Great News For Swords Castle The news that the County Council has been allocated funding under the EU Urban Development Fund Designated Centres Grant Scheme, has been given a warm welcome by all. The funding of €1.47 million will go towards the development of Swords Castle and the Civic and Cultural Quarter in Swords. By Patrick Finnegan

Reid said, “This is a great boost for the relevant staff concerned who put a lot of work into our submission. It will also prove to be a huge boost for Swords and our overall Cultural Plan for the town. We will continue to keep all updated as these plans progress.” Swords based councillors, Joe Newman (NP) and Darragh O’Brien (FF) have been staunch supporters of the development of Swords Castle and its importance to the economic development of Swords. Newman told the County Leader, “This is great news for Swords and the Council will match the €1.47 million. When I was campaigning for the local elections, the state of Swords Castle was a major issue, as well as that of Swords Main Street. Upon being elected, I had a meeting with the Chief Executive where I made known to him the concerns of residents regarding the castle and

The Council, in making its application, proposed three key elements of the Swords Castle development. The first element includes works to upgrade Swords Castle as an all year round venue capable of hosting planned events which will be more accessible as both a heritage tourist attraction and public amenity. The second part involves the derelict buildings on North Street which partially block access around the Castle, which will be redeveloped to provide public facilities including interpretation of the cultural significance of the Castle area, tourism information and a pedestrianised heritage route along the East wall of the Castle. The third element involves a public realm strategy, which will be developed and Joe Newman is pictured outside Swords Castle, as he greeted the allocation of implemented in front Cllr funding for the Castle and the proposed Civic and Cultural Centre of the Swords Castle at junction of Main Street and North Street. the deterioration of main street. “I attended quite a few consultation meetings about the castle and the Cultural Quarter and I put my views for Swords and the Cultural Quarter forward and I am hoping we can get a theatre/civic space into that area, which is a vision I have for Swords. I’m really delighted to see the allocation of these funds and I look forward to the removal of some of the derelict buildings to open up a view of the castle,” he said. Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) said, “This is more great news for Swords and most welcome. Last year was a great year for Swords, with Swords Castle re-opening to the public, the Swords Summer Festival, Oktoberfest, the Purple Flag award and the excellent score that Swords achieved in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) awards. This additional funding will go a long way to continuing the improvements to Swords Castle and to assist in the development of the proposed Civic and Cultural Centre on the car park space at the junction of North Street and Seatown Road. I am particularly hopeful that the first block of derelict buildings (including the old Barber’s shop) will be knocked early this year and I look forward to 2016 being another great year for Swords,” concluded Butler. The projects are about to go to tender and they will be completed within the three year programme of the scheme, with a combined cost estimated at €3 million. The ERDF submissions have been awarded grant funding of €1.47 million, with the balance funded by the local authority. It is hoped that works will commence this summer.

Welcome For New Jobs At Airport Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe TD, confirmed Dublin Airport had its busiest ever year in 2015, as a record 25 million passengers travelled through the airport during the past 12 months. Passenger numbers increased by 15 per cent last year with an additional 3.3 million people using Dublin Airport during 2015. The expansion was fuelled by 22 new routes and extra capacity on almost 40 existing services. To cope with growing passenger numbers, DAA is midway through hiring about 350 new staff in areas such as security, customer service, and asset management. The growth in passenger numbers is expected to continue into 2016,

as 11 new scheduled services have already been announced for this year, including new direct transatlantic services to Hartford Connecticut, Los Angeles, Newark, and Vancouver. There are also new long-haul charter services to Cancun in Mexico and Montego Bay in Jamaica. choice on existing services similarly helped to boost trade and foreign direct investment, all of which are assisting our economic recovery. DAA Chief Executive Kevin Toland noted: ‘Dublin Airport had a fantastic year of passenger growth in 2015, which is good news for the Irish economy, for tourism, and for job creation, both at the airport and in the wider economy. DAA is hiring 350 addi-

tional staff as a direct result of this growth in passengers at Dublin Airport. We recruited about 170 new people last year and a further new 180 staff will be hired during 2016.These additional staff are mainly in customer-facing areas, as we work to ensure that Dublin Airport continues to offer an excellent and efficient product to our passengers and airline customers as traffic increases.”

Bryan Cullen Back Working With Dubs The Dublin County Board has announced the appointment of Skerries man, Bryan Cullen as High Performance Manager for Dublin GAA. Cullen was captain when Dublin won their first All-Ireland for sixteen years in 2011, beating Kerry by a point. He has spent the past four years with Leinster rugby as strength and conditioning coach. According to a statement on the Dublin GAA website, Cullen will be entrusted with developing a long term player pathway from juvenile to senior level for the county’s players, as well as taking a lead role in the strength and conditioning of all Dublin’s inter-county teams. The Skerries man, who recently completed a PhD in Dublin City University will take up his new role in the coming weeks. Extraordinary Community Spirit In Donabate In an outstanding display of community spirit and generosity, the people of Donabate and Portrane have come together to raise funds for little Merryn Lacy, a local girl who suffers from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. The three primary schools in the area all came together to raise funds for Merryn, in an effort to secure vital treatment for her condition. In total, €5,723 was raised through a variety of fundraising initiatives involving the three local schools, Donabate / Portrane Educate Together NS, Scoil Phádraic Cailíní and St Patrick’s Boys NS. Teachers and pupils of the three schools joined parents of the organising committee at Donabate/Portrane ETNS last Friday, with the cheque. Gail Henshall, whose idea the fundraising campaign was, told the County Leader about the extraordinary community spirit and generosity of the people of Donabate and Portrane and the co-operation and enthusiasm of the local schools. “Merryn and her family are neighbours of mine and for a while, I have been looking to do

something to create awareness and to raise funds for Merryn. Another parent, Veronica Duggan and I decided to do something before Christmas. We met with Maeve Corish, principal of Donabate/Portrane Educate Together NS and she gave us permission to hold a movie evening for Merryn in the school, with support from all the teachers. The children donated items and were allowed to wear pyjamas to make it a really fun day. We held a raffle and went around a number of businesses in Swords, where we had phenomenal support there,” said Gail. “The children sold raffle tickets at SuperValu in the village and raised a lot of money through this. Maeve then contacted the principals of the other primary schools, Brian Horan from St Patrick’s Boys School and Ciara Greene from Scoil Phadraic Cailíní and they agreed to put a letter in the schoolbags of their pupils to let the parents know that they would be selling the raffle tickets, as well as the story of Merryn. This generated a lot of support within the community. It all just snowballed after this. At this point, the Girls School hadn’t allocated their charity, so they decided to donate the proceeds from their jumble sale to Merryn. In addition, some of the fathers from the school got in on the act and organised a Christmas swim, which attracted about 90 people, which alone raised €1,700. It is hoped to hold many more fundraisers for Merryn in the coming months.

Maya was a prize-winner in GOAL’s ‘Write the Future’ competition, a development education initiative that invited students nationwide to write to a person of their choice about the ongoing crisis. More than 1,000 students aged between 8 and 18 penned letters to sports-stars, musicians, politicians and other influencers. An excerpt from Maya’s letter to the Minister included the following, “Imagine it was your child that had to flee Syria because of the war? Imagine you had to stay and fight and your child had to go? And imagine if something happened to them and you were thousands of miles away? Imagine all of that! I don’t think you can. Well that’s what millions of Syrians are experiencing every day and you could be the one to help them when they reach our country.”

I just couldn’t believe it. I was so excited and a few days later my teacher told me that the Minister wanted to meet me. I met her at the Department of Education, with my teacher and principal. I also met Barry Andrews, CEO of GOAL, who was very nice,” said Maya. “I was brought into the Minister’s office along with my sister who accom-

She asked Minister O’Sullivan if there were no people from different countries, it would be a little bit boring because we’d be all Irish and we would know nothing about the culture and traditions of different countries.” Maya certainly left an impression on both Barry Andrews, who found her personality most engaging, as well as Minister O’Sullivan, when Maya decided to take a selfie with her. Maya’s teacher, Amy Fahy said, “Everyone here in the school is immensely proud of Maya. She took on board everything when we did a few lessons about the Syrian refugee crisis,” she said. Kind hearted Maya, who is an accomplished artist and singer with a wonderful personality, hopes to have a cake sale in the school to raise money when the first Syrians arrive, so they will know they are welcome.

Local Primary Schools Encouraged To Enter Awards The Minister for Development, Trade Promotion and North South Cooperation, Seán Sherlock, is calling on all North County primary school pupils from 3rd to 6th class to take part in the 2016 Our World Irish Aid Awards and imagine what our world might look like in 2030. The Awards seek to help children in Ireland understand global development issues and Ireland’s role in fighting poverty worldwide. Pupils learn about the lives of children in developing countries and the work of Irish Aid, the Government’s programme for overseas development. Pupils then create projects to highlight the challenges facing poor communities in developing countries, and the progress being achieved by Ireland and other countries in the global effort to fight poverty. North County Dublin was well represented at the 2015 Awards, with Balbriggan ETNS, Milverton N.S. Skerries, Gaelscoil Bhrian Bóroimhe Swords all making it to the regional finals. The theme of the 2016 Awards, ‘One World, One Future’, asks pupils to imagine how their world might look in 2030, and enables them to learn about the new United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development, which seek to address the root causes of poverty worldwide. “This year, pupils will learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development goals which were agreed upon in September 2015. The Goals are aimed at eradicating poverty, addressing environmental degradation and climate change, and building a more peaceful, fair and sustainable world. I encourage all North Dublin schools to get involved in this great programme,” said the Minister. Registration for the 2016 Awards programme is now open and the deadline for entries is Friday, 11th March.

Stern Warning For North County Students The horrific aftermath of the six people, who were hospitalised following the consumption of the 2CB Drug at a house party in Cork, should act as a warning to young people here in the North County. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is urging young people to stay away from the ‘designer drug’ 2CB after six people were hospitalised and one unfortunately died following its consumption at a house party in Cork. “We need to recognise that drug use happens and young people experiment.,” Kevin Donoghue, USI President, said, “We need to ensure that young people are being educated on the risks in a way that is relative to them. That is how we keep them safe - by arming them with information. The ‘just say no’ campaign simply doesn’t work. Young people don’t connect with it.” “We are urging students to stay away from the 2CB drug because it can have serious side effects, both psychologically and physically, such as paranoia, hallucinations, kidney problems and gastrointestinal effects.” The HSE issued a statement saying the full details in relation to the 2CB drug are not yet

available but it is thought to be one of the new psychoactive substances similar to those products previously sold in ‘Headshops’, like an ecstasy substitute. The Union of

Students in Ireland is urging students to be ‘vigilant’ when they’re at parties or nightclubs for dangerous substances. “Young people are advised that there is no

Celebrations As Jenny Turns 90 Swords Senior Citizens Club had a great reason to celebrate last week when one of their members Jenny Tierney, celebrated her 90th birthday. Jenny was joined in the club by her sister Maura, who is 92. The club was packed to the rafters when they brought out a beautiful cake and presented it to Jenny. All the members sang happy birthday to her and there was much excitement, with everyone jostling to get a picture of the sprightly woman of

International bestselling American author, Jacquelyn Mitchard visited Dublin with her family just before Christmas. Included in her itinerary was a booking for afternoon tea in Ardgillan Castle. This was to be the last stop on their Irish holiday before heading directly to the airport for their flight home to the US within a number of hours. All was going well as the Mitchard family climbed into the taxi in Dublin Airport and headed, as they thought, to Ardgillan Castle, between Balbriggan and Skerries. However the Mitchards found themselves some 35kms away from where they planned to be, stranded in the City, well away from their destination. Ms Mitchard said that they had been “hugely looking forward” to the event on the final day of their trip to Dublin, but were left “very let down” when they got out of the taxi at Dublin Castle and realised they had been taken to the wrong place. Paul Reid, Chief Executive Fingal County Council, on learning of the family’s misfortune quickly contacted Ms Mitchard to express his

Former Green Party leader and TD for Dublin North Trevor Sargent has backed current General Election candidate Joe O’Brien to win a seat back for the party in the new constituency of Dublin Fingal. Now living in Wexford, Mr. Sargent was recently back in the north county to support O’Brien’s campaign. O’Brien is a recent whistle blower after exposing poor treatment of homeless people and undercounting of homelessness in the Dublin region and Sargent referenced this fact in his endorsement of O’Brien at the recent Green Party Election Convention in Dublin. He stated that: “Joe Joe O’Brien made an extremely courageous decision as he risked his livelihood by standing up against powerful interests. Joe has shown exceptional commitment in fighting for vulnerable people. His record of standing up for the homeless and persisting when all seemed against him deserves great credit.” O’Brien was also swift to acknowledge the role that the former party leader has played in his decision to go into politics: “I don’t think I would have got involved in politics were it not for Trevor. The honesty and integrity that were the hallmarks of Trevor made me believe that there was hope yet for politics. These are very important legacies that I hope to build on in Dublin Fingal. We need politicians that shed light on some of the dodgy practices that go on in both local and national government and I commit to being a TD that will work for greater transparency in how government in run.”

The Moral Malaises The EU Parliament has now agreed to establish a “Committee of Enquiry” to examine the maladministration of and breaches of EU Laws arising from the US enquiry, which uncovered the car pollution scandal. This was the scam where a manufacturer installed software to produce false emission readings. Dublin MEP Nessa Childers says, “The Dieselgate scandal has seriously undermined trust in our regulatory processes. We must regain it, and start by recognising there has been wilful neglect in the face of one of the most powerful lobbies in Europe”. Ms Childers continued, “There’s serious moral hazard to the integrity of the process by which national approval authorities clear new

models for the market when they are getting their money from the manufacturers themselves, who are also allowed to choose and provide the vehicles used specifically for the purpose of testing.” “There’s serious systemic failure at stake, and I hope the inquiry committee will shed proper light on all its dimensions and issue robust recommendations. Hundreds of thousands of lives are lost prematurely to air pollution in Europe. There is a lot that we can improve on this front if we muster the political will,” she said. The points made by Nessa are right on the money. The lack of integrity and unethical behaviour continues across all sections of society, not just in big business, but down to how each citizen behaves. Business is run by individual people. The double standard which is accepted as the norm, must be confronted and

Europe needs political leaders who are prepared to lead, not just react. They must not only ensure that the laws rules and regulations are fit for purpose. They must also put in place control and enforcement procedures while instigating and leading national and European wide debates on the values which we should all subscribe to and be assessed by.

Figures issued by Focus Ireland show that 41 newly-homeless families were referred to its family services in Dublin in December compared to 60 in November. The Focus Ireland figures were released as the end-of year figures for homelessness in Dublin have been issued by the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive. The charity said the fact the monthly total of newly-homeless families has dropped by 19 families shows the positive impact the work of its services – and other NGO’s with the support of the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive - is having on the frontline. The total number of families in emergency homeless accommodation in Dublin fell by 24 in December, however, Focus Ireland said that

while this news is positive, the fact that there were still 683 families and over 1,400 children homeless in Dublin over Christmas – twice as many as in Christmas 2014 - shows the sheer level of the crisis. Focus Ireland Director of Advocacy, Mike Allen said: “It’s important to highlight that while positive steps have been taken to ease the homeless crisis, the Government has been too slow in taking up the solutions we have been proposing. The ultimate responsibility for this lies with Government as they have not done enough to deliver social housing to help more people escape from the nightmare of homelessness and to ensure others never even become homeless in the first place.”

Local senator Darragh O’Brien (FF) has warned that the Government’s flawed health policy will lead to more operations being cancelled and more people on trolleys in Beaumont Hospital. Hr said, “There were 41 people without a bed in Beaumont Hospital at the end of last week. This must be a record. How can a hospital be expected to function when you have patients without a bed?” O’Brien warned that the crisis at the hospital is likely to get worse as the Government has left a €100 million hole in the budget for hospitals this year. “This is yet another example of this

Government’s long list of broken promises. They said they would fix the health service, that there wouldn’t be people on trolleys and yet there were 462 people around the country on trolleys last Friday and operations have been cancelled at hospitals all over the country. “The December Waiting Lists for Beaumont Hospital published recently show that since July 2014 when Leo Varadkar became Minister for Health there was a staggering, increase of 3,163 people waiting more than 12 months for an Outpatients appointment. That is an increase of over 480 per cent and is totally unacceptable in a modern European country. “This is not just a cause of concern for patients it is also an issue of safety for staff. How can they be expected to work in these conditions? The health service is at breaking point and there is a full scale disaster awaiting in our emergency departments,” concluded O’Brien.

Old Borough Table Quiz The Parent Teacher Association of the Old Borough National School in Swords has organised a Table Quiz to take place on Thursday, 4th February at 8pm in The Old Borough (Wetherspoons) Pub on Main Street, Swords. The event is open to all.

Tractor Run Cheque Handover The ninth Annual Tractor Run in aid of St Francis Hospice took place earlier this month, which took the drivers across the North County. As normal, the event was organised by Barney Greene and, despite appalling weather conditions, almost 80 tractors took part in the event, which raised a whopping €7,275 for the hospice. On Sunday, 10th January last, Barney presented the sizeable cheque to Gene Murphy of St Francis Hospice, who was very grateful to Barney and the committee for their

A meeting was held in Skerries to launch a new Community First Responder (CFR) in the town. The meeting, which was held in Keane’s Bus Bar on Wednesday, 20th January last, was attended by a large gathering of locals. It was spearheaded by Dr Phil Darcy, who spoke to the County Leader about how this project came about. He said, “I’m a doctor who works in the Emergency Department at St Vincent’s Hospital and I do a lot of free hospital emergency medicine. We became aware of an organisation called CFR Ireland, which had their first meeting in 2005. It is made up of various groups across the country who respond to medical emergencies in their community.” “We felt that Skerries was the ideal town to have such a group set up, so I contacted members of the

National Ambulance Service and Community First Response Ireland and they agreed to come to Skerries to this initial public meeting to see if there is interest in establishing a CFR in the town. Hopefully, we will be in a position to set up a group here in Skerries. “We are looking for volunteers over 18 years of age and no experience of emergency medicine or first aid is required, as full training will be provided. People can

do as little or as much as they want. They become First Responders in the local community and there will also be roles in administration, sponsorship and other areas. There will be a rota set up and if you are on call, you will have an iPhone which will be directly linked to the ambulance service. When someone rings 999, or when someone has a heart attack, the ambulance service will automatically send an alert

to that phone and you will be given directions to where the incident has taken place,” he said. Des Kelly of the National Ambulance Service said, “It’s heartening to see such a great turnout here in Skerries and it’s vital to saving lives. We welcome any group who wants to set up a scheme and we support them in all aspects of training and providing all the help they need,” he concluded.

weds are opting to send pocket invitations these days. There are plenty of different wedding invitations options for you to choose from and the North County has an array of shops that will be able to make you pick the perfect invites. Alternatively, some couples might choose to get the less expensive, more affordable wedding invitations. The choice is yours.

THE WEDDING DRESS The focal point of the wedding for the majority of women (aside from the ceremony of course!) will be the dress. Because the temperatures are typically not too hot and not too cold over here (well, usually!), there are a lot of options for the wedding dress. It is best to choose a more versatile dress that can suit you in both warm and cold weather, just in case! (If you opt for a light dress, for example be sure to pair with a wrap). Perhaps you’d like an elegant splash of colour to your gown. There are certainly quite a few unique and stylish options and colours to choose from. The shops in the North County have many stunning dresses available to you, so the main problem you’ll have is trying to make your mind up!

PRESENTS Choosing an appropriate wedding present can be quite a stressful thing for invited guests. Do you give money, or do you try to find out what the bride and groom really need.? It is now becoming fashionable, especially for parents and close relatives and friends to help the newly weds with furnishing their new home. This is a very thoughtful gesture, as many newly married couples are saddled with large mortgages and are not in a position to provide proper furnishings for their homes yet. Presents like beds, new furnishings, kitchenware and other household gifts are

With the New Year well established, it’s that time of year when the bitter weather wreaks its relentless havoc on our homes. It’s also a time when all the bills seem to come at once, even though it would admittedly be tight enough simply dedicating any spare pennies after all those Christmas extras. Heating our homes is an expensive undertaking and many people, particularly the elderly, are forced to cut back on potentially life saving heat because of high costs. Fortunately here in the North County, we have a range of top quality options to choose from, in our efforts to stay warm and healthy. Nobody likes to hear that

helping maintain a cosy temperature in your home. Make sure you keep draughts out too by ensuring that there are no cracks in your windows and doors and certainly don't leave them open for any length of time.

Boilers

winter is here, but making the transition to the big chill is much more bearable when your home is a cosy haven.

Garden Sheds/ Furniture It's fairly unlikely you will want to be spending much time out in the garden over the coming weeks and months, so it is therefore very advisable to protect what can be protected. Sheds are often used for storage of a remarkable assortment of articles, most of which would rejoice at the chance of some type of covering. A thick plastic sheet or two should be protection enough for the change in season. The same applies in the case of garden furniture, however a closer fit is more imperative as they're much more exposed to the elements. Your local garden centre or a well-equipped outdoors shop on your closest main street are likely to be your best bet for those necessary extras.

Curtains It may well be worth investing in some heavy duty curtains. They won't take much time to hang and they're great for keeping heat in, and will continue to be useful in the Summer months for keeping out light from the early sunrises. So, be it patterned or plain, brightly coloured or more subtle, you'll have no trouble at all picking up the perfect pair for your home here in the North County .

Carpets Carpets are an undervalued source of heat

for the home, in that they retain heat well in their fibres. They are also non slippery, which is safer, especially at a time when wet footwear is expected and puddles form. There is little less comforting, than feet on a cold floor, so at the very least you could always lay out a rug or two. There is a great range of carpets and rugs available at your local retail park or your shopping centre, as well as local carpet fitters offering their services at competitive prices.

Boilers are essential for staying those comforting extra few minutes in the shower, putting your jumper on the radiator to make it extra warm and cosy before leaving the house, and for heating the house through on those bitterly cold mornings. It's also rarely possible to dry clothes outdoors at this time the year, so

the boiler plays an all important role. It is an everyday necessity and even from a safety point of view it's imperative to make sure it's in the best condition, or whether it may even need a replacement. Also, your pipes may well freeze, as well as the water, which can lead to burst pipes and a rather tall bill. Therefore, it is worth calling in the plumber earlier rather than later to check everything is in working order and to put some preventative measures in place. Now is therefore the opportune time to book it in for a service. Make a call to your local plumber today, so you don't regret it later.

Keep The Damp At Bay Do you often see patches of damp in your home? A great item to purchase is a dehumidifier. It effectively absorbs the moisture in the air, causing a noticeable reduction in the effects of damp. These will be readily available in many local department stores, supermarkets and specialist shops. Also, if you tend to suffer from a leaky roof more at this time of year, make sure it gets sorted before it ends up causing longer lasting disrepair. Call your local handyman without delay and get the problem resolved to save long term costs.

Bridie lost her husband Joe, father to Darren 29, Robert 23, and Killian 25, in August 2014 to Colorectal cancer. He was only 58. Rather than allowing themselves to get bogged down by the death of their father, Bridie’s sons decided instead to do something that would make their father proud of them. “The loss of their dad

was so great, that they needed to hold something, so they decided to do a football match” said Bridie. Two of her boys are members of the Balscadden Football Club. Along with a friend who had also lost his father to cancer, they decided to set up a memorial match between Balscadden and Balbriggan. The Peter Kelly and Joe Carr Memorial Match. “It was held on the 5th of June 2015. They split the amount that was raised with Peter’s family, so my lads donated €825 to the Gary Kelly centre in memory of Joe. They did it because I had gone down there after Joe had been diagnosed. The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre is in Drogheda and it’s like the Arc Centre. You’ve a walk in service, then you could have counselling by appointment, or tai chi, yoga, or relaxation. They provide an amazing service. I think they saw how much I benefitted from it and how much other people could, so that was why they chose there to donate to” said Bridie.

Darren Carr and Robert Carr presenting a cheque for €825 to the Gary Kelly Centre, Drogheda. Raised by their charity football match held in memory of their dad Joe.

Her other son Killian, who lives in London, also decided to do something in memory of his dad. “ I suppose after the football match happened he was thinking, what can I do. So he decided to run the Dublin marathon. He had never done it before and it was his first marathon. He set a time for himself that he wanted to run it in four hours and he did. He did it in 3 hours and 58 minutes. So he was delighted. He raised €1210 which also went to the Gary Kelly centre.” It’s not just her sons, Bridie herself plans to do the annual woman’s walk with The Arc centre next year. She also told us

how when Joe passed away they asked friends and family to donate money to the Irish Cancer Society, rather than buying flowers or wreaths. It is something to really be proud of. To see the pain caused by loss turned into something so heartwarming and selfless. “With all the boys have done, Joe would have been so proud of them. Joe was 58 when he passed away in August 2014. But by June 2015 they had organised the match because they needed to knuckle down and focus on something. Their father was a big sports man, and that was part of the reasoning behind them doing something

New Act To Keep Burglars Off Our Streets Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell, has said that the new Burglary Act will help keep repeat burglars off the streets in the North County and improve the safety of our community. “The Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, announced that the Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Act 2015 has come into operation. This is an important new act and means that bail can now be denied to repeat offenders. Speaking to the County Leader Alan Farrell said; “The problem of repeat burglaries is an issue for many people in Dublin Fingal. Statistics provided by the Garda Síochána show that 75 per cent of burglaries are committed by 25 per cent of burglars. This important Act allows for bail to be denied, and consecutive sentences to be given, to repeat burglars. It’s my hope that the act will reduce crime rates in the North

in sport to commemorate him. He loved horse racing and he would sit in the chair and watch it, and I would say ‘Joe you would watch two flies running up the wall’, and he would say, ‘You know, what? I would!’, it was a running joke for us, so now the boys have carried his passion on. He would have been so proud of them. I certainly am.” Robert and Darren plan on making the football match an annual event and it will be taking place again this year, sometime in June, and will again be called the Peter Kelly and Joe Carr Memorial Match. A wonderful legacy for a tragic loss.

County and will be a key weapon in the battle against crime.” He went on to say; “Home is the place where we should all feel most safe and secure. This is why Minister Fitzgerald is targeting prolific burglars. This Act will help to keep repeat burglars off the streets and to improve the safety of our communities.” This comes as a great relief to North County residents as we ended last year with the knowledge that rural crime is on the rise. This led to implementation of Operation Thor, which will also benefit from this new act. “The new Burglary Act also provides an important additional layer of support to Gardaí in implementing Operation Thor. These new provisions for tougher sentences and stricter bail for repeat offenders will now be available when persons charged as part of Operation Thor come before the courts.” Templemore has been reopened and a reported €46 million has been allocated for Garda vehicles He concluded by saying; “Our plan will deliver more and better new jobs and will allow us to continue targeted investment in areas like crime prevention.”
