Local Man Turns Airport Green Visitors to Dublin Airport, will have been very impressed by the wonderful green lights that have lit up Terminals One, Two and the original building, in the lead up to St Patrick’s Day. But who was responsible for this greening of the airport?. The County Leader can report that it is all the work of Skerries resident, John Colville, who beat off some stiff competition to land the valuable tender. Speaking exclusively with the County Leader, John, a lighting designer by trade, explained how he came to be involved in the project. “Last year, with The Gathering, Dublin Airport were asked to join the ‘Green Initiative’ and they then put in train a process of finding suitable designers and my ideas were the ones that they favoured on the tendering process. We went on from there, working closely with the DAA to create what’s there at the moment.” John, who has wide experience of this kind of work across all the continents, said that this was one of

By Patrick Finnegan the largest projects he has ever undertaken. “The daunting part was the sheer size of the areas that I was asked to cover. That was the hard part of the design, as it involved such large surfaces to make sure we had enough to cover it. I remember being exceptionally nervous before last year’s project for The Gathering, mainly because of the sheer size of the project, but this year was a little more relaxed, where we introduced a video element, instead of just text, with 3D animations, as you approach Terminal 2,” he said. “My brief was to look at what was there at the time. We would have used much of the existing lighting that was there and changed it to green, as well as a lot of the tunnels, which we also turned to green. In Teminal One, there was already some green there, and we just enhanced it. In Terminal Two, we had complete access to do what we needed to. It’s been a real joy to work on,” said John.

Skerries man, John Colville

The whole greening of the airport lasted for a total of 10 days, coming to an end this morning, Tuesday, 18th March. John was full of praise for his employers, who were very supportive of him. “The DAA were wonderful to work with and their level of organisation and support in this project has been incredible. Before last year, they would not have undertaken a project like this, but they put their faith in me, and they were delighted with my work.

County is blessed with a vibrant multi-cultural mix, and yet, we hold no festival that embraces that mix. There are many different nationalities living in and around Swords, all with their own unique food dishes, traditional dress, languages and music, what a wonderful cocktail that would make,” he said. “After celebrating our St Patrick’s Day festival in Swords and all around the North County, so why can we not have a festival that celebrates the colourful diversity of multiculturalism in Swords?” The centre of our capital town is in need of a pickme-up and a face lift to bring back the spark it once held. The major footfall, such a festival would bring, is just the tonic the town centre needs; a big party that celebrates our multiculturalism,” Duffy

continued. “I would be very interested in hearing from the various cultural representative groups around Swords

and surrounds, who have a desire to see such a festival take place in the future. I know there has been some interest expressed by a few local councillors in such a festival happening, hopefully that interest remains,” he concluded.

worked closely with a committee of staff members to bring the idea to life. Inspired by last weekend’s Ireland vs France rugby match, the committee chose to add their own twist to the Haka ritual, in a bid to be triumphant. The pupils’ superb take on the Haka involved students acting as an angry mob of Ireland supporters, waving flags and performing the Irish Haka in a shamrock shaped formation, to try and intimidate a lone French supporter. “The school desperately needs new sports equipment, so we are hoping to be very successful in this competition,” says teacher and member of the organising committee, Tommy Duffy. “Our entry was a week in

Speaking to the County Leader, McGuire said, “There’s a huge lack of activities for younger people, apart from the excellent work that spots clubs provide.

However, for younger people, who are not into sports, there is nowhere for them to congregate and pursue hobbies and activities,” he said. McGuire is proposing that a designated area in the village is provided for them, like a youth cafe, where youngsters can come and congregate

The idea that vitality and energy would be introduced to the campaign by the European Fingal Groupings fielding a single candidate to front their County Council campaigns, may not quite work out in practice. Both the Greens and the Alde Groups have nominated two main candidates. It is unclear which of the Greens, should their Group be successful would in fact be nominated as the Commission President, while the Alde Group have already done an internal trade off with their second candidate Ollie Rehn, allowing the top spot go to Guy Verhofstadt, while Rehn will be promoted for another top job within the system. Drogheda Hospital No Longer An Option The overcrowding problem at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, has become so severe, that the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) is calling for the Major Disaster Protocol to be invoked at the hospital, due to severe overcrowding at that hospital. A total of 57 patients were waiting for an in-patient bed on Tuesday morning last, 11th March, resulting in hardship and inhumane conditions for both patients and staff. The INMO called this a “crisis that requires the hospital to go off call for at least 24 hours.” This worrying development has wide implications for people from the northern part of the region, especially Balbriggan, Skerries, Naul and other areas. Residents here would automatically use Our Lady’s in Drogheda, in the event of an emergency, given that it is twice as close to them as Beaumont Hospital. It must be remembered that these people are constituents of Health Minister, Dr James Reilly, and many will be wondering why their Minister is allowing this very dangerous situation to persist, placing them in imminent danger. The figure for the corresponding date last year, was 14 people waiting in Drogheda - a clear indication of the decline in hospital services in just 12 months.

No Funds Available For Balbriggan’s Railway Street

Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda

According to INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Tony Fitzpatrick: “The equivalent of two full wards were waiting for admission in the Emergency Department. The situation was extremely dangerous for patients and staff, who were deeply distressed at the recent level of overcrowding, especially as trolleys are now regularly overflowing to the adjoining corridors. They are concerned for the wellbeing of patients and their colleagues, as they endeavour to provide safe care to patients.” He continued: “An urgent review is required of bed capacity within the Louth/Meath Hospital Group and the availability of beds in the community. Also there is a requirement for additional community nursing resources in the area to assist in the discharge of patients from hospital,” he concluded.

amour” on the South Strand, adjacent to houses in Holmpatrick in Skerries and the Council’s commitment to repair the Springers bathing area in April. Byrne told the County Leader, “The Springers is an important bathing area in Skerries, not least because the Council, some years ago, installed award winning disabled access facilities at this location, so it’s repair is an important matter for all members of the community.” This area, as well as the equally popular Captain’s bathing area, were severely damaged in the post Christmas storms that ravaged the country. Byrne, however, bemoans the fact that “we simply don’t have money to repair areas like this, without having to go cap in hand to central government, simply because there’s never enough money within local government funds to address major failures in infrastructural projects.” Byrne continued, “Property tax should be allocated for this. If you pay money for one purpose, this needs to be ring fenced and allocated for this, instead of being diverted to other projects, like Irish Water,” he said. Byrne says that the Council expects that these repairs will be completed before the summer bathing season commences.

The community of Balbriggan have put much effort into revitalising their town centre, and that of Railway Street in recent months, particularly with the launch of Balbriggan’s Creative Quarter. However, now it appears there is no funding to carry out some recommendations issued in a report to revitalise Railway Street further. This is according to the County Council. The matter was recently brought up at a recent Council meeting, and the Railway Street, Balbriggan Council explained the background to the issue: “Following on from the publication of a Public Realm Plan for Balbriggan in 2011, the County Council, Balbriggan Town Council and the Heritage Council provided funding to carry out a consultation led design process for the future development of Railway Street entitled ‘Railway Street, a New Beginning. Projects for both the improvement of the building façades and the public

realm at Railway Street are identified. These projects, particularly the substantial public realm elements, require detailed costing to be undertaken and notwithstanding this, would be dependent on the availability of substantial funding.” The local authority went on to say that currently, no obvious source of funding for the projects recommended in that report are available, but that they would review the situation once funding did become available. “To date, no external funding sources have been identified. There are no obvious routes at present to apply for funding to Government Departments or agencies. We will continue to review the situation in case any new funding sources become available.” The County Leader directly contacted the County Council about this issue, and a spokesperson for the local authority responded by saying that they would be continuing to seek funding for the project: “It is planned to run the Public Realm Project, including the Railway Street element, on an ongoing basis in Balbriggan. It is intended to continue to seek funding for the implementation of the works on a phased basis over a number of years.”

Local Choir Goes From Strength To Strength The Fingal Gospel Choir (FGC) began when a group of friends with a shared love for singing decided to start their own choir for fun. It began in the kitchen of one of the members. They then needed a director so they asked Music Graduate David Flood from Swords, who had studied music, to direct. He accepted, and in December 2011, the FGC was born. In March 2012 the choir found an official practice room in the Applewood Community Centre in Swords. The choir generated a tonne of interest after performing for masses

After a busy year of performing for large mass services, charity fundraisers and Christmas events, the FGC took on their first international competition: the Sligo International Choral Festival. To their surprise, after this being their first competition, they took home the first place trophy in the SATB section, earning a place in the Finals along with four other choirs (out of 80 choirs in total). Following this, the hard working choir performed on the RTE1 televised Mass. The director and crew said they were “very impressed by their energy and performance. The FGC will be entering the Navan Choral Festival in May, and are currently in a competition run by Derek Mooney (RTE Radio 1) to support the Blind Boys of Alabama in the National Concert Hall. This talented bunch are a community choir, with one goal: to bring music to the local community and beyond, and to enjoy the gift of music together.

YOURVIEW With reporter Emily Nicholas

Q:

With our national saint’s day just over, we asked the question: Does St Patrick’s Day express our Irish heritage to the fullest?” Emily Nicholas

Gary Martin, Swords. “I don’t think it does anymore. I mean it’s not doing the kids any good with all the drinking, I know it doesn’t do me any good.”

Betty Berk, Raheny. “I do think it’s a good way to express our heritage because we’re Irish and it’s a holiday.”

Ursula Cooper, Swords. “I do think it is, because its part of culture like every country has.”

Marie Barry, Swords. “I definitely think it does. I think it’s a great celebration and it’s a big thing where I’m living in Melbourne and everywhere really.”

Valerie Dunne, Swords. “I’m English and I love it. We’ve started a parade in Swords and I think it’s a very good way of celebrating the Irish culture.”

Josh Vault, Santry . “I think it’s become more of a drinking day and an excuse to get drunk.”

Rose Joyce, Swords. “I do. I like St Patrick’s Day. It’s a good way to bring everyone together.”

John Albany, Swords. “I do. It’s the best craic you’ll ever have.”

Bernie Clark, Swords. “Yes, I do. But for some people, I just think it’s a day for boozing. I see the older generation are more into the St Patrick celebration, but I think the younger people are into the celebration, where the drink and the pub is concerned, that’s just what I think.”

Dominic Molloy, Feltrim “Yes. It does because it’s tradition.”

Sharon David, Swords. “I think it does, but It’s not as good as it used to be. I’ve been here for the past 13 years and it doesn’t seem to be as popular anymore.”

Pamela Boland, Swords. “Yes I do think it does, but I think it probably has turned into something more. It’s a drinking session for everybody. But I do think it’s a good celebration.”

Patra Barry, Donabate. “I live in France and I come home here every year during February and March. Last year, I was coming in on the DART during St Patrick’s Day, and the amount of young people that were drunk was absolutely disgusting. It’s so sad. It’s become just a drinking thing and it’s so sad to see youngsters especially.”

Davis Gets The Ball Rolling Balbriggan man Richard Davis (NP) has decided to enter the local election race this coming May. He will be going in as an independent candidate for the Balbriggan Ward, and to date, is the youngest candidate to run in the local elections. He said he wanted to go into the race on his own, to ensure that he wouldn’t be constricted in any way. “I felt it was extremely important that I have my own independent voice in the upcoming

He said he will be willing to tackle any issues that matter to those in the Balbriggan and surrounding areas, and is passionate about wanting to be a difference in the area. “I really want to see some of the rural roads sorted out as some are in an appalling condition,” he continued. “I also want to push for improved Garda facilities in the town and more youth development, but the main thing is that I’ll be there to listen to the people of Balbriggan, and what matters to them.” As the current youngest candidate in the running (he’s just 27 years old), he said locals have been extremely receptive so far. “People have been great, and I’ve been told that it’s nice to see a fresh face around.” Even though it’s his first time in the election race, he said that this doesn’t faze him. “It just spurs me to keep going,” Davis concluded.

Swords School Set To Expand A 1.7 hectare site at St Finian’s Community College in Swords has been successfully rezoned to allow the Swords school to expand. The school’s expansion plans have been handed a boost after the rezoning of the land needed to extend its facilities was passed by the County Council. The variation to the Fingal County Development Plan was passed recently by councillors, changing the zoning of the unused tract of land from Open Space (OS) to Community Infrastructure (CI). The new zoning allows development on the land to ‘provide for and protect civic, religious, community, education, health care and social infrastructure’. The purpose of the rezoning is to allow for the expansion of St. Finian’s Community College. The current Development Plan zoning ‘OS’ does not enable use for education purposes. mRezoning the lands to ‘CI’ permits ‘education’ use and will enable the proposed expansion of the existing school. During a period of public consultation on the rezoning, no objections were raised by the public and councillors at the February meeting of the full council, unanimously approved the move. Local councillor Gerry McGuire (Lab), asked that the new facilities the school will be “able to provide on the land, be made available for shared use by the community and the council’s head of planning, said the ETB, who run the school, were amenable to that.”

As Mother’s Day is just around the corner, it’s time to think of the woman that deserves to be spoilt rotten for the whole day. If you’ve forgotten about it until now, don’t worry, you have time to find her the perfect gift. You could either go down the traditional route or go for something different, such as a homemade gift (get the grandchildren to help you make the card), or simply plan to spend the day together. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you mark the day in some way (big or small) for her as your hard-

working mother definitely deserves it.

Hotels There are a vast array of gorgeous hotels located here in the North County that will make Mother’s Day a fantastic day out, for her and the rest of the family. Most mammies enjoy the simple pleasures in life, so for example, a lie in and breakfast in bed on the day will go down a treat. Her favourite hotel is the ideal destination for this. The friendly and helpful staff in our North County hotels will cater to your mother’s every need and make sure she gets treated like a queen for the day. If she’d love a day out with the family, the hotel will most likely offer some great lunch and dinner deals for the whole family to enjoy.

Treat her to a Spa Experience Treat her to a day at a spa. Plenty of the hotels here in the North County will also have spa treatment facilities, so make sure you enquire about these if you’re booking a room etc. This is the ultimate self indulgence, and something your Mam would most likely never buy for herself, so imagine her surprise when she discovers she’s the one to get pampered for a day? It’s

an ideal present and she’ll be the one who gets waited on for a change!

Pharmacy Treats Your local pharmacy will have a range of treatments, deals and gift ideas for your mother to enjoy. There will usually always be a range of beauty products that you can have specially gift wrapped as a nice surprise. What about a bottle of her favourite perfume? Your local pharmacy will have a vast amount of various fragrances on offer, just make sure you get her the right one! Most pharmacies around the North County will also have a nail technician. They usually also have a qualified beauty therapist on hand to offer your mother a range of treatments. Unsure of which particular treatment she might like? A gift card will solve this problem for you and this way she can pick and choose as she likes.

Enjoy A Day Out Whether it be a lovely lunch in one of our many fine hotels, or enjoying family orientated activities together, the new Spring season means you can all (hopefully!) enjoy the nice, fresh weather and have her indulge her love of the outdoor activities such as gardening, If your mother is into plants and fresh

The medium to long term plans for the R132 (BRT/Metro North) provide for a significant reconfiguration of this roundabout, including improved pedestrian facilities. The provision of any significant pedestrian crossing facilities at this location in advance, would involve major investment and is not considered appropriate pending a decision on the above mentioned medium – long term proposals.”

Smith Wants Healthcare Issues Resolved Swords local election candidate Duncan Smith (Lab), recently organised an event in St Colmcille’s GAA Club in Swords, in which Minister for Primary Care Alex White, confirmed that free GP care for under sixes will be up and running this summer. The Minister explained to Swords residents that almost 240,000 children and their parents across the North County and beyond will benefit from this innovative public health policy and that free GP care for under sixes is an important first step to remove the barrier of GP fees for everyone across the locality. Smith told the County Leader that according to him, the predominant issue coming up on the doorsteps across Swords since January has been clarity over the Free GP Care for under sixes and whether the Government had the resources to honour this vital healthcare commitment. “I would like to thank Minister White on behalf

Local TD Brendan Ryan (Lab), has welcomed the launch of a €15m fund that will see vacant local authority housing redeveloped and brought back into use as social housing. Ryan told the County Leader: “Local authorities must submit their proposals for the funding by the 28th March. Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan, who has worked hard to alleviate the shortage of social housing, will then allocate the funding as soon as possible. The fund

should see about 500 housing units that are now vacant, brought into use for families around the North County later this year.” “Increasing the supply of social housing is a priority and needs to be accelerated. One of the most frustrating elements of the past few years is seeing void or unoccupied housing stock lying boarded up around the locality for months and months at a time,” he continued. “It is so frustrating for families on waiting lists to see potential homes lie vacant for extended periods of time. This funding will go some way towards speeding up the process of fixing up vacant units and I will be writing to the County Council to ensure they apply to the fund before the 28th of March.”

Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has said the Government’s new compulsory health insurance plans amount to nothing short of a major tax increase that will hit thousands of families across the North County. Senator O’Brien has described as “alarming” the recent revelaSenator O’Brien tions that the Health Minister, James Reilly’s Universal Health Insurance plan could see people forced to pay €1,600 a year for compulsory health insurance. “The Government has been incredibly misleading about the cost of its Universal Health Insurance plans. It now seems that individuals could be forced to pay basic health insurance bills of €1,600 a year, without any option to cut down on costs or opt out. For local families, the cost will be multiples of that. This is nothing short of a major tax increase,”O’Brien told the County Leader. “This is causing alarm among the tens of thousands of people across the North County who have been forced to drop their private health insurance over the past number of years, because they simply cannot afford it. Under this proposal, they will be forced to pay for Universal Health Insurance,” he continued. “This is an unfair burden on local families, who are already struggling with unmanageable household bills. The Government seriously needs to rethink this and examine the impact it will have on people who are already struggling to make ends meet.”

Balbriggan Tidy Towns are launching a new awareness campaign to highlight the difference between recycling and re-using waste items. There are new marks this year in the Tidy Towns competition for raising awareness of reusing, rather that recycling. Tidy Towns PRO, Zoe Nelson told the County Leader, “Over the last decade we have become very familiar with the Green recycling bin, where we place our waste cardboard and plastics for processing. However, reuse is different as it does not require any further processing to make the item useful again,” she said. She went on to explain how this will

For example, car boot sales are great places for people to bring items they are finished with. Those attending the car boot sale then find valued new uses for such varied items.” “Also on the main street, we have four charity shops which take in unwanted clothes and household items and resell them to new owners. This serves two purposes; it helps to raise money for the charities but also helps to keep items circulating in the community.” “We have all heard the phrase ‘one person’s rubbish is another person’s gold’ When thinking about reusing items, nothing could be more true,” she concluded.

New Quit Smoking Initiative Launched

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

This is your week. Everyone seems to love you, offers abound and you’re feeling more optimistic than you have for ages. However, certain issues will have to be addressed involving olved ones or associates.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

Being something of a daydreamer, you’re seldom short of ideas. But what is ushered in this week will be so abrupt and intense that you’re at a loss about what to do. Have no fear, all will become clearer with time.

ARIES

A nationwide quit smoking pharmacy service for the public was recently launched by the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly. The service, which is available in community pharmacies both locally and nationwide now, is supported by the Irish Cancer Society and the HSE. As part of the service, pharmacists will assist smokers around the locality by giving advice on quitting and the health-related bene-

fits. Pharmacists can also give accurate information and advice on options for quitting, including nicotine replacement therapies, which have been proven to double smokers’ chances of success. Speaking at the launch of the service, Minister Reilly told the County Leader, “This is a great initiative by pharmacists who are using their training and skills to help smokers make that quit attempt. Let there be no doubt - the single best thing a

Wildlife Talk In Balbriggan

You’ve decided how you’ll respond to recent exciting ideas or offers. Others, however, are uncertain. Consequently, while you’re ready to take action, the week will be spent in winning them over to your ideas.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

Accept the fact that nearly every day of this week brings surprise developments, both with colleagues and loved ones. You will have to be wide awake to deal with all, but by keeping your priorities in tact will help.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

Surviving this week’s dilemmas requires you to remain open-minded about alternatives. Others may insist on commitments, but circumstances and others’ priorities change frequently - and be at completely different odds.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

An opportunity for change. By the week’s close, both you and those around you realise that much of what you’ve viewed as reassuring, was really keeping you from exploring certain thrilling, if intimidating, offers.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

You’d like to settle certain differences peaceably - but that’s unlikely. In fact, everyone has something to say - and mostly it’s about having their own way. What you can do is keep your cool for the present - until later.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Nobody is more thorough about details than you, which means you’re rarely caught out by events. But there’s no way you could have foreseen this week’s developments - which could bring overwhelming changes.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

You’re already under pressure from others to make decisions. However, these don’t necessarily serve your best interests. The time might just be right for a fresh approach - that would appear to satisfy all concerned.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

Golden opportunities aren’t always initially recognisable for what they are. This is well-illustrated by your reaction to this week’s exceptional events. So much so, that you’re unsure of what is wise and what is not.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

Certain individuals are anxious either to shirk their responsibilities or blame you. However, confronting them just now might not be wise. The emphasis is on strategy, and it might be better to await another day.

Capricorn

Dec 22 - Jan 19

You’ve been examining various elements of your life, considering whether any attitudes or beliefs are holding you back. Now you find what they are. However difficult, talking them over with someone close will help.

Joe and his wife are talented gardeners and have painstakingly created a variety of unique environments in their garden to attract mammals, birds and insects. The series of talks this winter has been extremely successful and would not have been possible without the organisational skills of outgoing chairperson Michael O’Connor. Michael is an integral part of Balbriggan Horticultural Society and has been Chairperson for well over a decade. The members wish to express a big vote of thanks to Michael for his valued dedication and service to the society over the years. However Michael will still be playing an important role on the committee in 2014 as he has taken on the role of Treasurer. The ‘Wildlife in the Garden’ talk may be of special interest to second level students studying horticulture models in transition year.

The pace of jobs growth over the last year has been very encouraging,” he continued. “A number of specific measures will be implemented this year to broaden jobs growth throughout the North County and beyond, including a strategy for the construction sector and a tourism plan to build on the success of the Gathering.” “While the number of people out of work in the North County is falling, we still have a long way to go. But I am confident that we can build on jobs growth in the year ahead,” Farrell concluded.

Keelings Strawberries Ripe For The Taking!

Pictured here is Sile Seoige tasting Keelings delicious strawberries.

Galway girl Sile Seoige was delighted to sample the first harvest of Keelings Irish strawberries. Keelings are local fruit growers based in St Margarets. Speaking from Keelings strawberry glasshouse, David Keeling told the County Leader, “Strawberries are one of the fruits most widely associated with the Keelings brand and so the first harvest is always special to everyone at Keelings and marks the beginning of a new growing season. This year’s Keelings Irish strawberry harvest is the earliest ever to ripen. This year we have an exclusive early Spring variety, which, in addition to new growing techniques we’ve adopted, has resulted in this extra early start to the Irish season.” To ensure Keelings’ Irish strawberries reach their customers in the best possible condition Keelings ensure that once harvested they are stored in carefully controlled atmospheric and chilled conditions.

Balbriggan Scouts Visit Baldonnell Aerodrome The 34th and 161st Balbriggan Cubs recently paid an exciting visit to Baldonnell Aerodrome. They group had a fantastic tour of the Aerodrome under the guidance of Sargent Alan Campbell and Rory Gaynor (both

former scout leaders in Balbriggan). The cubs placed a neckerchief on a simulator dummy representing the challenge to all fellow scouts as statues nationwide will be getting decorated in scouting

neckerchiefs, in honour of “Founder’s Day”. They got to see all of the planes, including the Government jet and were given a demonstration of the fire department water cannon. They were also given a presentation on how they manage wildlife around air space at the Aerodrome. According to the group, it was a great day for all involved.

Recently the Fingal Workshop for Dyslexia held their Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser in the Wright Venue in Swords. The Workshop runs in St. Oliver Plunkett’s School every Tuesday evening and operates under the umbrella of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland. Its aims are to improve awareness of dyslexia and to provide education and support for children with reading difficulties from 3rd Class to Junior Certificate level. Students avail of tutorials, classes, oral language development and I.T. skills. The need for the services of the Fingal Workshop

grows all the time but unfortunately resources are very limited which why this event was held. Thirteen couples took part on the night, many of whom were Workshop Teachers, St. Oliver Plunkett’s Teachers, parents and relations of the pupils. The dancers trained in Backstreet Dance Studios for six weeks prior to the night, learning choreography for their on-stage performance! Judges on the night were Yvonne Keating, Senator Darragh O’Brien and Head Choreographer Nikki Whelan. Host for the evening was Nicky Byrne. It was a fantastic night of entertainment with Stephen Mac Donagh and his wife Patricia crowned the overall winners. A total of €21,500 was raised and this money will be invested in resources and equipment for the children in the Workshop.

North County Celebrates In Style Continued from page 1 The highlight of the day was the appearance of St Patrick at the parade. Skerries has a real connection with our patron saint, as he lived on St Patrick’s island for a time. Folklore has it that locals stole his goat and, in anger, he jumped from the island to the shore, where his footprint is still visible. The Coastguard helicopter lifted the modern version of St Patrick,

off the island, as he went in search of the missing goat. The RNLI then helped him ashore, as he’s a pretty old guy at this stage and can’t jump like before! Skerries close neighbour, Balbriggan had their usual parade, with lots of colour and enthusiasm. The well organised committee here laid on plenty of entertainment for all to enjoy. Local sports clubs added to the colour and atmosphere of the parade, as one organisation tried to outdo their neighbours in a colourful day, full of fun and banter. There is no doubt that we, in the North County, have become expert in enjoying ourselves and St Patrick’s Day was a fine example of this, where family and community values were the real winners, on a day to remember.

Balbriggan School Finally Achieves Active Flag After a lot of fit and active work over the last number of months, the staff and pupils of St. Teresa’s School in Balbriggan were finally awarded their ‘Active Flag’ for their school. They have a long tradition of being an active and energetic school. The school prides itself on providing the children in the school with a broad range of opportunities to partake in fun enjoyable physical activities in

the safe surroundings of the school environment. While reflecting on all the activities that are currently ongoing on in the school it was decided to apply for the Active Flag. The Active Flag is awarded to schools who strive to achieve a physically active school community. Over the last 18 months the school has introduced and implemented new initiatives to create a more physically active school. Some of these initiatives

were Show and Tell Days, Bokwa Dancing, Skipping Zones in the yard and Walk and Cycle to School Days. The school also had a really fun and enjoyable Active Week in March 2013. The school’s application to the National Active School Committee was successful. The school had a wonderful launch of its beautiful new flag on at a ceremony attended by pupils, parents and invited guests from local sporting organisations. St. Teresa’s Balbriggan is now known as one of the most active schools in Ireland and they hope to stay as fit and active as possible.
