Staff At Local Authority Donate Bus Last Friday, staff members of the County Council were delighted have the formal handover of a bus to Abhainn Adult Autism Service, which is part of St Michael’s House organisation. This was the culmination of a relationship dating back to 2014, where staff, as part of Health and Safety Week each year, held sponsored walks for charity.

By Patrick Finnegan The aim of Network Fingal Forum was to encourage staff to take more care of their Health and Fitness and to raise some money for a good cause along the way. In 2014 it was agreed that they would raise funds for a local charity in Swords. The Abhainn Adult Autism Service was chosen by consensus of the forum. The unit was in need of a new bus. Over the three years County Council staff raised a staggering €30,000. Ann Gibson from the County Council said, “This is a fantastic achievement and one that we are very proud of. Thank you to all those involved, including the members of the Forum and its sub-groups, to all the staff in the County Council who took part in the walks

or who sponsored a member of staff, to the sponsors of prizes for the raffle and to the staff of St. Michael’s House, especially the lads in Abhainn for all the support and hard work that went into raising the funds,” she said. Diarmuid O’ Donovan, Manager of Adult Autism Service at St Michael’s House stated that, “the bus has enabled all in Abhainn to access new and more varied locations and has helped us provide a better service”. He went on to say “watch out for the blue bus with the “Donated by the staff of Fingal County Council” sticker on it and know that it is making a difference”. St. Michael’s House CEO, Anna Shakespeare was present on the day to formally accept the generous bus donation. Paul Reid, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council was very proud of the staff who put this all together. He said, “ I have been at a lot of Council events and I’m always very proud of the staff. However, I have to say that this is one of the most inspiring ones I have been at. Seeing the outcome of what staff have done is inspiring for many reasons. Firstly, it seems to connect the indoor and outdoor staff, which is bril-

liant. The second aspect is the fact that it incorporates wellbeing and health, which is very important for us. Thirdly, when you think back to the time you were trying to Gourmet Food Parlour celebrated the 10th anniversary of their successful restaurant in Swords. The process, known as “Network Fingal Forum” stems from Workplace Partnership which was established in 2000 when the first committee was set up to oversee its introduction. The partnership process involves management, unions and staff agreeing on common objectives and working together to ensure organisational success. Partnership continues to be an ongoing process in the County Council and requires the engagement of stakeholders across the organisation.

One Book Project Launched In Balbriggan The One Book Project was launched at a ceremony at Bracken ETNS, Balbriggan last week. This is an initiative which unites local communities in Balbriggan, by schools coming together and studying a particular book, with a shared objective of promoting literacy, whilst developing community links. The One Book project includes four schools in Balbriggan. They are, Balbriggan Educate Together, Bracken Educate Together, St Teresa’s National School and Balbriggan Community School.

Students at primary level either 5th or 6th classes take part, as well as 1st year students at secondary level. The project is driven by the Home School Community Liaison officers of the four schools. This year’s book, ‘Wonder’ by RJ Palacio will be studied in class and is also encouraged at home, so there will be parental involvement. Different events will be held at the four schools, including an Art event, a quiz and a trip to the local cinema to see the movie of the book. Children from the different schools will be mixed in

the group. This is a great opportunity for them to mix and form relationships with pupils from other schools. Darryl Mooney, a teacher from Balbriggan Community College told the County Leader, “This is a combined initiative between four local schools that have come together for this real community effort. The children will read the book, which is called ‘Wonder’ and they will use this book for the next three years. It’s all about inclusion in the community and brings people together and promotes

the number of different nationalities in our town. This is an ideal opportunity to forge new relationships and I warmly welcome this great project,” he said.

Council Wins Top LAMA Award Fingal County Council was named Council of the Year at the Local Authority Members Association’s 2017 Awards on Saturday night in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry. It is the second time in just over two months that the County Council has been recognised with a major national award as last November, they named Local Authority of the Year at the Excellence in Local Government Awards organised by Chambers Ireland. The other Councils short-

listed for LAMA’s Council of the Year Award were Cork City Council, Kildare County Council and Mayo County Council. Two other Council projects were winners on the evening, with InvizBox, one of the successful businesses supported by Fingal’s Local Enterprise Office, winning the Best New/Micro Business Award, while BASE Enterprise Centre in Mulhuddart won the Best Irish Business Working in the Community Award. Nine other local projects

were short-listed at the LAMA Awards, while on Friday evening at the 2017 Irish Tourism Industry Awards, Fingal Tourism Strategy was short-listed for the Best Local Authority Tourism Innovation Award. County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler and the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, attended Saturday evening’s LAMA Awards, along with several councillors and Council staff. Former County Mayor, Cllr Mags Murray, is the

Popular Lusk Man Celebrates 80th Birthday Bobby Byrne is one of the most recognisable faces in Lusk and last week, he celebrated his 80th birthday with a party at Murray’s of Lusk. Bobby is an avid football lover and a lifelong Manchester United fan and he named Bobby Charlton as his all-time football favourite, so much so that he called his dog, ‘Charlton’. Many people will remember Bobby as a founder member of Lusk United FC and he

was also involved with local GAA Club, Round Towers. He also steered Inisfails GAA Club to a championship title some years ago. Due to his straight talking, Bobby, who is a lifelong pioneer, is commonly known as The Blunt. A large circle of friends and family gathered on the night to pay tribute to popular Bobby. These included lots of nephews and nieces, many of whom he babysat for, on the condition that they watched Match of the Day on TV, particularly when Man Utd were playing. He was genuinely overcome by the surprise party which was arranged by his daughter, Roxanne and also included his brother, Paddy. Pictured is popular barman at Empire Bar, Swords, Jim Bourke who pulled his last pint at Empire last week as he has retired due to reaching 65 years of age. Limerick native Jim, who has been at Empire since it first opened, has a wealth of experience and is still keen to continue pulling pints and is hopeful of finding new employment in the not too distant future.

Photographic Exhibition In Malahide The official opening of the fourth successive photographic exhibition of Malahide Camera Club will take place in the Parish Pastoral Centre, Main St, Malahide, on Friday, 10th February at 7pm. The Official Opening will be performed by Michael O’Sullivan, President of the Irish Photographic Federation, to which Malahide Camera Club is affiliated. The exhibition will take place again this year in the local Parish Pastoral Centre, adjacent to the St Sylvester’s Parish Church. This is a superb community facility, which makes an outstanding exhibition centre, in the heart of the Malahide community. A total of 139 images will be exhibited, displaying a variety of genres

of photography that will delight, stimulate and move visitors. Of significant interest this year is that there is a particular emphasis on images of North County Dublin. The exhibition is testimony to the close partnership and cooperation that has always existed between Malahide Camera Club and the local community. Malahide Camera Club, through its annual fund-raising venture, has raised much needed and appreciated funds for the local community down through the years. The local community, in turn, has always been only too willing to support Malahide Camera Club in its many artistic, creative and photographic ventures and achievements. The exhibition will be open to the public from 12 noon on Saturday 11th February until Sunday 26th February 2017.

current chairperson of LAMA. “I would like to offer my congratulations, on behalf of all our councillors, to the staff of Fingal County Council on winning the Council of the Year Award,” said Cllr Butler. “Coming so soon after the Chambers Ireland Local Authority of the Year Award, the LAMA Award is further acknowledgement of the excellent work being done by management and

staff across all areas of the Council. This is an award that everybody should be very proud of.” Chief Executive, Paul Reid added: “Our staff, with the support of our councillors, work on a daily basis for the citizens of our county and to make Fingal a better place to live, to work, to learn, to visit and to do business in. It is an award that everybody within the organisation has contributed to and we are delighted that our work has been recognised in this way,” he said.

Swords Castle Digging History Seminar The public are invited to find out what was uncovered at Swords Castle last summer, as a result of the successful Season 2 of Digging History. A morning seminar on the findings will be held in the Atrium, County Hall, Swords on Saturday 18th February from 10am-1pm. A County Council spokesperson said, “Over one hundred members of the community, local and visitors alike, took part in the dig last August and now we have the first results of their hard work. The seminar will be opened by County Mayor, Cllr. Darragh Butler, a frequent visitor to the excavation. Specialists have examined the material we found and we can start to add more to the story of Swords Castle.” “Dr Meriel McClathcie will tell us about what people were eating and growing there; Professor Roger Stalley will look at the architecture of the castle and the history of its development through time and Siobhan Duffy will tell us the stories behind the small finds. The director of the Swords Castle: Digging History project, Christine Baker will paint a picture of what has been discovered at Swords Castle so far from previously unknown ditches, decorated tiles, to burning buildings, wine and a fragment of human skull,” the spokesperson confirmed. “The past two summers of digging have not only widened our understanding of the story of Swords Castle and how people used it in the past, but have created a

Intriguing French Election Race The French Presidential election, run over two rounds is due this April. All declared candidates will be on the first round ballot paper, but only the two with the highest votes will feature in the final ballot, held a fortnight later. The Socialists have selected Benoît Hamon a former cabinet member. He won the second round Socialist primary with 58 per cent of the votes cast. He has an uphill struggle to make any impression. Recognising this, he has called on Jadot the Green Party candidate along with the far left, Mélenchon who is the Communist contender to throw their lot in with him. President Hollande has undermined the left vote to such an extent that there is little prospect of a Socialist candidate making it to the second round unless all strands of the left conspire to deprive others of election. The two perceived final round candidates have till now been the National front leader, Marine Le Pen

and centre-right nominee, François Fillon who served five years under President Sarkozy as Prime Minister. Fillon comprehensively beat Sarkozy in the primaries to earn his place as his party’s candidate. A big question has arisen as to Fillon’s suitability as a candidate due to questions of payments made to members of his family from state funds. Should he be forced to withdraw, Sarkozy may well be the replacement candidate. The opinion polls prior to this controversy showed 39 year old Emmanuel Macron closing the gap. Macron, the former Rothschild Investment banker was, like Hamon, is a member of Hollande’s government. He stepped down some months ago to launch this bid to replace his old boss. He has built a national party organisation which will field candidates in every constituency. He has attracted backing from across most sections of France. If Fillon

succeeds in staying in the race to the first round, it seems that Macron will be the one to face Le Pen in the crucial final round. If that is the case there appears little point in Le Pen contesting the day. Le Pen, who launched her campaign last weekend, electoral base is far right By Cathal Boland and Macron will garner the left vote while sucking away the middle centre right ground leaving Le Pen no place from which to find fresh additional votes. I find it difficult to see her achieve more than 30 per cent on the day against Macron. Indeed, while neither Fillon nor Sarkozy are as attractive a candidate as Macron, they too are better placed than Le Pen to win in a final round. Should either make it to the final round, Le Pen will have a better percentage vote due to a poor voter turnout from the left. Macron at this stage is best place to win.

‘Metro Can Deliver 50,000 Jobs’ Local Fine Gael senator and the party’s deputy leader, Dr James Reilly has welcomed confirmation from Minister Pascal Donohue that the Government will positively consider bringing forward the delivery of Metro North to Swords and the North County. Senator Reilly said, “The is a key piece of infrastructure for this area. A study by reputable economic consultants in 2008 forecast that Metro North could deliver 37,000 to North County Dublin. It’s my opinion now in 2017 that Metro North would deliver more than 37,000 jobs, possibly north of 50,000 jobs if the key strategic land bank at Dublin Airport was developed with connectivity to Dublin City and connectivity north to Swords,” he said. “I will continue to lobby the cabinet and my former ministerial colleagues to grasp the opportunity to invest in infrastructure in Fingal, the fastest growing area in Europe and deliver jobs and other key projects to the region, including Senator Reilly housing, schools and community facilities.” He continued, “Now is the time to be bold and invest in this area, which has the capital airport of Ireland and is very attractive to Foreign Direct Investors as a base for Europe and Brexit companies from the UK seeking a new base to continue their business operations in Europe. Brexit offers a key opportunity for Ireland to make a case for derogation and mitigation measures in the transition period, to help Ireland alleviate the economic negative consequences of Brexit including job losses.” “What that means in plain English is that Ireland, as part of its negotiating strategy, must seek exemptions, derogations from the current straight jacket fiscal controls imposed by the EU and agree extra capital

investment in commercial projects like Metro North, motorways, and social investment in hospitals, schools, housing to drive new economic activity into Ireland and this region,” he said. Reilly continued, “There are precedents for measures like this, for example when East Germany was morphed into West Germany, special transition measures, mitigation measures, exemptions and investment were put in place over a period of time to assist East Germany to adapt to the new economic reality.” “Ireland is a special case, a carbon copy and we need more investment now in infrastructure to attract new companies into Fingal and North County Dublin to compensate for the Economic hit we are going to take in other parts of Ireland. At a recent briefing by IBEC (Irish Business Employers Confederation), the directors were making the same case and I support their aim for increased Capital Investment in Ireland. The EU must take the handcuffs off Ireland and assist economic growth and investment now. The EIB European Investment Bank are ready and willing to invest in Ireland’s infrastructure if the restrictions are relaxed or lifted. Fingal and the North County has a great future if the right investment is made now. ”Build Metro now and the jobs will come,” concluded Reilly.”

“Build Metro now and the jobs will come.”

Urban Decay brand ambassador Ruby Rose stepped out at the People’s Choice Awards recently rocking a bold, dark burgundy lip. The look was created using Urban Decay Cosmetics Vice Liquid Lipstick in shade Blackmail, by Make-Up Artist Jo Baker.. The hotly anticipated lipstick launch, is due to hit

counters in Ireland on Tuesday,February 14th. Waiting lists are already in place at Urban Decay counters nationwide. HOW TO: The key to creating a dark and bold liquid lip look is prepping the lips before lipstick application. To start, use a sugar scrub on the lips to remove any dryness or flaky skin. Next, apply a moisturising lip balm and leave it on while you apply the rest of your make-up. Finally, use a tissue to remove any excess lip balm and then apply your Vice Liquid Lipstick (RRP €18.50), starting with the lip line and finishing by filling in the rest of the lip.

Enterprising Women’s Network Workshop Over 50 female businesswomen congregated at the Fingal Enterprising Women Network workshop recently to learn how they can work more effectively on growing their business, as opposed to getting caught up on a treadmill of firefighting in their business. Joanne Hession of the Entrepreneur’s Academy said, “It’s so important to focus on building a business that will work for you. Business owners spend so much time working in their business and often stop to question whether their business is actually working for them. It is important to enjoy the work you are doing, to be financially

secure and to be able to enjoy pursuits outside of work. Is your business allowing you to do that and, if not, what you need to do make that happen” she said. The workshop focused on practical steps that entrepreneurs could implement straight away to improve their own performance and that of their business. The session was intensive, but it was filled with lots of valuable advice from the entrepreneurs about what is working for them. As always, it was also a great networking opportunity. Speaking about future events planned over the coming year, Head of Enterprise in Fingal, Oisín Geoghegan explained: “This is just one of our four annual events hosted by the Fingal Enterprising Women Network. The network is an initiative of the Local Enterprise Office Fingal. It provides networking and education events for women in business and enterprise in Fingal. Membership of the network is free of charge.”

O’Brien Voices Concerns Over Pyrite Remedial Scheme Local Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has again voiced his concerns regarding the Government’s Pyrite Remediation Scheme. He claims that the current scheme is in need of rehaul to support all homes with pyrite damage in the North County and he has raised the shortcomings of the government’s Pyrite Remediation Scheme directly with the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny in the Dáil last week. A remedial scheme, launched in 2013, is subject to the property reaching a level of damage specified under a scale drawn up by the Pyrite Resolution Board, that critics claim the vast majority of those affected will not qualify for. The Minister previously confirmed to O’Brien that 913 dwellings have been approved for inclusion in the Pyrite Remedial Scheme, but O’Brien commented, “I have continually raised concerns that this scheme is far too limited and unfit for purpose. It only addresses the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the extent of the pyrite problems in thousands of homes across the east coast.” “We flagged this issue when the scheme was first proposed and submitted a series of amendments

to the legislation, all of which were rejected by the last Government. We also published a Pyrite Remediation Bill to expand the scheme in 2012 this was also ignored by Government. It’s time to do more to support the thousands of families across the North County who have been left in limbo,” said O’Brien. “It needs the Taoiseach’s direct intervention to ensure that the Pyrite Remediation Scheme is brought up to standard so that thousands of home owners see light at the end of the tunnel and see their houses fixed and brought up to specification. “There are an estimated 72,000 homeowners that are excessively damaged with pyrite, yet fewer than 1000 homes have been accepted into the Government’s scheme,” he said. “The numbers of applications which the Minister has previously provided just scratches the surface and are further proof that the Pyrite Remediation Scheme is grossly inadequate. “The problem lies with the reference to ‘significant levels’ of pyrite damage in the criteria set out by government under the scheme. Those who don’t meet the criteria must also be catered for. Leaving aside the damage, a house with pyrite is valueless, until it is remediated.” “There needs to be a comprehensive review of the pyrite scheme to protect all affected homeowners in North County Dublin and not just some. My party and I have committed to expanding the Pyrite Remediation Scheme so that all homeowners affected by pyrite can have their homes fixed should their insurers not pay,” he concluded.

Sgt Vincent Connolly provided excellent tips on how to beat the burglars. He spoke about the importance of keeping doors and windows secure and to guard against key fishing, which is a popular method of breaking in and stealing cars, used by burglars. He also answered some questions from concerned residents and assured them that the Gardai will use all resources available to combat the recent spike in burglaries in the area.

REA Cumisky Target US Market Almost 20 per cent of overseas enquiries about Irish property are now coming from the United States, from a negligible base two years ago, according to a Real Estate Alliance nationwide survey. “Property buyers from the US are increasingly securing homes and investments in Ireland, buoyed by a strong dollar and the lure of a resurgent economy for emigrants,” said John Cumisky of REA Cumisky with offices in Balbriggan and Swords. By way of example he instances “a fabulous Country House at Clonswords, Ballyboughal on 20 acres” (pictured above) where a viewing party from Illinois are making travel arrangements to inspect the property. “Real Estate Alliance are offering Irish property vendors the chance to take advantage of this mini-boom by registering for their upcoming Irish Property Exhibition in Boston, Cumisky has confirmed that he is targeting this event within both offices.” “The biggest rises were seen in calls from Irish emigrants planning to return from Australia, which increased from 11 per cent in 2015 to 18 per cent in 2016.” “The environmental damage they wreak is immense. They are capable of processing as much as 250 tonnes of fish per day, killing countless dolphins, whales, sharks and other marine life that get caught in their massive nets.”

“There should also be a redress scheme for Irish fishermen whose gear and equipment has been destroyed or damaged. If the Irish Government is not willing to face these trawlers down the least they can do is support the coastal communities they are damaging,” she said.

Low Cost Loan Scheme For Local Farmers Local Fine Gael senator, Dr James Reilly has said that a newly launched low cost loan scheme will be extremely beneficial for potentially 800 farmers in the North County, particularly to help them mitigate against the impact of Brexit. The ‘Agri Cashflow Support Loan Scheme’, which was developed in co-operation with the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI), was launched by Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed last week. Reilly said, “This is going to be really beneficial to farmers here in Sarah Brown was the winner of the January Giveaway at Millfield Shopping Centre, Balbriggan, as part of Millfield Moments. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. L.K
