15% Reduction After a robust debate at a Council meeting last week, councillors voted to cut the Local Property Tax (LPT) by 15 per cent next year. The 15 per cent was the maximum reduction allowed. Twenty four out of 25 of our local councillors from the Balbriggan, Swords and Malahide electoral areas were present at the meeting, (Independent councillor, Anne Devitt was absent). Out of the 24 present, 18 from the Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein parties and some Independents voted for the full 15 per cent reduction, whilst six councillors from Labour, the Green Party and other Independents), voted for a 10 per cent reduction. According to Swords councillor, Joe

By Jennifer McShane Newman (NP), it was hugely important that the full 15 per cent reduction was voted in, so “that the local people see that they have councillors working in their interest.” “Local homeowners have been hit so

hard over all the charges,” Newman said. “People have told me personally how they are struggling because of the LPT, I got a real sense of the true upset and despair that they were feeling, and I want to help alleviate that.” “It’s important that they, not only have a bit of relief from the charges, which the reduction should give them, but so that they really can see that some of their elected representatives are actively working towards change for the better, and that we are not simply just accepting

what is being handed out to us,” he explained. The Fianna Fail party, who hold majority in the County Council, have long spearheaded the LPT campaign and councillor, Darragh Butler told the County Leader that all members were also strongly in favour of the full 15 per cent reduction from the beginning. “Fianna Fáil gave a commitment to the electorate in the North County prior to the local elections, that we would seek a full reduction, to in some small way alleviate the tax burden that this Government has put

The Catherine Lawlor School of Art 12th Annual Art Exhibition, which was recently held in Malahide Tennis Club, was a great success and Catherine was very proud of all her students’ work. The exhibition was officially opened by local artist, Una Sealy on the Friday night and the group had a huge turnout over the weekend. There were 49 students exhibiting 129 paintings in total. During the exhibition they sold 19 paintings and were delighted to have raised €2,000 for ChildVision in Drumcondra. Catherine would like to thank all those who attended and supported the exhibition including the students who exhibited paintings, the committee, helpers, artist Una Sealy and all those who donated prizes for their raffle.

Skerries Harps Are Pink Laces Champions Dublin Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) announced recently that Skerries Harps were the proud winners of the Dublin LGFA - Pink Laces competition. The Skerries club sold the highest number of Breast Cancer Ireland pink laces in a competition, which was open to all Dublin LGFA clubs. Skerries Harps reward for their fund raising efforts, was a coaching session with members of the Dublin Senior panel. Dubs quartet of Lyndsey

Davey, Niamh McEvoy, Olivia Leonard and Sarah McCaffrey took time out from their All Ireland final preparations to coach the up and coming stars of Skerries Harps and by all accounts, both the Dubs and the youngsters of Skerries had a ball. Skerries Harps Club Secretary, Chris McConvery said: “On behalf of Skerries Harps, I would appreciate if you could pass on our thanks to Niamh, Olivia, Sarah and of course our own Lyndsey for a

fantastic day. Their approach to the children and to the session was a credit to them and to Ladies Gaelic Football, and I hope they enjoyed the day as much as the players and their mentors did. Their visit made a lasting

impression on our young players, all of whom were thrilled to say they had a training session with senior Dublin players. It was certainly refreshing to see senior players, who are so willing to give something back to their sport and indeed to support a very worthwhile cause.”

Great Day As Swords School Opens Library Thursday last, 25th September was a day to remember for the pupils at Holywell Educate Together National School, Swords. It was the day when the new school library was opened, by TV star and local resident, Marty Whelan. An air of excitement was palpable in the school, as the children sang their hearts out for Marty, as he officially opened the library. He said that the new library was a great way to “fire the imagination of young people, and one that will bring magic to the lives of the children. This is an occasion that the children will remember

forever, as the gift of reading is one of the most important things in a child’s life,” he said. The well stocked library is a treasure house of wonder and knowledge, which has a computerised electronic system, where children can take out and return books, just as in any library. Assistant principal, Imelda Whelan told the County Leader, “When we moved in here, this was just an empty room. Parents contributed by painting murals, based on children’s classic stories. They also fundraised to purchase books. We wanted to create a link between school and home, where parents are encouraged to read books with their children. Our aim is to foster a love of books and reading and today is a big step in that direction,” she said.

The support I received when making this film was incredible, from the actors who gave their services for free, to everyone associated with the production. The only people we had to pay were the camera and sound men. “I had to get the right actors for the parts, as I could see the characters in my mind. I

picked Dave Duffy for one of the parts, as I knew he was the ideal person for it. Some of the filming took place in and around Swords,” he said. Brian is hopeful that

It is a story of love, fuelled by a fierce determination to find out the truth. The film is called ‘Life’s Shadows’ and it had it’s first viewing upstairs in the Star pub in Swords on Tuesday, 23rd September last. A large crowd, including actors and film crew, and invited guest turned up on the night. This is a low budget film, where the actors all gave their services for free. Rush Woman Cooks Up A Storm A local woman from Rush was featured on cookery show ‘Angeline’s Home Cooks’, on TV3 last week. In each episode, there are two home cooks who share their recipes with two noncooks. Rush woman Caroline was one of the ‘non cooks’ who wanted to improve her skill set, cooking skills and her confidence. Caroline lives in Rush with her husband, Alan and her daughter, Isabel. She also spends a lot of her time as a full-time carer for her parents in Santry and would love to be able to cook some delicious meals for her parents. Caroline said she has no confidence when it comes to cooking. “I once put a casserole in the oven with a plastic lid on top of it! The food burnt and the plastic melted everywhere,” she told the County Leader. She also said that she once

failed to make pancakes, even though she used Betty Crockers pancake mix! The local lady explained that she tends to overcook things, because she panics things will be undercooked. She went on to say that the night before she came to Angeline’s Home Cooks, she cooked frozen burgers for her husband and Isabel.

Both cut into them and they were raw. Her husband said Angeline’s Home Cooks “couldn’t have come quick enough!” In the programme, Caroline was joined by skilled home cooks, Rory Kelly and Sheila McNeice, who gave her two recipes to recreate at home so that with practice, she could grow more confidant in the kitchen.

Two prizes for Balbriggan and one for Skerries made for a very successful Allotment Awards event for our North County towns. Celebrating the best allotments in Ireland, these annual awards were presented at a ceremony in the RDS last week. Best new entry went to Barbara Doyle from Balbriggan, who only started her allotment six months ago and yet her progress has been in the words of the judges ‘exceptional and an example to all’. Latvian native, Laima Ruka was judged to be the third best allotment gardener for her

County Council plot in Skerries. Her allotment was not only abundant with fruit and vegetables, but judges noted that she found it a great way to meet people and de-stress – one of the many benefits of allotments that judges were also looking out for. A certificate of merit was also presented to Balbriggan allotments, another County Council scheme; the Council were awarded a prize for their excellent management of over 140 plots. Allotment gardens were rated on design of their plot, crop management, weeding, neatness and environmental awareness. Providers of allotments were judged on community involvement, services provided, overall impression of site, quality of crops and cultivation on their site, as well as their plan on how to use the top prize of €1000.

The appointment of Donald Tusk as President of the European Commission, sees Ewa Kopacz become the second female Polish Prime Minister. She has promoted Schelyna, the speaker of Parliament to Foreign Minister ; this despite his limited experience in the area. A dissatisfied Schelyna, who was Tusk’s main opponent within the Civic Platform, is calling for an internal party leadership election. The real test of Kopacz’s capacity to successfully lead them, is in November when local elections are to be held. The Catalan Parliament presses ahead with their intended “consultation” on independence for the region. This will force the Spanish Government into court to endeavour to prevent the process taking place. Should the “consultation” proceed, it will be interesting to see if it is any more successful than Scotland’s attempt to break away from the UK. The newly elected Minister-President of the Flemish Parliament has expressed the view

that Europe is too big, and is seeking greater subsidiarity, stating that the EU’s urge to regulate everything must be controlled. Ukrainian separatist are proposing elections later this year to provide legitimacy to their cause. President Poroshenko pulled back the Ukrainian forces, creating a 30km buffer zone as agreed with the separatists, which seemed to signal an acceptance of the ceding of the eastern segment of the country. He also set out a programme of reform last week to prepare the country to make an application for EU membership in 2020. While President Putin wrote to the EU warning that if the current Ukraine-EU association agreement is actioned, that Russia’s immediate retaliatory measures will commence. Parliament commences the new Commissioner hearings, as Nessa Childers has Big Phil clearly in her sights, but most pundits are of the view that, while he may have an uncomfortable couple of hours at the hands of MEPs, there is little doubt but that he will survive. The main focus will be on Timmermans, who is Juncker’s first Vice President. As some MEPs are critical of the proposed reorganisation of the Commission, particularly in areas of healthcare and the environment with the Industry Commissioner taking responsibility for pharmaceutical policy, while the environment seems to have suffered a down grade. This hearing, which is open to all MEPs, will provide the platform to allow members the opportunity to show their displeasure.

Relief At Decision To Retain Local Court Services SPECIAL REPORT

The great news that the District Court service is being retained in the North County, with Swords and Balbriggan courthouses to remain open, has been given a broad welcome locally. It also means that the District Court Office in Swords will also be retained. Earlier this year, there was a very real possibility that court cases would have been heard in the city centre, or in

Dublin Airport Wins Major Global Award Dublin Airport has won a major global marketing award at the World Routes 2014 conference in Chicago. Dublin Airport won the World Routes Award for airports that handle between 20 million and 50 million passengers per year. The awards, which are for excellence in marketing by airports, are voted exclusively by airlines worldwide and are divided into just four categories based on airport size. Dublin Airport defeated the other shortlisted airports nominated in the 20-50 million passengers per year category Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Munich and Seattle Tacoma – to win the award. “This is a fantastic achievement,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison. “We’re delighted to have been named the best airport in the world for aviation marketing for airports handling 2050 million passengers per year.” Harrison added that winning the award was “recognition of Dublin Airport’s marketing team’s professionalism and ingenuity to help deliver seven per cent passenger growth this year, with growth from all airline types and all market sectors.” Almost 14.6 million passengers used Dublin Airport in the first months of this year, which is a seven per cent increase on the same period in 2013. So far this year, 21 new services have been launched at Dublin, including new long-haul routes to San Francisco, Toronto and St John’s Newfoundland and new short-haul services to a range of continental European and British destinations.

far flung places, in a bid to have justice served. Many locals believe that shutting both of these courthouses would have had a negative impact on the justice system as a whole and would have adversely affected the local communities of Swords and Balbriggan. This news will be particularly welcomed by victims of domestic violence, where legislation allows a person, who is being beaten, abused or threatened by a partner, or someone he/she has resided with for a period of six months, to seek a protection or barring order. Had the courts in Balbriggan and Swords been closed down, and this service removed from the local area, victims of abuse would have been placed in great danger. The retention of this vital service means that, if a person is being beaten the previous night, they may only have a window of an hour or two to get an order. Now they can continue to go down to the District Court office in Swords, and appear before a judge an hour later here in Swords. This is effective and quick and protects people in that position. Many people trying to access city centre courts, or Blanchardstown, would have to take two buses, at significant expense, and with little or no knowledge of where to go. Many believe that this would have led to people not turning up, and in the case of victims of abuse, they would have been less inclined to travel, which would have presented problems. The fact that Swords and Balbriggan have been identified as areas of exponential growth means that more services are needed, not less. The benefits of the retention of the courts is expected to have a beneficial

impact on the local economy in both towns, with increased footfall a welcome addition. The news has been warmly welcomed by the legal profession in the North County, where local solicitors have given the developments the thumbs up. Liam Fitzgerald from Liam R. Fitzgerald Solicitors, Main Street, Lusk told the County Leader, “In theory, the law should be applied consistently across the state. Thus it should not make a difference if a person goes before a court in Balbriggan or Blanchardstown. However, what is important is access to justice. There is a saying “Justice and the Law are miles apart”. Thus adding more miles to the Law only make Justice even further away,” he said. Laura Shannon, from Shannon Solicitors in Swords is delighted with the Courts Service decision to retain the courts in Swords and Balbriggan. She said, “The decision would be a great relief to all users of the Courts in the Dublin area, in particular Family Law users will not now have to go to the crowded courts in Dolphin House in Dublin City Centre, where people all over Dublin would have been using the cramped facilities, with serious delays and adjournments.” She also thanked the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association, the North County Leader and the local councillors and TDs in the North County, for passing motions condemning the move, and lobbying the Court Service on behalf of the people of Fingal. Maureen Black of MP Black & Co Solicitors in Malahide said, “We’re delighted with the decision to reverse the closures. It made no economic sense. All it would have done was to increase pressure on the Gardai. There is not a good transport service to Blanchardstown, which means it would have been difficult to get witnesses to court. We’re delighted that a system that has served us so well, has been retained. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. There was a lot of lobbying done by the legal profession, and we’re happy that our voice was heard,” she said. Similarly, Fiona Kelly F M Kelly & Company Solicitors, Church Street, Skerries was very happy with the outcome. “We

welcome the decision to ensure that our local courts remain open. For the general public, access to justice is essential and the demographics of North County Dublin are such that the proposed closure would have significantly impinged upon an individual’s access to justice, be they victims of crime, claimants in civil and or family proceedings, or otherwise,” she said. Justine O’Connor of Con O’Connor & Co, Balbriggan said, “We are delighted that the planned proposal for the closure of the local Courts has now been aban-

15

doned. Had it gone ahead, it would have been a huge setback for Balbriggan and Swords. Congratulations to all those, who worked so vigourously to ensure that Balbriggan and Swords retained operative courthouses,” she said. Devaney & Partners Solicitors in Malahide were another company to fully back the decision to keep the courthouses open in Swords and Balbriggan. They said, “We are delighted with the news last week, that the courts were being retained in the North County. It makes complete sense.”

After a long day at work, its important that entering your home makes you feel calm and relaxed. You want to feel solace and comfort upon returning home. So many homeowners allow the entrance to their homes to become overgrown and unkempt. You may not see it from inside your home, but it’s the very first thing you see upon arriving back, so always make your front exterior and garden a pleasant sight rather than an eyesore. A beautiful new front door will improve the look of your home’s exterior immediately. Getting rid of and replacing your tatty, old front door will make coming home a dream rather than a nightmare. Something as simple as painting your current one could have

this affect, so chose a stunning midnight blue or emerald green and attach brushed-nickel address numbers on to it. You can paint your door yourself, so start by removing it and laying it flat on to an area covered with a protective sheet. Next, lightly sand the entire door with fine grit sandpaper and apply your chosen paint colour using rollers, as they will minimise runs and stroke marks. Use a brush to reach all crevices and you’re done! Flowers are also a great way of improving the way you feel about coming home. Hanging baskets are very easy to maintain and are a perfect way to frame your freshly painted, new front door. It’s a good idea to gather recommendations from one of North County’s local stores on which plants will thrive in your area. Also, try planting flowers around your garden path. This will make walking along it an absolute treat and help you arrive to your front door with a spring in your step.

your current residence. Try fixing a large mirror up in a smaller room. This will make the space appear larger and bounce around any light coming in. Keep all large furniture light and bright making the space around it seem spacious. You can always add a splash of colour with cushions and throws if you choose to. A very busy room will seem smaller so ensuring the tones and colour schemes are neutral can help make the space feel tidy and bigger. Pale walls will also make the walls seem further away. Remember, you can always add texture through accessories but steer clear of heavy curtains as they will create a cramped environment.

Bathrooms While the bathroom can be one of the most expensive rooms to improve, there are several quick changes you can make that will make an amazing difference. Something as simple as removing unnecessary items from your bathroom counter can make the room appear less overcrowded, so get rid of the old deodorant can that’s been sitting around for months. Instead, replace it with a decorative vase or a pretty soap dispenser. You can pick up any of these items at any of of the local home stores around the North County. Cracked tiles can also make the whole room seem scruffy, so replace any that you have in your bathroom. This can be done extremely cheaply and could even be attempted yourself. However, patience is required so take your time and don’t rush the job.

The local local economy received a major shot in the arm, with the news that a home in Skerries has achieved an extraordinary 50 per cent over the guide price quoted at auction. This will be seen by many as a really good news story for the local economy, and for Skerries in particular. The exceptional price achieved for The Old Rectory, 1 Holmpatrick Terrace in the town, was €1.5 million, which is 50 per cent over the guide price quoted by auction-

eers, Lisney. The house is a four bedroomed Victorian house, which extends to 290 square metres over three levels and stands on a 0.37 acre site, which has planning permission for a second detached house. This development is set to have a very positive impact on the local economy, with the resultant boost in confidence, and is yet another indication that the North County is one of the most desirable places to live in the entire country.

The Essex native, who got his big break when a friend entered him in a Richard & Judy modelling competition, has been working with the department store for several years. He became a household name after he featured in Dolce and Gabbana’s Light Blue fragrance ad in 2007, and is considered one of the most influential males in British Fashion.

15% Reduction Continued from page 1 did so as they felt some funds should be put aside to help alleviate the current housing crisis around the North County, but it was soon discovered that this wouldn’t make a significant difference. “We basically found that if we voted in a 10 per cent reduction, instead of the full 15, it would only leave us with an excess of oneand-a-half million, which wasn’t going to make much difference and solve the housing problems, and so the majority vote for the full reduction was won,” he said. For local councillor, Justin Sinnott (NP), this was also one of the reasons he wanted the full 15 per cent LPT cut. “While the housing was a valuable argument, I could see that we weren’t going to make a significant impact on that, even if we voted for less that the 15 per cent cut,” he said. He also explained that the Chief Executive of the

County Council, Paul Reid’s alternative plan - to have the 15 per cent LPT cuts spread over a five year period (3 per cent per year over 5 years) had a particular problem for him. “Given that we would have had extra funds to put into extra projects had we voted for a 3 per cent cut over the 5 year period, the problem I had with that is, who decides which projects get preference for funding? How am I suppose to tell people based in say the South end of the region, that we didn’t cut your LPT because the funds are going into for example, a project in the North

end of the region? To me, it doesn’t seem fair that some projects in certain areas of the locality would get preference over others,” Sinnott explained. Nevertheless, the Chief Executive will no doubt be disappointed with 15 per cent reduction, as he was keen to have his alternative LPT plan passed. At the meeting, Reid outlined that the LPT cuts spread over five years would “leave the Council with a significant amount of funds they had never had before to invest in key community projects, such as Swords Castle.”

Horticultural Show For Balbriggan Group The Balbriggan Horticultural Society’s grand finale of the year is their Annual Horticultural Show, which took place in Balbriggan Community College recently. The show never

fails to impress with a large array of vegetables, flowers, photos, jams and displays on show. The Dalia section was a welcome sight on entry to the show and it certainly gave visitors a very high standard to aspire to in their own gardens.

The 1916 Diaries Of An Irish Rebel And A British Soldier - A Review ‘The 1916 Diaries Of An Irish Rebel And A British Soldier’ presents the reader with two unique accounts from two different individuals who were involved in separate sides of the Easter Rising rebellion in April 1916. Author Mick O’Farrell’s novel centres on two unpublished diaries, written by two men fighting on the streets of Dublin in 1916. On one side is Irish Volunteer, Seosamh de Brún and on the opposite side of the battle, is British soldier, C o m p a n y Sergeant Major, Samuel Lomas. What differentiates this novel from others published on the same topic, is that this is one of the first published works to contain personal accounts of their own individual experiences - both mundane and extraordinary - during 1916. It’s important to note that the book is not a detailed, full account of the Easter Rising in

By Jennifer McShane 1916, but instead, a tightly focused look at various events as they happened to two individuals deeply involved in the rebellion, fighting on opposite sides of the fence.

This is what makes the novel a joy to read. What we get are two very different, personal accounts providing us with a fresh look at one of the most infamous battles in Irish history, rather than simply, a historical timeline of events. We start by getting the personal diary of Irish Volunteer, Seosamh de Brún. This is an interesting account to

start off with, as we are given the chance to see what the life of an ‘ordinary’ volunteer was like during Easter week. Born on July 3rd, 1883, de Brún lived on Dublin’s Northside. He carried his ‘midget’ diary (it was no more than pocket size), with him from late 1915 to Saturday, 29th April 1916 and not only do we get to glimpse into the mindset of a volunteer who “did not expect to be involved in Revolution....so suddenly,” we also are given details of his guard duties. In one particularly memorable entry, he writes of how he was asked to cycle to help de Valera, during which a sniper killed one of the other cyclists. We also get the other, more mundane secondary details of his life circumstances. All of these details results in a truly memorable account of the life of an Irish Volunteer during a time of battle. Moving onto the second account of British soldier Samuel

Lomas. This too provides fascinating insight into the life of a soldier during a time of war. Born in Tideswell in England in November 1879, Lomas was 36 when he arrived in Dublin, on Tuesday April 25th 1916. It was over the next 14 days that he wrote his personal take on the events that followed, in which he built barricades across important streets, and led storming parties to break into buildings. Then there are the darker accounts, in which he was involved in the executions of key figures in the rising; Pádraig Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh and Tom Clarke. In one entry, he describes how Pearse “whistled as he came out of his cell.” Overall, this novel is a must read. For those that are fans of this era of Irish history, this will give you fresh details on the battle that occurred during Easter week, and for those that don’t know much about it, the book will provide you with a unique insight into two men that were right in the centre of the fighting.
