The Rush Heritage Arts and Tourism Committee, in conjunction with Rush Community Council have announced that they will be organising this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade. They are making every effort to try and ensure that the Rush parade is the best in the North County. Angela Byrne of Rush Heritage Arts and Tourism said, “Our theme is RUSH in 1916 and we are encouraging all businesses, clubs and groups to get ‘themed’ and join our

Team 16. We are putting together a vision of what Rush was like in 1916 and will have a heritage trail available by train on St Patrick’s day and a walking trail available after that. We will be encouraging our local Pipe Band, Musical Society Theatre, GAA club, Sailing club, Golf, Soccer and Cricket clubs, as well as the Tidy Towns and GIY to come on board and get ‘themedup,’ she said. “There will be music dancing and entertainment all along

the main street, together with a Fun Day at the Scout Den.” The organisers envisage local shop owners re-creating ‘mock-up’ facades of what their premises looked like in 1916 and placing the mock-up in front of their current shop on the day. They are also hoping that men, women and children will dress in clothes typical of what people of Rush would have worn in 1916, perhaps a military uniform or costume from the period.

Well known RTÉ broadcaster, Vivienne Traynor from Skerries has taken up the voluntary role of ambassador for Organ Donor Awareness Week 2016 which is organised by the Irish Kidney Association. Vivienne has a deep personal connection to organ donation, as her nephew, Martin Traynor, also from Skerries underwent two kidney transplants, his first for which she was the living kidney donor and five years later his second transplant was from a deceased donor. Vivienne, the RTÉ News Anchor and Courts correspondent, witnessed firsthand the whole process of organ donation and transplantation from a deceased donor for her nephew Martin (now age 35) in November 2014. This was a very different experience from five years previously when she was a living kidney donor to him. Following the first transplant which they underwent in the UK, Martin became a father for the first time to Ted (now 3). Vivienne, the 44 year old mother of four, also completed a Law Degree in 2014. The circle of life continued after Martin’s second transplant at Beaumont Hospital and he and his partner Mary have since become parents for the second time with a baby sister Daisy (now 10 months) for Ted. Vivienne said “When news came through that a second kidney was available for Martin, I was at first elated, but this feeling was very quickly replaced by thoughts for the deceased donor and their family. I was really touched that a family in the midst of all their grief took the time to consider someone else. I cannot find the words to express what that meant to us at that moment, on that day and every day since. It is something I think of regularly and I know Martin thinks about it every day. To see Martin come back from surgery in a matter of hours and given a whole new lease of life, was one of the greatest things I have witnessed. The kindness of strangers meant so much to us that day.” Vivienne said, “I was honoured to be able to donate a kidney to Martin in July 2009 and I am delighted to have been invited by the Irish Kidney Association to be the ambassador for Donor Awareness Week and I hope that by sharing the story of donation and transplantation in our family we can help other families to start the conversation about their wishes surrounding deceased organ donation.” The 2016 campaign will feature Vivienne Traynor in radio advertising as well as on posters, encouraging the public to support organ donation. There are approximately 700 people in Ireland awaiting lifesaving heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants.

Speaking to the County Leader, following the launch of Fianna Fáil’s Transport Policy document A Better Deal For Commuters, O’Brien said the revised Metro North project, as announced by Minister Paschal Donohue was dramatically different with half the capacity originally proposed. “The Luas strike has once again highlighted the importance of public transport to the people who live and work in Dublin. Local Farmers Vent Their Fury Fingal Farmers Group held a meeting on Wednesday last, 17th February, before a packed gathering at the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan. The meeting was called to vent their anger and frustration to candidates in the upcoming General Election, who were present on the night, They spoke passionately about their fears and anger over rural crime and the fact that they are the forgotten sector in North County Dublin. Independent Alliance candidate, Cllr Tony Murphy called for changes in bail conditions for repeat offenders. Murphy, who is running as an Independent Candidate in the upcoming General Election, addressed a meeting arranged by the Fingal Farmers Group and Dublin IFA. This joint meeting was called to highlight the growing and disturbing problem of trespass with menaces which has been affecting North County farmers over the past number of years. The problem has been compounded by the closure of local Garda stations and the reduction of Garda personnel available to respond to calls for assistance. Murphy told the packed and sometimes angry audience that the present situation, where repeat offenders are granted bail and allowed back into the community to re-offend should be stopped. Farmers and their families are regularly harassed and threatened by these people while they scope out farms for future thefts. “This is not right and needs to be addressed immediately,” said Murphy.

Skerries RNLI Volunteers Walk Red Carpet Volunteer lifeboat crew from three RNLI stations in Dublin were in Dundrum on Wednesday, 17th February for the Irish Gala screening of Disney’s latest action film ‘The Finest Hours’. Volunteers, Gerry Canning and Eoin Kelly from Skerries RNLI, Manus O’Donnell from Howth RNLI and Paul Cummins and Jack Shanahan from Dun Laoghaire RNLI were invited to swap lifeboats for the limelight as they shared the red carpet with guests at the high-action movie

premiere at Dundrum Town Centre. The film tells the incredible true story of the heroic 1952 Pendleton rescue mission carried out by the US Coast Guard which is still regarded as one of the greatest sea rescues of all time. Owing to the long and close relationship that the RNLI holds with the US Coast Guard, it was highly appropriate for Disney and the RNLI to work together in Ireland, while helping to raise awareness of the charity’s lifesaving work. Speaking following the gala screening, Gerry Canning from Skerries RNLI said: ‘It was great to see such strong parallels between the bravery, selflessness and community spirit shown by the characters in the film which is mirrored by RNLI lifeboat crew all around Ireland.”

Residents Present Submissions On Modular Housing Residents of Pinewood estate in Balbriggan presented submissions to the County Council at County Hall, Swords on Friday last, in protest at the decision to site 40 modular homes in Balbriggan. Speaking to the County Leader, Cllr Tony Murphy, General Election candidate said, “Proper social housing would be preferable I

would say, but I think what they have in this context is something that will create social exclusion. It’s not clever in the way its being delivered. It was a knee jerk reaction to a massive crisis that we have and we need to look at a more positive way of delivery.” “I think its good to create an issue with people coming from other

a r e a s where the m a i n supports are and Cllr. Murphy where their families exist into an area that they don’t know. There is a complete lack of service in Balbriggan at the moment for people who already live there and this is only going to compound the problems,” he said. Sheena O’Reilly, Assistant secretary for Pinewood Residents Association management said, “We are currently going to present Liam Burke with 361 written submissions and there’s currently 20 online. so we have a petition with over 200 names on that to present . We would totally back social housing, as we know the land is already zoned for social housing and we have no problem with it, we just feel that modular housing is not the way to go,” she said. “It is a transient thing at the end of the day and these people have gone through enough. We feel they’ve already been put into temporary accomodation. These are families who deserve to put down roots and raise their kids in a built up proper area, and we would support proper social housing,” she concluded.

We know that the first five years of a child’s life last a lifetime. We want to invest in the early years so that we keep the recovery going and no child in the North County is left behind. We must invest early to save later.” He went on to further discuss Fine Gael’s future plans; “We want to give parents in Dublin Fingal more quality time with their children, so we are going to provide an additional eight weeks parental leave, to be taken by either parent in the first year of the child’s life. We also want to make childcare more affordable for working families. We’ll do this by providing a €2,000 annual subsidy for children aged 9 months to 36 months who are attending childcare facilities. We are also committed to free dental care for under 6s and new in-school speech and language services in primary schools to support young children early.” Farrell concluded.

does? Well a good start would be to treat her to breakfast in bed as a thank you for doing the laundry, a box of chocolates for finding something you said was lost, or a bouquet of flowers for all her advice. March 6th is the date you don’t want to forget this year if you want all these things to continue. If what you’re most grateful for about your mother is her cooking, then why not take her out for dinner. Everyone knows your dinner is always nicer when it’s handed to you, so why not make an evening of it? Tell her to put on her finest and head out on the town, and this way there won’t be any washing up for anyone to do. You will be spoilt for choice, as there are many delightful restaurants and hotels here in the North County, as well as many cafés and bars if you are looking to treat her to lunch or perhaps afternoon tea. If she would rather stay at home, then dinner is on you, a nice pork roast on a Sunday evening ; what could be better? Her feet up with a cup of tea in the new personalised mug you got her for Mother’s Day. If you’re better at pancakes than you are at pork, then why not make her breakfast in bed? Make sure she is comfortable and cosy when you present her with her presents in the morning, and let her relax before the festivities of the day begin. Whether you’re taking her out for dinner or staying at home, but don’t want her to know

what’s going on, then why not send her out for the day to get pampered with a voucher for a salon, or to get her nails done so she can look her best on her special day and relax. Why not get her makeup done, or give her a voucher for her favourite shop and get herself something lovely to wear. She would have her choice of where she would like to treat herself as the North County has multiple salons, beauty bars and many shops and shopping centres to choose from. Planning ahead is a crucial thing if you want to ensure she has the best day possible. Get your card and flowers in as early as possible, as the best ones go quickly. If you are getting her a personalised gift like a frame or a photo put on a phone cover, then you need to predict the time needed to create the gift. Personalised gifts are something extra special to give to your mother, as a way of going that extra mile to show her your appreciation. Depending on what her own personal taste is, you can personalise something that she could use like a bag, a set of coasters or a watch that’s been engraved with a loving message. If that is too expensive for you, then you could make her something cheap, but thoughtful like a collage of pictures put into an album or a frame. Other options include writing her a poem, you could make her a booklet of vouchers for her to use. If she’s into flowers then why not go to a flower market and make your own bouquet of all her favourite flowers, Mother’s Day always falls in March in the daffodil and sunflower season, two lovely spring flowers to present her with in the morning. If she’s the outdoor type and has her own flowers growing, then why not get her some new garden accessories, according to the leading gift idea websites, the top gifts this year are all heading towards the outdoors, garden utensils, cameras, outdoor radios etc…Whatever your Mother’s Day plans are this year whether it be lunch, dinner or a shopping trip, make sure you make it very special for the most important person in your life.

North County secondary schools are part of the 15,000 students across Ireland that took part in the GloHealth challenge last year. The GloHealth School’s Mile Challenge is calling on Dublin pupils to run, jog or walk a manageable one-mile distance in order to promote health and fitness through recreational participation in sport. The Challenge is open to secondary school students of all fitness abilities and can be organised by an individual class or across the entire school. In 2015 an estimated 15,000 pupils all over Ireland took the GloHealth School’s Mile Challenge, which is a joint initiative between Athletics Ireland and the Irish

Schools Athletic Association. Local parents, teachers and pupils are now being encouraged to support this fantastic initiative in 2016, which can be held during or after school hours on school grounds and is easy to implement. Every student who takes part has their time recorded and is awarded with a coloured wristband, which represents their one mile completion time. Schools can also arrange a repeat challenge which is often the case, as they aim to improve their times and upgrade their wristbands. Speaking to the County Leader, Irish Schools Athletic Director Anthony White said “The GloHealth School’s

Mile Challenge is a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people in the North County to get active and involved in a healthy form of exercise. The initiative is about enjoyment and participation open to all students, the main purpose is to promote running or walking as part of a balanced healthy lifestyle.” Now in its fifth year, the challenge has recorded the highest number of participants with 15,000 students across 57 schools nationwide taking part in this initiative in 2015.

Also speaking to the County Leader, Jim Dowdall, CEO, GloHealth said “GloHealth is delighted to support the School’s Mile Challenge, as we are acutely aware of the proven relationship between participation in sport and its impact on a child’s current and future health, as well as the range of direct and indirect benefits associated with ongoing physical activity.” If your school would like to take on the GloHealth School Mile Challenge please contact Anthony White by email: schools@athleticsireland.ie or telephone: (01) 8669933.

Life Changing Career Opportunity For Jobseekers There is a wonderful, life changing opportunity for jobseekers, who are eager to re-enter the jobs scene, with the news that a new training programme for a career in Tourism and Hospitality is about to commence. This opportunity is exclusively for jobseekers who are eligible to qualify. In order to be eligible to participate in the Momentum Programme, applicants must be on the Live Register for 312 days out of the last 18 months. They must be claiming Jobseekers/Benefit/Allowance or Credits. They must also be actively seeking work, be over 18 years of age and have an excellent command of both written and oral English. This means you’re eligible for retraining and reactivation programme. Instead of just doing a course and returning to the live register, there is a programme that is funded nationally by Solas, which is called Momentum. Siobhan Kinsella, Director of Cpl Institute explained how this programme works. She said, “What this involves is using the

The Cpl Institute is one of the largest contractors in the country involved in this programme. When people have been through long term unemployment, they have already gone through a really tough time, where their confidence is particularly low. They may believe that there is no help out there and that nobody is prepared to give them a chance at real employment, there is someone there now to help. Ms Kinsella said, “How we design the programme is to give the learners an advantage, not only over other unemployed people, but over people already working in the industry. We then ask them where they would like to work and

Ian Taplin Ian Taplin had been unemployed since he did his Leaving Cert three years ago. Now 20, he spoke about his experience with the course; “I was on the social welfare for a good few months and I was just looking for something that would get me started working and something that would get me experience. I went looking for something that would get me into hotels and I found the Tourism and Hospitality course.” He told us that the areas covered by the course were what really attracted him to it; “They had a good few qualifications that I was really interested in, like Customer Service that would help me with a lot of things I want to do in the future.” He went to say: “It actually really helped me because I got a job in Lidl straightaway after the course, as store assistant, which helped get me experience, which will help me to get future jobs. The course was 3 months training and then a 3 month work placement,” he said.

private sector to train you with skills that industry actually wants, to organise work placement for you and ultimately a job. What is very important about the programme is that it is designed by industry for industry to provide real jobs and real employment opportunities.” She explained how to apply for this much sought after course. “We want anybody who is interested in this programme to go to their local Intreo office and ask to go on the Cpl Hospitality and Tourism course, so that by next Christmas they will be in full employment and be able to provide for their families. If this course is for you, then you will be given every support from Cpl to make sure that you get the job you always wanted and to make a real change to your life,” she said. This training programme will combine much sought after industry specific knowledge and skills, along with a structured assessed work placement. Learners will gain the theoretical knowledge of Tourism and Hospitality, as well as the practical skills to be a huge addition to a potential employer, all of which is delivered by people with solid industry experience and connections.

we approach these companies to see if they will interview these people. We will train them, to make sure they have the skills and certificates in areas like health and safety and in the skill needed for the particular industry they have chosen.” Learners will also develop skills to ensure a positive dining experience

Gerard Madden Gerard Madden is one student who successfully completed the Cpl Tourism and Hospitality course. He spoke about what the course has done for him; “I am working in the Maldron Dublin Airport Hotel in the Accommodation Department. I used to work in a hotel years ago, and I found it impossible to get back into it.” Madden is 35 and from Balbriggan originally however, he now lives in the City Centre. “As soon as I finished the course, I got a job because of it. I had been on the dole before the course for a good few years due to the recession. I found it very hard to find work,” he said. He did two successful work placements through CPL before he got his current position. He had been working on building sites before his period of unemployment and was seeking a change when he stumbled upon the course. He completed the course in 2015 and did a 10 week placement in the job he is currently still in.

which meets the needs of both the establishment and the customer to ensure return business. Acquired skills will include front of house/concierge and food and beverage service skills. learners will study broad based industry specific modules, such as Customer Service, Food Hygiene, Meal Service, Work Experience and Plate and Tray skills. They will then be chosen for a work placement where they get to display and hone the skills they’ve learned. Cpl will support them in the work placement and, as a result, many of the work placements become permanent. If this does not happen, then they will get the person an interview to go for a job somewhere else. “It is important that people must choose the environment they want to work in and they must be chosen by the employer through interview. So far, we have got jobs for 572 people through the Momentum programme, who had been unemployed for more than a year.” Ms Kinsella continued, “At the moment, we have a course about to open in Swords, which will be based at the Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport (formerly Bewley’s) and we have industry trained people ready to train these people. We need people to know that this represents a real opportunity to change your life, to gain an income, to be supported every

Caoimhe Tyndall Swords native, Caoimhe spoke to us abut her current position in Insomnia Coffee and how she found the course helpful: “I found out about the course through a friend of mine who had a great success rate with getting jobs after the course, I heard that everyone was getting jobs out of it, so I decided to go for it myself.” “Before the course I had gone to college for a year, I decided college wasn’t for me, classrooms were never my thing, but this was different. We weren’t in the classroom the whole time, we were actually using our hands and there was a lot of project based work as well,” she said. Caoimhe is still working for the company where she did her initial work placement; “I am not just working full time I’m working overtime at the moment. I got my placement from the course with Insomnia and I’m still with them now. The placement was 13 weeks and they kept me on at the end of that. I’m officially employed since October.” She concluded by saying: “The last four months have been amazing, I’ve gone from being just a trainee learning everything, to being a key holder to the premises and being trusted with many other responsibilities. I’m even training in new people now as well, and that is all down to the skills that the course has given me.”

step of the way by people who have a proven track record in this field.” People deciding to go on the course can retain their social welfare benefits for the duration of the course, until they move into employment. What makes this programme different is that it is not just certificates to say you have the skills, or QQI certificates. What’s different about this programme is that you have practical experience in a hotel or hospitality environment. You also have a reference from that employer where two-thirds of those work placements tend to go permanent in that environment. For those that don’t get permanent positions, Cpl will keep working with that person until they get a job opportunity. Training is carried out by Cpl tutors in the Clayton Hotel. The course will include a three week induction, followed by a 10week Specific Skills Directed Training. Then follows a 10-week Work Placement. There will be an extra four weeks Work Placement for under 25s. The entire course will be for a duration of 23 weeks for over 25s and 27 weeks for under 25s. While in training in the Clayton Hotel, there will be industry trainers there for the appropriate skills required. Ms Kinsella continued, “We spend three weeks working on the person and what they’ve gone through before we start teaching them specific skills training, where their confidence is restored. Even after the skills training is finished, we bring them back every two weeks to monitor their progress.” “Skills on this programme include health and safety, manual handling, food hygiene, customer service and communications, as well as all the practical skills. The course begins on 29th February and it is vital that anybody interested in completing this course should visit their Intreo Office immediately, and ask to go on the Cpl Hospitality and Tourism course, as soon as possible, as spaces are limited,” she said. n any community, be it urban or rural, there needs to be a focal point in order to provide it with the vibrancy necessary for it to grow and thrive. In many cases this is provided by the local post office and the growing community of Lusk is no exception. The new modern post office here is a perfect example of such a focal point working perfectly. The official opening of the new, state of the art Lusk Post Office took place on Friday last amid great excitement and fanfare and was welcomed by all. Congratulations & Best Wishes to Linda From

Lusk Post Office, which was previously located at Costcutters in the village, opened its new premises to its many customers at Casey’s SuperValu just before Christmas, but the official opening was delayed until last Friday. Postmistress, Linda Neary is very conscious of the role that her customers play in supporting her and her two staff, Bridget Teeling and Donna Blessing. She also acknowledges the part that post offices play in the local community, and Lusk Post Office is a prime example of this. Linda said, “Many of my customers here at SuperValu wondered if there was going to be a celebration to mark the opening, so I thought that this would be a

to come here on Pension Day and meet old friends and have a chat. On Friday mornings there are about six men and they’re here from about 8.30am and they’re chatting and solving all of the world’s problems. politics. All issues are threshed about and solved with banter and good humour. If someone is missing, they wonder why,” said Linda. This is the essence of community life and it beggars belief that post offices had been in the firing line for closure, just as happened to banks and garda stations, leaving local communities without a

But Lusk Post Office isn’t just any post office, as along with the normal services like pensions, social welfare payments, stamps etc, they also provide Banking, including AIB cheque lodgements and Ulster Bank cash lodgements. Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal held a Movie Benefit Gala Night at Movies@Swords in the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords on Thursday last, 18th February. The chosen film was ‘Spotlight’ which was based on the Pulitzer Prize winning investigation into child sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston. The evening was to raise funds for two charities, namely Remember Us Special Needs Support Group, which is based in Balbriggan and are currently seeking funding for a new base in the town and Chimteka Children Support, which is dedicated to changing the lives of children in Malawi. Rotary Club President, Michael Kennedy welcomed the gathering and introduced well-known film critic, Michael O’Doherty who gave a very favourable review of the film, saying that it should have been nominated for Oscar glory, such was its powerful portrayal of such a poignant subject. The event, which was attended by a large group of Rotarians and their friends, who enjoyed a pre show drinks reception and the film, whilst harrowing, was one that had the audience captivated with its exposure of abuse over three decades.

SPRING GARDENS Spring is finally here and you can notice the slight stretch in the evenings and the mornings a little brighter. It is also getting a little bit warmer, even though bitterly cold nights, with heavy frosts are also commonplace. When everything starts growing and flourishing, many of you will know the feeling tingling in your fingertips: The urge to go outside, turn over the soil and start planting - be it vegetables or colourful flowers, is overpowering. This extra day in February is a great opportunity to catch up on all sorts of things that there usually isn’t time for and that includes a lie in!” says Lisa Artis, of The Sleep Council.” The Sleep Council has offered some ideas on how to make the most of the extra day: First turn your alarm clock off. Having an extra day is a great excuse to catch up on some much needed sleep. Turn off your alarm and enjoy waking up naturally. If having a

duvet day is a rarity, then take this chance to bury your head under the covers and indulge in some relaxation time. Take time out. When busy lives take over, spending quality time with your partner or children can be hard to come by. Why not choose your favourite films and have a movie day in bed? If retail therapy is something that you enjoy why not hit the shops. If you’ve been having problems sleeping, use the extra day to find your new mattress. A good bed is essential for a good night’s sleep and will set you in good stead for the rest of the year. To make the bed buying process easier, look for the NBF Approved ‘big tick’ label to make sure that the bed you’re buying is safe, clean and honest. Tackle your ‘to dos’. Unfortunately we can’t avoid those everyday household tasks but if your ‘to do’ list never gets shorter, then use this day to complete them. Undone jobs can often play on the brain causing sleepless nights so tick off your tasks and enjoy a restful night.

Elections, Referendum and Election Funds Lots of different issues faced those attending the EU Summit meeting last week in Brussels. The big issue was of course the UK’s renegotiations of its terms of membership of the EU. There is little doubt but that Cameron will get a package which he can claim as a victory. This along with the support of the Labour Party will see the UK vote next June to remain part of the EU. But the migrant issue was the first hot potato which they had to deal with. Merkel, who has shown such leadership, is finding it hard to gather committed followers from amongst her fellow heads of government. It is important for her that other countries commit to her vision. If she is left isolated in Europe she will face real difficulties at home. It was expected that the Government in Ukraine would lose the recent no confidence vote and that this would result in the resignation of Yatsenyuk the PM. Some political moves saw a number of MPs abstain allowing the Government win. Two of the coalition parties then left the

23.02.2016

Government. Yatsenyuk now has thirty days to put together a new governing coalition. This seems possible as he is now in talks with the Radical Party. Russian interests in Ukraine continue. Last week that country filed a case in the London High Court to secure the repayment of a $3billion plus By Cathal Boland interest of $7.5 million which it say is owed by Ukraine as a result of a bond default. French President, François Hollande has his own reasons to be concerned about Russia. He must be worried by reports that Marine Le Pen’s National Front is building their presidential war chest by seeking loan support from Russia. Others faced their own domestic challenges, such as Enda Kenny fighting an election here at home. The caretaker Spanish PM Rajoy whose Popular Party, despite winning the most seats in last December’s General Election failed to come close to a majority. Rajoy declined the King’s invitation to try to form a government and now acts as a caretaker PM, while Pedro Sánchezto the Socialist Leader seeks support to establish a majority. On March 2nd. Parliament will decide if it will support him in forming a Government. Should Pedro not get the nod, fresh elections will be held, according to Rajoy’s comments, on June 26th , days after the UK Referendum.

National Forensic Hospital Potential For Local Disaster While the news that construction is about to begin for the new National Forensic Hospital in St. Ita’s Hospital Portrane is great for the National Mental Health Service, it seems that the construction phase itself is causing more than a few problems for local residents in the area. The general expectation within the Community was that there would be some infrastructural improvements in the area prior to the construction of the hospital, especially around the roads and footpaths at some of the pinch points in and around the village of Donabate. USI Calls for An End To Zero Hour Contracts The Union of Students in Ireland is urging the next Government to end Zero Hour Contracts and take steps to tackle unpaid internships ahead of the General Election. Kevin Donoghue, USI President, said students who are employed with zero hour contracts feel insecure and powerless at work, and called precarious work practises such as JobBridge and unpaid internships “exploitation of young workers”. Speaking to the County Leader, Kevin Donoghue, USI President, said, “Zero hour contracts are a disservice to everyone involved. They

erode stability and increase employment insecurity for employees. People who are contracted with low hours can feel insecure and powerless at work.” The USI is urging the next Government to amend the Terms of Employment Information Acts 1994 - 2012 to require employers to provide a statement of working hours which are a true reflection of the hours required of an employee. Donoghue went on to say; “USI is also calling on the next Government to legislate for abolition of unpaid internships in favour of a system

that enhances the experience of participants, improves quality and increases progression into secure and sustainable employment.” “The Government in 2009 imposed cuts in the Jobseekers Allowance for young people under the age of 26.” Donoghue said, “However, the 2013 Budget saw similar cuts reach young people up to the age of 25 as a tactic to encourage young people to seek work. JobBridge started in 2011 as a temporary initiative which is becoming a permanent, defective and flawed programme,” he added.
