Determined Reilly Still In Cabinet Health Ministry Remains In Fingal Loss Of The Transport Portfolio May Sound Death Knell For Swords Light Rail System The upshot of the much anticipated cabinet reshuffle, may prove to be a bitter sweet one for the North County. The appointment of Leo Varadkar as the new Health Minister, replacing incumbent, Dr James Reilly, means that Fingal had managed to hold on to this very important Government portfolio. This will be regarded as a major plus for the region. The fact that we have managed to retain two cabinet places in the area, is of utmost importance. However, many locals will be fearful that, with Minister Varadkar’s departure from Transport and Tourism, the much needed light rail system promised for Swords, will now be doomed.

But Was His Removal From Health Really Necessary? Last Friday, 11th July was a traumatic day in the life of local TD, Minister James Reilly. It was the day that he was removed from the Health portfolio, in the much anticipated cabinet reshuffle. By Patrick Finnegan

This move had been widely anticipated for many months, during which time, the former Health Minister came under severe pressure, due in the main to what was perceived as a ham fisted effort to reverse the recent medical card fiasco. The writing on the wall was clear, and this was seen as one of the prime reasons that Reilly lost the health portfolio. He has been appointed as Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, which many believe is a demotion for him. His appointment was welcomed by Fergus Finlay, CEO, Barnardos, who said, “We welcome a politician with James Reilly’s experience as Minister for Children and look forward to working with him on the key issues relating to children. We would also call for a period of stability in this position

now. It would be extremely disappointing if a ‘musical’ chairs approach to the appointment of this role, resulted in it being seen as a lesser Ministry. His replacement as Minister for Health is Leo Varadkar, himself a fully qualified doctor. He is also from Fingal, meaning that the region still retains it’s two cabinet positions, which can only benefit residents here. During his tenure as Minister for Health, Dr Reilly has had some victories as well. The most notable of these, from a local perspective, was securing a primary care centre for Balbriggan and Swords. This caused huge controversy across the country, and led to the resignation of his colleague, the Labour Party Junior Minister for Health, Roisin Shortall. The location of the facility, in the heart of Dr Reilly’s constituency, was met with controversy last year, when it was deemed that it was added to a priority list of towns, vying for the new centres at the last minute. Portmarnock AC Are National Champions It was a wonderful occasion for Portmarnock Athletic Club, when their under 13 relay team were crowned national champions on Saturday, 5th July last. Ireland’s very best relay teams headed for Tullamore Harriers for this year’s GloHealth Juvenile Relay Championships. Representing Portmarnock AC, and Dublin, were the U13

boys team of Mark Morris, Conor Archer, Ronan Patterson and Michael Farrelly. Mark Morris had a brilliant start, ending his leg on a similar note, with a fine change over to Conor Archer, who stormed up the straight to Ronan Patterson, who ran the race of his life finishing with a smooth changeover to Michael Farrelly for the last leg. At this stage, the

Boyhood Dream Realised For Balbriggan Man A Balbriggan angler has his childhood dream realised after By Jennifer McShane winning the National Challenge Trophy at the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association’s National Angling Championship. Stuart Marry has been trying for over two decades to get the chance to represent his country, and thanks to his magnificent victory, he’ll go on to represent Ireland in the International competition in 2015. Stuart received the prestigious trophy after he beat no less than 126 other competitors, catching eight trout and scooping the prize. This competition took place last month at Lough Lein, the largest of three lakes in Killarney, and Stuart and his boat partner, Tony Hogg took part in the gruelling eight hour challenge before emerging victorious. Weather conditions were less than perfect, but considering competitors needed just three good trout to be in with a chance of qualifying, the Balbriggan man was way ahead with his eight trout win. He told the County Leader that he was delighted with his win and “more surprised than anything else.” He then mentioned a little about his fishing background: “I’ve been fishing since I was about 10 years old, when I caught my first mackerel with my dad, and I suppose I remember enjoying it so much that I’ve just kept it up over the years,” he said. “I learnt everything I know from my dad and an uncle of mine, Bernard Kenny - they taught me everything about fly fishing.” Another of Stuart’s uncles, Brendan Marry, qualified to represent Ireland in 1974. However he died suddenly before getting a chance to compete, so Stuart feels that his recent win is a great chance to pay tribute to his uncle. He is already gearing up for next year’s internationals, and we’ve no doubt he’ll do Ireland proud. “I’m nervous, but excited and ready to give it my best shot,” he concluded.

medals already looked decided as there was a substantial gap between first (Leevale AC, Cork), second (Portmarnock) and third (Letterkenny AC) positions. But Farrelly showed his class and managed to haul in the Leevale AC anchor and win gold in a time of 53.21. This was a fitting reward for the boys, who have trained so hard together over the last year.

First Ever Green Flag For Swords School Just before they finished up for their summer break, the pupils, staff and parents of the Holy Family JNS in River Valley in Swords celebrated earning their first Green Flag, rewarding a year of hard work by all at the school. The Green Flag was awarded for the work done by the school community managing Litter and Waste over the past two years. The Green Schools Committee, consisting of staff, parents and over thirty pupil representatives, tirelessly promoted the green theme with

the slogan ‘We are keen to keep it green.’ The 670 children in the school joined in for tidy-ups, recycling and other green events organised by the hard-working committee, with the children’s parents turning out in large numbers for a tidy-up of the school grounds earlier this year. The grounds were looking particularly well in the sunshine for the flag raising, which took place just before the end of the school term. The whole school, together with parents, were outside to watch the ceremony. The band, consisting of nine teachers from the school, led the pupils singing their own Green Schools song, written by pupils and teachers for the occasion. The fun day, featuring bouncy castles with goodies afterwards, rounded off a memorable day for all at Holy Family.

The report said that house break-ins were still an issue for the area, and Gardai have also advised residents not to leave valuables visible in cars, which can result in break-ins. They urged everyone to double check and make sure that cars were not left unlocked . Councillor Joe Newman (NP), is hoping to secure a similar system for Swords.

There were calls for a committee hearing for Ireland’s nominee before they get their ticket for Brussels. Enda Kenny did not take kindly to the suggestion and it not going to happen. Slow Internet “A Thing Of The Past” There is good news on the horizon for local businesses and residents of the North County, as local TD, Minister James Reilly (FG), has said that homes and businesses in Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Swords, Malahide and Portmarnock are set to benefit as a result of a joint ESB and Vodafone venture to upgrade broadband facilities. “Slow internet will become a thing of the past for these local towns,”Reilly told the County Leader. “As a result of this major investment plan announced by the ESB and Vodafone, homes and businesses in these towns will be able to access high speed broadband. This will help to

attract new investment and sustain existing businesses, as well as improving the quality of broadband available in people’s homes,” he said. “As a resident of Rush, I know how frustrating it has been to have inadequate internet connection,” Reilly continued. Indeed, this news should bring some welcome relief to local business owners and residents alike, who have grown increasingly frustrated by the lack of decent broadband services in some rural areas and other towns. The County Leader has reported numerous times on this in recent weeks, and local councillor Anne Devitt (NP),

has been a particularly strong advocate on this topic for rural residents. When this plan is rolled out, it is hoped that it will put an end to these frustrations. “The initial phase of this plan will involve a fibre build out to over 1,100 villages. The deployment of fibre will be as close as possible to strategic locations such as local schools, business hubs, health facilities and Garda Stations,” Reilly explained. “We need to be ambitious by future proofing our broadband network, with the objective of solving the connectivity challenge in rural areas for the long term. Improving broadband access in rural Ireland will help ensure that our economic recovery is being felt in every town and village across the North Country,” Reilly concluded.

Important Fundraiser For Little Molly

Great Community Spirit In River Valley The sense of community co-operation and spirit was in full evidence in River Valley on Monday last, 7th July, when a group of dedicated local volunteers took to the local shopping centre, in an attempt to keep the area is pristine condition. The group was led by Cllr Joe Newman, and included volunteers from the Hilltown Environmental Awareness Group, as well as members of the local River Valley and Rathingle Residents Association. Newman, who has not rested on his laurels since his election as a councillor last May, told the County Leader. “Last year, we had a tidy up, which saved the

Council in the region of €10,000. I’m aware that, with an ever increasing population and diminishing resources, communities must work hard to keep their areas clean and tidy, leading to a keener sense of community awareness, which is more important now, than ever before,” he said. This scenario is replicated in many communities across the North County, as tireless volunteers willingly give up their precious free time, to enhance their local areas, in which they have great pride. It is hope that their endeavours will be recognised at the prestigious Tidy Towns results later in the year.

Great Malahide Quiz For Local Tidy Towns “The Great Malahide Quiz” takes place at the Grand Hotel, Malahide on Thursday, 24th July at 8pm. Teams of four cost €40. This annual quiz is a vital fundraiser for Malahide Tidy Towns, as it raises much needed funds to help them with the job of keeping Malahide beautiful. The quiz has always been very successful, and the committee are hoping that this year it will be bigger than ever. Your support for this event will be very welcome.

Malahide Gears Up For Community Festival The Malahide Chamber of Commerce and other local groups around the town are gearing up for the 2014 Malahide Community Festival, which is to take place from July 25th to 27th. The festival is a source of great excitement and fun each year,

YOURVIEW With reporter Amrit Sidhu

Q:

We asked, ‘Do you think Joan Burton’s appointment as new Labour leader, will make a change to government policy?’

Focus: The Art Of Clear Thinking A Review By Amrit Sidhu

Amrit Sidhu

Paddy O’Carolan, Swords I hope it does. I do think she’s a very strong woman. She’s well able for them all. She’ll give the Taoiseach a hard time. She’s going to get what she wants, and if they don’t give it to her now, she’ll get it in time.

Mary White, Skerries Well I’d be very disappointed if it doesn’t. We should have had her in, in the first place. In my opinion, we wouldn’t be in this mess, if we had her in anyway.

Derry-Ann Morgan, Malahide I would hope so, because I do believe she has been very good in her position. I think if anybody could make a change, she will. She will argue with the others, she’s very feisty and I like that about her.

Peter Beveridge, Swords No, because she’s out for making too many cuts. She’s out for cutting things like social welfare, the children’s allowance, you know things that a lot of people are depending on. Every time something that one government puts there for the people, gets taken off them.

Michael Keenan, Swords Yes I most certainly do. I think she’s a strong woman, and her opinions will be listened to.

Chris Trimble, Swords Yes, I think she’ll make changes. I don’t think she likes Enda Kenny, which is a good thing. She might stand up to him, and get rid of the dead weights, with the likes of Reilly out of there, he had to go.

Sean Corney, Swords A slight change maybe. Well they are only a small party, I don’t think we’d see big changes in the government, but they have managed to put some of their policies through.

Colin Halpin, Rush With the way things are happening at the moment, it doesn’t seem like there will be a change. If it does, it’ll be very slow, but otherwise, no I don’t think so.

Mary Grimes, Swords No, I just don’t believe in any of them to be honest, none make a positive change.

Rory O’Connor, Swords No. Joan Burton? She’s a disaster. I saw her on Vincent Browne one night, and she was like a headless chicken. They’re all a joke.

Gerry Warnock, Swords Maybe. She will have some small influence, but the fact that she hasn’t got as strong a mandate as the other parties, you know. I don’t know what type of influence she’ll have but maybe to some degree.

Gerry Maloney, Swords It doesn’t matter. The governments in every country are manipulated by all these capitalists. They’re the ones who really run countries. They’re all these filthy rich, greedy people, who believe money is the source of happiness, well it’s not. In the end, they’re left with nothing. They just abuse their power.

Jason McCormack, Dublin No. I think in light of the election results, to pick an old woman to be leader, is just so short sighted, it’s unbelievable, even if they were to pick an old man. Do these people not realise why they got hammered? But to pick her, who’s in charge of the social welfare, the one who’s been putting all these cuts in that everyone’s disgusted with, and then to choose her as leader. I’m actually glad they did, because it means they won’t survive.

Everyone goes through a time where they feel they’ve lost focus at some point in their life. Whether this be on a career start, career change or life change, this book, ‘Focus: The Art Of Clear Thinking,’ will help all people on all paths strengthen their focus to self improve and escalate into happiness. What at first appears to be another bogus ‘self-help’ book, soon becomes a dependent model of guidance. Written in two parts, Valerie Pierce introduces her simple model of success, a metaphorical stairway reaching to peak performance, whilst maintaining strong focus. A relationship is formed between the reader an author, with compelling stories of her childhood, and Pierce ensures we level with her ideas and beliefs, building great trust in both the model and author. Visual elements, as well as simple

metaphors really do help break down the theoretical side of the model, and Pierce’s glorious way with words explains it further in the simplest form. Whilst what is said isn’t exactly far from the usual, it is the perfect pick me up for one who’s feeling a little low, lost or suddenly lacks belief or self esteem. The model is a powerful way to motivate readers on how to work on their focus and self-esteem. This isn’t your typical ‘can’t put me down’ book, in fact, quite the opposite. Pierce encourages the reader to take a break and ponder on the information fed, to really get a grasp of the theory before putting it into practice. The book is like a short course in itself, with small, thought provoking tasks for the readers, helping them put the model into practice. Readers can learn more from taking a break, to consider each chapter wisely or return back to it whenever in need of some inspiration or guidance. This may be the best thing about this book, with each read, we can always learn something new from it. As Valerie Pierce herself writes ‘My purpose is to create a successful book which I hope the reader will enjoy and find useful’ that’s exactly what it does. What better way to enforce her own message than to show us her method put to practice in the form of a great, inspirational book.

Cllr Malachy Quinn (SF), has demanded that the Government prioritise the building of new social housing for the next two years. Quinn was responding to a new report by the Housing Agency, which reports that a total of 925 housing units are needed to be provided in Balbriggan, in the next year. Quinn told the County Leader, “This report is a timely reminder that the housing crisis in Balbriggan has not gone away, and in fact demonstrates that those in need of social housing have more than doubled in recent years,” he said. “We in Sinn Féin believe

the best way to tackle the issue of ever increasing social housing waiting lists, is to embark on programmes to make boarded-up homes habitable once again, as well as to build new units. This would not only help provide the necessary social housing units, but would also help the badly hit construction sector. For us it’s a no-brainer people need homes, construction workers need jobs.” He continued, “The people of the North County are not receiving their fair share of Government spending. Currently the Government allocates €4m out of a total

budget of €68m, and this despite the fact that we had one of the highest population increases in the country according to the 2011 census figures. Enough is enough - we demand our fair share.” “During the recent local election campaign, one issue that came up again and again on the doorsteps was the lack of social housing provision in Balbriggan. I didn’t make any empty promises, but pledged myself to campaign for a solution based on fairness. To this end, I have tabled a motion calling on the Council to explain how they are preparing to address the housing crisis in the Balbriggan area, I hope that all the councillors from Balbriggan will support this motion,” he concluded.

Locals Urged To Beware Of Fake Bank Notes A concerned local resident has contacted the County Leader after being the recipient of a fake €20 in the Swords area, and wants to urge others to be on the look out for similar notes. Resident, Francis Browne who lives in Balbriggan, said he received the fake note in a restaurant in Swords, and only became aware of it much later, when a barman in Balbriggan pointed the forgery out to him. “It’s easy to look over a fake note and think it is a real one, as many of the fakes are very well done,” he said. “But I wanted to let others know about this, so that they are aware that there could be a few fake notes floating around.” Here are a few tips about how to check your notes to ensure you have the real thing: Special printing makes the ink feel raised or thicker on a real bank note, so the lettering and the value numerals on the front should

feel slightly raised. To feel the raised print, run your finger over this or scratch it gently with your fingernail. Also the bank note paper in a real note consists of pure cotton, and should feel crisp and firm (not limp or waxy). Another tip is that the marks printed in the top corner of the €20 note on both sides, should combine perfectly to form the value numeral on a real note . You can see the complete number when holding the bank note against the light. Alternatively, you can shine an ultraviolet light on the bill. Some little stripes / scratches will appear on the real note when you have done this. If you’re unsure as to whether a note you have is real or fake, locals are advised to bring it to their nearest Garda station.

Smiles make an unimaginable impression on people when they first meet, perhaps the most powerful gesture humans can make. It’s the first thing people notice about you and your personality. They can make all the difference, between appearing as nice and welcoming, or unfriendly and hostile. Smiles can lead to inner happiness, and can also do wonders for your confidence, and happiness, so we should probably do something to help us smile more. Making sure that our smiles don’t betray us, may require us to visit our dentist for repairs to our teeth, the mainstay of a good smile. For people who have dentures, this will mean visiting one of the many fine practitioners here in the North County. For people who

need corrective procedures or braces, a visit to your local orthodontist is a must. The difference they make is remarkable, and can have a wonderful effect on your confidence, which is crucial to that winning smile. Local dental and orthodontic professionals can offer great services at amazingly good prices, which will also put a smile on your face. It is hard to believe sometimes, how much of an impact smiles can have. They are the front to your personality, so flaunt yours with one your proud of. Let’s stop that pouting and start smiling this summer. A visit to your local dentist or orthodontist will go a long way to helping you to regain that great smile. actually got a reputation to uphold. Make sure they reflect us as a friendly nation. It is scientifically proven, smiles release endorphins, the chemical to happiness. Everyone faces difficult times at some point in their life, but even at this point, it’s important to keep on smiling. Even small smiles to ourselves or strangers can make someone feel better. It goes without saying, taking care of our teeth will encourage us to smile more. They pronounce confidence, happiness and positivity. Not only this, but a winning smile can brighten up someone else’s day too. The North County has many professional, qualified and experienced dentists who you can trust to look after your teeth. Whether you’re in need of a new cavity, replacement, braces or just a check up, the massive benefits of visiting your dentist is hugely beneficial. As a nation addicted to tea and coffee, there are downsides to indulging in our favourite drinks, and that is the unfortunate case of teeth staining. Yes, we hate to admit it, and as grimy as it sounds, tea and coffee are probably the main reason our teeth aren’t sparkling white. However, this isn’t something major to worry about, in fact, it’s quite easy to solve. There are many businesses in the North County, for instance beauty stores and dentists, that can whiten your teeth at amazing prices. This is something you may want to consider, if there’s a big event coming up.

Great Praise For Tidy Towns Efforts In Malahide As we are right in the middle of the busy Tidy Towns season, our towns are pulling out all the stops to ensure they shine the brightest, and impress the judges in the national competition. Chairperson of Malahide Tidy Towns Gerry Rafferty, has noticed the work gone into the busy coastal town in particular, and is keen to thank and praise all the volunteers for their hard work. “Having been away for the past few weeks, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for

the hard work that has been undertaken in Malahide,” he told the County Leader. “Driving through the town I took great pride is seeing shop fronts painted, hanging baskets and window boxes in bloom, along with the extensive painting of railings, bins and so on - It seems we may even be winning the war on graffiti! The business community have pulled out all the stops this year with bright clean shop fronts and baskets. All approach roads are looking great giving a great first impression as visitors

enter the town. We are all so proud to be involved in making the village beautiful,” he said, happily. “The many residential areas in the town have also been hard at work and all involved should be very proud of the results. I would like to thank the clubs and associations for their support with the upkeep to their clubs,” he continued. “The County Council have also been a great asset to us with maintaining the beautiful castle and grounds and the village.” “Our committee has grown this year, and as always, if anyone would like to help us in any way we would welcome you with open arms. Once again, this is just a big thank you for all the great effort made. The town of Malahide looks great and we are all looking forward to Tidy Towns adjudication in September,” he concluded.

Locals around the North County have been enjoying a dip in many of our rivers and beaches during the recent sunny weather. What most swimmers don’t know, is the local authority must designate official bathing areas in their area every year, so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and their level of use. To help them with

this process, the County Council are now asking people who swim at beaches, lakes and rivers, to tell them if they think they should maintain existing designated bathing waters designations, or give a new official bathing area designation to areas that are commonly used for swimming but not designated at the moment. Under

European and Irish law, both City and County Councils must identify bathing waters each year, so that these areas can be monitored to ensure they meet stringent micro biological water quality standards. These laws also require that the Council prepares detailed descriptions or profiles for each of the designated bathing water sites

Councillor Darragh Butler is pictured with Seatown Villas, Swords resident, Paddy Gerrard at the 'Caution Children' sign that has fallen down and is a trip hazard. Malahide Residents Urged To Be Wary Of Door Salesmen Local gardai have issued a letter of warning to all residents in the M a l a h i d e , Portmarnock and Kinsealy areas,

urging them to be wary of unscrupulous door to door salesmen and tradesmen recently active in those areas. Sgt Austin Cox from

Malahide Garda Station told the County Leader: “Gardai at Malahide wish to caution residents about dealing with rogue traders

and door to door sales men in the area. If you are approached at your door or are concerned by any person in your area you consider suspicious please ring Malahide Garda Station,” he said. “If possible note description and clothes of the persons involved together with the registration number and direction of travel of any vehicles they may be using.” To this end, residents are also advised not to admit anybody to their homes or business if they are not certain of their bona fides. “We would urge all residents to request and check any Identity or business cards produced with the issuing authority,” he continued. “Do not, if possible, deal in cash and never pay for work in advance of completion. It is also a good idea to get more than one estimate for any work to be carried out. Please ensure your home is protected by a properly fitted and serviced alarm.”

Determined Reilly Still In Cabinet Continued from page 1 Internal government documents showed that Swords and Balbriggan were only added to the list of towns being considered for primary care centres, on the night before the list was released to the public. At the time, Taoiseach Enda Kenny denied that Minister Reilly had construed the list, saying he “had no function whatsoever in selecting sites from Primary Care centres, as distinct from locations.” The upshot of this, is that 80 permanent local jobs will be created by this decision, and despite the controversy, many in the locality see this as a very positive intervention by Dr Reilly and one that was badly needed. In his almost three and a half years as Minister for Health, Dr Reilly has been a very controversial figure, most notably over his handling of the medical card fiasco, and his, what has been described as, ham fisted efforts to redress the situation. There were, however, some highlights during his tenure and he was very active in bringing new, cutting edge legislation before Government. In this time, he

tacked the issue of a National Children’s Hospital, which many believe had been long fingered by the previous administration. However, the plan for the long awaited National Children’s Hospital on the site of the Mater Hospital. was scuppered, following the decision by An Bord Pleanála to refuse planning permission. Reilly has proven himself unafraid to tackle some very thorny health issues in his time as Minister. He has been praised in many quarters for his acknowledgement that the government needed to legislate for the landmark Supreme Court X case. He has also been very single minded in his attempts to ensure that Ireland will be a tobacco free country in the next ten years. His aim was to introduce plain packaging for cigarette boxes. “The introduction of standardised packaging will remove the final way for tobacco companies to promote their deadly product in Ireland. Cigarette packets will no longer be a mobile advertisement for the tobacco industry,” he declared at the time. Reilly also recently introduced a ban on the use of sunbeds by people under 18 years of age, which will take effect, with the signing into law of the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014. He also attempted to handle the issue of consultants’ pay, and is credited with bringing waiting lists in hospitals, to a more acceptable level, even though trolley occupancy in hospitals, does not seem to have improved in this time. Another important intervention of his, was when he included the establishment of an ex-gratia Dr Reilly is pictured as he officially launched the Nifti bus service to Beaumont Hospital, scheme for women, who underwent the procedure which took place at Skerries Community Centre on 12th July last year of symphysiotomy. The Government recognised the pain and suffering that many of the women who underwent this barbaric procedure. At the height of its use in Dublin, from the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s when it went into decline. It was carried out on around 1,500 women, about 350 of whom are still alive. Upon taking up the Health portfolio, he promised to radically overhaul the delivery of health services in Ireland during his term in office. As part of this, he pledged to abolish the HSE, by incrementally reducing its involvement in the delivery of services, following much criticism of the organisation. He started that by asking the board to resign and then appointed a new board with more health professionals on it, ultimately leading to the resignation of Dr. James Reilly is pictured with Peter McDonagh and Chief Executive, Cathal Magee. Barry Kane at an exhibition of art by students from St. Whilst most people will not be surprised at the Michael's House removal of Dr Reilly from his position, it must be said that the Health ministry is, by far, the most demanding and gruelling of all government posts. It’s little wonder that one former health minister, Brian Cowen, once referred to the Department of Health as ‘Angola’, because it is full of unexploded mines. Bearing this in mind, we must give Reilly credit for the brave legislation he introduced, rather than to focus on the unpopThen Fine Gael Health Spokesperson, Dr James Reilly, is pictured with Seanad Health ular hard decisions he Spokesperson, Senator Frances Fitzgerald, and Catherine Byrne TD, on a visit to Our had to make, due in the Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin. main, to budget cuts to

He has been a TD for the Dublin North constituency, since the 2007 general election. He has always been passionate about health issues, and he said on numerous occasions, that the possibility of becoming Minister for Health was the reason he entered politics in the first place. He was president of the Irish Medical Organisation, prior to his election and he was appointed as party spokesperson on Health in 2007, and promoted to Deputy Leader in a reshuffle in July 2010. Dr Reilly has worked as a GP in the North County area for over 25 years, with surgeries formerly in Lusk and Donabate.

Advertising Feature

All eyes turn to your garden at this time of year, and if you want yours to stand out from all the rest, a pond or water feature is the ideal way to do this. Water features have become more and more popular over the years, and such a feature adds a real touch of elegance to your garden surroundings. There are many different ways one can add a water feature to uplift a garden, and adding a pond, for example, will certainly do this. It’s always best to call in the professionals if you do decide to go with this water feature, as they will be able to advise you of the size and style to go for, and all

for a reasonable price. The North County of course contains such experts who will be able to cater for your every need, and ensure that your pond or water feature looks truly stunning. In terms of the maintenance side of things, if you’re unsure of how you might maintain your pond, always ask the experts what size would be the best to go for. If you’re still uncertain even so, you can always go for a smaller water feature and expand it later on. In terms of practical considerations for the pond, you should try to site yours on a level site, or at the bottom of a sloping garden and away from trees

(so that leaves don’t fall into the water, and decay, and dirty the water - use a net across your pond if you can’t avoid trees). As always, health and safety is of paramount concern if you have any water feature installed and have little ones who will be running around, choose a water feature with no standing water or fit a pond with a sturdy grille over the top, for safety, or a secure fence all around. Also, you can freshen the look of your garden, just by simply pulling out a few weeds from the paving and flower beds. Unfortunately, in the summer, your lawn can

become high maintenance, with it needing a trim every two weeks. However, it is a good excuse to spend some time out in the sun. Sprinkle some grass seeds onto the lawn, this will layer it with a fresh coat, making the lawn look a whole lot healthier. Take this time to decide if your lawn requires levelling, and for other big garden projects, you may need some professional , local landscapers. If there are only small areas that need levelling, you may be able to just use sand, and allow the lawn time to grow through. It’s not too late to start planting some flower bulbs. The North County boasts an array of lovely garden

centres, where the workers will be more than happy to share their expertise on flower suggestions and care. You may decide you want to plant your flowers this summer, so they are ready to sprout next year. Trees and shrubs are good, all year round plants. They still add life to your garden, and are relatively low maintenance. Dress the trees in decorative, clay pots, these will make a great statement piece in your garden. In

terms of your home, as the summer’s here, there’s no longer a need for drab colours and heavy materials. Here is a season where your surroundings should be light and breezy to reflect the summer. A popular tip is to replace those heavy winter curtains for lighter, thinner ones. Embrace the sun, it’s not everyday we have it. In fact, we most probably spend a third of the year in the dark and cold, a little morning sunshine and late nights can’t harm

us. Summer’s all about the light colours, and allowing more light into the house will bring summer indoors too. Not only this, but it will also make your rooms appear larger and more spacious. Appearing to have more space reflects the outdoor air and breeze, preparing you for the summer. The living room should be the most vibrant, lively room in the house, filled with family members, so decorate your living room to reflect this. There’s no

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

Patience has never been your strength, but developments force you to either slow down or turn things over to others. While initially annoying, you will become wholeheartedly involved - and delight with the results.

Capricorn

Jun 21 - Jul 22

Your reaction to the bad behaviour of others depends more on the nature of the damage that they’ve done than how much they’ve upset you. What’s tricky, however, is that you want to be direct but not alienate them.

Sep 23 - Oct 22

Tackle all unexpected twists that will arise this week one by one, and you soon reduce them to manageable tasks. Better yet, conquering them banishes worries that have been both persistent and worrying.

May 21 - Jun 20

If ever there was a time when addressing issues both swiftly and with uncompromising clarity was vital, it’s during this week. The difficulty, however, is that you’re uncertain about your priorities and past decisions.

Aug 24 - Sep 22

The most important thing for you to keep in mind during this week is that most of what’s involved is nothing more than opinion. If you start to justify yourself to other you could lose your perspective. Stick to your views.

Apr 21 - May 20

Judge this week by its unfair dilemmas, and you’ll decide it is a total write-off. Indications are that you’re blamed for problems not of your making, and others speak out of turn. Note all for future reference.

Gemini

Virgo

The more direct you are about both your desires and your concerns, the better. In some cases, you’re concerned that such bluntness would annoy others. However, their reactions make it clear that they take you seriously.

Mar 21 - Apr 20

Since you can’t avoid the minefield of conflicts indicated, you may as well use the opportunity to tackle persistent issues. However, do bear in mind that even ordinary situations could become confused right now.

Jul 23 - Aug 23

As far as you’re concerned, the faster you settle misunderstandings - the better. However, hastily made arrangements could lead to more misunderstandings - and that is what you don’t want right now.

Feb 19 - Mar 20

View this week as preparation for the extraordinary opportunities that will come at the month’s close, and you can even feel positive about challenging encounters. Time prepare the mind and body for what is to come.

Jan 20 - Feb 18

Opting out of conflicts won’t be easy. You want to defend others and stand up when circumstances become unfair. However, this is a week when even your most straightforward statements could be misunderstood.

Recent events were both unsettling and exciting, forcing you to neglect matters from finances to issues with loved ones. But these can no longer be ignored, and you’ll find yourself having to deal with the consequences.

Local Authority To Combat Great Fun Day For Dog Fouling Issue County Mayor, Cllr. Mags Murray joined the three other Dublin mayors to launch a summer campaign to combat dog fouling. Following the launch last year, this campaign again shows how committed the four authorities are to working together to address the dog fouling problem which local affects streets, parks and open spaces across the North County. This campaign will see new ‘Bin the Poo’ signs put up in public spaces around the locality to highlight the responsibility of dog owners to clean up after their dogs and remind them to ‘leave only paw prints’. The four authorities expect to erect 3,000 signs over the course of the year. Each local authority will also broadcast an audio message at two public locations asking dog owners to dispose of their dog waste responsibly, following a successfully trial earlier this year by the County Council. “This summer, our beautiful parks and beaches will be very busy, so this is an ideal time to remind dog owners and walkers that they must clean up after their dog,” said the mayor. She was also keen to stress the importance of the role the local public have in reporting dog fouling to help the Council issue more fines. “Most people agree that awareness campaigns and better signs will have a greater impact on changing dog owners behaviour but we are still keen to issue fines when we can. We encourage members of the public to call with as much information to identify incidents of dog fouling in public areas,” she concluded.

Balbriggan Cricket Club Balbriggan Cricket Club held a family fun day last weekend to raise funds for the club to enable them to upgrade equipment and facilities. David Harper was member of the club all of his life until his untimely death in 2011. The Harper family would like to say a big thank you to all who attended the event and although the weather turned bad, they hoped everyone enjoyed the day.
