More Jobs For Balbriggan Grimme, the giant German agricultural machinery manufacturing company, turned the sod on a new distribution centre at Stephenstown Industrial Estate, Balbriggan last week. The company will now move from their existing plant in Ballyboughal to Stephenstown. CEO of Balbriggan Chamber, Sean Corrigan greeted the representatives of Grimme to Balbriggan and said that the importance of an agricultural machinery company, like Grimme setting up in Balbriggan, in Ireland’s Market Garden was of enormous significance. In June 2013, Grimme Ireland Equipment Ltd moved to their current premises in

By Patrick Finnegan Ballyboughal. This move proved positive, as the company’s business continued to grow, rapidly becoming a team of three technicians, one apprentice, two parts personnel, and an accounts manager. Over the next year, manager of Grimme Ireland, Cecil Morgan and his new team soon realised they

would quickly outgrow their current site once again. Approximately eighteen months ago, the search for new, larger premises began and after discussions with our German management team, it was decided that they should purchase land and build a purpose built premises accommodating the company and its future growth. After discussions and negotiations with the County Council, a site located on an industrial area near to the Balbriggan bypass, less than half a mile from the M1 motorway at junction 5 was found and

The competition is now in its third year and Oisín Geoghegan, Head of Local Enterprise said that the standard of entries is higher than ever. “The exceptionally high standard of entries will make the competition tough and challenging, but it will also help bring out the full potential of entrants and inspire them to succeed whether they win at the County Final stage or not.” Among the special guests at the awards ceremony will be Minister of State for Employment and Small Business Pat Breen TD, County Mayor, Cllr. Darragh Butler and Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid.

Potential Rezoning Of Swords Green Belt A proposed amendment to the County Development Plan is causing concern for a local councillor, who fears that it would lead to the further erosion of Swords and adversely affect the quality of life of local residents. Cllr Joe Newman (NP) spoke to the County Leader about Amendment SH 8.6 which he believes will mean the erosion of the green belt designated area between Knocksedan and Brookdale/Ridgewood, which he is sure will lead to urban sprawl. “This amendment is on a section of land that is designated Green Belt at present and which is in an ideal location for the consideration of the development of green infrastructure, such as an urban forest/woodland. “This would encourage further green belts, which I believe will help to transform Swords and its environs for the better. It will also help to attract

wildlife to the area. Already we have b u z z a r d s nesting in the Knocksedan area, and we Cllr. Newman hope to encourage this and the

other wildlife to this area,” he said. “The proposed amendment could be interpreted as a lever to rezone these lands from Green Belt to resi-

dential, which I believe is liable to create urban sprawl in Swords. I’m calling on the executive of the Council to carefully consider the implications that this amendment presents,” he concluded.

These very sick children are just one example, and we want to ensure that their families can avoid any additional stress and worry with this automatic entitlement to a medical card,” concluded Reilly

Children’s Medical Card Legislation On The Way Local senator, Dr. James Reilly (FG) has welcomed confirmation from the Taoiseach that legislation to make medical cards automatic for children on Domiciliary Care Allowance, is to be brought to Government shortly. This will come as a welcome boost to local families with children who are severely disabled. Reilly said, “This is very important legislation, which is urgently needed. Children who Dr. Reilly are in receipt of domiciliary care allowance payments, or children with severe disabilities, are in

significant need of a medical card, which not only covers the supply of medication but also opens the door to other badly needed medical attention. “I’m delighted that the Taoiseach has now confirmed that the Heads of the Bill will be brought to Government shortly. “I know from talking to local families that this Bill will come as a huge relief to families with very sick children, who are in receipt of Domiciliary Care Allowance. Once they are in receipt of this Allowance, these children will be provided

Rush Included In Call For Increased Sewage Infrastructure The Environmental Protection Agency has called for a substantial and sustained increase in investment in public waste water treatment infrastructure to protect public health and the environment on foot of substantial discharges of raw sewage last year. The EPA’s 2015 Urban Waste Water Treatment Report details a litany of failures and problems with sewage treatment all over the country. Twenty-nine large towns and cities failed to meet mandatory EU sewage standards, the deadline for which was ten years ago.

Untreated sewage is being dumped into the sea and rivers in 43 places, including Rush. The EPA says it is unacceptable that the timetable tackling the discharges from 20 of these areas has already slipped by almost two years. The agency says the current level of capital investment is simply not enough to tackle the infrastructural deficiencies and investment running € 100m per year below the average spent between 2000 and 2011. The report found that waste water from 45 areas was linked to river pollution and that sewage discharges contributed to poor quality bathing water. EPA programme manager David Flynn said an additional €100 million a year needs to be invested in waste water infrastructure. He said there has been a legacy of “decades of under investment in the system”.

Membership costs €20 for a family, €15 for an individual and €10 for Seniors. This covers entrance to our 6 talks, which cost €5 individually, and of course attendance and voting rights at the AGM.” She continued, “We are delighted to announce that our books, including our latest publication Balbriggan a History in Maps 16551900, are available in Book Haven in Drogheda Street Balbriggan. As always books can be purchased at our regular talks or directly from Committee members.”

Olympic Hero Opens Malahide Sea Scout Den Malahide Sea Scouts were honoured to have Olympic Sailing Silver Medallist, Annalise Murphy along with the Chief Scout, Christy McCann open their new State of the Art facility at St James’s Terrace in Malahide. Both Annalise and Christy jointly unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion and then proceeded on a tour of the facility. Meanwhile, parents, friends and past members assembled with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders for presentations in the main hall upstairs. Group Leader, Colin Lynch related how honoured the group was to have a person of Annalise Murphy’s stature and reputation to open the Scout Den and

he referred to her exploits in the London and Rio Olympics and the role model that she provides for young people. Speaking to the assembled crowd, Annalise related how she progressed up through the sailing ranks and the roles her coaches played in highlighting what she could achieve and she challenged all of the scouts present not to be satisfied with what they had already achieved, but to look to what they might achieve. Chief Scout, Christy McCann recalled the amazing achievements

that are associated with Malahide Sea Scouts and being the largest Sea Scout Group in Europe, that people long after they have left the Group, not only remember that they were a Sea Scout, but that they were a Malahide Sea Scout. Group Leader, Colin Lynch then thanked all of local community groups who facilitated the Group when the den was closed and presented them with Thank You plaques, these included Deirdre Somers Commodore of Malahide Yacht Club, Peter O’Kelly Group Leader of Portmarnock Scouts,

Mags O’Riordan on behalf of Malahide Community School and Michael Lynch on behalf of St Sylvester’s Parish Centre. Last to speak was Cub Leader, Niall Rock, the Leader who was nominated by the Group to project lead the refurbishment. As he finished his presentation, he was bestowed with honorary life membership of Malahide Sea Scouts by the Group Leader Colin Lynch and former Group leader Robert McKernan, becoming only the sixteenth person to be awarded such an honour in over ninety years. Metro North Key To Solving City’s Traffic Chaos Dublin Chamber of Commerce has called on the Government to address the traffic congestion crisis, and has identified the urgent delivery of Metro North, as a crucial element in the process. Dublin Chamber CEO Mary Rose Burke said, “The Government must think bigger and bolder for transport in Dublin, if it is avoid sleep-walking into a congestion crisis. An urgent focus must now be placed on bringing more ambitious projects, such as Dart Underground and Metro North to fruition. Dublin

Chamber issued the call after figures released by Transport Infrastructure Ireland showed that traffic levels in Dublin rose by 5 per cent in the past year. The Chamber has warned that Dublin’s transport network is now at capacity and that while the opening up of the Phoenix Park Tunnel to passenger trains is welcome, the time for squeezing capacity from existing infrastructure is over. “Measures such as opening up the Phoenix Park tunnel provide a small quick win, but Dublin’s existing transport system is creaking

at the seams and a significant increase in investment is now required before the city grinds to a halt. The number of people coming into Dublin is growing all the time. As the economy continues to grow, the pressure on our transport network is increasing going forward, while it’s important that existing infrastructure is sweated as much as possible, small tweaks alone won’t be enough.” Dublin Chamber said the upcoming Mid-Term Review of the Government’s Capital Plan must reflect the

increased threat of congestion. The Chamber said the Mid-Term Review must include a timeline for the construction and completion of Dart Underground and also bring forward the start and finish dates for Metro North. Ms Burke concluded: “When it comes to transport, it is time that we started favouring more ambitious, integrated, longterm solutions. As a country we’re not spending near enough on new transport infrastructure. Currently we’re spending around €175m while competitor cities abroad like Manchester and London - cities we’re competing with on a daily basis for business and jobs - are spending 2 or 3 times as much.”

Owen Sheehy takes over from founding partner Gerry McInerney, who will remain with the firm as a partner and trusted business advisor to clients. Sheehy joined the firm 25 years ago and became a Partner in 2002. He will lead the 40 strong McInerney Saunders team, providing accountancy, taxation and business advice to local and international clients across all sectors. Speaking at the announcement, Gerry McInerney told staff that, “when we started the firm back in 1980, we focussed on working with our clients to deliver excellence in customer care and built the firm slowly and steadily.” Sheehy said, “I am delighted to be appointed Managing Partner. We’ve always worked hard to build strong and lasting relationships with our clients and deliver excellence in customer care and that will remain my priority. Our firm is in a time of growth with the opportunities arising from its links to UK200 and the international body IAPA. Working alongside my fellow Partners, I look forward to leading the team and growing the firm in the years to come.” Speaking about Sheehy’s appointment as Managing Partner, McInerney said, “we’ve been joined by many wonderful staff throughout the years, including Owen. Owen will now lead our team of 40 staff, supported by his fellow partners Susan McKittrick, Neal Morrison, Donagh Waters, John Fitzgerald and myself. Local Authority Of The Year! Continued from page 1 “Fingal County Council has shown exceptional leadership through a vision for the future development of the locality and the broader economic region. They have demonstrated tremendous ambition and capacity for innovation across numerous projects and is recognised for its willingness to share best practice with peers. The drive to continuously improve and deliver better services to citizens makes

Fingal a worthy winner of Local Authority of the Year.” Fingal Dublin Chamber President, Guy Thompson said, “The Chamber are delighted that Fingal County Council were awarded the Local Authority of the Year Award 2016. Tremendous credit is due to Paul Reid and his team for winning this well-deserved award. It was a great honour to be present when they received the Local Authority of the Year Award 2016.” Chamber CEO, Tony

Lambert also praised the Council for being awarded citations for nine of the sixteen awards, which was amazing in itself. “The Council won the Heritage and Built Environment Award for their Swords Castle – Digging History project and were crowned the Local Authority of the Year to top it all. This award is great for all of Fingal and the County Council staff should be very proud of their achievement.” said Lambert. Fingal County Council

was represented at the presentation ceremony by County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler and Chief Executive, Paul Reid and they were joined by several councillors and Council staff. Mayor Butler said, “I would like to offer my congratulations, on behalf of all our councillors, to the staff of Fingal County Council on winning the Local Authority of the Year Award. I always say, whenever I get a chance, that we have great and dedicated staff across all departments and a great management team. Now we have the proof,” he said. Paul Reid echoed those sentiments and said: “We have tremendous staff right across the organisation and this is

reflected in the many emails and letters I receive complimenting the work that we do. When everything we do is put together it is a compelling example of public service excellence and that is why I am delighted that this commitment and work has been properly recognised.” Swords Castle: Digging History is Fingal County Council’s first Community Archaeology project. It provides people from communities across the County with a unique opportunity to take part in a real archaeological excavation. The project is now in its second year, and under the supervision of Gerry Clabby, Heritage Officer and Christine Baker, Community Archaeologist, allows volunteers to work with a small team of professional archaeologists.

With no crowds, no queueing, no hauling shopping bags around and no stress trying to find a car parking space – online shopping is definitely an appealing option. Online shopping has become very popular in Ireland. The addiction many of us have to online shopping is a struggle, and the struggle is real! But By Darren O’Reilly remember just because you don’t physically hand over a card or cash doesn’t mean it’s free. Be mindful of what you are buying, create a budget or shopping list before you log on and stick to it. Here are some of my top tips to shopping safely online:

USE FAMILIAR WEBSITES In the words of Julie Andrews – “Getting to know you, Getting to know all about you”. Start with sites that you know have a trustworthy reputation rather than shopping with a search engine. Be cautious of misspellings or sites using a different top-level domain (.net instead of .com, for example)—those are the oldest tricks in the book. Yes, the sales on these sites might look enticing, but that's how they trick you into giving up your info.

LOOK FOR THE LOCK Never ever buy anything online using your credit card from a site that doesn't have SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption installed. You'll know if the site has SSL because the URL for the site will start with HTTPS:// (instead of just HTTP://). An icon of a locked padlock will appear, typically in the status bar at the bottom of your web

browser, or right next to the URL in the address bar. It depends on your browser. And never ever give anyone your credit card over email. Ever!

DON'T TELL ALL No online shopping store needs your PPS number or your birthday to do business. However, if fraudsters get their hands on them, combined with your credit card number they can do a lot of damage. The more they know, the easier it is to steal your identity. When possible, default to giving up the least amount of information.

CHECK STATEMENTS Regularly, check your statements when you shop online and don’t wait for your bill to come at the end of the month. Be on the lookout for fraudulent charges. If you do see something wrong, pick up the phone to address the matter quickly.

HAPPY SHOPPING!

More Jobs For Balbriggan Continued from page 1 representatives, including Brendan Ryan TD, Senator James Reilly and local councillors, Tony Murphy, Gráinne Maguire, Tom O’Leary, Malachy Quinn and David O’Connor. The sod turning was performed by Deputy County Mayor, Cllr Eithne Loftus and Mr Christoph Grimme, son of company owner Mr Franz-Grimme. The company hope the investment in this new facility reinforces the commitment they have towards their Irish customers, and the importance of their business in the future. The new building is hoped to be completed by July 2017, and be fully operational for the 2017 harvest period. Senator James Reilly has welcomed Grimme Equipment Ireland Ltd to Balbriggan and said, “I greatly welcome this development, which consists of a retail/service area, workshop and ancillary offices and facilities. The additional 20/40 jobs it will provide is a very welcome addition to the Balbriggan area and will bring much needed new employment and economic activity to the North County Dublin area. This is another significant boost for Balbriggan which has often felt left behind in the past. It is encouraging to see flagship companies like Grimme locating in the Fingal area where we have the infrastructure, a skilled workforce and ready access to the Motorway Network, Ports and the Airport.

Local Areas Pinpointed For New Homes The County Council has welcomed the announcement by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government of four areas within the county for the fast-track delivery of homes. Minister Simon Coveney, TD, announced on Thursday 10th November that Oldtown/Mooretown, Donabate and North City Fringe, which

includes Portmarnock, had been identified as major urban housing delivery sites with the potential to deliver 9,400 homes in the long term and 4,800 in the short-term. In addition, the County Council has applied for €38 million in funding under the €200 million Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Fund, which is Pillar Three of the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan for Housing

and Homelessness, in relation to these four strategic sites. The plans for the four sites include the provision of roads, parks, recreation areas, drainage and access to public transport. The Director of Strategic Planning and Infrastructure, AnnMarie Farrelly, said the Council are at an advanced stage in their plans. “The infrastructure proposals for these areas will be ready to proceed without delay once funding comes on stream,” she said. “Homes are already under construction on a number of these sites while the distributor road in Donabate, which is a key piece of infrastructure for that area, is due to commence in the second quarter of 2017. “While these four areas have been identified by the Government for fast-tracking as part of the Rebuilding Ireland programme, there are

Martin Schulz (SPD), President of the EU Parliament announced he is resignation from the post. Schulz has held the positon since 2012 and is set to return to German domestic politics. The Presidential vacancy will be hotly contested. The current divide of “high office” sees the EPP holding both the top jobs in both the Commission and the Council with the SPD in the Chair in Parliament. This divide was part of the political settlement after the last elections in 2014. It is understood that as part of that agreement the Presidency of the Parliament will now go to a member of the EPP while the Presidency of the Council held by Donald Tusk (EPP) will next autumn go to a member of the SPD. There seems to be some backsliding on this element of the agreement by the EPP. It is thought that the EPP had hoped that Schulz would wish to stay in position and an agreement would be reached. Many parliamentarians in the EPP now see the opportunity to put their own case for advancement forward. Ireland’s Mairead McGuinness, who represents the Midlands Northwest constituency in the parliament, is one such MEP. A current Vice President, she is extremely efficient and well qualified other prime sites across the county such as Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush and Dublin 15, where the Council is also well placed to have any necessary infrastructure delivered,” she said. There is currently planning permission in place for 10,000 homes in Fingal and the Council continues to ensure

for the post. Should she be successful she will be the second Irish person to hold the office. Pat Cox By Cathal Boland held the post 2002-2004. Schultz intends to contest the German Federal Election next year. The 55 year old centre left politician will be a challenger for the post of Chancellor, one whom Ms Merkel needs to fear. Angela Merkel has, in the past week, confirmed that she will run for a fourth term as Chancellor. Her CDU party is showing 31.5 per cent in the polls this is a loss of 9.5 per cent since the 2013 election. Her real problem is with her coalition partners, the SPD who are showing at 24 per cent. With the potential impact of Schultz’s active participation in domestic politics may mean Merkel’s vote may not be enough to keep her in the top position. Merkel is also under pressure from her sister CSU party. Their leader insists that they will only join in Government if a cap on refugees of 200,000 per year is agreed on. Should the CSU break their long alliance with Merkel’s CDU, then it’s all up for grabs.

there is adequate zoned land in the right locations to facilitate housing as well as economic and social development. Local Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell has said that the delivery of new homes in the North County is to be fast tracked, as part of the Rebuilding Ireland Initiative. He said, “Today is a good

start in Fine Gael’s battle to increase housing supply. We have identified the sites here in the North County and around the country with the greatest potential for development and both I and the Government now want to see developers getting on with building the homes that people need.”

Great News For Rural Towns And Villages There has been a broad welcome to the news that our rural towns and villages are set to benefit from government funding. The towns and villages announced last week by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD as beneficiaries of the scheme are; BALLYBOUGHAL - €34,000 • Installation of outdoor exercise equipment BALROTHERY - €100,000 • To undertake landscape improvements at the entrance to, and the exit from the village • To build a new pathway linking Glebe Park to an existing heritage trail through the village • Installation of outdoor exercise equipment in Glebe Park • Boundary improvements to Balrothery graveyard. BALSCADDEN - €34,000 • Installation of outdoor exercise equipment DONABATE - €39,000 • Install signage to direct people from Donabate train station to Newbridge House and Farm. In addition, the project will open up, widen, and replace, an old gateway at the back of the estate, making the facility more accessible for local residents. LOUGHSHINNY - €29,000 • Streetscape and environmental enhancements to a strategic site at the entrance to Loughshinny Village on the R128 Rush Skerries Road. RUSH - €99,000 Local senator, James Reilly complimented the

excellent work done by the local communities and Fingal County Council in putting together the applications and securing these grants. He added “The work which can now be undertaken with these grants will add significantly to the environment and the quality of life in the beneficiary towns and villages and will enhance the tourism product of the County. In each case, these awards will be further supplemented by funding from Fingal County Council,” he said. County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler also welcomed the news and said, “The projects awarded funding under the scheme will increase footfall and stimulate the local economy of the county’s town and villages. Funded projects will include the development of a playground, the installation of outdoor exercise equipment at a number of sites, streetscape and environmental enhancements, and new pathways and signage that will unlock existing amenities to both visitors and local residents. Paul Reid Chief Executive Fingal County Council said: “I am delighted with this news and I wish to congratulate all and acknowledge the hard work that went into putting these submissions together. This news comes on the back of the fantastic successes enjoyed by local towns and villages in this year’s Tidy Towns competition and it further recognises the cooperation and partnership enjoyed by the local communities and Fingal County Council and shows what is possible.” “I am pleased to note Minister Humphreys’ comments that this scheme will be available again in 2017 and I look forward to more benefits
