Community Prays For Local Hero People from all over the North County have been left stunned by the tragic loss of the Rescue 116 Coast Guard helicopter last week off the coast of Co. Mayo, where local man, Ciaran Smith is among those missing at sea.

Special report by Patrick Finnegan and Leslie Murphy The tragedy has claimed the life of pilot, Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, who died shortly after being found. The three other crewmen are missing, including winchman, Ciarán Smith (38), from Oldtown, a father-of-three. Ciaran lives in Oldtown with his wife, Martina and their three young daughters and is a sports fanatic; being actively involved in his local GAA club, Wild Geese. The funeral of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick was held last Saturday amid emotional scenes, where her colleague, Cathal Oakes said it was apt that the last aircraft she flew was called ‘Queen of the Sky’ Prayers were said for the other three crew members, including Ciaran Smith. Ciaran was a big part of a small community and got involved in lots of local activities and risked his life to assist communities as a member of the Irish Coast Guard. In a show of wonderful community spirit, a group of over 30 volunteers responded to a facebook appeal from the local GAA Club, Wild Geese, of which Ciaran is a member, to travel to Blacksod in Co Mayo to assist local gardai by walking the shoreline in an effort to find vital clues as to what caused this tragedy. It is also reported that many people from all over the North County are travelling to Mayo on an ad hoc basis to add their contribution to the search effort. With calmer weather expected later in the week, and the presence of the Irish Lights Vessel Granuaile, with very sophisticated features and equipment, there are renewed hope that vital clues will be discovered. A Candle light vigil for Ciaran and the rest of rescue 116 crew members took place on Saturday night at Oldtown Church.

Oldtown man and Coast Guard winchman, Ciaran Smith

A close friend of Ciaran’s, who did not wish to be identified, in respect to Ciaran’s family at a very difficult time, spoke glowingly of his friend when he told the County Leader, “Ciaran is an absolute gentleman and I know him very well. He was originally from Kinsealy, but when he settled down here in Oldtown after marrying Martina, he become totally involved in the local community here.” The brave rescue worker was a keen cyclist and he completed a 2,000km Race Around Ireland event for charity in 2015, coming in sixth place.

He undertook the gruelling seven-day challenge for charity, raising €10,000. “His father-in-law Aidan Brennan, his wife Martina and his brother were also involved and travelled all around Ireland supporting him. This was an endurance race, with practically no rest. Undertaking an event like this just typifies Ciaran; always giving to those in need, always with a smile and a joke, his friend said. Most of the locals in Oldtown know Ciaran well and they revealed that he is a dedicated family man and he and his family are in their thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. They all concur with his friend that he is a real gent and a wonderful family man “It is just absolutely shocking. I know Ciaran’s family is still holding out for the small hope he is going to be found alive. Local Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has expressed his sympathies with the families, friends and colleagues of the Rescue 116 Coast Guard helicopter crew. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick and of the three other missing crew members of the Dublin Coast Guard, who are anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. “Local crew member, Ciarán Smith from Oldtown has worked to serve and protect our community for over 15 years. It is difficult to imagine the pain that Ciarán’s wife Martina and their three young children are experiencing at this time,” he said. “The men and women of the Irish Coast Guard and in all our emergency services, put their lives on the line for us 24/7, 364 days of the year. Living by the coast we see the coast guard on a regular basis carrying out exercises and emergency call outs. We almost take it for granted.” “I would also like to pay tribute to the entire Coast Guard crew, many of whom have been taking part in the massive search for their colleagues, which is another testament to their strength and professionalism. This tragedy is a sad reminder of the risks the

emergency services face every day to keep us safe,” concluded O’Brien. Local senator, Dr James Reilly also expressed sympathy to the family of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick who tragically lost her life this week while working in a job she loved. Senator Reilly said last week’s tragic incident off the west coast had left all across North County Dublin deeply saddened. “Dara Fitzpatrick died doing a job she loved. She was a true hero. During her role as a Coast Guard worker, she put her own safety at risk in treacherous conditions and saved lives across the country. Her colleagues have told of the exemplary role she set and lived up to. “Most of all, she was a loving mother, sister and daughter. She represents the best of Irish life and is someone that will always be held in the highest esteem,” Senator Reilly said. “My thoughts are with the family of Ciaran Smith from Oldtown and the extended community in Oldtown as they come to grips with this tragedy and wait for news from the ongoing search mission.” “The families of Mark Duffy and Paul Ormsby are also in my thoughts, as are their colleagues and friends in the rescue services in the Irish Coast Guard, the local RNLI services at Skerries, Howth and Swords and all other stations. We are all the better for their brave work across the country.” “Rescue 116 was a regular reassuring sight in the North County. It’s extremely sad that this wonderful crew appear to have to lost their lives in such a tragic incident doing what they loved - helping others selflessly and ultimately, tragically in this case. “Their courage must be saluted and admired in a society that sometimes is obsessed with everything monetary.” “We cannot put a price on the service these individuals gave to their community and the ultimate sacrifice they have made serving their country,” he concluded.

Skerries Welcomes Public Access Defibrillators Exciting news for Skerries residents this week as the Skerries Community First Responders have installed 2 brand new defibrillators, located at Gerry’s supermarket and Dowling Electrical. This will give the first responders 24 hour emergency access to the new equipment. These are the second and third defibrillators to be installed in Skerries by the volunteer group, with the first being located at Blue Bar and only having accessibility during regular business hours. One volunteer, Jill Attley spoke to the County Leader and in a statement told us why this project is such a vital addition to the Skerries locality,“ The

By Shauna Carson reason we put this group of volunteers together is because in Ireland, 5,000 people die each year from cardiac arrest, thirteen people every day. These people are going about their daily lives, at home, at work, shopping, at sports events and many collapse and die without warning.” The voluntary funding dependant group are planning to install two more of these 24 hour access units this year to complete their aim of a total of five units around their local Skerries area. These installations are a much needed and welcome addition to the local community and have been spon-

sored by many of the local businesses. With a total of 35 fully trained volunteer first responders on their rota, they have a direct link to the ambulance service while on call. When someone dials 999/112 suffering from Chest pain, Breathing difficulty, Choking, Stroke or a Cardiac related incident an alert is sent to the community first responders on duty and they receive directions to where the incident has taken place. This can prove a key element when dealing with situations that require immediate medical attention. However the installation of the emergency equipment will now give these generous volunteers access to

Green Light For Malahide School Local Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell has said that, regarding the new school building for St. Oliver Plunkett’s National School, Malahide, the Department of Education and Skills (DES) has now issued a letter of intent to builders, which indicates that the project is ontrack to begin construction this summer. Farrell told the County Leader, “I am delighted with news that the DES has now issued a letter of intent to builders for the development of the new school building for St. Oliver Plunkett’s. It is great news for pupils, parents, teachers and the wider local community that the project is now on-track to begin construction this summer. We have had many false starts in the past, however, we are now in the final stages before construction begins.” “As a past pupil of the school, I am pleased that the delivery of the new school building is now in sight. I would like to commend everyone involved with the school, the Board of Management, the Principal and teachers, and of course, the parents, who have worked so hard over the past few years to make this project a

By Leslie Murphy reality. With the letter of intent to builders having finally been issued, all major hurdles the project has faced in the past have been overcome. The local community in Malahide have waited too long for the delivery of this new school building. The development of the new, state of the art, school building for St. Oliver Plunkett’s is of the utmost importance to ensure our children receive their education in an environment which is conducive to their learning.” Concerned Malahide resident, Sharon O’Leary whose children attend the school told the County Leader, “ Yes it’s great but I think the location should be somewhere else. There is not enough parking for the amount of children in the school. The idea of the new school did not seek universal agreement and as one of the biggest primary schools in the country this is a big oversight. The Gardaí and traffic warden monitor the traffic control constantly and it gets to the stage on some days people are parking recklessly.”

Hide Project Launched At Balleally In 2007, artist Garrett Phelan was selected by the County Council, to imagine and conceive a public art project, as part of the Council’s Public Art Programme funded through the Irish State’s Per Cent for Art Scheme. Last week, after 10 years, The Hide Project was officially launched at the former landfill site at Balleally near Lusk in a ceremony that included County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler, Chief Executive Paul Reid and Caroline Cowley (Public Art Coordinator, Fingal County Council) along with local public representatives and members of the public. It s an artwork inspired by the artist’s own personal history with the coastal area of the North County, in particular, the magnificent ecology of the Rogerstown Estuary, an area renowned for its bird life. The Hide Sculpture, situated on a former

landfill site at Balleally, is a largescale permanent sculpture consisting of a gateway, pathway, surrounding foliage and fauna and a fixed structure adjacent to the Rogerstown Estuary. It is a work of art that provides a service to the visitor as a fully functioning observation point for viewing a wide variety of the estuary’s roosting birds. It will function as a space for conversation, contemplation, education and exploration into the world of art, nature and politics. The Hide Sculpture is cast in dyed green concrete with a hyper-realistic wooden texture finish. The artist has hand carved the wooden interior with symbols associated with the site and the recurring themes within his own work. The practice of ornithology has been a strong feature of Phelan’s work in the

5 Ways to Save For Travel You Haven’t Thought Of Have you ever created a budget for a holiday and noticed a huge gap between what you need and what you’re earning? You’d be surprised to learn that there are a ton of ways to save, some of which you might have completely forgotten about or By Darren O’Reilly haven’t even dreamed of! I’ve compiled just 5 ways you can save for your trip abroad

GET BACK TO THE BASICS Create a budget of everything you spend monthly. Now, highlight everything you NEED in red (like food, rent, transportation) and highlight everything you WANT in green (shopping, salon treatments, etc). Try to cut out those things that are highlighted in green, or at least until after your trip. You’ll not only learn how to live simply but will have a lot of extra in your wallet!

GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR WORKOUTS Getting proper exercise might just be one of those things you need, but that super expensive Pilates class isn’t. Cancel that gym membership and find an affordable way to work out. Run outdoors, train with a friend or try watching YouTube videos instead

BE THE DESIGNATED DRIVER Instead of sitting at home on a Friday night watching reruns, why not make sure everyone gets home safe (and make a little extra money doing it)? Surely you’ve heard of Uber. This ride share app

pays a good amount of money to take people from A to B. You can switch the app on and off whenever you want and can make a bunch of money during your free time you would have otherwise spent doing nothing.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CREDIT CARD BENEFITS If you’re the type to pay off your credit card every month, opening up a new credit card could be very beneficial! Credit cards have plenty of benefits including travel related ones. Sure, opening up too many credit cards can hurt your credit, but one or two is very safe and worthwhile! Just make sure you sign up for the right ones (and make sure you pay them off monthly)!

SELL YOUR THINGS When was the last time you used that 1st generation iPad? What about that old bracelet your ex gave you? Time to sell everything that’s holding you back (or cluttering your room). Just make sure you sell your things on the appropriate platform. Try Ebay for collectables or expensive items and Donedeal for clothes and furniture anything else that won’t sell right away.

Local Balbriggan Boy’s Whale Of A Tale Ruairi McAleer from Balbriggan couldn’t believe his luck when he was playing on the beach in Balbriggan and came across a whale fossil. The nine year old boy is a keen visitor to the beach and visits it almost every second day with his father Shane. Shane told the County Leader, “When Ruairi came home from the beach he was ecstatic and really excited. He loves to collect different things from the beach but I think this is his most impressive find. He is always on the lookout for treasure and I would describe him as a beachcomer. I was a fisherman for over ten years and that’s how I knew it was the fossil of a whale.” Locals of the North County are no strangers to the occasional view of whales in the Skerries, Balbriggan and surrounding areas. There have been many sightings of humpback whales along the coast over the years by locals and fishermen.

Used Spectacles For Charity

A used spectacles collection box for charity has been placed beside the elevator on the ground floor in the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords. The brainchild of Malahide Lions member Gerry O’Carroll, Swords and District Lions and Malahide Lions Clubs approached the Swords Mens Shed (SMS) who willingly undertook to produce the collection box, made by their members Patrick Haughton, Matthew Graham and Ken Cullen. Joe O’Donnell of the Pavilions Centre gave the go-ahead and the Lions got permission to locate it there. Used spectacle collection and recycling for the third world is one of Lions Clubs’ core activities involving clubs and support organisations in many countries. Used spectacles are routed, courtesy of parcel delivery service DPD Ireland, through the UK (Chichester Lions Club) and onward to Medico France in Le Harve. The spectacles are sorted, graded and made ready for use in countries, such as India, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Nepal, Bolivia and many more. Being able to see properly makes a huge difference for those with impaired vision. With a pair of glasses on them, they can participate fully in life’s activities: reading, learning, employment, watching TV or movies, activities we take for granted. The young get to learn in school. The older are less dependent on those with good sight, including children not attending any school, to look after them. Pictured at the Used Spectacle Box collection point for charity, an initiative of Malahide and Swords Lions Clubs and The Lions Clubs ask for your Swords Mens Shed, at the Pavilions Shopping Centre Swords are Gerry O‚ÄôCarroll (Malahide Lions), John Boylan (Swords support; if you have old Lions), Joe O‚ÄôDonnell (Pavilions Shopping Centre), Sean Quigley (President Swords Lions), Ian Hunter (Pavilions Centre spectacles, drop them into Director), Mary McNamara (Vice President Malahide Lions), Patrick Haughton and Nicholas Keys (Swords Mens Shed), Joe the collection box in the McDonnell (Malahide Lions) and Maurice Kealy (Swords Lions) Pavilions.

Great Value Bouquets and Flower Arrangements for Mother’s Day

Pictured are the Fingallians Under 14 Girls team who recently received a set of new jerseys sponsored by local Swords company ‘Swords Orthodontics’. The Fins ladies are currently preparing to participate in the Féile Peil na nÓg competition in April and are still on a high after winning their championship late in 2016. Liam Ó Culbáird of Fingallians GAA presented a framed jersey to Dr. Stephen Murray of Swords Orthodontics. Liam commented, “all voluntary groups, such as the GAA, depend on the support and generosity of local businesses. We are delighted to have the support of Swords Orthodontics. Dr. Stephen Murray said, “we are delighted to be associated with a successful club such as Fingallians. We wish the Under 14 girls well in the upcoming Féile competition and we hope the club, and indeed the county, has another successful year. “

Member First Annual School Quiz Recently, Member First Credit Union (MFCU) organised and facilitated the Annual School Quiz competition at local level partnering with schools from Swords, Artane, Coolock, Donnycarney, Beaumont and Raheny. This was the biggest quiz to date with over 350 children competing. The competition kicked off on the 5th February in Fingallians GAA club for the Swords schools. The quiz consisted of 10 rounds of 6 questions, with some fun, goodies and a talent show in between! They had nearly 30 tables on the day and only the top 6 teams could advance to the finals. The Swords champions were: St. Cronans SNS, Holy Family SNS, St. Colmcille’s BNS and St. Brigid’s NS.

The second quiz of the week was facilitated in Parnells GAA club on the 8th February. This time schools from Artane / Coolock, Donnycarney / Beaumont and Raheny were pitted against each other. The same structure, questions and rules applied even though the quiz took place at 6pm after a long day at school for the participants! Another full house and 6 victorious teams: The final quiz of the week was held again in Parnells GAA club and the atmosphere was great. The cream of the crop entered battle as the top 6 teams from each quiz participated over another 6 rounds of 10 questions – new and more difficult for the final. This time the teams were competing for the top 3 places to proceed to the CUDA School Quiz Regional Finals, to be held in March. The scores were very tight throughout with only one point separating each of the top 3 teams in the end. A big congratulations to the local winners, who will go on to represent both Dublin and MFCU in the regional finals: 1st place – St. Cronans SNS, 2nd place – St. Brigid’s NS and 3rd place – St. Colmcille’s BNS.

Every mum deserves to be thoroughly spoilt every once in a while and what better day than Mother’s Day to do this. The main lady in your life ought to be shown just how much she means to you and your family, so take Mother’s Day this year as the perfect opportunity to treat your mum to the VIP treatment. Indulge her with a trip to the hairdressers, or maybe take her out for a delicious dinner at one of North County’s

Poland Votes Against Their Own Polish Government sources say that, following the reappointment of their fellow countryman and former Prime Minister Donald Tusk, to the post of President of the European Council that they will play rough. The sources said, “One has to state it openly, EU policy turned out to be a policy of double standards and cheat. In an unusual development, the Polish Government attempted to unseat Tusk when his position came before the Council for renewal. Their Prime Minister wrote to her fellow twenty seven Council members stating, “President Tusk has failed to demonstrate adequate impartiality. He used his EU function to engage personally in a political dispute in Poland. We cannot accept such a conduct.” Appointments within the EU at such a major level as President would normally be made by consensus. It is unheard of for a member state to oppose the appointment of one of their own citizens to high office. It went to a vote with the result Tusk 27 - Poland 1. The Dutch election seems to indicate a continuing trend of the electorate stepping back from the Hard Right when it comes to casting their vote. The centre-right VVD party leader Merk Rutte said following the results “This was an evening when the Netherlands said ‘Stop’ to the wrong sort of populism.” President Junker also waded in welcoming the fact that the centre held.

It seems that Junker will almost be as pleased when the Presidential election is settled in France. The indications are that François Fillon, the centre right candidate will not win but Junker will be happy that Marine By Cathal Boland le Pen of the Front National is also unlikely to make it home. The Independent, Emmanuel Macron a former socialist cabinet member who stood down some time ago to contest the election continues to gain momentum. Some dirty tricks have been used against him, but to no avail. The left has collapsed and with Fillon’s difficulties, the race seems Macron’s for the taking. It seems unlikely that anything will now emerge to shift the voters away from him. Speaking of dirty tricks, I note that our minister Eoghan Murphy complains about a culture of “dangerous competition” among European financial capitals, stating that certain EU cities are “being very aggressive in trying to win business.” He said of them, “They are offering a back door to the single market, without the requirement to have capital to back up their entities in the European Union.” No doubt our Government will find a way to overcome such unfair competition.

O’Brien Happy With New Pension Protection Measures A Bill introduced in the Dáil by Fianna Fáil will provide greater pension protection for employees and ensure that solvent employers are not able to walk away from their obligations in relation to defined benefit pension schemes. Local TD, Darragh O’Brien (FF) told the County Leader, “The Pensions Bill 2017 will provide for an appeals mechanism where a pension scheme is being wound up by its trustees so that workers affected have a chance to protect their interests. It also specifies conditions for the winding up of defined benefit pension schemes. Over the past

number of years, we have seen many large, financially solvent companies, wind up their pension schemes, and jeopardise the future pension payments of their workers.” He continued, “Having worked in the pensions sector for 15 years before entering politics, I intend to continue on this course of trying to protect workers and pension scheme members’ rights and trying to ensure that unscrupulous employers will not remove people’s pension rights and the benefits they have built up over time. I also intend to continue fighting for redress for people such as the airport workers who lost up to 60 per cent of their pension benefits.” “I remain committed to fighting on this issue, providing more protection and rowing back on some of the retrograde steps that were taken over the past five years,” he concluded.

Garden Talk In Balbriggan

The village of Balrothery was met with a strange sight last weekend due to the sudden appearance of Leprechauns and three leaf shamrocks hugging the trees at both entrances to the village. The idea came from the members of Balrothery Community Association, who felt it would bring some light hearted interest to the St Patrick’s Festival time. The faces and hats were made by the schoolchildren from local Scoil Oilibhéar Naoifa and the shamrocks were made by the residents of Hampton Park Care Facility. While the scheme will be dispersed in as geographically balanced a manner as possible, I feel it is important that special consideration is given to rural North County and peripheral areas, particularly those suffering from a lack of internet access. It may seem ridiculous that such places exist in 2017 but the fact is, that in surrounding areas of Ballyboughal, Rolestown and Garristown WIFI accessibility is hindering the development of small and medium business enterprises.” “This scheme will bear huge benefits for the peripheral rural communities, giving disadvantaged individuals and areas access to the internet, giving local social enterprises access to a global market, generating employment in rural communities that people, particularly young people are being forced to leave, the benefits are endless.,” he concluded.

Now that spring is finally here and the good weather is looming, there is no better time to start those house renovations you’ve been putting off all year. It’s also a great time to get your house and garden in order and make changes. You can start picking those bright pastel colours that will really perk up your home this spring season. Even doing simple things like refreshing a coat of paint in the rooms will really brighten up your home. Change those dreary carpets and replace them with polished wooden floors or bright rugs. Your garden can be spruced up very easily too, simply by doing some simple clean ups and adding some new plants and flowers. GARDEN

Nothing says spring is here like your garden. It’s time to awaken your garden from its winter sleep and get out those spades and shovels and really make your garden shine with some new plants and flowers. For those who like DIY but without as much

hassle, it’s best to go and buy your potted plants in your favourite spring colours and plant them as they are. You will find all the supplies and materials you need in your local hardware store so you won’t have to go miles to spruce up the garden. Even just cleaning up all the weeds and old plants will really make a difference. If you need to engage the services of a professional landscaping company, there are many here in the North County to choose from

RECYCLING SKIPS

So now, the plans have been drawn, the paint has been bought, the kids are out and you’re armed with hammer and brush ready to go. But what to do with the broken floor tiles and garden litter, the damaged furniture, odd cuts of wood, bricks and blocks of differing dimensions and the varying other objects which can’t be conveniently thrown on the fire and the bin men aren’t around until next week, even though

54” Marble Fireplace with black granite insert & hearth and 5KW inset stove

your wheelie bin is overflowing already. The solution is the humble skip, being that skips are the most environmentally friendly and tidiest method of waste disposal for non hazardous materials. You call the hiring company, their truck drops the skip off, you fill it up, they pick the skip up, you wave your rubbish goodbye, it’s that simple. Recycling companies that hire out skips are a great way to ensure household waste can be reused, thus being friendlier to the environment and providing a cleaner, convenient service. Skip hire companies will deliver the empty skip, then remove the full skip to their depot to sort through the various bits and pieces to seek out and separate what can appear as a useable commodity. It’s something to bear in mind if you’re thinking of moving house or having a general clean up.

any other room of the house, so start off by trying to refresh with little things. So, get your towels updated and see if it’d be about time to get some new, different coloured ones. Find some matching storage boxes as that’s the one sure way to keep your bathroom clean. Organise the thick and heavy toiletries behind the shelves and replace the products with lighter ones. If there’s a little window in your bathroom, try changing to a new type of glass if you feel this is needed, or even just place some ornaments close to the window ledge.

LIVING ROOM

Spring brings people together, so make sure your living room is very welcoming to family and friends. Get rid of the thick and heavy cushions and replace them with some smaller, lighter ones. Place large plants on the corners of the room and by the window and get some smaller ones to fill the place elsewhere. Otherwise, keep the decoration spacious and light, even minimalistic, as well as all the fabric and colour choices. That includes the curtains, blinds and such but also in furniture. If you have no need to buy a totally new sofa,

you can always get a new cover for it to make it look brand new. You can also update the wall pictures and other pictures around the winter to suit the new season of the year. BEDROOM

Scrutinise the room for objects that appear to be unwelcoming or cold. For example, replace the candle sticks that have a wintry design for something spring-like. Also get rid of all kinds of clutter that you know won’t see the light of day for ages. Remember the sun can make your bedroom look so much brighter and bigger too, so pull up those blinds

and let the light in. Now is also a good time to change your cushion covers for something lighter, so you can keep the oh-so-cosy and warm coloured ones to wait for next winter and get something light instead. Silk, cotton or lace, sunny yellow, fresh green or sky blue, there’s so much to choose from. In the bedroom the curtains have a massive effect, so change them to something to get you up with the sunlight in the morning. Match them with the cushion covers or go minimalistic, i.e. with some translucent fabric, to create the airy feeling and fresh look to the room.

PLUMBING

It is very important to make sure that your boiler is fully serviced, which will save you money in the long run. There is also a safety issue here as well, as faulty boilers can be a health hazard. It is vital to make sure that you hire a good, reliable plumber, who will carry out this vital work at a reasonable rate, thus ensuring safety as well as peace of mind for you and your family. After a long hard winter, it is also advisable to have your piping checked to ensure everything is in full working order. BATHROOM
