Swords Fire Crew Make Matthew’s Special Day Young Matthew Walsh recently had a 10th birthday to remember, when he was invited to celebrate his special day at Swords Fire Station. Matthew, who lives in Balbriggan with his parents, Avril and Gary, has a very rare genetic disorder causing severe developmental delay and epilepsy. He attends Baldoyle Special National School. His mother explained Matthew’s love of fire engines and how the invitation to Swords Fire Station was very special for him. She said, “Although he goes through a lot, he is a very happy little boy. He seems to have a keen interest in fire trucks, and when Santa arrived at Millfield shopping centre on a fire truck last year, Matthew had no interest

She continued, “My friend, Al McGee kindly put in a request for a visit to the station for a birthday treat for Matthew, and what a lovely warm welcome we received from the Station Officer and D watch. Although he couldn’t communicate it verbally, I knew by Matthew’s face and sounds, that he was delighted to have a ride on the truck, to spray the water from the hose and he loved the special attention he got with the cake and wonderful presents,” said Avril. Firefighter, Ian Lawless spoke about how honoured everyone was to have Matthew at the

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) welcomes the recent announcement by Ryanair that it will operate seven new routes and increase frequencies on 21 existing services at Dublin Airport this winter. Ryanair will operate new winter services to
Bucharest, Cologne, Lisbon, Marrakesh, Nice, and Prague. It has also indicated that it will add capacity to a range of existing services to Britain and continental Europe for the winter season. “We are delighted that Ryanair is expanding its

winter schedule at Dublin Airport,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison. “These seven new winter routes and the increased frequencies on 21 existing Ryanair services, provide the travelling public with greater choice in terms of routes served and also the number of flight options that are available to them.” Ryanair’s expansion for the winter season will contribute to additional passenger growth at Dublin Airport this year, according to Harrison. “Dublin Airport has already had a very strong start to the year, with passenger numbers up nine per cent for the first two months – which is
equivalent to about 200,000 extra passengers. These additional Ryanair services will help underpin that growth and hopefully carry it into 2015.”
Dublin Airport will also welcome 16 new services for this summer, with new long-haul and short-haul routes due to begin shortly. “We’ll have new short-haul routes from
Local Volunteers Needed For RNLI’s Mayday The RNLI is issuing its own call for help, appealing for volunteers from around the North County to help with ‘Mayday’ – the charity’s forthcoming national fundraising event in Ireland – which will be taking place from 1st to the 5th May this year. The charity is calling on people to show their support, by volunteering to help with street collections and a range of other fundraising events, which will be taking place across the locality during the five days. The charity is asking if people can give just a couple of hours of their time – maybe to get involved with a street collection or to help run an event. Events will have a ‘welly’

Pauline McGann, RNLI Community Fundraising Manager told the County Leader: “We’re now hoping people will respond to our call for help, by volunteering a bit of their time to help run some of the great events we have planned for the five days spanning the Mayday Bank Holiday weekend. We’re encouraging anyone who can spare some time to help us to get in touch.” All money raised through Mayday fundraising events throughout the North County will support the RNLI’s work in Ireland – it will be used to fund crew training, buy new crew kit, or contribute towards the running costs of a lifeboat station.

Floraville Garden Underway In Skerries Work has commenced on the much anticipated Floraville Garden, which is situated on Strand Street in Skerries. The new garden is expected to prove a valuable asset to the people of the lovely seaside town. Local councillor, Ciaran Byrne (Lab) spoke to the County Leader about how the garden came to fruition. “About two years ago, I was contacted by Martin Scully and Ollie Grimes from the local Chamber of Commerce, about this piece of land beside the library, which was locally known as the Floraville. It had become derelict. I discovered that it was in Council ownership and put down a motion at the Council, seeking their support for a project to renovate this land and to bring it into public use, as a garden for the people of the town.” The Council granted a six year lease to the Chamber on the
land, which was the first step on the road, because in order to apply for funding, they needed a lease of at least six years. He then explained, “Subsequently, the Fingal Leader Partnership received an application from the Chamber seeking funding for the project. The Chamber deserves great credit for this,” said Byrne. The garden will feature aspects of community life in Skerries, including the harbour wall, as well as colours of sporting clubs in the town. The garden is expected to be completed by June this year. President of Skerries Chamber, Martin Scully told the County Leader, “We can’t thank Ciaran Byrne enough for his efforts, and also the selfless voluntary work of so many locals, who rowed in with us in the beginning, when we had no funding. Donations began arriving at my shop, and we had professional people volunteering their services. The board of Skerries Credit Union were so supportive of us, they were like a wind at our backs and it truly reflects the generosity of Skerries people,” he said.

Rush Students Reach Formula One Finals St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush are taking part in the F1 (Formula One) In Schools competition. The team,‘Velocity Racing’ after much dedication and hard work, have made it to the National Finals of the competition, which take place on May 2nd in Dublin Castle. Emmet Sinclair, the Marketing, Communications and Resources Manager of Velocity Racing, told the County Leader about hard work that the students had put in to the project: “The competition has inspired students to use it to learn about physics, aerodynamics, manufacturing, branding, marketing, leadership and many more talents that will help them in later life. The aim of the
competition is to design a car that is as aerodynamic as possible and then to race them against other schools,” he explained. “Alongside the car, the team must acquire sponsorship from companies which helps us develop our presentation skills. Using that money we then have to buy all the items needed to bring our stand up to the level of the other teams.” The school itself is new to the competition, only joining last year. This year our team, called Velocity Racing, consisted of Alex Russell, Emmet Sinclair, Niall Leahy and Krystian Zawadzki. . “Our team worked very well together and progressed to the National Finals,” Emmet continued. This is a huge achievement for us because we are the first team from our school to have made it this far. ”We hope that we will progress even further to the International Finals, which are in Abu Dhabi this year.”

Proprietor of Cab 2000, Anthony Kelly spoke to the County Leader and explained the advantages associated with the new App. “Traditionally, people contacted taxis by phone, but with new technology, we have our own app, where the customer can download the app on to their phone and it will show our customers where their pick-up point is and they can see exactly where the driver is before they book the car. The customer can also track the car to see how long it will be before the taxi arrives to pick them up,” he said. “Another feature of the app is that you will be sent a photo of your driver, as well as information about the car. Updates are available by text, to ensure an excellent service is provided for customers, who can also make pre-bookings with the app,” he said. Local Schools To Receive Improvements Minister James Reilly has welcomed the announcement that five schools in the North County are to receive funding under the 2014 Summer Works Scheme. “I am delighted that five schools in the North County are to receive funding for building maintenance and improvement works under the 2014 Summer Works Scheme. The schools listed for grants are: Corduff National School, St Margaret’s National School, Holy Family Senior National School, St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush and St Finian’s in Swords,” he said. Reilly explained that these funds would be
used to help each local school improve their school building: “The scheme is used by schools to improve and upgrade existing school buildings. The first round of funding will allow schools to carry out small and medium scale building works across three categories of projects - Gas, Electrical and Mechanical. The five local schools receiving funding from the scheme will result in many students benefiting from the works carried out.” “A second round of the scheme will be announced in the coming weeks and will cover other types of school building
improvement works. Applications are currently being assessed for this second round of funding,” he continued.
The Skerries Chess Club meets every Tuesday night, including school holidays, in Joe May’s bar. Normally juniors attend from 7pm to about 8.30pm and adults any time from 7 pm. Coaching is provided for juniors by several of the senior players. Occasional coaching of seniors is also given by some of the stronger players or any player willing to prepare and present a topic they have studied. These mutual help groups may take the form of analysing games together thereby boosting performance in time and fostering a good team and club spirit. New members are always welcome.
“This scheme is also good for job creation, supporting 2,160 direct and 430 indirect local construction jobs across the North County and beyond.” “It is crucial that we continue to

Martina Ross, Swords “Delores is my favourite, she says it exactly how she sees it.”
Jamelia Gets North County Vote As the ever popular singing contest, The Voice of Ireland, reaches its concluding weeks, the County Leader decided to hit the streets of the North County to find out who the local public rates as their favourite judge from this year’s exciting series. The votes are in and we can now reveal that Jamelia is your favourite judge from The Voice of Ireland 2014. The British born songstress is proving to be a huge hit with the North County this year, with much of the public loving her opinionated, feisty nature and happy-go-lucky personality. Jamelia was closely followed by former Westlife member, Kian Egan, with a number of people admiring his fair judgement making and down to earth character. However, Cranberries front lady, Delores O’Riordan, divided opinions in the North County, with you either loving her straight down the line decision making, or hating her try hard attitude. In a surprise turn, singer songwriter Bressie tailed behind in last place, with not one singling him out as a favourite judge from this year’s panel. In previous years, the Dublin born judge has been a clear preference (especially with the ladies!) but given the results of our survey, it appears he may have lost a few fans during this year’s gripping series.
Historical Society Launches New Programme Of Talks Monica McManus, Ballytore “Maybe Bressie because I can’t stand Kian. I don’t like Delores and I don’t like Jamelia either so it’s got to be Bressie.”
Hilary Debeny, Dundrum “I love Jamelia because she’s so out there and she’s got an opinion. I love that girl, she’s so feisty and brilliant. I cannot stand Delores, she does my head in. it’s all about her all the time, she just tries to be so cool.”
Greg Mark, Swords “I would say Jamelia, she’s very genuine and just very good.”
Edel Sheehan, Oldtown “Jamelia. I really really like her she’s just so straight and says it exactly how it is.”
Maureen McGrane, Swords. “I like Kian. He’s very honest and fair.”
Frank Kelly, Donabate. “I would say Jamelia. There’s just something about her, she’s a very jolly, happy character.” Margaret Giles, Swords “Delores, I do think she’s very good.”
Maureen Murphy, Swords “I’d be in favour of Kian, I really like his personality, he’s very fair. Or maybe even Bressie.”
Claire Carroll, Drogheda “Kian. He came across really well in the jungle so that’s what made me like him a bit more. He’s very down to earth.”
Balbriggan & District Historical Society are delighted to announce a new and exciting programme of talks for 2014. Chairman Brian Howley told the County Leader about the exciting programme of events they have planned for this year: “We are delighted to have secured the services of some excellent speakers – starting with the local – our own Jim Walsh telling the history of our much loved Carnegie library – the subject of such an amount of controversy earlier in the year,” he said. “Then we turn to the national interest and what can be more national that the Battle of Clontarf and the demise of Brian Boru – this time we have the eminent Professor of History at NUI Maynooth Prof Colm Lennon. We are delighted that he has found time in a busy diary this year to share his research on this monumental event in Irish history.” He continued: “Then we move to something a little different but very worthwhile and interesting – ‘Uses of Photography in Ireland,
1839-1900’ by Dr. Peader Slattery. Again an expert in his field this will provide a unique insight into a topic held dear by the Irish and local public.” “We are delighted to launch this new programme of events and welcome each and everyone to join us for some very informative evenings,” he concluded.

Local Farmers Object To Walkway The much anticipated walkway/cycleway across the Malahide estuary, which will start at Malahide Castle and culminate at Newbridge House in Donabate, is widely regarded as a very welcome development for tourism in the area. However, the proposed development is a source of concern for a number of local farmers in the Donabate area.
By Patrick Finnegan Swords local election candidate, Michael Collins (NP), who is a native of Donabate, was contacted by concerned local farmers, who are angry that the new walkway will cross their land and are fearful for the safety of their animals. Collins contacted the County Leader and explained the dilemma that faces the farmers. The new walkway is planned to go through the land of three local farmers, Jack Sheehan, Francis Hand and Ivan Keeling, who are set to face compulsory purchase demands on parts of their farm holdings. Collins proposes that the walkway, upon reaching the Donabate side of the causeway should then proceed along the northern side of the Malahide Estuary to the end of the Kilcrea Road. It should then proceed directly along this estuary into Swords, linking up with the existing walkway to Malahide, thereby making a complete loop. The advantage of opening the entire estuary as a pedestrian and cycleway track, will prove a major attraction for residents of both Swords and Malahide. “While Francis and Ivan are both affected by the plans, the impact on Jack’s land will effectively mean his farm

Attending the launch was the Chairman of the Committee responsible for its introduction to the area, Aidan Staunton, Superintendent, Noel Carolan, District Officer, Balbriggan and Sergeant Kathy O’Neill from Balbriggan station and who is also Text Alert co-ordinator for the area. Speaking at the launch, Aidan Staunton said that the campaign to

Sinnott Wants New Community Fund Established
Swords Credit Union Merger To Benefit Customers A proposal to combine Swords and District Credit Union with Coolock Artane Credit Union, is to be presented to members of both credit unions at a Special General Meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 26th March. The meeting, which will take place at Fingallians GAA, is expected to rubber stamp the voluntary merger of both credit unions, who will trade under the name ‘Member First’. The move is widely seen as a very beneficial one for Swords members, which will see enhanced services, including debit card facilities and budget plan, as well as
By Patrick Finnegan doubling dividend payments to members. Manager of Swords Credit Union, Fiona Cunningham spoke to the County Leader about the impact that combining both credit unions will have on members. “Over two years ago, the Government set up the Credit Union Commission to look at restructuring credit unions in Ireland. With increased regulation, as well as services that members are looking for, you need to be able to provide for these. Swords Credit Union are ISO 27001 certified, making them one of the only credit unions in the country
to have it,” she said. Ms Cunningham was quick to point out that Swords Credit Union is not in any financial difficulties and that the merger is a voluntary move between the two credit unions. She said, “The Central Bank has not asked for this merger. It is a totally voluntary move by both of us. Over the past few months, there has been an increase in regulation surrounding credit unions, and how business is conducted. The landscape of how credit unions operate is changing, and we selected a partner who was equal in stature, with similarly skilled staff and resources. We need to ensure the

Drain Pipes and Heating While your draining system may not be the most thrilling system to consider, it is a crucial aspect to any healthy home. Your drain pipes are the fixtures which carry water waste safely away from your home, so keeping a close check on them and making sure they’re performing the way they’re supposed to be is hugely important. Enlist the help of one of the North County’s excellent plumbers to take a look at your home’s drain pipe system. Doing this will prevent you from having to fork out for expensive repairs in the future. You can also improve the functioning of your drain pipe system yourself, by simply clearing any debris from gutters to avoid April shower flooding. While your chosen plumber is inspecting your home’s outside piping system, it may be a good idea for them to check your inside one as well. Ensuring your home is being heated efficiently, could not only help keep you and your family safe, but also save you a great deal of money if any changes can be made to make your home more energy efficient.

Local Students Bring Colour To Art Competition
Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) is pictured at the new playground at Thornleigh in Swords, with local resident Geraldine Gowen and her daughter, Eve.
Second New Playground For Swords The second of two new playgrounds in Swords is now officially open to the public. After months of fundraising and hard work, the second of two new playgrounds, the Thornleigh Playground in Applewood is now open for use. Member of the local Swords Needs Playgrounds group, Marica Killi said, “We hope that the local community will take ownership for their new playground and help to look after it for many years to come as it was so desperately needed,” she said. “The playground is just waiting on benches and litter bins to be fitted and these should be in place in the next few weeks, but if
there are any litter issues, we’re asking people to please contact the County Council Parks Division.” “We hope that everyone using the playground will show respect to other users and the equipment, but should anyone experience any anti social behaviour, then please call Swords Gardai with details and descriptions,” she said. Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) is delighted with the new playground and paid tribute to Marica and the hard working committee of Swords Needs Playgrounds. He said, “It’s brilliant to see the second Swords playground opened at Thornleigh so quickly. When Marica and the committee came to me and planning permission was granted, we never expected the money to be collected so quickly. This is a wonderful facility for children in the area. Rubbish bins, which are badly needed, will be put in shortly,” he said.

Development Of Swords Castle A Priority Following the successful launch of the new Malahide Castle complex, the council’s parks division was asked what plans there are to make similar investments and improvements to other local tourism assets, including Swords Castle. The parks divisions reply was that “‘Conservation Management Plans are currently being prepared for several heritage properties owned and managed by the County Council, including Swords Castle. However, Green Party candidate for Swords electoral area, Ken Duffy is urging the local authority to be more forthcoming in their commitment to the project. He told the
County Leader, “I have a number of questions for the Council, including, what is the timeline for the Conservation Management Plan for Swords Castle. I also want to know what the budget is to be set aside, and if Swords Castle will be on the Priority of Future Capital Investment List.” Duffy, who is passionate about the development of the castle added, “Swords Ken Duffy can’t afford to wait another 18 years. The development and completion of Swords Castle would have immediate economic
tourism value to the businesses and residents of Swords, the capital town. I believe the completion of works at Swords Castle should be a matter of urgency and must not be allowed to continue as a piecemeal project, like it has for so many years.” He continued, “Works carried out so far at the castle have been outstanding and I would ask that the Council somehow find the necessary funds needed to complete this vital project. Swords Castle is by far our most under used asset, it’s potential to create jobs with tourism footfall is enormous. Swords is tired of being overlooked, always the bridesmaid and never the bride,” he concluded.

New Public Area Enhancement Scheme For Local Authority The Minister for Environment, Community, and Local Government, Mr. Phil Hogan T.D., recently announced that €2.975 million would be provided to local authorities for a dedicated Public Area Enhancement scheme for the busy summer tourist season. He told the County Leader: “2014 has been a challenging year so far for local authorities in terms of managing their public spaces due to the exceptionally inclement weather conditions we have experienced and I know that towns across the North County and beyond will be hoping for another very successful tourist season this year, following on from the success of Gathering Ireland in 2013.” “This addi-
tional, once-off fund is being provided to support local authorities’ efforts to prepare and maintain their public areas in an effort to maximise the economic benefits that can flow from increased visitors to their towns, cities and counties,” he explained. The Minister suggested that examples of work that might be undertaken, could include additional support for community groups involved in the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition, improvement works to local public parks and recreational walking areas, cleaning and tidying of older graveyards or the cleaning and making safe of derelict buildings. The funding has been allocated to all city and County Councils on a proportional basis and the Minister asked that, “wherever possible, local authorities should undertake work in co-operation with community-based groups.” All work undertaken should be additional to work already planned and must also be supplemented with 25 per cent matching funding from the local authority.

Local business among first in the country to achieve industry award AJK Motors is among the first body shops in the country to achieve new Industry Standard AJK Motors, Golf Road, Rush, Co.Dublin is delighted to announce that we have successfully achieved the new “Certified Steel Standard” (CSS) for professional bodyshops in Ireland. CSS is a national accreditation mark, which offers consumers assurance that structural vehicle body repairs have been carried out to the highest possible standard. Setup by the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) the new standard was established because of the increasing complexity of the makeup of cars and the level of expertise that is required to repair them.
“These bodyshops should be proud of their accomplishment. Their willingness to raise the standard of repairs within the industry demonstrates the passion and pride they have in their personnel and their business and most importantly in their ability to repair crashed vehicles safely and to the highest quality”

“Customers deserve the best service and the best standard of repairs when they experience the trauma of a crash repair. When a vehicle is involved in a serious crash or accident it doesn’t necessarily have to be written-off, that vehicle can be repaired to a high standard and returned to the road in a safe condition. What is important though is that you can be sure it has been properly /correctly repaired before it is returned to the
road and that is where CSS comes in” Mark Kelly says : “As a family run business established over 30 years ago by Anthony Kelly and now managed by sons Mark and John Kelly we are proud to be North County Dublin’s first crash repair centre to achieve the CSS standard. We have worked hard to achieve CSS accreditation as we feel it is important to clearly demonstrate to our customers that our bodyshop is committed to the highest level of quality and safety standards. The CSS certification will give consumers confidence that after an accident that their car has been repaired to manufacturers standards and returned to pre-accident condition using state of the art tools and equipment. All work is carried out by fully trained technicians who pride themselves on turning out highest quality workmanship. Our staff’s commitment and dedication has been vital in achieving the CSS standard as well as receiving approvals from VW Ireland as well as other manufacturers. We see these standards as vital going forward as they reassure our customers and the general public of our commitment to excellence

An analysis of road fatality statistics has revealed that almost one in five vehicle occupants killed in 2013 were not wearing their seatbelt at the time of the collision, meaning that as many as 21 lives could potentially have been saved if they had been wearing their seatbelt. This was announced at the launch of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána’s recent St Patrick’s Weekend Road Safety Campaign. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Leo Varadkar TD told the County Leader, “A lot of progress has been made over the last decade, but too many people are still putting themselves at risk, and the safety of others, by not buckling up in the car. The Government’s Road Safety Strategy has set a target for full compliance on seatbelt wearing by 2020, but there is every reason to meet that target sooner. Wearing a seatbelt is one of the easiest

ways to ensure that you, and everyone in your car, stays safe if you crash. So buckle up, and make sure everyone else in your car does the same.” “Our message is simple – make smart choices about how you use the roads: never ever drink or drug drive, don’t speed and make sure you and your passengers are wearing your seatbelts before you set off on a journey, no matter how short,” he continued. Assistant Commissioner John Twomey, An Garda Síochána said: “In recent years, we have seen a marked change in how people use the roads but unfortunately, people continue to take risks by not ensuring that they and their passengers are properly restrained in a vehicle.” An RSA observational study of seatbelt wearing rates conducted in 2013 among 20,000 car users found that 94 percent of drivers, 93 per cent of front passengers and 89 per cent of rear passengers were observed wearing their seatbelts. Women were found to be more compliant than men with 97 per cent of female drivers belting up compared to 92 per cent of male drivers.

Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for a very special one (mention request). Take it dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and the favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail K.M
