Festival Fever Sweeps North County A host of wonderful summer festivals will descend on the North County this weekend, with family fun filled events in Swords, Malahide and at Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan. This year promises to see the biggest and best festival weekend in the North County ever. Over the past few years, we have become good at showcasing our wonderful county and enjoying all that the North County has to offer, in terms of food, music and general entertainment, where the entire community comes together in a shared cultural atmosphere, enjoyed by all. Like all successful community events, including festivals, tribute must be paid to the tireless work of our wonderful volunteers, who gladly give of their precious
time, many in an unseen capacity so that we can have a wonderful time. The festival fun all kicks off, almost simultaneously in Swords and Malahide on Friday evening, 22nd July. The second Swords Summer Festival and the annual Malahide ‘Has It’ festival will start off the fun. The Swords Festival starts at 6pm on Friday with a very special fundraiser performance for the Swords Lions Club, which will feature The Three Tenors,
the renowned Irish Trio. Last year saw the inaugural Swords Summer Festival create a carnival atmosphere in Swords Main Street. From 12pm to 4pm on Saturday, Swords Main Street will be transformed into a haven of Free Family Fun, with bouncy castles, slides stilt walkers, balloon makers, zip wire, face painting, music and entertainment and lots more. In Malahide, the Malahide Has It festival is also launching on Friday night 22nd July on the Stage, starting at 7pm and continuing until 10pm, with Shauna Byrne, winner of Malahide Has Talent, Andy Bennett and The Black Bank Folk showcasing their songs in commemoration of 1916. Both festivals will
continue until Sunday evening, with a myriad of events for the whole family to enjoy. Many of the events will take place at the Green in the town, where families can enjoy all that Malahide has to offer. Earlier on Friday the fun starts at Millfield Shopping Centre, leading in to Saturday events are jam packed with wonderful events, with some of the finest musical entertainment to had as the fun shifts to Balbriggan, where Cultural diversity will be celebrated with a fun filled family festival on July 22nd and 23rd at Millfield Shopping Centre, Balbriggan. With a population of 25,000, Balbriggan is one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland
with the festival, which is aimed at informing, unifying and celebrating the rich diversity of cultures in the community, kicking off on Friday July 22nd at 12 noon. Following an increase of 8,000 residents over the past 20 years, Balbriggan has experienced a surge of cultural diversity with over 40 languages n o w spoken within the area. So you can expect a very colourful event, with diversity and fun the order of the day here. Of course, no sooner have we recovered from festival fatigue, than it’s time to start all over again, when the hugely popular Rush Harbour Festival takes place over the August Bank Holiday. It starts on Friday 29th July and runs until Bank Holiday Monday, 1st August.
Highlights will include a spectacular Air Show which is scheduled for Saturday, weather permitting. Other festival favourites will include the ever-popular Sandcastle building competition and the
Heritage Trail tour, which takes you on a trip around Rush to see and learn a bit about the amazing history of pirates, French sailors, sinking of the Tayleur and the history of the Palmer Estate and Kenure House, the maritime history of Martello Towers, etc. Brilliant stuff! It all adds up to a wonderful two weeks for the citizens of the North County to have a great time enjoying the very best we have to offer. All we need is for the weather to oblige.

A young girl scout from Lusk is being hailed as a heroine, after she and another scout rescued a young boy from drowning, whilst on a family holiday in Turkey. Mollie Tamara Powell (16) from Lusk Village is a member of the 38th Rush Scouts and she and Sean Thompson from Wexford, a 16-year-old sea scout were on holidays with their families at the time. A young boy, 14 years old local was injured in the river in the holiday resort of Alanya last week. Reports suggest that the boy had jumped off a 20 foot bridge into the river, and other children jumped too close to him, knocking him unconscious. When Mollie and Sean saw the young boy sinking in the water, they sprang into action. Mollie’s mother, Celine told the County Leader what happened next. “Sean dived into the river and with the help
of Mollie, they pulled him out. Mollie began CPR, cleared his airway and placed him in the recovery position, until a nurse then took over. Both Mollie and Sean are only 16. The police here in Turkey have said that the boy would have died if it was not for the quick actions of Mollie and Sean,” said a very proud Celine. The young boy was brought to hospital and is believed to be recovering well.

A very modest Mollie told the County Leader, “I have a younger sister who is aged 11 years old and also is involved in Rush 38th Scouts, as well as my dad who is a section leader for Cubs. If I had to say one thing about the incident, myself and Sean from 6th Tuskar Scouts in Wexford is that we are no heroes. Any decent person would have done the same thing and we both just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I feel my
scout training over the 10 years I have been involved in the organisation aided me greatly and up until the accident occurred, I never actually thought I would ever need them,” she said. A spokesperson for Scouting Ireland said, “Mollie and Sean are a credit to their families and the association. Giving young people the skills and confidence to do what is needed in difficult situations is what Scouting is all about.” Fingal County Council launched it's beach friendly wheelchair on Portmarnock Strand. Pictured is Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler and local resident Joan Lupton enjoying the fantastic weather the weekend had to offer.

Marathon Undertaking By Swords Business Couple Principals of local landscaping company, Virgoe McEnery, based at Balheary, Swords have decided to enter a team into a series of gruelling marathons in the coming weeks, all in aid of St. Francis Hospice in Raheny and Blanchardstown. The team will be made up of company directors, Michael McEnery and his wife, Tracy Virgoe. Michael was recently elected as President of the Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal and both he and Tracy are avid marathon runners. Micheal spoke to the County Leader about the tough schedule that is facing the couple. “We will be running a series of marathons, starting on Sunday, 7th August in Tralee, with the ‘Run the Kingdom’ event, which will be an ultra marathon of 100 kilometres. This is the
equivalent of 2.5 marathons and is expected to attract up to 100 runners. Michael is originally from Tralee, so he is looking forward to running on his old stomping ground. Then a few days later, the intrepid pair are heading up to Donegal to complete four marathons in four days, – quite an achievement. Tracy will run in the Donegal events, while Michael will compete in Tralee and in Donegal. This means that the combined distance that both Michael and Tracy will have covered will be almost the entire length of Ireland. Michael, who is a very keen marathon runner, said that training is in full swing and he runs a marathon about every week, including five in the month of June, as well as two marathons
planned for the last weekend in July. Michael, who has 30 marathons under his belt confirmed that these upcoming events will be the toughest he has ever undertaken. They are both looking for generous support and sponsorship for this massive undertaking, which is all going to St Francis Hospice. The courses are run by brother and sister team, Aubrey Gowing and Alison Kavanagh, originally from Portmarnock, who have 30 years experience in training and therapies. Aubrey said, “When most people hear about massage, they automatically think of relaxation therapy but I am interested in the therapeutic side of things. Correcting chronic pain is one of the main focuses in my clinic. People often have relatively small injuries, such as an ankle sprain, that if left untreated, can develop over time into more significant issues like chronic knee, hip or back pain.” “What we’re really focused on in our treatment clinic and sports training is teaching people how to correct these things and to catch them in time, which can make a tremendous difference in terms of preventative healthcare,” he said. Aubrey specialises in the Sports Massage training programmes, including

A lot of people are given exercises to strengthen tight muscles, which makes them worse – they need to stretch the tight muscles and strengthen the weak ones,” said Aubrey. Alison specialises in complementary therapies, relaxation treatments and energy work to promote healing. She spoke about the severe levels of stress that people experience in this day and age, with so many things to juggle. “People just don’t take time out to let the body recuperate. Through relaxation therapy, the mind has a chance to switch off and then the natural healing and repair takes place. It’s very subtle, I deal with the underlying cause of what is creating these
pressures and stresses, so it’s the healing and relaxation aspect that I am primarily interested in” said Alison. Alison explained, “We combined two of the

The figures released last week James Reilly show that Fingal’s population has grown by 8 per cent in the last five years, which is the highest rate in the country. Reilly said, ‘This underscores the need for further infrastructure in the North County especially in transport, housing and education. It is essential that our young, diverse and growing population have proper transport links to third level education facilities and job opportunities that exist in Dublin and it is essential for the further expansion and development for existing and new businesses in the area, particularly at Dublin Airport. We face a challenge from Brexit, but Fingal is very well placed to turn challenge into opportunity if we have the infrastructure to support us to do so,” he said. “Further, the population increase shows that we need more schools and greater school capacity in the North County. There is a situation where many schools, such as Lusk Community College, are greatly struggling with over-capacity. It’s not fair that children should be educated in cramped conditions and it’s not fair on teachers and school management either as they get placed under enormous stress trying to do their job. However, I welcome the many recently completed new schools and those that are currently under construction. It is also heartening to see many extensions to existing schools that have been approved in recent weeks. This is critical for our young and diverse population to take advantage of new job opportunities that will arise.’’ “I have asked the Leader of the Seanad, Jerry Buttimer, to invite the Minister for Transport Shane Ross into the Seanad so that he can address some of our concerns and to hear his plans for getting Metro North under construction as quickly as possible. I have also been in contact with the Minister for Education Richard Bruton about the urgent need for school building projects to go ahead as soon as practical. With the economy powering ahead and unemployment falling, these must be priority areas for public spending.’’ he said.

Summer Camps are always a sure sign that the children are on school holidays. Last week, summer camps were held at various locations across the North County and included GAA and rugby camps. Locations included Balbriggan Rugby Club, where Leinster stars, Dave and Mark Kearney put the children through their drills. A very successful summer camp was also held at Malahide Cricket club. The Kellogg’s Gaelic football Cúl camp was held from Monday to Friday at Fingal Ravens GAA Club in Rolestown, and as always, it proved to be a great success. Fingallians GAA Club held their own football camp last week, which was enjoyed by boys and girls of all ages. Summer camps are held across the North County in various locations over the summer and they are ideal for getting your little ones out and about and enjoying all the fun that the summer camps will have to offer. It is also an ideal way to make sure they keep fit, by keeping active. All the camps around the North County are a paradise for families with young children and most importantly, they’re safe and secure. See more pictures in next week’s edition.
