and I would ask that anybody in the area who would be interested to contact me on jdeve65@gmail.com for more information. Others observed that had this defibrillator not been available, the consequences would have been unimaginable. The question many ask is why was it necessary to call the Pavilions to access the defibrillator in the first place.? What if the person was unavailable at the time.? Why are there no vital defibrillators on the main street in Swords and on the main streets of all of our towns? We are lagging behind much smaller rural communities, who have defibrillators clearly displayed prominently on their main streets. Swords, by population is the third largest town in Ireland, yet it lags behind much smaller town, in this regard. Similarly, Balbriggan has a very fast growing population, yet practically nobody there would know what to do, or where to turn, in the event of such a medical emergency on one of our main streets. Most sports clubs have defibrillators on their premises, because they realise the life saving function they provide. Alas, most of these are locked away for use within the club itself, and are not available for public use after hours. A spokesperson for Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance, Ian Lawless, who is based at Swords Fire Station was fully supportive of defibrillators being available on our main streets. He told the County Leader, “Early intervention is key in saving lives, and the easy availability of defibrillators is essential in this regard. People can be trained in using them, maybe through a community project. They’re not expensive to buy nowadays, and they will be even cheaper if they can contribute to saving a life,” he said.

Vote To Reduce Property Tax Welcomed Following a motion from the Fianna Fail members of the County Council, a vote to reduce the local property tax was passed with a large majority. Swords councillor, Darragh Butler told the County Leader about the consequences of the vote. He said, “On Monday 14th July, Fianna Fáil councillors put forward a motion to Fingal County Council recommending a 15 per cent reduction in the property tax for home owners in the area. This is the maximum reduction allowed under government regulations. The motion was passed, by 30 votes for, nil Cllr. Darragh Butler against, with seven abstentions. Recent media reports indicate that Fingal County Council are one of the few local authorities that can afford to reduce property tax. “This tax is anti-Dublin, where house prices are higher than in the rest of the country. Our county is a well managed one and I can envisage local authorities across the country reducing their property taxes, whether that can afford it or not. We have been named as one of only three local authorities in the country that can afford to reduce our property tax,” he said. He continued, “I’m of the opinion that all counties will jump to reduce this tax, whether they can afford it or not. If we had not voted for this reduction, we would be out of step with other councils, and it would mean we would be further subsidising these areas. The government has acted disgracefully here, by intimating that they will threaten to impose levies on us, should we reduce the tax.” he said.

One-Day Cricket International For Malahide Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF), has welcomed the announcement that Ireland will host England for a One-Day International at Malahide Cricket grounds on 8th May next year. This comes after the great success of the same fixture in September last year. O’Brien told the County Leader, “This is very positive news for the local economy, as 10,000 people are expected to attend this event at Malahide Cricket Club next May. This is the only international-sized cricket ground in the country, and it is proving to be very attractive for the sport.” “It was always my intention in securing the €450,000 investment in
the club that its refurbishment would attract new internationals. This will be the second such event, and I hope to see this continue into the future. Hosting a team like England in Malahide gives Dublin huge potential tourism opportunities, and a significant TV audience for the game. “This is an important announcement from Cricket Ireland. The One-Day International in Malahide comes before Stormont hosts Australia on August 27th. I’m glad to say the investment in the Malahide Cricket Club is paying off and bringing more people into the area, will be an important part of the sports landscape in the capital into the future,” he said.

By Patrick Finnegan of the Rapunzel Foundation Ponytail Campaign a couple of months ago. As soon as she heard you could donate your hair to make wigs for people living with hair loss, she wanted to donate her hair, knowing that some other person could benefit from her donation. Her mother Cathy told the County Leader, “She checked out the details online to make sure she was eligible, and when she realised her hair was the
correct length, she hounded me on a daily basis to make an appointment at one of the registered salons for donating your hair to the Rapunzel foundation. We made the appointment for the Gorgeous Hair Salon in Artane, where Donna looked after Edel very well.” “We are very proud of her and think she was very brave to do this. But Frederica does have the support of the Socialist block, which mandated France’s President Hollande to speak on their behalf in support of her candidacy. This 41 year old has real handson experience, having entered the Foreign Ministry in 2003, where she specialised in not only Iraq and Afghanistan, but also importantly the Middle East Peace process. It would take all those opposed to her nomination to combine together to stop her appointment, which is unlikely, even with Juncker expressing quiet opposition stating that someone of experience is required. There is speculation that Poland will soften their position, in an effort to secure the Council Presidency when the Council reconvenes on the 30th August. Juncker may also, at that stage, decide to embrace Ms Mogherini as this would assist him in achieving gender balance in the Commission College.

Extra Funding To Greatly Benefit Portmarnock Scouts The members of Portmarnock Scout Group were most definitely happy campers recently, after it was announced that they would be one of 24 local groups to receive funding from the Sports Capital programme. The group are to be given €200,000 to put towards the building of their new Scout and guide centre in Portmarnock. Recently, the group started the building of their new den, and six years of hard work,
fundraising and dedication were realised. No doubt this extra funding will make a huge difference to their project, and give them a much needed helping hand in completing the build. Peter O’Kelly, Group Leader of the Portmarnock group recently described the start of the build as a “dream come true.” According to the group, the centre will take 44 weeks to build and when completed

Peter also said that the facility can be used by the local people when it is not in use by the scouts, and it is hoped that groups from abroad may come in summer time for their annual activities. The group have said they will be continuing their fundraising regardless, and are immensely grateful for all the support they have received so far.

Club historian, David McKittrick spoke passionately about the rich history and legacy of this great club, as he spoke about the early years. “The founding fathers included Frank Lawless and Mike Dunne, a farmer, coursing enthusiast, allround sportsman and ardent Nationalist, who

was the first captain of the club. He was succeeded by John Dunne, who later emigrated to America and joined Major John McBride’s Irish Brigade, which fought for the Boers in the South African War.” The next prominent captain was Frank Lawless, whose work for Ireland and for the GAA. is fittingly commemorated in the Lawless Memorial Park, the club’s base here in Swords. He was prominent in the Sinn Fein movement, as well as the GAA and the Gaelic League during the uprising of 1916. He was second in command to Thomas Ashe at the battle of Ashbourne 1916. He was arrested in connection with the ‘German Plot’ and while in prison in 1918, was elected TD for
North Dublin. As chairman of the club, and with Bob Savage as captain, John Aidan McGuire as Treasurer and Peadar O Ceallaigh as Secretary, the club enjoyed a long era of prosperity and success. David went on to explain about difficulties in the early years. “In those halcyon days, transport to games for long distances was by Savage’s Long Car, or more often by shanks mare or bicycle. When the Fingal League was established by a group, including Frank Lawless, John Aidan McGuire, Jack Nugent, Paddy Maloney, John Rooney and Thomas Ashe, Fingallians were one the first league winners.” After the AngloIrish war and the Civil strife which followed, Michael Moran, Paddy
ished ambition in 1942, in winning the Dublin Junior Championship for the first time, beating O’Dwyer’s by one point in the final. That team of the early forties proved to be one of the most successful in the history of the club, winning every Fingal competition in 1942. It was captained by Nick Savage, whose father had captained a team of an earlier era. For the first time, the club was strengthened by the inclusion of players from
outside the parish, when units of the 7th Battalion were stationed in Collinstown and Brackenstown in the “emergency” during the years of World War II. With the loss of the soldier members at the end of the war, when they all returned to their homes, the team was considerably weakened and finally was forced to ask for demotion to Junior status and for a time after this, football was at a low ebb in the club.

Revival In The Fifties
This opened the floodgates, and the Intermediate championship was annexed in 1957, and thus regained senior championship status which they have held until 2011. One of the team members, Christy Jones went on to pursue an acting career on Broadway. In 1959, Seamus McKittrick lined out at corner forward in the All-Ireland minor final against Cavan, and is the first player from the club to win an All-Ireland medal.
Much of the credit for the revival of the club’s fortunes in the fifties must go to Jim (Bones) Howard, who took a keen interest in the juvenile section and developed the talents of some very good players, who later came together on the club’s first team. Among these was his son Tom, who played for the Dublin senior team. This team went to the Junior Championship semi-final in 1955, which they lost to Clann na nGael. The following year is regarded as a watershed in iconic 1956 Junior Championship winning team. Back row: J Dignam, C the club’s history, when the The Kenny, P Gargan, T Harrington, T Howard, P Moran, C Jones and P Markey. 1956 Junior championship Front row: T O'Scanaill, W Mongey, J Nugent, B Fahey, P Rogers, S O'Toole and B was won by Fins. The Sixties
The Seventies
The sixties started off well with the Minor team winning the Fingal league in 1961. Then in 1965, the senior team won the Fingal Championship and eight other tournaments in one season. In 1968, Patsy Markham and Sean Foley played for the Dublin Junior team. Patsy was then promoted to the Dublin Senior team, playing right full-back in his first game, which was against Longford.
Hard work put into the juvenile section in the early Seventies bore fruit with the emergence in 1976 of a very good Under 21 side, which won the Dublin Div. 2 North U-21 league twice, and the Fingal League U-21 twice. Most of the members of this team came together through the juvenile ranks, the most notable member of the group being Kieran Duff. The junior team went to the final of the Dublin Junior Championship in 1979,
and were somewhat unlucky to be beaten by one point by a very good Man O’ War side. In 1979, the dawn of a new era emerged, when Kieran Duff won an AllIreland minor medal with Dublin. The emergence of hurling at the club took place in the 1970s, when two Galway men, Sean Broderick and Tony Mills introduced the game, and set up a juvenile team. Many of these players would eventually go on to win league titles in the 1990s. Camogie was introduced to the club by Mena

The club senior team in the 80s, was considerably strengthened with the arrival in 1981 of Harry Keegan, the great Roscommon defender and All Star. The senior team had a notable year in 1982, winning the Fingal Championship that year and reaching the final of Division 2 of the Senior Football League, where they lost to Erin’s Isle in a replay. In 1984, the Dublin Senior League Div 2 was won, and the following year saw the team triumph in Division 1. The team was awash with players from other counties, like Laois, Cork, Donegal, and Galway. The Under 9 squad from the 1990s, featuring Paul Flynn in the centre of the middle row.
The Nineties In 1993, the Dublin Junior Football championship returned to Fingallians, when a team, captained by Declan Rickard claimed the title. The senior footballers won the Division 2 and the St Vincent de Paul tournament titles twice. In addition to Kieran Duff, the club had a number of other players who played for Dublin at Senior, Under 21 and Minor levels, including one year when the club had four representatives on the county minor hurling squad. In 1997 for the first time ever an adult hurling team was fielded and in 1999, the club won a junior hurling league, the Eddie Barron shield and an Under 21 B hurling championship.
Into The New Millennium With the new century, another addition to Fingallians has been Ladies football, which has gone from strength to strength. The club now has ladies teams at senior, junior and underage. In 2003, Fingallians won the Ladies Junior Championship, followed

by the Leinster title, before being beaten in the Al-Ireland club final. In 2004, the ladies won the intermediate championship and in 2013, they won senior league and championship double - a club first. The profile of this great club has been further enhanced by the outstanding performances of Paul Flynn, who has won All-Irelands in 2011 and 2013, as well as All Star awards during this time. He is regarded as one of the most influential players in the modern game. David McKittrick said, “Perhaps the most important part of the club is the Juvenile section. Every Saturday morning, over one hundred boys and girls are coached in our Nursery, and the many people who play their part in this work are laying the foundations for the ongoing success of the club. Who knows how many future Dublin stars are in the making?. Our new all-weather training facility will help to draw more juveniles to participate in Gaelic games, since parents are happy that their children are able to play and develop football and hurling skills in a safe environment in all kinds of weather.” Fingallians now field more
than 30 teams at all levels in football, hurling and ladies football. A significant step for Fingallians has been the appointment a full time coaches, who help around with teams

Clubhouse The early dressing rooms in Fingallians were railway carriages and the running water was available if it was raining. An important step forward in the provision of club facilities occurred in the mid seventies with the erection of a prefabricated building to act as clubhouse. This building served the members well, but was replaced by a fine clubhouse, opened on the 1st January, 1984 by the then Chairman Danny Kelly. This was the centenary year of both the club and the GAA and was a fitting commemoration on such a momentous occasion. A devastating fire destroyed the clubhouse in November 1998, and a new clubhouse was opened in January 2001
All Weather Facility The latest chapter in the development of Fingallians was marked by the official opening in February 2005 of the new All-weather training pitch. This wonderful
enclosed facility measuring 100 metres by 45 metres and fully floodlit, is a boost for the training and skill development of teams from juvenile to adult

ranks and is a major asset to the ongoing growth of Fingallians. It has been brought about by the trojan efforts of many club members in organising two major fund raising activities, a car draw and a hugely supported race night. The club received money from the Sports Capital Funding this year and they intend to
resurface the all weather pitch and to increase the playing surface for the children. The current population of the Swords area is in excess of 50,000. With those figures, it’s easy to see the importance of the role of Fingallians GAA Club in providing an outlet for active and healthy games for so many young people.

Lawless Memorial Park The establishment of the well-equipped Lawless Memorial Park deserves mention. The field was acquired from the Taylor brothers, Mark, Dick and Tommy, who not only met the committee reasonably, but generously guaranteed the purchase price in the Bank. Peadar O Ceallaigh, Cyril McGough and Paddy Moran were the negotiators on behalf of the club. As a result of the efforts of a hard working committee, the entire debt on the Park was cleared off in the short space of two years. Down through the years, a lot of work has gone into improving and maintaining the pitch, acknowledged as one of the finest pitches in the country. A lot of the credit for the condition of the pitch goes to the late Peter McKittrick Snr, the hardworking groundsman for many years. In recent years, there has been extensive work carried out in regenerating the pitch to ensure that it continues to be one of the best playing surfaces in the country. The development of the new all weather facility meant that the main pitch was moved by over 20 yards. The main pitch has hosted thousands of games over the years, and still only requires the minimal amount of maintenance to bring it back to normal at the end of every playing season. David said, “We have added a training / warm up area to the side of pitch, alongside a running track and practice wall which incorporates hurling and football. There have been two new dugouts added, along with the viewing bank being made more accessible for people to enjoy games from outside the pitch.” “The main pitch has undergone major surgery with the inclusion of floodlights, new dugouts, electric score boards and new fencing and goal post added to bring it up to inter county standard ground. We have been granted
inter county status on our ground, which means that we can host any inter county games if offered them. Last year, we finished the project by building a ball wall area and a running track and warm up area beside the main pitch,” he said. Little did the founding fathers realise, all those years ago, the impact that their visionary dreams, to be part of something big, would be realised in such a spectacular way.

Skerries Gets Ready For Soundwaves Festival
HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS
Jan 20 - Feb 18
Opting out of conflicts won’t be easy. You want to defend others and stand up when circumstances become unfair. However, this is a week when even your most straightforward statements could be misunderstood.
PISCES
Feb 19 - Mar 20
View this week as preparation for the extraordinary opportunities that will come at the month’s close, and you can even feel positive about challenging encounters. Time prepare the mind and body for what is to come.
ARIES
Mar 21 - Apr 20
Since you can’t avoid the minefield of conflicts indicated, you may as well use the opportunity to tackle persistent issues. However, do bear in mind that even ordinary situations could become confused right now.
TAURUS
Apr 21 - May 20
Judge this week by its unfair dilemmas, and you’ll decide it is a total write-off. Indications are that you’re blamed for problems not of your making, and others speak out of turn. Note all for future reference.
Gemini
May 21 - Jun 20
If ever there was a time when addressing issues both swiftly and with uncompromising clarity was vital, it’s during this week. The difficulty, however, is that you’re uncertain about your priorities and past decisions.
Cancer
Jun 21 - Jul 22
Your reaction to the bad behaviour of others depends more on the nature of the damage that they’ve done than how much they’ve upset you. What’s tricky, however, is that you want to be direct but not alienate them.
Leo
Jul 23 - Aug 23
As far as you’re concerned, the faster you settle misunderstandings - the better. However, hastily made arrangements could lead to more misunderstandings - and that is what you don’t want right now.
Virgo
Aug 24 - Sep 22
The more direct you are about both your desires and your concerns, the better. In some cases, you’re concerned that such bluntness would annoy others. However, their reactions make it clear that they take you seriously.
Libra
Sep 23 - Oct 22
The most important thing for you to keep in mind during this week is that most of what’s involved is nothing more than opinion. If you start to justify yourself to other you could lose your perspective. Stick to your views.
Scorpio
Oct 23 - Nov 22
Tackle all unexpected twists that will arise this week one by one, and you soon reduce them to manageable tasks. Better yet, conquering them banishes worries that have been both persistent and worrying.
Sagittarius
Nov 23 - Dec 21
Patience has never been your strength, but developments force you to either slow down or turn things over to others. While initially annoying, you will become wholeheartedly involved - and delight with the results.
Capricorn
Dec 22 - Jan 19
Recent events were both unsettling and exciting, forcing you to neglect matters from finances to issues with loved ones. But these can no longer be ignored, and you’ll find yourself having to deal with the consequences.
Mary Coughlan At The Millbank Mary Coughlan is appearing in the Millbank Theatre, Rush on Saturday, 9th August at 8.30pm. A lot has been written and a lot has been said, whispered, recounted, alleged, supposed and presumed. It’s all quite forgotten now and the songs remain the same, they remain a testament to Mary Coughlan’s seemingly timeless and endless talent. Her smoky, bluesy, boozy drawl has always been a seduction, no matter what the subject.
The vocal marrying of sardonic wit, visceral rage, between the sheets passion, the tenderest of sorrowful regrets- this is Mary’s talent. Regardless of the elements, she chooses to manipulate with flawless ease. Her voice has always been an unforeseen, sudden seduction. This is why she is so loved. This year’s much anticipated Skerries Soundwaves Festival will take place from Thursday, September 18th, to Sunday, September 28th, so make sure you mark your calendars! The committee are hard at work, putting together an exciting programme of events that is sure to thrill adult and child alike. They do expect to have a lot of the Festival Favourites again, such as the big gig in the Courtyard, the Festival
Street Party, a night of classical music, an art exhibition to set the frame for the launch and much more. Events such as ‘Minecraft’ will be on the calendar again, and will be in its third year. Lego workshops will also return, and the local committee are hoping to bring the drumming workshop back from last year, as well as some local music groups who have already indicated they’d love to do another gig. And Skerries Got Talent will
take place again too! The Skerries Facebook page were also excited to be the first to confirm that Jerry Fish will be joined by international festival faves, the Book A Brass Band for a centrepiece concert in
Skerries in the final weekend of September. A full programme of events will be released closer to the launch of the festival, so be sure to keep an eye out for this over the coming months.
Musical Talent Showcased In Rush The 15th annual Scoil Samhradh Chris Langan, held recently in Rush, was yet another showcase of the wonderful musical talent that exists around the North County. The festival, which is held annually in the summer, is the start-off event for a summer of traditional music festivals all over the locality and beyond. The opening night saw a wonderful performance by members of Rinceoil Fingal at the Millbank Theatre in Rush. The Saturday saw a day of music workshops at St Joseph’s secondary school, which saw members of the world famous trad group Kila give expert tuition to participants. Events moved to Rush Sailing Club later that evening for a session mhor to celebrate Rinceoil Fingal’s 20th year teaching and playing traditional music. The weekend concluded with members of Rinceoil playing the music at 11.30am mass in St. Maurs church Rush, in memory of deceased members of Rinceoil Fingal and their families.
Annual ‘Pioneer’ Mass For Balbriggan Group The Balbriggan Pioneer Total A b s t i n e n c e Association’s Annual Mass took place recently at St. Peter and Paul’s Church. The group has a mix of old and new members, with two members receiving Father Cullen Medals, which means each where over 60 years as pioneers, and another member Mary White, is 70 years a pioneer, which is most impressive. Two more of the group where enrolled as new permanent members, and for the first time in decades, two new Junior Pioneers were also enrolled. Both will take a pledge until at least 18 and then decide if they wish to become permanent members. For more information on becoming a pioneer, including any aspiring young pioneers (who are between between 12 and 18 years of age) or for existing members to apply for silver or gold pins, please come to the monthly meetings in the parish
house or contact Chairperson, Eddie Darcy on 0872388254 for more information.

Q:
We asked, “Do you think the cabinet reshuffle might make a difference to our standard of living?’ Amrit Sidhu
Ciaran Coleman, Rush No. It’ll still be the same people basically. I think this is something that’s been wanted for a while, but I don’t think it’ll make any difference. They’re just not putting any young people in, they keep bringing in all the oldies all the time, so nothing changes.
Linda Barry, Swords No because it’ll still be the same government in power. It won’t make a difference at all.
Rhona Clinton, Swords Now, initially when I heard it, I was hoping there may be a change, but really now, I’m thinking there’s not going to be any change.
Jim Curran, Swords I don’t really think it’ll make a change to the standard of living. Because just shifting the cabinet around won’t change things all of a sudden.
Joan Ellis, Dublin I hope so. It needs to be shaken up drastically. We need some new brains and a new attitude.
Paul O’Rourke, Swords No definitely not. It’ll still be the same. Everybody says the same, but it absolutely won’t change.

Farrell Welcomes Increased Investment In Digital Training Local TD Alan Farrell (FG), has welcomed the announcement of an additional €400,000 from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources for training for the digitally excluded. “I am pleased with the announcement of this extra funding. Basic internet skills are of the utmost importance as the majority of employers now look for such skills when building their workforce. Training is delivered as part of the BenefIT scheme through 600 locations nationwide, with
centres in Balbriggan, Portmarnock, Skerries, Swords and The Ward,” he told the County Leader. “The goal of the National Digital Strategy, is to convert 280,000 people from being ‘non-liners’ to ‘onliners’ within a two year period. The Strategy is also committed to getting 2,000 Irish businesses trading online by the end of next year. To do this, the Government has also allocated €5 million to develop a trading-online voucher scheme which will be launched nationally over the

Youth 2000 Summer Festival
I would expect that it wouldn’t. It’s the same people just in different positions.
Many young people from the North County are getting ready to attend the Youth 2000 festival, which takes place from Thursday, 14th to Sunday, 17th August. The festival for young people aged 16 to 35 will be held at Cistercian College, Roscrea, Co Tipperary. The festival, which has been nicknamed the ‘Holy Oxygen’ encourages the youth to experience the Catholic faith and attracted over 1000 people from all over Ireland last year. The festival is donation only and a free bus to travel to the camp will be provided, leaving from Balbriggan. For more information, and to book online, visit ww.youth2000.ie.
Hannah McLoughlin, Santry I hope it makes a difference to the standard of living. It’s not so great now. I was on the street yesterday, and there was a woman whose appendix was bursting, the ambulance didn’t come for one hour, and 20 minutes. I had to get her a taxi to the hospital. It’s an absolute disgrace, the health system needs to be changed, so things like this don’t happen.
Bob Kavanagh, Swords I don’t think do. I think the standard of living would be determined by the same principles, so I don’t think it’ll make a change at all.
Odette Ananje, Swords I’m not sure. I think we just have to be patient and wait and see. Hopefully things will change for the better.
Linda Cleary, Swords No not really. I think they just all have the same views. It’s a different party that we need. The only one i’m interested in at the minute is Sinn Fein. They seem to be the only ones who know what the people really need at the moment.
Ring Commons Sports Centre recently held their annual Field Day. As usual, they organised a family fun packed day, with activities ranging from bouncy castles to dunk tanks, which proved to be a popular attraction, with a queue of locals gathering around. Michelle and The Crew, Bowka Ladies and Bowka Golden Girls all arrived to provide the entertainment, which they delivered, to the delight of all present. Overall it was a successful family fun day, which was enhanced by the glorious sunshine.

I wouldn’t have much faith that it’ll change anything. It’s still the same people working, and they’ll still be creating the same problems.

coming weeks.” “Over €4 billion is spent online by Irish consumers each year, however, only 23 per cent of small businesses in Ireland trade online, this means that almost 70 per cent of the money spent online by consumers in Ireland actually goes overseas. With the North County’s strong hightech industry base, great potential exists in onlinetrading for the large-scale growth of businesses in the local economy. This highlights the Government’s continued commitment to providing small and medium sized business with the resources they need to grow economically and create new jobs,” he concluded.

Local Libraries Take Part In Summer Reading Challenge
@
IN YOUR INBOX
The Summer Reading Buzz programme aims to inspire local children, primarily from the age of 7 to 12 years to have fun with books by reading during the long summer holidays. It’s open to all children who are members of local libraries across the North County Children will register in their local library to take part in the Buzz and they will be given a Summer Reading Buzz membership card. Every time a child returns a book they have read, their Buzz membership card will be stamped with a specially designed Bee stamp. When the card is completed, the child can then hand the card into the library or post it into the special
beehive box, where it will be entered into a draw for some lovely prizes. Yvonne O’Brien Senior Executive Librarian with the local authority told the County Leader: “Research shows that children’s literacy is greatly improved by access to summer reading at public libraries and this initiative is a fun way to engage children in reading while having a fun time.” At the end of the programme, each library will hold a ceremony to award a certificate and a medal to each child who has completed one or more membership cards. On completion of their first membership card each child will receive a Going Places with Books wristband. Throughout the summer, each library will have surprise “bonus points” weeks where two stamps are given instead of one for each book read. There will also be storytelling and arts and crafts sessions on the theme of Bees, Buzzing and Reading to accompany the challenge.

Local Youths Hold Special Prize Giving Ceremony A group of young people from Scoil Muire (based in Howth), recently held their Summer Project’s prize-giving ceremony. Over 160 young people took part in this year’s Summer Project which is a fantastic achievement for the two wonderful ladies that have been keeping this particular show on the road for 33 years now. Lua Clarke and Bríd Dowd started the Summer Project with 80 young people back in 1981 and haven’t missed a year since. “It’s been a great experience,” Bríd told the County Leader.
“We’ve seen many of our first participants grow up and become volunteers themselves.” Lua agrees and says that she gets the greatest thrill out of seeing the children of some of those who attended the first projects coming along now. “It won’t be long before we get some of the grandchildren along at this rate,” she said. As well as presenting cups and medals to the children, the group involved made a very generous contribution to Crosscare’s North County Foodbank appeal. The Summer Projects are now run
As part of the day’s celebrations, the local children of the Summer Projects presented Melissa Monks from Crosscare (standing to the right of the poster) with a generous donation for the organisation’s local Community Foodbank scheme
