Sigh Of Relief For Lusk As Clonshaugh Site Chosen The decision of the County Council to locate it’s controversial Monster Sewage Plant at Clonshaugh has come as a shock and a relief to residents in the North County, depending on where you live. The decision was made at last evening’s full council meeting at County Hall in Swords. Councillors from the three shortlisted sites, namely Newtowncorduff and Annsbrook, both near Lusk and the third at Clonshaugh, held their collective breaths as the “winner” was announced. In a scene reminiscent of the secrecy of the Oscars. Delight and despair filled the chamber, depending on which area you represented. The fact that the selected site is located 2kms east of Dublin Airport, with the marine outfall pipe north east of Ireland’s Eye, caused concern for councillors from the Malahide/Howth Electoral Ward. Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), while acknowledging that the siting of the plant in Lusk would have a far greater effect than that in Clonshaugh, expressed his disappointment that Clonshaugh was chosen. “It will affect the water bathing quality on the shore

One such councillor was Ken Farrell (Lab), who spoke to the County Leader in the immediate aftermath of the announcement. “I’m relieved that Lusk has not been selected for this Monster Sewage Plant, but I don’t take any delight in the fact that some other area has been burdened with this monstrosity.” He continued, “I believe The Guide Dogs for the Disabled held a collection and Information Day at Millfield Shopping Centre, Balbriggan on Saturday last, 8th June. pointed that the Department of the Environment and the County Council have decided to proceed with this Monster Sewage plant. I am opposed to this plant being located anywhere in the North County. This decision has grave implications for our coastline, our horticultural sector, our fishing industry and the quality of life for all the residents of North County Dublin. Thousands of people have objected to this plant. Our objections have fallen on deaf ears. The Government must listen to the people of the North County,” he concluded. Councillor Tom O’Leary (FG) said, “I am delighted that the concerned communities in Lusk, Rush, Skerries, Loughshinny and the rural areas have been listened to.” “I welcome the announcement that the site will not be located near Lusk and I support the proposed location at Clonshaugh, which is nearer to Dublin city and closer to the existing pipelines and the current output from Dublin city. To consider Lusk as a location was not a runner, it did not make sense from a value for money perspective.” A total of 10,000 submissions were sent into the local authority, mainly from Lusk and it seems that this co-ordinated approach has had the desired effect. Undoubtedly, the scars that heavy trucks rumbling through a pastoral area such as Lusk would bring, would have had a profound effect on tourism, horticulture and quality of life to the area. The general feeling is that Lusk has had to shoulder it’s fair share of unsavoury projects, including the now defunct Nevitt dump and the recently closed Balleally dump. It’s high time that Lusk had a break and this decision will be welcomed by all in the area.

Baby Porpoise Rescued At Portmarnock Beach Local man, Tom Cassidy from Malahide has played a key role in the rescue of a baby porpoise, which had become stranded on Portmarnock beach last week. He told the County Leader, “I was in a wetsuit as I had just completed a triathlon at the weekend and I wanted to get some open water practice in the sea.” “I arrived on the beach, all zipped up and ready to swim when a man mentioned to me that there was, what seemed like a baby dolphin, stranded on the beach and to keep an eye out for it. Then a lady called and pointed to where he was. We went over and I offered to hold him as I could

stay in the water for longer with the wetsuit. The DSPCA and Dolphin Rescue came down to us and the coastguard arrived in a speed boat and we took him a mile out to sea where he was lowered into the water. Big Challenge Ahead For Malahide Sea Scouts The Malahide Sea Scouts are trying to raise €600,000 to refurbish their scout den. They hope that by competing in the “Source to Sea” Challenge, that they will be able to raise a good portion of funds to help them on theIr way. They are receiving plenty of much needed support and Europcar Ireland is proud to be supporting the Malahide Sea Scouts Source to Sea Challenge, which will see the troupe navigate the 125km length of the River Liffey from its source in the Wicklow mountains to its estuary in Dublin Bay.

The group which is made up of Scouts, Ventures, Cubs, Beavers and Leaders from age six and upwards, aims to complete the journey in just three days between 28th- 30th June. The 125km distance will be covered by kayaking, rowing, cycling and sailing with camp sites set up each night. The challenge aims to raise funds to refurbish the Malahide Sea Scouts Den. The current facility was built almost 30 years ago and is in need of modernisation and redevelopment. The plan also aims to

increase the capacity of the Den to accommodate the 455 people who are currently on a waiting list. Robert McKernan, Group Leader, Malahide Sea Scouts, told the County Leader, “After 30 years since we last developed our Scouts Den, we are embarking on a challenging refurbishment. Raising €600,000 is a challenge, but there is fantastic goodwill in our community, and everyone is rallying behind us to ensure another 93 years of sea scouting in Malahide.”

Malahide Residents To Have Unusual Neighbours Residents in Robswall, Malahide, may soon have some very hairy neighbours, thanks to a county council scheme to graze Highland Cattle on open space in the area. A similar scheme is already up and running at St. Catherine’s Park in Lucan and the Robswall initiative is being taken up by the council’s parks

division and its bio-diversity officer. As well as providing the obvious visual interest of these unique, long-haired breed of cattle, the scheme is understood to encourage bio-diversity on the grazed lands. The area of open space being looked at for the scheme is already fenced on three sides, and will, of course,

Cllr Eoghan O’Brien (FF), has broadly welcomed the idea, and said that soundings he has taken locally in the past weeks have garnered a largely positive response from Malahide residents for the scheme. “I think it’s quite a good idea and quite a unique one, but it is a new thing and you never know what

The County Council will not be carrying out new traffic calming measures on Ashton Broc estate in Swords, despite pleas from locals that the traffic on the estate is endangering children at play. The local authority has agreed to install new ‘Children at Play’ signs on the estate but will not take new traffic calming measures like installing speed ramps. The council said that illegal parking on the estate, which is also causing local concern, is a matter for the Gardaí. Denying the call for new traffic calming measures made by Cllr. its reasoning by saying: “Ashton Broc is an urban development with narrow roads, bends, on-street parking and housing entrances close to the road.” “In light of this and the current budget constraints it is unlikely that Ashton Broc will be listed as a priority for the introduction of speed control measures. The council’s priority for the installation of ramps is normally for an estate that has a long, straight wide road which is not the case in Ashton Broc.” Cllr McGuire told the County Leader that he was disappointed with the Council’s response and said that the estate should have speed ramps installed to ensure the safety of children at play. “Safety of the residents, and in particular the children, should be of primary concern to the Council. While I welcome the new signage, I think that further options are needed,” he concluded.

They put their hands in their pockets and gave whatever they could to Sile Seery and Dora Fitzpatrick, who were running in the Mini Marathon to raise funds for the well known nursing home. New Passport Service To Improve Turnaround Times With the holiday season well and truly underway, there has been a wide welcome for changes in the passport application process. New passports will now be delivered more speedily and at a lower cost. From the beginning of July, all passport postal applications will have to be submitted through the Passport Express services at local post offices. This will allow for applications to be processed faster with guaranteed turnaround times being more realistically met. People should be aware that applications made through standard postal service will no longer be processed after 30th June. In conjunction, a new appointment service will be in operation at the Passport Office on Molesworth Street for those who need to have passports issued at short notice. This new streamlined service will make it easier for people to obtain passports quickly and to have their business conducted in a more efficient way.

Funds Approved For Rush Waste Water Facility Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has confirmed that over €2.7 million has been approved by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan to progress vital works on the waste water sewage scheme in Rush. This is great news for Rush, as the existing network does not comply with EU standards and residents were particularly concerned when Rush Harbour bathing water failed to meet Environment Protection Agency Standards. Farrell told the County Leader,

“Following this report, I tabled a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for the Environment in order to highlight the urgent need for the County Council to receive funding for the implementation of the second phase of works that would link Rush’s sewer network to the new Portrane treatment plant. I recently received photos of untreated sewage in Rush Harbour which in this day and age is completely unacceptable,” he said. “I received confirmation from Minister Hogan that funding of

over €2.7 million has been approved to carry out this work and the Council can now proceed with the next phase of the Donabate/ Portrane/ Rush/ Lusk Sewage Scheme. This is the second part of a four phased approach to providing treatment for waste water arising in the Rush catchment that will link the Rush sewer network into the new Portrane wastewater plant.” “On completion, this vital infrastructure will significantly improve current restrictions on development in the area caused by inadequate drainage infrastructure, and will ensure compliance of Rush discharge with EU standards,” he concluded.

Lusk Toddlers Support For Barnardos On Saturday, 1st June last, ‘Toddle team’, the Tiddle toddlers mainly from Lusk, took on a very important challenge in the Big Toddle for Barnardos. The fun sponsored walk to help create a better start in life for vulnerable children their own age took place in the garden of organiser, Lusk Childminder Fionnuala Jones-Girvin. She enthused, “I have been doing this event for a few years now and love what the children bring to it. They love

the obstacle course and cannot wait to get started, its a little twist to the sponsored walk idea, but the children

have so much fun,” she said. The team of 20 children aged from 14 months to eight years joined Barnardos to

raise vital funds for vulnerable children in Ireland. Every cent raised will go directly to help the children and families that Barnardos works with.

Okay, so Father’s Day is approaching and we still don’t know what to get our favourite man for his special day. If we’re completely honest, we must admit that Father’s Day doesn’t rank as high as its maternal counterpart on the gifting stakes. Mother’s Day is just so much easier and the reality is that dads just aren’t as passionate about flowers and face cream, making the present buying that little bit more difficult. Despite this fact, we’ve tried our best to make buying a bit easier with our gift suggestions for the perfect Father’s Day present.

At the end of a long year looking after children or getting up at ungodly hours to take our place in traffic gridlock on our way to work, the thoughts of a relaxing short break or holiday is music to our ears. We are very fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, where hospitality and great food and wine are taken for granted. We regard ourselves as the land of the thousand welcomes, so why not sample it for ourselves. As Ireland is a small country and the network of roads has increased dramatically over the Celtic Tiger era, nowhere is more that two or three hours from Dublin. While the recession has had a devastating effect on our economy, the old saying, “It’s an ill wind that doesn’t blow some good” is very apt where great

Here Come The Ladies For this week’s County Living, we decided to take a trip down to the Swords Ladies Club to find out why the group is as popular as ever and why it means so much to its members. The Swords Ladies Club is a group which its members are very proud to be a part of. This is probably an under statement, as not only are members proud to be associated with the group, but many feel it is an integral part of their daily lives. Club president Mary Norton, says the group has gone from strength to strength since it was set up in 1970. “It was originally set up by a woman named Maeve Groghan, and it started out quite small, with just a few ladies gathering in each others houses and then it grew from there,” she said. The group meet every Tuesday night from about 8.15pm to 10.30pm in the Senior Citizens Day Centre and currently have a close knit number of 30 ladies attending each week. They participate in a variety of different activities such as: arts and crafts, quizzes, photography and cooking to name a few and they also frequently invite guest speakers to give a talk on topics of interest. “There’s really something for everyone to enjoy,” she said. “We try and cater to the interests of our members and plan various activities around what they might enjoy. We’re a very active group, so there’s always something going on.” She goes onto explain that the group was initially set up because at that time (in the 1970s), there would have been no other outlet for women. “We’re all actually members of our umbrella group, which is the Irish Federation of Woman’s Clubs, but back then before things really got going, there would have been virtually no outlets for women to socialise, so that’s how it all started.” Mary has been a member of the group for the past 23 years, and she says joining was one of the best things she ever did. “I had been a member of a previous club before joining the Swords group and I can honestly say that it was the best thing I ever did. I just couldn’t imagine my life without it, and I think many members would agree with me on that one. The support network that you have is really incredible and the sense of community within the group is just fantastic.” When I ask what made her want to become involved, she said she always liked the idea of being associated with a group that was involved in their community. “The group is very community orientated and then there is the simpler idea that comes with being in a ladies group in that obviously women understand women, so there’s always someone that you

can relate to, which is brilliant. And I’ve always thought that there was a lovely camaraderie that comes with a ladies group, it’s something very positive.” She says that if she were to explain why the group meant so much to her, it wouldn’t be hard to do so: “The lasting friendships are one of the best things about the group. Everyone is so supportive of each other and I’ve made friends for life that I couldn’t imagine being without.” She also says that even as the years have gone one, the closeness between members is still as prominent as it ever was. “All the members are still really close; I think if anything, the bonds have become stronger as the years have gone on.” The group is very much involved in the community and until very recently, they were heavily involved in organising Daffodil Day (all in aid of the Irish Cancer Society), and were responsible for organising the Swords events. “It’s something that we loved being involved in and we were the main organisers of it for the past 20 years. We’ve had to hand the reigns over to others, but we’re still involved; it’s just in a slightly lesser role,” Mary explained. When I ask about particular highlights over the years, Mary says that along with the friendships made, she’s got to visit and explore many new cities that she otherwise might not have got to see. “We’ve been to all different places throughout Europe and central America on various outings over the years, which has been fantastic.” Mary says her life is extremely busy, and that she has four grandchildren to keep her occupied during the day. “I’m always on call when nessescery,” she jokes. She also recently celebrated 38 years of marriage, which is quite a milestone to reach. On behalf of the club, Mary would like to pay tribute to all the members involved in the group, particularly those that they’ve lost over the years. We’ve had some really amazing people involved, which we’ve been deeply sad to lose and just wanted to pay tribute to them and all involved. Without our members, we would have no group so it’s really down to them.” Mary says the group are always ready to welcome any new members who would like to join in. “If nothing else, it’s a great way to socialise and get to know more about your community.” Though the ladies will be wrapping things up for the summer at the end of June, they will be back in full swing in early September and would love to see some new faces.

“The sense of community within the group is just fantastic.”

Council Finally Takes Lusk Estate In Charge The news that the County Council has taken Dun Emer Estate in Lusk in charge has come as a great relief for residents of the estate. Up until recently, developer O’Dwyer Nolan had responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the estate. Failure to attend to these duties by the developer has meant

After months and years of representations at all levels to rectify this situation, the result is that the hard work of many has finally been rewarded and the hope is that unsightly grass verges and amenity areas will be a thing of the

Cycling Initiatives Will Boost Local Tourism Local Councillor, Anthony Lavin (FG), has asked the County Council to utilise more cycling facilities in the North County in an effort to boost local tourism. He put forward the question at the recent council meeting, and said that new local cycling initiatives would give local towns a much needed tourism boost and highlight our beautiful coastline. He told the County Leader: “Given that we are in such close proximity to the Airport, I feel that there is a real opportunity here to make the North County a destination for cycling tourism,” he said. “When you look at similar schemes that are currently active around the city centre and throughout Dublin, you can see how a similar scheme would be equally successful at a local

level.” “We have a truly beautiful coastline that will really get a boost with a cycling tourism initiative. Visitors could just hop on a bike and will then see all the treasures that our towns have to offer,” he said.

Local TD Alan Farrell (FG), has welcomed the decision by Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton, to increase the limits for rent supplement in the North County. He told the County Leader: “Due to the rental market increase in the North County over the past two years, the availability of rental properties within the current limits has dropped by approximately 10 per cent, resulting in difficulty for tenants to source appropriate accommodation within the current limits.” “These figures were reflected in the number of constituents from the locality who have contacted me in crisis over the past twelve months, unable to source appropriate accommodation for their families and facing the prospect of leaving their community.” “I recently welcomed the decision to carry out a Rent Limit Review, which has now resulted in the increase of rent limits,” he continued. “This review sets Rent Supplement maximum rates to ensure that 35 per cent of the relevant

Balscadden Novelist Launches Second Book Balscadden novelist Anthony Whelan launched the second book in his ‘Thrillosophy’ trilogy last week. His new book, ‘Amy’s Amazon’ is the follow-up to the successful ‘Laura’s Legacy’, originally published in 2009. He excitedly told the County Leader a little more about his new book: “‘Thrillosophy’ is not a word that you will find in any dictionary not yet, anyway,” said the Balbriggan-born man with a smile. “It is a word I have coined to describe the fusion of Thriller and Philosophy that gave rise to these books.” In ‘Amy’s Amazon’, we are reintroduced to Amy

Williams, who has fled to the Amazon to hide from the malevolent PCIA, a shadowy organisation built on power and corruption. The author is no stranger to hardship, having overcome his own tragic hurdles in life. At just 21,

passed away, stacking hay some 30 feet up in the barn, when suddenly it all shifted, and the last thing I remember was crashing down with it.” He spent a month in hospital, and the surgeon told him that was the end of his manual labour. “All my life had been spent geared towards the one thing and now I was left to pick up the pieces
