Fears For Future Of Local Courts Local solicitor and Fianna Fail candidate for Swords in the upcoming local elections, John Hennessy, has confirmed that the court services in both Swords and Balbriggan, are set to be wound up. Speaking to the County Leader, Hennessy said, “It has been made known to me that the Court Service has recommended the closure of Swords and Balbriggan courts, along with the one in Dun Laoghaire.” “This would be an absolute tragedy for the North County, should the District Courthouses at Swords and Balbriggan be closed. This is another example of a sharp knife being brought to bear on services in the North John Hennessy County, by this Fine Gael/ Labour government. Everything is now being centralised. It now means that the people of Swords and Balbriggan will now have to trek all the way to the Courts of Criminal Justice in Parkgate Street, to have small claims and family law cases heard. This is another example of services being taken away from our area. The presence of courts in Swords and Balbriggan generates economic activity in the area, where shops and other services benefit from the influx of people to the towns. “This is just another example of diminishing services in the North County area, following on from the closure of Garda stations. We need to stop this happening, before we turn our main streets into deserts. These towns are mushrooming in size, and there is no sense whatsoever in this move,” he said. He firmly believes that any savings to be made will be negligible. “I know for a fact that there is no mortgage due on Swords courthouse, and the paltry savings will be made up primarily of wages saved from the closure,” concluded an angry Hennessy. The County Leader contacted the Court Services in an attempt to throw some light on their plans. A spokesperson was less definite about the situation than Hennessy, when saying, “The Courts Service, during 2013, undertook a review of court services in the greater Dublin Area which included Swords and Balbriggan District Courts. The purpose of the review was to examine options to ensure that the Courts Service can continue to maintain an appropriate level of front line services to court users throughout Dublin city and county.” The statement continued, “The review is still under consideration by the Courts Service and no definitive proposals have been formulated in relation to any court venue being reviewed, including Swords and Balbriggan District Courts. No decision has been made to close any of these venues.” “Any proposal to change the status of Swords and Balbriggan District Courts would be subject to a comprehensive and detailed assessment. The criteria which would be taken into consideration would include an assessment of travelling distances, which court users might have to make to an alternative Court venue. This review would inform any future process for making proposals, and would then would become a matter for the Board of the Courts Service,” the statement concluded.
Local Politician, Daly Praised The performance of local TD, Clare Daly (ULA) in the lead up to the recent resignation of Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan, and the ongoing Garda whistleblower controversy, is one that many regard as crucial in the political fall-out that followed the affair. Swords based Daly has proved to be a powerful advocate in seeking justice in this controversy, to make sure that former Commissioner Callinan was held to account for his role in the affair, in which he used the word ‘disgusting’, when referring to the role of the whistleblowers. She also played a prominent role in keeping the pressure on Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter,
which ultimately culminated in an apology by him to the two Garda whistleblowers at the centre of the political storm.
By Patrick Finnegan Perhaps her finest hour came on Tuesday last, 25th March, when she appeared on RTE’s Morning Ireland programme. It was the day that Commissioner Callinan resigned, and many will wonder if Daly’s powerful contribution on that show contributed to the Commissioner’s demise. When asked on the show, if a simple, sincere apology from the Commissioner in respect of his remarks, would be acceptable, she said it was
“gone beyond the point where an apology would be genuine. She also called for reform of the Gardai, but this could not be achieved, without reform at the top. She said, “We need real democratic accountability of An Garda Siochana. It’s a little like having pyrite in our home. You can cover all the cracks and they will disappear for a while, but they’ll return, unless you eliminate the contaminated infill, and that’s what we have to do. It’s now time for Commissioner Callinan and Minister Shatter to go and let us have a discussion about the need for real accountability and oversight within the force,” she said. Many locals have told this newspaper of how proud they are, that one of their own TDs played a prominent role in such a major national event. Most fair minded people, without an agenda, believe that the unfolding developments are Continued on page 6

Action Of Swords Landlord Criticised A local business has been subjected to what is being described as ‘a high handed act’ by it’s landlord. Well known Swords business, Shoe Mews, which is located on Forster’s Way and owned by Patrick Hanley, had it’s locks changed in a dawn swoop by the landlord. Hanley told the County Leader: “I got a call at 6.49am on the morning of Saturday, 15th March last - the St Patrick’s weekend, telling me the locks had been changed on the shop. The management company were not at all helpful and I didn’t know what to do. It was then that I decided to call local TD, Clare Daly (ULA) to see if she could have influence in the matter. She arrived around 8am and she was treated the same way as I was. It was then that we decided that we needed a solicitor to try to sort things out. We called local solicitor, John Hennessy, who came over to the shop. The management team were not co-operative with John Hennessy him either. Both Clare and John were excellent and I would not have been able to cope without their help,” said Mr Hanley. Hennessy, who is also candidate for Fianna Fail in the upcoming local elections, told the County Leader that

he then issued urgent Court proceedings, and on foot of those proceedings, the situation was reversed and a settlement was reached. The upshot is that Shoe Mews can continue to trade at it’s present location for a period of two months, before locating permanently to it’s other shop at Dotie Bobbins, also on Forster’s Way. Daly deplored the actions of the landlord and condemned the “unacceptable treatment of Mr Hanley, who is trying valiantly to trade his way out of difficult economic conditions.” Hanley said, “It was very underhanded to get a call so early in the morning and I feel that this has done great damage to my business and the fear is that this action will undermine our reputation with our customers,” he said.

The 2014 Dublin Community Games got underway recently, starting with the chess finals. Local teams travelled from Skerries, Malahide and Portmarnock to Jobstown to take part in the Under 12 and Under 16 competitions. The hall was packed to capacity with participants and their coaches, along with parents, families and friends offering their support. Playing in teams of
seven, each player looked to secure a win to carry their team closer to the next round. The U12 competition saw five teams vying for a place at the Leinster finals, where they would represent Dublin. A number of close games went to the wire, but it was three local teams that triumphed; Malahide won gold, with silver going to Skerries. Fourth place medals went to Portmarnock. Two local teams emerged triumphant in the U16 competition, which saw some intense games being played. Malahide retained their 2014 title and again returned home with gold and Skerries took silver, in just their second year in the competition.

McGuire Calls For Public Seating In Donabate Local councillor, Gerry McGuire (Lab) is calling for seating to be put in place in Donabate, which can be used by local residents and visitors alike, while enjoying the village centre. McGuire outlined to the County Leader that there are a number of key locations, where seating could be put in place. “The Hand area is one that would be an appropriate location, where people can view the main shopping area, and enjoy the comings and goings in the village. Other areas that should be considered, include the area outside the Church and at the bus stop. People could use this area to meet friends after going to Church or after visiting the local shops. Seating would also encourage people to spend more time in the village, thus making their visit more enjoyable,” he said. McGuire spoke about other towns and villages in the region, where proper seating has made a significant difference to residents and visitors alike. “Donabate has a railway station, which attracts visitors to the village, and I feel that the provision of seating at key areas, would go a long way to creating a favourable impression on them, as well as on our own residents. I am now calling on the Council to put measures in place to facilitate this,” he said.

Ridgewood is a busy estate, with shops, including a Tesco Express, which attracts a lot of traffic into the area. Previously there had been a speed ramp in the area, which was removed by the developer. What I would like to see happening is the County Council asking the opinion of residents, on whether they would like to see a speed ramp reinstated in the area. There is an ongoing fear among residents that, as things are at the moment, a fatality is a real possibility,” Independent local election candidate Sinnott continued, “I have been for Swords Ward, Justin Sinnott, is contacted by parents of young families, calling on the County Council to provide who use the green area in the estate for the safety of residents in and are fearful that cars won’t slow Ridgewood estate in Swords, by down, unless a speed ramp is put in putting in ramps to counter cars place. County Mayor Gives Students Seminar in Swords County Mayor, Kieran Dennison (FG), gave transition students from Fingal Community College in Swords a fantastic presentation about his work as mayor, at the County Council buildings recently. The seminar gave students an insight to the life of the County Mayor, from how he tackles any problems which come his way, to what his work involves in the lead up to this year’s election. Presented in the County Council’s chamber rooms, the talk offered students the opportunity to ask Cllr Dennison any questions they may have about what his job as mayor entails. During the
talk the Mayor also spoke to the students about future plans to bring in new regulations to ensure at least a third of each political party were female and was impressed to hear the school council at Fingal Community College is mainly made up of females. Dennison went on to encourage the students to ask any politicians knocking at their front door in the build up to the local elections,
why they should get their parents votes. “Over the next few weeks you may have politicians coming to your front door and I want each of you to ask them why your mum and dad should vote for them this year,” he told the students. “You may be voting in the next few years, so it’s a great idea to start becoming familiar with the process now.”

Continued from page 1 good for our country, The fact that Swords based Daly was such a central figure in the unfolding drama, that is set to have far reaching consequences in how gardai conduct their business, will also demonstrate that local politicians, who are not part of the mainstream political parties can have a profound effect on national issues. Furthermore, in the Dail last Wednesday, Daly was again to the forefront, as she led the calls for the resignation of Justice Minister, Alan Shatter. This followed the apology by the Minister, to the two whistleblowers at the centre of the storm. She said that, to have mishandled one case was unfortunate, to have mishandled two cases was carelessness, but to have mishandled, three, four, five, six and seven cases means that it’s time for you to go,” she bellowed at the stricken Minister. Her contributions have been acknowledged by many in the North County, including Fianna Fail senator, Darragh O’Brien, who praised her doggedness in pursuing this issue. He told the County Leader, “There is no doubt that Clare played a pivotal role in this affair. What is most unfortunate is
the way she i m m e n s e and others, respect for including my members of the own party Gardai, and I leader, Michéal deal with them Martin have on a daily basis. been treated These gardai by Minister Sen. O’Brien put their lives Shatter. I have on the line for us, and
it’s a pity that Minister Shatter has brought their morale to a new low, because this matter was not dealt with by him. I agree with Clare Daly that he should go,” concluded O’Brien.

The new ‘It makes cents to park here’ initiative hopes to raise a significant amount of funds for the DAA’s three charities of the year. Five cent from all car park bookings for Block C of the Terminal 1 multi-storey car park, whether made in advance online or in person at the gate, will in future be donated to the DAA charity programme. Q:
We asked local residents, was the Garda Commissioner right to resign following the whistleblower controversy?
Emily Nicholas
Liam Cooney, Ballyboughal ‘Yes he was right to resign. It’s not other people’s business to interfere. Policing should be left as policing, there are just too many busy bodies.’
Michael Dore, Portrane ‘No I don’t. He’s sneaking away so he doesn’t have to apologise. There’s something very dodgy going on.’
Liam Herron, Swords ‘Probably, especially taking his family into consideration and given the pressure he’s under and he came up with the wrong word. I have a bit of sympathy for him under the circumstances but there you are, that’s politics.’
Reggie Kearns, Swords ‘Yes I do think he should have resigned. When you look at everything that’s coming out now, he wasn’t doing his job overall. When you see so much going on and the lack of communication in his position he should have been on top of all that. The only thing I worry about politically is that he’s taken a fall for the Minister for Justice Shatter and that’s not right either. I think Shatter should step down.’
Cathal Byrne, Donabate ‘No I don’t think he should have resigned. I think his whole attitude stands to be questioned, he’s not living in the 21st century. He’s obligated to inform the general public and he’s obligated to his own force. There are items which need to be addressed and they need to open his case up.’

Call For End To Hazardous Parking In Swords Local councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has highlighted a potentially hazardous situation in Swords, which is impacting on residents in a town centre apartment block. Butler told the County Leader, that weekend parking on Well Road in Swords has the potential to cause a serious accident, with serious consequences. He said, “I have been contacted by residents of Cooldriona Court, on Well Road, which links Main Street, with Church Road in the town. This is a narrow road, with double yellow lines, but people accessing shops on Main Street, feel free to park there, especially on Sundays, when there are no traffic wardens on duty,” he said. “This poses a problem for residents of Cooldriona Court, who do not have sufficient space to reverse out of their car park onto the road. Another problem that this causes, is for people from the Brackenstown area of the town, who use this road, on foot, to shop at the Pavilions. There simply is no space for them to
Marie Giffney, Swords ‘Yes I do think he should have resigned because he must have been aware of the phone tapping. He couldn’t have not been aware of it going on and been the commissioner for all these years and I think Shatter should be gone. I can’t understand how he’s still there, I think it’s disgraceful I really do. If Enda Kenny does not get rid of him the whole government will fall.’
Margaret Flynn, Swords ‘Yes I do think he should have resigned. If he’d have just apologised in the first place none of this would have happened at all.’
Joe Geoghegan, Swords ‘Yes I do indeed. Because an awful lot has to do with the tapping of the phones, especially with the court proceedings and especially because a solicitor was actually on to a client in prison and were being overheard through taping the phone calls. That’s against the law, there’s no privacy there. What’s going to happen now is it’s all going to kick back on the government over court proceedings and everything.’

Christina Chisholm, Balbriggan ‘Yes I do, I don’t think he was right in what he said. He made a mistake and he should have resigned.’
Patti Fitzsimons, Swords ‘I think he was definitely right to resign but I expected more from him before he did. He should have apologised to the public without having to be asked by anybody.’

Duffy Calls For Election Poster Ban In Swords Local Green Party election candidate for the Swords Electoral Ward, Ken Duffy, is calling for a commitment from all candidates not to place posters on Swords Main Street in the run up to the Local and European Elections on Ken Duffy May 23rd. He told the County Leader: “The blitz of posters competing for space, one on top of the other on electricity and telephone poles is very unsightly. A bylaw should be introduced stating that each candidate be restricted to one poster only per pole.” “Swords Tidy Towns and the County Council work hard throughout the year to keep our streets visually pleasing, and this sudden explosion of
election posters is an attack on our visual senses. In previous elections residents and Tidy Towns groups have requested their candidates not to place posters on Main Streets. In some parts of the country it was taken up, unfortunately that has yet to happen in Swords,” he explained. “Election posters can also be dangerous to the general public on a busy Main Street if hung too low, or if blown free by the wind.” Duffy continued: “Surely with all the electronic means of communication at our disposal today through the internet and social media, this largely obviates the need for posters? I am not calling for a total ban, a little colour to create awareness of an election adds to the occasion. I am merely suggesting that in certain areas when it comes to postering, that common sense should prevail.” “A voluntary ban would require an agreement from all candidates. I would be very interested in hearing from candidates running in the Swords Ward to see if we can all come to an understanding on a poster free Main Street,” he concluded.

Hickey’s Pharmacy celebrates launch of Haven Pharmacy Pictured here is Swords Lions Treasurer, John Boylan and President Maurice Kealy, with Fingal Bereved by Suicide Support Services, Chairperson Ellen O’Brien, Treasurer Brian Kinsella, and Carmel Condon.
Swords Lions Club Aids Suicide Support Training Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support Service has received a donation of €2,400 from Swords and District Lions Club, which will fund the training of a second new group of 16 volunteers, who have just started their course. The suicide support service is a voluntary community service set up two years ago, guided by Fingal Counselling Service, in response to the increasing demand for support to individuals and families bereaved by suicide. The volunteers are trained to listen and provide support.
They also visit families in their homes at the request of the family. Fingal Counselling Service, in the BASE centre in Brackenstown in Swords, had been approached by Fingal Leader Partnership and the HSE Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Officer to train and support such a group of volunteers, thus the Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support Service was born. According to the group, in Ireland today, more people die by suicide than by heart attacks or in road traffic accidents. “Research suggests that every suicide touches the lives of up to 100 people. Swords and the surrounding areas are experiencing an increase in the numbers bereaved by suicide,” said Maurice Kealy of Swords Lions Club.

The judges were impressed by the fact the airport has created a highly engaging presence with a distinctly Irish feel across a range of different social media networks. This is the fourth award that Dublin Airport has won for its social media activities over the past two years, as it also won last year’s ILTA Communications Award, a Moodies Award for the world’s best airport Twitter account and a Business to Arts Award for its use of social media to promote its sponsorship of the Dublin Theatre Festival. “We are delighted to have won the Communications category at the ILTAs for the second year running for Dublin Airport’s use of social media,” said DAA’s Chief Communications Officer, Paul O’Kane told the County Leader. “Dublin Airport more than doubled its Twitter followers last year we continued to generate very high levels of interaction and engagement with our audience across a range of social networks,” he said.
- Ireland’s biggest co-operative pharmacy brand makes newest launch at Main Street, Rush - Haven Pharmacy is the new name for the country’s leading, fastest growing pharmacy group Hickey’s Pharmacy Main Street, Rush has introduced new health services, offers, promotions and a vibrant new store to mark the launch of Haven Pharmacy. Haven Pharmacy is the new brand created by 45 members of the co-operative group which has community pharmacies all over Ireland, with over 100 pharmacists and 300 staff. Hickey’s, who has been a member of the group for the last six years, will be one of the first pharmacies to rebrand inside and out offering a new and diverse range of products, services, health screenings, offers and a unique and interactive store experience for the local community. “We’ve been together as a highly successful co-operative group for a number of years now, sharing knowledge, best practice, latest thinking and buying power” said owner, pharmacist Jason Doherty. “It’s been working so well that we started to look at ways of how we could offer the benefits of our knowledge and expertise to consumers - and create a brand that they could consistently recognise no matter where they were in the country. “Our first step was to find out what today’s consumers want – starting with our own customers” said Jason. The launch of Haven Pharmacy has been developed in response to research conducted by Behaviours and Attitudes in Feb 2011 and more recently in September 2013 - which highlighted that consumers were looking for a different type of pharmacy experience. The research showed that - in a market of increased self care and self medication - the relationship between the consumer and the pharmacist is becoming even more important with the consumer demanding more interaction from their pharmacist and the latest and most expert health care advice. Research also showed that community pharmacists are regarded as the most accessible healthcare experts in primary care –which bodes well for Haven Pharmacy which is already the leading community pharmacy group in Ireland.
Haven Pharmacy has been designed to appeal to the local consumer, with local needs – but who will also be able to benefit from the shared knowledge, services and value offered be being part of a national network. “We are retaining all the very best of what we have at Hickeys with some great new enhancements including more health screenings, outreach talks in the local community, regular health talks in store, special offers and promotions tailored specifically for our customers and a dynamic and refreshing new store environment” said Jason. “We are already recognised within the industry as leaders in expert, healthcare advice, our dispensing business is one of the highest in the country and the depth and scope of our knowledge is significant. The launch of Haven Pharmacy is about making people more aware of this – the length and breadth of the country. I am really looking forward to the times ahead” said Jason. The Haven Pharmacy brand roll-out will continue across the country over the next couple of months with each of the 100 pharmacists managing the rebranding change.

In all matters recently you’ve been cautious perhaps overly so. However, you now question your approach and develop a more inventive outlook, which introduces ideas as stimulating as they could be disruptive.
primarily always hard working organisations which deserve positive attention. These charities rely on the good will of the public in order to survive as more often than not, government funding is just not sufficient. With this in mind, what better way to get involved fundraising than participating in the biggest charity event of the year, the Women’s Flora Mini Marathon. This 10k women’s race is the most significant charity event of the year and without it, some outstanding charities would struggle to provide their services to those who need it the most. So, don’t wait around, apply today and become a
part of this outstanding event. Taking place on the 2nd of June this year, the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest event of it’s kind, with thousands of women taking to the streets on Bank Holiday Monday to help raise funds for many super charities around the North County and throughout Ireland. The event started in 1983 and has since had 780,000 women enter, now making it the biggest single day event in the country. Not only do participating women benefit health wise, but they will also help raise a remarkable amount of money for their chosen charities. It is estimated that in 2013,
31.03.2014
thanks to all those women taking part in the event, an unbelievable €12m was raised, bringing the total since the race started up to €137m. It really is an amazing event which can help many charities continue on with the sterling work they are doing. It would be fantastic to raise the same amount or higher this year, so ladies, why not get involved in 2014. Pick a charity, enlist the support of your friends and family and provide your cause with the funds they so desperately need. Many women will have no charity in mind when applying
to participate in the Flora women’s marathon. These women are extremely keen to be a part of the event, but may struggle to choose the right charity to raise money for. However, the North County has many prominent charities, which will benefit

immensely from your donations, big or small. These charities offer so many excellent services in the North County but can only remain afloat thanks your help. So,
once you’ve applied to take part in this year’s marathon, take a look at some of the charities on this page and contact your chosen one as soon as you can. Many charities will need you to register with them in order for you to donate once you have completed the
race, so making contact with them sooner rather than later is a great idea. Contact details can be found on this page, so remember that every euro counts.
The marathon is an ideal way to donate to a fantastic cause and get fit at the same time. Many who want to do something for charity, often struggle to find an activity to participate in, so by taking part in the mini marathon, you’re killing two birds with the one stone, and taking part in an event that thousands get behind every year. Not only is the women’s mini marathon a great way of raising money for charity, but it can also be a fun day out for everyone involved. Many women taking part don brilliant fancy dress outfits to run in, making for quite the sight as they all pass through the streets of Dublin city
centre. So if you have applied to participate in this years event, suggest to your running partners a group fancy dress idea to give your friends and family on
the sidelines a good laugh as you run by them. It is also very common for women to label themselves with their chosen charity. Be sure to do
this as well, so onlookers know exactly what cause you’re running for. You may select a charity based on it supporting an interest or activity that is common with your own life. It may be that following the loss of a family member you may gravitate towards a particular cause, or you may have an interest that you may wish to help protect and preserve. There are many charities out there and for the most part they are all above board. One way to ensure that your money goes to the cause that you want it to go towards, is to check if the charity is officially registered. You may decide to support a local charity that is not registered but you know the people involved and that may be a great choice for

you. If in doubt, check the registration number. Some charities may have a campaign or drive that may interest you. If you want to find out about campaigns that charities are running simply ring them and ask! If you like them then you can support something that is motivating to you to raise money. Giving is a wonderful experience and whichever charity you decide upon will be delighted by your support. Your money will go a long way to help charities provide the services to people or causes in need. Just follow your heart and you will make a great decision!

Balbriggan, Skerries, Donabate and District and Howth-Sutton Credit Unions have come together as a cohesive unit under the banner of Progressive Credit Union and the immediate benefits of this merger were explained by Brian Howard, Marketing & Development Officer of Progressive Credit Union. “Progressive Credit Union was created after the merger of Balbriggan, Skerries and Donabate Credit Unions, which happened in January last year, and was officially renamed as Progressive Credit Union in January of this year. Then, in March this year, the transfer of Howth/Sutton Credit Union, means that we now have four offices in the North County region. Our trading slogan is ‘Together We Are Better’ which effectively means that we can now offer a lot more services, as a result of this merger.”
Progressive Credit Union now has offices in the above locations and employs roughly 35 staff. It is governed by 11 directors and three individuals on the Board Oversight Committee. Skerries welfare and wages direct to your account and the ever popular members car draw. Online banking went live on 25th February 2014. Since then there has been a very large interest in growth in members availing of this new service. With the online banking system, members can make payments to their inter nal account in the credit union, and also external payments and transfers to bank accounts, household bills and mortgage payments. Any kind of change can be very unsettling for members, who had questions to ask about the merger, and Progressive Credit Union is well aware of this. In an effort to reassure members, Brian Howard was quick to allay any lingering doubts or fears of members. He said,

Howth - Sutton The immediate reaction of members is a very positive one, with many expressing their satisfaction with the new, enhanced services. Indeed the advent of these services was sufficient to encourage long-time Balbriggan member, Alan Marrey to express his delight. He was the first member of the newly merged credit union to avail of online banking, when it was introduced on 25th February last. He said: “In February of this year, I transferred my bank account to the Progressive Credit Union and have availed of the new online banking system. I can now have my wages paid directly in to my account, pay
my bills from the same account, have access to set up payments and view my transactions at my own convenience.” He continued, “My wife has also since availed of the new service, which we have both found very easy to set up and use. We will also be availing of the new debit card that is planned to be introduced to the service over the coming weeks, which means we will have all the financial services we require through Progressive Credit Union.” “The changeover to the facilities offered by Progressive Credit Union, was very smooth
and hassle free, thanks to their staff. They were very helpful and friendly in assisting us and answering any questions we had regarding the new services now provided,” he said. Progressive Credit Union’s new logo is the Martello Tower, which is representative of the new common bond that each branch possesses, namely their coastal location. It is abundantly clear that the choice of name for this new, dynamic credit union, was no accident. It is a truly progressive entity, that is destined to have a hugely beneficial impact on it’s members and on the future of banking in the North County.
“We want to reassure our members that with the merger of the four Credit Unions that all offices are safe and secure and that a l l f a c i l i t i e s w i l l re m a i n a v a i l a b l e t o members, with the addition of many new services.” “The merger has strengthened the stability of our branches/offices and we would like to inform members that Progressive Credit Union is still providing loans and looking after the needs of their members, as before. We are always available to discuss members borrowing options and individual needs.” “Our traditional loan purposes, such as home improvement, special rate car loan and within shares loan are still available and as popular as always,” he said. The all-important members’ car draw has also been retained and is available at all f o u r b r a n c h e s . “ We a re o ff e r i n g a n increased number of cars which makes it as fair as possible for all, with the next one in May,” explained Brian. “Although some procedures have changed due to the nature of all banking requirements, we are providing loans and lending as we always have for our members’ needs and we assure our members that we are here if they need to discuss borrowing options.”

Spring is in the air and the sun is starting to poke its head out, so what better time to start dusting away the winter cobwebs and putting some love back in to your home. The cold winter months are finally beginning to shift and with that comes a great chance to spruce up the inside and outside of your abode. So, with a little bit of hard work and a touch of tender loving care, your home could be brought back to its former glory.
Living Room During Springtime, your living room should have a lot of space. Therefore, get those old books and magazines out. The carpet may be dark and dirty after the winter, so its best to get a new one in the colour you would prefer. It is, however, advisable to leave it very bright and warm coloured. This
would create a strong sense of Spring and would surely make you feel happier. If there is old furniture that takes up lots of space, replace it with something smaller and brighter. Don’t forget, a living room is a place for resting, keep it as open as possible.
Bedroom We all have those times, even during Spring, when we don’t feel like going anywhere and just want to spend a lazy day in our room. Replace the old heavy curtains with light blinds, which would make your room seem bigger. You don’t have to get rid of the winter blinds, just store them. Also, throw some colourful pillows on your bed. After the long cold winter, your walls might need to be repainted, so you can pick the colour and go ahead with it. Include all of the family members, and apart from the work being done much quicker, you will also have a load of fun. You can also get rid of those old clothes that you haven’t worn for few seasons now, and leave all that space for new dresses and shirts that you will get this Spring.

small start on it. If you take things one step at a time you will be surprised how fast you can get things done. Once one project is done it’s time to start on a new one. Planning and preparation is very important, so make a plan and stick to it. There is nothing better than to relax in your own home after a good job has been done. children with storage boxes and shelves to store toys, games and other things they should put away once play time is over. Make this a part of the bedtime routine. Just before it’s time to brush their teeth or tell them a bed time story. It’s easy to give children’s bedrooms make overs. Changing curtains, light shades and duvets covers which include your children’s favourite characters can be very easy and also expensive. If you decide you’re
going to change things in your children’s rooms and can’t do it all at once try adding a new feature each week and telling your little darlings this is a reward for them helping to keep all their toys and belongings stored. Another great idea is for you to decorate your children’s room with their art work and family photos.
Use Time Wisely Whatever you decide is the priority that needs your attention make a
Regular Maintenance And Repairs Walk around your home and make a list of all the little things that are broken or in need of repair. Individually, small repairs might not seem important, but if every room has just one thing wrong,
those small things will add up to create the impression that your home has been neglected. If you don’t feel comfortable tackling the repairs yourself, hire a handyman for a day and watch your “to do” list disappear. Staying on top of maintenance today eliminates problems down the road should you decide to sell.

conditions outdoors. If you have older carpets in your home, they might be hiding contaminants and allergens. The first step to determine if these need replacing is to hire a professional company

easier to keep clean, don’t hold odours, give your home an updated look and, in general, are more appealing to buyers. The old adage that you only get one shot at a first impression is true. So, make the interior of you home shine from the moment someone walks through the door. Even if you clean your home regularly, there are nooks and crannies that you may miss or overlook. Let a cleaning service do the dirty work to really make your home sparkle.
Spruce Up Your Ceilings One of a room’s most
neglected spaces, the ceiling, makes up onesixth of a room’s total area. Updating your home’s ceilings will net
a lot of bang for the buck while adding archit e c t u r a l interest. Firstly, if you still have popcorn ceilings, hire a contractor to scrape them smooth. To add a sophisticated custom look to a smooth ceiling, install crown moulding or box beams for a cool look. Ceiling millwork, an attractive feature prevalent in older homes, is rarely found in newer construction. Adding small touches
like these will help your home stand out from the pack.
Save On Air Conditioning Costs Consider installing a whole-house fan. They’re a great alternative to air conditioning
because they use only one-tenth of the electricity of air conditioners, saving you money. Whole-house fans are considered a “green” home improvement, which is a popular selling feature with today’s homebuyers. As the cost of electricity continues to skyrocket, green energy alternatives will only gain in popularity.

feel much larger. Another bonus is that modern doors are energy-efficient, cutting
down on heating and cooling costs. That means more cash in your pocket now and a
financial bonus should you decide to sell.
Refresh The Exterior Paint The condition of your home’s exterior is key to the overall appeal, so refresh that facade with a coat of paint. Fresh exterior paint will not only preserve and protect your home’s exterior siding — the right paint colour can make a dull home dazzling. By the same token, a house painted with an overly bright or overly bland colour will make a house less appealing and hurt the value, so choose your colours wisely. Should you decide to put your house on the market and the exterior paint looks bad, a buyer will assume that the interior of the home has been neglected too and drive right past.

Flowers A clean sweep means you can freshen the soil, add lots of muck and start again – even just enough time to get new bulbs in too. Consider the orientation and available light, and then get to work on colour. Play with colour, heights, flowering seasons and throw in your interests such as grasses, or bee and butterfly friendly plants. Vernal gardens are marvellous for a northfacing bed as they are in full kick in winter and spring and can then get quieter and go over to ferns and the like.

route to creating a new look by managing mangled and overgrown shrubs and trees. And you have other options – why not plant a tree, a big beautiful one, and add a new dynamic to your garden? Think about whether your trees and shrubs are compatible – try to create a look that has coherence. Ask yourself if you have a favourite place you’d like to emulate. What are the most evocative planting combinations for you? Consider the usual and infinitely affecting choices for seasonal change; colour, blossom, fruits and berries, leaf shapes and textures, and then create your new look.

Conservatories And Extensions So your home has everything you need apart from a decent space to entertain guests or even relax after a hard day. Maybe an extension or conservatory is an idea worth looking into. This additional space could give your house a new lease of life and that little bit of extra space you desire. If you want your kitchen to have extra space to dine in, choose one of the wide range of conservatories out there to enhance the space.
Boundaries First port of call: what are the boundaries and do you like them? Look out of each window and consider what meets the eye. Does it do justice to your interior and your sense of aesthetic value? If it is a solid but ugly boundary such as a wall or a sturdy fence, then it can be spruced up, using some imagination, in something more evocative. Try bundles of tall hazel rods sewn together with rough manila rope. Alternatively you could spray your fencing a deep graphite grey or a chalky ointment pink and bounce some light back into a dreary corner.

Louise Kennedy’s latest Spring Summer 2014 collection is a celebration of modern femininity, with sleek tailoring, vivid colour hues, delicate lace and unexpected details. It brings together a contemporary collection, inspired by the fusion of subtle and vibrant colours with a nod to images collated from Louise’s recent travels to Morocco. Renowned for her ability to design clothes that complement the female silhouette, the latest Louise Kennedy collection continues to celebrate the modern woman who emulates classic style. Pictured here is top Irish model Irma Maliaukaite, who wears a stunning Emiko Tangerine / fuchsia pink column dress.
