TWO DEVASTATING BLOWS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION By Patrick Finnegan
Garda Drug Unit Halved Stretched Community Care Services The crisis which is being experienced by North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, based in Swords, has been exacerbated by news that there are now only 16 gardaí attached to the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) North divisional drug units. This represents a 50 per cent reduction on the figure of 32 gardai in 2011. The Dublin Metropolitan Region (North Division) covers the Ballymun, Coolock and Balbriggan Garda Districts. All garda stations in the North County, including Malahide, Lusk and Swords are attached to this division. This news drew an angry response from Chairperson of North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), who told the County Leader, “One of the most important elements in the fight against drugs, is to cut off the supply into our communities. You can’t do that if you’re systematically taking gardaí away from tackling the problem. Under Fine Gael and Labour’s time in Government, there has been a consistent pattern of cuts to frontline services. Community policing and tackling drug crime have simply not been priorities for this government. This dramatic reduction is totally unacceptable,” he said. “Unfortunately
the North County area has one of the highest levels of drug misuse in the country. This government is hampering the ability of frontline gardaí to do their jobs in stopping the flow of drugs into our communities, but it is also tying the hands of drug task forces, by under-resourcing them in a serious way.” O’Brien continued, “One of the major problems in the fight against drugs and drug crime is the lack of a dedicated Minister for this area. This was a policy area Fianna Fáil put significant work and emphasis into over many years. By having a dedicated Minister for Drugs, we were able to make significant progress which, unfortunately has not been continued by this government.” “As Chair of the North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Taskforce, I see first-hand the failure to properly resource prevention, policing and cure. We are the worst resourced regional drugs taskforce in the country facing an uphill battle in the fight against drugs and we are losing this fight,” concluded O’Brien.
In a strongly worded statement, the chair of North “The acquisition of these two Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, case workers would make such a senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), has called for equity of difference.” resources for families in crisis in the area. - Senator Darragh O’Brien He told the County Leader, “We opened the North Dublin Community Care Service in Swords in June last has been in existence. “Nearly 250 year to support children, individuals and families individuals and families have trying to cope with the stress of alcohol and accessed the service in the six drug use. Other areas like the North City and West Dublin, or our counterparts on the southside of Dublin, have a range of HSE funded community based services, in addition to the services funded by their respective task forces. Malahide Man Recognised As National Transport Ambassador
Michael Leahy is pictured with his mother, Rene with the award which he won, in the room at his home in Malahide, which houses his vast collections of transport models, including trains, buses and airplanes
A 28 year old Malahide man has been recognised as Ireland’s best ‘Public Transport Ambassador,’ having being nominated by his mother. Towards the end of last year, the National Transport Authority (NTA) held the inaugural Transport for Ireland People’s Awards, which are designed to celebrate and reward the superstars of buses, trams, trains, taxis, walking and cycling. Michael Leahy, who is the eldest of four boys and a girl, attends Prosper Fingal Day Service in Swords, an umbrella group for people with intellectual disabilities. He has a lifelong passion for all things related to transport, and was recognised as Ireland’s ‘Public Transport Ambassador. His mother, Rene told the County Leader about her reason for nominating her son. “Michael has had a passion for transport from a very young age and I thought he would fit the profile. His interest started with Thomas the Tank Engine, Fireman Sam, and this interest in transport continues to this day. He has the brio wooden train collection and we also visited Legoland, where he loved the trains there. Every year, his father, Eamonn brings him to York, to visit one of the largest train museums in Europe, as
well as to Cooltra near Belfast, where there’s a large transport museum. Such is Michael’s passion for all things transport, that he has a room at home converted to accommodate his amazing collection of model trains, buses and aeroplanes. He is very proud of this collection of transport memorabilia, which was lovingly collected over the years. Every day, weather permitting, Michael walks from home in Malahide to his Day Centre in Swords. Here he has won competitions for his artwork, which naturally enough, are all transport related. Michael said that he was very proud and delighted to have been chosen for this award and would love to have his own rail company someday. Rene continued, “Michael tries to persuade us all to change to public transport. He goes on two train trips a year with his dad. Recently, with the help of Prosper Fingal, he set up a walking group. He also spearheaded a DVD on the Hill of Howth tram, where he interviewed people working in the transport museum. Michael said that he hopes to see this tram service being restored some day. Rene jokes that when she Continued on page 17

Former Aer Lingus Staff To Take Action Angry Aer Lingus and DAA pensioners are set to take legal action to challenge the restructuring of their pension scheme, that resulted in their entitlements being cut. If action is mounted against Aer Lingus, it would amount to another spanner in the works for IAG in their attempt to acquire Aer Lingus. The Retired Aviation Staff Association (RASA) said that it has asked it’s
solicitors to proceed with court action. It is understood that RASA will base at least part of it’s challenge on aspects of the restructuring process of the defined benefit Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme (IASS). The IASS serves almost 15,000 former and current workers at Aer Lingus and DAA and has a massive deficit approaching €800 million.

Trade union Siptu has alleged that members of it’s Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) pensions committee are being hampered by the company, in their efforts to engage in talks with staff, before the deadline next month. This allegation has been flatly refuted by the DAA. A spokesperson for the company said; “The release of union representatives to engage in union business is governed by DAA policies, which are in line with the Labour Relations Code of practice in such matters. All union members, including those on the Siptu Pension committee, must follow these procedures,” the spokesperson said. The defined benefit scheme has a deficit of over €700 million when it was frozen on 31st December last year. The DAA has been trying to finalise a resolution to it’s involvement in the troubled Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme (IASS). The DAA have agreed to invest €72 million in a new separate defined contribution scheme, for both it’s active and deferred members. The company has given about 1,200 staff a deadline of 15th March to accept a lump sum for their new pension scheme. They were told that if they did not, they would not be eligible for higher defined contributions from the company. Aer Lingus staff who were members of IASS, have already agreed to join a new defined contribution scheme, established by the airline, which stumped up almost €200 million to establish the new scheme for active and deferred members.

Fitting Welcome Home For Eoin And His Bride Eoin Gleeson from Balheary, Swords and the bride, Jackelene Norrie from Darnum, Victoria in Australia were married on 7th February last in Australia. The wedding and reception were held on the Norrie family farm in Darnum, which is about one hour from Melbourne. They are both back in Ireland for a week or two to continue the celebrations with family and friends, who couldn’t travel over to the wedding. Some of his brothers and sisters put together a little piece of artwork as a welcome home to the new bride and groom, and it caused something of a stir in the area. It’s located in Balheary, beside the church and the imaginative piece depicts the happy couple, made of straw, greeting passers-by. It has already attracted a lot of attention with people stopping to take photos.

More Angling Achievements For Rush Man A local man has had more success at a recent angling awards ceremony. At the specimen fish awards day last Saturday, Thomas Lynch from Rush received his 10 species engraved bronze medal, which that included specimen trout from the Cong River in County Mayo. He was awarded this prize from the Irish Specimen Fish Committee (ISFC) for his capture of 10 specimen. The award was presented to him at the recent Irish Specimen Awards Day. Thomas also received a similar prize last year (of a certificate and silver pin) for a similar achievement. To catch 10 specimen-sized fish alone is an excellent achievement. According to the IFSC, many anglers can take many years to catch 10 specimens and some struggle to catch even one, so the Rush man clearly worked very hard

to catch 10. Thomas told the County Leader previously that: “A lot of work goes into catching Specimen Fish; there’s a lot of specifics that goes into that particular type of fish, so I was chuffed to get another 10 of them.” “These Specimen Fish are fish above a threshold weight set by the ISFC which represent the bigger fish for that species,” he explained. “Anglers who catch a specimen fish must weigh it and measures its length before submitting it.” This seasoned angler, has been fishing since he was five years old, when his late father introduced him to the hobby.

“It’s always been just a hobby of mine, but something that I really enjoy,” he continued. “I found it was something I could do that I was good at, which helped as well!” he added.

Computing Success For Balbriggan Students Students at Ardgillan Community College in Balbriggan recently proved themselves to be adept in the world of computing. DCU’s School of Computing with the strong support of ADAPT, have continued to run their ComputeTY programme for 10 years and it has proven to be an ongoing success year after year, this time with the help of the Balbriggan students. Dr. Rory O’Connor from the
School of Computing explained more about the student programme: “Specifically designed for transition year students, the course aims to teach web design, Java programming and App development in an intense week long programme. It allows the students a first hand opportunity to experience different forms of third level computing, from the creative aspects of user
interface design in a Website and App development to the programming logic of ‘Mikey’ the robot in the programming stream,” he said. Since its launch in 2005, ComputeTY has been completed by over 4,400 Transition Year students from schools around the North County and beyond. The course enables students to develop practical computing skills and gain certification from DCU for their work. The initiative also aims to strengthen the university’s links with the local community by encouraging students who live close by participate in the programme.
O’Brien Wary Of Roadstone Plans For Skerries Green Party representative for the North County, Joe O’Brien has insisted that Roadstone, a subsidiary of multinational company CRH, will require planning permission for its proposed waste recovery facility for Skerries. “CRH don’t exactly have the cleanest record when it comes to following correct procedure and I find it interesting that they have not applied for planning permission to carry out this new activity at the quarry they own in Milverton, Skerries,” he said. “While Roadstone have permission to develop the site as a quarry filling the quarry in with waste, it will require planning permission and the public consultation process that goes with it. I think as a community we need to be vigilant in terms of how Roadstone plans how to operate this proposed facility,” O’Brien explained. He went on to say that he had

formally requested the Council to clarify if the proposed new facility requires new planning permission. “If this is the case, then the community will be in a much better position to voice their objections. It would also allow an opportunity for conditions to be attached to the development that ensure environmental and biodiversity protection and minimal disruption to the community and road users,” he added.

1916 REMEMBERING OUR
VOLUNTEERS
By Cathal Boland
Cumann Na mBan Women were also active within nationalist movements and they had their own organisation known as Cumann Na mBan which was influential and involved in the 1916 Rising. Founded in 1913 at the same time as the Irish Volunteers, they played a very important part in the Rising and in the ensuing War of Independence. Many of the women who joined Cumann Na mBan had been members of the Ladies Land League, after which they turned their attention and their skills to the cause of Irish freedom. The women of Fingal were not found wanting in this regard. Records from the Bureau of Military History show a strong membership all around Fingal. A small insight into the activities of one such woman, will give you a flavour of the level of their importance. Thomasina Weston Lynders was a very active member of Cumann Na mBan; she joined the organisation at its inauguration in 1915. In Easter Week, she acted as Intelligence liaison under the command of Thomas Ashe. She mobilised on Easter Sunday, making her way to Rathbeale where she remained all day. She returned on Easter Monday when her duties included her mobilising volunteers who had not returned to Knocksedan. Other duties included, according to her own statement ‘keeping in touch with Volunteer camps, taking orders from Comdt. Thomas Ashe, associated actively as a unit in Battalion operations, in scouting, intelligence work, and in providing food and clothing etc.’ She remained with the volunteers through Easter week, assisted in dressing wounded from the
Battle of Ashbourne. She also assisted in the removal and burial of the two Volunteers who died at the battle. She collected information on military and RIC movements, carried despatches and directed volunteers to camps who wanted to join up. She hid weapons and also explosives and moved guns around as directed. Michael McAllister who had gone on the run rather than surrender at the end of Easter Week, was hidden by Thomasina in her home for a period of nearly seven months. This was very dangerous for her as the authorities searched the area for him and he had been listed in the police paper ‘Hue and Cry’. After 1916, she continued her membership of Cumann na mBan, working in Central Office, although still under the auspices of the Fingal Brigade. She assisted in organising a reception for returning prisoners, collected funds and continued to attend lectures and First Aid courses. She helped organisedances and flag days, and worked at election time. At this time, Michael Lynch was the Brigade Commander. Her brothers, Charlie and Bartle were active in the War of Independence and her sister Julia was also a member of Cumann Na mBan. Both of these woman were subject to searches by the Black and Tans, the Auxiliaries and the British Military. Thomasina died in 1962 having married John Lynders with whom she ran a shop on North Street, Swords. Without women such a Thomasina, it is difficult to see how the Fingal Volunteers would have operated.

Local Students Cook Up A Storm Two local hospitality students from Rush and Portrane were among a group represented at the DKIT in Chef Ireland 2015 held last week. The students took part in a range of competitions held over three days. These competitions offer the students a chance to showcase their creativity while competing against their peers from other colleges and also professional industry chefs. One of the showcase events for
Chef Ireland was the College Team Competition. In this classic ‘cook serve’ competition, a team of three chefs and two service students cooked and served 12 portions of a three course meal to invited guests. First year Culinary Arts students Katie Coffey from Rush and Olivia O’Neill from Portrane produced a beautiful range of cupcakes and were highly commended for their efforts with certificates of merit. All the students were assisted along the way by their tutors Rosemarie Leonard, Aidan Hoare and Alan Mc Cabe as well as receiving input from the wider Hospitality team in DKIT.

NFRN Ireland’s Joe Sweeney said: “The recent report and recent revelations from the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly have raised alarming details about the scale of involvement of para-militaries in the illicit tobacco trade. a former Minister for Foreign Affairs, suggested this week that a “blind eye” might be being turned to tobacco smuggling because of the peace process. This is a most serious and alarming concern to retailers. “Just three weeks ago a cross-border raid uncovered a cigarette smuggling operation worth an estimated €145 million, proving that the criminal gangs in Ireland are as active as ever,” he said.
Local Anglers Urged To Maintain Life Jackets Recently, 84 per cent of lifejackets brought to RNLI life jacket clinic at Angling Ireland Show were found to have safety issues, so a local RNLI group has urged anglers to keep theirs in top condition. Over 300 anglers from all over the North County and beyond visited the RNLI stand for lifesaving tips and sea safety advice, and to avail of the free lifejacket clinic. Out of the 37 lifejackets brought to the clinic, 31 of them were found to have safety issues. John McKenna, Coastal Safety Officer with Howth RNLI told the County Leader: “A lifejacket is useless if you don’t wear it, but it’s also important to maintain it properly. Three simple steps could help to save your life - check that the gas canister is in good condition and screwed in properly, the firing head is within its expiry date and that a crotch strap is attached securely,” he advised. As spring approaches more people will soon be taking to the water. Last year was the busiest year ever for the local Howth RNLI which had 62 launches and brought 107 people to safety. It was the busiest coastal lifeboat station in Ireland in 2014. “We want everyone around the locality to enjoy the water, but to respect it too. By maintaining and wearing a lifejacket properly, locally anglers and boat-users will give themselves the best possible chance of survival in the case of an emergency,” he added.

‘Cotton Wool Kids, What’s Making Irish Parents Paranoid’ - A Review The novel “Cotton Wool Kids, What’s making Irish parents paranoid?”, written by Stella O’Malley, is about the difficulties faced by parents in raising children in the 21st century. It is not a parenting guide but rather more a confrontation with all the problems for parents and children. A very well written

book, with many experiences, because the author is a mother of two children and a psychotherapist. She tells about her counsellors and their stories but also about her own life with her kids. In the past, it is said, you had only to raise your children but now it has become “parenting”. Trying to do this new job, many

families are overstrained and this causes more problems. Parents get confused because they always want to be perfect and become “over parents”. Too often this can lead to eating disorders, depressions and youth suicide, the
author warns. The author suggests that parents should take it a little bit easier and dare their children to do more. Stella O’Malley advises to do what you, as parents, think is right. Because that is the best, and not what other people expect you to do. She complains about the way parents treat their children, driving them to school because they are afraid that they would be abducted or only because of the dangerous traffic. But if they would teach their children not to go with
strangers, the traffic rules and trust them a little bit more, that wouldn’t be any problem, in her opinion.
She goes on with the fact that many children had forgotten how to play without any electrical devices. Another problem is, that children won’t take risks or attempt some exciting challenges, which is very important for their lives, because of this over parenting becoming an issue. The Parenting Manifesto in the end is very interesting. It suggests that parents should “Allow your kids to get bored” and “Bring nature back into your family’s life.”

Local Man Returns To Rush Stage Shay Griffin has made a welcome return to Rush Musical Society (RMS) this year to take on the role of Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd in the society’s production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” The show runs for nine nights in The Millbank Theatre from the Thursday 19th – 28th of March. The Broadway musical made famous on screen by Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds is full of foot tapping tunes, fancy women, high octane routines, comedy and a collection of melting ballads. “Never in the history of the society have there been so many men signing up to take part in our show just to get into ‘Ms Mona’s Chicken Ranch!,” said
the group. The production is directed by Pat McElwain who is accompanied by Sarah Lynch Barrett as musical director and Denise Donohue as choreographer. Local Niamh Carroll makes her debut with RMS opposite Shay as Ms Mona, the proprietor of the infamous ‘Chicken Ranch’. Yes, they should be chipped! In case the dogs get lost or stray.
Christine McCaffrey, Portrane Yes, I love the idea! Because if they get lost, you will find your animal so much easier, I suppose. With the chips you know who the pets belong to.
Phil Halpin, Swords Yes, because it means if they get lost, you can find them more easily and they go straight back to the owner if they are found around the area.
Karen Power, Swords Well, I think it is a good Idea for dogs. But only for dogs. Because other animals like cats can look after themselves, much better than dogs.
Orla Kennedy, Swords Yes, to stop them from going wild and for protection of the animals themselves too.
Linda Seagrave, Swords First of all, for dogs it is a fantastic idea! There are so many stolen. And when they are stolen it is the only way to get them back. But I wouldn't microchip cats, they can look after themselves and they are kept inside. For cattle or other animals you keep outside, it might be a good idea as well.
Lofiol Sokol, Swords I don't think my cats don't get lost! We look after them and every night they are inside and safe. My cats are also not very trusting to strangers, so I'm quite sure that nobody will get them.
Lillian Fleming, Swords Well, my dog is chipped. It simply means that you can find your dog, just in case the dog gets lost. But yes, all other animals should be chipped. It would be very responsible. If I got a new animal, I would chip it anyway.
Alex McGonagle, Swords Yes, cats and dogs should definitely be microchipped!
Kathleen McCann, Swords Yes, when they would get lost or something. It is so much safer with this chips.

Stretched Community Care Services Continued from page 1 “Even if this is approved, we will only have a fraction of the investment we need and nothing like the resources in the other 23 task force areas across the country. It’s simply not sustainable or equitable and something has to be done,” he said angrily. O’Brien said he is aware of many families, who are at breaking point and need help now. He has written to senior management in the HSE asking them to prioritise this area, which has very clearly been abandoned for decades in terms of resource allocation. He is calling for equity of service provision. He explained, “It’s just so frustrating that there are literally children as young as 14 needing help, whose families don’t know where to turn. If they lived in a different area they would have a choice of supports. I don’t know why our area was seen as less of a priority, and I am working hard with our community partners on the board of the task force, to make sure this is addressed urgently.” Despite the resource issues, O’Brien urges anyone who needs help to contact the North Dublin Community Care Service. They are located at Swords Shopping Mall, just off the main street.
