New Location Confirmed For Malahide School EXCLUSIVE
that this arrangement would last until a suitable site was acquired for building the new school. The date for the commencement of the new school is uncertain, but the expectation is that a new building will be required, as the old rugby club clubhouse is unlikely to be suitable for the new school. Farrell believes that September 2017 would be a likely date for the opening of the school. Farrell continued, “I have long held the view that Malahide required an additional primary school to cater for growing demand. As far back as 2006, I made an enquiry with the planning department of Fingal County Council and the Department of Education and Skills as to the provision of a site in the Malahide/Portmarnock area. At the time, I was mistakenly informed that the provision of such a site was not required. With its growing young population, there is no doubt in my mind that further investment in classroom space will be necessary in the coming years, particularly at second level. The progression of the new Malahide/Portmarnock primary school will be great news for many families in the wider community as it will assist in tackling the capacity issue which many of our primary level schools are currently facing,” he concluded.
County Leader
There is great news for parents and schoolgoers in Malahide, with the news that a site has been selected for Malahide/Portmarnock Educate Together primary school. Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) confirmed exclusively to the County Leader that it is his understanding that the site of the Old Rugby Club on the Back Road, Malahide is likely to be the future home of the Malahide/Portmarnock Educate Together primary school.
By Patrick Finnegan Confirming the news, Farrell said: “Local sources have informed me, following discussions between Fingal County Council and the Department of Education and Skills, that the site of the Old Rugby Club on the Back Road, Malahide, is being considered as the future home of for the new Malahide/Portmarnock Educate Together. While the Department of Education and Skills could not confirm the finality of the agreement, it is my understanding that the old clubhouse, vacant for over ten years, would be renovated and utilised as a school building. As the demand for places increases, a new school building will be provided on the site,” he said. Farrell was very positive about the impact that such a move will have on the immediate area in
“Sites in Portmarnock were actively considered; however, after much discussion, I have been informed that the site of the Old Rugby Club was the most favourable option, particularly in terms of facilitating future levels of demand for primary school places.” “Once it is confirmed that the site has been selected for the new primary school, the process can continue Alan Farrell TD is pictured on the site of the old Malahide Rugby Club, with the clubhouse to move forward and in the background. It has been earmarked as the location for the new Malahide we shall have a new Portmarnock Educate Together National School school in our local Malahide. “The importance of this community in the coming years.” At present Malahide/ Portmarnock Educate Government’s investment in the school not only benefits the educational framework in the Together primary school has been up and community, but it would also provide a vital running since last September and they have piece of social infrastructure to the local area, one class of about 20 junior infants, with a particularly as the Back Road will be developed principal, a teacher and a support teacher. Men’s Shed For Balbriggan Great enthusiasm greeted the announcement that Balbriggan is now the latest town in the North County to have its own Men’s Shed. The Men’s Shed Movement started in Australia in the 1990’s and has spread rapidly throughout the country, as well as other parts of Europe. Local man, Sean Corrigan who has been instrumental in establishing a men’s shed in Balbriggan, told the County Leader how the idea was formulated. “The new initiative was launched last Tuesday, when we took possession of our new premises at Sarsfield House on Mill Street in the town. Already we have 30 members to start with, which has been very well

There is great excitement and it promises to be a very interesting story and we are getting great support from everyone. We intend to be very active in the community and can help the local Tidy Towns, by making planter boxes etc. This is all about positive mental health, and will have a very beneficial effect on the town,” he concluded.

Ryanair’s intentions for its stake in Aer Lingus will have to be declared before a Cabinet decision on the sale of the airline can be made. State’s holding in the airline has still not been reached, six months after British group IAG made its first bid. Speaking about the issue, Tánaiste Joan Burton said: “Clearly, there are ongoing issues in relation to Ryanair and the approach that they take.” When pressed as to why there has been such a delay, she said the role of Ryanair is a complicating factor and
clarity is needed. “Remember, it is not just the Government which is involved in this. There is a significant stake held by Ryanair and how they approach that will be very significant in any decision being made.”

Balbriggan Girl Lights Up The Stage
Hannah Hawkshaw
Talented Balbriggan girl Hannah Hawkshaw, recently gave a starry performance at the Gibraltar International Song Festival competition, coming in third place. Hannah spent months preparing for this event, and it was her first time entering a competition for songwriters. it was also the actual debut performance of the song itself, which must have been nerve wracking for this local girl, but she still performed to the absolute best of her ablitities. It was a

She also designed her costume herself which was then brought to life by a designer in Marbella. Hannah was the last to take the stage, on a night where top class performances and the interval act Bjorn Again, rocked the house. It was

Students from Skerries Community College came out on top at the recent SciFest@ITB event for their project exploring the use of Halophytes as Carbon Sinks. Skerries students, Sophie Sheehan and Adam McGrane won the SCI Discover Best Project Award at SciFest@ITB. The pair beat off stiff competition, as 220 postprimary school students from 25 schools all over the North County and beyond took science to the next level with exhibitions of over 100 projects on display. Of the over 100 projects exhibited at the SciFest, the top prize on the day went to Sophie Sheehan and Adam McGrane from Skerries Community College for their project; ‘Exploring the Use of Halophytes as Carbon Sinks’ Commenting on the final, Sheila Porter, SciFest CEO said: “2014 saw a record number of students and schools taking part in SciFest, with more than 6,000 students exhibiting almost 2,600 projects in schools and Institutes of Technology across the country. Each year, more and more students are entering SciFest, demonstrating their interest in STEM and adopting an inquiry-based approach to their learning, which is hugely positive. Through participation in SciFest, students develop their creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills, all of which are transferable skills for later in their careers or academic lives.” According to Aideen Hodgins, SciFest co-ordinator at ITB, the competition provides an excellent opportunity for post-primary students to see the world of science, engineering and maths from a different prospective. “Seeing the innovative projects and experiments and chatting to students about their work is what the day is all about. This year the standard is very high and previous winners have gone on to further accolades including winning the BT Young Scientist,” she added.

Medals Abound For Swords Karate Club Students of Swords Karate Club took home a staggering amount of medals, 37 in total, and including 9 National titles from the recent JKS National Championships. Clubs from all over Ireland attended the championship held in Tuam, Co Galway on Sunday 17th May, and the Swords students were up against some very tough competitors across the disciplines of kata (forms) and kumite (fighting). The success of the club at national level is directly attributable to the standard and quality of instruction students receive from club instructor, Dermot O’Keeffe Sensei 6thDan, who is himself a World Champion in the sport. Sisters Ali and Jennifer O’Keeffe took the national titles in both the Junior and Senior kata and kumite individual events respectively, a total of four individual national titles between them. They then went on to successfully captain their teams and take national titles in
the Junior and Senior Kata events with club mates, Rachel Smith and Athar Farooqi on the Junior team and Emma O’Neill and Jolanta Ploskonka on the Senior Team. One of the youngest students to compete, Ashad Farooqi took the National title in the Gohon Kumite for 8 – 10 year olds while Gess Kolkovskij took the title in the Veterans (Over 40s) Kata. Philip Kennedy and Paul Fitzpatrick kept the winning streak going for the club by taking the National title and runner up position in the Senior Men’s kata category proving that karate is not just for kids. Based in Swords for the past 14 years, Swords Karate Club provides a range of structured Karate classes for all age groups from age 4 upwards in the full time karate facility in Seatown Business Campus and new members are welcome to join at any time during the year. We asked: “Is it time we had female priests in Ireland?” Miriam Fritsch
Lisióe Schuck
Terry Quinlan, Ballyboughal Yes, we should. Why not? They have as much to offer as men, so I don't see why not.
John O’Keeffe, Dublin Yes, there are very few male priests. Swords cut down the number of masses because they hadn't enough priests. Women would be just as good, probably better.
Nicola Cleary, Swords Yes definitely. It is 2015 now and I also think it should be allowed for priests to marry as well.
William Phillips, Swords No, Christ founded the Catholic religion when he picked twelve apostles. That is not to underestimate the role of women in the Catholic Church. There are many things that they can do in the church.
Gillian Hand, Swords Yes, absolutely. In the Church of Ireland they have female priests. I don't see why not in the Catholic Church as well.
William Abbott, Ballymount Yes, I think it is time. Why not? I think they do a great job in the church anyway. The women do marvellous work and they are not recognised in the religions although they do great work.

Speaking about the event Mayor Murray said: “The impact of this has been largely very positive with new business ideas, cultural richness and languages now enjoyed and embraced throughout the county. Young families from all over the world are making their homes in the rich and vibrant county that is the North County. There are, none the less, many challenges that come with great change over a relatively short period of time.” “The North County is one of the youngest and most diverse counties in Ireland and arguably one of the fasting changing urban areas in terms of ethnic diversity in Western Europe. Over 85,000 individuals have become new Irish citizens since 2011 and many thousands have made their homes here,”
she added. The conference explored and pointed towards solutions to these challenges into the future “There was a wide variety of speakers at the event

Yes, it would be about time we had some female priests in Ireland. As a matter of fact there are hardly any male priests. The masses up here have already been called off because there are not enough priests. So we want lady priests. The sooner the better.
Tom Maguire, Donabate No not yet. I cannot give a sensible reason but at the beginning a law picked out men for this. So I would say no.
Oliver Grogan, Swords I have no reason why there shouldn’t be female priests. Women can do a job as good as a man. I have no problems with that. It will happen eventually. It is going to happen. Even the pope wouldn't be against this.

Helmut Scholz (DE). He is GUE/NGL shadow rapporteur on recommendations to the European commission on the negotiations for the transatlantic trade and investment partnership (TTIP). Members from all political groups serving across 14 committees of parliament have tabled 898 amendments to the report on negotiations issued by the TTIP rapporteur and S&D member, Bernd Lange. Scholz complains that the Commission did not make an effort to find out what the citizens actually want in the agreement and his group has tabled a motion seeking the suspension of negotiations, until the citizens have been fully consulted. Should the motion be successful, the Group has not said how the Commission should consult with the citizen on what is a complex series of trade deals covering a wide number of very different sectors and interests. Those supportive of progressing the deal say that it will have very real benefits, not only for trade, but will create employment opportunities across all sectors. FG MEP, Séan Kelly hosted an informa-
tion Seminar here in Dublin called “TTIP and Ireland: Boosting our Economy through Trade” Séan says that “the agreement stands to bring considerable additional economic benefits to Ireland”. That view was reflective of the view expressed by Dublin MEP, Brian Hayes when he visited the North County a couple of weeks ago. The agreement is indeed complex, but the economic benefits which can be created for both the EU and the US are considerable. Some of the aspects are simple common sense, but there are others which do indeed need careful consideration to ensure that, in the drive for maximisation of trade, that no undue advantage should fall to either side or indeed to the corporate sector versus the consumer. It seems to me that the process of consultation placed on the Commission when it was given its negotiating mandate, is such as to ensure that those with comment have plenty of opportunity to do so through their MEPs and National Parliamentarians as the final text must be passed by the EU and National Parliaments.

Big Row Home For Malahide Sea Scouts The always active Malahide Sea Scouts are busy preparing for their most extreme challenge yet, all to raise much needed funds for the redevelopment of their scout den.
“On June 26th-27th we are pushing one of our East Coast rowing skiffs and her crew to the extreme, by doing a 100km challenge across the Irish Sea from Holyhead, Wales to Malahide,”
explained the scout group. Crews will row day and night battling weather and tide, testing their navigation skills and working together to pull each oar-stroke, closely monitored by the
support boats. Not only will it be an incredible experience for the crews involved, but it’s all to help raise funds for the re-development of our home, our scout den,” the group continued. “Our scouts have been training, passage planning, managing logistics and equipment check lists since early in the year to prepare for this event.” The group also
explained why such an event and all the fundraising was necessary, and their reasoning for needing the den revamped. “Our current den, completed in 1984 has served us well. But 30 years on with 600 members through its doors every week, the wear and tear is becoming evident. No wheelchair access, outdated infrastructure, a leaking roof, and insufficient meeting/ training space, a
makeover is long overdue. These funds will go towards building an extension and making the necessary improvements. The cost of the re-development is approximately €600,000. Any support in raising these funds is greatly appreciated.” The group have been busy fundraising over the past number of weeks, and will be doing more of the same in the run up to the event itself, so they appreciate all support.

FUNDRAISING DINNER Pictured is Enda Martin, proprietor of Centra, Swords as he is congratulated on the refurbishment of his shop, by CEO of Fingal Dubin Chamber, Tony Lambert
Expanding For Success In Swords Centra store, which is located in the centre of Swords Main Street, on the site of the former Clarke’s shop, has undergone a major renovation due, in the main, to an upturn in business, as a result of increased footfall in the town. Proprietor, Enda Martin spoke to the County Leader about how the business has successfully survived the ravages of the recession, and has emerged with a strong and vibrant business. He said, “Over the last number of months, having discussed with our management and staff, ways we could improve our business. We carried out a detailed customer survey to try and identify changes or improvements we could make to our store. Taking the results of the survey into account, we decided to carry out a refurbishment of the shop,” he said. “We laid out the store to make it easier for customers to shop, as previously our old store was clut-
tered. with a limited range of products and long queues. We expanded our off licence, as well as our deli, soup and coffee, while introducing Carte d’Or scooped ice cream. We also introduced a florist to complement our business.” Another part of the expansion was the introduction of a new seating area to the rear of the store, where customers can relax and enjoy a coffee. Martin has noticed a new vibrancy in Swords with the likes of Empire opening and the imminent opening of Wetherspoons at the Old Borough. “Along with our own refurbishment, there is a real feeling that Swords is a place to do business. We now need to expand this through the current shops in the town, in the hope that Swords can return to the vibrant trading town that it was before the recession. We’re certainly going in the right direction,” he concluded.

North County and beyond. Retail was one of the industries hardest hit during the recession, according to figures, with more than 40,000 jobs lost and shops closing in many towns and villages across the country. However, it remains a significant employer with 15 per cent of the population or approximately 270,000 people working in retail. At a special meeting of the Retail Consultation Forum, Minister Nash led a discussion to examine ways to support retailers to grow and maintain jobs around local towns. Those who attended examined how to maximise opportunities as consumer confidence begins to grow again. “While the retail recovery is modest to date, it is certainly going in the right direction and this is an opportune time to examine how all of us – individuals, businesses, community as well as local and national Government - can make a difference in supporting our local shops and retailers,” Minister Nash said. “I believe there are valuable lessons to be learned from this and other initiatives, which we can now apply to the retail sector around the locality in a growing economy, rather than one in the depths of crisis,” he added.

North County Loses 152 Gardaí Over Five Years The North Dublin Metropolitan Region has lost nearly a fifth of its gardaí, according to new figures received by Fianna Fáil. Garda numbers at some stations in the area are down even more than 20 per cent over the last five years, according to the party. There is now a total of 673 gardaí working in the North Dublin Garda Region, which covers Balbriggan, Garristown, Lusk, Rush, Skerries, Malahide, Swords,
Howth, Coolock, Clontarf, Raheny, Ballymun, Santry and Dublin Airport garda stations. That compares to a total of 825 gardaí in the same area five years ago. Local Senator, Darragh O’Brien has said it’s clear evidence of the

dramatic cuts to garda resources in Dublin over the past five years, while crime in the community has increased. “This is a damning indictment of this Government’s lack of commitment to community policing. Not only did Fine Gael shut down Rush Garda Station, downgrade Malahide Garda Station and cut resources across our other local stations, they have also cut garda numbers to dangerously low
levels. And communities across the North County are suffering the consequences,” said O’Brien. “There is absolutely no doubt that the surge in burglaries, thefts, anti-social behaviour and drug related crime in our communities is directly linked to the slash and burn of local garda resources. Despite going above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis, the bottom line is that the gardaí are stretched beyond their limit and they simply do not have the manpower to maintain a strong presence on our streets and engage in robust crime prevention

This reasoning has been backed up by other families in the North County, who have also spoken to this newspaper. Kiva said that Kelly was fit and healthy before receiving the vaccine, but now suffers from symptoms including headaches, excessive fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, gastrointestinal discomfort, nerve-related pain, sleep disruption and light sensitivity. She has also been treated for fibromyalgia and has chronic pain. Kiva says that she is not anti-immunisation and has given her consent for other childhood vaccines for Kelly. She just wants to raise awareness of the possible side effects of the HPV vaccine. She would also like support for Kelly, so that she can continue education, as she hasn’t attended school for the past four years. The County Leader contacted the HSE to find out if there was a safety issue surrounding the Gardasil vaccine. A spokeswoman said, “Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide. Each year in Ireland around 300 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 100 die from the disease. All
Some of these girls come from the North County, and their parents claim the human pappilomavirus (HPV) vaccine, administered to teenagers to protect against a virus that causes cervical cancer, has caused long-term health difficulties in their daughters. The support group is called REGRET and its aim is to inform parents before giving consent to allow their children to be vaccinated with HPV vaccine. Gardasil is the ingredient in the HPV vaccine, which the group claim has caused the damage to their daughters. that figuring out what to do with your garden can be a headache, there are a few cheap and easy ways to brighten up your garden if it is say a rectangular grass space. If you have an old shed that the colour has long but faded and it actually brings down the mood of the garden, paint it a bright vibrant colour to really make it pop. Two cartons of exterior paint will only probably set you back around €50 depending on quality of paint and brand. To complement your shed, some garden furniture would provide some seating, so you and others can enjoy your garden together while having dinner or even some lunch. Paving slabs can make a great difference to your garden and they provide a low maintenance option, where you can relax and soak up the beautiful summer weather that we all expect to arrive soon. Another idea would be to put down about a fifteen centimetre bark border on the perimeter of you garden to give the garden some depth and warmth. If you're looking for more of a drastic makeover, then a good idea may be to install a water feature or even a pond, where plants can reinvigorate your space. If you are in doubt about what plants to buy, your local garden centre will be happy to give you excellent advice. Plants can be bought quite cheaply and can bring colour into your
garden. At night, lights could be an option to illuminate your garden and when done correctly and with the help of an electrician, can really make it look special but that can be on the expensive side, nevertheless it can really be worth it. After you've made your garden look pretty, you now need it to work as a useable space, much like any room in your house. There is no point in having a beautiful modern kitchen with marble as far as the eye can see, when you've no space for any plates or bowls and it's the same with
your garden. A good plan would be to have a barbeque out in the garden with a good sized table to eat your food. The problem however is that any heavy tables or barbeques, the legs will sink into the grass making the surface uneven and ruining your grass, leaving holes. An alternative would be to get some decking laid down, which looks excellent in a garden especially when in curved shapes and lovely wood. It also provides a level safe area that you can put your table, chairs and barbeque safely and high heels can be worn
walking on it too and is very low maintenance. All of these things can be added to make your garden ready for summer, but more importantly for the rest of the year as well and a better garden adds
value to your house. So take a few easy steps and make your garden look amazing with little money and little effort for this summer, next summer and for many summers to come.

Minister Visits Loreto College Swords On Tuesday, 19th May, Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan visited Loreto College Swords. It was the first visit of a Minister of Education, since Mary O’Rourke opened the school in 1988. This visit was following a request made by the Board of Management and a recent visit of Brendan Ryan TD (Lab). The purpose of this visit was to highlight the capacity issues and the constraints of the current school buildings and facilities. The Minister was warmly welcomed by the staff and students in the college. She was greeted by the school chaplain, Ms Cronin and signed the visitor’s book. She received a guided tour of the school building where the students in many subject areas showcased their achievements particularly in areas of technology, business, art and science.
The Minister was impressed by the positive atmosphere that exists between the walls of Loreto College and she made a commitment to the Students Council representatives that the sports facilities, school canteen and a school library would be on her priority list in the near future. The Board of Management of Loreto College delivered a presentation on its enrolment process and the issues that the school faces with oversubscription and long waiting lists. They also highlighted their concerns around specialist rooms in the school and the school’s need for an extension. Emily Geoghegan and Niamh O’Sullivan, two students in the school informed the Minister about student concerns before presenting her with a bouquet of flowers. The Board of Management and Chairperson, Gerry Sinnott thanked Minister O’Sullivan for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit Loreto College and for listening and taking on board the concerns of the school.

O’Brien Demands Firm Commitment On Balbriggan School Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has demanded an immediate commitment from the Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan on the future of Balbriggan Community College. It follows revelations that the Government has pushed the school’s redevelopment plan back to Stage One, so the school has effectively been thrown back to the drawing board, more than three years since its PE hall was demolished. This is despite the Minister providing firm assurances to O’Brien in the Seanad less than three weeks ago that the

Dramatic Outing For Swords Youths The always active Swords/ Baldoyle Youth Service were out and about last week, and paid a visit to the theatre to see a thought provoking new production. The Community and Education Department is working to open up Ireland’s national theatre to enable everyone to take part in and enjoy the arts. As part of this programme, the Department staged Paddy Cullen’s
play ‘Deadly’ at The Peacock Theatre in the city centre. ‘Deadly’ is a story about the consequences of an act of violence. The play depicts the pack mentality of gang culture – and specifically knife crime – very realistically, pulling no punches. It is based on real events in its author’s native Edinburgh. Playwright Paddy Cullen said of the piece: “I couldn’t understand how a city

He said: ‘I can assure you that officials in my Department are progressing matters with a view to advancing both projects to tender and construction stage as soon as possible’. “It now seems that this wasn’t true. In reality, the project has been kicked back to the drawing board. Is it a case that the Minister was given the wrong information by the Department? Or was the wool deliberately pulled over our eyes? I have written to the Minister demanding immediate clarification on this. “It is particularly worrying that not one local Government TD attended a recent meeting in the school about the redevelopment plans. This has added to concerns about their real commitment to the future of this school. “The people of Balbriggan deserve proper education facilities. Leaving a large local school without essential basic facilities for such a long period is simply not good enough. Now students, parents and staff have absolutely no idea if and when this crucial development will go ahead,” he concluded.

They unanimously declared it to be an exciting, thought-provoking theatrical experience and one that would stay with them for a long time.

Church Street, Skerries. Tel: 01 8495001 Rockabill Restaurant in Skerries is celebrating its first birthday this month. This modern and tastefully decorated restaurant, which is ideally located on Strand Street in the town, opposite the Floraville Garden, was first opened to the public on 26th May last year. In that short time, it has developed a reputation for excellent food, great value for money and a friendly staff who will go to any lengths to satisfy the customers’ needs. Proprietor, Sandra Duff is very excited about her latest venture, which has enjoyed a very successful first year in business. “There’s a lovely atmosphere about the place, which can cater for 40 diners. We are constantly upping our game and every Saturday night we have live music and it’s something that Skerries didn’t have up to now and it’s proving to be very popular.” “We’ve rearranged all our menus and we have a new day menu and a new a la carte menu and we are now launching our new early bird menu, with a particular emphasis on fish. We source all our products locally, all of which is bought fresh, even down to our sauces which are Proprietor, Sandra Duff (centre) is pictured with staff members, made by our chefs,” she said. The patio area fronting on to Strand Street is a particular favourite with customers, where there is full sun in the afternoon and evening, weather permitting. This area can hold 30 people comfortably. Sandra is very conscious about the local community and insists on hiring local people and sourcing her products locally. There is a distinctly warm and inviting feel about Rockabill Restaurant, with its beautiful colouring and modern furniture, which draws you into the place. Sandra has introduced an offer, where children eat free with every adult meal served on Thursdays. The restaurant is also completely wheelchair accessible, where customers with a disability can enjoy their meal in comfort.

Minister Visits Swords Schools
Pictured here are teachers Sarah Doyle, Ciaran Reade, Thomas Cashin and Roisin McGowan from St Joseph's Secondary School in Rush at the Uganda Ball.
Graduation Ball For Rush Students Third and fourth year students of St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush are taking part in a once in a life time experience. They are going on an immersion programme to Uganda for two weeks next February.
By Emmet Sinclair To celebrate this and the fourth year’s graduating after an excellent year in Transition Year, the students wanted to finish it off in a similarly excellent fashion with TY Graduation/Uganda Ball. Students, who were going to Uganda, were thinking of fundraising ideas and they came up with the idea of holding a Graduation Ball for the Transition Years and it was to be organised completely by the TY’s, as the third year students were busy preparing for their Junior Certificate exams. The ball was held in St Maur’s GAA
Club in Rush and was a great success, where teachers and students mixed easily and a great night was enjoyed by all. Tickets cost €15 and the students felt it was a reasonable price, enough to raise a worthwhile amount of money for the trip, but not enough for people to feel overcharged. A dress code of ‘Dress To Impress’ was decided upon and the students pulled out all the stops and everyone looked very impressive. On the night itself, all of the students involved with the organising of the ball were amazed at how well the hall looked, as was everyone else, even the teachers. The DJ played some classic dance tracks and well known foot-tappers and in no time at all, everyone was up on the floor. Many pictures were taken, many facebook statuses were made and many laughs were had. All in all the students had a great time, the teachers had a great time, a big chunk of money was raised for the Uganda trip and now the teachers plan to have a TY Graduation ball every year because of the successes of this year.

Tuesday, 19th May last was a red letter day for two Swords schools, Fingal Community College and Holy Family SNS, when Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan came to visit them. The purpose of the visit was to present the two schools with their awards for winning the National Mathletes Championships in the secondary and primary schools competition respectively. This is the second year in a row that Fingal Community College have won this event, and they hope to win a three-in-a-row next year. Mathletes is a national maths competition contested by over 13,000 students. Principal of Fingal Community College, Sharon McGrath said: “It was yet another proud day in Fingal Community College when Jan O’Sullivan TD, Minister for Education and Skills visited our school to present the Mathletes trophy to the winning team of students.” “Two years ago Mathletes was introduced to our school by Ms. Chaney and very quickly the other Maths teachers could see the appeal and the effect this was having on students and very soon students in other classes and other year groups wanted to participate. Participation in Mathletes has transformed the teaching and learning of mathematics in the school and made maths fun and engaging,” she said. An interesting connection between Fingal Community College and the primary school champions, Holy Family SNS, is that Fingal student, Hannah Leonard was on hand to coach the Holy Family students to success, so she played a vital role in both victories. After her visit to Fingal Community College, Minister O’Sullivan then went to Holy Family SNS, where she was greeted by Principal, David O’Keeffe. As she presented the cup, she commented that Swords must surely be the Maths Capital of Ireland. Holy Family defeated more than 300 other Irish schools to win the National title with an astounding 103,781 Maths skills Mastery points, more than 15 times the average score for schools in the competition. Principal David O’Keeffe said, “One of the great benefit of Mathletes to our school was the opportunity it gave to all pupils, irrespective of their level of competence in Maths, to improve their Maths skills and overcome the mystique of Maths, or any fear they had for the subject. Working closely with their teachers, they experienced a challenging but enjoyable way to develop their understanding of Maths. Minister O’Sullivan, praised the school and its pupils for their great achievement and advised the children to continue developing their Maths skills as this would open up huge opportunities for them in the future.

How To Conquer Exam Stress Exams are just around the corner for students all over the North County, and they are reaching the final hurdle before things kick off in June. It’s worth remembering that exam season is as stressful on their family members as on the students themselves. Whilst some exams nerves can be a motivating force, pushing your child to be better, it is important to stay on top of the pressure as it can easily disturb the entire household. Getting a decent eight hours sleep during exams is important for students and family members during exam time. No matter how caring you are, there is always the wish you could do more to support your stressed son or daughter. When the day seems a little too much to handle, a popular option is also a Rescue Remedy. It is a combination of five original Flower Essences specially blended to provide support in times of emotional demand. The flower essences are Star of Bethlehem, Clematis, Impatiens, Rock Rose and Cherry Plum
Balbriggan Tourist Office Is On The Move Local councillor Tony Murphy (NP) has said that he has convinced the County Council to relocate the Tourist Office into the civic buildings on St. Georges Square in Balbriggan. “While we were happy to have a tourist office in Balbriggan, it needed to be more visible and have a central location,” he said. “This will lead to an opportunity to
and it can be used anytime, anywhere and is suitable for all the family. A good and balanced diet also plays a big part on the student performance and the entire family can benefit from a fresh and healthy meal. Choose a high-energy breakfast, combining oats with chia seed and goji berries with almond milk (all containing high levels of magnesium and B vitamins). Salmon, trout, sardines and mackerel are rich in omega 3 fats and a great source of protein for lunch or dinner. A good fruit smoothie or an avocado mousse will do wonders to improve the memory and naturally boost the brain. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water.
convert the old tourist building into an interim space for a maritime museum. The maritime museum committee have been working long and hard to find a location to display their historical maritime artefacts,” Murphy explained. The ideal offering for the town to have would be a cultural centre to offer space for exhibitions, cultural events and maritime/industrial museum space. As this is long overdue we need to start the process. This could be the start of the positive physical changes that are needed for our town,” he said.
