Rush Credit Union Rescued Progressive Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in North Dublin, has confirmed that it has been “inundated” with requests for membership from former members of Rush Credit Union. Rush Credit Union ceased trading on Tuesday and is currently under the supervision of a High Court appointed liquidator. At their AGM on Wednesday 9th November, they got approval from their members for a rule change which would enable the extension of the “Common Bond” to include the parishes of Rush and Lusk and the surrounding regions. A spokesperson confirmed, “Progressive Credit Union (PCU) is proud to announce that, as part of our AGM 2016 discussions on the 9th

By Patrick Finnegan of November 2016, our board of directors staff and our members approved the motion to extend our common bond to cover the parishes of Rush and Lusk.” The statement continued, “we understand that all Credit Unions are more than just an office or business in local parishes, playing an important role within communities, both financially and socially. The credit union has always been about the people and its members and approval of this motion by our members, gives others the opportunity to remain part of the Credit Union and avail of its services through membership of PCU.” “Over the last number of years, PCU has experienced continued growth

with a branch network consisting of the former Balbriggan, Baldoyle – Portmarnock, Donabate, Glasnevin, Skerries and Swords Rivervalley Credit Unions. It has assets of approximately ¤142 million. Over the last financial year, it approved loans to the value of over ¤17 million, with an average loan value of €3,600.” The people of Rush and Lusk are now welcome to join PCU, to avail of all our services and to discuss their financial needs. Once you are a member you can avail of all services both in office and online, offering you more ways to do business,” the statement concluded. In welcoming this development, Rush resident and local senator, James Reilly (FG) told the County Leader, “I welcome this development and it is really important that older people have a safe place to deposit their money. The Credit Union movement has a really important role to play and with the right sort of governance and legislative support, it will have a very expanded and

exciting future in our community here in Rush and Lusk.” He continued, “I wish to commend the Central Bank on moving to

secure the funds and I fully expect those who may have misappropriated funds to be brought to justice. Contd. on page 10

Fingal’s Best Young Entrepreneurs In County Final The search to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) is advancing to the County Final stage, which takes place on Wednesday 30th November in County Hall, Swords and is being organised by Local Enterprise Office Fingal. A total of €50,000 investment fund will be won by six young entre-

preneurs in the county, aged between 18 and 35. IBYE, which has a €2 million investment fund, is run by all 31 Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) and is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Enterprise Ireland. At the upcoming IBYE County Final on

Wednesday 30th November, Local Enterprise Office Fingal has an investment fund of €50,000 to award to six local entrepreneurs across three categories: Best Business Idea, Best Start-Up Business and Best Established Business. Fifteen young entrepreneurs have made it

through to this year’s IBYE County Final and are ready to face the judges. Among the special guests at the awards ceremony will be Minister of State for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen TD, County Mayor, Cllr. Darragh Butler and Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid. The County Finals follow successful bootcamps all over Ireland involving enthusiastic entrepreneurs from a variety of business backgrounds. The competition is now in its third year and Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise with Local Enterprise Office Fingal said that the standard of entries is higher than ever. “The exceptionally high standard of entries will make the competition tough and challenging, but it will also help bring out the full potential of entrants and inspire them to succeed whether they win at the County Final stage or not. We see the IBYE initiative as a springboard for young entrepreneurs here locally, who want to start or expand a business. They will have the support of their Local Enterprise Office all year around,” he said. Paul Reid Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said, “Fingal has the youngest and fastest growing population in

It is essential to Fingal’s continued economic prosperity that job creation and business start-ups continue to be supported and allowed to grow, and this scheme provides a tried and tested channel for young entrepreneurs to succeed.” This year’s county finalists are hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year’s local winners. They were: Best New Idea (winning a €10,000 investment) Cara Sturgess, Loinnir, C a s t l e k n o c k . Return Of KLM To Dublin Airport

Boet Kreiken, Managing Director KLM Cityhopper is pictured with Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison at the launch of KLM's new daily services between Dublin and Amsterdam

Dublin Airport is delighted to welcome the launch of KLM’s new direct service between Dublin and Amsterdam. Initially starting with twice daily flights connecting Dublin to KLM’s award-winning hub Schiphol, the airline will further strengthen this service from March 2017 by doubling capacity on the route. KLM will operate flights with an Embraer 190, carrying up to 100 passengers. The schedule has been devised to complement KLM’s long-haul network, offering passengers easy connections to destinations such as Johannesburg, Havana, Beijing and Hong Kong. Welcoming KLM’s new route, Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said “It’s 50 years since KLM last operated in Ireland and we are delighted to welcome the airline back to Dublin. We are particularly pleased that KLM has already committed to increasing its frequency on the route next year, which is testament to the popularity of this destination and the strong connections that KLM offers from Schiphol.” Boet Kreiken, Managing Director, KLM Cityhopper, said “We are proud to be flying to Ireland’s beautiful capital in KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer 190. The addition of Dublin to KLM’s route network is yet another endorsement of continuous investment to best serve the market. Ireland is experiencing a blossoming economy and strong growth in the tourism sector. Besides the Dublin-Amsterdam route, the direct KLM connection offers access to KLM’s European and intercontinental network – and all at attractive prices, and featuring an excellent flight schedule.”

This year's Granard Cup Finals took place in Corrstown Golf Club. The Granard Cup is run by the National Council for the Blind of Ireland to raise vital funds for people who are blind or have sight loss. There were over 90 clubs taking part on the day of the finals at Corrstown Golf Club. €22,500 was raised this year for The National Council for the Blind. Medieval Banquet In Balrothery A Medieval Banquet was held on Saturday, 5th November in Balrothery Heritage Centre to celebrate Balrothery’s Heritage and as Balrothery translates in Irish to ‘Baile Na Ridire -Town of the Knight.’ it was indeed appropriate that there were Knights ‘a plenty’ in attendance. After the Banquet, the crowd gathered outside to witness the unveiling of a creative public art piece at the historic landmark of Balrothery Castle. The innovative project has seen a dead 200 year old tree, that was condemned to be felled, reborn into a sculpture of the first Baron of Balrothery in 1343 - Richard Constentyn and he now looks over his Barony again from the grounds of Balrothery Castle. Balrothery Community Association commissioned Irish artist, Richie Clarke to create the magnificent piece and this was made possible by kind donations from local people. This project is a key focal point in a wider plan to develop a Heritage Trail in Balrothery which will encapsulate all of Balrothery’s landmark heritage sites on a walking loop through the village. Chairperson of Balrothery Community Association, Kevin Tolan, stated that these were very exciting times for Balrothery. “It is impor-

tant to restore links to our past and ensure it is not forgotten by present day generations. When you couple our recent exploits on rediscovering the ‘Knights of yesteryear’, with the plans for a Recreational Hub in Glebe Park prepared by Fingal County Council, it is suffice to say that the ‘Knights of Tomorrow’ are also going to be provided for in the Barony of Balrothery.”

leader, Micheál Martin said: “This is a wonderful achievement by James, and I am confident he will lead Ógra Fianna Fáil with distinction over his term of office.” “Ógra Fianna Fáil plays an incredibly important role in the life of our party. Many of the current parliamentary party came up through the ranks of Ógra, with the current membership of Ógra providing the impetus for our policy positions in recent years.” The new President of Ógra Fianna Fáil said: “It’s a great honour to be elected president of Ógra

by my peers. I received a strong mandate, winning 63 per cent of the vote. My job is to grow and develop our organisation and ensure that the voice of young people is heard within Fianna Fáil and the country generally.” “I am conscious of the important role that Ógra continues to play in the life of Fianna Fáil. Over the course of the weekend, delegates debated issues such as the needs of rural Ireland resulting from the fallout from Brexit and the need for an increased focus on science and technology in schools,” he said.

Confirmation has been received that daa will be funding an allweather pitch for the Ward River Valley, as part of their discharge of the runway planning conditions relating to compensatory habitats. County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler was delighted with the news that daa have made a commitment to fund an allweather sports facility in River Valley. He told the County Leader, “This is part of the daa compensatory habitat where they will provide an all-weather pitch for River Valley. The exact location will need to be decided on by the County Council and this will have to go through the chamber. This will be located on the airport side and the plan is to make it available to St Finian’s GAA Club and River Valley Rangers FC. This is great news for the River Valley area and it will be a wonderful facility for people in the area and with the Council planning to return to us with a study and masterplan of what to do with the Ward River Valley, we would have been looking for all-weather playing facilities on both sides of the valley, to include Swords Manor. The fact that we’ve got this commitment

up front from the daa is a great boost, now we can focus attention for the same facility for Swords Manor FC, who would benefit from such a facility. With the new Sports Capital Grant to be announced shortly, I would be looking to help as many sports clubs in Swords as possible here. The Ward Valley is a fantastic resource on our doorstep and along with better community and sporting facilities on both sides of the valley, improving walkways and cycle ways through the valley is a top objective of mine. Local councillor, Joe Newman said, “I think this will be a great facility for clubs in Swords. It will be a shared facility and is something that I have been looking for over the past few years. I have been active in arranging meetings with local clubs and parks infrastructure to further this case. It is just a matter of identifying the best location and I hope to see this all-weather facility being available to as many clubs as possible, not just St Finian’s and River Valley Rangers and I hope clubs like Swords Manor FC can be included in this arrangement. where running costs can be divided. This should be for the whole of Swords,” said Newman.

Purchase Of Loughshinny Site Confirmed

on the acquisition of these lands into public ownership and I look forward to hearing their plans for the careful exploration of this key historical site, part of Fingal and Ireland’s heritage.” “These lands have huge Tourism and Historical potential sensitively developed and I will be encouraging the Council, the OPW and all relevant Government Departments to produce a funded plan to exploit the full potential of these lands. Newgrange National Monument in Co Meath had in excess of 150,000 visitors in 2015 according to an OPW press release in March 2016,” concluded an excited O’Leary.

Further to a report in a recent edition of the County Leader, local councillor, Tom O’Leary (FG) has confirmed that the 46 acre site at Drumanagh, Loughshinny, has been purchased by the County Council for a reported €1 million. O’Leary, who was the first to break the news of the possible historical importance of the site told the County Leader, “I am delighted to confirm that the council has acquired the historic lands at Loughshinny, which will be explored appropriately and developed as a national monument hopefully with suitable public access. “Did the Romans land in Fingal Loughshinny” that’s the key question.” If this is proven at this site, it has the potential to become a national monument as popular as Newgrange in Co Meath. “I want to congratulate Fingal County Council Councillor Tom O'Leary is pictured in Loughshinny as he points to the site at Drumanagh.

Farrell Rounds On Colleagues Over Rural Neglect In an unusual move, local Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell, has taken a swipe at his party colleagues in Government, by saying that the North County can no longer be forgotten in terms of the Government’s focus on rural Ireland. “North County Dublin is home to the largest rural area in County Dublin - an area which, for too long, has been forgotten in the context of support for rural Ireland. This is wholly unacceptable,” he said. “Our smaller communities, including Ballyboughal, Garristown, Oldtown, and the Naul, can no longer be forgotten in the context of supporting rural Ireland. Fingal is home to a substantial rural community, and is important to our national economy, particularly in the agrifood sector with such a large proportion of Ireland’s fresh produce coming from the North County.” He continued, “It seems clear to me that when investment is made in Dublin, the needs of rural North County Dublin are forgotten, and I see no difference when the focus is placed upon rural Ireland. This, in my opinion, is a complete disgrace,” he said. “With regard to this, I have submitted a parliamentary question to the relevant Minister asking for an outline of the funding provided for the rural North County and an explanation as to why it is too often forgotten in the

context of Government supports.” “For too long now, I have received information on investment in rural Ireland which has not included the North County. This cannot be allowed to continue any longer. I am frustrated at this, as I am sure are many residents of our rural communities.” “Ballyboughal,

Garristown, Oldtown, the Naul, and their environs must receive the Government support the deserve. It is not acceptable for some Departments to view them in the urban context while others view them in the rural context and all forget about their needs. “As the local Government TD in the North County, I

will not stand by while our rural communities are treated as peripherals when it comes to Government investment. The requirements of every community in the North County must be taken into account, and I will work to ensure this is the case across all relevant Government Departments,” he blasted.

I also hope that customers and PCU will be facilitated by being in a position to use the existing premises, avoiding the necessity of travelling, particularly for older people,” concluded the senator. Little changes that you make to your shopping basket can make a huge difference at the checkout. The weekly shop is a really habitual thing and it is easy to continue shopping without realising the unnecessary costs that can rack up. Here are some tips to turn you into a cost cutting ninja in By Darren O’Reilly the supermarket:

PLAN YOUR MEALS Look at what you and your family plan on eating for the week and make a list. This will prevent you from buying items that you just don’t need. Look online and search for the items you plan to buy and this way you can see which supermarket is going to provide the best overall price for you based on your needs.

GO OWN-BRAND The own brand products found in the shop really are just as good as the big branded products and at a fraction of the cost. All food manufacturers follow stringent food safety and quality guidelines so you are sure to be getting good quality products while getting the value for your euro.

SHOP ALONE If possible, avoid making a group outing out of your shopping trip. You will shop quicker and more efficiently without friends, partners or kids there to distract you or persuade you into diverting from your shopping list.

to all sorts of bad decisions and impulse buying. Everything looks tasty when you’re hungry so you could be inclined to buy more stuff that you don’t need so make sure that you are adequately nourished before tackling the shopping aisles.

BUY IN BULK You will often see great deals for buying large volumes of groceries in supermarkets so it can be a good idea to stock up if the opportunity presents itself. Things like cleaning materials, toiletries and canned or non-perishables are your safest bets when buying in bulk. Make sure that you’re buying stuff that you’ll be sure to get the use of and not just buying for the sake of it.

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SPEND Most importantly, keep track of what you are buying and look at identifying cost ineffective habits and continue to look at ways in which your household can be more thrifty in the supermarket

DON’T GO SHOPPING ON AN EMPTY STOMACH As we all know from the Snickers ads, you’re not you when you’re hungry. Go shopping when you’re a bit peckish and you’re opening yourself up

Curran Property Management Group has just moved from their old premises at the corner of Main Street and Bridge Street in Swords , to a beautiful new state of the art building at D6 in Airside Enterprise Centre, Swords on 1st November last. The company is comprised of four distinct divisions, which means that they cover all aspects of Property Management. These include, Curran Property Management, Curran Property Maintenance, Curran Plumbing & Heating and Curran Electrical, all under one umbrella thus providing the most complete and comprehensive property management service available anywhere. Managing Director, Gavin

Curran is delighted with the move, which he believes will add a new dimension to the already excellent service the company provides for its many customers. He explained about the services provided by Curran Property Management Group. “The main focus of our business is apartment block and housing development management. We currently manage almost 50 developments in North County Dublin and even up to Drogheda and down to Terenure on the southside. Curran Property Management is employed as Managing Agents to run a Management Company. It is often misperceived that the Managing Agent is the Management Company. This is not the case. The managing agent is merely an employee/contractor of the management company. Whether you are an owner in a development of 10 or 300 units, we have a package tailored to suit your needs. Services provided by

Curran Property Management, as managing agents include: • Preparation of Annual Budget and Service Charges • Appointment of contractors including Grounds Maintenance, Cleaning Personnel, Lift Engineers, etc. • Ensuring that a Block Insurance Policy is in place with competitive terms • Preparation of monthly statements and payments of invoices • Attendance at AGM, EGM and Committee/Director Meetings • Appointment of Auditors • Handling breaches of House Rules including Noise Disturbance, Car Park Issues, Waste Disposal, etc. • Service Charge arrears and Debt Collection and fulfilling legal obligations of the Multi Unit Development Act 2011 and Property Services Regulatory Authority. The company manages the majority of apartment blocks in Swords and Malahide, Lusk, Rush, Skerries, Balbriggan. From this, Curran Plumbing & Heating was developed and they are the first Property Management Agent in the country to be Gas

registered (RGI). They have a team of three plumbers and this sector is growing at a very fast rate. The work covered by the Plumbing and Heating includes bathroom fit-outs, boiler installation and replace-

out domestic and commercial lighting upgrades, installations, rewiring among other services. Gavin explained the advantage of having the four arms of company under one umbrella. He said, “We are now a onestop shop for property services, so we can manage your development, rent out your property for you if you’re a landlord. We can deal with all aspects of heating, plumbing, as well as electrical and maintenance. We will soon be going into small builds, attic conversions, extensions and this is now possible because we have our fully trained team behind us. Gavin is keenly aware that keeping pace with technology is a vital element in keeping customers up to speed on issues that may arise. He has installed a GPS system in the new office, where he can pinpoint the precise location of every mobile unit. In the event of an emergency, or a problem that needs

sorting, he can direct the nearest mobile unit to that location and give the client the precise time of arrival at their property. Another thing that sets Curran Property Management Group ahead of its rivals is that people can identify with him. “I was born and bred in Swords and some people call their companies after a fruit or a colour or abstract things that make no sense at all. But if you are prepared to put your own name over the door, then that speaks volumes and gives our clients reassurance that they are dealing with a local company that is growing. We have put our stake in the ground by opening this 2,000 square foot office in Airside Enterprise Centre and although we are in business for the past 20 years, we still believe that we are on the cusp of something very big,” said Gavin confidently. This arrangement is a win win for both landlords and tenants and is one that is very good value for money, as it takes away the worry from both sides. “We can rent out a house or apartment, so the landlord doesn’t have the headache of looking after it throughout the term of

the lease. We ensure that the letting agreement between tenant and landlord are fully compliant with the PSRA (Property Service Regulatory Authority) and the PRTB (Private Resident Tenancy Board).” The moment you enter the spacious new building in Airside, the profession-

Joy Of Fostering A Child

Can’t Sleep?

Fostering a child can be very challenging, but also a very rewarding thing to do. Children are in care for a reason and some situations are extremely sad. Foster-children sometimes need lots of support, e.g. counselling, play-therapy etc. Swords couple, Ger and Joe have been fostering children for over 10 years and they said, “We have an amazing 19 year-old daughter who, for the last 10 years, has been willing to share us with lots of other kids. We started fostering when she was 9 years old and the first child we fostered was 11 and it was a baptism of fire. My first piece of advice if you are thinking of fostering and you have young children of your own, is to “foster children younger than your own youngest child”. When you’re fostering, it has to work for everyone in your house.”

“Five Rivers Ireland are a fantastic organisation and we couldn’t have fostered without them – there’s someone there 24/7 and there’s also training provided throughout the year. Five Rivers works closely with Tulsa to provide children with foster homes,” they said. Sadly there is a massive shortage of foster families in North County Dublin for children from aged 0 – 17 years who cannot live at home. These children need care, short to long time care on an emergency basis. There is also a need for families willing to care for siblings groups, children with disabilities and unaccompanied minors. “If you are thinking of fostering, our advice is to go for it! If you can find it in your heart to give a child the love, care and attention that they need and give them happy memories then why not foster?” they said. If you think you could foster or would like further information, visit www.fiveroversireland.ie or call 01-8665290.

titled The Unseen. Unexpectedly, however, the evening ends with the spectral reappearance of his first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for five years. Aine Dilleen who has recently joined the dramatic society is taking on the challenge of playing the etheral spirit of Elvira. Only Charles can see her, which causes immediate problems with his very-much-alive second wife, briskly efficient Ruth. Lorraine Halpin, last seen in “I do not like the Dr Fell” is a wonderful Ruth. Also assisting in the séance are Dr and Mrs Bradman played by Cathal FitzGerald and Marjo Ruiter (another newcomer to the group). The cast is rounded up with the mysterious Edith, the Condomine’s new maid. Christina Fahy is delighted to be taking to the stage to play the part of Edith. Lisa Buckley directs the play. The group was founded in 1936 by the late Fr Moynihan and has been part and parcel of the Donabate Portrane community over the past 80 years.

Annual Fingal Business Excellence Awards and these awards are a hallmark of excellence for all businesses in the area. The Chamber Awards recognise and congratulate the business leaders who drive innovative business processes, product development, enterprise, sustainability and overall business success across all sectors. This competition is open to all businesses or organisations, both large and small doing business in the Fingal area, be it in retail, manufacturing, services or the tourism/hospitality sector. Guests included County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler, who launched proceedings by congratulating all those who were nominated for awards. He also acknowledged the close links that have been created between the Chamber and Fingal County Council, which has led to more investment in the region. He praised the wonderful efforts of local businesses, which provide top class services to their customers. Other attendees on the night included Darragh O’Brien TD, Senator James Reilly, Fingal County Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid, Ian Talbot, CEO of Chambers Ireland, as well as a gathering of Fingal County Councillors. work that our CEO, Tony Lambert does in organising this event every year. To our members, finalists and greater employee community, you should be proud. You have brought pride to the region and, as President, I’m honoured to represent you all,” he said. The highlight of the Awards night is the presentation of the JC Savage Business Person of the Year award, which was won by Dr David Keenan from Mallinckrodt, Blanchardstown. This award was instituted in 2010, in memory of JC Savage, who was a founding member of the Chamber back in 1994. To honour his memory, the Chamber created this award, which is presented to a businessperson who had been a ‘champion of success’ in their own business, creating high standards of business excellence and achievement, while making a significant contribution to the Fingal region. The winner, Dr Keenan has almost 25 years experience in the Pharmaceutical industry. In January 2014, he was appointed as Vice President, Global External Supply and Managing Director of Mallinckrodt Pharmaceutical Supplies Ireland. Council Freezes Commercial Rates As Budget Agreed The County Council has frozen the level of commercial rates for the sixth successive year, after councillors overwhelmingly agreed a budget of €216 million for 2017. The rates freeze will assist the competitiveness of local businesses in the face of a number of economic uncertainties, including the fall-out from the Brexit referendum. The 2017 Budget provides for a significant and continued level of investment in the social, economic and cultural fabric of Fingal, as it sets out to deliver on a Paul Reid number of core objectives including continued investment in housing which, at €55m, represents over a quarter of the budget. The Council’s planned expenditure of ¤215,953,800 next year will fund its day-to-day operations as well as contributing to the advancement of Fingal’s Capital Programme which will cost €324.4m over a three year period (2017-2019). The employment impact is also substantial and for every position directly employed within the council, an additional three jobs are supported as a result. This means that the total employment contribution from Budget 2017 is over 4,000 jobs.

Councillors opted to reduce the basic rate of Local Property Tax (LPT) by 15 per cent at a meeting on 12th September and charges will remain at the same level as in 2016. The decision leaves the Council with discretionary LPT income of €1.9m and reduces the income from the tax by ¤5.7m. Councillors voted to alter the rate of refund made on vacant property in 2017, as the vacancy refund rate is being reduced from 100 per cent to 75 per cent. The Councillors have reduced the rate of refund in an effort to further reduce the number of vacant properties in the County. Welcoming the adoption of the 2017 Budget by Councillors, who voted 30-4 in favour, the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “Fingal has strengthened its relationships with key Government Departments, officials, state agencies and wider stakeholders to support focus on growing the economy and building diverse communities that we are all proud of. The budget has been prepared following detailed consideration of all spending requirements and having regard to the objectives we have set in our Five-Year Corporate Plan. Meeting the demands for increased levels of service and investment in key assets, against a background of modest buoyancy in some income areas, remains a challenge.”

help the community. That first night, a total of 250 people turned up. Then in 2013, we booked a room for 200 people, and 450 turned up.,” he said. “Essentially what I’m saying in the book is

that we all have stress, but many of us don’t talk about it. What can be most disturbing about stress is that when we get the symptoms, we think we’re going mad. The first thing we need to now

Potholes On The Road Ahead The US election was the main topic last week right around the world. It certainly was the topic in the EU corridors of power. Trump’s success seems certain to stop at least in the short term any prospect of the ratification of TTIP. It would appear that all trade deal will be carefully scrutinised by the new administration before sign off. The UK may be able to take some little comfort from the changed political circumstance as they may be able to find a more sympathetic hearing in Washington next year. But Brexit is still on all political agendas, as all political players now try to catch up with what is in effect a runaway train which was not on their timetable. Enda Kenny has for whatever reason found popularity amongst his fellow Heads of Government in the EU Council. As we pointed out in the run in to the appointment of the President of that Council, Kenny was made for the job and the job for him. It’s a great regret that he did not seek the post. I’m confident that had he held the office, then the reforms offered to David Cameron prior to the referendum would have been such as to have changed the outcome of the referendum. Within the UK, polls now suggest that the view is in favour of remaining in the EU. The

about stress is that we are not going mad if you get palpitations or panic attacks, it’s a normal reaction. When you understand that, it will ease the stress,” he said. The book has 50 different chapters, each devoted to a particular technique to combat stress. Fergus

Finlay, who performed the launch said, “I have huge respect for Mark and when I read the book, I fell in love with it. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. There is a chapter there for everyone and it should be in every home in Ireland,” he said.

Government is appealing High Court decision, which places Parliament in the driving seat in triggering Article 50, to the Supreme Court. This current victory will give added confidence to those fighting this rear guard action designed to ignore the referendum result. If the process of serving article 50 is slowed down then the By Cathal Boland next European elections, as we have said before, may become entangled in the net. What that will produce is another day’s problem but it will not be easily resolved. Enda Kenny’s conference on the impact on Ireland of the UK decision was well received and it was good to see most of the island’s players take part. I noted that Martin McGuinness expressed strongly his concerns that Westminster will not reflect the will of the voters of Northern Ireland. The abstentionist policy of his party will greatly dilute the democratically elected voice of the people of the North at Westminster in articulating the clear verdict of the people as delivered by them in the referendum. That message was to stay in EU. The negative impact on the entire island which will be caused by a UK departure, particularly with a hard exit, places a great onus on the Irish Government to work smartly in finding real alternatives to enable the island to function as a single economic unit. If they achieve this it will be another move along the stepping stones laid so many years ago.
