We Remember
The flagship event of the County Council’s Centenary celebrations of the 1916 Rising took place in Swords on Sunday last, which attracted a crowd of in excess of 10,000 locals and visitors. The event was marshalled expertly and the local authority can feel very proud of how they brought the story of 1916 to the local community, through imaginative re-enact-
ments of events from the period. The planning for this event began 18 months ago and featured a series of historical lectures and exhibitions, including memorabilia days in centres across the region. Relatives of many of the volunteers from the North County brought some
invaluable momentos which were digitally recorded by the Council, to be archived for future generations to enjoy. Eithne Mallin, who is the County
Council’s 2016 Co-ordinator and grand niece of executed 1916 leader, Michael Mallin, was delighted with the success of the celebrations and the entire Centenary Programme. She told the County Leader, “I think we hit the right note here today and the relatives will be
very pleased with how the event was handled and the turnout. It all began 18 months ago and it’s been worth every pain and every ache along the way. It’s been great honour for me, as a relative, and I felt very emotional and Eithne Mallin proud,” she said.

Motorists and visitors in Swords will be well aware of the wonderful display of daffodils at the roundabouts on the main approaches to the town. Many people have remarked about the addition this initiative by the County Council has made to the appearance of the town. The County Leader spoke to the Council’s Senior Parks Superintendent, Kevin Halpenny about the comments regarding the roundabouts and he said, “This approach to mass planting of bulbs in very visible strategically important locations, is in line with keeping our green open space strategy for Fingal. It’s a very sustainable approach to civic decoration. It provides for succession of colour in visually important locations, providing maximum impact. This is the second year of this initiative and we’re very pleased with this particular approach, in terms of achieving our sustainability targets as well. We’re delighted that the public response has been so positive and we intend to expand this approach to other locations around the county,” he said. St. Andrew’s Triumph In Schools Chess Budding Magnus Carlsens and Judith Polgars were out in force for Malahide Chess Club’s annual inter-schools chess competition, which took place on Tuesday, April 19th in St. Sylvester’s GAA club. Eleven teams took part, drawn from the three primary schools in the area, St. Andrew’s , Pope John Paul II and St Oliver Plunkett School. Medals and plaques were presented to all contestants, with top honours, for the second year in a row, going to St. Andrew’s, who were presented with the Malahide & District Credit Union Cup by Credit Union Youth Officer Stephen MacDonagh. Warm tributes were paid to Tom O’Sullivan of Malahide Chess Club by Stephen MacDonagh, who said that he had done Trojan work developing chess in Malahide for more years than he cared to remember, bringing success at Community Games level among other honours. Speaking to the County Leader, Stephen MacDonagh said; “Malahide Credit Union is delighted to be associated with the schools’ chess competition, as it gives children an opportunity to compete at a high level outside the realms of the usual sporting areas.” During the presentation Tom O’Sullivan made special mention of two players, Aisling Ní Laighléis, who represented Ireland at U-12 level in European Competition last year, and William Hackett, who has been selected for the U-12 International Development Squad. The future looks bright for chess in Malahide.

Newman Calls For All-Weather Facility In Swords Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) has put forward a motion at the most recent Balbriggan/Swords Area Committee Meeting, where he is calling for an all-weather facility for sports clubs in Swords and surrounding area.
By Patrick Finnegan Newman is asking the Council to explore the possibility of providing these facilities in an area that will not cause any inconvenience to residential areas. He feels that the ideal location would be close to the proposed Swords by-pass between Ridgewood and Dublin Airport. He told the County
Cllr Joe Newman is pictured at the existing all weather training pitch at River Valley Park.
Leader, “I believe there’s a real need among local clubs for this facility. Locating it at Ridgewood may well help to solve the traffic congestion where people use the estate to get to pitches at present. The Council, as part of the Development Plan 2017 are
looking at a hub somewhere to allow for the provision of an allweather facility. In my opinion, there are three possible locations for this hub, namely Ridgewood, River Valley Park and an area close to Brackenstown. This would be of great benefit to clubs like River Valley Rangers, St Finian’s GAA Club and Swords Manor FC. It may well be a great help to tennis clubs as well,” he said. “There is certainly a real need for a community outlet in the area, which will provide a sporting outlet for children and adults alike in the community. I am actively pushing for this at Council level and I am appealing to clubs to communicate now with the Council to let them know what their plans are. It’s just about choosing the proper hub,” he concluded.
Donabate Leisure Centre Are Top Quality There was great news for the Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure centre recently when they were awarded the level 2 Q Mark by the EIQA (Excellence Ireland Quality Association).
By Aoife Read The Q Mark is a business excellence award that is given to organisations after they pass an assessment on all areas of their business. This is a highly sought after credential as It signifies that a business is run to a very high standard. The Donabate Portrane Community and Leisure Centre are the only leisure centre across the entire North County who have achieved the
Q Mark. Speaking to the County Leader, Jacinta Lowndes, manager of the leisure centre said; “The Q Mark is a quality management system. The EIQA come out and conduct an audit on all of our systems, policies, procedures, etc. So it covers all of the centre and the staffing, how we do our HR, and all our customer care. We were rated on all of those categories so it really is hard work.” She went on to say; “We did it initially four years ago. First off they come out and do a practice audit and tell you where you need to bring your standards up. So after that we worked on everything they pointed out to us
for about 6 months. We had brought our standards up so much that we made level 1, which would be pretty good, but now we are up to level 2. There are only 3 levels so it’s really an achievement. We got a certificate to say that we have achieved level 2 and we got our quality mark and we are allowed to use the logo.” “From the staff point of view everyone gets to take part in an audit so they understand the paperwork
that is involved and all the processes behind it. From a business point of view that is very valuable for them to know. The training is continual so there is continual personal development for all of the staff that work here. Outwardly it shows people that use the centre that we have a certain quality system in place that we abide by and we try each year to improve on it “ she said. She concluded by saying; “We have already conducted our audit this year and we have achieved level two again and in fact, higher again, so we are happy with that. We are just delighted to have been given the accreditation and delighted to be the only ones in the North County who have achieved the Q Mark for Leisure Centres.”

The County Council launched the Rothaiocht na mBan at a ceremony at Swords Castle on Thursday last, 21st April. The launch was performed by County Mayor, Cllr David O’Connor. The active role played by a number of women in Fingal in the 1916 Rising with Rothaíocht na mBan, was a key feature of the 1916 Commemorative Day in Swords on Sunday last, when a group of female cyclists dressed in early twentieth century period costumes rode bicycles from the era to symbolise all of the courageous women in Fingal that contributed in different ways to the 1916 Rising. The bicycle was the primary method of transportation for most people in 1916 and many women cycled significant distances throughout North County Dublin to carry out the duties assigned to them by the Irish Volunteers. Their role included delivering messages to the Volunteers, scouting the county and reporting back on the movements

the GPO, storing arms and ammunition in their homes and helping to treat the wounded after the Battle of Ashbourne. In the sworn statement of one of these women, Molly Adrien, she tells how, every day she travelled into the headquarters of the 1916 Rising in the GPO in Dublin city, bringing messages to and from the commanding officers of the Fifth Battalion (Fingal Brigade) of the Irish Volunteers based in North County Dublin. Through this action the lines of communication were kept open between the leaders of the 1916 Rising and the Fifth Battalion in the North County. Helena Bergin, Fingal County Council Architectural Conservation Officer, commented: “This event is being held in honour of the women involved in the 1916 Rising. There were many Cumann na mBan members and female relatives of the Irish Volunteers who provided assistance and support during the Rising and fended for their families in the months afterwards when the men, who were the main income source for a household, were sent to prison or internment camps. We are calling on families throughout Fingal and surrounding counties to join us in celebrating the role these women played in the birth of our nation.”

It was a great day for pupils and teachers of Scoil an Duinninigh in Kinsealy, who held their Confirmation Day at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Seabury on Wednesday last. The ceremony, which was performed by Father Caoimhin O’Mordha, was attended by a large gathering of family, friends and teachers of the students. The school choir and orchestra, comprised of 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils performed beautifully with lovely singing and they played music expertly. After the ceremony, the pupils who made their Confirmation sang a song from the altar, much to the pleasure of all assembled. The great efforts of teachers and parents in preparing the pupils for this great day in their lives was also acknowledged. After the ceremony, pupils and their families, sponsors and friends posed for photographs in the wonderful sunny weather before returning to the school for some welcome tea and refreshments.

Brexit: “Democratic Liberation Of A Whole Continent” The UK’s “Stay or Go” referendum is in the final run in. The Irish European Movement has issued a call for all who are eligible to vote on 23rd June to do so. They point out that British citizens living in Ireland are entitled to vote as are Irish people living in the UK. They tell us that registration is open online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote until Tuesday 7th June. They say they are not telling people how to vote, but they are strongly of the view that the EU without the UK would be bad for Ireland. The referendum seems too close to call but it appears that Dave may have played his last game as PM no matter what the outcome. Big guns are being called in to support the Stay campaign, with Obama and a group of former Secretaries of the US Treasury all encouraging a yes vote. Obama attended a mini summit in Bonn last week with the movers and shakers
of the EU that is Merkel, Hollande, Cameron and the Italian Renzi. The main focus was the role NATO should play in policing of Europe’s borders, counter terrorism, migration and TTIP amongst the topics discussed. Merkel has a new difficulty to face with opinion polls suggesting an anti TTIP weighting of two to one amongst committed voters. The same anti sentiment is percolating in the States but the gap is much closer. The Stop TTIP movement continues to grow. The NO to both CETA and TTIP will get a boost from the eleven day speaking tour of Europe by Maude Barlow the alternative Nobel Prize recipient and antiglobalisation leader. Those who are supportive of the agreement are failing in making a coherent argument for it. Nor are they engaging with the people of the EU to make their case. The saga that is the EUUkraine Association Agreement, which saw the fall of the Ukraine
By Cathal Boland
Government in 2014, followed by reported Russian cross border incursions and Putin getting involved with the annexing of Crimea continues. In recent weeks the Dutch electorate rejected the agreement in a referendum but their decision was overturned when Parliament vote 74 to 71 to endorse it regardless. So maybe the Brexit referendum does not really matter. Which may well be the case if UK’s Justice Secretary is correct? He says that there is a free trade zone stretching from Iceland through to Turkey open to all Europeans. Gove who heads up the “Leave” campaign continued “For Europe, Britain voting to leave will be the beginning of something potentially even more exciting – the democratic liberation of a whole Continent.”

to show the students how other people live in other parts of the world. The trip was organised in conjunction with charity Aidlink and the students raised 80,000 euro between them all for the charity. It was really great because they got to experience something that very few people have the opportunity to experience. They visited a local primary school in the Wakiso District and a Secondary school in Masaka, it was a very valuable experience for them. “ she said. Speaking about the Ability Awareness week she said; “Another aspect of our learning here is trying to be as inclusive as we can. That is where the Ability Awareness week comes in. We are the only school to do it in this area and it is really to show the kids that everyone deserves to be treated equally. Regardless of whether or not they have any disabilities or differences. We are all the same with different abilities. The students learn about different things on different days. For example; one day they might learn all about autism then the next day they would learn all about dyspraxia. This year the week ended with a play about the 1916 rising that was performed by a cast made up mostly of young people with learning disabilities. It was lovely and it was really touching to watch.” “Again this is all about encouraging our students to appreciate everyone and learn about things that are not just on the schools syllabus or in a text book,” Concluded Ms Kiely.

Picture of Ava Egan Richardson (3 1/2 ) and her brother Max (4 1/2 ) preschoolers from Beverton in Donabate who staged a ‘prison break’ at the Early Childhood Ireland conference in Croke Park on “the FUNdamentals of play” last weekend. The “inmates” were demanding more outside play, as children these days get less outdoor time than prisoners, according to keynote speaker Claire Warden, who was their warden for the day.
Beverton Preschool Win Award Beverton Preschool in Donabate have been leading innovators in outdoor and alternative teaching methods for some time and have won many awards giving them credit for the work they do. The teachers and management of Beverton believe that outdoor teaching and the inclusion of cultural diversity within their teaching is of great importance. Recently, the Early Childhood Ireland conference, which was held in Croke Park showed that ‘outdoor play is fundamental’ to young children’s development. Beverton were invited to the conference and while there two of their children staged a ‘prison break’ for more outdoor play along with preschool manager Nickola Cullen who manages Beverton Preschool. The purpose of the staged prison break was to emphasise the fact that more outside play is necessary for young children. Speaking to the County Leader, Nickola Cullen, manager of the preschool said; “There is a
real resurgence at the moment of the need for outdoor play. There’s a huge amount of research that has been going on that says that children are just not getting enough outdoor play.” The pre-school have recently been awarded their second green flag and are the only preschool in the area to have been awarded one. Manager, Nickola said; “An Taisce had stopped the green schools programme for preschools because of funding so we were really lucky that they took us on. This is our second green flag so we’ve had it for four years now.” Clearly no strangers to awards and accolades, four weeks ago the management of the preschool heard that they had won an Early Childhood Ireland Learning Story Award. These awards have been initiated to showcase the wonderful work and learning that is happening all over the country in early years settings; “Recently we have won a learning story award. This is our fourth

year now. Early childhood Ireland has an award presentation every year so you can put in some piece that is very innovative or a learning story and we’ve won both of those categories for the last four years. We won the overall category two years ago which was a nation wide one.” “Our learning story is a beautiful piece about how we handle diversity. It’s about a little girl, Roisin, who is with us whose Mother is from India and how we welcomed her whole culture into the service. Her Mother came into us and we celebrated Divali, which is a celebration of light,” she said. Many Pre-schools will celebrate things like Chinese New Year or St Patrick’s day, but the learning story aspect of the awards ceremony is awarded to services who can show how they go above and beyond to be inclusive. Nickola told us that; “Roisin made a book all about her pre-school here which she brought to India with her and showed everybody over in India. During the time when she was explaining to us about her culture, she began to tell me that I was pronouncing things wrong, she told me that ‘you have to use your Indian voice to say it silly!’, so then Roisin spoke in her Indian voice for the whole day. It’s all about equality and diversity and about being recognised and making sure she knows that her voice is being recognised as important in all that we do. The other side of it is that she’s teaching her peers all about India.” This touching story about inclusion, diversity, identity and belonging highlights how Beverton are a pre-school that goes above and beyond to ensure inclusivity for all of their children and emphasises the importance of diverse and alternative learning methods.

Everyone knows that Spring is the time of bright colours and smiles. It’s a time for positive changes. With the month of May just around the corner and the daytime hours become longer, we can now stay out and enjoy more time in the great outdoors and love the thoughts of coming home to our beautiful homes. However, people tend to spend more time inside their home than out, so why not make your home as bright and relaxing as possible.
Room By Room What ever room you feel needs your attention first is the place you want to start. Let’s say it’s the bedroom, in that case there are small improvements that will make your room look
like a new boudoir. New curtains and blinds are a start, to make the window a beautiful feature in your bedroom and you can still have that minimal look. Keeping all your clothes and belongings tidied away will automatically keep your room looking fresh and clean. If you have a small bedroom, minimalism is very important and there are lots of tricks and ways to ensure all of your essentials are well out of the way. Under bed storage boxes and bags are a great way to store some of your things. You should also take advantage of your attic, if you have one. Once all of your belongings are sorted and tidied, try scattering a few cushions on your bed and clearing bedside lockers. Try a nice lamp on your

bedside locker that will match your curtains or bed clothes. This gives the room the feeling of few colours and makes it look bigger.
Kitchen Now this is the place that many of us spend a lot of time in. Whether you cook, watch TV or just come in every so often to grab a snack, you still wouldn’t want this place to be dark, miserable and cold, especially in Spring. Paint the kitchen walls in a bright creamy colour that wouldn’t be too annoying, but would be pleasant to your eyes. Also, why not take those dark blinds down and keep the windows open, or even try some new wooden blinds that come in many different colours. This way, you could enjoy the sunshine while cooking, which would make the process a whole lot more enjoyable.
Living Room During Spring, your living room should have a lot of space. Therefore, get those old books and magazines out. The carpet may be dark and dirty after the winter, so its best to get a new one in the colour you would prefer. It is, however, advisable to leave it very bright and warm coloured. This would create a strong sense of Spring and would surely make you feel happier. If there is old furniture that takes up lots of space, replace it with something smaller and brighter. Don’t forget, a living room is a place for resting, keep it as open as possible.

Google Experience In Donabate Community College Donabate Community College were delighted to welcome Google and their Expeditions Pioneer Programme to the school on Wednesday the 20th April. The Expeditions Programme is a new product that allows teachers to take their classes on virtual field trips, immersing students in experiences that bring abstract concepts to life and giving students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom. Donabate Community College were one of just a handful of schools worldwide, who were chosen to try out this new, innovate learning experience which combines education and technology, creating a hands-on effective learning environment. The school was among the early adopters at second level to embrace twenty-first century learning in 2013 with 1:1 devices for all Junior students and four state of the art computer rooms alongside P r o f e s s i o n a l Development for teachers. On Wednesday morning, a box arrived with everything needed to travel: a tablet for the teachers, and Cardboard viewers and phones for every student. Next, teacher chose a destination, and the entire classroom jumped there automatically. The Wildlife Conservation Society, PBS, the American Museum of Natural History, the Planetary Society, and the Palace of Versailles contributed to developing the curriculum for students. Teacher Aisling Cleary said “Upon holding the device up to our eyes, we travelled around the world and got to experience a virtual reality of many famous landmarks, consisting of 3D images and videos. Places such as the Moon, the Great Barrier Reef, Buckingham Palace and the Egyptian Pyramids among many, many others, all came to life in our classroom, allowing us to achieve a greater insight into some of the wonders of the world. While immersed in this virtual world, our teacher provided us with knowledge and interesting facts relating to the landmarks and linked back what we were seeing and experiencing with the knowledge and skills we develop every day. The students really enjoyed this once in a lifetime experience, as it
gave them a better understanding of these prominent places, with many of them tied in with our core subjects such as History, English, Geography and Science.” “Although nothing replaces hopping on the bus for a field trip, Google Expeditions provide an unparalleled opportunity for supplemental learning and we are really proud to have been a part of it.” she concluded.
Aaron Page from Donabate Community College at the Google Expeditions event in their school.
