With the good news that the economy is now making a strong recovery, and the news that the recent Exchequer returns are higher than expected, consumer confidence is starting to gather momentum. People are now beginning to spend again after years of austerity. As a nation, we always look forward to the New Year Sales, and the good news means that we are in a better position to avail of the many wonderful offers in our excellent shops, right across the county. We now deserve a little treat for ourselves. There’s nothing that we like more than a good bargain, and we are prepared to go the extra mile to secure one. In times past, this meant undertaking the arduous journey into the city, but not anymore. The North County has now become one of the most desirable locations, with many of the top retail shops located right here on our doorsteps. As is the tradition, the January sales have always been one of the highlights of the retailing calendar year, and such is the array of fine shops in the North County, there’s no excuse to go elsewhere else, in search of that genuine bargain. Whilst we are all familiar with sales
throughout the year, it’s really the January sales that attract the most attention. The great advantage of shopping local for the January sales, is that you are in a position to build up a relationship with your retailer. This is one of the great advantages of staying local. Often, shop owners and assistants are people who may be known to you, and they can help you choose the best bargains, offer the best advice, and are always available if ever a problem arises. Another good reason for supporting local shops, is that by doing so, you are helping to secure local jobs. Every town in the North County is full of shops offering great value in a range of products. The choice for discerning shoppers has never been better, and now is a great time to avail of these bargains. The pages of this paper are full to the brim with some of the most exciting products on the market, at the most unbelievable value imaginable. As with all great bargains, when they’re gone, they’re gone, so remember, you don’t have to move out of your own area to get that dream deal, but don’t delay too much. Enjoy the experience!

JANUARY
January began with our first edition of the County Leader being delivered on 20th of the month. The year produced many interesting events which were to have a profound impact on residents of the North County. The first event of importance of the new year was when International Airlines Group (IAG), made another bid to buy the national airline, Aer Lingus. However, with Ryanair owning 29.8 per cent of Aer Lingus, the takeover was not as
smooth as it could have been. On the positive side, news that aviation analysts predicted that Aer Lingus would be wise to take up IAG’s offer A Swords man, Lorcan Farrelly released a new song, which managed to raise €1,600 for the Fr

Pictured here, Alex Stimpson (aged 3) from Swords was on hand to support ‘Bumbleance’ the children’s ambulance service, and plans to increase its fleet from two to five units. Bumbleance units will be fitted out with décor and interactive features needed to entertain and reduce stress on sick children when travelling to and from treatment centres. The ‘child-friendly’ ambulances play an important role in easing the stress on sick children when being brought for treatment, and this is something we want to make available more widely," said Bumbleance founder, Tony Heffernan.

February began with the sale of Aer Lingus dominating the national airwaves and it was clear that there was some resistance to the Government selling it’s 25 per cent share in the company. March began with the news that planning permission had been granted for the construction of a new Lidl Supermarket, located on Dublin Road in Swords, beside the Pinnock Hill roundabout. This included the construction of a two storey, licensed discount food store with ancillary off-license sales, a single storey café and two storey medical centre. Brave little Molly McNally, the six-year-old Balbriggan girl, who had a vital bone marrow transplant operation at Crumlin Childrens Hospital went back home with her family in Balbriggan during March. Balbriggan Community College’s school community came together in April to demonstrate about the lack of sporting, recreational and PE facilities provided by the Department of Education/DDLETB for the school over the past number of years. Other schools in the town have seen PE facilities built or installed over the interim period and this has placed the college, one of the oldest and longest established in the town, at a serious disadvantage. Ryan Corneille (age 15) from Skerries Community College won a major prize at the Student Enterprise Awards National Finals which took place at Croke Park in April, claiming second place in the Intermediate Category. Ryan impressed the judges with his business: ‘Book Snaps’, a book and organisational copy tool, which bounds books and copies together. There was great excitement as every school in North County Dublin was presented with a copy of the Proclamation and a national flag by members of the Defence Forces during April, which continued throughout the year.

May signalled the beginning of what was to prove a disappointing summer weatherwise. The good news for Scoil Moibhi at Milverton in Skerries was that it was one of seven schools in the North County to benefit from the Summer Works Scheme. This scheme is aimed to improve a number of school buildings across the North Dublin area. The school is particularly close to Minister for Children, Dr James Reilly, who paid them a surprise visit. Donabate man, Paul Gorman and his son, Sam Baker Gorman (14) returned from a hiking expedition to Nepal, where they had a narrow escape from serious injury. They returned days before the beautiful Himalayan country was devastated by an earthquake, which left over 7,000 people dead. The sale of 100 yearold Swords pub, ‘The Star’ was one of the main stories in May. One of the most readily identifiable businesses in Swords, M.R. Taylors, better known as ‘The Star’ on Swords Main Street went up for sale on the instructions of the Taylor family, who have traded successfully from the premises for over 100 years. People from Swords and afar have fond memories of times spent socialising with friends and family in this iconic pub. Talented Balbriggan girl Hannah Hawkshaw gave a starry performance at the Gibraltar International Song Festival competition, coming in third place. Hannah spent months preparing for this
event, and it was her first time entering a competition for songwriters. There was great news for parents and schoolgoers in Malahide, with the news that a site had been selected for Malahide/ Portmarnock Educate Together primary school. Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) confirmed exclusively to the County Leader that it was his understanding that the site of the Old Rugby Club on the Back Road, Malahide is likely to be the future home of the Malahide/ Portmarnock Educate Together primary school. A story broke in May about concerns over the HPV vaccine, which was given to teenage girls to counter cervical cancer. A number of families in the North County claim that their daughters have experienced life changing effects since being injected with the vaccine in their first year at secondary school. A support group was been set up by parents of teenage girls, who are claimed to have have developed serious health problems since entering secondary school.

In political news it was decided that Dr. James Reilly TD and Alan Farrell TD would represent Fine Gael in the constituency of Dublin Fingal in the next General Election. The candidates were selected by members of the party at a convention held in the Grand Hotel in Malahide. What was to be one in a long line of bad news stories associated with the Irish
health care system, it emerged in June that 33 acute surgical beds at Beaumont Hospital were to be shut down with immediate effect. The decision threw the hospital into further crisis and added to surgical waiting lists that were already among the highest in the country. Following the closure of Rush Garda station, a new

A massive tourism boost for the North County was announced, when news broke that a major musical event is to be held in the North County next year. Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF), confirmed that the world renowned Irish Pipe Band championships will be held in Malahide Castle in July 2016, with 80 bands from across Ireland, Scotland, Canada, the US and Australia due to travel to the event. News came that Swords Castle was open to the public. At a ceremony held there, County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor cut the ribbon to officially open the Castle, which held the Swords Festival, from 17th to 19th July, with the Swords Archaeofest on Saturday 18th July. Two young Swords lads headed off to Los Angeles to compete in the Special Olympics. While this was a great distinction for the boys, the fact that both of them come from the same estate, Hawthorn Park in Swords is truly remarkable. Emmet Daly (19) and Billy Kane (15) represented their country with pride. Emmet was a key member of the 5-a-side football team, while Billy returned as one of the stars of the entire event, with two gold, three silver and one bronze medal in gymnastics.
Balbriggan and Skerries got in on the act of producing top class sportsmen, when two lads from either town took home impressive World Champion titles at a martial arts event called the World Breaking Association Championships (WBA) in Orlando, Florida. Balbriggan man, Keith Fanning, competed at the revered competition, with his friend and student Ferdia “Macker” McMahon from Skerries. Keith was announced as the Heavyweight Power Foot Champion and Macker was the Lightweight Power Elbow Champion. The much anticipated Rush Harbour Festival kicked off on Friday, 31st July and, as usual, was jam packed with lots of activities for all ages. The official opening featured St Maur’s Pipe Band, followed by an energetic display of drumming from the Japanese drummers.

Building Our Future Together
The Fianna Fail Dublin Fingal Team, left to right, Cllr. Darragh Butler, Cllr. Brian Dennehy, Cllr. Mags Murray, Cllr. Eoghan O'Brien, Cllr. Adrian Henchy & Senator Darragh O'Brien
The Family Home and the Working Family are at the Heart of our Community. Homes & Housing I am totally committed to keeping families in their family homes. There should be no more evictions from family homes. Fianna Fáil has a plan to build 150,000 homes over the next five years, including 80,000 for first-time buyers.
Irish Water We will abolish Irish Water and scrap the Water charges. That’s a promise. Our plan is to fund a 10year programme of capital investment in our water services to bring them up to the international standard they should be at. We oppose the massive Cloghran sewage plant with outflow at Portmar nock. Smaller localised plants are the correct solution to this challenge.
Childcare
Education
Fianna Fáil will introduce a second free pre-school year for children aged 2-3, and give parents a €2,000 tax credit to cover childcare costs. As well as that we will introduce a 30-week maternity leave. We are committed to making additional childcare supports accessible to families of under-3s, including early education and development support.
For the first time we will develop an integrated future plan for all new schools in Fingal in a properly phased manner. Fingal has the youngest and most diverse schoolgoing population of any county in Ireland. We will bring back the Guidance Counsellors who were a huge loss to second-level students. Fianna Fáil will maintain the student grant at third-level.
Health Beaumont A & E needs to be doubled in size to cater for all the demands on it, and we fully back that. We will bring back the Treatment Purchase Fund to guarantee hospital treatment for children waiting for 3 months and for adults waiting for 6 months. We will appoint 500 new therapists and approve 5,000 new Home Care Packages.
Crime It was obvious that crime was going to greatly increase when the number of Gardaí in Dublin North was cut by 152. What a disastrous decision that was. I am totally opposed to any more closure of Garda Stations. It’s a priority, I believe, to restore Garda numbers in Fingal, to restore the 24/7 Garda service to Malahide, to re-open Rush station, and open a new satellite station for Donabate and Portrane.
Airport Pensions I will continue to campaign for and with the hundreds of families in Fingal who have been sold out by this government, which reduced their Airport pension benefits by up to 60%. My commitment to the retired, deferred and active members of the Airport Pension Scheme is total.
Pyrite Pyrite is a sad reality for many homeowners in North Dublin. It has been a long hard struggle working with so many of them to vindicate their rights. I am committed to bringing in a new Pyrite Remediation Scheme because this Government’s scheme is not fit for purpose and has let so many people down. No homeowners, whose insurer will not pay, will be left behind in my proposed scheme. We will place a levy by way of contribution on those responsible.

SEPTEMBER The Autumn brought an end to a disappointing Summer weatherwise, but one person who was far from disappointed was Linda Foley from Donabate. She was chosen as one of three finalists in the Canon Ireland photography contest. The competition was open to amateur photographers around Ireland and aimed at helping budding photographers to take their work to the next level. Linda focused on the scenic views and nature of her local area in Donabate. Another young girl who was brought joy in September was little Molly McNally. August began in spectacular fashion, with Rush Harbour Festival in full swing. There were some exciting events lined up, including a breathtaking Air Show and Parachute Jump on Sunday, 2nd August that rivalled anything, anywhere in the country. The organisers of the Bray Air Show brought a mini version to Rush. The festival concluded with
the Mayor’s Afternoon Tea Dance on Bank Holiday Monday. August also brought good news for Swords GAA Club, Fingalians, who marked the start of a new era for the club. G.A.A. President, Aogán Ó Fearghail, visited the club to open their resurfaced all-weather pitch at their facility in Lawless Memorial Park. The reopening was also attended be local representatives and councillors. A team of volunteers led by community archaeologist, Christine Baker began a month long community excavation at

Swords Castle in August. Swords Castle: Digging History, was the County Council’s first Community
Archaeology project. An exhibition called ‘My Castle’ also took place in Swords Castle that explored what the Castle means to the people of Swords. Musical history was made when 22 year old Lauryn Gaffney from Malahide made waves in the musical theatre world, thanks to the huge success of her original production, ‘Big Shot.’ Lauryn and her talented cast and crew received outstanding critical acclaim after the USA premiere of her Irish musical at the year’s San Diego International Fringe Festival.

Meanwhile, in Portrane, it would be another young girl who was set to make headlines. Eleven-year-old Kate Smart landed the Lucy Crosbie Shield at the Malahide Horticultural Show in the Under 12 section for the sixth year in a row in the Children’s Craft section of the show. The Lucy Crosbie Shield is presented for Children’s Arts and Crafts and is open to children of all ages. What was truly remarkable about Kate’s achievement, was that this is the sixth year in succession that she has won this prize.

fighting the disease. Transplant Team Ireland arrived home from the World Transplant Games in Argentina to Dublin airport during September. The four person team brought with them a haul of 13 medals, including seven gold, four silver and two bronze. Peter Heffernan, from Skerries was one of the stand out performers on the Irish team. Peter received a kidney transplant in 2011 and is a keen swimmer. He won two gold medals, in the 50m backstroke, and 100m backstroke, as well as a bronze medal for the 100m freestyle event in his 50-59 year old age category. It was good news all round for Donabate man, Christy McCann, when he was elected Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland at an general meeting of Scouting Ireland in the RDS. The results of the Tidy Towns competition were released on 28th of the month and once again, our towns excelled. Skerries was top of the pile in the new Midland and East region and increased its total to 321 points, a mere two points behind overall winners Letterkenny. Malahide also secured its gold medal and special mention must be given to Lusk, which achieved its 1st bronze medal in the competition. The month ended on a charitable note, with a fundraiser being held at the Yacht Bar, Loughshinny for well known local man, Tony Spencer. Tony suffered horrific injuries in a freak accident earlier in the year. This has resulted in Tony being paralysed from the neck down.

launch of a programme of special events, including those planned for the North County, as part of Ireland 2016 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. It was not all good news though, when there was widespread local outrage at the news that local man, Graham Lowndes (50), was to be sued by the burglar who had broken into his 82 year old father, Richard’s home at Kilsallaghan in 2012. The burglar, Matthew Fahey, had decided to sue Lowndes for injuries caused after he broke into his father’s home. The North County year that was...
DECEMBER With Christmas Day now out of the way and the New Year almost here, it is drawing ever closer to that time of year when the bitter weather wreaks its relentless havoc on our homes. It’s also a time when all the bills seem to come at once, even though it would admittedly be tight enough simply dedicating any spare pennies after all those Christmas extras. Heating our homes is an expensive undertaking
and many people, particularly the elderly, are forced to cut back on potentially life saving heat because of high costs. Fortunately here in the North County, we have a range of top quality options to choose from, in our efforts to stay warn and healthy. Nobody likes to hear that winter is well on its way, but making the transition to the big chill is much more bearable when your home is a cosy haven.
Carpets Carpets are an undervalued source of heat for the home, in that they retain heat well in their fibres. They are also non slippery, which is safer, especially at a time when wet footwear is expected and puddles form. There is little less comforting, than feet on a cold floor, so at the very least you could always lay out a rug or two. There is a great

Before we knew it, Christmas was upon us and the season of good will and festive cheer was in full swing in the North County. Christmas markets and the switching on of lights dominated the news as most wonderful time of the year came and went. It was good news for local man David Hagan, from Skerries, who, following a competitive recruitment process, was selected by Bord Bia to become a global Bord Bia Origin G r e e n Ambassador. The news that a date had finally been set for the commencement of the build for Metro North was met with delight. The County Leader exclusively confirmed that construction of the project would definitely go ahead, with a definite start date confirmed of 2021. Swords resident, Matt Cullen was selected as Volunteer of the Year at the Volunteer Ireland Awards. Matt emerged victorious from over 31 exceptional volunteers, including three candidates from Dublin. The awards were presented at a special
ceremony in City Hall, Dublin. For 10 years, Matt Cullen has been an invaluable member of the Tidy Towns team in Swords, which culminated in him winning Volunteer of the Year. Two remarkable students from Loreto Secondary School in

Balbriggan jointly won a public speaking competition, which entitled them to represent Dublin in a national public speaking competition. Manny Choudhry and Mia Doran, are both Transition Year students at Loreto. Further accomplishments of the youth of the North County were noted when Localise, a youth and community development organisation visited St
Colmcille’s Girls National School. Thirty five schoolchildren from Localise handed over 60 gift parcels to the local St Vincent de Paul, as part of their Christmas project. They also visited the Holy Family SNS, River Valley where there was huge excitement when pupils handed over, what can only be described as a mountain of food. The event was also organised by Localise, whose members included pupils from Holy Family school. We rounded off the month and the year with a memorial football tournament at Donabate all weather pitch to remember local lad, Shetemi Ayetigbo. Shetemi was a third year student at Donabate Portrane Community College, who tragically lost his life last May, while playing a match for his club, Belvedere FC. Students, teachers, past pupils and members of the Donabate community braved the harsh winds and pouring rain of Storm Desmond, to turn up to remember their much loved friend, Shetemi through what he loved doing the most, playing football.

Extension Of Rural Hospital Bus Link Needed Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has called on the Minister for Transport and the National Transport Authority (NTA) to provide funding for the expansion of the Nifti rural transport programme. This programme brings patients from the North County area to Beaumont Hospital for treatment. “Patients going for treatment in Beaumont Hospital have to take at least two bus trips at the moment,” O’Brien said. “If this service is

Followed by an assessment of transport needs, the extension of the scheme is carried out by the County Council and is one of four suggested new routes. “Nifti already has the buses, so all it will cost is the fuel and wages for drivers,” the Senator concluded.

Inspirational Essay By Donabate Girl A remarkable 10 year old girl from Donabate has scooped a prestigious award for her essay, ‘Someone Loves Me’ promoting positive attitudes towards disability. Minister of State for New Communities, Culture, Equality and Drugs Strategy, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin presented Amelia Hussain, a 6th class pupil from Donabate/Portrane Educate Together National School with a prestigious county award for her inspirational essay. The award was presented at a special ceremony held in Farmleigh House. The awards saw primary school students from around the country arrive at Farmleigh House as part of a national essay competition hosted by the Department of Justice and Equality, to promote positive attitudes towards disability in primary schools. The competition was entitled ‘Someone Like Me’. The students in attendance were shortlisted for their entries, which saw a mix of written and video essays, with many showcasing their own
disabilities or those of their friends and families, all with a common theme of celebration. Minister O’Ríordáin commented, “The primary schools competition is an excellent opportunity for the youngest members of society to have a carefully thought out conversation around disabilities against the backdrop of the classroom.” “Amelia is a thoroughly inspiring winner and her entry was excellent,” said the Minister. The judging panel for the competition included Brent Pope, rugby analyst and author of many children’s books including Woody the Whale, The Wheezing Wolf, Bones, Arnold The Anteater and The Adventures of Herbie. “I was really blown away by the standard of the essays and the story many of them were telling. I absolutely loved Amelia’s entry,” he said. Amelia’s brother Noah, aged 8, was the inspiration for her story. Noah was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Amelia loves how happy and smiley Noah is and wouldn’t change her brother for the world. Noah also attends Donabate/Portrane ETNS. In the school they have a picture of a jigsaw the children made and have a motto to go with it. It says ‘We all stand out but we all fit in.’
