Locals Give Generously of You this Christmas’ card campaign. The Localise students will be hand delivering these cards to their two local hospices, Tara Winthrop and AnovaCare, as well as the local homeless shelter in Swords Village and their local senior citizens. This term, Localise is currently engaging over 562 young people nationwide in community service projects which are supporting homeless facilities, St. Vincent De Paul families, infants and teenagers in need, senior citizens events, special needs and hospital events and teenagers with cancer.

Pictured at the presentation of 100 hampers of food by members of Localise to Denis Barry, President of St Finian's Conference of St Vincent de Paul at Holy Family National School, River Valley, Swords are Elle Rodgers, Denis Barry, Katie O'Brien, Senator James Reilly, Aisling McMahon, Emma Fowler, Niamh Fulton, Sally Duff and Karl Quinn

Localise is a prime example of simple effective local community action that can, and does, make a real difference in the lives of those in need. Through basic grass root service the programme delivers for all involved, allowing young people a firsthand experience of the power of giving back.

Balbriggan Group Gives Hope For Homeless In January 2016 a group of friends from Balbriggan and Stamullen came together to set up a soup run charity to operate every Monday night at the GPO in the city from 8pm until 10pm. The group is called Hope for Homeless and their story is one of real compassion and love.

Lyndsey Trainer from Balbriggan, one of the founders of Hope for Homeless spoke to the County Leader about how the group started. “The group has grown hugely in the past 12 months and we have been working off the generous donations of the locals from Balbriggan and Stamullen

Denis Barry, President of St Finian’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul was delighted with the wonderful efforts of Localise and the pupils of Holy Family School. He told the County Leader, “The local community here in River Valley is alive and well, there’s no doubt about that. When you look around this hall and see the collection of food that has been put together, all for a wonderful cause, it lifts your heart. Without Localise and Holy Family School, none of this would have been possible and we, in St Vincent de Paul would be sorely lacking in food donations. Continued on page 10

and other areas as well. People normally contact the group through their Facebook page.” Lyndsey explained, “It started out with 10 people, which has now grown to over 20, and we all have separate jobs to do within the group. Continued on page 10

With Christmas foremost in our thoughts, the generosity of communities across the North County has been extraordinary. Last week, 35 Localise students from Holy Family Senior National School, River Valley, Swords collected and put together 100 food and gift hampers for those in need in the Swords area. This is part of their 10 week programme which engages them directly in ‘caring in their community’ work. The hampers and essential supplies were handed over to Denis Barry, President of the St Finian’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul at a ceremony on Tuesday, 13th December in Holy Family SNS, where Senator Dr. James Reilly was one of the speakers. The Localise students, with the help of their fellow Holy Family students have also designed and created over 400 Christmas cards in their ‘Thinking

Busiest Christmas Ever At Dublin Airport Dublin Airport will have its busiest Christmas season on record this year, as just under one million people are expected to arrive and depart during festive season. From Friday, 23rd December to Friday, 6th January 2017, an expected 978,000 people will travel through the Dublin Airport. The numbers travelling this year are

up 8 per cent compared to the same period last year. This will be the busiest Christmas in the airport’s 76-year history, according to Dublin Airport spokesperson, Siobhán O’Donnell. “Friday, 22nd December is expected to be the busiest day before Christmas, with almost 83,000 passengers due to arrive and depart

through both terminals, while Friday, 30th December is expected to be the busiest day after Christmas, particularly with passengers heading to winter sun and skiing destinations,” Ms O’Donnell said. “Dublin Airport is a truly magical place at Christmas time with many wonderful, emotional family reunions at arrivals in Terminal 1 and

Terminal 2,” she added. “We’ve had a number of Christmas marriage proposals, and every year we have grandparents seeing their grandchildren in the flesh for the first time – whether that be Irish emigrants returning home or people from overseas visiting their family here. Increasingly, those waiting to meet their loved ones at Dublin Airport are

entering into the spirit of Christmas by dressing up and making signs to welcome family and friends.” Once again, the Dublin Airport campus and terminal buildings have been decorated to give a special atmosphere to the airport over this festive season. The terminals are decked with 100,000 led lights, which use significantly less electricity than

traditional lighting, more than 100 Christmas trees, 500 snowflakes/stars and 20 festive displays. Dublin Airport has also booked more than 30 musical groups from local schools and choirs to perform in both terminals in the days leading up to Christmas, bringing a true Céad Míle Fáilte to the many people coming home for the Christmas Holidays and to those visiting Ireland from overseas for the holiday season.

Destruction Of Airport Pension Scheme Reprehensible Local TD, Darragh O’Brien (FF) has angrily accused the Government of once again letting down the 15,000 Dublin airport pension scheme members. Speaking in the Dáil on the issue last week, O’Brien said, “As a result of the Social Welfare and Pensions Act 2013 and the State Airports (Shannon Group) Act 2014, the airport pension scheme, the Irish airlines superannuation scheme, retired members lost six weeks of their pension and long-serving deferred members lost up to 60 per cent of their entitlements.” “Every major employer in this country with a sizeable pension scheme, particularly those with defined benefit schemes, have been facilitated by Government

HSE Recruitment Campaign An Abject Failure Local TD and Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, Louise O’Reilly had criticised the HSE recruitment campaign to attract healthcare professionals back to this country. Responding to reports that a HSE recruitment campaign, aimed at attracting hundreds of Irish nurses from abroad, recruited only 88 full-time nurses, with 44 believed to

have already left. O’Reilly said, “These revelations from the INMO, following on from a Freedom of Information Request, shows that the HSE recruitment campaign has been an abject failure and highlights serious problems entrenched in the Irish health system. Call For Halt To Lidl Site In Portmarnock Local councillor, Brian McDonagh (Lab) has called for a complete halt to work on the Lidl site in Portmarnock until safety, environmental and legal concerns can be addressed. The call comes following an incident where a digger exposed and damaged a cable leading to a power cut in Portmarnock. McDonagh said, “We had a very serious incident here last week, where a cable was dug up on an unsecured site, despite locals being told that no construction work would take place until after Christmas. The entire area was without power and a trench with a breached ESB cable left open for some time. As a result, residents’ confidence in Lidl and the contractor’s ability to guarantee safety during this development has been completely undermined. In view of this, I am asking Lidl to halt all work until after Christmas,” said McDonagh. He continued, “There are also a number of other legal, environmental, and safety concerns which I think need to be addressed by Lidl. I have concerns based on informed opinion that a proposed drainage solution is inadequate for the site and the lack of an oil filter and proposed solution could lead to a breach of the EU environmental Habitat Directive, by allowing toxic materials run off into the Baldoyle Estuary which is a protected habitat.” “I am also informed by residents that there are

conflicting title deeds and a right of way that has not been dealt with which calls into question the accuracy of the original planning application.” “I know that Lidl have stated that they wish to be good neighbours, I think they should start by postponing the development, justifiable on safety grounds alone, pending a complete review of the project. It would also allow time to address potential long term legal and environmental issues,” concluded McDonagh.

End Of Another Year There was muttering across all sectors of the EU establishment in the past week, as to how the negotiations with the UK will operate. Martin Schulz, the retiring President of the EU Parliament has said, “We cannot allow the Brexit process to become an emotional affair.” But it seems that tempers were raised between the Parliament and the Commission as to what, if any role the Parliament would be allowed to play, other than that of formal ratification of the final exit

package. Schulz was having none of it insisting that MEPs must be consulted and have a participatory role as Brexit proceeds. He went as far as to threaten t h a t Parliament might at the end of the day refuse to ratify whatever agreement was reached. Should that happen, the hardest of all Brexit options would come into play. That is the UK is gone and there is no agreement and no

charted way for discussions to proceed. This would be worst possible option. It now seems as if some compromise on both sides has occurred. Guy Verhofstadt, whom the Parliament appointed as their lead in any discussion, will now be invited to attend preparatory meetings for the General Affairs Council and Summit meetings. But some in Parliament will not be happy with this as

By Cathal Boland they watch Donal Tusk attend every meeting held by Commissioner Michael Barnier and the UK negotiators. The treatment of the MEPs is a little better than during TTIP preparations and negotiations when MEPs effectively were excluded.

Verhofstadt may be about to emerge as a compromise candidate to replace Schulz. The two main grouping may not be able to agree on a successor now that Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness has failed to secure the nomination of the EPP group for this prestigious job. In turn, Schultz may also be taking a long view all the way to 2019 and the “election” of the next President of the Commission. It seems reasonable that Junker will go the same way as Hollande the French President. New PMs have come to power in both France and Italy. Both of them

now govern without a mandate from the people. This is now becoming a trend across Europe. Both of these men are seen as caretakers pending elections next year. The last French Prime Minister took to the election hustings as soon as Hollande announced his retirement at the end of his term, bowing to the

reality of his position. While in Italy, Paolo Gentiloni the Foreign Minister has assumed office as PM following Matteo Renzi stepping down following his humiliating defeat in the constitutional referendum. The problems faced by Gentiloni are many and complex as he now tries to steady the ship before seeking a

mandate of his own. France, in preparation for both Presidential and Parliamentary elections has extended the period of the State of Emergency declared after the Paris attacks in November 2015. The total distance is 40,000 kilometres and the whole journey will take nine months. “My wife and son, Fionn will accompany me on my journey and there will also be support people along the way. I am fundraising for Trocaire and I aim to be the oldest person at 55 years old to complete this task,” said Dermot. Dermot continued, “Completing the Round the World Cycle will be my life’s ambition realised. Having the opportunity to promote the global goals and to support Trocaire is the icing on the cake. By Christmas next year, with a bit of luck and a good team behind me, I’ll be half way around the world.” Éamonn Meehan, Executive Director of Trócaire said: “All at Trócaire wish Dermot every success in his world record attempt to cycle around the world. Community fundraising such as ‘gogodermo’ will support our vital programmes in over 20 countries throughout the developing world.”

Balbriggan Group Gives Hope For Homeless Continued from page 1 On top of this, we have people who make hot pots, sandwiches and crisps. Tables are set up the same way, with hot drinks, and if we get cold drinks, we really appreciate them,” she said. Lyndsey said, “The demand for our services has grown lately due to the colder weather and it’s not just homeless people that we provide

for, it’s people in emergency accommodation as well. We serve hot cooked meals for up to 300 people and this can include families, as well as take away dishes, depending on supply and demand. Our policy is to serve everybody who comes up to our table,” said Lindsey. Indeed the group held a Christmas party for the homeless on Monday last, 19th December.”

“You will never know if a person is homeless by just looking at them. There are people who may have a roof over their heads, but can’t afford to eat. At the moment, we are trying to get charity status, but there is so much paperwork to get through.” “We have had unbelievable support from people who really want to help us, which is

badly needed because most of us have Monday to Friday jobs and we need extra bodies, particularly people to drive to the city with the food. Hope for Homeless do not go to people’s homes, but we stand at the GPO and set up tables there. Our drivers collect the hot food, which is supplied by donations from all over North County Dublin, like

Country Crest who have been very generous to us, as well as businesses in the city, which also help with food. We have also been lucky with money donations from Church collections, to GAA club draws,” said Lyndsey. There are about three other soup runs that operate in the inner city and we try to limit our food to plain cooking, which always goes

down well with everyone. We also make up packages of clothing, which help along the way.” “We have a core number of people, but , with the number of people making sandwiches and cooking

other food, the figure is closer to 50. The group will be in town on St Stephen’s Day and all Mondays, including Bank Holidays to ensure that homeless people are being catered for with a special kind of love. The communities of Balbriggan and Stamullen have been

absolutely fantastic and people often donate to local butchers, who then provide us with food. We are overwhelmed by the support and goodwill of the local community and we are very grateful to everyone for their kindness and generosity to people who really need it,”

He told the County Leader, “It gets better every year and Christmas is a time of happiness and joy. For some families it is tough, especially those

The children here have shown fantastic spirit and as I said to the children, people work to earn a livelihood, but we give to live and there’s no doubt that the generosity and commitment of pupils and teachers, supported by Localise, has resulted in a fabulous testament to community spirit, which will last them a lifetime,” he said.

Still No Planning Permission For Swords Nursing Home CG Hotels Group, which owns the Radisson Blu Hotel at Dublin Airport has been given the goahead for two expansion projects at Dublin Airport. This development has angered Mary McCormack, CEO of Tara Winthrop Private Clinic, who has been trying in vain for a long time to get planning permission for an extension to the wellknown nursing home, but Dublin Airport Authority (daa) has blocked their application. According to Mary, daa’s decision to block her application is based on the fact that the nursing home is within

the airport’s noise zone. CG Hotels Group have just received permission for a six-storey extension, with 144 bedrooms to be located in the car park area of the Radisson Blu Hotel. It has also gotten permission from Fingal County Council to build a new hotel right beside the Radisson Blu at Dublin Airport. This will bring to three, the number of hotels at the airport. This will amount to an extra 500 bedrooms, a significant expansion of the number of rooms available on the airport campus.

Pictured is CEO of Tara Winthrop Private Clinic in Swords, Mary McCormack.

The County Leader spoke to Mary McCormack, CEO of Tara Winthrop Private Clinic, who explained the dilemma they find them-

selves in. She explained, “We applied to Fingal County Council for a 20 bed extension, including 10 beds for challenging behaviours and 10 for hospice care. The County Council was very amenable to that, but they stipulated that if Dublin Airport Authority (daa) said no, then they would not be in a position to grant planning permission. The daa never came back with a reply, they just left it in abeyance, so we had no option but to put it on hold,” she said. When asked about the fact that planning

permission has been granted for two expansion projects at the airport, Mary said, “It’s all about who you know, not what you know. People make decisions and just change them, as they like. Nothing is happening until daa decide that we are not a threat and are not in the noise zone. The fact that the new projects are clearly in the noise zone, and have been given the go ahead is a complete mystery to me. It all seems very confusing, but the Council has to go with what daa decide. It has cost us a lot of money to date, and if we don’t get the permission, we will be at a further monetary loss, so we’ve decided to stall it.”

Prestigious Award For Marqette Marqette has won the “Airport Hospitality Provider of the Year Award” at the prestigious Aviation Awards on 7th December at the Clayton Hotel Burlington Road, Dublin. The Aviation Industry Awards continue to be the benchmark for excellence for those demonstrating best practice and innovation in the aviation sector in Ireland. Marqette’s high level of customer service and food excellence have won it rave reviews within its own and other industries and they recently also scooped “Best Food and Beverage Concessionaire” at the ARI Dublin Airport Awards which adds to its growing list of accolades. The food court located in Terminal One, Dublin Airport has previously come “Highly Commended” as Food Court of the Year at the International FAB Awards in Geneva, when the company was only nine months in operation. In November, Marqette was the recipient of the “Best Start Up/New Business Award” at the Fingal Dublin Chamber Awards.

“We badly need this extension to go ahead, because many of the people we deal with are very complex, acute care patients and we are the only nursing

home in the area looking after people with such conditions, and we also do hospice care. “I’m appealing to daa to reconsider their posi-

13

tion, particularly as our extension is only two storeys high, as opposed to the six storey project at the airport,” concluded Mary.

Lufthansa To Double Services To Munich Dublin Airport has welcomed the announcement from Lufthansa that it is to almost double services on its DublinMunich route next summer. The airline, which currently operates a year-round daily service to Munich, will fly 13 times per week from the end of March, 2017. Welcoming the announcement, Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison said, “Lufthansa is one of our longest serving customers at Dublin Airport and it is particularly pleasing to see the airline almost doubling services on its Munich route next year. This route has gone from strength to strength, with the airline increasing its frequency between Dublin and Munich every year since 2011. This increase, which is testament to the popularity of Munich as both a business and leisure destination further

strengthens the connection between Ireland and Germany.” Announcing the expansion of the service Andreas Köster, Senior Director, Sales UK, Ireland & Iceland for the Lufthansa Group said: “This further increase in our flights between Dublin and Munich shows the importance of the Irish market within the Lufthansa worldwide network. Having started as a seasonal summer only service with three flights a week in 2008, we have continued to significantly expand the service to meet the demands of our Irish customers. “As well as providing more frequent access to southern Germany through the Bavarian capital, the twice-daily service will further enhance the travel options of our Irish customers by increasing the potential for onward travel to many of Lufthansa’s worldwide destinations.”

Guide to Travelling on a Budget They say that travel is the only thing that you pay for that makes you richer. Traveling broadens your horizons and allows you to experience the history and traditions of other cultures and to create memories that last a lifetime. “How can you put a price on that?” one might ask. Well the truth of the matter is that By Darren O’Reilly travel and associated matters can be really expensive. But like everything, there are ways to be savvy with how you travel which can help cut down on costs. Check out these tips on how you can travel cheap while getting that rich experience.

BE FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR DATES

STAY AND PLAY WITH AIRBNB

Instead of sticking with a set of fixed dates, look at the prices of airfares to your chosen destination over the course of a month to see when the cheapest time to fly is. Google have a handy search tool that allow you to visualise price fluctuations over any time period.

Airbnb apartments and houses fall into that budget accommodation sweet spot. Less expensive than a hotel yet more comfortable and private than a hostel. Using Airbnb, you can find hosts with extra rooms or entire homes! You can filter your search based on any budget and they have secure listings across 190 countries.

USE SKYSCANNER Skyscanner is a really handy service that searches across dozens of airline providers to bring you the best deals. Available on desktop and on mobile, you can easily search and compare flights to any airport in the world. When you use Skyscanner, it’s advisable to be flexible with your dates and destinations. A cool feature about the service is that you can set up flight alerts so you’ll always be in the know for cheap deals.

AVOID UNNECESSARY UPGRADES Avoid the unnecessary expenses of checking in baggage, priority boarding and choosing your seat ahead of time, as these are all little extra expenses that can be opted out of and in the long run will save you a lot of money. At the end of the day, it only makes travelling marginally more comfortable and you would be way better allocating your holiday budget elsewhere.

Coveney feels it is important to meet with Fine Gael councillors, particularly with a possible Fine Gael leadership contest on the horizon...but this came a the expense of dedicated Fingal councillors who wished to question the Minister. Despite the Mayor doing an admirable job of trying to get as many questions as possible to the Minister, I and other councillors did not get a chance to have our questions heard,” said a frustrated Smith. To add further annoyance, Fine Gael councillor, Tom O’Leary decided the short time we had as a Council was the appropriate time to put on record his fond memories of

RESEARCH AND PLAN Putting together an itinerary or a daily/weekly plan of your trip will allow you to allocate your budget effectively based on the activities that you want to do and keep tabs on what you are spending.

FIND OUT WHERE THE LOCALS EAT One of the biggest holiday expenses is food. Tourist and backpacker destinations are notoriously expensive so ask around and find out where the locals eat. This may be outside the main commercial areas or strip but you are sure to have a more authentic experience and to find some hidden gems.

Further Education Facility Needed For North County

Local councillors, Justin Sinnott (NP) and Duncan Smith (Lab) have raised the need for a further education facility in North County Dublin. Data released last week has outlined the college destinations of the 2016 Leaving Cert cohort. North County Dublin again fared very well, with access to higher education in some schools as high as 87 per cent. However the data has again reinforced the acute need for further education and training for North County Dublin. While schools are reporting a majority of pupils accessing higher education for a significant number, higher education is not a route they are choosing. The lack of alternative further education and training provision in North County Dublin is reducing choices and limiting options for school leavers. When it comes to further education provision, the North County remains at the bottom of the list, with no further education choice from Whitehall in Dublin 9 to Drogheda.

Rush Students Visit Baldoyle Training Centre To celebrate College Awareness Week 2016, Baldoyle Training Centre welcomed students from local secondary schools to an Apprenticeship Open Day. Students from local schools, including St Joseph’s in Rush, visited the training centre to learn more about real life learning that is Apprenticeship. Students attended an apprenticeship information session, had a tour of the training centre and got to experience skills demonstrations from current apprentices who were on hand to speak with students and to answer questions. Patricia Cassells, Manager, Baldoyle Training Centre said, “We were delighted to welcome local students to the training centre
