Buoyant Aer Lingus Figures May Scupper Deal As the Aer Lingus/IAG saga rumbles on, new figures regarding the health of the national airline indicate that a deal is far from certain. Passenger numbers on its routes to North America - primarily the United States - soared over 25pc last month to 94,000, as it expanded services across the Atlantic. IAG, headed by Willie Walsh, wants to buy Aer Lingus to tap into transatlantic passenger growth out of Dublin. The Government is expected to examine a report prepared by a review group it appointed, to determine whether or not it should sell its 25.1pc stake in Aer Lingus to IAG. Aer Lingus has had considerable success in luring passengers from the UK and mainland Europe to Dublin to use the city as a transfer point for onward travel to North America, and particularly the US. Local Schools To Benefit From Summer Works Scheme A total of seven local schools are to benefit from the 2015 Summer Works Scheme. Some of the schools that have been approved under the popular scheme include: Loreto College Swords, Rush NS, Scoil Realt na Mara Skerries, Mary Queen of Ireland NS Toberburr, Scoil Naomh Mearnog Portmarnock, Scoil Mobhi MIlverton and SN Mhuire Garristown. The news has been welcomed by local Labour TD Brendan Ryan. He highlighted the twin benefits of the scheme - ensuring that vital school repairs take place while also generating local construction work. “I am delighted that seven schools in the North County were approved for works to be carried out under this popular scheme. This is positive news for schools and the local community as it will also provide an important capital injection to the construction sector and boost job creation,” Ryan said. “The fact that the majority of works will be carried out over the summer months means it also minimises disruption to students, teachers and other school staff.” “Many of the works can include window repair and replacement, upgrading of science and specialist rooms and external improvements such as upgrading of school perimeter fences and walls. This is an important investment that will directly benefit local schools,” he added.

The chief executive of Australian airline Qantas, Alan Joyce, recently voiced his support for consolidation in the airline industry. EasyJet is Ryanair’s biggest rival. In the first case of it’s kind, tobacco giant, Japan Tobacco International has instigated legal proceedings, in a bid to overturn proposals, which are being spearheaded by local man, Minister for Children, Dr James Reilly. Martina told the County Leader, “We have now merged with O2 under the 3 brand, providing consolidation in the market, which was badly needed. Swords-Based Airline Has Best Year Yet

21 Years Serving The Community Of North County Dublin Meanwhile, in a move which most definitely won’t go down well with some passengers, Michael O’Leary has apparently banned alcohol on some of their Caledonian flights. According to a Scottish newspaper, holidaymakers flying from Glasgow Prestwick to Ibiza will no longer be able to drink alcohol on board flights. The Swords-based airline says that no booze can be bought, and that includes any customers uncorking any alcohol based drinks bought pre-flight between the two destinations. Irish travellers are as yet, unaffected as no reports of a similar ban here on Irish shores has been mentioned. Regarding the hugely publicised Aer Lingus takeover, reports have emerged which say that Ryanair may be forced to wait another month to see whether if the decision to force the airline to cut its stake in Aer Lingus to no more than five per cent will be reversed.

Ryanair, who are based in Swords, have had their best year yet and a performance deemed “exceptional” by industry experts, as figures reveal they carried a record 90 million passengers in the last year. Ryanair carried a record 90.5 million passengers in the 12 months to the end of March - 11 per cent more than it did in the previous financial year as its reinvention continues to pay dividends. Analysts described the performance as “very strong” and shares in the carrier rose as much as 1.8 per cent last week, valuing the company at €15.3bn. Shares in the airline have gained over 50 per cent in the past year. late seventies when Brian took the step to move out on his own under the title Brian D. O’Brien & Co. The practice moved to 23 Main Street, where it continues to serve the people of Swords and the North County area. He has witnessed many changes in Swords in the past 40 years. “At the moment we are enjoying the rise again in the property market in our conveyancing business after the economic crash. If you look at the development in terms of house

building that has taken place in Swords in the last 40 years it is quite phenomenal. If someone who left Swords 40 years ago returned today they would not recognise the place. Then Swords was a sleepy little village. You could park anywhere on the Main Street and go about your business at your leisure. “It is however great to see Gerry Gannon of Gannon Homes and Michael Bailey of Bovale building again in the area,” he said. He sees the development

of the Castle area as possibly the first step towards revitalising the Town Centre and wholeheartedly welcomes the development of Swords into a sizeable town. He has noticed a change in people’s attitudes to taking legal action over the 40 years he has been in practice. “A helpful attitude towards the customer may help reduce the likelihood of a claim against them. The downside to litigation is of course that businesses are less likely to hold

parties and other events because some person may injure himself or herself and claim against them. Other, smaller organisations also find that they just cannot afford the insurance cover on an event so they do not hold it. Many playgrounds around the city were closed down for similar reasons and that is sad. The people who should benefit lose out.” Brian has noticed a changing trend in his business. “We have developed the practice of family law, where Sharon Devine deals with divorce and separation. This is an area we did not handle before, but the changing trends in society makes it a necessity nowadays. Fifteen years ago there was no divorce - it was just separations then. We do not specialise in any particular facet of the law and we are basically a general law firm that you would find in most towns.” Brian is very relieved that Swords Court survived the recent threat of cutbacks

are dealing with clients now who are the children of older clients of ours,” he says with a smile. “It can be a little disconcerting to find grandchildren of clients now buying property and it demonstrates that I am now of that vintage,” he said, with a wry smile. Brian enjoys his business and the rapport with his clients. “The practice of law is a very personal business and in a small practice such as this it is even more so. You are meeting people all of the time which is a major advantage. Most of the business that the company handles is repeat and referral business and this is very satisfying. “It is nice for us to see people coming back to us or being referred to us. It is a sign that we looked after the client well and that they were satisfied with the professional service we provide. If you do a good job they will tell some people - if you do a bad job they will tell everyone,” he said wittily.

over a number of years perhaps.” Brian enjoys his business and the rapport with his clients and he has a refreshingly old fashioned set of principles, which are based on enduring qualities of honesty, trust and integrity. This positive attitude to his clients is very welcoming and there is no doubt that Brian D. O’Brien and Co. will be here to serve the people of Swords and the North County for many years to come.

Protect Or Bronze? Enjoy The Best Of Both With NIVEA With more than three quarters of women around the world saying they’re looking for reliable sunscreen to enjoy worry-free sunbathing, new NIVEA Sun Protect & Bronze Tan Activating Protection Oil offers exactly that – sun protection and a beautiful, lasting tan without compromise. The first protecting-oil formula from NIVEA Sun, it incorporates an active ingredient - Pro Melanin – into a sunscreen formula to activate the skin’s natural tanning process, while also offering a highly effective system of UVA/UVB filters that protect the skin immediately upon application. The light, non-greasy formula is water-resistant and leaves skin feeling silky smooth to the touch. The second new development, NIVEA Sun Protect & Bronze Tan Prolonging After Sun Lotion, helps keep the summer feeling on your skin long after the sun has set on your holiday. The first NIVEA After Sun Lotion with Pro Melanin extract, this lotion activates the skin’s natural

tanning process, without the need for selftanner. The lightweight, non-sticky formula is quickly absorbed, leaving skin feeling soothed and rehydrated – while activating natural tanning at the same time. NIVEA Sun Protect & Bronze Tan Activating Protection Oil is €20.99 and NIVEA Sun Protect & Bronze Tan Prolonging After Sun Lotion is €7.99 “With our innovative NIVEA Sun Protect & Bronze range, we are able to protect the skin and activate the skin’s tanning process at the same time through the Pro Melanin extract. As soon as the skin is exposed to UV rays, it starts a protective mechanism by naturally producing the brown pigment, melanin, within the skin. Melanin gives the skin its colour and is the natural protective shield of the cell that absorbs harmful UV rays. The skin therefore protects itself by turning brown,” explains Michael Lessmann, Corporate Marketing Director of NIVEA Sun.

First Perfume Launch For Roger & Gallet 2015 sees Roger&Gallet launch their first ever Eau de Perfum. Created by world-renowned perfumer, Francis Kurkdjian and housed in a stunning cut glass bottle designed by Martin Szekely. Following on from the success of the Fleur de Figuier range, Francis has created an entirely new composition with precious distilled essences and stunning candied fig. This ingenious method creates the impression of fig in each note. The result is a sensual, all enveloping, sweet and luscious freshness; reminiscent of those seemingly endless, warm Mediterranean summers by the shores of the Esterel, in the South of France. Enriched with precious distilled essences of fig bud, mandarin from Italy, pink peppers from Ile de la Réunion and patchouli from Indonesia. The other notes of the composition are called “accord” and are the purest interpretation of the perfumer and its magical twist to re-create the smell of a pulpy or a candied fig.

He added: “I would urge as many local businesses as possible to apply, bearing in mind that the majority of Fingal businesses are eligible for the scheme,” he said.

New Late Night Football Initiative For North County The County Council’s newly opened allweather facility in Balbriggan, which is the biggest in the North County (and cost in the region of €1.3m), will play host to an exciting initiative which is being organised by O’Dwyers GAA Club. A late night Soccer league has been operating across various locations in Dublin since 2008. It is aimed at encouraging ‘at risk’ young people to participate in meaningful activities, thus reducing anti-social behaviour. This initiative has been successful to date and O’ Dwyer’s GAA club would like to build on this success through their Late Night GAA League. The aim is to bring the community together through our national sport of GAA. Gary Dunphy, O’Dwyers GAA Club told the County Leader, “Balbriggan is one of the largest and most ethnically diverse towns, with over 100 nationalities living side by side. We hope this league will encourage young people and promote further engagement with youths and communities,” he said. The league will begin on Friday the 17th of April and will run every Friday for 5 weeks with football coaches from the club on hand to give advice and encouragement to all involved. The programme is open to anyone aged between 13 and 21.

A newly launched online campaign, The One Year Initiative, wants Ireland to adopt Swiss-style people-initiated referendums. The campaign demands a national referendum on the constitutional reform needed. It calls for People-initiated referendums demanded into Irish politics. The campaign, which started just over eight weeks ago, has already held campaign meetings in Swords and Balbriggan and already has thousands of supporters across Ireland. They are now seeking public guarantees from all candidates in the upcoming general election that the next government will hold a national referendum one year after taking office at the latest. “The Irish political system is broken and the parties have failed to deliver change. Peopleinitiated referendums are an opportunity for the Irish people to re-empower themselves, make the parties work with them and ensure that no government acts against their will,” said Mark Lacey a native of Rush, who founded of The One Year Initiative. In Switzerland, people-initiated referendums allow any citizen to call for and initiate a referendum without the consent of elected representatives and even in opposition to government decisions. It also enhances accountability within the political system as it gives the public the power to remove elected officials from office before the end of their term. “People-initiated referendums with a revised referendum mechanism would complement our representative democracy, not endanger it. The reform would introduce accountability and ensure our politicians implement well thought out initiatives,” he said.

Gum Litter Taskforce Sponsors Tidy Towns Awards The Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) has announced that it will continue to sponsor three categories in the TidyTowns awards with a total prize fund of €5,000. The GLT’s partnership with TidyTowns recognises the towns and villages around the country that are working to eliminate littered gum by implementing awareness raising initiatives. The competition is a natural fit with the GLT’s campaign to encourage the correct disposal of used gum. There are two categories within the award; ‘Village and Small Town’ and ‘Large Town and Urban Centre’. The winner of each category will receive a prize fund of €2,000 with the overall winner receiving an additional prize of €1,000. The partnership with TidyTowns is a longstanding one, having begun in 2007 as part of the GLT’s national gum litter awareness and education campaign. “The Gum Litter Taskforce category has strong support from entrants with a number of repeat winners over the years including last year when Ballycanew did the double, winning the Village and Small Town award and the overall Gum Litter Taskforce award for the second year in a row,” said Paul Kelly, Chairman of the Gum Litter Taskforce.

Tidy Towns Competition 2015 Officially Underway Local communities around the North County have been busy gearing up to participate in this year’s Tidy Towns competition. Our local towns excel in the national competition year after year, and 2015 is set to be no different as each Tidy Towns committee aims to claim the coveted top award for ‘Tidiest Town.’ With the

judging not too far away, the competition was officially launched last week by Ann Phelan, T.D., Minister of State for Rural Affairs and Mr. Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu, sponsors of the competition. “The Tidy Towns Competition encourages the efforts of local people who bring huge

benefits to their communities. It recognises all the work of the Tidy Towns volun-

teers, from the planning stage to the completion of projects. It gives communities a

vehicle to come together to effect change where they live,” Minister Phelan said. Minister Phelan mentioned the significance of the work of Tidy Towns volunteers in preserving the North County’s reputation as a clean and green destination to live in, do business in and visit. “The work of the generations of volunteers on Tidy Towns committees cannot be overestimated The sense of place that develops

when communities work together and take ownership of their own surroundings is evident where Tidy Towns committees are active,” he added. This year, there will also be the inclusion of a youth category award, which will recognise some of the fine work undertaken by younger committee members. The closing date for receipt of entries for this year’s competitions is 22nd May 2015.

Local Credit Unions Ready To Help Continued from page 1 position to give the person a decision on the spot. The facility will also be open to people who are not already members of our credit union. We want to make credit available for all of our members’ needs and wants, especially where it helps to keep them out of the clutches of moneylenders.” She added, “Our message is very clear. Our doors are open, we very much welcome loan enquiries and we will do what we can to make the process as easy as possible.” Sean Staunton of Progressive Credit Union, which incorporates Balbriggan, Skerries and Donabate Credit Unions took a similar line regarding people looking for first holy communion and confirmation loans. He said, “Like many family occasions, there are significant costs associated with first Holy Communion and confirmations it is another expense which can cause financial strain for parents. If parents are not in a position to save or budget for such expenses and feel they need financial assistance Progressive Credit Union is here for our members, to offer

advice to manage these costs. Whether it is a savings plan or a loan, we will give you the right advice. We are a not for profit organisation founded and for the local community, offering fair and affordable financial services. If parents do find themselves in a position where they require financial assistance and need to borrow for special occasions, we are here to suit each individuals needs and offer an affordable and secure way to borrow,” he said. Acting CEO of the Irish League of Credit Unions, Ed Farrell said,” “We welcome the statement from Deputy O’Dea, and we look forward to the Central Bank’s review on current restrictions which will hopefully result in an easing of restrictions and allow more of our members to have access to this type of small affordable loan and prevent people from turning to money lenders at exorbitant interest rates,” The credit union had a traditional role in financing family occasions going back over 50 years. “Discretion regarding the lending of small amounts of money needs to be restored to credit unions in particular,” he said.

New Gardaí Recruits Will Aid Local Towns – Farrell Local TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality Alan Farrell (FG), has said that the announcement of the recruitment of a further 250 Garda recruits throughout the locality and beyond is encouraging. “I am pleased that the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD, has announced that recruitment will take place for a further 250 Gardaí this year. For five years, there had been no recruitment for An Garda Síochána whatsoever; however, the recruitment process was started last September and, since then, 300 Garda recruits have entered the Garda College,” Farrell explained. Farrell said that in particular, this was positive news for the North County, in terms of reducing crime rates

around local towns. “I am delighted that 250 new Gardaí are to be recruited this year, that 370 new Garda vehicles have been obtained. Ensuring we have a strong, and visible, Garda presence in local communities throughout the North County is of the utmost importance in terms of reducing crime rates. Ongoing Garda recruitment will boost the number of Gardaí on our streets, which is one of the most effective deterrents to crime,” Farrell continued. “Additional intakes to the Garda College will allow the Garda Commissioner to provide additional resources to the North County and I will continue to work with the Minister for Justice and Equality to ensure that further recruitment takes place as required,” he added.

Ethiopian Airlines Enters Transatlantic Race Ethiopian Airlines is set to use Dublin Airport as a transatlantic hub and they hope to add new North American routes from Ireland. The move could mean increased transatlantic destinations from Dublin, if the government grants the African carrier permission to provide direct competition to Aer Lingus’s hugely successful expansion of it’s own North American routes. It could also muddy the water for IAG’s takeover bid for Aer Lingus. Ethiopian Airlines is expected to begin flying into Dublin in June, serving Addis Ababa and Los Angeles, using it’s Dreamliner aircraft. The airline is expected to seek permission from the Irish government to allow passengers board at Dublin for destinations other than Los Angeles along the way, including Toronto and Washington DC. This would allow Ethiopian’s passengers to clear US customs at Dublin airport. This move however could have implications for IAG’s takeover bid for Aer Lingus, as the national carrier is likely to be concerned if Ethiopian Airlines gets access to the lucrative transatlantic market out of Dublin. Developing this market is seen as the key attraction for IAG, who are close to completing the deal for Aer Lingus

Local Soccer Easter Camps Show Record Numbers The FAI’s Soccer Sister Easter camps were held in 12 different venues across the North County. From Swords to Balbriggan and every part of the locality was catered for where girls from the ages of 7 to 12 years could enjoy the game. With the sustainable link of the camps being co-ordinated along with local clubs, they are viewed as a great introduction to football for girls and for girls who

wanted to have a fun football experience over the Easter Holidays. Commenting on the FAI Soccer Sister camps, Paul Keogh FAI/County Council Development officer said: “The number of camps continue to rise. With the Stephanie Roche exposure and also the great work of the grassroots clubs it is becoming more and more accessible for girls to play on a team amongst their friends. In the North County alone, there were 12 venues for the girls to choose from with the biggest FAI Soccer Sister Easter camp in the country taking place in Balbriggan (Gormanston) with 92 girls attending.”

Local band Grace Wilde, based in Skerries, are set to continue their rise to the top, with the upcoming release of their debut EP ‘Bring me to my knees,’ which is out now. They are fronted by Lusk singer songwriter Audrey Fay and Swords guitarist Enda Duffy. They have just started an An Irish tour, which will see the band, with Vyvienne Long on cello at some of the shows, perform at venues across the country including an EP launch in Whelans Dublin on April 26th. Grace Wilde’s front woman Audrey Fay explains the theme behind the single ‘Bring me to my knees’ – “It was written when I was a little younger and more troubled than I am now,” she told the County Leader. “It has dark confusing undertones, like the darker side of me. I felt I needed to experi-

ence those feelings, be open to them in order to heal and release.” Blending elements of jazz, blues, soul, folk and rock, Grace Wilde’s impressive performances at the YouBloom Festival in Dublin led to an invitation to YouBloom LA 2014 in California. Back on home ground, the band have been gathering fans through headline gigs at Whelan’s and other top venues.

Audrey outlined the genesis of Grace Wilde: “I began to write at age 20, which was when I first really got my teeth into it. I was single with two very young children and pretty much struggling along – but with music always being my very own beautiful escape. I met Enda Duffy in 2010, and we’ve been working together ever since,” she added.

RSA Urges Locals To Place Organ Donor Codes On Licences

ISPCC Throws It’s Weight Behind A Yes Vote The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, has joined a coalition of organisations under the leadership of BeLongTo YES, Ireland’s national organisation for LGBT young people, to support a Yes Vote in the forthcoming Marriage Equality Referendum. The ISPCC, which provides a range of services to children and their parentsincluding the national Childline service- is collaborating with Barnardos, Foróige, Youth Work Ireland, the Migrant Rights

Centre, the Children’s Rights Alliance, Pavee Point and EPIC. ISPCC Chief Executive Grainia Long said, ‘The ISPCC exists to ensure that children are afforded equal rights as citizens, to bring about a society in which all children are loved, valued and able to fulfil their potential and to assert the rights of children as equal citizens. The referendum provides an opportunity to send a strong message to children and young people across Ireland that they are valued equally-

irrespective of their sexual orientation. “The ISPCC is strongly of the view that marriage equality is a children’s issue and is in the best interests of children. Last year we saw Childline receive over 29,000 calls in relation to issues of sexuality. Children’s ability to grow up, form relationships and have those relationships recognised equally by the state is a vital factor in enabling all children to feel valued, and to feel comfortable talking about their sexuality. The ISPCC is pleased to be part of BeLonGTo YES and work with other national organisations to support a Yes vote,” she concluded.

To mark the recent Organ Donor Awareness Week, the Road Safety Authority (RSA), and the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) have asked drivers to consider declaring if they wish to become an organ donor when applying for a plastic card Learner Permit or Full Driving Licence. Since the introduction of the plastic card licence format in January 2013 the code 115 can be displayed, meaning you have indicated on the Learner Permit/ Driving Licence application form that you wish to be a donor. A total of 400,000 drivers from around the North County and beyond have been issued a Driving Licence or Learner Permit with Organ Donor code 115 from 19th January 2013 to 28th February 2015. Moyagh Murdock, Chief Executive, Road Safety Authority said “This is the first time we have ever been able to put a figure on the number of drivers who are willing to become an organ donor, through the driving licence.” “When Ireland, along with the rest of Europe changed over to a standardised plastic card format driving licence, in January 2013, one of the new features added was the option to declare a willingness to sign up as an organ donor,” he explained. “Under the new plastic card system, question 18 on the application form specifically asks the individual if they want to be an organ donor and have this displayed on their licence by referencing the code 115.” Chief Executive of the Irish Kidney Association, Mark Murphy added, “In particular I would urge anyone who is applying for the first time or renewing their driving licence to give serious consideration to becoming an organ donor and having the Organ Donor code 115 on the licence.”

Threshold, the national housing charity, has strongly criticised the review on rent supplement limits, which was published by the Department of Social Protection recently. According to Threshold, the review fails to offer any hope for rent supplement tenants in the private rented sector who are currently struggling to meet market rents. “We are extremely disappointed that this report fails to recognise the desperate plight of rent supplement tenants and those seeking accommodation under the rent supplement scheme, said Bob Jordan, Chief Executive of Threshold. “The fact that it recommends leaving rent supplement limits as they are – in the face of rapidly rising rents, severe housing shortages and growing levels of home-

lessness – is unacceptable. “Threshold helps hundreds of people each week with their housing needs, and we know from them first-hand that current rent supplement limits are not high enough to keep pace with rising market rents. As a result, families are losing their homes and, in many

cases, are facing the terrifying prospect of homelessness. “The rent supplement scheme as it stands is not fit for purpose and fails to meet the needs of lowincome tenants. This is evidenced by the rising tide of homelessness in urban centres, the widespread practice of illegal top-up payments, and the
