Great Honour For Ballyboughal Ballyboughal has been nominated by the County Council into the national Pride of Place awards 2015, as Fingal’s sole entrant in the 300 to 1000 village population category. The Pride of Place competition is a Co-operation Ireland initiative to acknowledge the fantastic work being done by communities all over the island of Ireland, and their efforts to create vibrant, viable and visible communities. It also affords local authorities an opportunity to participate at the heart of local communities and help build community spirit. To this end, a working document on improving and repairing amenities in the village has been prepared by Ballyboughal Community Council, in conjunction with other voluntary groups in the village, and has been submitted to the County Council for consideration and, where possible, completion. The Pride of Place judges are coming to Ballyboughal on Tuesday, 28th July, where Ballyboughal Community Council and the Pride of Place steering committee, will make a presentation on the history of the area and all of the voluntary and community work being carried out in the village and environs. The judges will make some historical and location site visits, and afterwards meet socially with various members of the voluntary community. These include

the GAA, Athletics Club, Tidy Towns, Youth Club, Scouts, Pitch and Putt, St Patrick’s Hall, Ballyboughal.net, The Hedgerow Society, Senior Citizens, the Community Council and several other voluntary groups. By coincidence, Ballyboughal Community Council is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and will run a special Pride of Place photographic and video exhibition, which is dedicated to all of the volunteers, from all voluntary groups in the village, and their enormous contribution to the community of Ballyboughal over the years. This exhibition will also form part of the presentation to the Pride of Place judges. The Pride of Place exhibition in St Patrick’s Hall will have the theme “The Spirit of Ballyboughal”. It will be opened officially at a reception for all the village at 8pm by the new County Mayor and Ballyboughal man, Cllr David O’Connor. The entire village and all volunteers from any Ballyboughal voluntary group, past and present, are invited to attend this reception. Afterwards a major evening of music celebration is planned in the Village Inn to celebrate the wonderful history of music that lives on to this day and is such an intrinsic part of the culture and Spirit of Ballyboughal.

Massive Tourism Boost Pipe Band Championship Comes To North County

The County Leader can reveal that a major musical event is to be held in the North County next year. In an exclusive interview, Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF), has confirmed that the North County is about to get a significant boost to the local economy, when it hosts the AllIreland Pipe Band Championships next year. An announcement is due to be made that the world renowned Irish championships will be held in Malahide Castle in July 2016, with 80 bands from across Ireland, Scotland, Canada, the US and Australia due to travel to the event. An audience of 5,000 people is expected to attend, spending at least half a million euro in the local economy. It is very fitting that North County Dublin has been chosen to host this prestigious championship, given that the North County has a long tradition of pipe bands, producing some of the finest pipe bands in the country, including the Black Raven in Lusk, St Maur’s in Rush and St Laurence O’Toole in Howth. O’Brien explained, “This is a huge announcement for Malahide and the entire north county Dublin region. It’s the first time in 25 years that Dublin has hosted this event, and the first time ever that it will be hosted in the North County. “The announcement follows several meetings I had with the Irish Pipe Band Association, which involved showcasing Fingal as the perfect venue for the event. I also met with the County Council and I am delighted that they agreed to fully support the endeavour. This event gives us an opportunity to capitalise on that tradition. The

this event in Fingal. We are fully supportive of this magnificent occasion which will form a key part of our 2016 Events Calendar.“ Chairman of the Irish Pipe Band Association Gavin Richardson said, “The All-Ireland Pipe Band Championships is the premier event for Piping, Drumming and Drum Majors in Ireland, showcasing individuals and bands from every county, all competing for the title of All-Ireland Champion. Hosting this prestigious event in Malahide would not be possible without the support of Senator Darragh O’Brien, County Mayor, David O’Connor, Chief Executive Officer Paul Reid and Ethna Felten, Ann Marie Farrelly and Paul Barnes from the County Council. I would take this opportunity to thank them most sincerely for their support,” he concluded. New Rival For Ryanair? Lufthansa has declared that it wants to use its expanded low-cost brand, Eurowings as a platform for European consolidation. It’s thought it could potentially take in other Lufthansa units or part-owned stakes such as Brussels Airlines and Air

Dolomiti. The first plane with the new Eurowings branding, aimed at price-sensitive leisure tourists, will take off from Cologne to the Dominican Republic in November. It will

replace the Germanwings brand. Lufthansa chief executive, Carsten Spohr said Europe’s airlines needed to consolidate. “Lufthansa wants to be a part of that process and it sees Eurowings as the ideal platform,” he said. Eurowings is Lufthansa’s answer to Ryanair. It will have an Austrian operating licence and is not bound by the group’s collective labour agreements.

Hertz and Ryanair, who both have their headquarters in Swords fell out because Ryanair tickets, which used to be available only from the airline, but can now be booked through travel agents using third party systems. Hertz is believed to have interpreted this as a breach of contract, and their lawyers are said to be confident that they have a sound legal footing in this regard and they intend to pursue this through the courts. Ryanair disputes that there has been a breach of contract, and is understood to have instructed its lawyers to issue proceedings against Hertz, alleging the move by Hertz was a breach of contract. Customers who have already booked cars will not be affected.

EU citizens have been faced with excessive mobile phone charges for too long. This announcement is long overdue,” he added. “This decision is now required to be voted on in the European Parliament. Parliament has led the way on this issue. The ultimate abolition of roaming charges represents a good day’s work for the European Parliament.”

Warning For Rush Bathers Residents in Rush have been told it will be at least three years before Irish Water can stop raw sewage being pumped in to the sea. The County Council has issued warnings to swimmers in Rush, after dangerously high levels of bacteria and E.coli were recorded. This will come as a great disappointment to locals, especially as we have been enjoying a spell of sunny warm weather of late. This latest setback to bathers in Rush has prompted a response from local man and Minister for Children, Dr James Reilly who said, “works to connect Rush to a treatment plant need to get going.” A notice states E.coli levels on the South Beach spiked from 10 per 100ml in May to 624 per 100ml in Dr. Reilly TD June. Untreated sewage from approximately 2,700 homes flows into the sea nearby. Lifeguards on the beach stopped several people entering the water last week, with the council confirming its advisory notice will remain in place for the entire bathing season. “Pregnant women or anyone with an open wound have also been warned against swimming,” the Council added. “Do not swim” notices were placed at the popular Rush Harbour beach, which leads to the scenic North Beach. Officials maintain neither are desig-

nated bathing areas and that the North Beach is not routinely monitored. Irish Water Safety has been forced to move its course for children from the harbour beach to nearby Loughshinny. The local authority said Irish Water will carry out works in the area to connect the remaining portion of Rush with a waste water treatment plant by “late 2018.” However it’s not all bad news for bathers in the North County, as six of the nine EU identified bathing waters in the area achieved compliance with the new stricter standards of ‘Excellent ‘ or ‘Good’ bathing water quality according to the most recent Environmental Protection Agency report - The Quality of Bathing Water in Ireland - 2014. Those waters which achieved the ‘Excellent’ standard rating in the North County include, Balcarrick Beach, Donabate, Velvet Strand Beach. Portmarnock and the Brook Beach, Portrane.

Henchy Wants Donabate Shopfronts Restored Local councillor, Adrian Henchy (FF), wants to see shopfronts in Donabate village restored. At a recent Council meeting, he asked the Chief Executive to examine the deterioration in the standards of shopfronts within Donabate village and

also, what way the deterioration of shops could be stopped. He also asked how to improve the integrity and economic vitality of Donabate village compared to other North County villages and towns, such as Malahide and Skerries. The Council responded

Newman Appeals For New Playground In Swords

Cllr Joe Newman is pictured at Rathingle Playground, Swords with concerned residents, Anna Jakubik and her children, Max and Vicky and Moira Goslin, with her granddaughter, Katie Goslin

Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) has been approached by a number of concerned residents of Rathingle in Swords regarding safety issues at the area’s playground. Newman told the County Leader, “Some local residents have complained to me regarding the bad state of the playground at Rathingle and the vandalism and anti-social behaviour that goes on there. This playground is not up to specification and we are awaiting a new playground to be installed here.” “I made a submission to the Council on their behalf asking them to speed up the installation of the new playground, as this issue was highlighted well over a year ago. I also asked if someone would call to inspect the playground and resolve these issues.” One of the residents, Anna Jakubik, whose children are regular users of the playground said, “At night time the real problem occurs, as there are no lights around the place and teenagers can do as they wish under the cover of darkness. The local children have nowhere else to play. Moira Goslin, who lives in nearby Cherry Park brings her grandchildren to play here. She said, “When I bring the kids here, there are usually teenagers here. I don’t mind them hanging

around, but sometimes they use the equipment and the children are intimidated by them. I know they need somewhere to play and have fun, but this is not a suitable area for this,” she said. Newman received a response from Paul Smyth, Senior Executive Officer, Balbriggan/Swords Operational Area of the Council, who stated, “We are aware of the situation at Rathingle Playground where, due to constant and ongoing vandalism, only three pieces of play equipment remain in a usable state. The safety surface at the playground is constantly being damaged, and while we have carried out repairs each time, this has now become a serious draw on limited resources.” He continued, “We are reaching a point where we will have little option but to close the playground, purely on safety grounds, which is something I want to avoid if possible. It is essential that the issue of the ongoing vandalism is tackled before the large scale works are carried out. The people who are most affected by this vandalism are the parents of small children who use the playground. I do not anticipate that this matter will be concluded before October at the earliest,” he concluded.

by saying that the maintenance of existing shopfronts within the urban areas of the North County are primarily a matter for the owners of retail premises. They felt the current state of the Donabate shopfronts were not a significant cause for concern, but that a regular painting of the shopfronts should address the

issue. “In towns with a proactive Chamber of Commerce, a collective focus on maintaining shopfronts to a high standard is generally an important priority. In towns where this is not the case, it is left to the owners themselves to ensure a satisfactory standard of finish. Currently, within Donabate village, the standard of shop front

maintenance is such that it would not be a significant cause for concern. A regular (annual / bi-annual) painting of shop fronts with external finish replacement as necessary would address any deterioration,” the Council said. “Ultimately, the replacement of a shop front is a commercial decision. The Council

can intervene in situations where it is clear that there is noncompliance with planning permission relating to a shopfront. The Council can address the issue with the provision of aids, for example shopfront improvement design briefs and suggestions subject to staff resources,” they added.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Mayor O’Connor said, “It is my pleasure to give the Castle back to the public by opening the gates and inviting in all who are fascinated by our past, and all who wish to visit this monument that we have carefully preserved and restored for their enjoyment”. Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said, “The opening of Swords Castle is huge for Swords not only in terms of a local amenity for the people of the town, but also the opportunity to develop the tourism potential that the site offers This is the start of a very ambitious plan for Swords, which will include a Cultural quarter and the enhancement of the Main Street. The opening of the Castle is a very important part of the

overall plan for Swords,” he said. A summer of busy activity is planned for Swords Castle when the 12th Century Castle will once again become the centre of Swords. The Swords Festival takes place there from 17th to 19th July and among its attractions will be the Swords Archaeofest on Saturday 18th July. Younger visitors will get the chance to be archaeologists for the day, make their own shields, watch how medieval pottery and bronze antiquities were made and get to handle artefacts with the staff of the National Museum. In August, as part of Heritage Week, an exhibition entitled Swords Castle-My Castle will run from 22nd August. This exhibition will feature a photographic record of Swords Castle through the years showing how the Castle and the people and town of Swords are interlinked. In addition, Swords Castle Digging History, a public archaeological dig will take place from 22nd August to 11th September. The Castle is now open daily from 10.00am to 6.00pm

Just before their summer break, pupils from Malahide had a project of their own unveiled in Malahide: ‘Idea to Implementation.’ ‘Idea to Implementation,’ is a project using design thinking to encourage young people as part of their school work, to look at their environment from a business perspective and to discover how they can make a difference. Celine O’Rourke, of the County Council and John Conroy, the designers of this process worked with St Oliver Plunkett’s National School, Malahide since last September on the project. “Children have the ability to dream. Their minds are untarnished by failures and constraints that we develop as we get older. The design of this process started two years ago with the development of an eight stage process,” said Celine. Following a very exciting exhibition of their projects by the children in Malahide Library “Supreme Stumps” by students Gary, Patrick and Liam was selected by the adjudicators as a project that could be developed and implemented by the students with assistance from mentors. “Supreme Stumps” is described by the entrepreneurs as “A decoration to make people happy and allow them to learn at the same time. They will be learning history because we will be carving tree stumps to look like historical characters and events from the local area.” The result of this process, carved to the children’s design by artist Mervin Ennis, is located beside the coach car park in Malahide Castle, was unveiled on Friday 26th June. The project was supported by Fingal County Council, Malahide Chamber of Commerce, The Grand Hotel, Malahide, Design 21C and A.I.B. Swords / Malahide.

Swords Beauty Salon On RNLI Urges Locals To Crest Of A Wave Be Careful In Water A local RNLI group has urged locals to take precautionary measures, and wear appropriate clothing before entering the water. This was following an incident in which the Howth RNLI rescued a man after he fell in the water without a wetsuit or buoyancy aid. The inshore lifeboat launched to reports of four men in two kayaks in difficulties one mile north of Howth harbour with one of the men in need of medical assistance. The casualty had been kayaking with his three friends when one of the kayaks overturned throwing the occupants into the water. The man was not wearing a wet suit or a buoyancy aid and was suffering from the onset of hypothermia. The lifeboat located the

casualties within four minutes of launching and took all 4 men aboard the lifeboat with the kayaks in tow and treated the casualty for hypothermia at the scene. Volunteer lifeboat helm, Ian Martin said, “The casualty was in this instance extremely lucky, as without a proper wet suit his core body temperature was dropping very fast and this could have been very serious. We urge all kayakers to have the proper clothing, wetsuits and lifejackets before heading out to sea.” Skerries RNLI also answered a rescue call out recently, brought four people to safety on Sunday last after their racing yacht began taking on water after striking rocks near one of the islands off Skerries. Skerries RNLI volunteers launched their Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat ‘Louis Simson’, shortly after 4pm, when reports were received by Dublin Coast Guard that a yacht had struck rocks near Colt island off Skerries. The lifeboat with volunteer Philip Ferguson at the helm and crewed by volunteers Eoin Grimes, Simon Shiels and Emma Wilson, made its way directly to the area reported. After a quick search of the area the vessel was located. Having freed themselves from the rocks, they were making their way towards Skerries harbour. Water was leaking into the yacht through damage to the hull. The lifeboat was positioned alongside and a crew member boarded, bringing the salvage pump carried aboard the lifeboat. Speaking after the call out, Gerry Canning, Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer for Skerries RNLI said: “The RNLI spends a lot of time and effort making sure that our volunteers have exactly the equipment they need to cater for any kind of emergency. In emergencies such as this, the salvage pump can be invaluable.”

The County Council recently launched the County Council’s Age Friendly Facilities programme. The launch took place at the annual Memory Makers Event, where the area’s older citizens were invited to showcase their arts, crafts and short stories at a vibrant exhibition of their talents. Fingal’s Age Friendly Facilities programme will help our older citizens to identify our community facilities as ‘Age Friendly’ buildings. A member of staff in each facility will act as a champion for age friendliness and older customers. The North County is one of the first Age Friendly counties in Ireland and in implementing this initiative, the local authority will be asking our older citizens what they like in their community facilities and what may be improved. They will be developing actions to meet the needs of older customers in twenty six community facilities across the locality.

greater Dublin region. The project involves a new wastewater treatment plant located at Clonshaugh; an underground orbital sewer and two pumping stations; and an outfall pipeline discharging treated wastewater 1km north-east of Ireland’s Eye. A marine ground investigation is being undertaken in order to inform the preparation of the construction method for the marine outfall pipeline. This survey, which will assess the

composition of the sea bed, involves using a jack-up platform in order to make a number of boreholes along the proposed marine outfall pipeline route. The platform will be visible from the North County coastline over a four week period from mid-July into August. A notice to mariners will be issued to ensure that other water users are aware of the survey. One borehole is required to be undertaken on Velvet Strand, Portmarnock. This

part of the survey is scheduled to take place in September (weather permitting) in order to minimise any potential impact for beach users. The survey is envisaged to take 2-3 days and Velvet Strand will continue to remain open during the survey. The GDD project team is inviting members of the public to visit any of the following information events as follows: the first event is on Wednesday, 15th July in Howth Yacht Club from 10am – 2pm, and then in Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links from 4pm – 8pm on the same day.

European Commission Formally Withdraws Maternity Leave Bill By Cathal Boland The European Commission formally withdrew its proposal to overhaul of the EU’s maternity leave rules, after it proved impossible to reach a compromise between member states and the European Parliament. Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan said: “The draft maternity legislation was adopted by the parliament in 2010 with the aim of strengthening women’s rights by ensuring that 20 weeks of fully paid maternity leave becomes standard practice across the European Union.” She went on to say: “The Commission has yet again chosen to capitulate to the business lobby over strengthening equality.” The Committee of the Regions is comprised of representative drawn from across the Local Authorities of the EU. It is a part of the decision making process and the Commission is obliged to consult with it. This provides an opportunity for local politicians to tell the Commission of the views of their localities. Neale Redmond EPP is a Member of the COR from Dublin and he spoke of how Ireland will work to ensure that when the In Out referendum is held in the UK that the decision will be to stay. This he says is in recognition of the devastating impact that a Grexit would have on this country. Neale said in an interview in Brussels: “The UK and Ireland have had a shared history going back centuries. They are absolutely our best trading partners.”

Siobhan Kinsella PRESIDENT FINGAL DUBLIN CHAMBER It is a particularly special honour to be President of the Fingal Dublin Chamber in our 21st year! Fingal is, in my opinion, the most dynamic and attractive place in Ireland to live and work. Over the course of the last year we have seen real and tangible improvements in employment opportunities in the region, with high quality job announcements in organisations, such as Alexion Pharmaceuticals, BMS and Mallinckrodt. Fingal is, and will continue to benefit from the increased passenger numbers using Dublin Airport, with 25 million passengers expected over the coming year. Each passenger increases our tourism opportunities and the commercial benefits to the region through supply chain opportunities for local businesses and increased purchasing power through salaries being paid to those living and buying in the region. Fingal Dublin Chamber was also privileged to have hosted the international ITLG tech conference in partnership with Fingal County Council, DCU and ITB. This international event showcased the economic, social and heritage attributes of Fingal to an

international decision making community in a way that no marketing campaign could have achieved. We, in Fingal are rightly looking forward to a period of increased economic activity that will benefit the families of the region. Fingal Dublin Chamber is in business for business and we are grateful to have a committed and energetic council supporting the ever increasing activities of this dynamic chamber. The chamber has always been to the fore in promoting the economic development of the region; we can only do this through the engagement of our exceptional members. In my experience, the participation of the members of Fingal Dublin Chamber is not matched anywhere in the country. Our ability to facilitate opportunities for business engagement and business development can only be achieved through the positive attitude of our members and for that we are extremely grateful. This is a chamber of members, for the members and that is why the chamber continues to be able to thrive. We are also proud of our positive relationships with local and national government, particularly so with Fingal County Council, with whom the chamber has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for those who live, work and stay in Fingal. We will continue to build on these relationships into the future.

21 Years Serving The Business Community Fingal Dublin Chamber is celebrating 21 years of looking after the business community of the local area and this year they achieved even more than usual. This year the chamber, in partnership with Fingal County Council, DCU and ITB Blanchardstown hosted the ITLG Silicon Valley Global Tech Summit, which involved bringing executives from key companies in Silicon Valley to Fingal. There were a number of events, including companies pitching for investment, and a VIP reception in Malahide Castle with the US Ambassador, Kevin O'Malley as special guest. The day long summit itself was attended by 400 delegates and highlighted the region's attractions as a place to invest, to work and to live. This was followed by a gala awards dinner . Continued on page 12

Congratulations Fingal Dublin Chamber Fingal County Council is proud to have had a great working relationship with Fingal Dublin Chamber over the past 21 years. We would like to wish the Chamber all the best for the future and look forward to continuing, and building on that strong relationship going forward.

The summit highlighted the high quality environment that Fingal has to offer for foreign direct investment companies. The chamber will continue to drive this agenda into the future for the benefit of the region and to create more jobs for the younger generation. The chamber constantly stresses the economic value of having Dublin Airport in the area. Dublin Airport is continuing to grow with over 24 million passengers due to pass through the airport this year. CEO FINGAL DUBLIN CHAMBER grow economic development of the area even further in the coming years. We will continue to represent the hundreds of businesses who have joined the chamber, as well as welcoming new members, almost on a weekly basis. The chamber has drawn up a new strategic plan for the coming three years. “We are committed to the enhancement of economic prosperity and quality of life in Fingal and we want to ensure that our members have a competi-

Our objectives are to support and influence economic activity, to drive development, change and innovation at local and national level to provide tailored business services to our members and to continuously grow and expand the diversity of our membership.” “We will provide a greater range of networking opportunities for our small, medium and corporate members. In the past year we have greatly improved what the chamber has to offer. This will

continue into the future and we would like more companies to join us to be part of our great story.” “We were delighted to have celebrated this great event at our annual mid-summer barbecue and garden party at the Wright Venue, Swords, which was held last week. This has been running for the past few years and it provides an opportunity for people to meet and socialise, with business in mind.”

CHIEF EXECUTIVE FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL

Fingal County Council offers the chamber and all its members our sincere congratulations and good wishes for continued good work on behalf of Fingal's business community. Over the past 21 years, this Council has supported the chamber in its wide range of activities to network, connect and engage the diverse and active business community across Fingal. We've seen both the county and the chamber grow from strength to strength during that time, and some of the world's leading companies included in the 5,500 businesses that have chosen to base themselves in Fingal. Many of these companies are important members of the Fingal Dublin Chamber. Along with the Fingal Dublin Chamber, Fingal County Council is looking forward with strong ambition for Fingal to be a leading business destination. In May 2015 Fingal hosted to the ITLG Silicon Valley Global Technology Summit. The event saw elite business and technology leaders from Silicon Valley visit Fingal for an intensive two day event. We seized the opportunity to promote Fingal to this highly influential audience. We used every moment of the trip to showcase Fingal as a place in which to invest, work and live. Fingal County Council will also launch the Dublin Enterprise Zone later this summer. The Dublin Enterprise Zone consists of over 700 hectares of undeveloped, zoned and serviced land. It also boasts 20 business parks, 800 companies, nearly 17,000 employees and 1.18 million m2 of building floor area. Once launched, the Dublin Enterprise Zone will be a huge asset to Fingal in attracting both Irish and international investment. Swords is preparing to apply for Purple Flag status for town centres that meet or surpasses the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy. I look forward with anticipation to more great opportunities like these to promote Fingal to the business community at home and abroad, and to continue to develop our strong relationship with the Fingal Dublin Chamber as it grows into the future.

Congratulations to Fingal Dublin Chamber on your 21 years

Fingal Dublin Chamber delivers value to it's members, through a variety of opportunities to network, connect and engage with each other. As the region's largest business organisation, they also provide advice, support, referrals and representation to help businesses grow and develop. They host a variety of networking events, business breakfasts and lunches, where business leaders are invited to gather together and share common strands, where business opportunities are spawned and new friendships are forged. Last Tuesday, the chamber held its annual mid-summer Garden Party and BBQ at the Wright Venue, Swords in glorious summer

sunshine, where members interacted in a relaxing social environment. This is always a wellsupported event and last week was no exception. The event was attended by the newly elected County Mayor, Cllr David O'Connor, who spoke eloquently about the important role the chamber plays in the economic growth of the region and the necessity to grow jobs. Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly was also in attendance to show his support for the chamber and the vital role they play in the business community of the area. The chamber, which is now 21 years in existence, started life as Swords and District Chamber, at a time when the business scene was

far removed from where it is now. CEO, Tony Lambert was its first president and he spoke about how this organisation developed from humble beginnings, to becoming the commercial powerhouse that it is today. "In 1994, it became

obvious that business people in Swords needed a strong organisation to promote the area - not alone Swords town, but the whole region. The result was that 35 business people came together in March 1994 to form the Swords and District Chamber of

The awards night is always well attended and eagerly anticipated by all. A highlight of the Awards night is the presentation of the JC Savage Business Person of the Year

To honour his memory, the chamber created this award, which is presented to a business person who had been a 'champion of success' in their own business, creating high standards of business excellence and achievement, while

making a significant contribution to the Fingal region. The first winner of the award was Swords based entrepreneur, Michael Dawson, CEO of One4All Gift Vouchers. These excellent centres are part of the reason why North County Dublin/Fingal has become a very attractive place to live, work and stay. The fact that the area is renowned for it's top class tourism and hospitality services, with numerous hotels and restaurants providing the finest food and drink, is very attractive to business owners. The work/life balance of the region makes it one of the most desirable places in the country in which to live. The area is also home to some beautiful natural amenities, including a coastline that has excellent Blue Flag beaches, and harbours, most notably at Howth and Skerries. A visit to Malahide Castle, N e w b r i d g e Demesne or Ardgillan Castle, or a game of golf on one of our renowned championship golf courses, all add up to compelling reasons why this region is such a desirable place to set up in business. Its proximity to the city via the Port Tunnel and to the airport, all add up to a most desirable place in which to do business. North County

Dublin/Fingal is home to over 270,000 people. The area is renowned for strong business leadership and inspiring innovation in technology, manufacturing, aviation, financial services, logistics and distribution, quality of food, tourism and hospitality. Fingal is regarded as a 'cando' area, with a diverse local economy and an outstanding quality of life for the people who live and work in the region. The hardworking team at Fingal Dublin Chamber are recognised as one of the best in the country and stand ready to help you and your business. The chamber provides a fully staffed office and members can use the resources of the chamber office and their website (www.fingaldublinchamber.ie) to learn more about how the chamber works to promote and sustain business. The twenty-one member chamber Council meets monthly to work on strategies and policies to improve the value of Chamber membership to members, including frequent networking events in different locations throughout the chamber area. Members receive

invitations to all chamber events many of which are free. There is little doubt that Fingal Dublin Chamber has had a hugely beneficial effect on the business scene in the

county over the past 21 years. The large membership of the organisation, many of whom have experienced the benefits of mentoring and support, is testament to it's continuing success.

‘North County Blitz’ A Great Success The hugely successful third Annual North County blitz took place in the Man O’ War GFC recently. St. Brendan’s were the first to depart their club for the highly anticipated trip to the north County. They were rapidly followed by kids, parents and coaches of St. Margarets, Garristown, Clann Mhuire, Ballyboughal and Fingal Ravens. Last to arrive were the local kids proudly wearing their colours. A quick count identified 200 kids, including 60 from Man O’ War participated in the 23 matches scheduled between 10:15am and 12:45pm. The facilities in Man o’ War were in pristine conditions and in the best spirit of the allinclusive, non-competitive fun games and excellent skills were in evidence throughout the day. Twenty three matches later and the final whistles were blown. All in all, there were two hundred players, 200 medals and some local rivalries renewed. Local Libraries Launch ‘Summer Reading Buzz’ The County Council launched Fingal Libraries Third Summer Reading Buzz 2015 in County Hall, Swords recently. The Summer Reading Buzz is a very busy summer reading programme with lots of events to encourage schoolchildren to continue reading throughout the school holidays. This year’s launch was an energetic and fun event with a musical twist as Fingal Libraries have introduced a Summer Buzz Rap Challenge, Each participating class took part in a three-hour workshop with Gary McCarthy from GMCBeats to create a special RAP on the theme ‘reading and the summer’. There was an excellent submission of very creative entries and the winner of the Summer Buzz Rap Challenge was Oldtown National School. Each class performed their rap songs in the Council Chamber, followed by entertainer Johnny

Phelan from Dublin Street Theatre Ireland performing a juggling act. “The Summer Reading Buzz continues to gather pace each year and is a fun way to engage children in reading for pleasure,” added Yvonne O’Brien, Senior Executive Librarian. “The outcome is improved reading skill and even more importantly it embeds a precious gift - the habit of reading for life.“ To take part in Fingal Libraries Summer Reading Buzz, children must register in their local library. Each child will be given a Summer Reading Buzz membership card. Every time a child returns a book they have read, their Buzz membership card will be stamped with a specially designed Bee stamp. When the card is completed ( when they have read 10 books) the child can then hand the card into the library or post it into the special beehive box where it will be entered into a draw for some prizes.

Local Businesses Ready To Plough Ahead Local companies are preparing to meet thousands of visitors at the new ‘Local Enterprise Village’ at the National Ploughing Championships in September, thanks to the support of the Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO). The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton T.D. has welcomed the plans for the biggest-ever ‘Local Enterprise Village’, which is being built by the network of Local Enterprise Offices for the Ploughing. The Fingal Local Enterprise Office is supporting businesses this year, among them, the 88 Food Company in St. Margarets. Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise in the North County, said that the Local Enterprise Village has doubled in size in recent years, explaining: “We’re supporting local businesses this year and for Fingal businesses looking to expand, the Local Enterprise Village is the ideal gateway to customers across farming communities and rural Ireland. Many of the small businesses being supported by the Local Enterprise Offices will be testing new products and services in September, which in turn, will generate more jobs within those companies in the near future.” In twelve weeks’ time at Ratheniska in County Laois, the Local Enterprise Village will be home to 85 small businesses for the three days of the Championships (September 22nd – 24th), which is Europe’s largest outdoor event. It attracted 279,500 visitors in 2014, generating an estimated €39million in sales.

Since 1st July last, all children under 6 are now eligible for GP care free at the point of service. They will also benefit from age-based assessments focused on health and wellbeing, identifying obesity and other problems early, and the prevention of disease. The assessments will support the HSE in its efforts to prevent obesity in children and will be carried out once when a child is aged 2 and again at age 5, in accordance with an agreed protocol. The service includes an agreed cycle of care for children diagnosed with asthma, under which GPs will carry out an annual review of each child where the doctor has diagnosed asthma. Registration is a simple process requiring each child’s PPS number, gender and date of birth, a parent’s or guardian’s PPS number and contact details and the selection of a GP of choice. If their GP of choice is accepting online registrations they simply submit their completed application online and await GP acceptance. If their GP of choice is not accepting online registrations, they complete the form online, print it and bring it to their GP of choice for acceptance and return it to the HSE by post.

Fun Run In Balbriggan Local families came out in force recently for the 5k fun run/walk in support of Balbriggan Educate Together National School. Organised by the Parent Association, the sun was shining and spirits were high as the group headed off at the sound of the claxton. Certainly making the most of the great weather, the families and even the pets joined in. It was a great way to start the day whilst raising funds for the local school.

Irish Firms To The Fore At Paris Air Show Irish aircraft-leasing firms have come to the fore at the recent Paris Air Show, when they placed almost €10 billion in orders. AerCap led the way when they ordered 100 Boeing jets accounted for the bulk of the buying, with its rival SMBC snapping up 10 passenger planes from the American market. The massive Irish orders managed to push Boeing ahead of its rival Airbus in the battle for commercial air supremacy. AerCap, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, had its headquarters in Holland, but is effectively run from offices in Shannon and Dublin. The aircraft leasing sector, which buys planes and leases them to airlines, is growing thanks to rising demand in Asia and Central and South America, as well as the need to replace ageing planes in Europe and North America.

The most awaited summer season is here. It’s always refreshing to see the sun shine through the windows so early in the morning, clothes hung out to dry in the garden, and flowers blossoming in the garden. The hours are longer, and the days are warmer. Now may be

the perfect time to get started on that summer project you’ve put off because the days were shorter and colder. Here’s the time to redecorate your house, or change the design of your garden. You may be in the mood for some major reconstruction, or possibly

just want to make the house more summer friendly. Whatever you’re thinking of, County Leader have gathered some tips to hopefully inspire you to get started. It is possible to change the look of your home, on the outside and inside on just a small budget.

WILL YOUR WINDOWS OR DOORS LET YOU DOWN THIS WINTER? WE CAN FIX OR REPLACE THEM FOR YOU

Businesses in the North County have some great summer offers to give you the best bargains, and achieve your summer home on a small budget. As the summer’s here, there’s no longer a need for drab colours and heavy materials. Here is a season where your surroundings should be light and breezy to reflect the summer. A popular tip is to replace those heavy winter curtains for lighter, thinner ones. Embrace the sun, it’s not everyday we have it. In

fact, we most probably spend a third of the year in the dark and cold, a little morning sunshine and late nights can’t harm us. Summer’s all about the light colours, and allowing more light into the house will bring summer indoors too. Not only this, but it will also make your rooms appear larger and more spacious. Appearing to have more space reflects the outdoor air and breeze, preparing you for the summer. The living room should be the most vibrant, lively room in the house,

filled with family members, so decorate your living room to reflect this. There’s no longer a need for those thick, wooly blankets on couches, if you tend to use one for comfort, replace the blanket with a nice, pastel coloured throw. Decorate the room with colourful ornaments adding a summery pop of colour. Candles are key to making houses feel like a home. Buy or replace some candles with some subtly sweet ones, similar to summer fruits. There’s nothing more

relaxing and homely, than a candlelit room and subtle lighting. Colourful candles are a great way to add colour,

and comfort also. However, be sure to balance out the colour carefully, with the theme of your house.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask for a very special one (mention it). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. (L.M )
