as representatives of Action Ireland Trust also included a photographic exhibition by the students of Hlalele High School Lesotho and Portmarnock Community School. The event also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Lesotho’s independence from Britain in 1966. Keynote speakers included Minister of State at Department of Foreign Affairs, Joe McHugh and HE Paramenete Phamotse, Lesotho ambassador to Ireland. Acting County Mayor, Cllr Brian McDonagh was present, as were Eithne Deeney, Principal of Portmarnock Community School, Stephen Peppard from Fingal County Council and Fran Whelan from Action Ireland Trust. County Council have taken up the mantel in terms of delivering development opportunities within the kingdom of Lesotho, including health, education and key infrastructural services. The County Council have partnered with Action Ireland Trust to put in place a plan-

Local senator, Dr James Reilly (FG) has confirmed that Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone has agreed to meet residents who live near Oberstown Youth Detention Centre in the next few days. This comes after he appealed to the Minister to ‘Act Now’ as reported in last week’s edition of this newspaper. He told the County Leader, “I wrote to the Minister, Katherine Zappone on a couple of occasions and then raised the matter in the Seanad, as regards to what was happening at Oberstown. The recent spate of violent incidents involving inmates, which led to serious injuries to staff members needed to be addressed.” “The good news is that the Minister has agreed to meet the residents committee at her office in Dail Eireann on Thursday,

By Patrick Finnegan 20th October at 5pm. This has been warmly welcomed by Dr Reilly, who lives near the detention centre. “I’m very grateful for this offer from the Minister and I think it’s important that the concerns of the residents are heard. If I could put it in a nutshell, what people want is to know that they are going to be safe in their own homes, that their children will be safe, that the young offenders and staff can also be safe in their environ-

ment. Also the investment of the tax payers in this facility will also be protected,” he said. The committee will expect to have their concerns listened to and assurances given by the Minister that she will respect their concerns. “This facility has been a source of employment for many people in the area over the

Senator James Reilly

years, but it’s only fair to say that young offenders, some of whom are very challenging, need to face

sanctions should they persist in reoffending. Above all this is a rehabilitation centre, where young offenders can be educated and rehabilitated to give them a second chance at life.” When asked what he thought the problem at the centre is, he felt there was a need for a tiered system and approach by those

who are embracing the system and the services that are there, and those who repeatedly refuse to embrace this and are violent and aggressive, should be kept in a more secure unit with slightly less liberal regime. There needs to be consequences for this kind of behaviour, with privileges denied,” he concluded.

Local Communities Come Out In Force

A very large crowd assembled at a public meeting in Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Club on Wednesday last, 5th October, where concerned residents who will be affected by the proposed new runway at Dublin Airport gathered to express their concerns. Pat Suttle of Portmarnock Community Association spoke to the County Leader about what he expected from the meeting. “The important thing is that we are not trying to stop the runway. We’re in favour of jobs at

Dublin Airport and we want the airlines to develop, but we want to ensure that the residents who live around the airport are properly treated in terms of noise mitigation and limiting the night time flying,” he said. Liam Curran from River Valley / Rathingle Residents Association said, “We had a very favourable meeting with Minister Shane Ross and we are looking for the retention of conditions 3 and 5 of the planning permission. We’re not anti runway, we’re pro jobs and we’re not political. It’s just an alignment of all of the relevant associations and groups that are going to be affected by the proposed new runway and we fall under the umbrella group of FORUM (Fingal Organised Residents United Movement). Pat Suttle continued, “The Minister said that the An Bord Pleanala ruling doesn’t apply, but the minister can’t tell anyone how the law is to be applied. Ultimately, I think this will end up in the courts, as to how the EU directive versus An Bord Pleanala pans out, so it all remains to be seen how this develops,” he said. Local TD, Darragh O’Brien, who attended the meeting said, “I was delighted to be

present and speak at such a well organised and well attended meeting of the FORUM in Portmarnock. The airport is a crucial economic driver in our area and for our country. Thousands of people are employed directly and indirectly through the airport and the businesses located there. I have always supported the develop-

ment and expansion of the airport and indeed the need for the new runway. However these developments need to be delivered in a balanced way that respects the rights of the communities who live in proximity to the airport. I do not support the removal of the two planning conditions set down in 2007 by An Bord

05

Pleanala, which restrict night flights and will keep aircraft noise to a minimum. The recent announcement by this Government that the Irish Aviation Authority will now be given the powers to completely disregard these conditions is completely unacceptable. I will do everything in my power to support the FORUM in their campaign for fairness and balanced airport development.”

On Thursday, 20th October, credit unions all around the North County will join other communities around the world to celebrate International Credit Union Day and the role they play in improving the communities they serve and the lives of their members. Credit unions are founded by the local community themselves and this has set them apart from other financial institutions for more than 150 years. International Credit Union Day is an annual international celebration of the Credit Union and the part it plays in the improvement of communities and the lives of members. Since 1948, the day has been celebrated internationally every October. Credit unions are unique because they are not-forprofit, democratically controlled by a board of directors and a board

oversight committee, and they are a member-owned co-operative. Credit unions pool their members’ assets to provide low-cost loans and other financial services in the best interest of the members. Being an institute that is founded and owned by the local community, they continue to provide funding to many community groups and societies.

They are delighted to be able to contribute to these groups that continue to promote pride in local towns and community spirit without which, these Credit Unions would not have been formed. Your local Credit Union offers an array of quality services, advice and solutions in a way that makes them most unique. Big or small, all your needs will be met. Your local credit union is right at the heart of your community and will offer you a personal service and any advice you need on various savings, loans or insurance schemes that they have on offer. that you are in control of your own finances. For those of you who may not yet be a member of these quality establishments, keep reading to see exactly why you should join your local Credit Union today.

What Is A Credit Union? A Credit Union is a group of people who save together and lend to each other at a fair and reasonable rate of interest. Credit Unions are non-sectarian and non-political, nonprofit and continue that Irish tradition of co-operative self help. They offer members the chance to have control over their own finances, by making their own savings work for them. When you become a member and start saving with them, you will have access to fair and reasonable rates on savings and loans. The Credit Union exists only to serve its members — not to profit from their needs.

How Does A Credit Union Differ From A Bank? A Credit Union acts just like a bank, providing all of the same services: checking, savings, mortgage lending, car loans, business loans and more. The one distinguishing factor is that Credit Unions are non-profit institutions. They are not beholden to shareholders, so when they make a profit, they don’t give that to shareholders. Instead, they return that profit to members in the form of lower fees and better services.

Fun At St Maur’s GAA Club

Pictured having fun at one of the recent events at St Maur's GAA Club in Rush are Kellie Carthy, Orlaith Heffernan, Tara Brady, Ella O'Connell and Lucia Rehmann

It was a very busy few weeks for St Maur’s GAA Club in Rush recently, with plenty of activity for all members, but especially the children. First up was the Cúl Kids Campout, which was a fantastic day and night event where club members were invited to camp out overnight on the club training pitch. The day kicked off with a treasure hunt for the kids while the adults attempted to pitch the tents. This was followed

by a number of mini matches for the kids, followed by a Puc Fada competition and a penalty shoot out. Another fun event was the All-Ireland MiniLeagues. This is already an established annual event run by the Juvenile Committee and was held for three evenings in the week before the AllIreland final. Both events required a lot of organisation and supervision and it’s a credit to the mentors and

parents of St. Maur’s who were always on hand to help out. St.

Maur’s has teams to cater for all age groups from the four year old academy kids, to their three senior men’s teams, ladies senior team and the Gaelic for

09

Mothers & Others for the ‘slightly older’ ladies each age group was well represented in both events with some of the older players proving to be the biggest kids.

Call For Elderly To Be Looked After Local senator, Dr James Reilly is appealing to the Ministers for Finance and Public Expenditure to look after elderly people in the Budget. He told the County Leader, “Elderly people who shared the burden of the downturn need to be looked after in the upcoming budget. Many of these people who live here in the North County are on a fixed income, without the capacity to increase their earnings. They are faced with a pension levy and prescription charges, with many of them on medication.” He continued, “They’ve had the telephone allowance withdrawn and the VHI and tax allowance. All these things were necessary at a time when the country was on its knees, but now that there is a very visible upturn in the economy, it’s now time to have the sacrifice of these people acknowledged and some of the cuts reversed. I’m calling for a reduction in the prescription charge and I’m calling on Minister Varadkar to reinstate the telephone allowance. This is particularly important for many of our elderly rural dwellers, who can feel isolated, where a telephone is essential to keep in touch. It is vital for their mental well-being and health. This can also apply to residents in urban areas as well,” he concluded.

Even though it’s only mid-October, many people are starting to think ahead to Christmas and are deep in the planning process for the great event. They are looking at their spending options and how they need to get those niggly jobs done around the house, so they have their Christmas home just perfect. The summer spending is done, the back to schools expenses are out of the way and now is the time to start getting a few jobs done around the house that you’ve been putting on the long finger since the beginning of the year. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut at this time of year, but working on home improvements is a great way to stay active, whilst improving your living space, and not having to worry about the upcoming festive season.

The North County has everything you need to get your home ready for Christmas, but another bonus is the fact that other retail areas are within easy reach, due to the presence of the M1 motorway and other top class roads, thus opening up a number of wonderful choices and options for local shoppers.

With Christmas firmly on the horizon, replacing worn carpet is a simple

way to instantly increase the comfort in your home. Threadbare carpet loses its colour and warmth, but the replacement process doesn’t actually take too long. Hardwood or laminate floors can be instantly lifted by rugs or mats, and can also be used to hide scratch marks too.

WINDOWS If your home or windows are older than 15 years old, it is probably time to replace

your windows, or at least check that they are working correctly. If your windows are single pane, let considerable noise in, leak water or let draft in, it is time to consider replacing them. Not only will this increase your energy efficiency, but it will decrease utility bills and give you an opportunity to replace mismatched, or dated windows with some that are more aesthetically pleasing, or in keeping with the style of your home.

CURTAINS New curtains are a great way to update a room. Many houses have plain walls and floors, so curtains are an opportunity to add some life to a time-worn room. Choose a rich texture or bold pattern if you’re feeling brave, or a smaller pattern generally works in every room, but both will instantly lift the mood. When choosing a curtain, long curtains that reach the floor always look better than the shorter versions. If there is a radiator and you wish to fit longer curtains, install a roller blind in the window as well - this can be pulled down for privacy, and when the room is heated the curtains can be drawn, leaving the room nice and warm. Curtains are also a great opportunity to save money on your heating costs - try a curtain with a thermal lining, or get your existing curtains

COLOUR Neutral coloured walls can be brightened with a simple coat of paint. Repainting in the winter is a great time to liven things up, and a new coat of paint can drastically improve the mood of an entire room. For a cosy feel, try warm autumnal colours, such as rusty orange or mustard yellow, or rich jewel tones. Complement these colours with accessories or textiles of the same colour and your room will feel warmer and welcoming in no time.

BATHROOM Bathrooms are probably one of the easiest rooms to

make a big improvement on, without great cost. Newly painted walls will dramatically lift the mood of the room, but re-grouting and replacing taps and plugs also makes a big difference and are generally pretty easy to do. Larger projects, such as replacing floors, tile and showers will need professional help and will be more costly, but there are plenty of specialist in the

Student Exchange Week At Balbriggan School The week of 26th to 30th September has finally come and gone when Balbriggan Community College was awash with colour. The school welcomed with aplomb its European cousins on

their annual Exchange visit. The school welcomed 13 students from St. Wendel, Saarland, Germany. The brain child of the Balbriggan Town Council, the European Exchange is regarded

as an important whole school/departmental event in the school calendar. It’s an example of the collegial supportive family that is the foundation of Balbriggan Community College. For example,

the Woodwork department crafted a welcome signpost. Transition year students painted it in their Art class. And that’s just the start of it. The word “Freundschaft” (“Friendship”) was

chosen for the sign as it forms the basis of the connection between Balbriggan and St. Wendel and indeed the school community itself. “The aim of the Exchange Programme is to give students, their families and staff an opportunity to enjoy

an extended cultural learning opportunity in a fun, safe, good value and welcoming atmosphere. The college is partnered with two neighbouring schools in St. Wendel, Saarland - Cusanus Gymnasium and Wendalinum Gymnasium. The German word

“Gymnasium” means “second level school”. The school community was delighted to welcome friends from far and wide. Such is the good humoured warmth and friendship extended to our visitors by our families and the school community that

13

the Germans compete to travel! The Balbriggan students look forward to our return visit in March 2017 when, as well as attending school, students will visit Saarbruecken and enjoy a day trip to France.”

Local Schools Among First To Offer New Subject Local Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell has welcomed the first phase of the roll-out of the ‘Politics & Society’ to Leaving Cert students, and is pleased that Malahide Community School and St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Rush are included in the first 41 schools nationwide to offer the subject. He said, “I am particularly pleased that Malahide Community School and St. Joseph’s Secondary

School, Rush are two of the very first schools to offer this subject. “As this subject continues to be rolled-out, the Department of Education and Skills aims to ensure all interested schools will be in a position to include the Politics & Society syllabus in the subject choices for the Leaving Certificate students by September 2018.” He continued, “I believe this subject will be benefi-

cial to all students who decide to study it. It will prepare our young people to become fully involved with wider society and to be informed of how our democracy works. I hope that it will encourage more young people to become involved with the political process, or to become advocates for the societal issues which they feel passionate about. “Supporting our young people, and encouraging them to engage with wider society, the political process and to voice their opinions and ensure their views are heard will be beneficial to our society as a whole. We must continue to invest in education, and ensure that our education system provides our children with skills that will assist them throughout their lives”, he concluuded.

It’s getting closer and closer to our favourite festive time of year, but that doesn’t mean that you necessarily have everything ready for that all important Christmas party. Fret not! You still have enough time to get everything organised if you start your preparation now. Remember, the party season is meant to be a time of fun, so follow our tips below to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. Remember the essentials; Venue, Food, Entertainment and that all important party dress. If you have at least these sorted out, you’ll be set for a night of fun.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS We are lucky to be spoilt for choice when it comes to party venues around the North County. There is an Aladdin’s Cave of festively decorated venues, nightlife and transport options, so you need look no further

for the perfect location for your party. There are plenty of local venues here in the North County, that are sure to serve all your party venue needs and plenty of them will have good Christmas deals on too. If you have a large group to book, make sure you give your venue of choice plenty of notice and book early to avoid disappointment. Many of the venues offer exclusive deals the earlier you book, so definitely keep an eye out for these.

BE ENTERTAINED Some hotels offer a great value packages such as ‘Dinner & Show’ or ‘B&B, Dinner & Show’. These packages can be a lovely way to spend your party an entire evening of fun, food and entertainment, along with a relaxing overnight stay in a hotel. Another option is to add some excitement is planning a themed night. Your choices are limitless from 60s/70s/80s themes, Winter

Wonderland, Black and White Ball, Casino Night, live comedy or some interactive entertainment. If your venue does not have in-house entertainment, consider booking a local DJ or live band.

There will be the season’s hottest festive trends in the shops around the North County, all encouraging you to get as glamourous as possible! Take full advantage of this: go shopping for a new dress, get a beauty treatment and brave those heels, even if your feet won’t thank you for it the next day! Christmas is only once a year, so why not make the most of it?

FESTIVE FOOD There’s no doubt about it, when it comes to that certain point at the party, everyone looks

forward to a bit of grub. Whether you like a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, or prefer to indulge in your favourite Asian cuisine, or even some lighter ‘party food’ your options are wide-ranging in the North County. Popular at many venues is a predinner ‘Winter Cocktail Hour’, offering seasonally appropriate drinks at reception, such as mulled wine, hot whiskey, or hot chocolate. The Penny Drops The Left may be set on a course for government in Germany but can they be stopped? The polls suggest a halt to the rise of the AfD, the far right party whose popularity has begun to stabilise. The AfD has eclipsed Mekel’s CDU in recent election contests. The decrease in the CDU’s performance opens the way for their current partners in Government, the SPD, to begin to look to the Greens to help then turn the direction of Government after the next election. That reality is reflected in the comments of a prominent CDU member who is quoted as saying, “If there is a public majority together with the AfD, then we [CDU] should form a coalition with them. Otherwise we are heading towards a left Republic,” So it seems that the more centralist position of Merkel may have to be sacrificed in an effort to hold onto power. This lurch to the right is in general reflected across all political theatres.” The crushing fall in the value of sterling is for the moment a temporary blip. We can expect to see

considerable highs and lows over the next two or three years, each triggered by the UK’s journey to exit the EU. Ms. May’s announcement last week seems to have caused the fall in sterling. Just as the referendum result caused the fall in the pound earlier in the year. It may be a case that currency tourism may be about to become a feature of By Cathal Boland everyday life. The EU-Canada trade agreement is about to be sent to Member States for ratification as our Senate here rejected the deal. The vote is not binding on the Government but it is one they would have preferred not to have happened. The EU has a lot going on right now with a number of complex trade talks open on many fronts along with the UK problem. So it was no surprise that the Belgian Trade Minister, who headed off to attend a Harvard Management Course was recalled to his desk by his PM. I wonder what was said on his return but hopefully the course adequately equipped him to deal with the fall out.

New Speed Limit Near Schools Welcomed Local senator, Dr James Reilly (FG), has welcomed the decision by Fingal County Council to reduce the speed limit near schools to 30 kilometres per hour. Reilly told the County Leader, “This decision was taken at a County Council meeting last Tuesday and is to be commended. It will come as a huge relief to many parents in the area and will be a valuable protection for our small children. There is

no question but that this will save lives. “I think it is very timely of Fingal County Council to implement the 30km speed limit near all schools in the county. I would like to see this speed limit being extended to all our housing estates where there are children present, particularly in a constituency with the youngest population in the state. A three-year-old darting out from between

cars would be in grave danger. “I met with the devastated parents of the young girl who was knocked down and killed in her own estate in Kilkenny, which led to the drive to have speed limits of 30km in housing estates there,” he said. “I congratulate the County Council on being an early mover in this regard and I would encourage other county councils to follow suit,” he said.

Grandchildren in Balbriggan are being encouraged to nominate their grandparents for the Specsavers Grandparent of the Year Award in association with Third Age. Legendary broadcaster and grandfather of 13, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, recently launched the nationwide search for Ireland’s most exceptional grandparent. The Award celebrates and recognises the extraordinary contribution that grandparents make to the lives of grandchildren and the community. Speaking at the launch, Specsavers Balbriggan store director Brian Brodigan said, ‘We are excited to launch the Grandparent of the Year Award, which recognises the many benefits of an ageing population and the special role that grandparents play in Irish families. It is a fantastic opportunity for younger generations to recognise the

many ways that grandparents and older people enrich our lives and I would encourage grandchildren in Balbriggan to nominate today to give their grandparent the recognition they deserve.’ He continued, “Many people who come to us with concerns about their hearing have

withdrawn from social situations leaving them feeling isolated and depressed, so it is fitting to collaborate with a charity that works tirelessly to alleviate loneliness and combat social isolation.” Grandchildren of all ages can nominate their grandparents by

filling out an entry form in Specsavers Balbriggan, Millfield Shopping Centre or online at www.specsavers.ie/hearing/gran dparent. Four regional finalists from Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster will receive a €215 Specsavers voucher, a bottle of champagne and a finalists’ certificate. The overall winner will receive a weekend away in Ireland, a Grandparent of the Year trophy and a €750

voucher for Specsavers while the grandchild who nominated them will win an iPad Air. The closing date for entries is Monday, 31 October and the four regional finalists will be chosen by a judging panel in November before Ireland’s Grandparent of the Year is announced on Monday, 21 November.
