Dublin Airport will have 850,000 extra seats available this summer, a five per cent increase in capacity compared to last year. A total of 15 new services, comprising 12 shorthaul routes to continental Europe and new long-haul routes to San Francisco, Toronto and St. John’s, Newfoundland will begin in the coming weeks. Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison, told the County Leader that this summer is set to be the busiest since passenger numbers reached their peak in 2008. “There’s an exciting range of new destinations to choose from this summer at Dublin Airport,” he said. “The significant increase in seat capacity and frequency provides our customers

with greater flexibility, whether travelling for business or leisure purposes,” he added. This summer will also see a significant increase in connectivity between Ireland and Canada with additional service to Toronto and a new route to St John’s Newfoundland. Starting this month, Aer Lingus will begin non-stop flights between Dublin and Toronto, seven times per week with a Boeing 757 aircraft. WestJet will also start daily service on 15th June with Boeing 737-700 from St. John’s to Dublin, with connecting service from several other Canadian destinations. “With strong historical connections between

Newfoundland and Ireland we expect this to be a very popular destination across the summer for both Irish and Canadian visitors,” he continued. Capacity on European routes is set to increase by four per cent with 520,000 more seats available this summer compared to last year. There will also be a significant expansion in capacity to the Middle East during the summer season. Extra capacity will also be added to many existing services such as United Airways to Newark, Munich and Düsseldorf with Lufthansa, CityJet to London City and Bucharest with Tarom, along with significant frequency increases to Aer Lingus and Ryanair’s flight schedules. This summer, 59 airlines will fly to over 180 destinations from Dublin Airport.

08.04.2014 A mysterious photograph made its way into the County Leader offices last week, and we are looking for its owner to come forward and claim the picture. This wonderful family photograph was brought into us by James Cooney, and was found by his wife Claire, in a photo frame she had purchased in the St. Vincent de Paul charity shop in Swords. Claire explained how she came across the picture: “I had originally purchased the frame because it contained a separate Chinese photo, which I was really drawn to,” she explained to the County Leader. “It was only when I got home and went to remove the picture from the frame, that I discovered the family photograph - hidden completely behind the Chinese picture! So, it probably went into the frame completely unnoticed,” she said. “It’s a wonderful photo that contains a lot of happy memories for somebody, so we want to see that they get it back,” Claire continued. If you own the photograph, or know of anyone that does, please contact the County Leader.

Newman Calls For Solution To School Problem The capacity problem at Holy Family Junior National School in River Valley, Swords is set to force new pupils to seek alternative schooling arrangements in September. However, Independent local election candidate, Joe Newman, told the County Leader, that a solution to this problem can be achieved locally, thus preventing young children from leaving their area in search of a school. Newman said, “The problem arose because of the volume of junior infants in the area, who have made application to attend the school in September, and the refusal of the Department of Education and Skills to sanction a further classroom, which would solve the problem. The upcoming Women’s Mini Marathon offers a wonderful opportunity for local women around the North County to get fit and give something back to the countless fantastic charities around the North County and all of Ireland, who are so in need of extra funds and a helping hand, to ensure they can keep going. Recently the premise behind donating to charity has caught some negative attention, but we should not forget how much great, tireless work that goes on in these charities, who are for the most part, simply trying to do their bit for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. It’s really so vital that women come on board,

as these charities rely on the good will of the public in order to survive as more often than not, government funding is just not sufficient, and some charities may or may not get some of this funding, so they rely more than ever on the goodwill of others. With this in mind, what better way to get involved in fundraising than participating in the biggest charity event of the year, the Women’s Flora Mini Marathon. This 10k women’s race is the most significant charity event of the year, and grows in popularity and support year in, year out. This major event is so very important as without it, some outstanding charities would struggle to provide their services

to those who need it the most. So, don’t wait around, apply today and become a part of this fantastic event, all while knowing you’re doing your bit for a good cause. Taking place on the 2nd of June this year, the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest event of it’s kind, with thousands of women taking to the streets around the North County and beyond, on Bank Holiday Monday to help raise funds for many super charities around the North County and throughout Ireland. For those that don’t know, here is some history behind what started it all. The event started in 1983 and has since had 780,000 women enter, now making it the biggest single day event in the country. Not only do participating women benefit health wise, but they will also help raise a remarkable amount of money for their chosen charities. It is estimated that in 2013, thanks to all those women taking part in the event, an unbelievable €12m was raised, bringing the total since the race started up to €137m. It really is an amazing event which can help many charities continue on with the sterling work they are doing. It would be fantastic to raise the same amount or higher this year, so ladies,

why not get involved in 2014? Pick a charity, enlist the support of your friends and family and provide your cause with the funds they so desperately need. If you’re unsure about where your raised funds will go, check if the charity is officially registered. You may decide to support a local charity that is not registered, but you know the people involved and that may be a great choice for you. If in doubt, check the registration number. Many women will have no charity in mind when applying to participate in the Flora women’s marathon, and some may be surprised at just how many are looking for that bit of extra help. You may be extremely keen to be a part of the event, but may be struggle to choose the right charity to raise money for, but don’t worry, this is where we can help you out. The North County has many prominent charities, which will benefit immensely from your donations, big or small. These charities offer so many excellent services in the North County but can only remain afloat thanks your help. So, once you’ve applied to take part in this year’s marathon, take a look at some of the charities on this page and contact your chosen one as soon as you can.

Many charities will need you to register with them as early as possible in order for you to donate once you have completed the race, so making contact with them sooner rather than later is a great idea. Contact details can be found on this page, so you can contact any of them for more information. The day can be a fantastic day out for everyone. Many women taking part don brilliant fancy dress outfits, or a wacky mask to wear while running (or walking!), making for quite the sight as they all pass through the streets of Dublin city centre. So if you have applied to participate in this year’s event, suggest to your running partners a

group fancy dress idea to give your friends and family on the sidelines a good laugh as you run by them. It is also very common for women to label themselves with their chosen charity. Be sure to do this as well, so onlookers know exactly what cause you’re running for. Some charities may have a campaign or drive that may interest you. If you want to find out about campaigns that charities are running, simply ring them and ask! If you like them then you can support something that is motivating to you to raise money. So go on, get your running or walking shoes on and sign up and take part in the mini marathon today!

No More Painting & Repairing That Fence Every Year Walls The first thing people look at when entering a home, is the point most obvious to eye level, this would be of course, the walls. Playing perhaps the biggest part in any home to accentuate warmth, or to cool the internal temperature from accentuating brightness to portraying a love of nature and the wilderness, the four walls of our humble abodes are providing the most infinite of possibilities for decorative endeavours. Everyone knows about the paint mixing desk in any local and major DIY shop which opens up a further range of colourful possibilities.

Carpets Over the years, DIY has entered into the realm near to convenience as one can get; Laminate flooring has proven popular when desiring the wood effect which is both a alternative cheaper to hardwood and easier to

assemble. The finished effect can be highly aesthetic, but high heels are still a no no. Carpets are another set of rules altogether, limitless in choice of colour and

style, thickness and patterns, carpeting remains the ever traditional flooring option. There’s something quite fulfilling in watching the kids play with their toy cars exploiting the pattern of the carpet to imaginative effect. The great aspect that remains about carpeting is that carpets can do so much to reflect a person’s persona. Carpets can accentuate a naturally lightened room or brighten up a child’s bedroom providing bright primary colours or complex patterns for the living room.

Garden Fencing & Decking The glory and versatility of wood to create a superior natural looking garden can be

found when constructing fencing, decking, lining, panels, etc. All shapes and colours used go to providing the specific mix of timber and wood for that outdoor aspect of house and home to enjoy the summer months to their fullest. Millbank Theatre Presents Don Baker Well known musician, Don Baker will be appearing at the Millbank Theatre in Rush on 27th April at 8pm sharp. This gig is expected to sell out quickly, as Don, a noted harmonica player, is one of the most exciting performers in the country. He became a significant Irish musical figure in 1979 when he was invited by the Late Late Show to compose a song about inner city Dublin. ‘Dublin’s Inner City’ was the outcome, and the version by The Jolly Beggarmen reached No. 2 in

the Irish charts. Over the years since then, Baker has built a solid reputation as a singer, guitarist, harmonica player and songwriter. Many of his own compositions offer disarmingly honest reflections on aspects of his own life and personality, and he has openly spoken of his deeply spiritual approach to life and people. He has recorded several acclaimed albums, including Almost Illegal, Born With the Blues, Duckin’ & Divin’, Miss You, No Regrets Live in Concert, Born With the Blues, Just Don Baker, No Nonsense and Rain On The Wind. His DVD/video releases include Don Baker Live and Don Baker In Profile.

Balbriggan Club Stages Strictly Event It seems that Strictly Come Dancing fever has well and truly been caught around the North County! After previous Strictly’ events recently taking place in Swords, Balbriggan Golf Club will now stage their own version of Strictly Come Dancing to be held on April 19th. The idea was born simply enough - one

member Deirdre Foran had attended a Strictly event and thought it would be a great idea to try and organise a Strictly Come Dancing event for the club - so the committee was formed. Deirdre Foran, Barbara Kenny Collette Guildea, Rachael Colfer and Frances Whelan are the Strictly Come Dancing

Committee and a lot of hard work has been carried out. They currently have 12 men and 12 ladies all giving their time and energy in full training for the event, and a great mix of dancers across the board, including a husband and wife couple, father and son, both 2014 club captains, past captains

The members will be on hand from 10:30am until 4:30pm, and they will be providing bowls and advice to everyone who wishes to try their skill at bowls. Skerries Bowling Club has been in existence since 1983 and provides a wonderful facility right in the middle of the town, with plenty of parking close by. The members play the game the whole year round, as they were the first club in the Dublin area to invest in an artificial all weather surface. So, if you have ever wondered what was going on behind the large green hedge that surrounds their playing surface, this upcoming “Open Day” is your chance to come and find out, and be assured that you will find a wonderful welcome there. and club members all dancing in the event. The dancers are working hard practising a couple of nights per week at the moment. Tickets may be purchased from any of the committee or by contacting the club.

Local Support For Rejection Of Directly Elected Mayor There has been overwhelming support for the decision of our councillors, to reject the proposed directly elected mayor, with the political and business community coming out in support of the decision. The vote at last Monday week’s council meeting was 16 against, six in favour and two abstaining. Councillor Darragh Butler was one of two councillors who abstained and he told the County Leader, why he adopted this stance, which many people believe he should have voted no instead. “The reason I abstained was that I did not want to vote against a plebiscite taking

Council Assumes Maintenance Of Moylaragh

The County Council has finally taken over maintenance of public areas in Moylaragh in Balbriggan: For the past number of years, the public areas here have been largely neglected, with the grass growing out of control and the children’s playground being vandalised on a regular basis. This was caused by the fact that most of the developers involved were, either

By Martin McCurdy in receivership or in NAMA, with no funds available to look after the much needed maintenance of the area. As a result of this, the Count Council were not able to take responsibility for the maintenance, and for the past three years, the grass has only been cut once per year through an arrangement with the local authority and some local farmers

He told the County Leader, “Due to council rules, I was only able to put forward a motion to resolve the issue once every six months, but I am now delighted that it has finally passed and the council has commenced grass cutting. Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly has marked the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the workplace smoking ban in Ireland. Since 29th March 2004, smoking is prohibited in most enclosed workplaces under the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2002. “The workplace smoking ban in 2004 was a ground breaking initiative, and it has had a huge impact” the Minister told the County Leader. “Recent research found 3, 726 fewer smoking related deaths than would have been expected if the smoking ban had not been brought in. This is indisputable Reilly TD evidence that the ban is saving lives, and improving our overall health as a nation.” The Minister noted that the cumulative effect of Ireland’s tobacco control legislation to date has been a decrease in the number of people smoking. “The North County and Ireland have a strong track record in the area of tobacco control policy, and we are actively engaged in building on past successes,” he told the County Leader. “ We are also working towards introducing legislation to prohibit smoking in cars where children are present.” He said that the North County and Ireland have made good progress on tobacco control policy to date, and reaffirmed his commitment to continue tackling the issue, saying:

County Council told the County Leader that, “Moylaragh is now on the regular m a i n t e n a n c e schedule of the

council and will be inspected on a weekly basis, with the council assuming full responsibility for its upkeep.”

“Tobacco consumption is the largest avoidable health threat in the country; one in two smokers will die from a tobacco related disease. My priority is to reduce the consumption of tobacco across the board, to meet our policy target of making the country tobacco free by 2025,” concluded Reilly.
