Friday last, 23rd September was a great day for Balbriggan, when Belgian pharma company, Alter Pharma opened up its new HQ at Stephenstown Industrial estate. The new 48,000 sq ft headquarters will create a further 80 jobs bringing total employment to the new plant to 120 by 2018.

By Patrick Finnegan Alter Pharma CEO, Pieter Van Rompay was joined by Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor and staff from its sister site in Belgium, as well as local representatives at the opening ceremony, including local TD, Alan Farrell, Senator James Reilly, Cllr Tony Murphy and President of Balbriggan Chamber, Luke Moriarty. Mr Van Rompay told the County Leader, “This is a great day for us in such a wonderful facility that will help us to grow and develop. We started in Ireland with just a handful of employees four or five years ago and we are very happy with the business environment, so we decided to invest further. Not only is it the opening of our new facility, it is also the start of something which will continue and that is growth and our desire to grow as a company and this facility will help us with this goal,” he said. “Opening our new €5 million facility

underlines our commitment to Ireland and will allow for our rapid expansion plans. We look forward to continuing to grow our excellent team here to complement our product portfolio,” he said. Local senator, Dr James Reilly welcomed the 80 new jobs for Balbriggan. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Reilly said. “This is a major boost to Balbriggan and signals a bright future for the town. Balbriggan has often felt left behind by the rest of Dublin, but this is certainly a step in the right direction. It’s especially good to see hi-tech companies like Alter Pharma move here, because that’s where the future is. I know that there are also other global hi-tech companies currently looking to set-up in the area. ‘’It’s great to see big companies in flagship industries realising the potential of North County Dublin and coming to create jobs here. We have the infrastructure, the location and the skilled workforce that hi-tech companies like Alter Pharma need. You can see that with Diana and Mari Louise from Loreto Secondary School who came third at the EU contests for Young Scientists this year. We’re close to the airport, the motorway network and to Northern Ireland, which is ideal.” He concluded, ‘’We need to push on and keep

marketing ourselves as a great place to come and set up business. As Seanad spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation that’s just what I’m going to do. We are being successful so far which is demonstrated by the unemployment figures in Balbriggan which are down by 11.5 per cent in the last year.’’ The good news was welcomed by CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert who said, “Alter Pharma’s opening of the headquarters for its worldwide operation in Balbriggan is a major boost for the area. The additional 80 jobs will be very welcome. This, hopefully, is the start of a number of exciting announcements for jobs in North County Dublin. Fingal is now one of the major pharma and bio-pharma centres in the country and this announcement is another major boost for the area,” he said. A new booklet entitled ‘A Life Less Ordinary’ written by well-known historian, Una Eager O’Brien was launched at County Hall, Swords on Wednesday last. The book, which tells the story of some of the members of the Fingal Brigade in 1916 was launched by County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler in the presence of a large gathering of people, despite the inclement weather. Una, who is Chairperson of Rolestown/Oldtown Historical Society and PRO of Fingal Old IRA Commemorative Society thanked County Mayor, Butler and also Gerry Clabby, Heritage Officer of Fingal County Council for his great support in putting the book together. She said, “I set myself the task of researching and writing up the stories of some of the volunteers of the Fingal Brigade. Many of them went on to play an important role in the political life of the new Free State, including men like Richard Mulcahy and Dr Richard Hayes,” she said.

She also went on to speak about what she termed the ‘little men’ which she emphasised was in no way meant in a derogatory manner. These were men whom she describes, as putting their lives on the line and when it was all over, they returned to the lives they had before and she pays tribute to these men in Pictured at the launch of her new book, 'A Life Less Ordinary" at County Hall, Swords is this very interesting, author, Una Eager O'Brien, with County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler and Gerry Clabby informative and well (Heritage Officer, Fingal County Council) researched booklet. Newman Happy With Road Repairs

O’Dwyers Launch Major Development Plan O’Dwyers GAA Club from Balbriggan launched their new Development Plan at a ceremony at the Bracken Court Hotel on Thursday last, which was launched by County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler. In early 2016, a decision was taken by the club to develop a five year strategic development plan. The purpose of this was to guide and advise ongoing management and development, so that O’Dwyers GAA club can maximise its beneficial influence on the local community. The plan covers many different aspects of the club, including fundraising and financial management, club structures and administration, membership and games development. The plan will build on the club’s strengths and deal with potential challenges. Club chairman, Liam Howley spoke to the County Leader about how this Development Plan will have a beneficial impact on this great club. He said, “Two members came to me last January and asked if we could put a plan together because they wanted to move the club forward. It is something I had been trying to do for the past few years, so the club gave them the go ahead. I’m thrilled that we have come this far and we’re delighted to be able to present it to the community this evening,” he said. “The main thrust of the plan is to get teams of all ages coached in a proper manner and at some stage to get ourselves into a new clubhouse, with proper playing facilities and for the children to develop their skills. The town has expanded so

rapidly that we need to expand the club accordingly. We have been working very closely with the County Council and we’re delighted with our progress.” “Balbriggan is one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland and just to put a perspective on it, there are, according to a survey carried out by the club, more children attending primary school in Balbriggan than in all of County Monaghan. It’s our duty to provide facilities for them, ”he said. County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler said, “It’s great to see a great club like O’Dwyers taking an initiative like this and to see all the hard work that has gone into this. Our job as politicians is to help out and it’s much easier to help when clubs put in so much effort themselves. This is a great occasion for O’Dwyers and this document is a very sound basis to take action and so hopefully they’ll achieve their plan and have improved facilities.

Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) is delighted that work has commenced at last on the improvement of the roads in River Valley estate in Swords, which were left in a poor state of repair after previous works by utility companies. He told the County Leader, “In the past few years since being elected, I have been raising the issue of the deterioration of the roads in River Valley. The estate is over 40 years old and there has been lots of work carried out by different utility companies, like ESB, Bord Gais, Telecoms etc. All this work has caused subsidence to the road infrastructure and the cycle ways have deteriorated. I have brought up these and many related issues at Council level and temporary work was carried out near the shops to level out the road there,” he said. Newman continued, “The Engineering Department of the County Council gave a commitment to me that they would contact the utility companies to get them to do repairs on the works they left behind and it has taken until now to sort this out. I’m delighted to see contrac-

tors working on behalf of Bord Gais Networks carrying out repairs to a number of areas where work was carried out. This is an ongoing issue and I intend to carry on making sure that the roads in the estate are returned to their former condition,” he concluded.

“The concept for a Citizens Information Centre in Skerries came from the Skerries D e v e l o p m e n t Association, now known as the Skerries Community Association. The first Chairperson of the Skerries Citizens Information Centre was Mary (Maisie) Grimes, Vice-President was Carmel Boylan, Treasurer Helen Fullam and Honorary Secretary Frances (Fran) McDonough. The service was established with grant-aid at the time from the NSSB (National Social Services Board), as well as fundraising in the

At that time the catchment area for the service included Skerries, Lusk, Rush, Balbriggan, Naul and surrounding areas.” Over the years the centre has moved location from the Health Centre to Holmpatrick Terrace, Churchfield Close, Strand Street, and now finally in New Street, Skerries since February 2010. In 2004, Skerries CIC became part of the Fingal (North County) Citizens Information Service. Andrew explained about the similarity between the service 40 years ago and that of today. “The first query dealt with in 1976 was in relation to a Medical Card, and 40 years later, the service is still dealing with Medical Card queries. Other queries dealt with in those early days include queries on tax, consumer right (hire purchase),

PRSI records, delays with Social Welfare payments, free electricity allowance, social welfare entitlements, and quite a topical one, social housing needs and

employers and the Department of Social Protection. This work is done by specially trained Part Time staff members. In 1976 the service was run purely by volunteers, and information was accessed via a “paperbased” system, and queries were recorded in a “daybook”. The centre has come a long way from those early days of paper based information and local fundraising. In 2016 the service is run by a mix of volunteers, scheme workers and part-time paid staff. Information is updated daily on www.citizensinformation.ie which is the primary source of information. Queries are logged electronically where they can be analysed and extrapolated nationally. Information provision is provided one-to-one, by phone and by email. The service is funded on an annual basis by the Citizens Information Board (who are in turn funded by the Department of Social Protection). Andrew said, “Although time has moved on, the service is still needed now more than ever.” Andrew is also responsible for the Swords, Balbriggan and Malahide centres as well as the Skerries centre. “In the early days the centre dealt with simpler queries and application form requests. Now we deal with much more complex cases, such as social welfare eligibility and entitlements,

The vast majority of our callers come to us through referral from friends / family,” he said. “In order to provide a quality service, we need to ensure our team is trained. As a service we provide mandatory training to all new team members and we support them to attend both internal and external training events.

In addition, team members can complete recognised FETAC accredited training in the area of information provision. Providing correct information and clear options to our clients is key to the reputation of our service. Volunteers are regularly recruited and are required to commit a minimum three hours per week to the service in addition to training / meeting commitments. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers, past and present, the founding

committee, some of whom are with us today, and other team members, for developing, enhancing and growing this service to meet the needs of the people of Skerries,” he stated. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce held a Breakfast Networking event in the imposing surroundings of Bremore Castle in the town last Wednesday morning. The event, which had a limited attendance due to safety restrictions at the Castle, which is still under construction and development, represented the first time for many of the attendees to visit the building. Senior Parks Superintendent with Fingal County Council, Kevin Halpenny gave a very interesting Powerpoint presentation outlining the history of the Castle, dating back to the 15th century, to its demise in the 18th century. It lay in ruins for over 250 years, until 1986, when work commenced on restoring the castle to its former glory. Kevin then brought the assembled gathering on a fascinating tour of the castle, with his deep understanding of history and how the castle is being restored in a most sympathetic way, with much of the restoration being carried out as if it was the 15th century. All present agreed that the County Council are doing a marvellous job in restoring this great castle, which is expected to provide a great tourism boost to Balbriggan when it opens fully to the public. There are 100 acres zoned as a regional park, including a Recreational Hub as part of the plan. Chamber CEO, Sean Corrigan thanked Kevin Halpenny for his expert knowledge and fascinating information about this wonderful project.

We are coming into that time of year when weather conditions will be unkind to the cars that were only a few weeks ago cruising along, embracing those glorious summer weeks, blissfully unaware of the approaching stresses and strains they may have to endure in the months ahead. So, do take some time to consider how you can prepare your car in every way possible for the most unforgiving of seasons. By adhering to the following tips, we can help to avoid those potentially perilous pitfalls:

ANTI-FREEZE As we approach the first frost of the year, a sudden severe lick of winter can occur without warning. Now is the time to prepare for such an eventuality and stock up on a bottle or two of anti-freeze, and fill your car up sooner rather than later. It’ll be too late on that morning you’re in a rush and only realise there’s a thick sheet of ice on your windscreen once you arrive at your car. You don’t want to put yourself in a position

where you feel you have to then rush to your destination. Also, remember to have an ice scraper and de-icer handy. You are likely to be able to pick these items up from a local petrol station or a hardware store, of which there are many here in the North County.

TYRES It cannot be emphasised enough how crucial it is to ensure your tyres are road safe for those looming icy roads. Make sure that both

the tread and pressure of your tyres are in tip-top conditions for those lethal winter months. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to replace that spare tyre you last used. Potholes and uneven roads can cause serious damage to tyres, and during Winter they often fill with water which turns to ice, expanding them and making them much worse. The results of a recent AA survey show that 11 per cent of motorists have had a tyre blow out in the last 4 years. With this in mind, the AA is urging motorists to give their car a bit of TLC. Local garages all over the North County will be able to provide you excellent service and offers to get those tyres up to scratch.

BRAKES

are of critical importance. Stopping distance can be heavily compromised this season, so the functionality and sensitivity of the brakes is crucial to the safety level of the vehicle. It’s worth taking them to a nearby garage to have them checked in the next couple of weeks.

Brakes, as you know,

LIGHTS/ HEATING SYSTEM Daylight hours will become much fewer, and car lights used much more frequently. Therefore, lights need to be fully functioning, not just for your safety, but for other road users too, so double check they’re in working order and road-fit. It’s crucial to ensure the

heating in your car is in fully working order, not only for the sake of comfort, but so that it is efficient in keeping the windscreen clear, avoiding any accidents. So, if in any doubt with either your lights or your heating then get right in touch with your local mechanic.

gloves and a jumper in the car in case you need to get out of your car to make a call, find the nearest petrol station, clear some snow or ice from your car etc. It is also a very wise idea to have a spade in your boot, by which to shovel snow if necessary. It is not only important to be proactive because of the safety of the vehicle, but also to help save you time, stress and money. If you start these maintenance checks early, then you can budget for any additional costs over the next few months at a much more manageable rate. So, this week, whilst you’re shopping right here in the North county, start to pick up those necessary products now rather then later. So do take care, stock up and be well prepared for what the next season brings.
