Now Is The Time, Taoiseach GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO DRIVE METRO FORWARD During his hotly contested leadership battle with Minister Simon Coveney, newly elected Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar promised to give the green light to significant new projects. It has been reported that he intends to be true to his promise and to open the nation’s purse strings and to free up cash to “substantially increase capital spending.” With Varadkar as the first Taoiseach to represent a Fingal constituency, there will be high expectations that he will bring forward the disappointingly late construction start date for the longdelayed €2.4billion Metro North project to provide a rail link to Dublin Airport and on to Swords. It is planned to start in 2021 with a completion date of 2027, 10 years away, a time frame that many believe to be far too long and unrealistic, given the speed of change in this region, the fastest growing region in the State. Business people and locals alike believe that everything is now in place at the moment for Metro North to be given topmost priority. Not only is Varadkar a former Minister for Transport, but his choice as Minister for Finance, Paschal

By Patrick Finnegan Donohue also held the Transport portfolio. Consequently, both are intimately familiar with the necessity of Metro North being delivered at the earliest convenience for the economic wellbeing of Fingal, and the country as a whole. Minister Donohue is now Finance Minister, with the nation’s purse firmly within his grasp. He now is the sole decision maker in whether Metro North can be advanced as a matter of priority. Both Varadkar and Donohue are keenly aware of the increasingly vital role that Dublin Airport and the burgeoning town of Swords both play in the economic prosperity of the east Fingal region. Dublin Airport is where the vast majority of visitors and business people arrive in and depart from this country. On top of this, the award winning airport, which now handles almost 30 million passengers per year, is now one of the top tier airports in Europe. The only missing

piece in the jigsaw is the lack of a world class transport system, capable of providing connectivity and ferrying our vital tourists and business people to the city centre. In congratulating the new Taoiseach on his election, Tony Lambert, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber stressed the importance of Metro North to this region. He said, “The Chamber welcomes what will be a transformational new approach to political leadership, in facing the many challenges while seeking out the exciting opportunities that face our great country. As a Minister, Leo Varadkar led a number of strategic initiatives, which have greatly improved tourism, transport, health and sport. The new government’s prioritisation of major infrastructural projects augurs well for the start of the much needed and long delayed Metro North rail link from Dublin City to Dublin Airport and Swords,” he said. “As the accredited Chamber for Fingal, Fingal Dublin Chamber looks forward to working with the Taoiseach and his new team in supporting the economic development of our country and in particular,

the continued growth of the Greater Dublin Region in which this region has a major part to play,” he concluded. The impressive growth of Mr Varadkar’s constituency of Dublin West, deep in Fingal, can be attributed, in the main, to the growth and services provided by Dublin Airport in attracting investment there. Proximity to the airport and connectivity for business people, is always a real incentive for overseas companies to locate in a particular area, and Metro North will tick this box. Added to this is the fact that Swords is now officially the second largest town in Ireland by population. We now get the picture of how much the population landscape will change in 10 years time, the current completion date for Metro, thus emphasising the need for its swift delivery. This would have a hugely beneficial impact on local tourism, with the prospect of people from all over Dublin city accessing Swords easily and enjoying Swords Castle, and on to Newbridge House and Malahide Castle. The new Swords Cultural Quarter would benefit greatly from the influx of tourists. This would provide a gateway

Garristown Bus Connection ‘Not Adequate’ Local Green Party member, Joe O’Brien, along with many other political representatives, have welcomed the introduction of the new bus service that will connect the villages of Garristown, Ballyboughal and Naul with Ashbourne and Balbriggan. However O’Brien, who has pushed hard for a direct Bus Eireann connection between Garristown, Ashbourne and Dublin in recent years has said that the new service falls short of what is needed for the people and commuters of Garristown and Oldtown. Speaking to the County Leader, he said, “There were public meetings and a comprehensive petition put together in recent years by myself and locals of Garristown, which has proven that there is considerable demand for a regular and direct connection between Garristown, Ashbourne and Dublin City. I

By Rachel Wallace submitted all this evidence to the consultation process last year and I know a lot of Garristown residents also made submissions to this process.” He continued, “In addition, Bus Eireann did a test run for the route that would have seen a number of Bus Eireann services run through the village, thus directly connecting it with Ashbourne and Dublin City. Bus Eireann were positively disposed to this, but unfortunately, it has proceeded no further. This is despite the fact that it would have resulted in virtually no additional cost and ultimately would have brought more passengers to Bus Eireann and served the commuters of these areas.” The new bus service will run from Monday to

Saturday serving Ashbourne, Garristown, Oldtown, Ballyboughal, Naul and Balbriggan. The earliest bus on a Monday, at 6.50am from Ballyboughal, will serve as a commuter bus to Balbriggan train station from Ballyboughal, and Naul. But there is no such service at this busy commuter time for Garristown or Oldtown, thus leaving the commuters of these areas high and dry. O’Brien went on to say, “While I can see this service being of significant benefit to some people in the Naul area and to a lesser extent Ballyboughal, for the people of Garristown it simply does not address their long-proven needs. The connection with Ashbourne is welcome, but the earliest connection is 10am which is of minimal use to most commuters. I will be asking Local Link and the NTA to introduce

for tourists to visit Ardgillan and Bremore Castles further north as well. Both politicians know full well that the expeditious delivery of Metro North will have a profoundly beneficial effect on lives of the people who voted for them. In Minister Donohue’s constituency, the residents of Drumcondra and Grangegorman will be thankful to him for Metro North, which will ferry students to Dublin City University (DCU) and onwards to the airport in impressive time. Ease of access for students at DCU is vital for the economic wellbeing of this region and the importance of Metro servicing the university cannot be overstated. It is a well-known custom that incoming Taoisigh place a pre-eminence on high visibility projects in their own constituencies. One only has to admire the speedy delivery of a much improved N5 road to Castlebar, a mere few weeks after Enda Kenny’s elevation to the position of Taoiseach. Let us hope that both Taoiseach Varadkar and Minister Donohue will see the prompt delivery of Metro North, as the most important infrastructural project for the benefit of, not only Fingal, but the whole country.

earlier times for the connection between Garristown and Ashbourne that will be of use to school goers, college students and workers. Unfortunately, I see little benefit to Garristown of a bus connection to Balbriggan that takes an hour with the earliest service arriving at 8.45am.” He concluded by saying, “I would Joe O’Brien urge people from Naul, Ballyboughal and Garristown to engage with Local Link and give them detail about what kind of services they need. I am glad to see any new public transport service coming to rural Fingal, but there is some distance to go if the actual need that is out there is to be addressed. We should really be working harder to make public transport a better option for people.”

lodge attached to the castle at the traffic lights. The County Leader approached the County Council to delve a little deeper into what’s going on. The particular lodge in question, known as Keegan’s Lodge, was formerly occupied by Fredrick Keegan, who was a gardener and grounds keeper and he lived there with his wife and three children. Deputy Arts Officer at the Council, Sarah O’Neill told the County Leader, “There are several lodges dotted around the grounds of Malahide Demesne and they are mostly lying derelict, so the Council is looking into ways to refurbish them. Rather than leaving these lodges to fall into disrepair and open to vandalism, the Council has been working on ideas to make use of

By Leslie Murphy these lodges. The lodge on the Malahide Road is going to be an artist’s studio and will be similar to the project in place at Loughshinny beach where several local artists get turns to use this space for their work.” “Keegan’s Lodge will be a residential studio and a space for artists working across all art forms. A pilot scheme will run first and the hope is that the project will be self funded once established. At the moment it’s being renovated and fitted out and once this is finished, a selection of artists will be put in place in order to fit the criteria. Submissions will then be open to all artists, locally, nationally and internationally.” “Another of the lodges in Malahide

Demesne known as Hogan’s Lodge was renovated and it is being used by the Irish Cycle Centre. This project employs over eight people and is owned by the Council and is self funding its upkeep. Hopefully this will be the same for the project underway at Keegan’s Lodge.”

O’Neill continued, “we are hoping that the premises will be open early in the new year and we aren’t 100 per cent sure exactly what way it’s going to work yet. We will invite artists to submit their ideas to us outlining what they would propose if they had the lodge to reside in for a period of time.”

Malahide Parish Centre and St Sylvester’s Church has been awarded World Winner in Existing and Historic Buildings Category for the most friendly and inclusive space. The architect Sean Harrington, who designed the parish centre was recently invited to enter the centre into the award for the world’s most friendly and inclusive space. The award is a

O’Brien, who is Chairperson of the North Dublin Drug and Alcohol Taskforce said, “We set up a regional community alcohol forum, which is made up of a group of people who are living and working in the area, or who provide services in Balbriggan and who are interested in helping us with the work. We set up a community regional alcohol plan for the whole area of Balbriggan. Because this is about community mobilisation, we also decided that we would develop local community action plans in the three areas of Balbriggan, Skerries and Swords.” “In all of theses areas, we will establish a local alcohol forum and we will begin our work with a Round Table discussion and this is

where we listen. In each area, there will be a Chairperson and in Balbriggan, this is local county councillor, Tony Murphy. Discussion on the day was facilitated by Paula Leonard, National Lead for the Community Action on Alcohol Programme. O’Brien stressed that “this initiative is not ‘anti-drink’ and we recognise that alcohol can be enjoyable part of celebrations, relaxation and positive aspects of life. This work is more focused on reducing some of the negative impacts or harms caused by alcohol.” The regional forum meets on a monthly basis and it is expected that the local ones will initially meet on a slightly more frequent basis, in order to get their local area plan up and running and then there will be task groups dealing with different aspects of the plan.

Historical Events In Skerries Skerries Historical Society have organised several upcoming events. On July 8th from 11am to 5pm at The Old School beside Skerries Community Centre, there will be a series of talks on the revolutionary period both nationally and locally including the death of Muriel MacDonagh off Shenick Island. Local historian MarieBashford Synott will talk about Cumann na mBan organisation in Skerries. The society are hoping to launch the ‘Skerries War of Independence 1919 - 21 Commemorative Committee’ on the day. It currently exists as a working group, and it’s hoped they can elect a proper committee over the period of the events. They have also gotten the services of the Irish Volunteer Dublin Brigade commemorative organisation, who have a travelling exhibition that can also be seen at the Old School, on the day. They are also planning a commemorative parade on the July 9th from 2.30pm, at the Sea Memorial to the South Strand where Muriel lost her life. This will involve members of the MacDonagh family. It is scientifically proven that sleep reduces stress and allows the body to heal, but unfortunately stress can be one of the main factors in lack of sleep or even insomnia in some cases. Being unable to sleep can be one of the most frustrating conditions and people often feel alone and isolated as a result of it. Make sure your bedroom is a place for sleep and not a study or computer or tv room. Keep the room quiet with no ticking clocks or distractions and keep the temperature even and right for you, not too cold and not too hot. If you cannot sleep after one hour, get up and do something around the house until you feel sleepy and try again. As part of sleep preparation the main element is a comfortable bed and mattress. This is a key element to a good night sleep and it may be said that many other therapies and treatments may not work as effectively without the basic instrument of a comfortable bed. Luckily there are many shops that have a great range of beds and mattresses to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. There are many medical causes for insomnia including; chronic pain, sinus allergies, gastrointestinal problems, arthritis, asthma, back pain or neurological conditions. Other causes include depression, anxiety or poor diet and lifestyle choices, such as too much caffeine or alcohol.

Council Honours Parkrun Volunteers The eight Fingal parkruns have been honoured by the County Council for their contribution towards the well-being of the county. other parkruns and told those present that when his term of office finished last Friday, he would be focusing on achieving on some of his parkrun targets. The Mayor added: “This presentation is an opportunity to pay tribute to the volunteers involved with the Fingal parkruns. I have seen at firsthand the excellent work that you do each weekend and I and my colleagues are very aware of the positive effects that parkruns have on the health and wellbeing of our community. “On behalf of Fingal County Council, I want to thank you for your dedication and commitment and I hope that tonight’s ceremony goes some way to showing our appreciation for that voluntary contribution,” added Cllr Butler. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “Young people need role models within the community and that’s what you do every Saturday morning because you are encouraging wellbeing and healthy activities.”

With the bathing season here and the arrival of some fine summer weather recently, the RNLI have issued a warning to people who engage in tombstoning, where people, particularly teenagers jump from a height into the sea. Locals are expressing their concerns in regards to young adults and teenagers jumping from high structures around the sea shore of the North County coastline. Tombstoning is very popular this time of the year and people can get into difficulty very easily. Last year a teenage boy was with a group of friends at High Rock, Malahide. It seemed all was ok when he and some of his friends jumped into the water for some fun and to swim. It seemed that the excited teenagers had misjudged the tide and before he knew it, the teenage boy was in trouble. However, one brave girl in the group helped to bring him to safety and he was unharmed.

Golf is now one of the most popular sports in this country, and for people contemplating taking up this great game, the best advice is to make contact with your local golf professional, before you do anything. All reputable golf clubs will have a resident golf pro, who will provide you with lessons, which are essential for beginners to golf. We regularly see well meaning amateurs giving impromptu lessons to their playing partners, but all that does, is to ingrain bad habits from the get go. Proper lessons from a golf professional is the only way to start on your golfing journey. It is crucial to start off on the right foot, and book a series of lessons with the experts - your local golf professional. Most pro shops are also very well stocked with the finest golf accessories, at very keen prices, with the latest golf clubs for sale, both new and second hand. They also have the

best golf clothing, as well as shoes, umbrellas and rain gear. In many cases, the professional will be only too willing to take your measurements, like height and build, where he can custom fit you with proper clubs to suit your physique. This means that you can fully depend on the clubs that the professional recommends for you. He will also suggest the ones that are the best value, to suit your budget. Another role for the golf pro is in mending broken clubs. They spend a sizeable amount of their time repairing bent or broken shafts, and a good pro will make sure that you can have the loan of an old set of clubs, while your own are being repaired. Luckily, some of the most reputable golf professionals are accessible right here in the North County. A visit here will go a long way to ensuring that you have a hobby, that can be enjoyed for many years to come.

LEO Helps SMEs In Developing Digital Presence A recent survey carried out by Irish Domain Registry (IEDR), showed that Irish consumers spend over €9 billion online. But only 32 per cent of SME websites can take sales orders online. The Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Fingal has secured funding from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to address this imbalance and help smaller businesses to sell more online. A grant of €2,500 is available to small businesses who wish to invest in growing their E-trading capabilities under the voucher scheme. In support of this initiative the Local Enterprise Office Fingal held a “Trading Online Voucher” seminar

Pictured at the Trading Online Voucher seminar organised by LEO Fingal are Gemma Conway (LEO), Dian Kelly (The Chocolate Rose Factory (Rush) and Noel Davidson (Entrepreneur Academy)

in the Riasc Centre, Swords on 12th June to offer advice to local SMEs on how to develop their online and digital presence. The information seminar gave 30 local business owner/managers an insight into how they can use E-Commerce and digital marketing to attract new customers and boost

sales. In addition, the businesses attending the event received information on how to apply for the grant of €2,500 towards their ECommerce and website development costs. Head of Enterprise, Oisín Geoghegan complimented the businesses attending the seminar for taking this step towards improving their online presence. He

Prosper Fingal athletes successfully competed at this year’s Special Olympics Eastern Regional Games. The games took place on the 9th and 11th of June in Morton Stadium, Santry. The talented athletes competed in a number of events throughout the weekend including; 100m, 400m, 1500m, shot putt and the javelin. It was quite a spectacle with 148 athletes competing from 20 Special Olympics Clubs. The athletes will find out soon if they qualified for the 2018 Ireland Games and then potentially compete at the 2019 World Games in Abu Dhabi. urged other local business looking to sell online to follow their example and think strongly about applying for the Trading Online Voucher scheme. “We have seen the impact that improving your online presence can have on sales for small businesses, and the Trading Online Voucher scheme is one way for business to start the process. To date we have approved 166 Online Voucher applications totalling €356,334 and I would like to see this increase further.” While the seminar highlighted the importance of applying for the Trading Online Voucher, it also gave an insight to the different courses and workshops available through the Local Enterprise Office Fingal, such as the six Week QQI Level 5 Certificate in Social Media & Digital Marketing and Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and WordPress one day workshops. Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid said: “We are always striving to make Fingal a better place to do business and through LEO Fingal we actively promote and support a diverse range of enterprises who use both online and traditional sales methods.
