American TV Hit

Four Swords sisters have made a huge impact on American TV audiences, when the pub they jointly own in San Francisco appeared on one of America’s most popular reality television programmes. The sisters, Marissa, Leona, Danielle and Natalie Browne from Estuary Court in Swords shot to fame when their pub, The Patriot House, which is located in the financial district of San Francisco, was chosen to feature in the popular American TV show, Bar Rescue. The show is compered by top US TV personality, Jon Taffer, a Gordon Ramsey like person, who takes no nonsense. The programme is featured on Spike TV which is a premier channel, similar to HBO in America. The County Leader caught up with two of the

We applied to appear on the show and it took us about nine months and about 10 interviews to be chosen and we were delighted that it came about.” “Prior to this, we didn’t know if we were an Irish Bar, a tavern or a saloon. We really had no proper identity as such, even though we had Irish memorabilia on the walls. Jon Taffer came in and changed the name of

They changed our menus and trained us on how to prepare different drinks, like cocktails and the like. Danielle said that what Jon Taffer gives you is a cohesive brand, all the way from front of house to the bar and this is what the four of us were struggling with,” she said. Marissa who is 39 years old first came to America

when she was 19 and she started working in a bar and opened her own bar seven years later. She owned this bar for 10 years before she joined up with her three sisters in the new bar. “We got lucky to have had the exposure of such a show. We are in an area that has poor exposure, but this has catapulted us to fame,” said Marissa. “Our sales have sky rocketed since the show and Bar Rescue.” “I think Jon Taffer is amazing and he has transformed our lives for the better and we have had calls from Kansas and other states in

America, where people want to come and visit the pub that featured on the nationwide show.” “I think the fact that the bar was owned by four Irish women was

certainly different and appealed to the TV company, particularly as this is still an area where men are more likely to be the owners,” said Marissa.

Progress On New Playground For Rush Plans are coming together to give Rush a new playground. Following a successful public consultation, the Council hope to soon proceed with the development and build of the playground. In the first quarter of 2015, the County Council in association with local community groups, Rush Playground Group and the Rush Liaison Committee undertook an examination of potential locations that would be suitable for the provision of a playground to serve both residents and visitors to Rush village. At Council level, it was decided that the best location would be centrally positioned at Harbour Park.

Earlier this year, the news of invited to provide submissions or progress on the development of the observations with respect to the playground was welcomed by local proposed plan. resident and Minister for Children Various issues regarding the and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly, proposed playground were raised in who told the County Leader these submissions. “This is he favoured the public a much needed welcome consultation as a playfacility to our town which ground was long-needed for has a growing population the town. and a large number of children who will avail of it. The next step is that if all proposals are approved, arrangements will be made to proceed with the development of the playground, this was according to a Council meeting earlier this month.

Dublin Airport On The Up & UP Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport increased by 15 percent to 11.5 million during the first six months of the year according to DAA. The airport has welcomed over 1.5 million extra passengers so far in the first half of 2015. “Dublin Airport had very strong passenger growth in the first six months of 2015 increasing by over three times the European average. The outlook for the rest of the year remains positive with 2015 on course to be the busiest in the airport’s history,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison. “The growth is due to 22 new routes/ services starting in the

first half of the year as well as additional capacity on a number on existing services,” he said. With over 122 destinations to choose from, passenger traffic to and from continental Europe grew by 16 per cent in the first six

months with almost 5.9 million passengers travelling. UK passenger traffic is up 13 per cent with over 4.2 million passengers flying to and from 25 UK cities in the first six months. Passengers who fly with Ryanair could soon be able to clock up frequent flyer air miles, allowing them to jet off around the world, with British Airways. It’s all part of a concession that IAG has offered the European Commission to enable its takeover of Aer Lingus to go ahead. Ryanair intends to bid for five take-off and landing slots at London’s Gatwick airport that must be relinquished by IAG, in order for its Aer Lingus acquisition to proceed. The European Commission has insisted that any airline that secures control of any of the five slots that are being surrendered by IAG, must be allowed access to IAG’s frequent flyer programme called Avios, if the new entrant does not already have a

But the points on IAG’s frequent flyer programme would only be clocked up by a rival airlines’ passengers on services using one of the five Gatwick slots that will be relinquished. In this case, two of the five Gatwick slots have to be used to operate services between London and Dublin and one between London and Belfast. It raises the prospect of Ryanair passengers being able to redeem Avios air miles, which can then be redeemed to avail of upgrades, free flights, lounge access and other travel-related bonuses for services such as car hire and hotel rooms.

Other international traffic, which includes flights to two destinations in the Middle East and three to African destinations rose by 33 per cent with almost 370,000 passengers flying to and from these locations. “We welcomed six new airlines in the first six months of the year offering greater choice and flexibility for both business and leisure passengers,” Harrison added. There was further good news for the airport, after it was announced that Dublin Airport was one of the fastestgrowing airports in Europe during last May, handling 2.3 million passengers, a 12.9 per cent increase on May 2014. The number of passengers is over 20 per cent higher than in May 2013, Airports Council International (ACI) has confirmed. Dublin Airport has previously noted that 2015 was its busiest May ever in its 75-year history. The airport posted one of the biggest surges in passenger traffic during May among its peer group, which includes European airports that handle between 10 million and 25 million passengers a year.

At just 17, Denis is already making his mark on the competitive world of boxing, but it runs in the family, as Denis’ grandfather was also a boxer. “It’s brilliant for Denis as well of course,”

he added. Depending on Denis’ performance in Germany, he may be in line to travel to the European competitions in October. Both members will be extremely busy in the run up to their competitions. Chloe will train during the week at Bracken Boxing Club and will be in training camps over the weekends, while Denis has just entered a month long training camp in the high performance gym at the National Stadium in preparation for his event. Congratulations to both members on their fantastic achievements, we’ve no doubt they’ll do themselves and their local club proud.

Glasnevin Trust, Ireland’s largest provider of funeral services, has announced that a new state-of-the-art crematorium will be built at their Dardistown Cemetery site in Cloghran. Construction of the new crematorium will begin this month and is due for completion by the summer of 2016. The site area for the crematorium extends to approximately 613 sqm and will cost €5 million to build. The crematorium will be a non-denominational facility, which will offer an alternative to traditional burials in Ireland. The new crematorium meets the highest standards of emissions

control and will be one of the most environmentally friendly crematoria in the country. The public area of the building will be separated into two congregation spaces, each holding 150 people. In the event of a larger service the two congregation spaces can be merged into one, accommodating up to 300 people. The congregation space will be designed as an open transparent glazed space, surrounded by a colonnade of steel columns supporting the deep overhang of the roof. The space is covered with a zinc clad fan shaped roof rising from the south entrance façade to the height of

the chimney at the north end of the building. The crematorium and functional areas are enclosed by a high wall of weathered limestone. The building is set in a grove of trees and high quality exterior lighting and finishes are proposed. Commenting on the announcement, CEO of the Glasnevin Trust, George McCullough said, “Once open, Dardistown crematorium will operate six days a week, providing a much needed service for the greater North Dublin area, as well as Louth Meath and Cavan. The new crematorium will offer a peaceful and tranquil environment for people to visit and pay their respects to their loved ones,” he said. “All of the Glasnevin Trust cemeteries are non-denominational in keeping with our mission to bury and cremate people of all religions and no religion with dignity and respect.” . The new D a r d i s t o w n Crematorium is another development in the illustrious history of the Glasnevin Trust. Dardistown Cemetery is located on the Swords Road (R132), at the junction of the Old Airport Road just before the entrance to Dublin Airport.

A True Taste Of Italy

A new Italian restaurant has just opened in Swords that will provide even more choice for diners in Swords and surrounding areas, adding to the impressive choice of restaurants in the town. Empoli Italian restaurant opened last month at Unit 24 The Plaza, which is located on the first floor. Proprietor, Amar Benkaci is proud to have opened the only Italian restaurant in Swords, and he had no hesitation in choosing Swords as the location for his restaurant. He told the County Leader, “I chose Swords as the ideal place to set up my

business because the town is filled with friendly people, and is a very vibrant and busy town. People have been very kind to me since I opened last month and business has been brisk in that time,” he said. Amar chose the name of the restaurant after Empoli, a city in Italy. He has a lifelong love of Italian cuisine and hopes to extend this to the people of Swords and the entire North County region. The fact that it is, surprisingly, the only Italian restaurant in Swords is destined to bring a whole new customer base, eager to enjoy some of the most popular cuisine anywhere. Empoli is

open for lunch and they have an extensive dinner menu, which is sure to be a winner with local diners. In congratulating Amar on opening his new restaurant, Tony Lambert, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber said, “The opening of the Empoli Restaurant in Swords Plaza is great news for lovers of Italian food and is also great news for Swords, with yet another restaurant offering lovely food at really good prices. Empoli adds to the attraction of Swords town as a place to enjoy a wide range of traditional tastes from around the world.”

Sewage Protest Meeting In Rush A protest meeting about the sewage problem on Rush beach was held last Tuesday evening, ahead of a major march which took place in the town last Saturday. The meeting was called by local councillor, Barry Martin (PBP) and was held in Rush Community Centre before a large gathering of concerned residents. Cllr Martin spoke to the County Leader about concerns about the sewage problem. “Last Wednesday

we held a meeting about the sewage being pumped offshore in Rush and we agreed to set up a grassroots campaign to put political pressure on the County Council and Irish Water to get the project completed to connect Rush to the Portrane Wastewater Treatment plant. People are understandably outraged by the situation and it’s positive in that people want to take action and I believe that people power will

Blow For Swords Men’s Sheds Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has expressed his disappointment that planning permission for a Men’s Shed on Seatown Road has been rejected. “As this is an older, more established part of Swords, a Men’s Shed at this location would have been perfect,” Butler told the County Leader. Mens’ Sheds have really taken off in the last year, and groups now exist all over the North County, in Balbriggan, Rush and Swords, for example. The groups are great for teaching people new skills, providing those with time on their hands with something to do and great for men socially and their wellbeing and mental health. A Swords Mens’ Sheds group, which has been operational since February 2014, already exists in the Riasc Centre in Kinsealy, but this latest

This was supposed to have been sorted out years ago. One of the lads sent off a video of one of the pipes bubbling out of the water, but still nothing was done about it. All we want is to keep the pressure on the County Council or Irish Water, whoever is respon-

planning application for another group base indicates that the group is growing in number and popularity around Swords. The current mens’ shed in Swords, is a dedicated, friendly and welcoming meeting place, where men come together and undertake a variety of mutually agreed activities. There are 28 members at present and they share their skills and knowledge, learn new skills and take ownership of projects they have undertaken. The group meets every Monday and Wednesday between 10am and 4pm. The principle of the mens’ sheds movement is that the men themselves decide on the direction their particular shed operates. “I fully understand the Planner’s Decision, as the Parochial House is a protected structure and we have to allow a buffer space around it, however hopefully something can be worked out and a new application taking this into account can be submitted,” Butler added.

Water Safety Week In Skerries Skerries Water Safety Week will take place 2nd to 8th August around the town and all are encouraged to attend. If you still have registration forms, they must be returned to Skerries Community Centre.

Lusk Church Choir Lusk Church Choir are looking for new members. If you enjoy singing why not come along to their weekly Monday night choir practice in the Church at 8.20 pm.

Skerries Harbour To Receive Funding “Skerries Harbour is to receive €112,500 in funding under the 2015 Fishery Harbours Capital Investment Programme,” according to local TD, Alan Farrell (FG). “I am delighted that as part of this funding, the County Council is to receive €112,500 in funding to carry out underwater repairs to sheet piles and repairs to the outer harbour wall at Skerries Harbour,” Farrell explained. “This investment in the repair and upkeep of Skerries Harbour is essential in order to ensure its sustainability into the future. It is great to see this funding being allocated for necessary works on our local harbours, following the allocation of €112,500 for the upkeep of Balbriggan harbour last month,” he added. “A total of €1.1 million has been allocated for Local Authority Harbour projects and it is great news for the local community that Skerries harbour is one of the 17 projects to benefit from investment under this programme. Our fishing, marine and tourism industries depend greatly on our harbour infrastructure and harbours throughout the North County are considered to be focal points of our local landscape by members of our seaside communities. “Our fisheries sector is integral to that economic recovery in the North

sible, to sort this out,” he said. Eamonn Price from Rush Community Council said, “We have been given a completion date of 2018 for this, but that isn’t good enough. We want our summers back here in Rush, where locals and tourists can bathe in safety. We need the contractor to do not just one, but several different phases to save time, to bring the completion date forward to at least 2017. Without this, we won’t have Blue Flags in Rush, Loughshinny or Skerries due to tidal flow,” he concluded.

Later in the evening, there was a celebration through music, song and exhibitions of photo and video memorabilia in St Patrick’s Hall. The event was a great success and the village was a hive of activity as members of the Community Council, Tidy Towns and representatives from all the sporting groups around the locality got together to show off all the wonderful amenities that Ballyboughal has to offer.

Two years ago, local senator, Darragh O’Brien was being touted in many circles as the next leader of Fianna Fail. This was a widely held view among local political insiders, who viewed the Malahide based senator as genuine leadership mateial. However in a recent Senetor O’ Brien release by Boylesports bookies, O’Brien has slipped in the betting stakes to succeed Micheál Martin as the new leader. He is priced by the bookies as no more than a 16/1 chance. Michael McGrath heads the betting at 5/2 With speculation mounting that an election looks like it’s going to be sooner rather than later, another major mover in the leadership stakes is Westmeath TD, Robert Troy, who is at 12/1 on the back of a large bet having been placed on him to win. Perhaps a bit of speculation on O’Brien could bring him back into the race, as the runners and riders approach the final bend. Other contenders include TDs, Dara Calleary, John McGuinness, Éamon Ó’Cuív, Niall Collins and another senator, Thomas Byrne.

Jan 20 - Feb 18

It’s easy to say that letting go of the past is a prelude to a wonderful future. But relinquishing elements of your life that are as reassuring as they’re familiar is quite another matter. Signs indicate not to do anything drastic.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

A rewarding week when dealing with personal relationships, when intriguing developments force you into action. In fact, you’ll enjoy dealing with these issues so much that you wonder why you delayed for so long.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

Once you begin to discuss problems openly you realise how willing others are to help you resolve them. In fact, this is what helps you this week to tackle dilemmas that you thought you’d just have to live with.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

The troubles you had last week, especially in the workplace, are about to be completely reversed, as those who thought they’d got away with their misdemeanours discover that they’ll have to pay the piper after all.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

With work-related matters things are about to play into your hands. This so improves your position - and your spirits - that you can well afford to wait until next week, when those around you will finally see things your way.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

This is a week when you begin to revitalise elements of your life that you’d given up on ever being exciting. And, better yet, you realise how unimportant difficult and interfering people are in the scheme of things.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

With all aspects of your life this week, your mood is grim. Complain if you want. Just keep in mind that, by the time next week, with its spectacular planetary activity, is over, you’ll be singing a much happier tune.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Having laboured over decisions involving work, you’re in no mood for change. However, indications are that these decisions are out of your hands - but, the disruption may not be as bad as you first thought.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

Don’t be too disheartened if the week seems slow - as change is coming. So much so, that with the week’s far more agreeable planetary activity, you’re able to move swiftly to take advantage of new prospects on offer.

have some friends around and, weather permitting, have a barbecue. There is nothing quite as appealing as the smell of a barbecue wafting through the air. There are many excellent butchers in

the North County, who can provide you with the finest meat for you and your friends to enjoy. They will also have special deals at this time of year, so it pays off to keep a sharp eye out for these deals. The Bank Holiday is always a good time to pick up bargains in almost all goods. Another coastal activity which is very appealing is sea

angling, with areas like Balbriggan, Loughshinny, Rush, Donabate, Malahide and Portmarnock to the fore here. Always remember to be extra cautious when family members, particularly children

are near water. Our excellent network of roads means that we can access anywhere in a short period of time, so let’s go and explore. Activities like horse riding are always popular, especially with children and if the weather is bad, a visit to your local leisure centre is always very appealing. Here the entire family can enjoy the swimming

pool, gym, badminton and other sports, and have a nice meal afterwards as well. A round of Pitch and Putt or tennis are also something that the entire family can enjoy together.

If you wish to spread your wings a little, a visit to Dublin city is well worthwhile. We

have a very interesting capital city with lots of places to visit. For adults, a visit here is memorable, with many of the finest pubs and restaurants to enjoy. World famous attractions such as Trinity College and the world famous Book of Kells are a real treat, as well as a visit to Jameson Distillery or Guinness are highly recommended. Dublin City Bus tours are highly recommended, where you can relax and enjoy and enjoy an informative commentary. There is also an opportunity to explore our neighbouring counties around Dublin, which have so much to offer and many attractions for the entire family. A Job Well Done

Daniel de Jong and his wife, Priya live in a beautiful, recently constructed house at Seatown Villas in Swords. They bought the house, which was built only 10 years ago and then decided to extend it. The main problem was the large garden, which was in a very overgrown and neglected state.

Daniel spoke about the main problem which the garden presented. "When we bought the house first, there was a huge hedge in front and it was growing over the pathway and many people complained about it. I decided to extend the house and when the builder was finished with it, a lot of waste was left behind, with piles of dirt, bricks and other building debris." "It was then that I needed a landscaper to sort out the garden. I contacted a number of landscaping companies, who gave me quotes, whilst others didn't even bother to turn up. One person came without doing any proper examination of the ground and just plucked a figure of out of thin air, promising to tarmacadam here and concrete there, and I thought this was not for us. I wanted something nice and colourful and sustainable," said Daniel. "Around this time I saw a big article in the County Leader about Virgoe McEnery, so I approached them to see what they would come up with. Michael McEnery came by and he was a very nice, open person who was a pleasure to deal with. He returned with a quote which was acceptable. Michael was on time and his team of four workers worked brilliantly together, and the synergy between them and their passion for gardening was very evident. I got great suggestions from them in regards to the colour of the tiles, to the colour of the bricks to choose for the retaining wall and it worked out brilliantly. Even small pieces of work that the builder had forgotten, like the sewer pipes that were not really flowing down towards the drain. They fixed it without any hassle," he said. "The workers were spotlessly clean and even though there was a little more waste than at first anticipated, they tidied up without question. This was a very challenging job for Michael and his team, but as Michael said that he loves a challenge, it worked our great." "There’s no doubt that Virgoe McEnery gave great value for money and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who needs a great job done on their garden," concluded Daniel.”

lively room in the house, filled with family members, so decorate your living room to reflect this. There’s no longer a need for those thick, woolly blankets on couches, it you tend to use one for comfort, replace the blanket with a nice, pastel coloured throw. Decorate the room with colourful ornaments adding a summery pop of colour. Candles are key to making houses feel like a home. Buy or replace some candles with some subtly sweet ones, similar to summer fruits. There’s nothing more relaxing and homely, than a candlelit room and subtle lighting. Colourful candles are a great way to add colour, and comfort also. However, be sure to balance out the colour carefully, with the theme of your house. If it is prominently traditional, pastel coloured candles and ornaments will suit better, If however, your living room has a minimalist look, sticking to mainly shaded colours, you may get away with bright, bold colours which add character and dimension to your house this summer. A lick of paint can give your house a whole new, fresh look. Perhaps you just want to add another coat to the current colour, or go for a new look and change it completely. Now that the Summer’s here, it’s all about the light colours. Maybe a nice versatile colour for all seasons would suit, like pastel colours. For the bathroom, replace the bath mats and towels with lighter colours. A light scented candle always looks calming and relaxing when lit. Try a fresh scented one, similar to vanilla or sea breeze, these light scents always add to the tone.

Perhaps now is the time to try some new bathroom products. Now it’s summer, everything comes to life, including scents, embrace this by opting for a different body wash, perhaps a scented one. Get your garden summer friendly. Freshen the look of your garden, just by simply pulling out a few weeds from the paving and flower beds. Unfortunately, in the summer, the lawn can becomes high maintenance, needing a trim every two weeks. However, it is a good excuse to spend some time out in the sun. Sprinkle some grass seeds onto the lawn, this will layer it with a fresh coat, making the lawn look a whole lot healthier. Take this time to decide if your lawn requires levelling, and for other big garden projects, you may need some professional local landscapers. If there are only small areas that need levelling, you may be able to just use sand, and allow the lawn time to grow through. It’s not too late to start planting some flower bulbs. The North County has lovely garden centres where the staff will be more than happy to share their expertise on flower suggestions and care. You may decide you want to plant your flowers this summer, so they are ready to bloom next year. Trees and shrubs

are good, all year round plants. They still add life to your garden, and are relatively low maintenance. Dress the trees in decorative, clay pots, these will make a great statement piece in your garden. Have fun re-decorating or changing your home and garden around slightly. Ensure it is a space that reflects you and your family to enjoy this summer.

Local Attractions Are Among Top Tourist Sites Malahide Castle and Gardens and Skerries Mills are two local attractions that have made it onto the list of Ireland’s top 45 tourist sites, composed by Failte Ireland. Malahide Castle is the region’s highest performing attraction, making it to number 33 on the list while Skerries Mills came in just two places below that as the 35th most popular visitor attractions in Ireland. Malahide Castle and Gardens welcomed 117.109 visitors last year while Skerries Mills welcomed 105,876 visitors through its doors. Over the last few years, this Government has invested significantly in new and existing attractions and is committed to ensuring our attractions remain relevant and attractive to the visitors arriving to our shores.” Shaun Quinn, CEO Fáilte Ireland added: “Tourism is on track to enjoy what could be a record year in terms of activity and visitors in 2015. With that in mind, we would expect the attendance numbers for most attractions to rise even further.” Top of the list was the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin City which welcomed 1.2 million visitors last year.

UK, Not The Place For A Bee Last week saw the UK By Cathal Boland Government temporarily lift the restriction of the use of neonicotinoid pesticide to control the oil seed rape crops from attack from the cabbage team fly. The EU has in place a ban on the use of these pesticides as they are deemed harmful to the bee population. The National Union of Farmers lobbied for the temporary lifting of this ban to allow for its use on about 5 per cent of the total crop area. The question this poses is, should a national government be permitted to bypass such EU policy, having account of the acknowledged importance role of the bee. It further brings into focus the issue of how effective controls may be on the use of GM crops, should member states see home advantage in permitting their use. Meanwhile Dublin MEP, Brian Hayes held out the prospect of Dublin becoming the third Heathrow runway. Calling for Dublin Airport to make a pitch to IAG to make Dublin the hub for their transatlantic flights, he noted that “Heathrow is seriously overcrowded and there is massive controversy and opposition to plans for a third

21 Years Serving The Community Of North County Dublin runway. It will be at least ten or fifteen years before a third runway could become operational, if ever.” He continued, “An increased frequency of transatlantic flights from Dublin airport will attract more passengers and airlines to use Dublin Airport. This has already Writes Cathal Boland begun to happen. The new Aer Lingus/IAG alliance has the potential to transform not just Aer Lingus, but Dublin Airport as well,” As the EU, US and China sign an agreement to reduce tariffs on high-tech products, in one of the largest trade agreements made at the World Trade Organisations in recent decades, David Cameron called for Britain to become the most open trade minded exporter in the world. He encouraged manufactures to look at the untapped potential within the Commonwealth and beyond. He also said, “The EU must do more, too. That is why I’ve put competitiveness and cutting European regulations right at the heart of my plan to renegotiate our relationship with Europe.”

Submissions Open For Reduced Speed Limit Scheme During March this year, the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport published Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits. These guidelines confirmed the advice to local Authorities to consider 30km/hr speed limits particularly where there are vulnerable road users on housing estate roads and local residential roads with no strategic or distributor function. A key objective of the guidelines is to reduce vehicle speeds in housing estates in order to improve road safety for all road

users, particularly children. The following estates have been included in proposals for a pilot 30kph reduced speed limit: Boroimhe Estate, Ridgewood Estate and St. Cronan’s Avenue all in Swords, The Chantries / Ardgillan Estates, Balrothery, Tayleurs Point Estate, Rush, Dun Emer Estate, Lus and Holywell Estate, Swords (Howth-Malahide election area). These proposals are now out on display and members of the public can make submission up to 4.30pm on Friday 28th

August. Any person may submit observations, comments or objections to the Draft Bye-Laws in writing or by email to: roads@fingal.ie. “Councillors will make their decision later in the year regarding these proposals. Where possible, limited funding will be put in place to provide speed reduction measures in estates which were recommended as suitable for the pilot scheme but which have insufficient traffic calming,” explained local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF).

Dogs Trust Urges Care For Dogs This Summer Dogs Trust and AA Ireland has warned those in the North County against leaving dogs in hot cars this summer. With what appears to be the arrival of the Irish summer and temperatures set to rise, Dogs Trust are asking dog owners across the country to be vigilant when it comes to travelling with your dog. Speaking about the safety risks of travelling with dogs, Catriona Bentley from Dogs Trust Ireland said “More and more hotels in Ireland are dog friendly these days so increasingly we’re seeing owners take their dogs away with them on domestic holidays, which often means long drives up and down the country particularly during the summer season.” If your dog shows signs of distress such as excessive panting, blueness of the tongue or collapse in the heat, contact your

28.07.2015

vet. If you are present at the rescue of a dog from a hot car that is clearly in distress, seek immediate veterinary advice. Dampening the dog down with cool (but not freezing) water or cool wet towels will help to start bring down their body temperature. Meanwhile, Dogs Trust, have also expressed concern over the large number of dogs still entering pounds across Ireland, including the North County. Statistics released for 2014 revealed that over 14,000 dogs entered Irish pounds during 2014. This represents just a six per cent reduction since 2013. The statistics also reveal that almost 3,000 dogs were destroyed in Irish pounds in 2014, representing eight dogs a day. Dogs Trust has been actively working with pounds across Ireland in order to rehabilitate stray and abandoned dogs and re-home them. If you are considering getting a dog, why not give a stray or abandoned dog a second chance of love and of life.

More Energy Efficiency For North County Local TD Alan Farrell (FG), has welcomed the recent announcement of €664,093 in funding for energy efficiency projects off Kettles Lane, Feltrim and Rivervalley, Swords. The North County is to benefit from €250,693 in energy efficiency funding in 2015. The Better Energy Communities scheme is designed to improve energy efficiency in public buildings, businesses, sports clubs and homes, according to Farrell. “SSE Airtricity are partnering with the County Council to

provide substantial energy upgrades to 108 apartments and duplex homes off Kettles Lane, Feltrim. This project will provide deep energy efficiency retrofit upgrades to these properties. Such upgrades will include heating upgrades, and cavity and loft insulation. Furthermore, this funding will also provide for delivery of a major energy efficient lighting upgrade to Rivervalley Community Centre,” he said. “The allocation of this funding is important in terms of promoting energy conservation and I am pleased to see that

this is an issue which the Government is taking seriously. Our public buildings should be leading the way on energy efficiency, but it is also up to all of us in society to conserve energy and mitigate against the effects of climate change,” Farrell continued. “The funding for community energy efficiency projects coincides with the Government appointing Ireland’s First Advisory Council on Climate Change. The group, to be chaired by Professor John FitzGerald of the ESRI, will comprise of eleven members to advise Government Departments and agencies on the actions required to significantly decarbonise the Irish economy by 2050,” he concluded.

Nasty Shock For Motorists Many North County motorists, who drive cars over 15 years old, may experience a sting in the tail when they go to insure their cars, if they are first time customers. The news that two of the country’s biggest motor insurers are refusing to provide cover to new customers driving cars 15 years or older, even if they hold a valid NCT certificate, will hit local motorists hard. The insurers claimed these cars tended to be involved in more collisions, were used in fraud cases, had bald tyres and were poorly maintained. The exclusion only applies to new customers, the companies said, adding that existing clients whose cars had passed the threshold would continue to get insurance cover. The County Leader spoke to Michael

Kennedy of Michael Kennedy Insurance in Swords, and he said, “The companies are

to repair such cars.” When asked if he thought this was fair to customers, Kennedy said, “I think this is unfair to motorists and these companies are engaged in cherry picking their customers. They

looking at this from a cost point of view, where the settlement of claims is uneconomical for them. In such an instance, people particularly older people become attached to their cars and don’t want to replace them, just to have them repaired. However the insurance companies don’t want the costs

want them when they’re young and don’t want them when they get older. This applies to both people and cars and they just want the cream of the crop,” he said. “There are many cars out there that are over 15 years old that are in great condition and it’s just a matter of

economics,” he said. “We just checked quotes from various insurance companies for a 00 registration and also for a 98 registration. We found that up to nine companies provided quotes for 00 registrations, but only 4 or 5 provided quotes for 98 registration. Our job is to shop around and get the best quotes for our customers,” he said. This decision will adversely affect many people who are starting to drive and cannot afford a newer car, as well as people with families and people where a second car is required. The fact that these cars have passed the NCT and are deemed perfectly safe, makes this decision absurd. The advice is to check which companies will provide a quote for a car over 15 years old before you buy. The Department of Transport added that the decision was “regrettable” but noted that there were 30 companies on the market offering cover.

Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for a very special one (mention request). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it with your broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Say for 3 days, promise publication . Never known to fail. (A. B)

The ‘Purrfect’ Holiday Home For Your Feline Friend Lissenhall Kennels Ltd, which is located just outside of Swords has just made a significant advancement in its cat care facility, with the introduction of 16 new cat condominiums (condos). The newly enhanced cattery looks after the needs of cats, and the acquisition of this specially designed and exclusive cat only boarding facility is set to be of great benefit to cat owners all over the North County and beyond. The cattery, which is part of Lissenhall Kennels Ltd, is situated half a kilometre from exit 4 on the M1 Motorway, just outside Swords and a mere five minute drive from Dublin airport. It has a proud tradition of providing excellent cat care since its establishment 30 years ago in 1985. Denis O’Shea and Gary Cregan are the joint proprietors of Lissenhall Kennels Ltd and Denis is delighted to introduce the enhanced Lissenhall cattery to his many clients. He is certain that the new cattery will make a significant difference to his already excellent cat care reputation. He gave great reassurance to cat owners, who may be contemplating going on holidays and need somewhere to board their cats. There is even underfloor heating here, to provide extra comfort for your cat. Denis said, “We have veterinary supervision on site, where experienced staff are ready to cope with any medical requirements or ongoing treatments that need to be carried out. We also have a large exercise room, complete with equipment, to stimulate and entertain your cat. These amount to patented Shor-Line cat condos, allowing the

hygiene standards and providing premium nutrition and the ability to provide specific dietary requirements, which puts Lissenhall Cattery at the peak of top class cat care," he said. The new cattery has 16 units and an extensive play and exercise area, where cats can climb and explore. "Cats take turns at using the exercise area, and they use it on their own, unless they are part of the same family. They are then rotated back into their own condo after about 30 to 45 minutes. The condos are interconnectable, meaning that if you wish to

mix families, you can just pull out the dividing flap. At quiet times, it means that one cat can have access to three or four condos." "July and August are the peak times here at the

cattery, with families heading off on summer holidays, with not so many cats here at offpeak times. The exercise area has climbing facilities as well as toys and shelves where cats can perch and just watch the world go by. The girls working here come down regularly to play with them, groom them and provide them with the stimulation they need," said Denis. The cattery at Lissenhall Kennels, the first one in the area with condos, is a wonderful, secure location for any cat owners, who wish to have peace of mind, as they enjoy their family holiday. Remember that this is as much a holiday for your cat as it is for

you. Cats enjoy the best of nutrition and care, while they enjoy their stay at the new cattery, which is one of the largest in the surrounding area. The typical stay for cats is from a week to ten days, with a long stay being three to

four weeks. “We also do overnights and long weekends, whatever the client requires," said Denis. Sometimes people will use our cattery if they are moving home, where there is no room to house the cat. They come down regularly to visit their cats in such situations. This wonderful new facility adds a new dimension to an already excellent facility provided by Denis and the team at Lissenhall Kennels and is sure to be a great success.
