Swords Man Nominated For Top Award Swords resident, Matt Cullen has been nominated for The 2015 Charity Hero Award (in association with the Volunteer Ireland Awards). This prestigious award is a lifetime achievement award honouring a volunteer who has over the course of their life made an extraordinary contribution to a good cause.

By Patrick Finnegan This award represents a unique collaboration between the volunteer Ireland awards and the better together campaign. It aims to shine a light on those remarkable individuals who, year after year, dedicate their time and energy to supporting a community and voluntary organisation, club or association. For 10 years, Matt has been an invaluable member of the Tidy Towns team in Swords. always going above and beyond what is expected of him. He approaches all of his tasks with a positive attitude. Matt’s charm and spirit has been instrumental, not only to the success of Tidy Towns, but also in attracting new members to join in. Matt makes sure to include all members of the community in Tidy Towns, breaking down the language barrier with foreign nationals and involving children in the

planting of flowerbeds. Five year ago, Matt was diagnosed with the life-debilitating condition idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, this has failed to dampen his volunteering spirit and he continues to volunteer on even the most strenuous project. Niamh Tracey of Swords Tidy Towns, who nominated Matt for a Volunteer Ireland Award said “Matt shows the way to a better Swords - his concern for the wellbeing of other members and the improvement of Swords village demonstrated by what he does and how he does it: patient, determined, bright, listening, laughing. No matter how painstaking the task, no matter how many times graffiti has been washed off this wall or trolleys extracted from this river and in all weathers, Matt is always positive. Ready with a smile and a joke, encouraging new members and old, making difficult jobs easier with his knowledge, and tedious jobs fun with his enthusiasm,” she said. “People of Swords have a chance to vote for Matt by visiting the link http://2015.bettertogether.ie/ch arity-hero/matt-cullen. You can vote once a day up until the deadline on the 4th December,” said Niamh.

Success Story For County Council The Fingal Festival of Fire and Oktoberfest, which were run by the Events Unit in the County Council over the Halloween weekend, have been acknowledged as an outstanding success. Management and staff of the Council deserve to be congratulated on their professionalism at boh events. The Festival of Fire on Halloween night was attended by over 4,000 people who gathered early in Swords Town Park for the free family fun event. Children and parents were greeted by spooky characters and made their way through the Scary Tunnels. The evening was finished off in style with a spectacular fireworks display. Another boost for the weekend activities was that, while spirits were high and the atmosphere was electric, there were no reported incidents, which was confirmed to the County Leader by local Gardai. A County Council spokesperson said, “Oktoberfest was run over three days, with Swords Castle, transformed into a spooktacular arena complete with a giant suspended skull, adding to the Halloween atmosphere. Friday and Saturday nights completely sold out due to the popular demand of Two Time Polka and Interskalatic bands. On Sunday families availed of the afternoon’s entertainment and with an almost full arena on Sunday night, people boogied away to Marvin and The Grooves.” “The event was a success from both a community and economic aspect with traders in the village enjoying the footfall through their doors,” the spokesperson said. Paul Reid, Chief Executive Fingal County Council said “All the hard work of Fingal staff over the last few months has paid off, with the huge success of Oktoberfest and the Festival of Fire. The weekend had a fantastic variety of events for young and old alike. We look forward to providing many more events of this calibre over the coming year,” he said.

The arrival in Swords of one of the most readily identifiable retail brand names is viewed as a major boost for the town. Thunders Bakery recently opened a branch of their famous bakery on Lower Main Street, adjacent to Swords Castle and the impact has been instant. The County Leader spoke to Rolestown native, Sinead Heffernan, Managing Director of Thunders who outlined her reasons for opening a shop in Swords. She said, “We’ve been trying to locate in Swords for quite a while. Thunders was here in the early 1980s but for logistical reasons it closed. While Swords suffered during the recession, there seems to be a vibrancy returning to the town. This present location became available and it suited us fine, small enough but perfect for our requirements,” she said. We have always had a great demand for cakes from all over North County Dublin, in places like Lusk, Rush, Skerries and Balbriggan. We could not deliver for less than €30, which meant that customers were furious. Now we have a number of pick-ups

further afield in Swords that wouldn’t come as far as Drumcondra, she said. Thunders has always been identified with Drumcondra and the company now had 12 outlets (ten bakeries and two cafes) dotted across Dublin. “Our cafes are located at Mespil Road and at Liffey Valley. Our Black Forest cakes are always synonymous with Thunders, also fresh cream cakes and bread are always popular. All our bakers are fully qualified artisan bakers. We take our bread off the shelves and slice it, so we have a deli because we can slice our bread. Our coffee and tea complements this. We try to keep our purchases as local as we can, including our jams. Thunders also caters for the early morning travellers who find the breakfast roll (which is making a return) very popular. Thunders are open six days a week and they will open on Sundays (10am to 2pm) for a six month trial period to see if demand is there. Tony Lambert CEO of Dublin Fingal Chamber congratulated Sinead on the opening of Thunders. he said, “

Malahide Is Best DART Station Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), has congratulated Malahide Station on winning the accolade of Best DART Station at the annual Iarnród Éireann Best Station Awards. He said, “Malahide Station provides an easy link for visitors and tourists to come to our local community. It provides an essential transport link which incentivises investment in Malahide and the surrounding communities, while also providing a vital link between Malahide and the city centre. “The demand on public transport is increasing significantly, particularly with more people going back to work and tourist numbers rising. This puts stations, such as Malahide under

increased pressure to perform at a high standard. This award shows that M a l a h i d e Station, and the staff who work Alan Farrell TD there, are responding to this challenge beating off competition from southside stations, including Dun Laoghaire, Sandycove and Glasthule, to take home the award,” he said. “I am pleased that the work of the local volunteers was also recognised with a special mention being given to the beautiful garden in Malahide Station, which is diligently maintained by members of the local community.” “I would also like to extend my congratulations to the team in Balbriggan Station, which was highly commended in the Commuter Station section of the awards,” he concluded.

Volunteers are currently being recruited for an exciting and fun new Foróige club for young people aged 10-12 years in Donabate. This club will increase the number of young people that can become involved with Foróige in Donabate and will complement the existing club for teens that has gone from strength to strength. Volunteers should be aged 18 or over and have an interest in working with young people and helping them develop and gain new skills. The club will run on a Friday evenings for one hour. All volunteers will received full training and ongoing support. If you or anyone you know might be interested, contact Bryan Gavin at bryan.gavin@foroige .ie

EU Must Adapt To The Needs Of its Members It looks like the EU is about to go through a period of reflection, reimagining and restructuring. It seems that political thinkers have come to the realisation that the current model just does not fit the ‘Super State’ that’s being created under the present rules and political drive.

By Cathal Boland In Germany, the liberal Prometheus Think Tank suggested that the ever closer union has had its day. What suited the six original members of the Common Market no longer suits the now very large open Europe which exists today. In part this is in keeping with the thinking of the UK Government. Over the last couple of years, Cameron jockeyed his country towards next year’s referendum , he pressed for reform of the Union. Many argued then that reform was not now, nor would it be on the agenda. Today most serious thinkers concede change must happen if the union is to remain intact and vibrant. The possibility of a UK pull out of the EU is a cause of real concern for us here in Ireland as a new report from the Economic and

ised by a committee headed by Sheilagh McGirl and overseen by Donal O’Meara, President of Malahide Lions Club. It was well supported by the Malahide community, with €10,000 being raised on the night. A total of €5,000 was presented to both Cystic Fibrosis and St. Michael’s House in Baldoyle.

Social Research Institute has warned of possible serious repercussions in the country. They say that we could lose exports by up to €2.9 billion. The suggestion is that we would suffer not just a trade loss but that we would see the introduction of border controls with restrictions on free movement within the island and ease of access to Britain. In such a scenario we could expect a negative impact on wages, prices and the energy sector. Irish politicians are now getting involved in the Brexit debate and going into the UK to try to shape public opinion. This week saw Enda Kenny address the Annual Conference of the Confederation of British Industry. We trust that he stayed on script. In recent weeks Bertie Ahern spoke in Newry where he said: “I don’t love Europe as much as I did in 1972 but the alternative is something that we sure don’t want”. Another heavy hitter, John Bruton joined in the fray some time ago when he argued the case for remaining in the EU at an event organised by Open Europe, the UK based Think Tank. The EU is a great concept but it must be prepared to adapt and to mould itself to meet the challenges of the day and to be capable of responding to the emerging views which are in part arising from the new member states it so eagerly sought.

New Plan To Tackle Crime And Burglary Local TD Alan Farrell (FG) has Burglary response, named Thor, was recently commented on the Operation new Anti-Crime and Burglary welcomed by Farrell, who said, “This new plan will response by An be backed up by Garda Síochána. i n c r e a s e d According to Government Farrell, this will investment of xxx5 crack down on million, a tougher crime in the law on sentences country, including and stricter bail for the North County. repeat offenders,” Many rural areas he added. have been He further stated subjected to Alan Farrell TD that Operation burglaries across the country recently, and this Thor is aimed at tackling plan will come as a relief to burglars, organised crime those living in rural North gangs and prolific offenders as well as working with the County Dublin. “This new Anti-Crime and communities to prevent crime.

Key elements include the use of new high powered vehicles by the armed Regional Response Units, extra highvisibility patrols in identified burglary hotspots, the increased use of checkpoints to tackle criminal gangs using the national road network, a high-profile national crime prevention awareness campaign to be launched later this month, as well as programmes to help reduce reoffending by prolific offenders and enhanced support for victims. “Burglaries have a terrible and unacceptable impact on families and communities nationwide, both urban and rural. It is important to invest in more Gardaí and vehicles and to strengthen the law to crack down on serious and repeat offenders,” he concluded.

While the Council budget sailed through without incident, the proposal of Councillor Tony Murphy (NP) to have vacant commercial properties in the county free of commercial rates, ran aground on the rocks. It was defeated unanimously, with only Murphy voting in favour. Two weeks ago, the Balbriggan councillor claimed in the County Leader, the danger to jobs in the area, should Cllr. Murphy commercial rates be applied to vacant properties. When asked by the County Leader about the devastating rejection of his proposal, Murphy was philosophical. He said, “The elected members of Fingal County Council have a number of key functions in relation to the budgetary process, one of which is the power to determine the proportion of rates refunds which will apply to vacant commercial properties. I’m disappointed at the lack of support from my colleagues in not recognising the implications of this decision.” In an optimistic vein, a defiant Murphy continued, “An opportunity still exists for this decision to be voted on again, when we vote on the budget next autumn.” he said. Murphy also expressed disappointment that Bremore Castle in Balbriggan was not allocated funding to bring it to completion. “I hope that next year, sufficient funding will be available to bring Bremore Castle in line with the Council’s Tourism strategy” he concluded.

Welcoming the announcement, Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison said, “We are delighted to see Blue Air add the city of Cluj-Napoca to its route network at Dublin Airport from next summer. “Cluj is Romania’s second largest city and is located in the historical Transylvanian region. Under the current Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney, a small number of dominant players have been allowed to set prices, further squeezing already hard pressed farmers,” he said. “I am calling for the establishment of a Groceries Code Adjudicator to oversee the relationship between supermarkets and the primary producer. This will ensure that large retailers treat their suppliers fairly and abide by the law. The Adjudicator will also be given legislative powers to sanction any breach of the law. “This is about supporting family farms, making sure that fair prices are achieved and increasing farm profitability. Fine Gael’s decisions, which have only served the large multiples and processors, must be addressed and reversed to ensure the viability of the important farming community in North County Dublin,” he concluded.

Adventure Time In Malahide A forest adventure area and multi-use reinforced grass area has been proposed by the County Council for Malahide Demesne. The news has been welcomed by Cllr Anthony Lavin (FG), who is delighted with the proposition as it will be a great asset to Malahide and its residents and will generate more ecotourism in the area. The proposed Forest Adventure facility will occupy an area of approximately five hectares and will be close to the main car park of the Castle grounds. Lavin said, “It will be fun for the whole family with both children and adults being able to use the facilities. Adventure seekers will be able to climb into and move between the canopies of large mature trees in the woodland in a safe and enjoyable way and will contribute significantly to outdoor amenity in the park.” “Locals concerned with the wellbeing of the Castles’ much loved forest areas can rest easy. The facility will be designed in a sustainable way to avoid damage to the woodland and will take advantage of existing infrastructure in the park including changing rooms, paths and car parking areas,” he said. If approved, the Council will seek expressions of interest from suitably experienced operators to assist with the design, development and management of the facility. This is more good news for the environmentally minded as income generated by the activity will be used to help fund woodland management projects in the Demesne. The proposal also sees a bid to develop a multi-use Reinforced Grass Area adjacent and contiguous to the existing Bridgefield Car Park located on the north eastern side of the Castle grounds.

Funding Announced For New Rural CCTV Initiative Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly recently announced that funding of €50,000 would be put towards the cost of a pilot rural CCTV initiative. These CCTV cameras will be located in strategic positions in rural locations around the North County and beyond, with the aim of increasing public safety and deterring criminal or anti-social behaviour. The images from the cameras will be reviewed in the event of a crime or incident being committed or a request from An Garda Síochána. This is set to act not only as a deterrent, but also to assist with the possible prosecution of offenders through facilitating the detection and investiga-

tion of offences as well as providing recorded evidence of occurrences of incidents and also facil-

itating quicker responses. “This is a great example of how local communities can work together with

the Local Authority and An Garda Síochána towards combating antisocial and criminal behaviour and ensuring peace of mind for people who live in more rural locations,” the minister stated.

County including Swords, Malahide, K i n s e a l y , Portmarnock, Rush, Lusk and Darndale. All funds raised will go to the Movember campaign, which aims to raise awareness of men’s health and focuses in particular on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. As prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in Ireland, affecting 1 in 8 Irish men, all support will be gratefully received. Movember is an initiative that aims at changing the attitudes men have

towards their health. This was done by promoting the idea of growing a moustache to changing the face of men’s health. This year Derek Keating is encouraging people to get involved with the MOVE initiative, a 30 day fitness challenge promoting 30 minutes of activity every day during Movember. “If you move for 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, you can offset cancer by 50 per cent,” Keating said. “The goal is to get men living six years longer. That will change economies and it will change the world,” he added.

Winter is slowly but surely on its way as temperatures drop, days are getting shorter, nights are getting longer and the cosy season officially begins. But before we can lay back and enjoy the cold season, we need to prepare our homes and gardens for winter temperatures. The North County has many venues that will support you with that. Remember that gardening does not end when summer ends, your garden just requires a different kind of treatment. One very important step to winterise your garden is mulching. Many different materials can be used to cover the soil’s surface like bark clippings or leaf mould. Mulch provides nutrition for the plants, it locks in moisture, forms a barrier against weeds and helps isolate the roots from the winter cold. Autumn is a good time to spread a thin layer of mulch onto the soil and around new planted trees and shrubs. Check which of your plants and flowers thrived in your garden. These plants have a lot of underground activity going on as they are preparing for winter by growing roots and sucking up water and nutrients from the soil before it freezes. In

winter, tender plants need a thick layer of mulch in order to protect their roots from frost. In late winter and early

spring it is important to mulch entire beds to trap in moisture from wet weather and ensures that beds won’t dry out too quickly in summer. As people living in the North County are deservedly proud of their roses, as they bloom in all different colours all summer long, it is important to give them the right treatment to ensure

they are going to bloom next year in their usual glory. Therefore, pruning is a crucial step. For best results, pruning should be done in winter when the plant is in its dormant phase. Roses that are not completely established should be pruned with care and should receive less vigourous cutting back. Leave four to eight stems, but the general rule is: the more you prune, the larger the flowers. Avoid cutting the strongest buds and ensure that the remaining buds are facing outward to ensure outward growing roses. There are plenty gardening shops across the North County that will properly supply you for winterising your garden. Products are available at reasonable prices as many stores are on discount at this time of the year.

For some time you’ve been juggling obligations involving everything from career and family to long-term security. As the week begins, sudden shifts in circumstances take over, and force an extensive review - for the better.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

You begin the week thinking that you’ve once again been cornered into a situation in which you just don’t want to be. But events mark a turning point for everyone - even changes in circumstances for some.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

If this unsettling week is too draining, reflect on times in the past when you’ve felt similarly stressed. While you knew changes were inevitable, you were still rattled. But you thrived, and you will this time, too.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

While you can’t stop thinking this week, try to suspend making judgements until after Wednesday - and use the time to explore all options. Others may complain, but now is the time to think of yourself first.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

You have high standards and, if you feel that you’ve fallen short in any area, you can be hard on yourself. However, this is a week to turn aside all self-doubts and wallow in the overwhelming ideas or offers which come.

Cancer

By now you’ve become accustomed to making decisions, only to have them swept aside by sudden changes in circumstances or others’ whims. You can now begin to relax, for all this is about to change for the better.

Tantalising good ideas or offers are still in the air, but you’re beginning to get nervous. You’d like to know where others stand and to have things settled. Don’t hurry this process too much for now, however.

The students participated in modules such as working in teams, pitching an idea, understanding consumers, coding skills and leveraging social media. Each team designed a theoretical campaign for the Irish Cancer Society, proposing innovative solutions to help people improve their health and reduce their risk of getting cancer. They developed ideas from concept to delivery and presented their projects at the end of the week.

Christmas Comes To Malahide Marina A request has been received from Malahide Chamber of Commerce to hold a Christmas type event in the village. The request follows meetings between event organisers and the local Chamber. The event is planned for opening on 20th November and will be located at the Marina Green, and will run until 23rd December. Attractions will include an ice rink, food stalls, Santa Village

and festively themed carousels. The date was chosen to coincide with the turning on of the Christmas lights in Malahide Village. The original proposal was for the event, which will incorporate a market and Christmas village, to be held at the football pitches at Bridegfield. However this site was deemed unsuitable. The timeline on the planning of this event was tight and this is the first

opportunity to present a plan. The event organisers will engage with a number of community based organisations who will offer special deals and discounts. Local traders and businesses will be offered first refusal on stalls. A full memorandum of understanding is being finalised covering the above plus technical issues such as, noise pollution, curfew, environmental issues, risk assessments and an event management plan.

Reilly Welcomes New Child Care Bill Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, James Reilly has welcomed the publication of the Child Care Bill 2015, which aims to provide for a statutory right to an aftercare plan for eligible children and young people for the first time. “I am delighted to have this Bill published and look forward to bringing it before the Oireachtas for consideration,” Reilly said. “This Bill builds on the progress made in relation to the provision of aftercare in the recent past and will provide, as a right, for eligible children and young people to have a plan for their transition from State care into independent living,” he added. Funding For ASD Classroom In Balbriggan Local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has welcomed the allocation of funding to Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín, Balbriggan, for the development of an ASD unit classroom for children with autism. He said, “I am pleased that Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín has been allocated funding from the Department of Education and Skills for an ASD unit classroom in the school.” “The provision of facilities, such as ASD classrooms is of the utmost importance in

terms of supporting children with autism during their time in our education system. We must work to ensure that all children in our schools in the North County and throughout the country, receive the greatest possible benefit from our education system. In order to do this, it is necessary to provide our schools with all of the necessary investment and resources to adequately support the needs of all

students. It is essential that all children who require additional assistance and support during their time in education receive precisely that. “I am delighted that Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín is receiving this investment from the Department of Education and Skills. With the youngest population in the state, North County Dublin is home to a large number of families with children in full-time education. It

Many cancer patients and their families in the North County and beyond face a financial crisis, while they are going through their treatment. This was reported in a survey called ‘The Real Cost of Cancer’, commissioned by the Irish Cancer Society. A large number of patients face a severe drop in income, while at the same time running up extra bills. The average extra spend per month amongst cancer patients surveyed, including those with a medical card or private health insurance was €862, while those who cannot work or work less as a result of having cancer face an income drop averaging €1,400 a month. “Our report shows that many cancer patients are facing financial stress by having to deal with huge extra costs and a massive drop in income at a time when they are going through the severe physical and emotional impact of a very serious illness”, says Kathleen O’Meara, Head of

Tusla, the Child and Family Agency to prepare an aftercare plan for an eligible child or eligible young person. Tusla will, when the Bill is enacted, have a duty to identify the child or young person’s need for assistance and to prepare a plan that identifies the relevant aftercare supports. The Minister further explained that aftercare, a term describing the support given to a young person to assist him or her in making the transition to independent living when leaving statutory care at the age of 18, was non-existent a decade ago. “We have now moved to the point where young people leaving care will have a right to an aftercare plan. This has come about in recognition of the particular challenges linked to moving into independent adult living. This Bill lays the foundations for better aftercare support,” he concluded.

is vital that we provide schools throughout the North County with the necessary investment to ensure our children receive a high-quality education in an environment which is conducive to their learning. I will continue to actively engage with the Minister of Education and Skills, and her Department, to gain further supports for the future development of schools throughout the constituency,” he said.

Advocacy and Communications. According to O’Meara, the requests for help from the Irish Cancer Society’s financial support scheme rose by nearly 30 per cent last year and this year by further 15 per cent. The scheme is funded entirely from public donations. “This year so far the Society has spent xxx1.2 million to support patients with most payments going towards home heating, childcare and travelling to treatment, including parking,” she said. “As the medical card is designed to be available for those who are suffering financial hardship as a result of their illness, the Irish Cancer Society urges local people to get one. Cancer is a financial catastrophe for many families,” she concluded.

Clifford-Lee Disputes Government’s Childcare Figures Fianna Fáil general election candidate, Lorraine Clifford-Lee maintains that the Government’s figures on childcare are inaccurate and a complete red herring. She has questioned the detail of the proposals announced in the budget on childcare, warning that the Government has made a number of claims that the small print simply does not stand up. “The expansion of the early childcare care and education scheme is not what it seems and parents should not be fooled. The free pre-

school scheme only covers three hours per day for 38 weeks, which means that parents working longer than 15 hours per week have to pay for other childcare arrangements,” she said. She continued, “While the government announced that children from ages three to five years will be eligible to participate on the Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme, it appears that in reality this measure will do little to significantly expand the provision of preschool actually undertaken.” “For lots of different reasons, most parents will choose to place their child in primary school, as more hours per day of childcare are provided in school than in preschool. “No one will actually get 2.5 years of free pre-school. The figures just don’t add up. The only way it would work is if your child does not start primary school until they are aged six years,” she concluded.

Welcome For Water Services Strategic Plan Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly has recently approved the Water Services Strategic Plan which sets out the strategic objectives for the delivery of water services by Irish Water over the 25 year period up to 2040. The Plan further outlines the challenges affecting the provision of public water services and identifies the priorities to be tackled in the short and medium term. Commenting on the Plan, Minister Kelly stated that the water sector in Ireland faces significant challenges resulting from decades of under investment. “At the beginning of 2015, 121 drinking water supply zones serving almost 940,000 people required major upgrading. Almost 49 per cent of all drinking water was being lost through leakage.

Chapel Green, Lusk, Co. Dublin Who died on 15th November 1999 A bouquet of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years. It does not take a special day, For us to think of you. Each Mass we hear, each prayer we say, Is offered up for you. We cannot bring the old days back, When we were all together, The family chain is broken now, But memories live forever. It was a sudden parting, Too bitter to forget, Only those who loved you, Are the ones who will never forget. May he rest in peace, dear Jesus, In Thy heavenly home above, With the Sacred Heart of Jesus, In His own eternal love. Along the road to yesterday, That leads us straight to you, Are memories of happy days, Together we once knew. The blow was hard, the shock severe, To part with one we loved so dear, Our loss is great, we’ll not complain, But trust in God to meet again. A silent grief that’s in our hearts, No human eye can trace, For many a broken heart is hid, Beneath a smiling face. Mass Offered Sunday 15th November 11.30am St. Macculen’s Church, Lusk
