Swords Kids Get Into Christmas Spirit A warm-hearted gesture by Swords children has been welcomed by the local St Vincent de Paul Society. Thirteen year old Nadine Lawlor-Redmond and her brother Leon (12) and sister Amber (7) from Broadmeadows, Swords teamed up with their friends Adam Cowan (11) and his sister,Marie (13) in an effort to raise funds for St Vincent de Paul. They decided to take to the streets of their estate, singing carols for families in need at Christmas. Nadine explained to the County Leader about how the idea came about. She said, “We knew that there are people who don’t have much to eat at Christmas and we just decided to help them by carol singing in our estate. We’re not long living here, but our neighbours were really generous. Leon said that they did the same last year and decided to do it again this year. A delighted Denis Barry,

President of St Finian’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul was overjoyed by the generous gesture of these children, who really demonstrated the real spirit of Christmas. He said, “It’s just wonderful to see young children like these, taking an interest in people less fortunate than themselves and realising that there are families out there, who don’t have enough to get by on. Mother, Sinead Lawlor was rightly very proud of her children and also of Adam and Marie. “I told them that the St Vincent de Paul is under great pressure at Christmas and it’s a really tough time for some people. As their mother, I’m delighted that they will take this with them throughout their lives. The children met with Denis Barry and his wife Phyllis to present them with €138, which they managed to collect, on behalf of St Vincent de Paul.

Ailing Fishing Industry Needs Urgent Attention The once thriving trawler fishing industry on the east coast of the country, is in grave danger of disappearing forever. This vital industry, which has provided essential employment and livelihoods for countless families in the North County, has been decimated, due to the restrictive quota system imposed by the EU. The decision to reduce quotas of whitefish caught in the Irish Sea, means that the only fishing available to the majority of trawler men, is for prawns. The County Leader spoke with , Bill Price a member of one of the leading fishing families in the region, who is the proprietor of Rockabill Shellfish Company in Balbriggan and whose family own 12 fishing vessels. He spoke about the changing dynamic in the fishing industry along the east coast. “We, as Skerries and Howth people used to depend on the Irish Sea for our livelihoods, but now we have all-weather boats, which are larger than before and capable of fishing for up to 10 days at a time. These modern boats can freeze prawns on board, and today’s skipper must have the similar qualifications as an airline pilot,” he said. However, not all fishermen are in the position to be able to compete at this level, and as the only fishing left to them on the east coast, is for prawns, any reduction in quotas has a devastating effect on jobs in the area. Fishing ports like Clogherhead, Skerries,

Balbriggan, Loughshinny and Howth used to have up to 30 boats in their harbours before the era of quotas, and the employment provided was a necessary lifeline to these maritime towns. Local trawler men are mystified by the tiny quotas on white fish in their areas, and many report on an abundance of cod, haddock and monkfish, but there are significant quota reductions on these, including 75 per cent reduction on haddock. The quota on prawn fishing has also been severly reduced, leading to boats being tied up in our harbours. According to Bill Price, “no fisherman can make a living with this kind of reduction in their total allowable catch.” Because of the nervousness and uncertainty surrounding the quotas imposed on prawn fishing, Bill Price has been forced to look elsewhere for this valuable commodity. He said, “We have been forced to source raw material (prawns) from the Northern Ireland fleet, in Ardglass and Portavogie, in order to maintain jobs at our operation in Balbriggan. The governing body needs to sit down and look at the situation. We need fishermen in decision making situations, not suits, who do not have the required knowledge of the industry. The fishing industry needs people, who understand the strategies and structures of the the industry, at the heart of decision making who have the interests of fishermen at heart,” he said. Many people living in our coastal towns and villages believe that it is high time that the Government realised that the fishing industry is composed of dedicated people, who deserve a hand-up, not a handout and that they should be provided with the same level of assistance given to the farming community. This would help to reinvigorate our coastal towns and villages, by providing much needed employment, just as it used to

DAA Welcomes New Transatlantic Service Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has welcomed the recent announcement by the Canadian airline

WestJet that it will begin a new daily Dublin-Newfoundland summer service from next June. The new route, which will operate from June to October in 2014, is WestJet’s first European destination. Canadian carrier WestJet flies to 87 destinations in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Dublin is its first Transatlantic route. The WestJet announcement means Dublin Airport will have four new Transatlantic services next summer, bringing the total number of North American destinations served from Dublin to 13. Christmas Hope From Swords Senior Citizens

Charlene Pigott, a Team Hope volunteer for 12 years, came to collect the boxes and gave a short address, saying how the children “know they are loved in Ireland, and know they are not invisible. Well done to everyone taking part and making a life different.” She gave her heartfelt thanks to the members and presented them with a certificate for providing a little hope to those who need it the most this Christmas. “A staggering 200,000 shoe boxes are donated each year, but it’s the one that counts,” Charlene concluded.

Once again, Swords By Emily Withers Senior Citizens have @TheCountyLeader completed a heartwarming good deed, as they set out to make Christmas a happier time for poor children in Africa this Christmas. They have managed to fill almost 100 shoe boxes, full of toys, which were collected by Team Hope representative, Charlene Pigott at the centre on Chapel Lane recently. The local senior citizens’ group have been supporting Team Hope’s Christmas ‘Shoebox Appeal’ for over a decade, and this year, a total of €625 was raised for underprivileged children in Africa and Eastern Europe. Charity Christmas Swim In Portmarnock The annual Christmas Day swim in Portmarnock in aid of St Francis Hospice is looming, and the organisers are calling on locals from around the North County to get involved. Over ten years ago, the Jesson family of Onward Walk, Portmarnock, were devastated when their dad, Billy died from a rare brain tumour. They felt compelled to do something in his memory and thought it was important give something back to St Francis’s

Hospice in Raheny, for all the care and support they received. The first Billy Jesson Christmas Swim took place the year he died in 2002, and was followed with a Golf Classic a year later. Over the past ten years, over 60,000 euro has been raised for the hospice. Last year, some of the money raised went towards the Laura Lynn House- the first purpose built hospice for children with long term illnesses. Times have changed and it is more difficult to

Rush School Wins Outstanding Drama Award Rush National School are celebrating their FIS Film festival success after winning one of the top prizes at the Helix Theatre recently. The award ceremony, attended by over 800 children and teachers from across the North County and beyond. It was the ninth annual film festival and was presented by Sinead Kennedy of RTE, with The Voice star Eoghan McDermott also among the special guests at the event. Children from over 100 primary schools throughout Ireland participated in this year’s project by writing, directing and producing their own five-minute films in a wide variety of genres, including comedy, history, and horror. To enter the festival, primary schools across the country were asked to devise a five minute long film on a subject of their choice.

Rush National School took home the prize of Outstanding Achievement in Drama for the film: ‘The Missing Mouse.’ The students involved in making the film were Enda Hurley, Darragh Halpin, Isabelle Gray and Harry Doyle from Mr O’Neill’s 3rd Class in Rush. Their film about a pet owner who loses his mischievous mouse received a total of

five nominations, including one for outstanding achievement in special effects! Mr O’Neill and his entire class were present on the day to support their classmates and to watch them receive the coveted award. Retired Principal Margaret Dobinson was also in attendance and was “thrilled” with the win for the school.

Reilly Welcomes Funding For Balbriggan BMX Track Local Fine Gael TD, and Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, has welcomed the provision of ¤35,000 in funding towards the cost of a BMX track for Bremore Park in Balbriggan, by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Dr. Reilly said, “This funding will help to provide a superb facility to young people to keep fit and healthy. With childhood obesity levels at an all time high, we need to be investing in more facilities like this. I am delighted that this project is now one step closer to completion,” he said.

Urgent Food Appeals In North County There is a worthwhile appeal this year, launched by the Archbishop Diarmuid Martin in association with Crosscare Food Bank. Parishioners are invited to support this vital cause throughout Advent, by donating non-perishable food items on each of the four Sundays of Advent. You can bring them to your local

Parish at weekend mass times and Crosscare will then collect and distribute the food to ten charities who benefit greatly from this service, including St. Vincent de Paul, who provide help to over 20,000 families at Christmas in the Dublin area alone. Food items that are urgently needed include pasta, rice, food in tins, tea, coffee, soup, sugar, powdered milk, biscuits, packaged desserts and hygiene products. At the current rate, Crosscare will distribute over 750 tonnes of food this year, compared to 500 tonnes in 2012, and there is still an ongoing need. Dr. Martin states, “They need urgent help sourcing food supplies or more people could be turned away in the coming weeks.’

Swords Pupils Do Their Bit For Environment Pupils from the Holy Family Senior National School in Rivervalley, Swords participated in a Litter Pick and Graffiti Removal Project in their local area on Wednesday, 27th November last. The children, aged 9-12 years old did a litter pick in the vicinity around their school and also painted over graffiti on walls around their local sports pitch. The children are pupils of Mr Tommy Duffy and Mr Peter Madden and each one was a credit to their school and were presented with an environmental certificate afterwards. The project

was organised by Gerry White, who is the Chairperson of Hilltown Environmental Awareness Group (HEAG), which is affiliated to Rivervalley/Rathingle Residents Association and Swords Tidy Towns. Joe Newman, who is a environmental officer for the Residents Association and community activist, was also there in support. Will New German Government Have Impact On EU? After protracted negotiBy Cathal Boland ations, the shape of the @TheCountyLeader new German Government was unveiled during the course of last week. The division of Government ministries will see Mrs Merkel’s CDU with six seats, her sister party the CSU three seats and their new partners the SDP will have five seats. Mrs Merkel was deemed to have won a convincing victory in the General Election. But the CDU/CSU position in this Government is not as strong as it was in the previous administration. Their electoral success was insufficient to secure an overall majority and it was gained partially at the expense of their then, coalition partners. That outcome forced the CDU/CSU to form this administration with their main political rivals the SDP. The adopted programme of Government states that German must become an official working language of the EU. Currently the working languages are French and English. Should Germany be successful and the UK with-

draw from the EU, we may all need to take night classes to keep up. The agreement has strong emphasis on “subsidiarity” stating that the EU must only act where action on other levels is not sufficient. It will seek to further enhance the role of the EU Parliament and promote the close involvement of national parliaments in the decision making process. And that the role and number of EU Commissioners should be one that is “stringent and efficient”. These policy positions may see the Germans seek to change the current practice of the appointment of Commissioners, from the appointment of a Commissioner from every member state, to a reduced number who would focus on policy areas. An appointment system under such a proposal is not clear, but could see Ireland without a Commissioner over a long period. The general sub text now coming from across all sections of the EU establishment is that there is a need for reform. That Europe needs to be big on the big things and small on the small things. There appears to be an opportunity opening for the UK to successfully renegotiate aspects of how the EU works. Will member states take the opportunity of such negotiations to rid themselves of troublesome partners, or embrace the opportunity to rebalance how the EU functions and how it interacts with the citizens of the union?

On Thursday 28th November, the countdown to the County Final as part of the ‘National Student Enterprise Awards’ was launched by Oisín Geoghegan, CEO of the Fingal County Enterprise Board. The event was attended by acting County Mayor Councillor Gerry McGuire and Martin MacEntree, Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board,with the Council and Training Board both being key partners and sponsors in the annual programme. Also in attendance were participants from three Schools including Loreto Balbriggan. Now in its thirteenth year, a record number of over 2,000 students from 22 secondary schools and nine primary schools in the North County are participating in the 2013/14 programme, which entails the students setting up and running their very own businesses between now and the County Finals in March 2014. Speaking at the official launch, Geoghegan stated, “The lessons they will learn from this experience are invaluable and will stand to them in the future world of business and beyond.” Category winners from the County Finals will advance to the National Enterprise Awards held in April 2014. We wish them all the best in their endeavours.

Scout’s Honour Eddie Darcy has been involved in Balbriggan Scout Group, now called the 34/164 Balbriggan Scouts, since he was just 10 years old. He is what one might call a true veteran of the scouting community, as he is still involved as a Group Leader today. He sat down with the County Leader to talk about why he’ll always be a scout at heart and why he is proud to call Balbriggan his home. He says the idea of being a member of a scout group, even at that young age, always appealed to him: I’d always liked the whole idea of being a scout, and two of my school friends had joined, so like you do when you’re that young, I followed suit, and that was it, I’m still here now.” “I always loved that sense of adventure I got from being a scout,” he said. “I think it’s a great way to for kids to build up character, as well as teaching them some fantastic skills.” They get to interact with children of their own age, learn new skills, how to cope when they’re out in the great outdoors, have plenty of new experiences and take on challenges. The activities are different to all the digital games and so on that a lot would play nowadays, which I think appeals to the kids," he continued. "I also think the different scouting activities give them a chance to do things that they might not necessarily be allowed to do otherwise, like lighting fires and things, so there's a lot of fun involved." The group participate in a variety of different activities such as: camp craft, orienteering, survival skills as well as the more traditional activities, so there is definitely something for all ages to get involved in. When I ask if he thinks scouting has changed over the years, he says that there hasn’t been any huge changes, and any changes that have taken place have been for the better. “What I notice today, is that there are a lot more young people involved today than there was years ago, which is fantastic to see.” He is delighted that some of his grandchildren are also scouts. “It’s great that I can encourage the grandkids, and I love seeing them get the same enjoyment out of it as I did as a young boy.” Eddie worked his way up through the ranks over the years, and has learnt all his tricks and tips from the ground up, which he is more than happy to pass onto the younger scout members. For those that don’t know, there are a number of different ‘ranks’ in a scout group: Beavers, Cubs, Venture Scouts and the

newest addition, the Rovers. These groups within the group, means virtually any age can participate. Having worked his way up through the ranks, he eventually became the group leader of the Balbriggan Scouts and is still as actively involved with the group now as he was when he first got involved. This in itself is a true testament to how much he devotes to the group, not overlooking the fact that he clearly loves every moment of it. “I’ve always loved working and interacting with children. Getting to see them accomplish all of their achievements, is one of my favourite things about my role as a scout leader. I still get as much out of it now as I did years ago.” He says that he has always enjoyed working with young people; which no doubt has stemmed from his scout duties. The local scout group is extremely active, and currently has about 120 members. The scout group obviously means an awful lot to Eddie, who along with all the other volunteers, devotes a huge majority of his free time to the group, but he says he wouldn't have it any other way. It’s a part of my life and I’ll keep going as long as I possibly can,” he continued.” I loved the scouts as a young child, and I still love being involved now. Over the years, I’ve been able to see how everyone gets so much out of the group; members and volunteers." He was recently given a special award to acknowledge his years of service and dedication to the group and the community by the Balbriggan Town Council, something which he was very proud to receive. “I’ve always felt a true sense of achievement being a scout.” He tells me that he has served under nine Chief Scouts, which is an accomplishment all in itself! He fondly remembers many highlights over the years, including the 2011 World Jamboree in Sweden which had thousands of scouts attendance. “It was quite an experience, seeing thousands of scouts come together.” Eddie is quite the globe trotter, having visited many countries around the world (mainly on scouting duties), and though he says he enjoyed all the travelling, he remains a home bird and loves to call Balbriggan his home. He enjoys other hobbies outside his scouting involvement (he loves music and used to play in a band, and he also breeds canaries), but his heart will always be with the scouts. “I can’t imagine my life without them,” he concluded.

“The scouts are a part of my life and I’ll keep going as long as I can.”

LEGAL Corner Buying Presents Online It is widely accepted that there is a significant increase in online purchases leading up to the Christmas period. Whilst many of us are wary of purchasing goods on the internet, the law does afford us some protections. Purchases on the internet are governed by the The European Directive on Distance Selling (Directive 97/7/EC) which was incorporated into Irish Law by the EC (Protection of Consumers in respect of contracts made by means of distance communication) Regulations 2001. At the outset, the regulations apply to purchases from the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. The USA is not covered by the Regulations. There are other exceptions, for example financial services products, online auctions, concert tickets and travel services. Some important protections afforded to you are: • You are entitled to a “7 day cooling off period” which begins on the day that you receive the product. During the immediate 7 days after you receive the product, you are entitled (without reason) to cancel the contract without incurring further charges save the charges in returning the goods. • Contracts contained in websites requiring you to waive your rights as a consumer are not

enforceable by the supplier of the goods. Omar Perrozzi • If the supplier is not in a position to supply the goods ordered within 30 days, you are entitled to a refund but beware that some websites will contain terms and conditions that if the goods are unavailable, equivalent goods may be validly furnished to you. In such circumstances, you should seek to impose the cooling off period above and return the goods within 7 days if you are not satisfied with the goods received. You should always be wary when supplying your credit card details. If your credit card is thereafter used in a fraudulent manner, you should contact your financial institution immediately. Financial Institutions vary in their policies regarding the fraudulent use of a credit card, but in any event your liability is capped at €150.00 pursuant to European Law. On a final note, it is only the purchaser of the goods who is deemed covered by the consumer protection, as you are not a “consumer” if you are the person who obtained the goods as a gift. All dealings with the supplier in asserting your rights should be made by the purchaser of the goods.

Medical Negligence Medical Negligence queries are often presented to our office for consideration. The area of law is a very specialised area and should always be approached with great caution. Before seeking advice in this area, John Hennessy the querist should check very carefully that the solicitor has the appropriate area of expertise. Medical negligence is a different principle to the standard rules of negligence. The Irish law on medical negligence was streamlined and summarised in the case of Dunne v The National Maternity Hospital (1989) IR 91. In this case the Irish Supreme Court said that, in order to establish that a doctor has breached a standard of care, it must be proven that he is “guilty of such failure, as no medical practitioner of equal specialist or general status of skill would be guilty of if acting with ordinary care”. Therefore, even if it is established that the Defendant (doctor) deviated from the general approved medical practice (made a mistake), it would be necessary further to establish that the course taken by the Defendant was “one which no medical practitioner of like specialisation and skill would have followed had he been taking the ordinary care required for a person of his qualification”. It is because of the particular nature of medical negligence law that experts are retained from outside of the jurisdiction for several reasons. A solicitor has to be very careful about bandying around loose negligence accusations. To do so, might result in the costs implications for the client and even a negligence action against the solicitor! Schools Joy For Balbriggan And Malahide There was some great news on the schools front in the North County last week, with the news that the Department of Education and Skills has appointed Educate Together as patron to a new second level school in Balbriggan, which is expected to open in 2016. This news comes in the same week that St Oliver Plunkett’s National School in Malahide, has been given the go-ahead for a new school at a cost of €7 million. Local TD Brendan Ryan (Lab), has welcomed the announcement that the new Secondary School planned for Balbriggan will be run as an Educate Together school. “I am very pleased that the new post primary school for

Donabate Project Gains Momentum A newly formed subcommittee dedicated to getting a new pool installed in Donabate, are working hard to ensure their project goes ahead. The Donabate Portrane Swimming Pool Project committee, now a subcommittee of the Donabate Portrane Community Council, started up some months ago, when a group of local residents decided that a pool was something that was needed in the community. Group member, Clara La Combre told the County Leader that the group were working hard to promote the project, and looking for more volunteers and support from the community. “The positivity for this project is really growing,” she said. “We have gathered more volunteers and have engineers, architects and project managers on board. We recently held an open day, where we answered any questions the public had for us about the project.” The project is really gaining momentum, and La Combre says they are in the process of looking at sites and dimensions for the pool and building their business plan. “We’re really delighted about how things are progressing,” she concluded.

Coffee Morning At Riasc Centre Swords Baptist Church are hosting a fundraising coffee morning at the Riasc Centre in the run up to Christmas, in support of local charities. The next one is on Friday, 6th December in aid of Nurture Post Natal Depression, a charity that provides support for anyone who suffers from any mental health issues around pregnancy.There is a small charge of €2 or €3 for the coffee and cakes, which serves as a donation. The morning is open to everyone and starts at 10.30am.

education. Parents and community representatives have worked hard for seven years in Balbriggan to achieve this goal, and are looking forward to a new Educate Together Secondary School in our community.” Meanwhile, deputy Alan Farrell (FG), was delighted has with the news from the Department of Education that St Oliver Plunkett’s primary school in Malahide will get new school building, with work beginning in 2014. He told the County Leader: “I am especially delighted with this news, particularly as St Oliver Plunkett’s is my old school. This will be a new three storey school, which will have a very positive impact on the local community. I have been campaigning for a new school for a long time, so this comes as great news. Students will stay on-site during the construction phase,” he said.

Fun Run For Rush Musical Society Members of Rush Musical Society swapped the stage for the outdoors recently, as they took part in a fun run to raise money for the group, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary next year. Participants in the 5k run assembled outside the Millbank Theatre recently for the jaunt around the town. The group are as busy as ever, having just completed performing a a variety of songs from the

society’s shows over the past 25 years, and next March the group will stage the hit musical comedy ‘Curtains’ for nine nights. The musical was penned by the talented Kander and Ebb who brought us some musical gems such as ‘Cabaret’ and ‘Chicago.” As always new members are welcome. O’Dwyer’s GAA Club and Balbriggan RFC have struck up one of the most unusual of alliances in sport. However, both clubs have one clear goal in mind, one that is driven by the necessity for the provision of sport for the youth in Balbriggan. The relationship began back in the summer of 2012, when both clubs decided to jointly run a white collar boxing event to raise much needed funds. With this in mind, the two clubs formed a joint fundraising committee and set about its task. A lot of hard work was done between June and November 2012, with a lot of late nights and worry, but in the end the

event was an outstanding success, with over 1200 people from the local community attending and tremendous support from the local businesses. The next major fundraiser for both clubs will be ‘Take Me Out For Christmas’, which will be held on the 29th December in the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan. Tickets (which are in limited supply) are priced at €20 and are already selling fast. The joint fundraising committee are brimming with new ideas for 2014, always bearing in mind that the effort is keeping teams on pitches and providing an opportunity for every child in in the community in Balbriggan to participate in sport.

Katherine who was born in 1908, shared her special day with her family, which includes 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The newest edition to the family, baby Leo, is just 10 days old and was described by katherine as a “handsome little fella.” Katherine, who is origionally from Carlow and a nurse by profession, is now residing at the Tara Wintrop nursing home in Swords. Her family have nothing but praise for the kindhearted staff and the work and care that they do for their residents.

‘Swimming Upstream: Finding Positives In a Negative Ireland’ is a book recently published here in Ireland and is written by Fr. Harry Bohan. It is an inspiring and insightful read, which speaks a vital message of positive change in modern day Ireland, emphasising a ‘rediscovery of the local,’ founded on the actions of individuals taking responsibility for their own lives. He writes, “The local is about identity, it’s about neighbour, it’s about pride of place, it’s about community.” Bohan believes family and community are the key agents in this vision of an alternative social model, which involves people taking back their power, and communities building their own value system from the ground up until it becomes an established way of life. The core of his message is as follows: “Support and retain

what is local but at the same time grow it with activity, creativity and vision.” He stresses that the Church has a fundamental role to play in this social change; that the Church must go out to the people and meet with them and that it should be “a place of evident courage, joy and hope.” This book is one borne of purpose, conviction and true compassion, as he is certainly a man who actively lives what he speaks, having founded both the Rural Resource Development Ltd in 1991 and the Céifin Centre in 1998. The work that he has achieved through these dedicated organisations utterly defines him as a man with a worthwhile mission. He observes that Irish communities are taking a step forward, and these steps are ready to be built into a movement and a hope for the future here in Ireland. Swords Job Losses Cause Concern There recent news that pharmaceutical company, MSD, is to close its Swords factory, with the loss of 570 jobs over a four year period, has been greeted with shock in the local area. The company, which is based on Drynam Road plans to cease operations at the site by the end of 2017, will begin to let employees go in the middle of next year. All local representatives have expressed concern and a promise to look for a buyer for the plant. Local employee, Patricia Rogers spoke to the County Leader about the news, and the reaction of her fellow employees. Reilly TD “The workforce are devastated. We had been told of job cuts globally last September and we thought that there may be a certain percentage of employees affected here, but not plant closure. Many employees are trying to come to terms with the news. The fact that many of them may never work again is particularly hard to take. Local busiRyan TD nesses in the immediate area will also feel the pinch, like shops and other retail outlets,” she said. Minister for Health and local TD, Dr James Reilly expressed shock at the announcement. He said, “It is deeply upsetting for the workers in the plant and for their families to get this highly worrying news, particularly in the run up to Christmas. While it is some relief that workers are being given advance notice and that plans for jobs losses are on a phased basis, it is nonetheless a potential body blow for the town of Swords and the North County in general. I wish to express my deep concern for the workers and their families and I pledge to play my part to make certain that the Government takes all appropriate action for the future of the plant and to

Local Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), also expressed his shock at the news, saying: “I am calling on the government to ensure the state agencies, the IDA and Enterprise Ireland, backed-up by support from Minister Richard Bruton, to get involved immediately. They need to look at the plant itself, the physical assets as well as the workforce (which is as good as any in the world), and use this opportunity over the coming months to highlight that message to alternative investors.” Local TD Brendan Ryan agreed, saying: “I will be pursuing the IDA on their commitment to aggressively pursue a buyer for the plant in Swords to hopefully mitigate against these potential job losses.” Fingal County Council’s Acting County Manager, Peter Caulfield, in collaboration with business leaders from Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the Chairman of Fingal County Enterprise Board, has arranged to meet the senior management of MSD’s Swords plant and the IDA to discuss finding a replacement company Sen. O’Brien for the Swords site. Caulfield stated that this announcement runs counter to all key economic indicators in the county; which are showing a steady decrease in unemployment and increased activity in the planning area. This is a modern sizeable plant and the Council is anxious to help in any way it can in the search €12,950 for a successor.

The Irish language is making a revival across the country, but also locally at Malahide Library, where you can improve your Irish in a friendly, warm and laid-back atmosphere. Every Thursday morning from 11.30am to 12.30pm, locals are welcomed to Malahide Library to take part in an Irish language group.
