This will apply for the three Saturdays in December in the run up to Christmas. The towns in question are Balbriggan, Malahide, Rush, Skerries and Swords and the Saturdays for free parking are, 5th, 12th and 19th December. At a recent Local Area Meeting of the County Council, Cllr Darragh Butler (FF) asked about the possibility of the Council car park at the junction of North Street and Seatown Road in Swords, being made available for car parking. Keep It Local This Christmas It’s Christmas time once again, and here in Fingal, local businesses are gearing up to prepare for what they hope will be their busiest time of year. This last quarter of the year is a crucial time for our local businesses and retailers, who have come to need a real boost in trade over the coming weeks, so it is vital that customers around the locality give them all the support they can. There is no better way to start your Christmas shopping than in your home town, where there are many fantastic local stores, restaurants and hotels which have been situated here for many years. This is also where you can negotiate a bargain, and should you need to exchange a purchase, or if you run into any issues, you will be received by a friendly shopkeeper, who will be only too willing to make sure that your every need is swiftly met. The County Leader got in touch with a number of local businesses and retailers, all of whom emphasised the real importance of shopping local at this festive time of year. They were all unanimous in saying how local shopping would be of great benefit to both business and customer alike. Richie McNamara, owner of Richie’s Bikes Store in Swords said, “I

By Patrick Finnegan think it’s this that really keeps the smaller businesses alive. We depend on our local customers, so we would try and ensure that we always offer them that little bit extra so that they get the best of both - a great price and that extra service.” Niall Savage of JCs Supermarket in Swords said, “We think it is very important to shop local this Christmas, as it goes a long way to protecting our 150 jobs here at JCs. It also protects our suppliers who provide us with much of our products at this time of the year. Local producers are a very important part of our business and we feel that by us purchasing locally, it helps families in the North County,” he said. Tunde Adejumo of McCartan’s Pharmacy in Balbriggan says; “ It’s always important to

shop locally. It keeps the money going into local shops and means that people can help create local jobs too. That is very important especially at Christmas time. It is also more convenient, as we have everything you might need here in Balbriggan, so you don’t need to go into Dublin city spending money on transport into the city, meaning you have more money to spend on your Christmas shopping.” Adrian Kavanagh, Manager of Gerry’s Supermarket in Skerries said, “We employ 71 people here, all from the local area. We buy all our products from local suppliers, so buying local help helps everyone in the locality. There are excellent shops here in Skerries, where you can find all you need without having to travel anywhere else. Shopping local secures jobs and provides value for money,” he said. Noel Heeney of McFadden’s in Balbriggan also said they placed great emphasis on creating that unique personal experience for their customers. “It’s so

important that we keep the climate of local business alive,” he said. “We try and go the extra mile at this time of year, and for example, we’ll take deposits. It is the little things like that that make a difference to people.” Fingal can boast three fine shopping centres, namely the Pavilions in Swords, Millfield in

Balbriggan and Blanchardstown Centre, where you will find everything you need for the festive season, with a wonderful range of fine products at great prices. It’s all here for you right on your doorstep. Tony Lambert, CEO, Fingal Dublin Chamber said, ”Fingal Dublin Chamber fully supports shopping locally and

asks everyone to think local before they spend, and to consider the benefits of the many jobs which are provided in local shops throughout the region. The local economy is very important to the future of the area and shopping locally will guarantee local jobs and support local services throughout all the towns of Fingal.”

Pride Of Place Award For Ballyboughal Ballyboughal took a top prize in the annual IPB Co-operation Ireland Pride of Place Awards, which were announced last week at a glittering gala event in Ennis, Co. Clare. More than 800 people from across the island filled the venue to hear the winners announced by RTE’s Ciana Campbell. Ballyboughal took runner up place in the main competition in the category for neighbourhoods with populations of between 300 and 1000 people. The Pride of Place Awards are an all-island event, which recognise and celebrate the achievements of people who work tirelessly to create pride in their local area and a better place for local residents. Forty-three groups, ranging from those in small rural communities to groups in inner-city housing estates, took winning or runner up positions in the main and cities competitions. A further six groups received Special Awards, while one local authority received a special

Council Award. Each year, practically every local authority on the island of Ireland nominate groups for doing exceptional work in their communities. This year, 102 groups were nominated by their respective local authority. A panel of highly experienced judges visited every nominated group and then selected the winners and runners up. Since the first Pride of Place competition 13 years ago, thousands of people have been recognised for the outstanding contribution they make to Irish society. Tom Dowling, founder of the event and Chair of the Pride of Place Committee said: ”Even after 13 years, I and the rest of the judges continue to be amazed at how communities from all over the island demonstrate their amazing capacity to care for the people in their communities and respect their heritage, culture and environment.”

Proceeds go to the needy in the Rush area.” “This year in Swords, the collection points will be in JCs Supermarket on Thursday, 3rd to Saturday, 5th December, and in the Pavilions at SuperValu and Dunnes Stores from Thursday, 11th to Saturday, 13th December. In the past years, the generosity of the local community to this very worthy cause has been outstanding. Mark Rentzke, is appealing to shoppers to give as generously as possible. Your little bit of help will go a long way towards making Christmas a happier occasion for the more needy in our community.

France Matters To Us All The events in Paris again highlight the importance of European countries acting collectively. This does not mean that they must take collective military action. But surely it does require them to share their intelligence however gathered. Earlier this year, following the previous attack in France, Dublin MEP Brian Hayes called for the sharing of data on both air and rail passenger movements within Europe. Such a call is reasonable. At times of terrorist attacks our immediate reaction is to focus on the migrant, but these attacks were managed by our fellow citizens. Governments must come to grips with the causes within society which foster such militant dissatisfaction and address them. France, which has suffered the attacks, is peeved that vital intelligence information was only passed to it some three days after the attack, then not

By Cathal Boland by a neighbour but by a nonEuropean country. Currently it seems there is little intelligence sharing across Europe and it is not one of the competencies of the EU. From the reports to hand it is clear that the lack of cooperation by security force across the continent contributed to the success of the attackers. This demands that directions must be given at European political level to ensure a coordinated approach is taken in the future. Already there are moves to make amendments to the Schengen structure. This agreement between 26 European states allowks for free movement without passport controls. The reports suggest that the push is on for

‘Perfekt Crime’ At Millbank Rush Dramatic Society are presenting David Tristram’s hilarious comedy “Inspector Drake & The Perfekt Crime” at the Millbank Theatre which started on 18th November last. The performance runs for the next three weeks, Wednesday to Saturday, nightly from 8.30pm. When a genius commits a

murder, the plan is perfect. But is it fool proof? Inspector Drake is back to face his greatest-ever challenge. Who is the mysterious Doctor Short, and why did he marry a warthog? Has he murdered his fourth wife – or did she murder him first? These are just some of the questions facing the indomitable Inspector Drake

Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Germany to establish an inner mini Schengen control area. This has far reaching potential consequences for the vision of the EU, should it be allowed to occur. Currently it seems that Germany is very reluctant to agree to such a move. Both Ireland and the UK are not members of Schengen. It was not just France that was attacked. Each one of us will now suffer consequences of the action. There will be increased security put in place which will have a negative impact on our travel arrangements and our enjoyment of the cities that we visit. Enhanced security on the streets contributes only marginally to our security, the real impact is the intelligence which is gathered, shared and correctly interpreted. It is not enough to be appalled, outraged and angry or to stand in solidarity at moments such as this. We, the people of Europe, must demand better from our elected leaders. as he pits his wits against Doctor Short in this hilarious adventure. A great night of comedy not to be missed and just what’s needed to lift the spirits and banish the winter blues. The production is directed by Bernard Tonge, with a top line Millbank cast of Donal Hurley, Oisín Molloy, Brian Hosford, Julie Blunden – Conlon and Sandra Gildea. Swords Castle In The Movies Swords Castle stepped back in time recently, having been transformed into a fictional 11th century medieval castle courtyard village. Dublin based production company, Pull the Trigger, took over the castle to shoot The Legend of Cambria. The fantasy film, which can be best described as a mixture of Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Willow is set in a magical mythical kingdom, with Swords Castle setting the backdrop for the ensuing adventures of swashbuckling heroes and villains, dragons and treachery. Commenting on the selection of Swords Castle as one of the key locations for The Legend of Cambria, location manager, Dermot Cleary said that Swords was an obvious choice,

“Swords Castle’s unique stage in the development of proposition as an enclosed Swords Castle as a valuable readymade film set offering a resource on our doorstep, genuine medieval setting made providing a real experience to it a hugely attractive location. filmmakers and tourists alike. Nina. While the reader is kept in the dark at the beginning of the book, the author By Olivia Leth reveals more and more about the main characters’ backgrounds and histories by letting them tell their own stories. The author has worked as a journalist for over 20 years and has lived in Madrid, Paris, the Ivory Coast, Senegal and Kenya. Whilst in Nairobi, she was working as a freelancer for the Guardian, travelling to Somalia to cover the African Union’s battle against AlSabaab. Considering her own experience in Africa, the book

gains some crucial authenticity that leaves you with no other choice than to jump right into the story and being held captive yourself by this fastpaced political thriller. The book’s structure consists of the three main characters that take turns in sharing their stories and illuminate the whole journey piece by piece. With exquisite finesse, the author turns each character from being a stranger to the reader, to being a character with depth, history and complex life circumstances. The writing style is neither too demanding nor too easy and creates a very realistic atmosphere that makes it easier for the reader to experience and understand the whole complexity of the story. Although at some points, there is too little background information for the average reader provided in the book, it is an enjoyable novel that will keep you up all day and night.

provision system, the charity has raised some concerns. For many years the ISPCC has called for legislation to address the protection of vulnerable people who have entered Ireland, seeking asylum, many of whom are children. Although the charity has delightedly welcomed the inclusion of the best interests of the child as a primary consideration in areas such as age determination, they

stated that this does not go far enough to put children at the centre of decision making. Commenting on the Bill, Chief Executive Grainia Long said “For too long, children and families have been subject to lengthy processes which have seen some children and families living in direct provision centres for 10 years which is detrimental to family life and quite clearly not in the best interests of the child.”

Fractured - A Review “My name is Peter Maguire. That much I know. I don’t know what day it is. Or where this room is. Or what time it is.” A great start to the thrilling novel ‘Fractured’ from Clar Ni Chonghaile, an Irish writer and journalist. The novel, which will be published in early 2016, tells the story of a journalist who is being held hostage in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu whilst being occupationally sent there. During his imprisonment he meets Abdi, a Somali teenager working with Peter’s captors, who enlightens his dark days with his visits. Along with the two men’s journey, the book is written from a third perspective, the perspective of Peter’s mother

Back To School For Temple Street The two-week fundraising campaign led by the 6th year LCVP class at the Fingal Community College as part of their Enterprise Action Plan has recently come to a very successful end. The campaign, aimed to raise money and awareness for Temple Street Children’s Hospital, has raised a total

By Olivia Leth of €840. As a result of achieving a minimum fund of €500, the teachers agreed to wear school uniforms for a day. The event was greatly enjoyed by both students and teachers whose encouragement for a good cause is

truly inspiring. Commenting on the event, teacher at the Fingal Community College Aisling O’Keeffe said: “The event created a purely positive atmosphere that was enjoyable for students, teachers and parents. Most of the students didn’t recognise us dressed in the school uniforms and we’ve been truly overwhelmed by the generosity of the students that donated for Temple Street.”

He went on to say that, “Job creation is the key to addressing many of the shortcomings in the area. Balbriggan and North Fingal suffers from excessively high levels of unemployment, questionable housing developments and social housing allocations and dilapidated town centres, said Cllr Murphy. More employment, better housing, and better town centres is what Murphy has committed himself to achieving when elected to the next Dáil. Murphy, since his election to Fingal County Council last year, has been instrumental in securing funding for sports and services, addressing inadequacies in housing, resolving constituents’ problems at both local and central government levels. He thanked his supporters for their tremendous show of confidence in him as a candidate in the upcoming general election and promised to ensure that, when elected he would make Balbriggan and Fingal North the place to work, live and do business.

Kindling Sticks only Pictured is the Dutch factory trawler, Afrika, which was observed fishing close to Dunmore East in the Celtic Sea.

North County Fishermen Lose Out The sea fishing industry has a long tradition within communities in the North County, particularly those in Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush and Howth. However, this is now a local industry that is dying on its feet. The local economy in these areas had a boom time in the 70s and early 80s, particularly in the run up to Christmas, due in the main to the lucrative herring fishing industry in the Celtic Sea, off the south east coast. Monies earned by local crews were by and large spent locally in their North County towns, thus providing local employment.

By Gerry Fitzmaurice and Patrick Finnegan This bonanza came to a halt in the past years, due to quotas being imposed and the scientific warnings that fish stocks needed to be preserved in the Celtic Sea. However, this situation does not seem to have deterred a 126 metre, 7,000 ton Dutch factory trawler, called the ‘Afrika’ from fishing in the Celtic Sea, just off Dunmore East, filling up with valuable stock of herring before heading back home to the Netherlands. Also seen in the region was a similar sized Spanish factory trawler and an Icelandic super trawler called ‘Jupiter’. This action is set to frustrate and anger many North County skippers and crews, who have been denied access to these rich fishing waters. This has the roll on effect of denying local traders the spending power of well paid and cash rich local fishing crews. It is speculated that two or three high powered factory ships working in the spawning grounds of the Celtic Sea would do more damage to the herring stocks that the relatively low powered and much smaller trawlers from the East coast of Ireland combined. The ‘Afrika’ and the other factory trawler appear to have taken advantage of the recent storm, Barney to continue fishing without fear of sanction. What is particularly galling to many fishermen from the North County ports, is that huge foreign trawlers can fish in the herring rich waters of the Celtic Sea, while their boats are tied up as they obey the sanction of strict quotas in an effort to preserve stock. The irony of the situation is that when the Celtic Sea was open to Irish fishermen, the main buyers of the herring were Dutch. Having bought the catches from the Irish skippers, many of the trawlers would land their catches directly into their factory ships that were moored in Dunmore East. Now it seems that those factory ships are catching the fish directly with no benefit to the Irish economy. The County Leader spoke to Skerries fisherman, Noel Wilde, who is very familiar with the fishing scene in the Celtic Sea and, in particular, Dunmore East, where he fished for many years. He said, “Unfortunately there is no longer good fishing in the Irish Sea. There are no boats in the Irish Sea operating from Skerries or Howth fishing for herrings. They are confined to fishing for white fish and prawns,” he said. Wilde spoke about the time when fishing was a really lucrative occupation. “We used to do well in the 70s and 80s around Dunmore East, the south east coast and Cork. We also went as far as the mouth of the Shannon, past Galway and up to Achill.” “West coast boats are fishing for mackerel from as far north as Shetland, down the west coast of Ireland and around to Cornwall. These are all big steel boats, up to 70 metres in length he said. The County Leader contacted the Department of the Marine, but they were unavailable to make a comment.

take a moment and think of winterising both our houses and gardens. In the process of winterising your home, you should be careful of the mould. It can worsen allergies and trigger asthma attacks among other diseases. As mould needs water to flourish, it is important to get the right airbalance in your home. There should neither be any drafts or leaking windows and doors, nor should the air be too dry. In order to achieve the right level of humidity, turn down your thermostat and set it to a level adequate to keep the inside temperature above freezing and keep your walls and furniture dry. Install an humidity indicator to maintain a reasonably dry interior. People with a fireplace

installed in their homes are lucky, as they can save some energy this winter. As electricity bills are usually higher during winter than during the rest of the year, it comes in handy to reduce your heating costs a little bit. In order to get your fireplace up and running, it is important to get your chimney checked. Make sure it is clean and no birds have made themselves at home there. Hire a chimney sweep to inspect your chimney and to get it clean. Many businesses across the locality provide services that will assist you with that. Change your light summer blankets for thicker ones. This guarantees that you won’t be freezing while cosying up on the couch or during the night in your bed. This

way, you can save energy by turning down the heating at night. Change over to some warmer bed linen that are made out of heavier and thicker materials such as flannel. This will definitely keep you warm without having the heating turned on all night long. If you suffer from cold feet on a chronic basis, cover your floors with some thick and cosy carpets. Those will both keep the warmth in your room and prevent you from stepping out of your bed right onto the cold floor. While it seems that gardening is an issue that starts in the spring and ends with summer, work needs to be done all year long. When temperatures drop, and fallen leaves your garden messy, putting the garden to bed is mostly a matter of cleaning up. Clear out the stems of annual flowers and vegetables to prevent the possibility of them harbouring insect eggs or diseases over the winter. To get your roses ready for winter to ensure that they will bloom in their usual glory next spring, it is important to follow the next steps. As tree roses are very vulnerable to cold, they need a little help to survive the cold temperatures. Get started by setting four stakes in the ground around the stem and wrap protective barrier of burlap around the stakes. Fill in an isolating layer of shredded leaves to shield the roses from cold winter winds. That way you can kill two birds with one stone as you can recycle the leaves that came down during Autumn. You can purchase all gardening features that you need in local gardening stores across the North County. Make sure that you give your trees and shrubs the right treatment. It is important to properly water them before the ground freezes. Fertilise young trees and shrubs as their roots may not have been established yet.

circulate as oxygen fuels the decomposition process. Spread the leaf fertiliser on top of bare soil. It will help the soil maintain moisture by absorbing rain and helps to keep the soil warm in winter and cool in summer, so renew the mulch layer whenever it gets too thin. The North County provides many shops and services that will help you to get your homes and gardens ready for the cold season. Make it a season that everyone can enjoy and after you are done with your house and garden you can go back to enjoy those festive Christmas days in the North County.

there is an immediate response to families who find themselves without anywhere to sleep at night. Speaking on behalf of Focus Ireland, Director of Advocacy Mike Allen said: “We need a more urgent response from the whole of Government to stem the rising flow of 70 to 80 families becoming homeless every month and also action to fasttrack delivery of housing for people who are homeless or at risk.” He further stated that Minister Kelly has made his commitment clear to building social housing and has named

the lack of capacity of local authorities and Approve Housing Bodies to get the work started after many years of cutting back on key staff as the main barriers he faces. Mr. Allen continued that the National Asset of Management and Agency (NAMA) has got the capacity to build housing but is being allowed to choose to build homes for the private market. NAMA resources are to be used to deliver 2000 homes of which only 10 per cent will be social homes. “The key to tackling the current homeless crisis is the delivery of homes and yet the Government seems to be putting most of its focus on the delivery of homes for the private market which seems bizarre,” he concluded.

Following World Diabetes Day, Dublin City University (DCU), which is the first university choice for many people in the North County, is taking part in an EU funded research programme aimed at early diagnosis of diabetes. Dr. Donal O’Gorman, exercise physiologist at DCU and leader of Ireland’s Diabetes Consortium is involved in the project which looks at the progression from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes by tracking volunteers’ physiological improvements. The research shows that one of the problems identified is that people destined to develop type two diabetes spend many years in a state of ‘prediabetes’ with abnormal blood sugar

levels before they are eventually diagnosed with the disease. Regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle can prevent the development of the disease in high-risk individuals. This means that the earlier pre-diabetes can be accurately diagnosed, the better it can be managed and the lower the resulting economic impact of diabetes itself. “The research programme is addressing one of the biggest societal challenges in Europe by helping to prevent high risk individuals from developing to type 2 diabetes,” explained Dr. O’Gorman. “Our consortium, led by the Steno Diabetes Research Centre in Copenhagen, has identified biomarkers that

better track progression toward diabetes and these can now be used in diabetes clinics to assist health care professionals. At DCU we implemented a lifestyle programme to help prevent progression to diabetes and identify

the biomarkers that also track with improvements in health. We found that those on the intervention programme lost body weight and improved glucose tolerance, reducing their risk of developing diabetes,” he

Students Union Confirms Importance Of Sport

Pictured are the U14 Donabate Community College team who have beaten Lusk Community College to become County Champions.

Figures from the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) have shown that being involved in sports at college can greatly improve your academic success, by improving brain function, memory and even employability. Sports at college can improve your future by refining employer-friendly skills like team building, communications, interpersonal skills and goal-setting. The study has further revealed that exercises lead to less drinking and less alcohol-related diseases and endorphins are a great natural way to tackle stress and focus on studies. “There are plenty of good reasons to be physically active at college,” President of the Union of Students in Ireland, Kevin Donoghue explained. “Apart from reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lowering blood pressure and preventing depression by endorphins, exercise changes the brain in ways that protect memory and thinking. Studies suggest that parts of the brain which control memory and thinking have greater volume in people who exercise versus people who don’t,” he added. 26.5 per cent of Irish girls and 16 per cent of Irish boys under the age of 20 are classed as overweight or obese which is above the European average of 24.2 per cent.

Importance Of Staying Healthy This Winter It is very important to stay healthy this winter season. An effective weapon against coughs and colds is a great night’s sleep. This was claimed by the Sleep Council, which has been looking at

research into sleep and the immune system. “Experts agree that those who sleep better have a stronger immune reaction, suggesting that sleep can banish bugs as well as making you feel a lot

healthier,” Lisa Artis of The Sleep Council said. “A night’s sleep around seven to eight hours for most adults seems to guard against common winter illnesses such as

coughs and colds. Scrimping on sleep, which is particularly common among young people, appears to make you more likely to succumb to the sniffles,” she added. With it’s cooler temperatures, Winter brings with it the onset of a major allergy season. Ragweed for instance is a major cause of autumn allergies as it will continue to release pollen. Another offender is mould that grows quickly in damp areas outside and inside the house. And last but not least, dust mites are known to migrate into our houses, making itself at home in all of our most comfortable places like furniture, beds and carpets. According to the Asthma Association of Ireland, the number of people with allergies and intolerances in the locality and beyond is increasing with 470,000 people having asthma making Ireland the fourth highest prevalence of asthma in the world. One in every ten adults and one in every five children suffer from asthma. There are several things you can do to prevent major allergy attacks including cleaning all vents and air filters before turning up the heat, washing your sheets and beddings on a regular or even weekly basis, keeping your shower curtains clean as they are a prime spot for mold to grow and vacuuming as often as possible.

Parents in the North County are being urged to have their child’s car seat checked as research from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) indicates that as many as four out of five child car seats are incorrectly fitted. The RSA ‘Check it Fits’ service has checked over 8,000 child car seats and restraints across Ireland since 2013 . Of these, 82 per cent required some adjustment. Worryingly, 75 per cent of seats required a major adjustment of which 4 per cent have the potential to cause injury or even death in the event of a collision. If your child’s car seat or restraint is incorrectly fitted, Moyagh Murdock, CEO of the RSA explained that it is important for all parents to ensure that when they buy a new car seat, that they get the seat fitted by an expert. “We would also advise that parents check the label on their

car seat to make sure it’s appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height,” Murdock continued. “Almost two out of five children killed are passengers. Garda reports into collisions indicate that one in ten children were not wearing a seat belt or using a child restraint in 2014,” Aisling Leonard, Senior Road Safety Promotion Officer for the RSA stated.
