggan to the Naul Road. It will also provide improved and safer access to and from the schools in the area, through the provision of new cycle and footpath facilities. There will also be enhanced access to the main shopping areas on the Naul Road and to Balbriggan town centre, as well as an alternative access route to the main residential areas of northwest Balbriggan for public service vehicles. “We view this as a significant asset for the area, which we hope will be the springboard for further enhancements,” said Fingal County Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid. It’s a small but significant piece in ensuring that the people of Balbriggan have a better quality of life, enhanced accessibility and safer communities,” he said. County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler said: “Hopefully as the economy recovers, and we have the means to invest in the County and further develop its essential infrastructures, we will have many such occasions in the coming years. This is a good day for local residents, who have experienced high levels of traffic in this area and the associated inconvenience, but also for the businesses, schools and other facilities in the local community,” he said.

Senator James Reilly has called on his successor as Minister for Children, Dr Katherine Zappone to act quickly with regard to Oberstown and to visit the area to meet with worried local residents. Reilly raised the Oberstown issue in the Seanad on 29th September last. Speaking to the County Leader, Reilly said,” What we want is a safe place for young offenders to undergo rehabilitation and re-education. We also need a safe place for staff to work without being intimidated or at risk. Taxpayers’ property needs to be protected and most importantly, local residents need to feel safe in their homes. Currently we don’t have any of this and

the Minister needs to come and meet with the local people, who have Senator James Reilly in Balbriggan been very supportive of this staff members and Minister to meet with the institution over fear among older representative group of the past 40 people in the residents,” he said. years.” Minister Zappone community, she When asked if he thought “With the escareally needs to Minister Zappone was doing lating number of serious come and meet the resi- enough, he replied, “She incidents amounting to dents to reassure them. The needs to reassure residents millions of euros of damage, Board of Management do that matters are going to be as well as personal injury to their best, but this needs a taken in hand that will not result on such a burden being placed on Gardai and result in escapes causing concern to older people and children in the area being stopped,” he said. “I want to raise a serious issue which has been escalating over the past several months at Oberstown facility for young offenders. This is an excellent new-build, costing more than €50 million, which is very much focused on the rehabilitation and re-education of young offenders to give them a second chance, which all Members will agree they are fully entitled to and we would like them to have.” There has been, however, an A new Sinn Fein Constituency Office, the first in the constituency of Dublin Fingal was ever-increasing number of opened in Swords on Friday last by Sinn Fein President, Gerry Adams. Local Sinn Fein TD serious incidents at the Louise O'Reilly was delighted with the new facility, when she said, “Opening our local facility with staff injuries. Constituency Office here in Swords is a massive day for Sinn Fein and a massive day for me, Local residents have our councillors and our MEP. It’s great to have a place in the centre of the constituency, become extremely where people can go. It’s a resource for our members, but more importantly, it’s a a concerned about these inciresource for our constituents.” Pictured at the opening are, Cllr Malachy Quinn, Cllr Philip dents. on their own, as well as many parents of young children. They are becoming increasingly concerned, due to several abscontions and a fire on the roof causing considerable damage to the wonderful facility. There was an incident where a staff member was locked in a room and held to ransom. The Garda eventually had to go to the facility to release the staff member. The newspapers report that last week, over €1 million worth of damage was caused to the facility. Over the past several months, clearly whatever protocols are in place at this facility are not working. Staff feel threatened. I know many of them myself as I worked there as a general practitioner. Many of the staff have worked there for years but do not want to go back. Having been the Minister involved with the facility’s development, I know it was difficult to get staff to work there. Accordingly, it makes it all the more important that they should be retained and feel protected at work. “I have contacted the Minister responsible on this issue, seeking a meeting with local resi-

dents to reassure them. All I have received so far is an acknowledgement. People in the area support the facility and have shown good will to it. They are deeply worried about the escalating incidents over the past two months. Given this and the money invested in the facility, will the Leader invite the Minister to attend the House to explain what has gone wrong at the facility and why there have been a significant number of incidents there? I believe the protocols in place do not allow staff to deal with young offenders. These are young men, 16 and 17, some of whom are aggressive and are as large as many of us, if not larger. The staff need to be able to deal with these problems when they pass a certain point without having to resort to the Gardaí, which has a significant amount of other work to do and can well do without being continually called to the facility. If the protocols were somewhat different, as they have been in the past, these situations would not get to the point they have,” he concluded.

Illegal Parking In Swords Must Be Addressed Jim Sullivan, a resident of River Valley, Swords has complained bitterly about illegal car parking on a footpath in Swords, which he feels is certain to cause a major incident soon. He explained to the County Leader about his concerns.

“I got off a bus outside the Pavilions Shopping Centre last Sunday week and proceeded to walk towards the town centre. When I reached the area across the road from Wright’s Bar, adjacent to the Garda Station, I was

confronted by cars that were parked on the footpath, with one of them parked crossways, completely blocking the entire path to pedestrians. I and all the other pedestrians, some with prams had to go out on to the

Brave Matt Undeterred By Illness Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) Week took place from September 17th until September 25th last. The week aimed to create an international awareness of the disease and an international network to support patients living with the disease. There are over 1000 people living with IPF in Ireland. Patients with IPF develop extreme breathlessness, fatigue, cough and ultimately respiratory failure. There is no known cause for IPF and life expectancy from time of diagnosis can be from 2 to 5 years. Swords resident and former Community Volunteer of the Year, Matt Cullen is a sufferer of IPF, but it has not slowed him down. He told the County Leader, “I was diagnosed with IPF in 2010 and in 2013 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD). Up to 2009 I was very active, healthy and I never smoked. Whilst I am still active, in such activities as Swords Tidy Towns, gardening and art, it is frustrating not to be able to do all the activities before diagnosis of IPF. Although it is a horrible illness, where

breathlessness and fatigue feature daily coupled with frequent chest infections , I am very fortunate to be relatively active and have wonderful support from so many people, such as; family, friends, especially ILFA (Irish Lung Fibrosis Association) and STT (Swords Tidy Towns). Given that I have IPF over 5 years, (life expectancy can be 2 to 5 years) I have lived passed my “expiry” date! So I have a lot to be thankful for and cherish life and try to live life to the full! “Given that there is no cure for IPF at present, I feel it is very important to get an early diagnosis, as early treatment is very important and to highlight the disease. It is a disease more deadly than certain types of cancer, so I am very keen to do anything I can to help other IPF patients and any future patients facing such a serious disease,” concluded Matt.

very busy road to get past this car,” he said. Mr Sullivan has a daughter with a visual impairment and he said if she encountered this situation, she would be very confused and would not know how to overcome it, leading to a really hazardous situation. “This is why I’m really bothered about this. When I went to the nearby Garda station to report this incident, I was told that he was the only one manning the station and he could not attend to it at this time,” he said. Mr Sullivan then contacted local councillor, Joe Newman to see if he could shed some light on the problem. Newman told the County Leader, “I have come by this location on many occasions and I have noted the cars

He continued, “I have put in a motion to the Council asking that when there is any development taking place that there should be dedicated walkways in the middle of a footpath for disabled and visually impaired people. I will do my utmost to make sure that visually impaired people can negotiate footpaths without fear of accidents and to ask the Council to contact the Gardai to ensure that this area here and other areas are policed after hours. People should be aware of our disabled people and I’m calling on motorists and business people in this area to make every effort to make sure their cars are not parked illegally here,” he concluded.

Dublin Airport Welcomes Delta Expansion Dublin Airport has welcomed the announcement by Delta Air Lines that it is to expand its route network from Dublin, by launching a new service to Boston next year. This new service, which will operate daily from May until October, will complement Delta’s existing routes from Dublin to New York-JFK and Atlanta. Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said he was delighted to welcome the new Delta service. “We’re thrilled that Delta is launching a third transatlantic service from Dublin Airport. This new daily service to Boston will offer additional choice and convenience for passengers on both sides of the Atlantic and the added connectivity it will bring will further boost the already strong tourism and trade links between the US and Ireland,” he said. “We are

excited to be launching additional flights from Dublin and we will be offering almost 13,000 weekly seats between Ireland and the United States for the summer 2017 season,” said Dwight James, Delta’s senior vice president transatlantic. “Dublin is the fastest growing EU city in terms of US visitor numbers since 2011, with an increase of 9 per cent year-on-year, and Delta’s new flight will help support this continued growth, benefiting the local economy.” Passengers travelling on Delta’s new service to Boston will use US pre-clearance facilities at Dublin meaning passengers save time on arrival in the US by completing all the necessary immigration and customs checks prior to departure. The only queue a precleared passenger encounters on arrival in the US is the taxi queue to their final destination.

Reilly Delighted With Increasing Garda Successes Local senator, Dr James Reilly has expressed his delight at new Garda figures that show a marked decrease in crime in the Swords and Malahide areas. He told the County Leader that, following a Joint Policing Commission that was held at County Hall, Swords recently there is great news regarding the work the Gardai are doing and the excellent results they have achieved. “People were very concerned about the number of burglaries that took place, but a number of government initiatives, including changing the laws on bail and other initiatives seem to have borne fruit. Crimes like assault causing harm is down by 20 per cent on last year in Malahide and by 14 per cent in Swords. Aggravated burglaries and other serious crime like theft are also down in both areas, which is great news,” he said. Reilly also called for a return to more traditional policing methods in an effort to aid local gardai. “As the Gardai themselves have stated, when they have the resources and the backing of the public, they can do an even better job than they normally do. This is clear evidence that they are succeeding, but nonetheless, we need continued vigilance. One of the areas I believe that could be very useful in reducing crime, like anti-social behaviour, which can sometimes lead to more serious crime and assault, would be the presence of pedal cycle gardai. “We’ve had them in the past and they have been effective. They get to know the local youth and the local residents and vice versa. This leads to a mutual respect and it is proving to be very successful in Blanchardstown, with bikes on the go all the time. This should be replicated in rural areas, like Rush where the Garda station is closed and where there is reduced garda presence, also in Skerries and Lusk,” he said. Senator Reilly also believes that gardai with high visibility in coastal areas of the North County are essential due to the increasing number of tourists visiting these areas. “Larger urban areas like Swords, Malahide and Balbriggan would benefit greatly and I think it would benefit community relations and a greater understanding. I’m always mindful of gardai on the beat, who had the respect of all. There are a lot of Garda initiatives, like football leagues and liasing with the community, which I believe leads to prevention, which is far better than cure. I also welcome the accelerated recruitment of Gardai and we are very clear that North County Dublin must get its fair share of these extra gardai, as it’s the fastest growing region in the country,” he concluded.

The programme, a collaboration between Fingal Libraries and six primary schools within the Fingal area, is kindly supported by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), and runs from September to December 2016. The aim of the programme is to get children reading, and to foster a reading for life culture by using a multi-disciplinary interactive approach, with art, an author visit, creative writing and an active competition element between the different schools and their local library. Children are encouraged to read and gain confidence by discussing a common book, which provides a shared experience of reading. This year the schools involved are the Old Borough NS Swords, Mary Queen of Ireland NS Rivermeade, St Margaret’s NS, St Marnocks Portmarnock, St Partrick’s NS Skerries and Kinsealy NS.

Juncker’s Problems Never End Following the controversy caused by Barroso, the former President of the Commission taking a position with Goldman Sachs, there are more problems facing the Commission. These are relating to ethical standards within the structures of that body. It now emerges that former Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, was in breach of her undertaking to Parliament to cut her ties with an energy company based in the Bahamas. It seems that she did not take an active role in the business and the failure to disengage may be down to bad administration. Her big achievement during her time at the Commission was successfully the elimination of mobile roaming within the EU. This news coming so soon and on the back of the Barroso issue will not be welcomed by Junker who it’s said is less than pleased. TTIP is getting a hard time with the French Trade Minister demanding a halt to the negotiations. He argues for new open and transparent talks under a new mandate.

4th October 2016 He says “The defence of European and French interests means telling the truth, case by case. If an agreement is good for our economy, we need to enforce it and implement it.” The French seem to consider that a halt in the process till after the US Presidential election would be helpful in reaching an agreement. The Austrian Economy Minister has said he thinks it’s time to By Cathal Boland start again. While in Germany the SPD saw a good majority of their party vote in favour of CETA, but only after weeks of divisive criticism against it. This leaves the UK firmly at the back of the queue as far as the US is concerned. They see the US focus, as Obama told Ms May, all centred on the EU. Ms May seems set to play the long game with the EU and is in no hurry to serve notice to quit the union for some time yet. With the potential for a serious shift in the balance of power across a number of important countries she seems set to see how the cards fall before starting to deal.

North County Tidy Towns Volunteers Do Us Proud in the attractive, well cared-for towns and villages we see all over the North County. It is clear that working together, getting to know your neighbours, and getting things done increases people’s pride in where they live and helps to build vibrant communities. All of our towns and villages surpassed the totals they reached last year, which exemplifies the great effort put in by

The Tidy Towns results ceremony was held at the Helix Theatre on Monday 26th September last and hopes were high amongst all contestants that the great summer we’ve enjoyed, would result in success for their towns and villages. The wonderful news was that Skerries reached the zenith and was declared Ireland’s Tidiest Towns. This was the first success for a North County town in the competition since Malahide won the overall award in 1990.

Skerries

As is usual, the standard reached by all of our entrants was incredibly high, as were expectations. It resulted in all of our towns and villages returning increased points on last year, quite an achievement by any standard. Once again, the North County volunteers and committee members have done the county proud. A special word of thanks and praise is well deserved for these wonderful, selfless people and in this feature, we salute these community heroes. In the process, they have brought honour to the North County. Each year they raise the bar to new heights and you get the feeling that they can’t go

all. While all of our towns excelled, special tribute must be paid, not only to the performances of Skerries, but also to Lusk, Malahide and Swords, who were first time attendees at this stage of the awards extravaganza. While Skerries was the overall winner with 327 points, up a whopping six points on last year, Malahide and Lusk performed particularly well. Continued on page 10

These people volunteer their time, effort and expertise, year on year, to help make their communities better places to live and work in. The results of their efforts are obvious

Skerries Tidy Towns also won the Tidiest Large Town Award. Anne Doyle and Maeve McGann are pictured accepting the award from Minister Michael Ring and Managing Director of SuperValu, Martin Kelleher

success has been hailed by all, particularly here in the North County. The first, and up until last Monday, the only winners from anywhere in Dublin was Malahide in 1990. This victory was a tremendous boost for the north County and it provided the inspiration for towns like Skerries to replicate this wonderful achievement. Nowhere was the effect of Malahide’s great victory 26 years ago felt more than in Malahide itself. Overnight the town became a mecca for

tourists, as people from all over Ireland and visitors from abroad came to visit Ireland’s tidiest town. House prices also rose significantly, and Malahide became the place to purchase your home. Restaurants sprang up and it became the fashionable place to eat and to entertain friends. The likelihood is that the win for Skerries will have a similar beneficial effect on the town. Already it is well-known as a wonderful destination, blessed with natural gifts like lovely sandy beach and wonderful

views. The hospitality and quality of food and drink in its many fine hostelries is testament to its standing as one of Ireland’s most sought after social destinations. We asked local auctioneer, Shay Kelly if winning the Tidy Towns means that the value of property in Skerries will rise?. He replied, “Simple economics underlies all markets, even one as seemingly complicated and intractable as the housing market. The interplay of supply and demand determines price. So when demand

rises, either supply will increase or the price of the good will be forced upwards as buyers compete against each other for a relatively scarcer supply. And it’s easy to see this in play in the housing market, be it Skerries or anywhere else.” “Most people who live in Skerries will say that they didn’t need to win the Tidy Towns competition to know that they lived in the best town in Ireland. They already knew that. Much of the beauty of the town is God given: the natural landscape, the sea, the climate. Much of it is man made: the harbour, the Mills, the streets, the shops, the parks, the playing fields. But so much of its richness and beauty is also about the people – the clubs and organisations, the social networks, the caring and sharing.” Tourism is another area that is likely to see a surge in business, as visitors will be keen to visit Ireland’s Tidiest Town. We asked the Restaurant Manager at Blue Bar on the harbour, Jennifer Moore, if winning the competition is likely to have a beneficial effect. She said, “Absolutely!, Footfall has already

increased after the success of the Tidy Towns competition. It definitely helps that they won, or even featured strongly. In the last few years, we have seen an increase in visitors in the town, as a result of doing well in the competition and the hard work of volunteers, but now winning it - the sky’s the limit,” she said. Of course winning the national overall title is not just about window boxes and litter-free streets. it’s about the community and how people there look after their friends and neighbours, as well as the environment. It simply makes sense that people would want to relocate to such a place. “Caring about people and about the space we have been blessed to share is so important. Anne, Maeve and the Tidy Towns committee and volunteers are the ultimate expression of this and we are extremely proud of and grateful to them for their tireless work in bringing out the best in us.” concluded Shay Kelly. Skerries Tidy Towns group also received the Tidiest Large Town Award, as well as the National Value Water Award at the Tidy Towns Awards ceremony. The Value Water Awards are about recognising communities that are reducing their water consumption, raising awareness about water issues and protecting their marine / aquatic environments. Skerries Tidy Towns are involved in rain water harvesting projects, GreenHome Water surveys in schools, promotion of water conservation in the community and water safety activities. This is the first year a National Value Water Award has been awarded. The wonderful achievement of Skerries is sure to have an inspirational effect on all the towns and villages in the North County, who will fancy their chances of replicating this wonderful victory, just like it was when Malahide make the breakthrough 26 years ago.

North County Tidy Towns Volunteers Do Us Proud involve all of its members and makes the most of their abilities and interests is integral to the ethos of Tidy Towns. Tidy Towns is one of the most recognisable environmental initiatives in the country, but Tidy Towns is much bigger than that, it encompasses a way of life here in the North County, where we live our lives showing respect for our neighbours and for nature. It is clear that working together and getting things done increases peoples’ pride in where they live and helps to build vibrant communities. Other local towns and villages that excelled in the competition include, Ballyboughal, which scored 273 points, up seven, which is a remarkable effort by the hard working committee and volunteers in this lovely village. Balbriggan also put in a great effort and like its neighbours, it also increased its total to 273, up a very impressive

six points from last year. Well done to all here. Swords competed in the Large Urban category and improved its total by four points to 286 points, a great showing. The most points gained in the North County was achieved by Balrothery Tidy Towns group who increased their total by a whopping 15 points to 238 points. Portmarnock Tidy Towns group also were big movers increasing their total by a hugely impressive 12 points from last year to end up with 219 points. A special word of congratulations is due for such a great effort to all of our great towns and villages. The adjudicators’ reports were very informative and they highlighted the many things that committees did exceptionally well, whilst also offering constructive criticism about where things can be improved for next year.

‘’I want to congratulate all involved in Skerries Tidy Towns on their big win. A huge amount of effort has gone in and the award is thoroughly deserved. The team in Skerries have been working incredibly hard over many years for this and It’s great that their work has paid off. Of course, it’s not just about awards, it’s about having pride in where you’re from and doing your bit to make it a better place to live.’’ ‘’It’s a fantastic achievement for any town to win the award and I’m delighted that a town in the North County has won. Over the past few years we’ve had great success here in Fingal at the Tidy Town Awards, with Swords in particular doing very well as they were also invited to the awards ceremony and were in the running for the Large Town category.’’ ‘’We’ve also had success at other awards this year, Skerries, Malahide and Howth were shortlisted for the 2016 Foodie Destination of the Year Award. It shows that the North County is becoming known as a tourist destination and the win for Skerries in the Tidy Towns will really help market Fingal as a great place to visit.’’

“This is absolutely fantastic news for the town which has been buzzing for the past week. It’s a reflection of the tremendous work done by the Tidy Towns committee and the people from Skerries Community Association. Everyone in the town has been right behind them and this is a massive achievement. Skerries is a beautiful place to live all of the time, but it’s really nice to get the national recognition.”

County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler “Skerries has a long and proud tradition in the competition, first entering in 1959, one year after the beginning of the Tidy Towns. Last year Skerries won Dublin’s tidiest town and were overall runners up, so this award has been a long time coming but I’m delighted for all involved and for the people of Skerries.”

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid “Fingal County Council is delighted that Skerries has won the overall National Tidy Towns award. This is a great tribute to the people of Skerries for their diligence and hard work over the years. The competition standards are very high and to achieve the top award is a fantastic achievement for all. North County Tidy Towns Volunteers Do Us Proud Director of the Operations Department, Fingal County Council, Ethna Felten “We congratulate the town of Skerries and its Tidy Town Committee and volunteers who do such a great job all year long in all kinds of weather. We look forward to our continued working relationship with this dedicated and highly enthusiastic group of volunteers and we heartily congratulate Skerries on winning this award.” Fingal County Council works closely with all Tidy Town Committees in the county and we acknowledge the hard work and effort of all the volunteers which has been reflected by the improving year on year scores achieved by other Fingal entries.

Darragh O’Brien TD

“Skerries is a magnificent town, and their win is an enormous source of pride for all in the North County. The volunteers that secured the top honours are a credit to our entire community. Their tireless and year long commitment and enthusiasm for the betterment of our locality is encouraging. It is a further reminder of the importance of community spirit. In efforts towards preparation for the competition, strong links have been formed between various civic and voluntary groups in the Skerries area since the establishment of the Tidy Towns committee. I must also praise our local business owners; there are stacks of great restaurants and lots of vibrant shops on our historic streets which are helped to be maintained by the good work of Fingal County Council. The continued and collective contribution of so many secured this national accolade and recognition.”

“I am pleased that Skerries has been named the tidiest town in Ireland for 2016. This award is testament to the hard work of everyone involved in the Tidy Towns organisation in Skerries, and will be a boost to the local community in terms of further showcasing the town as a great tourist destination. The work undertaken by the Tidy Towns organisations in communities throughout the North County takes dedication and commitment from everyone involved and they certainly deserve to have their hard-work recognised. It is great to see that Skerries was not alone in ensuring North County Dublin was well represented for the work done by the volunteers in our community. Malahide was awarded a gold medal, while Lusk won a bronze medal. Furthermore, Portmarnock, Swords, Balbriggan, Ballyboughal and Balrothery also participated in the Tidy Towns competition, and I would like to commend all of those involved and thank them for their hardwork in the upkeep of our towns and villages. The work volunteers in our local Tidy Towns organisations undertake benefits not only our community but also our local economy through making the towns and the villages of the North County more enjoyable for local residents to relax in, and more attractive destinations for tourists to visit. The results of the 2016 Tidy Towns competition were very positive for the North County, and I am sure our local towns and villages will have more success in the years to come thanks to the hard-work of every individual involved.”

Strand Street, Skerries

MEP for Dublin, Brian Hayes Fine Gael MEP for Dublin, Brian Hayes has congratulated the volunteers, residents and local businesses of Skerries, after they scooped the overall prize at this year’s Tidy Town competition. Persistence paid off for Skerries Tidy Towns Committee. “I want to single out the determination and persistence of Skerries Tidy Town Committee Chairperson, Anne Doyle. The win was a timely boost for coastal Fingal following the loss of Blue Flags in Skerries in 2015 and Portrane in 2016. I have no doubt that this win will deliver a real boost for Skerries. We saw the boost that Malahide received after it won the top Tidy Towns award in 1990. The national coverage of this win will bring more day-trippers and walkers to Skerries, from all over Ireland, and be a substantial boost to local shops, cafés and restaurants. But before we look to the future we must acknowledge the tireless - and often thankless work the local committee have been putting in for years. Anne Doyle and her team, supported by residents and businesses, have been hard at work for many years making Skerries a more beautiful place. The weekly work parties, the addition of sculptures, Carnegie Library clock and plaques making points of local interest really caught the eye of the judges. Last year’s results, while excellent, were also heartbreaking, with Skerries only 2 points off the eventual overall winner. This result is proof positive that persistence pays off. We must never forget that Skerries has been entering the Tidy Towns Competition for well over a half a century, since 1959. I believe this Tidy Towns win will mark a turnaround in the fortunes of the North County Dublin coast. This is a timely boost for coastal Fingal.”

“We’re absolutely over the moon with our win after so many years of trying. We never expected it, so it’s all the better for that. Malahide were the first winners for Dublin back in 1990 and it’s great to repeat that success. We’re overjoyed and it can only be great for Skerries. We’re grateful to all of the great volunteers and to those who contributed financially. We like to pay for everything as we go, so that was a great help to us. The hope is that a lot of success will come out of this. Thanks also to the business owners who worked so hard to make their premises look great and we wish them well and hope that they will benefit from this win. Many people have come to visit the town since our win. It’s hard work, but you must keep at it if you are to be successful, no matter what. Our thanks also to Fingal County Council for their support. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Gerry Rafferty Chairperson Malahide Tidy Towns “We’re absolutely delighted with our points total, up four on last year’s total. It is a great achievement to have retained our Gold Medal status, when you consider that there are only 40 of them given out of a total of 859 entrants. We are continuing to make improvements all the time and we’re learning how to make things better. Malahide is an extremely busy town and we suffer from wear and tear, but that doesn’t deter us. I would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers and contributors for their continuing support to make sure we achieved such a great score. We would like to publicly congratulate Skerries and their excellent committee on winning the overall award and we are delighted for them. They’re only the second town from the capital city to win the Tidy Towns Award, after we won it in 1990. We are two very busy towns and it’s a wonderful achievement by Skerries and they fully deserve their great victory.”

Pat Kelly – Chairperson Lusk Tidy Towns “Lusk Tidy Towns are delighted with our Bronze medal for the second year and our result, which was up by seven points on last year. The Adjudicators’ report certainly outlines the work that we have to concentrate on for next year. The community of Lusk and members of the Tidy Towns have to be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to this end. We wish to thank Fingal County Council for their support throughout the years. Congratulations to Skerries or their great win and to all our neighbouring towns and villages in the North County. Well done to Albert Cruise on winning his Heroes Award and to all concerned.”

Ken Duffy – Chairperson Swords Tidy Towns “The last year has been a roller coaster ride for Swords Tidy Towns, starting with the IBAL report 2015 where we were positioned in the top ten best kept towns in Ireland. We then competed in the All-Ireland Cleanest Town competition, where we were placed in the final 15 out of hundreds of entrants. This year we received an invitation to the finals ceremony at the Helix for the first time. This was recognition for how far we have come, since being declared a litter black spot in 2005. We would like to extend our congratulations to Skerries Tidy Towns on their great victory. It was a marvellous achievement. We also congratulate Malahide and Lusk on retaining their Gold and Bronze medal status respectively and we will continue to draw inspiration from their successes. We would also like to extend our thanks to Fingal County Council for their support and for the beautiful floral display in the town and for their continued support for Swords Tidy Towns, as well as that of local businesses. Finally to our wonderful volunteers, a sincere thank you for all your efforts for the past year.”

Joe Troy - Secretary Balbriggan Tidy Towns “The North County had a great year in the national Tidy Towns competition, with Skerries deservedly the overall winner. Congratulations to the Skerries Tidy Towns group and their supporters for all the hard work this year and in previous years, in order to achieve this great win. Balbriggan also gained six additional points in this year’s Tidy Towns competition. This year’s total of 273 points which, when compared with to 231 points we obtained in 2010, shows an exceptional level of continuing improvement. This progress is entirely due to the great work of our volunteers, Adopt a Patch members and friends who are as proud of Balbriggan as we are and support us through the year in tackling issues and in making essential improvements to the town. Thank you for all your help and let’s keep up the hard work and do even better in the competition next year and beyond. We need more volunteers and patch adopters to help with this progress, and more importantly in making Balbriggan a pretty and dynamic seaside town with huge potential, a better place to live, work and enjoy.”

Congratulations and well done to the hard working Tidy Towns Committees of the North County for an outstanding performance in this year’s national competition from

Ross Under Fire Over Airport Runway Minister for Transport, Shane Ross has come under fierce pressure from local politicians over his decision to side with DAA, over local residents concerning the controversial new runway. Local Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has said that the Minister for Transport is potentially undermining the conditions granted by An Bord Pleanála to protect local residents in relation to the North runway at Dublin Airport. “The Minister stated that any power to regulate night-time operations at the airport will now be given to the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). He further added that a Cabinet review will now be undertaken to establish the demand, if any, to develop a third terminal at Dublin Airport,” he said. Meanwhile a spokesperson for daa said, “daa is studying the details of the new airport noise control regime and the implications of the recent announcement and we look forward to further clarity in relation to how it will operate in Ireland,” the statement concluded. Speaking following the news, O’Brien said, “I struggle to comprehend the rationale behind the Minister’s decision to grant regulative power to the IAA. An Bord Pleanála is the State’s independent, statutory, quasijudicial body which was established to decide on appeals from planning decisions nationwide. Surely removing this authority is a challenge to the democratic process. “Any reduction of the current restrictions on night-time use of the airport could dramatically affect those in the immediate locality. I have stated numerous times that I do not support the DAA in their decision to appeal the imposed stipulations of An Bord Pleanala outlined in 2007. I have previously called on the DAA to reconsider their

By Patrick Finnegan application to achieve unrestricted use of the North runway. “Minister Ross’s idea of an appropriate response to the status quo is to pervert the due planning process and without engaging meaningfully with residents in St. Margaret’s, Malahide and neighbouring areas. “The development of a second runway at Dublin Airport will allow it to grow for the benefit of the Irish economy by supporting additional trade, tourism and

foreign direct investment in Ireland. I therefore fully support the expansion however; the very genuine and serious concerns of residents must be taken into account and fully protected.” Sinn Fein TD, Louise O’Reilly was equally outraged when she told the County Leader, “Minister’s Ross’ actions are outrageous It is not acceptable that he will side with the DAA against the residents and disregard their concerns, as well as the restrictions which were decided on by

An Bord Pleanala. Minister Ross’s is aware of the real and serious concerns which the communities who were relying on these restrictions have and he has behaved disgracefully Sinn Fein will pursue this in the Dáil, at the Council and on the streets of necessary,” she said. The local Green Party are also up in arms at Minister Ross. Local councillor, David Healy and his party colleague, Joe O’Brien have accused Minister Shane Ross of conspiring with the Dublin Airport Authority to undermine the protection given by An Bord Pleanála to local residents. “The DAA have obviously courted Minister Ross very successfully. The

arrogant by-passing of the planning system and health and welfare people in St. Margaret’s, Swords and Portmarnock stinks of Celtic Tiger politicians who were ‘in the pocket’ of vested interests.” “It also speaks volumes about the height of the ivory tower Minister Ross resides in when he calls the situation at Dublin Airport ‘a crisis’ yet he doesn’t think twice about turning the other cheek when our public bus system in Dublin has ground to halt regularly of late. It’s clear that convenient flights to Rio are more important to Minister Ross than the average worker or student who might rely on the 33a,” concluded a furious O’Brien.

A 5km and 10km Charity Walk took place around Naul on Sunday, 25th September last in glorious weather conditions, in a bid to raise funds for the Oncology Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The walk, which was child friendly with many people pushing buggies was organised by Celine Reilly, a local lady from Naul, who is a cancer patient at Our Lady’s of Lourdes Hospital. Celine was delighted with the wonderful response of the people of Naul and the terrific total of ₏6725 which was raised. It seemed that the entire village came out to support her. Celine, who is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment paid tribute to Professor Brian Hennessy and his team and is hopeful that the funds raised will go some way to providing much needed vital equipment for the Oncology Unit in Drogheda. Celine paid particular thanks to all involved, including ticket sellers, people who made the tea, and to Adam and Diane Rogers, who came up with the idea of having the walk in the first instance.

Sandra Murphy Of Fancourt Heights, Balbriggan. 14th September 2016 I feel it is only right to share something. On the 14th September 2016, at 1:45am my mother sadly passed away, after battling with cancer for what seemed like the longest six months of all our lives. To see what that disease can do to a person and to all those around them is absolutely heart breaking. We had our ups and downs and like a lot of mothers and daughters our relationship was sometimes rocky but losing her so soon, at only the age of 56, was something I don’t think any of us thought we would ever have to face. I beg all my friends and loved ones please don’t smoke, don’t do anything to increase your risk of developing this disease. Cancer doesn’t care if you’re 56 or if you have plans. I never thought this was something that would happen to my family and I don’t think anyone does. When she got sick I thought she would still be here forever. I thought she would fight it, which she did, but it wasn’t enough. Please take care of your bodies. Take care of those around you. Love and forgive Life is precious and you just never know when it can be taken away. I love you Mam R.I.P Sandra Murphy (1960-2016) You’re with your Dad now You’re loving daughter Karen Thank you to the nurses and staff at St. Francis’ Hospice for the wonderful care
