Construction Underway At Balbriggan Primary Care Centre Construction has begun on the controversial primary care centre site in Balbriggan, which is set to give the economy in the town a major boost. The choice of the site three years ago, was the centre of a controversy which briefly threatened the new coalition government. Dr James Reilly, then Minister for Health, added 15 locations to a list of centres to be developed under a Government stimulus fund in 2012, including two in his own constituency, Balbriggan and Swords. This caused his junior minister, Roisin Shortall to resign in protest, accusing the Minister of playing ‘stroke politics.”

Construction in progress at the site of the new Primary Healthcare Centre in Balbriggan

A spokesperson for the HSE confirmed that the Primary Care Centre for Balbriggan will be delivered via the operational lease mechanism. The preferred provider

has appointed Townmore Construction to complete the construction works which

commenced at the end of May. The construction works are due to be complete in Q3 2016 and it should be operational before end of 2016. Existing Primary Care staff providing a service to the Balbriggan and North County area, currently located in multiple locations, will be co-located within the new Primary Care Centre,” the spokesperson said. Regarding the site in Swords, the spokesperson confirmed that the HSE did select a preferred provider for Swords Primary Care Centre and Planning Permission was granted in March 2014 for the site selected. “We are aware however, that this site has recently been sold. The HSE are now awaiting an update from the Preferred Provider regarding this project.”

Dublin Airport Has Best WiFi In Europe Dublin Airport has the best airport WiFi in Europe, according to a major new study. The study found that Dublin Airport had the fastest WiFi download speeds of any European airport and the third fastest in the world, behind Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand and Chattanooga Airport in the United States. The survey, which was conducted by users of the Rotten WiFi app and website, tested and evaluated the quality of WiFi services in more than 130 airports in 53 countries. The top 10 airports, in terms of the fastest download speeds, features five airports in Europe, two in the US and three in Asia. Dublin Airport has offered its customers unlimited free WiFi since September 2012, and was one of the first major European airports with free WiFi. “We are delighted that our free WiFi product has performed so well in this global study,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison. “Our WiFi is free, fast and unlimited and this is really welcomed by our customers,” Mr Harrison added. “Unlike many free WiFi locations, Dublin Airport does not require a sign-up or login process and this makes our WiFi easy to use and hugely convenient for our customers,” he added. “Travellers have a lot of time to kill while waiting for flights, even if they are on schedule,” said Lina Zaliauskiene of Rotten WiFi. “In such situations, public WiFi service could save the day, if it is fast, good quality, and, of course, secure,” she added.

New ‘Adopt’ Scheme For Balbriggan Group Balbriggan Tidy Towns have launched an Adopt–a–Patch scheme and they are looking for volunteers to take on the care of open areas around the town. This would include litter removal, dealing with graffiti, weeding and planting and other light works as required in specific areas. Balbriggan Tidy Towns are very pleased with the level of interest shown in the Adopt a Patch scheme and the excellent attendance at their launch in the Bracken Court Hotel in Balbriggan recently. The people attending had excellent views on how Balbriggan can be improved and were very keen to play their part in doing this. “There are now 25 adopted patches which is a brilliant start point for the expansion of this idea to

more people and more areas in the town,” said Balbriggan Tidy Towns Chairperson, Joe Troy. “There is no closing date for coming on board and therefore the door is fully open for anyone else who wishes to join in. Also there is no long term commitment required and, as they say on those radio advertisements, there are no tricky conditions or small print. We hope that volunteers enjoy and get satisfaction out of what they are doing and also as more people come on board it will also become a great social activity,” he added. If you can spare a little time on a regular basis to keep your patch clean and litter free, the group would like you to come on board. Some of the details of the scheme are: large areas will be divided up between a number of volunteers, you can nominate your own patch, the work can be done at a time that suits you, gloves, bags, hi-vis vests and litter pickers will be provided and County Council will collect full bags from convenient points.

An exciting new dining experience awaits residents of Swords, with the opening of a new Nepalese restaurant on Main Street in the town. Sagarmatha Kitchen is due to open to the public on Wednesday. 1st July at Unit 4 Main Street, opposite County Hall and adjacent to Swords Castle. Proprietor, Shiva Thapa is no stranger to the hospitality business, having served his time in Singapore and also in Dublin. “This is the only Nepalese restaurant outside of Temple Bar, and it made such sense to open a restaurant in Swords,” he said. “Swords is a real business hub and the people here are warm and friendly. It’s also close to the airport, which is a great advantage for the town. The fact that we are located on Main Street, with a large population will hopefully bring plenty of business. When the opportunity arose to acquire this facility here in Swords, I did not hesitate to do so,” he said. Sagarmatha Kitchen focuses on Nepalese and South Asian cuisine and they provide a home

delivery and take-away service, as well as a beautiful and intimate restaurant facility. “The food served is similar to Indian food, but we use fresh Nepalese spices in our food. A particularly popular Nepalese dish is called Mo Mo, which can be served as a starter or main course. The restaurant also has an extensive wine menu. In welcoming Sagarmatha Kitchen to Swords, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, Tony Lambert said: “Sagarmatha Kitchen is a wonderful addition to Swords. We are always pushing to have more and more restaurants, eating houses and coffee shops in the town centre. This is a wonderful new addition to the town, as there are no other Nepalese restaurants outside of Temple Bar. This is a great bonus, not only for Swords, but for the local area, where people can taste genuine Nepalese cuisine and it adds to the range and choice that we have in the town. We wish Shiva every success in his new venture and we look forward to enjoying good food there,” he said.

National Recognition For Balbriggan Students The 6th class students from Balbriggan Education Together National School, received national recognition for their excellent project, which explored the issues facing children in the developing world. Balbriggan Education Together National School students exhibited their project, ‘Irish Aid & The MDGs’, in Dublin Castle recently. The students were presented with their awards by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan TD. Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan paid a whistle-stop tour of the North County last week, where she paid visits to some of the schools in the region. She visited St Molaga’s NS in Balbriggan, St Michael’s House Special School in Skerries, before heading to Rush, where she visited St Joseph’s Secondary School and Rush National School. She rounded off her tour by visiting Holywell Educate Together NS. The Minister was accompanied by local TD, Brendan Ryan (Lab), to view a number of issues facing schools in the North County.

Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals focus on fighting hunger and poverty and improving the lives of those in the world’s poorest countries. Speaking at the national final, Minister Flanagan said: “The Our World Irish Aid Awards give pupils from all over the North County and beyond a great opportunity to gain insight into the lives of children in the developing world and convey their understanding through projects which are both creative and educational. I was really impressed with the standard of the projects exhibited at the national final. All of the students should be extremely proud of their achievements.” Over 1,000 primary schools throughout Ireland participated in the Our World Irish Aid Awards to date. All entries were assessed on their creativity, understanding of the theme and their impact.

Ryan told the County Leader, “Whilst great work has been done in building new schools and replacing prefabs in many schools in the North County, there are schools which still require extensions and or new buildings, in order to cope with population demand. The Minister visited schools in the North County to see for herself what is required and to view also, the great work taking place by principals and staff on an ongoing basis. When the Minister called to Holywell Educate Together National School, she was greeted by principal, Maria Boyne and members of the school’s student

council. She was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers by pupil, Tiernan Dundon. The school choir sang beautifully for a clearly impressed Minister, before she proceeded to visit some of the classrooms and speak with the children. Part of her visit was to discuss the need to take a new look at the DEIS scheme for disadvantaged schools and to open a dialogue for the need for an Educate Together Secondary School for Swords. It was a very interesting and productive visit following on from a previous visit the Minister made to the area in late May.”

New Garda Vehicles For North County “The Dublin Metropolitan North region of An Garda Síochána, serving the North County, is receiving twelve Garda cars in 2015”, according to local TD, Alan Farrell (FG), who is a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality. “The allocation of the twelve Garda cars will really help the fight against crime in local communities throughout the North County.” “Nine cars have been issued to the region so far this year, with three due to be issued in the coming weeks. In addition to this 2015 allocation, €27.5 million was invested in new Garda vehicles between 2012 and 2014.” “Our local Gardaí will be really bolstered by this influx of new vehicles, which is part of the Government’s comprehensive plan to fight crime. As well as increasing the number of Garda vehicles, we are bringing more Gardaí out from behind the desks and out onto our streets,” said Farrell. “We are also strengthening An Garda Síochána for the future by reopening the Garda training college in

Templemore. It is great to see Templemore rejuvenated again with 300 new students entering the college between last September and December, with another 250 recruits starting their training this year, bringing the total of new Garda recruits to 550. “Too

many people have had their homes violated and the proposed measures include longer sentences for repeat offenders. In a move to support the victims of crime, Minister Fitzgerald is also planning to bring in legislation to allow for implementation of the EU Victims

Directive, and new Garda Victim Support Offices will be established in every Garda division. “With these practical measures and far reaching reforms, we are going to show criminals how seriously we are taking the fight against crime,” he concluded.

HOROSCOPES AQUARIUS

Jan 20 - Feb 18

It’s easy to say that letting go of the past is a prelude to a wonderful future. But relinquishing elements of your life that are as reassuring as they’re familiar is quite another matter. Signs indicate not to do anything drastic.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20

A rewarding week when dealing with personal relationships, when intriguing developments force you into action. In fact, you’ll enjoy dealing with these issues so much that you wonder why you delayed for so long.

ARIES

Mar 21 - Apr 20

Once you begin to discuss problems openly you realise how willing others are to help you resolve them. In fact, this is what helps you this week to tackle dilemmas that you thought you’d just have to live with.

TAURUS

Apr 21 - May 20

The troubles you had last week, especially in the workplace, are about to be completely reversed, as those who thought they’d got away with their misdemeanours discover that they’ll have to pay the piper after all.

Gemini

May 21 - Jun 20

With work-related matters things are about to play into your hands. This so improves your position - and your spirits - that you can well afford to wait until next week, when those around you will finally see things your way.

Cancer

Jun 21 - Jul 22

This is a week when you begin to revitalise elements of your life that you’d given up on ever being exciting. And, better yet, you realise how unimportant difficult and interfering people are in the scheme of things.

Leo

Jul 23 - Aug 23

With all aspects of your life this week, your mood is grim. Complain if you want. Just keep in mind that, by the time next week, with its spectacular planetary activity, is over, you’ll be singing a much happier tune.

Virgo

Aug 24 - Sep 22

Having laboured over decisions involving work, you’re in no mood for change. However, indications are that these decisions are out of your hands - but, the disruption may not be as bad as you first thought.

Libra

Sep 23 - Oct 22

Don’t be too disheartened if the week seems slow - as change is coming. So much so, that with the week’s far more agreeable planetary activity, you’re able to move swiftly to take advantage of new prospects on offer.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22

This is a week when you should be philosophical about downturns - and keep your own counsel. With next week’s far more salubrious planetary activity, you’ll be glad you didn’t say everything you were thinking.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 - Dec 21

However unsettling the outcome of one particular confrontation, finally having all the facts out in the open will come as a relief. Still, you should handle the situation carefully and slowly as things are bound to be confused.

Capricorn

Dec 22 - Jan 19

You will be seeking reassurance with a business matter. But what you need to do is exercise patience to bide your time - until you see the stunning opportunities accompanying next week’s considerably better planetary activity.

Swords/Baldoyle Youth Service, have entered their film project into the Awards and will rely on public support via online voting to win one of the top awards. The X-HALE Youth Awards will take place on Thursday, 2nd of July in the Lighthouse Cinema. Over 41 youth groups from around the country will attend the Awards to see their entry showcased on the big screen. X-HALE is an initiative of the Irish Cancer Society, which engages young people to address the issue of smoking in their own communities and encourage their peers not to start smoking. The X-HALE Youth Awards is the culmination of months of hard work by the youth groups in creating their films from scratch. Marie-Louise Neary, Cancer Prevention Officer at the Irish Cancer Society said: “The film entries from the local groups are very strong and effectively convey some really important messages around the issue of smoking. The youth groups have developed these films themselves from filming, editing and producing to scriptwriting and acting, they have delivered impressive results in the form of film projects which will be showcased at the X-HALE Youth Awards in a few weeks.” “They have raised some tough questions of the tobacco industry and have sent a clear signal to them that their generation will be smoke-free. We would like to wish all the youth groups involved the best of luck ahead of the national event in July. As the EU summit was in progress, we learnt of three major terrorist attacks across France, Kuwait and Tunisia with loss of life and the awakening of fear particu-

Later, President Tusk, speaking for the EU Council, said that Nato’s Secretary General had attended the Summit to discuss the new threats facing Europe at a time of hybrid warfare, global terrorism and cyberattacks. Then they must control and stop the cause of the flow of new migrants. To fail to do so will create a climate where war is inevitable. It is time for Europe to assert itself on the world stage and provide courageous leadership.

Research Reveals Illegal Parking Behaviour Of Motorists Research by motoring solutions specialist, easytrip, has revealed that over 40 per cent of Irish drivers from around the North County and beyond, have admitted to parking on double yellow lines. Other illegal parking behaviour included parking in a restricted loading bay, parking at a bus stop and parking in a bus lane or clearway during restricted hours. The research has also revealed that more than half of male drivers preferred to park onstreet compared to 33 percent female motorists. Of the female drivers surveyed, two thirds choose multi-storey car parks with reasons for choosing so including convenience, avoiding being clamped, safety

and security and saving money compared to onstreet. Parking incidents are a common occurrence with the research revealing that over 40 per cent of drivers found their car to be dented or scratched when parked. This was followed by motorists getting clamped for parking in the wrong location and a fifth of those surveyed admitting that on occasion they couldn’t find where they parked their car. On a more positive note, it seems that we are a generous nation with 33 per cent of respondents stating that another motorist had given them the remaining time on their parking ticket to use. Respondents to the survey revealed that the most annoying parking

habits for 82 percent of male respondents were drivers who took up two parking spaces while 90 per cent of women found those that parked too close to their car as the most frustrating. Other irritating habits included parking in a disabled space – when they aren’t disabled and parking in a family car space – when they’re not a parent with child. Respondents were also asked to admit what habits they were guilty of and blocking the parking aisle while waiting for a parking space came out in pole position at 60 per cent. This was followed by admissions of parking too close to another car, taking up two parking spaces and robbing another driver’s parking space.

Minister of State for Business and Employment, Ged Nash together with new County Mayor, Cllr. David O’Connor, officiated at the opening of three start-up food production units in Drinan Enterprise Centre, Swords, on Monday, 22nd June last. Supported and managed by the Fingal Local Enterprise Office, Drinan Enterprise Centre is already home to 28 start-up businesses providing more than 100 jobs. Since it opened five years ago, it has been a catalyst for numerous start-up businesses in the Swords area. The launch of these three new bespoke food

production units adds to the already impressive offering that the Drinan Enterprise Centre has available for start-up businesses. The three food start-up units have been professionally designed to comply with all required Food Safety Standards. Interest in the food units has been strong since the recent announcement that they would be available for occupancy in June, 2015. Opening the new units, Minister Nash commented “I am delighted to see the proactive approach Fingal County Council and the Local Enterprise Office are taking by focusing resources on small growing food businesses with potential to

grow. Many food businesses start in home kitchens, but need high quality affordable facilities if they are to expand, develop and create employment. I wish Drinan Enterprise Centre and its new food tenants the very best in this new venture.” Paul Reid, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said, “Fingal is an area rich in food production and this sector plays a huge role in employment creation in the region. The opening of these new food units today reinforces the commitment of the County Council and the Local Enterprise Office to support and develop the food sector in the county.”

O’Brien Condemns Snub Of MS Drug The Government’s ongoing refusal to make a lifechanging drug available to people with Multiple Sclerosis is forcing MS sufferers out of work, according to local Fianna Fáil Senator, Darragh O’Brien. Senator O’Brien told the Seanad that the Minister for Health has spent the past 18 months ignoring pleas from MS sufferers themselves, who say their standard of living is dramatically reduced, because they do not have access to the miracle drug Fampyra. “Fampyra is proven to work for around a third of MS sufferers. This Senator O’Brien means that the lives of around 3,000 people with Multiple Sclerosis in Ireland could be dramatically improved if they had access to it,” the Senator explained. “I have raised this issue repeatedly with Minister Varadkar and his predecessor since February 2014 and yet no attempt whatsoever has been made by the Minister or the HSE to make the lifechanging drug available. “Fampyra is a mobility drug. It helps people with later stage MS to walk and retain control over their bodies, thereby allowing them to stay in work and live independently. The drug is currently not available under the drug payment scheme, putting it out of the reach of thousands of MS sufferers in Ireland. As a result, many are confined to a wheelchair and have been forced to give up work,” he continued. “It defies logic that the Government sees no reason to pursue this issue. It is a fact that many people with Multiple Sclerosis in Ireland will be in a position to stay in work and live independently with the help of Fampyra. Without Fampyra, they are being forced onto social welfare. Quite simply the State cannot afford not to act.” “I intend to raise this every single week in the Seanad until the Health Minister finally wakes up and makes Fampyra available in Ireland,” O’Brien concluded.

New Production From Malahide Man To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising , a Malahide man has created a show; written, directed and produced it, especially for the occasion. The production, entitled ‘Ireland Rises’ celebrates the Dublin people of that time. The audience will experience a production never seen before this summer. With a cast of just 13, ‘Ireland Rises’ is full of well known Irish classic songs along with a number of original songs composed by brothers Billy and Stephen Kilkenny. Set in a public house on Sackville Street Dublin, the audience will watch as the patrons and staff find themselves caught in the cross fire, where the six days of the rising is condensed in to one night. Scared and trapped in the public house, each character finds refuge by telling their individual stories through music, song and dance. Songs includes newly composed material - ‘Ireland Rises’ and much loved Irish classics including the ‘Auld Triangle’. Malahide man, Billy Kilkenny of Plimsoll Line Entertainment wrote, produced, directed and stars in ‘Ireland Rises’ and has spent most of his professional career performing Irish music abroad and feels the new show will give tourists and Irish alike a different view on the 1916 Rising from what has been read in history books. “Ireland Rises will set up residency in the Tivoli Theatre this summer with eight shows a week. We wanted to show audiences from home and abroad what an important part of our history the Easter Rising was to our nation,” the local man said.

Onwards And Upwards For Swords Mens’ Shed In the last year or so, the phenomenon that is Mens’ Sheds has really taken off, and they are opening up all over the place. Swords Mens’ Sheds has been operational since February 2014, when it was set up as a social space for men to chat, read the paper, have a laugh and meet new friends. The idea was that it would be great for retired men or widowers, who could come together and share stories and provide a focus in their lives. The mens’ shed in Swords, which is located at the Riasc Centre in Kinsealy, is a dedicated, friendly and welcoming meeting place where men come together and undertake a variety of mutually agreed activities.

It should be operated like a business, without being a business. It’s all about making something creative.” At present we are learning new skills and are confined to making things like window boxes and bird boxes, which do not require much skill. However, as we progress, we intend to create more specialised items like jewellery boxes and cigar boxes, which are more refined and require more skill to make,” said Ray.

Fisherman Dies In Tragic Accident The North County has a wonderful seafaring tradition and has some of the finest fishing fleets in the country, so the local community here will be saddened to hear about any death at sea, no matter where it happens. Billy McKinley, a single man in his 50s from Dunfanaghy, Co Donegal, who fell into the ocean from his boat and was drowned was described as a man who ‘lived for the sea’. The tragic accident happened after he fell overboard six miles from Horn Head recently. The alarm was raised by a friend who was on board at the time. “Billy lived for the sea and was a very experienced fisherman who had been at sea for more than 30 years,” said a friend of his.

First Outdoor Movie Night Comes To Donabate Outdoor Movie nights are coming to Donabate and are set to be a bit hit with the local population. Usually these events happen in urban parks and attract large crowds. However this is changing now and the Waterside House Hotel in Donabate, having recently been taken over by the Choice Hotel Group, is bringing the first Outdoor Movie Night to the area. It will be held on the large sea view terrace overlooking Donabate Beach and Lambay. The concept is the same as the other outdoor movie events, but in this occasion, all visitors can also avail of the hotel facilities, including a full bar and BBQ on the night “This is unique to Donabate and Portrane and indeed the larger region of the North County . A fun and different night’s entertainment is guaranteed,” says the event organiser. “The location is fabulous and there is no better spot than watching your old time favourites with this stunning backdrop and background sound of the waves crashing in.” The Waterside House Hotel is planning to show more classics during the summer. Kids’ movies include Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Willy Wonka (the original one). The adults can be in with a treat for a very popular Grease evening, followed by Dirty Dancing in August and Mamma Mia in September.
