Dublin Airport To Double Size of T2 Car Park Dublin Airport is investing €14 million to expand its short-term car parking facilities to meet growing customer demand for spaces located close to the terminals. Work has started on a major upgrade at the airport’s Terminal 2 multi-storey car park, which will more than double the number of available spaces. The €14 million project will add a further 1,400 spaces to the T2 car park, as four new floors will be added to the existing structure, which was designed to allow for future expansion. The upgrade will bring the overall number of car parking spaces within the T2 multistorey facility to more than 2,500. “This is a major investment in additional customer car parking at Terminal 2,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison. “We are expecting another year of passenger growth in 2015 and this increase in car park capacity means more customers will be able to park conveniently close to T2,” he added.

Skerries RNLI volunteers saved a man from drowning last Wednesday afternoon as they were responding to an emergency call on their pagers. Skerries RNLI volunteer crew, Stephen Crowley was giving one of his fellow volunteers, helm David Knight a lift ashore from his own boat shortly after 5pm on Wednesday afternoon when the pagers were set off. As they made their way to the slipway at the back of the harbour to get to the lifeboat station, they encountered a man in the water who had become separated from his personal watercraft and was struggling to stay afloat. They managed to get a rope around the man and help him onto the side of their boat and began bringing the man to shore. As they approached the shore they were joined by two more volunteers, helm Philip Ferguson and crew Emma Wilson. The man was helped ashore and was assessed for any first aid requirement. Speaking after the call out, Gerry Canning, Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer for Skerries RNLI said: “Fortunately our volunteers were on hand almost instantly. It is important to remember that whatever your activity, wearing a well-fitted, and suitable lifejacket or buoyancy aid, could save your life.”

Locals Wanted To Volunteer Around The Community Fingal Volunteer Centre is calling on the public to get involved in volunteering in the community next month – as National Volunteering Week takes place from May 11-17th. National Volunteering Week highlights the multitude of ways that individuals and organisations can get involved in supporting causes, aiding charities and helping in their local communities. Research commissioned by Volunteer Ireland has found that for 20 per cent of people, the main barrier to getting involved in volunteering is not knowing where or how to find opportuni-

Additional research found that the most common place where people volunteer, at 72 per cent, is with a local charity. The most common motivation to volunteer was to support a specific cause (55 per cent), while helping out in the local community was the priority for 53 per cent of volunteers. To signpost people to where the multitude of opportunities lie, the local centre is highlighting the ways that people can make the most of volunteering week. Fingal Volunteer Centre, Manager, Daiga Ancikovska said: “The key step is to go to volunteer.ie where people can find a volunteering role near them to suit their interest or skill. Alternatively people can call into us here,” she said.

Teacher, Helen Hennessy explained to the County Leader about how the programme works. “We are partnered with primary schools in Sweden, Denmark, France and two schools in Wales. Over the past three years we have visited all these school and exchanged ideas and information on our education systems and culture. Beginning on Monday, 20th April, we hosted a visit from all our partner schools to Malahide. During the week, we showed them aspects of our school life and culture. In the afternoons we brought our visitors to local and Dublin cultural attractions, amid wonderful weather conditions,” she said. “Throughout the term of the project, our pupils have engaged in joint projects with pupils in our partner countries. Last year, we made a video showing our treasured personal items. This year, one of our fourth classes worked jointly with our Danish friends to write a creative story.” “The theme of the whole project has been, “Tell me your story,” We feel through participating in this project we have truly learned that we all have a story to tell and that respect for our similarities and differences must be the cornerstone of our schools and communities.

Positive News For Our Local Beaches Overall Last week’s report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about the quality of bathing water around Ireland, has highlighted significant progress in the standard of our bathing water, here in the North County. Seven local beaches were tested under the strict new EPA regulation, with six of them passing the regulations, which varied from good to excellent. The six beaches include, Balbriggan, Skerries South Beach, Loughshinny, Brook Beach Portrane, Balcarrick Beach Donabate and Velvet Strand Portmarnock. Unfortunately, South Beach in Rush failed to pass the strict regulations. Despite this, Peter Webster, a co-author of ‘Bathing Water Quality in Ireland’, said that although the water quality at Rush failed to

meet the standards, it did not mean it was unsafe to swim in. This was because the data was based on four years of sampling, and that a few high values over this period could result in the water being classed as ‘poor’ quality.” “It does not mean it’s unsafe to swim. The local authority is required to erect signage to state the water quality classification. We would advise people to check the water quality. Bathing areas which failed, including Rush will still be monitored during 2015, and the current water quality may well be fine,” he said. Meanwhile, Rush based Fianna Fáil councillor, Brian Dennehy is among those who are demanding an explanation from local Minister James Reilly after the only beach in Rush has been forced to restrict bathing due to sewage pollution. Dennehy has blamed the Government for failing to complete the sewage scheme in Rush despite the funds being allocated to do so years ago.

Malahide Resident Goes Conferring In India A Malahide resident recently took part in a unique conferring event in India. The conferring of University College Dublin (UCD) diplomas recently took place for almost 250 teachers in some of the most impoverished and remote areas of Northeast India. Global Schoolroom, a Malahide-based educational non governmental organisation (NGO), which has been working in the Northeast of India since 2006, facilitates this diploma in association with UCD. Malahide resident Dr. Garret Campbell, founder and CEO of Global Schoolroom, represented the President of UCD and presented parchments in the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura to almost
250 Indian teachers. In his address, he spoke of the need to value the teaching profession worldwide by ensuring that teachers’ pay and conditions are appropriate to the hugely important work they do. This, he said, will “ensure that the best and brightest people will be attracted to enter the teaching profession.” He pointed to the responsibility of teachers, as parents entrusted them with the care of their children. He went on to comment that the role of the teacher is to help develop the minds of the future through creating a nurturing and caring environment in their classroom where all children can learn and achieve at their own

Parish Council In Malahide The current term of the Parish Pastoral Council ends in June. Any parishioner who is interested in serving on the Council should hand their names into the Parish Office in Malahide. A number of vacancies will arise and after a brief training programme a selection will be made. The Council meets monthly, except for July and August and has an advisory role to assist the Parish Priest.
A Swords student has won a top award in the national MATHletes competition. St Finian’s student, Jordyn Maguire beat off stiff competition and came first in all of Dublin and first in all of Ireland in his category. The Swords school did exceptionally well in the challenging contest; out of 12.000 students who took part nationally, seven St. Finian’s students made it to the final, which places them in the top five per cent of all entrants. The final took place in Google headquarters on the 18th of April. The school’s finalists were Jordyn Maguire, Prosper Nyarko, Narimantas Bartkus,

Some countries including Ireland, the UK and Denmark have opted out of this programme. Juncker did not get support at last week’s summit from the EU Council when he pushed a policy on legal immigration and settlement of 10,000 refugees across the EU. The best that our leaders could agree was a pilot settlement project, while pursuing a programme for the rapid return of illegal migrants from frontline member states. In respect of the pilot scheme, Juncker said “for us now to be more ambitious, but nonetheless the conclusion will allow us to continue our discussions.” Countries such as Italy, Malta and Greece, which are immediately affected by the flow of migrants may be afforded some relief by this measure, but it is not the solution and certainly not for those who, in desperation, leave their homes and risk their lives to find refuge in Europe. It is, of course, reasonable for the EU to protect itself against illegal economic immigration, it is not right to turn away those who seek our help as they flee war zones.

We have raised, over the past two years, the EU’s capacity to deal with the issue of the migration and we touched on it with Brian Hayes in last week’s article. The issue is now central stage, with hurried summits called as the scale of recent drownings brought the crisis to international news headlines. During the election campaign last year, Juncker championed an EU wide asylum policy, the bases of which could be built on the existing Blue Card system, which aims to attract highly skilled workers and provides “right of residence” to migrants.
Triangle shaped ladies have fabulous legs and a trim waist to show off! The recently opened Applegreen Service Station on North Street in Swords is having a profound effect on business and traffic flow to that end of the town. Franchise holder, Brian Geoghegan was very upbeat about the service the new facility is proving for residents of Swords and beyond. Brian, who lives in Rush is married with two children told the County Leader about his plans to enhance the service he already provides for his customers. He also has the franchise for Subway and Burger King at Applegreen. “We were second in the AllIreland for our Subway, which is a wonderful achievement for us,” he said. Brian attributes the success of Applegreen in North Street to the tremendous work of his very hard working and diligent staff, who, as he says, “give customers a very pleasant first impression through their friendly and caring manner, as well as their excellent work ethic.” In total there are 38 staff employed in the three companies. “We made sure that our staff members were focused on customer service and that they

Local TD Alan Farrell (FG), has said that the new Organic Farming Scheme, launched by the Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, will support farmers who wish to avail of the growing market opportunities in the organic food sector around the North County. “I am pleased that the Organic Farming Scheme has been opened for application, by Minister Tom Hayes, with immediate effect. The Organic Farming Scheme aims to support farmers to avail of the growing market opportunities which exist for organic food. I would urge farmers in the North County to consider applying to this scheme, particularly as it offers significantly increased rates of aid to successful applicants, both in conversion and when fully established as an organic farm,” Farrell told the County Leader. “Under this scheme, farmers would enter into a contract for a minimum of five years, during which they would receive standard rates of up to €220 per hectare each year, and
up to €170 per hectare when their farm has achieved full organic status. However, higher payment rates are

available for organic horticultural and tillage farmers. Applications must be made online, and while there is no requirement to use an Agricultural Advisor to make an application, those who wish to have their advisor make the application on their behalf are able to do so,” Farrell explained. “It is positive that the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is providing such support to farmers, and to those involved in horticultural farming, in realising their potential in the organic food sector and I would urge all interested farmers in the North County to consider applying to this scheme.”
President Presents Flag To Portmarnock School Recently, Portmarnock Community School (PCS) attended The Thomas F Meagher Foundation presentation of The National Flag to schools from across the country. The national flag was ceremonially presented to representatives from over 300 schools from around the North County and beyond by President, Michael D Higgins. The school was represented by Mr. Donal Higgins, Mr. Niall FitzGerald, Cian Gargan, Meadbh Donnelly and Orla Burke who received the flag on behalf of PCS. The President spoke passionately about cultural identity and the importance of our past heritage and the peace and reconciliation that now unites us as a people. As an emerging diverse and multi cultural society our flag proudly represents a nation that is consolidated by peace and reconciliation. “The raising of a flag has been an integral part of our school routine, so it was very fitting that we attended this historical event celebrating the founding of our flag by Thomas F Meagher and we now look to the future where the raising of the flag will continue to be an important event in our school life celebrating identity, culture and diversity,” said a sportsperson for the school.

Spring and all its delights is here, and we’ve been spoiled recently with the gorgeous spell of sunny weather, which lifted the
spirits of everyone in the North County. We’re back again this week to give you more tips on how to breath fresh life into your home and
garden this season.

MO BACTER ORGANIC LAWN FERTILISER & MOSS REMOVER Mo Bacter slow release organic fertiliser from Belgium is a granular organic fertiliser which removes moss, feeds the grass and improves the soil all in one. Mo Bacter organic fertiliser is unique moss remover, as it will not turn your moss black. One of the major benefits of Mo Bacter is it destroys moss without leaving any of the unsightly black debris. The dead moss is actually digested by the bacteria (Bacillus sp) which is found naturally in the soil, but when added to fertiliser it consumes dead material like thatch and moss, making it unnecessary for raking or scarification after treatment . . . Leaving your lawn looking healthier. Being organic it is totally safe and is not harmful to you, your children or animals. It will not burn plants in your borders if you should spread it beyond your lawn. It does not stain stonework, patios or paths – a massive bonus!
together, so make sure your living room is very welcoming to family and friends. Get rid of the thick and heavy cushions and replace them with some smaller, lighter ones. Place large plants in the corners of the room and by the window and get some smaller ones to fill the place elsewhere.
is also a good time to change your cushion covers for something lighter, so you can keep the oh-so-cosy and warm coloured ones to wait for next winter and get something light instead. Silk, cotton or lace, sunny yellow, fresh green or sky blue, there’s so much to choose from. In the

Scrutinise the room for objects that appear to be unwelcoming or cold. For example, replace the candle sticks that have a wintry design for something spring-like. Also get rid of all kinds of clutter that you know won’t see the light of day for ages. Remember the sun can make your bedroom look so much brighter and bigger too, so pull up those blinds and let the light in. Now

Following their Irish tour Grace Wilde will tour Germany and Portugal in May followed by visits to Holland, Scandinavia, the UK and North America later in the year. Their debut album will be completed and released in the coming months.

Council Reviews Latest Average House Price Falling In North County Development Plan The County Council held a meeting in the Carnegie Court Hotel Swords which was part of their overall engagement process in the review of the current Development Plan. The meeting was to facilitate the Economic stakeholder from across all sectors in the county to have their say as to how they would wish to see Fingal develop of the coming years. Paul Reid, Chief Executive of the Council welcomed the attendees and spoke of the appropriateness of the review of the plan at this time of new business confidence and strong macroeconomic indicators. The meeting was one of a series across all sectors of the community and it was important to get the views of the business community and their perspective of what was required to assist in the development of the County. He welcomed the diversity of the attendance, which was a good cross section of the business community working in the North County. There was attendance from Start Ups, SMEs and
By Cathal Boland Foreign direct investment businesses. Racheal Kenny of the Planning Department said that all the views and submissions would be summarised by the Chief Executive in his report to the elected members of the Council. Some issues raised at the meeting such as branding, rates and financial incentives were not directly part of the Development Plan, but were important to hear as these would be forwarded to colleagues within the council to address. Racheal went on to give a general overview of the points made, which included comment on infrastructure, movement by rail, metro, cycle which when inadequately provided for lead to car dependency which in turn due to perceived lack of parking within towns tends to divert consumers to larger Shopping Centres and Retail Parks. Vacancy rates within the town centres, is seen as a problem while there also seems to be a lack of available office space in towns. That Development Plan
There is some good news for those seeking to purchase a home here in the North County, with the news that house prices are slowly dropping. The price of an average three bedroom semi detached house in the North County area has declined by 1.97 per cent in the first three months of 2015, with an overall 2.28 per cent increase in prices in the last six months, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance (REA). In Skerries, prices have dropped by €20,000 in three months, with the average semi detached
which clusters business seems to be working well with the application of some flexibility in the application of the defined uses. But, there appears to be concern with retail shopping slipping into Industrial areas. The huge asset of the airport as an employer was recognised but was its potential as a tourist generator tapped into? There was general support for the protection of the Rural Environment and Natural Heritage. Everyone has the opportunity to comment and make their own submission to the Council as to what they see as the issues which they consider need to be addressed in the review of the plan. The process has started with submissions taken till 15th May but the Plan will not be completed till the autumn of 2016 and will then operate from 2017.
home now costing €290,000, with REA agents noting the impact of the Central bank’s new deposit rules and more cautious buyers. While demand is high for properties close to the €220,000 threshold, the Central Bank’s restrictions on deposit requirements have had an immediate effect on the capital’s housing market, with lack of suitable supply another major factor. It now takes ten weeks to sell the average house in the North County a figure that has remained unchanged since September 2014, according to the REA.
REA agents say the Central Bank’s new deposit rules have definitely had an impact in the market, but buyers are also happy to take their time. “The market has softened in the past few weeks with most of enquiries for properties under €20,000 and activity for large properties has become quiet,” said Hugh Cumisky of REA Cumisky, Balbriggan, where prices have increased by €5,000 to an average of €205,000. “There is an acute lack of supply of three-bedroom family homes because it is still not financially viable in many areas for builders to construct homes and make a profit,” added REA Chief Executive Philip Farrell.
